Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...

Where You Are Matters!

"You have been wandering around... long enough; turn... " -
Deuteronomy 2:3
NLT

God's plan for your life always involves your gifts, His timing, and being
in the right place. But three things can keep that from happening: fear of
failing,
unwillingness to leave your comfort zone, and being swayed by the opinions
of others. There came a point where, in order to enter the Promised Land,
God
said to Israel, 'You have been wandering around... long enough; turn..'(
Deuteronomy 2:3
NIV) When you reach this point it's crucial that you say yes to God and be
willing to step out in faith.

During a famine God said to the prophet Elijah: ' ''Leave here, turn
eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink
from the
brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there." So he did what the
Lord had told him... and stayed there. The ravens brought him bread and meat
in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the
brook' (
1 Kings 17:3-6
NIV). God's plan for your life is always connected to a place. Jesus '...
had to go through Samaria' (
John 4:4
NIV). Why? To meet a woman who was destined to reach that city with the
gospel. You can't just go where you like, God will honour you when you're
where
He wants you to be. God has promised to bless you, but sometimes He has to
reposition you in order to receive His blessing. It was when Ruth moved to
Bethlehem
that she met Boaz and married him. It was when Bartimaeus went to where
Jesus was that he received his sight. Where you are matters!

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...

The Domino Effect Of Praise (1)

"... I will praise you more and more." -
Psalm 71:14
NLT

Don't limit yourself to worshipping God in church. Be like the Psalmist: 'I
will bless the Lord at all times... ' (
Psalm 34:1
NKJV). When you don't feel like praising God but you do it because you want
to please Him, that's called '... the sacrifice of praise... ' (
Hebrews 13:15
NKJV). And when praise becomes a lifestyle it has a domino effect (that's
where one change causes another, which in turn causes another). When you
tell
God how wonderful He is, how much you love Him and want to spend time with
Him, you're more likely to find your mate telling you how wonderful you are,
how much they love and enjoy being around you. Over time your family and
friends start to feel the effect. On the other hand, when you withhold from
God
the praise He deserves, you deprive yourself of what you need in your own
life. David said, '... magnify the Lord with me... let us exalt his name
together'
(
Psalm 34:3
NKJV). God inhabits [occupies, sets up house in] the praises of His people
(
Psalm 22:3
KJV). When you tell Him, 'You're wonderful, there's no problem You can't
solve and no need You can't meet. I'm casting all my care on You. I know You
love
me and I'm not going to give in to depression and defeat. I'm trusting You
to conquer my enemies, break down the doors that are locked and give me
victory,'
God sends angels to fight and win the battle on your behalf (
Hebrews 1:14
NIV). No wonder David said, '... I will praise you more and more.'(
Psalm 71:14
NLT) It works! Isn't it time you started thinking along the same lines?

The Domino Effect Of Praise (2)

"My mouth is filled with Your praise... all day long." -
Psalm 71:8
NAS

In 2007, after battling leukemia, pianist/song- writer Roger Bennett died. He
thought he was in remission but the disease returned with a vengeance. He
wrote
on his website: 'Our enemy stalks us exactly the way the Bible describes, as
a roaring lion. He hides in the bushes waiting for any sign of weakness.
Then
he strikes. He didn't strike me physically. He struck a more critical
part-my joy... confidence.. . and hope. Every thought I turned towards heaven
bounced
back like it was made of brass. Every time I tried to look on the bright
side, I ended up imagining a dark future. Then he threw his most effective
dart-doubt.
"You call yourself a Christian. What a hypocrite! You're more afraid than
ever... more filled with despair. So much for your faith, Mr. Gospel
Singer!"
I believed everything he said. I tried everything I knew to pull out of
it... I thought if I dozed off it would pass... but the clock seemed to move
in
slow motion. Sleep was nowhere near. I tried to lose myself in the Bible,
but the words blurred and I couldn't make sense of them.' Then Bennett had
an
epiphany, as he thought about Paul and Silas in prison. 'They didn't
despair,' he wrote. 'They sang praises and that became their weapon. One
after another...
old songs came to me and I sang them to my empty room. It wasn't a great
performance, but it may be the most powerful blessing I've received.' The
Psalmist
wrote, 'My mouth is filled with Your praise... all day long.'(
Psalm 71:8
NAS) Try it. It's a strategy that works!

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...
Examine Your Habits
"... they continue practicing the former [habits]... " -
2 Kings 17:34
NKJV
God said, '... they continue practicing the former [habits]; they do not
fear the Lord, nor do they follow... the law... which the Lord...
commanded...
'(
2 Kings 17:34
NKJV) Understand this: Any habit you feed will strengthen its grip on your
life. Ask anyone recovering from addiction; we only become willing to change
when we hit the bottom. Prodigals don't come home until they've lost
everything! But that doesn't have to be your story. Your heavenly Father is
waiting
to welcome you back. You are a child of the Most High; captivity is
unnatural for you. You'll never be free until you despise your chains.
Whether you're
bound by a substance, a relationship or a life that's out of order, your
circumstances won't change until your mind is released from the grip of old
thought
patterns and renewed by God's Word (
Romans 12:2).
So start putting in place new habits, for what you do consistently, you
become permanently. Begin the Bible-reading habit. Put it first on your 'to
do'
list or you won't do it faithfully. '... Those who discover these words
live, really live... ' (
Proverbs 4:22
TM). Set a specific time for prayer, otherwise everything else will crowd
it out. In prayer God will tell you how He feels about things. Can you
afford
to live without His input? Attend church regularly, support it with your
finances, exercise your spiritual gifts and begin to invest time and energy
into
relationships that sharpen and strengthen you spiritually. God will say
things to you in His house that He won't say anywhere else. Your daily
habits are
carving out an irreversible future. If you want to know where you're
headed-examine them!

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...
When God Shows Up
"... the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come... " -
Malachi 3:1
NKJV
Sometimes God shows up dramatically: like an unexpected cheque in the mail,
a door suddenly opening, or the Lord protecting you from a situation that
would
otherwise destroy you (See
Psalm 91:11).
Other times He shows up quietly, replacing your anxiety with assurance,
whispering, 'Fear not... I am with you... ' (
Isaiah 41:10
NKJV). And when those around you say, 'You're different today, what's
changed?' you reply, 'I don't know, I just have peace about it.' That's
because,
'... the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come... '(
Malachi 3:1
NKJV) Here are two Bible stories which illustrate this: The first story
demonstrates how God intervenes in situations where you are misunderstood
and mistreated.
'After they had been severely flogged... About midnight Paul and Silas were
praying and singing hymns... Suddenly... all the prison doors flew open...
' (
Acts 16:23-26
NIV). Midnight prayers and songs of praise help you see beyond the problem,
to God, the great problem-solver. By taking the focus off yourself and
putting
it on Him, your whole outlook begins to change. The second story
demonstrates how God intervenes when we are overwhelmed by the sheer size of
the challenge.
Faced with leading two million Israelites into the Promised Land, Moses
prays, '... show me now Your way... ' (
Exodus 33:13
NKJV). And God replies, '... "Here is a place by Me... I will put you in
the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand... ' (
Exodus 33:21-23
NKJV). When God tells you, 'Here is a place by me,' get into it and stay
there! Even when you can't see Him clearly, you'll feel His presence,
experience
His goodness, and know that everything is going to be okay.

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...
Get Into God's Word!
"... they... searched the Scriptures daily... " -
Acts 17:11
NKJV
The Devil doesn't mind you paying lip-service to God's Word as long as you
don't take the time to read and study it. How long have you been talking
about
reading your Bible? When are you going to get around to doing it-and
applying its principles in your everyday life? Dr. Howard Hendricks writes:
'Anybody
can come up with a grandiose scheme for change. One person says he wants to
reach the world for Christ. Somebody else wants to study every book in the
Bible over the next five years. Somebody else plans to memorise 100 verses.
Somebody else is going to become a Christ-like spouse. Wonderful! When are
you going to begin? Until you answer that, all you have is good intentions.
Those have about as much value as a worthless cheque. After all, what good
does it do to dream of reaching the world with the Gospel if you can't share
Christ with the person in the office next to you? How are you going to study
the entire Bible when you don't even know what verse you're going to study
tomorrow? How can you memorise 100 verses when you've never even tried to
memorise
one? Rather than fantasize about a Christ-like marriage, why not start with
something simple such as doing the dishes if you're a husband, or
encouraging
your husband if you're a wife? Too much "application" stays at the level of
good intentions because we talk about the end of the journey without
specifying
when, where, and how we're going to take the first step. As someone has well
said, "We don't plan to fail, we fail to plan."

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...
Your Self-Esteem Must Come From God
"... I have called you by your name; You are Mine." -
Isaiah 43:1
NKJV
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, 'Though you are one of the teeming millions in
this world, and though the world would have you believe that you do not
count
and that you are but a speck in the mass, God says, 'I know you.' How
wonderful is that? Take a moment and consider the things in life that rob us
of self-esteem.
Words such as, 'I don't want you; I don't love you anymore.' Or 'You're
unsuitable for the job; sorry, we have to let you go.' Or, 'You keep making
the
same stupid mistakes. You'll never get it right.' Or, 'Why can't you be like
your brother, or your sister, or so-and-so?' Understand this:
1) Your self-esteem cannot be based on what you do for a living. Because
when you can no longer do it you'll feel worthless. Think about some of the
famous
people you know: athletes, artists, speakers, etc. When they can no longer
do what they do they often get depressed, even suicidal. 2) Your self-esteem
cannot be based on what you own. Recently the U.S. housing market lost up to
40% of its value in one year. Millions of people saw their social status go
down and their financial security go up in smoke. 3) Your self-esteem cannot
be based on other people's opinion because it will always make you
vulnerable
to rejection. What's the solution? Discover what God thinks about you and
build your life on it. '... thus says the Lord, who created you... who...
redeemed
you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.'(
Isaiah 43:1
NKJV) It doesn't get any better than that!

Today's "The Word For Today" with Bob Gass...

Legalism Or Grace? (1)

"..do not set aside... grace... " -
Galatians 2:21
NKJV

Imagine going to the emergency room and being asked to leave because you're
bleeding all over the floor! Jesus encountered that legalistic mindset when
he healed a crippled woman on the Sabbath. 'Indignant.. . the synagogue ruler
said... "There are six days for work... come and be healed on those days...
'' ' (
Luke 13:14
NIV). Observing the law was more important to him than the people he was
supposed to care for. Max Lucado says: 'All religion falls into... two
camps:
legalism or grace. A legalist believes if you look right, speak right and
belong to the right group, you'll be saved... The outside sparkles... but
something's
missing... Joy. What's there instead? Fear-that you won't do enough.
Arrogance-that you've done enough. Failure-that you've made a mistake.
Legalism is...
slow suffocation of the spirit, amputation of one's dreams... enough
religion to keep but not nourish you... Your diet is rules and standards.
Legalism...
doesn't need God... It's the search for innocence-not forgiveness. .. a
systematic process of defending... explaining.. . exalting... justifying.. .
It turns
my opinion into your burden. There's only room for one opinion... and guess
who's wrong? It turns my opinion into your boundary. Your opposing opinion
makes me question not only your right to fellowship with me, but your
salvation. It turns my opinion into your obligation. Christians must toe the
company
line. Your job isn't to think, it's to march... Salvation is God's business.
Grace is his idea, his work, and his expense. He offers it to whomever he
desires, when he desires. Our job is to inform people, not screen them.'
Paul writes, 'Do not set aside... grace... for if righteousness comes
through
the law... Christ died in vain.' Thank God 'he saved us because of his
mercy... not... good deeds we did... ' (
Titus 3:5
NCV).

"We are made fit... by the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus." -
Hebrews 10:10
TM

Rigid adherence to a list of do's and don'ts appeals to our pride and
self-sufficiency by fostering the myth that if we work hard enough we can
earn God's
favour. That's fear-based thinking, and '... God has not given us a spirit
of fear... ' (
2 Timothy 1:7
NLT). 'There is no fear in love... fear has to do with punishment.. . ' (
1 John 4:18
NIV). Legalism is fear that God isn't big enough to forgive your sins, that
unless you do the right thing in the right way at the right time-and do it
perfectly-you' re in trouble. Jon Walker writes: 'That's a lie with the smell
of hell all over it! When we fear making mistakes we become timid, and limit
ourselves from living abundantly. We let... analysis permeate our decisions
as we lead quiet, desperate, anti-faith lives, afraid to move with the bold
confidence that grace gives us to walk in uncertainty. .. unafraid of
rejection.' Speaking against works-based religion, Martin Luther said, 'Be a
sinner
and let your sins be strong, but let your trust in Christ be stronger...
rejoice in Christ... the victor over sin.' No, Luther wasn't excusing sin!
He
was restoring grace to its rightful place, affirming that nothing can
separate us from God's love (
Romans 8:38-39).
He wasn't downgrading the law, He was upgrading grace. Grace means talking
to God and listening for His voice when it would be easier to just consult
the
rule book. The truth is, when '... [Jesus] entered... heaven... to appear...
before God on our behalf' (
Hebrews 9:24
NLT), He freed us to have a relationship with Him without fear of sin
separating us.
