John 19:24 (The Truth Concering Free Will)
"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." So this is what the soldiers did.- John 19:24
June 8, 2010 Floyd Ray Gage
It is hard to believe but the most important word in this verse is the smallest and seemingly most insignificant. The most important word is the word "so." It means "because of" or "as a result of," but it connects two very important things in this verse that still apply today.
The soldiers at the crucifixion of Jesus did something that they may have done before. They did something that they felt that they decided to do for their own benefit. If you were to ask them why they did it, they would have said it was because it was the most practical thing to do and the thing that served their interests the most. The thing they did was to cast lots for the undergarment of Jesus.
It was one piece and so they didn't want to tear it and this was the reason that they thought they had made the decision. In their minds it was the cause and effect of their actions. We are told by the little word "so" that their decision to do this had much more to it than simple expediency and personal reasoning.
The scriptures had prophesied that Jesus' garments would be decided by the lot at His crucifixion. It was a part of divine prophecy. The little word "so" tells us that this is the reason that it happened. It was the ultimate reason no matter what other reasoning may have led to the decision. God's will was being done. Men were making their decisions for their own reasons, but God's will overarched it all.
If you were to have told the soldiers that they were fulfilling prophecy, they would have probably mocked you or simply waved you away saying that they knew nothing of such things. They had never read the Scriptures and probably had little idea of what they said. They would not have given fulfillment of Scripture and second thought more than likely. They were doing what they did for their own reasons.
The idea that the God of the Jews was determining what they did would have been totally ludicrous to them. They didn't believe in that God, so how could He influence the choices that they made.
There are many like that today. They live their lives, making their decisions, and choosing their paths based on what they think is their own determinations and self-will. What they don't understand, just as the soldiers didn't understand, is that no matter if they believe in God or not they will submit to His will. Their decisions and paths will fit into the plan of God. They will not alter that plan nor will their choices supersede it.
There are other examples of this in Scripture as well. Pharaoh did all he did because it was a part of God's plan for His people. He thought he was doing it because he was the king and they were his servants, but we find out that God was using him to accomplish the plan God had for the Jews. Assyria and Babylon were nations whose leaders were used to accomplish God's plan for His people. They thought they were conquering in order to broaden their empire and influence, but God was using them to punish His people and bring them back to Himself. The Jewish religious leaders were fitting into God's will with their arrest and betrayal of Jesus.
The same is happening today. Nations and leaders, men and women, rich and poor are making their choices and living their lives with many of them little knowing that they will be a part of God's plan one way or another. Free will always serves God.
