Fall On Your Knees

The writer of Hebrews described the babe born in a manger in a very distinct manner. But do most people in the shopping malls or in the restaurants really know Who this great One is about Whom the songs are written? What about all of the movie stars and famous singers throughout the ages? Did they know of Whom these songs were written?

How is it that ungodly people can sing Christmas carols without feeling one ounce of conviction? The question remains - why are they not "bowing down before this Great One"?

Surely Satan desires to blind the minds of all mankind from really understanding about Whom these carols were and are written. The writer of Hebrews spelled it out for all to clearly see - using not several chapters but two verses of Scripture. In these particular verses, it is evident that Jesus Christ is indeed the Son of God and worthy of our worship.

In this message, we would like to examine these two verses and theseven great revelations of Christ - the God man Who came to dwell among men and die for their sins. Prayerfully, this message will forever change your concept of Jesus and bring utmost meaning to the carols which all are tempted to sing so flippantly.

"What child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary."

Yes, the question should be asked of all - "What child is this?"

The writer of Hebrews describes Him in this way - "...His Son, Whom He hath appointed heir of all things..." (Hebrews 1:2). This "child"happens to be the Possessor, Sovereign, and Lord of all. He is the absolute Disposer, Director, and Governor of all persons and things. The universe belongs to Him by Divine Appointment.

"Joy to the world! the Lord is come;

Let earth receive her King,
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing."

Why should "heav'n and nature sing"?

Hebrews 1:2 tells us that this "Lord" Who has come is the One "by Whom also He (God) made the worlds" (Hebrews 1:2). He happens to be the actual agent in creation - the Creator of all. Resultantly, "Let earth receive her King." "Let heav'n and nature" indeed sing!

"Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah!

Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah! Hal-le-lu-jah!
For the Lord God Omnip-o-tent reign-eth, Hal-le-lu-jah!"

Who is this "Lord God Omnipotent" Who reigns?

Hebrews 1:3 describes Him in this way - "Who being the brightness of His (God's) glory..." He is the outshining, effulgence, or radiance of God's glory...the perfection of God...the manifestation of the glory of the Father...or the reflected splendor of God. Is it any wonder that we repeatedly sing "Hallelujah" to such a One Who is truly deserving of all of our Praise and Honor?

"Fall on your knees!

O hear the angel voices!
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born,
O night divine!
O night, O night divine!"

Why should mankind fall upon their knees and consider the night when such a Being was born as - "night divine"?

Hebrews 1:3 offers an explanation when it describes Christ as being -"the express image of His (God's) person." This means that He was and is and forever will be the exact representation...exact character...and exact image of God's essential being. He is a Being having the same nature as the Father. When you behold Him, you behold God. Yes, indeed! "Fall on your knees!" before such a One!

"Come and behold Him, Born the King of angels,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord."

Who is this One Who was "born the King of angels" and we are beckoned to "come and adore"?

Hebrews 1:3 describes Him as - "upholding all things by the word of His power." He has all power in heaven and in earth. This power is manifested by His Word. He spoke the worlds into being by His Word. And He keeps the world from dissolving by this same Word. He upholds and sustains all things by His Word and by Him all things consist.

"Hark! the herald angels sing; Glory to the newborn King;

Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.
Joyful all ye nations rise; Join the triumph of the skies;
With angelic hosts proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem."

What is "the triumph of the skies"? Is it not that "God and sinners are reconciled"? How is this made possible?

Hebrews 1:3 offers the answer when it tells us of Jesus - "when He had by Himself purged our sins." This "Christ" was born to be the Sin-bearer - the One Who would put away sin by merit of His death and resurrection. By His own Blood, He would purify the hearts of all people...remove their sins...take their sins upon Himself...and abolish them.

"Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains.
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Glo - - - - - - - - - - - ri - a in ex-cel-sis De - o!
Glo - - - - - - - - - - - ri - a in ex-cel-sis De - o!"

Why are the angels singing this joyous anthem of - "Glory to God in the highest"? What is behind their celebration?

Hebrews 1:3 alludes to it in saying of Christ Jesus that He - "sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high." The right hand of a King has always been the place of the greatest eminence - the place where the highest favorite sits. It is the place of honor. When Jesus completed the work of redemption, He sat down at the Father's right hand as the enthroned Lord - being invested with the highest honor and authority.

"No-el, No-el, No-el, No-el!

Born is the King of Israel!"

The word "Noel" is a French word meaning - "birthday."

Now that you have correlated the Christmas carols with Hebrews 1:2-3 - one of the finest descriptions of Jesus Christ as God in the flesh - how will you celebrate this awesome King's birthday?

Remember - you must never come before a King - empty-handed. You must always come with a gift.

It is His birthday that we sing about and celebrate.

What gift will you bring before this King of all kings?

He asks for one thing alone - and that is, your heart. For when He has your heart, He has your all!

Bow down and worship Him - worship Jesus, your Lord.

May the scales fall from your eyes which blind you from seeing this King for Who He truly is! May you never hear or sing a Christmas carol in the same fashion as before.

When the world asks - "What child is this?" - be sure to direct them to Hebrews 1:2-3 for the answer.

Bow down & worship Him - worship Jesus, your Lord!
