ABOUT ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS: SHUNNING IS ABUSIVE AND AS HURTFUL
Greetings,
Most of us carry emotional scars of dysfunctional, abusive relationships from family and friends. I believe one of the most insidious, passive-aggressive form of abuse is 'shunning' someone after a more or less friendly relationship for no apparent reason and no explanation to the bewildered person left out of the loop. More so from Christians family and friends, without any explanation at
all.
I found the dictionary definition as:
Noun 1. shunning - deliberately avoiding; keeping away from or preventing from happening
avoidance, turning away, dodging
rejection - the act of rejecting something; "his proposals were met with rejection"
aversion, averting - the act of turning yourself (or your gaze) away; "averting her gaze meant that she was angry"
escape - an avoidance of danger or difficulty; "that was a narrow escape"
near thing - something that barely avoids failure or disaster
I know they are times we need to put a relationship 'on hold' for a reason in either side of the relationship but we should remember to walk in God's love walk (so hard at times) as told in 1 Cor. 13:
1 Corinthians 13
Amplified Bible (AMP)
1 IF I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God's love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 And if I have prophetic powers the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), and understand all the secret truths and mysteries and possess all knowledge, and if I have [sufficient] faith so that I can remove mountains, but have not love (God's love in me) I am nothing (a useless nobody).
3 Even if I dole out all that I have [to the poor in providing] food, and if I surrender my body to be burned or in order that I may glory, but have not love (God's love in me), I gain nothing.
4 Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.
5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God's love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].
6 It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.
7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].
8 Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth].
9 For our knowledge is fragmentary (incomplete and imperfect), and our prophecy (our teaching) is fragmentary (incomplete and imperfect).
10 But when the complete and perfect (total) comes, the incomplete and imperfect will vanish away (become antiquated, void, and superseded).
11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; now that I have become a man, I am done with childish ways and have put them aside.
12 For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma], but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly) , but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood [by God].
13 And so faith, hope, love abide [faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope-- joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love-- true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Let me repeat it, beloved:
1 Corinthians 13
New King James Version (NKJV)
The Greatest Gift
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Let's remember 'love' is an action - and an action of our will, not a reaction to our emotions!
Well, in the other side of the shunning, this is a sound advise from a woman of God and other Christians of ministries of excellence: "... ok, it happened to you... put the emotional memory of it at the feet of Jesus and decide you are not a victim forgive them, and stay away from them if that should be the best at the time to avoid re-injuring yourself emotionally, and go on in your walk with the Lord." This is very helpful and sound advise to each one of us today, friends!
And I add to those that are shunning others for whatever reasons, consciously or unconsciously: pause and meditate on 1 Cor. 13 and find out if you need to repent yourself for that act - maybe you must continue to be away from the relationship but make sure your heart is right and your walk with the Lord is not blocked by unforgiveness.
Blessings to all,
maria g.
