Vegetable juice aids 'strive for five'
DAVIS, Calif. (UPI) -- University of California-Davis researchers say drinking vegetable juice is an effective way to help people increase their vegetable intake. Study author Carl Keen says seven out of 10 adults fall short of the daily vegetable intake recommended by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. The researchers studied whether drinking vegetable juice could be a simple behavior change to help boost the intake of vegetables to "strive for five," or eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
Three groups of healthy men and women received dietary counseling on ways to get more vegetables but two of the groups were instructed to consume at least one serving of vegetable juice, in the form of V8.
Of those two groups, one drank one 8-ounce glass of vegetable juice every day and the other drank two 8-ounce glasses of vegetable juice every day as part of a balanced eating plan.
The finding, presented at the American Dietetic Association annual conference, found that those who received dietary counseling and consumed vegetable juice were far more likely than those who received counseling alone to meet the daily vegetable recommendations of five servings a day.

Q&A: Plants That Attract Birds
Question: What kinds of flowers and shrubs attract birds? I understand they eat lots of pest insects.
Answer: There are many plants that attract birds. Delphinium, monkshood, bee balm, morning glories, roses, sunflowers, and lilacs are some flowers that birds like.
Berry bushes such as cranberry bush viburnum, nannyberry, honeysuckle, mountain ash, barberries, cotoneaster, hawthorne, snowberries, and dogwood offer fruit, some of them into the winter. Evergreen shrubs offer protection and nesting sites.
The key is to provide a variety of conditions: some open lawn, some low-growing cover, some larger shrubs and trees, and some food sources. Birds are also attracted to water, such as bird baths.

Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Reheating Refrigerated Bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
QWhat is the best way to preserve harvested basil leaves? Freezing? Drying? If drying, do you bake them at low temperature or air dry them?
Answer: Basil retains is flavor best when stored in a jar of oil or vinegar in the refrigerator, or made into pesto. You can freeze pesto, too, though it's best to leave the garlic out, since it gets bitter when frozen. To dry basil, spread the cleaned leaves on cookie sheets, and place in your oven, set on its lowest setting. Leave the oven door ajar to allow air circulation, and stir the leaves frequently to ensure even drying. Remove them when crispy, allow them to cool, and store them in airtight jars.
