Palestinians greet Trump presidency with caution

Some Palestinians appear worried that President-elect Donald Trump will not coddle them the way President Obama has.

The Palestinians greeted Donald Trump’s victory with apprehension, while several Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders issued almost identical statements, expressing their cautious hope that Trump’s administration will be the one to bring “peace to the region” and implement the two-state solution.

PA head Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Trump and “expressed hope that a just peace will be achieved during his tenure.”

PA Presidential Spokesman and Fatah Central Committee member Nabil Abu Rudeina stated that the Palestinians “will work with any president the American people elect on the basis of achieving peace in the Middle East, which is based on the two-state solution within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem the capital of the State of Palestine.”

Abu Rudeina added that “peace in the region will come through a fair solution to the Palestinian issue according to [the resolutions of] the international bodies, which will lead to the elimination of the chaos and extremism in the world.”

It is of significance to note that the two-state solution has been stricken from the Republican platform presented during these elections.

A more outspoken reaction to the US election came from PLO Executive Committee member and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) political bureau member Tayseer Khaled, who commented on the possible impact on the “Palestinian national cause.”

Among other things, he called Trump a liar, predicting that Trump, contrary to his promises, will not transfer the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

“There is no reason for concern, because [although] we know that Donald Trump is relatively closer to Israel than Hillary Clinton is, his policy here is clearer than her policy… Donald Trump will not transfer his country’s embassy to Jerusalem as he promised, and he knew he was lying. On the issue of settlement, he will not object to construction in Jerusalem and what are called the settlement blocs. He will not sign blank checks for [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, but he undoubtedly will not pull our chestnuts out of the fire [either]. Therefore, it depends on our policy and our will, and if his Palestinian policy remains the same we will pay dearly,” he said, according to the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW).

In April, the Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the official Palestinian daily, commented on Trump’s candidacy with a cartoon, in which Trump is seen beheading the torch of the Statue of Liberty.

Similarly, the PA’s Supreme Fatwa Council in September “condemned the election promise that US Candidate Donald Trump made to recognize Jerusalem as the ‘united capital’ of Israel if he is elected as president,” and stated that “exploiting Jerusalem as part of the American election campaign constitutes disrespect of international law.”

Trump advisor: Israeli presence in Judea and Samaria not obstacle to peace
 November 10, 2016

Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s advisor on Israel, has reassured Israelis and Jews around the world, saying that, as opposed to previous administrations, President-elect Donald Trump does not view Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria as obstacles to peace.

President-Elect Donald Trump does not view Israel’s presence in Judea and Samaria as an obstacle to peace, one of his senior advisors said Thursday.

Speaking to IDF Radio, Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s advisor on Israel, that “Mr. Trump does not view the settlements [Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria] as being an obstacle for peace. The two sides are going to have to decide how to deal with that region, but it’s certainly not Mr. Trump’s view that settlement activity should be condemned and that it’s an obstacle for peace – because it is not the obstacle for peace.”

” I think he would show Gaza as proof of that,” Greenblatt said, referring to Israel’s 2005 unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, which included the removal of all 21 Israeli communities and which subsequently led to the advent of Hamas’ rule and three wars against Israel.

In an interview with The Associated Press in December 2015, Trump was asked whether Israel should stop building in Judea and Samaria, Trump responded, “No… I think Israel should have – they really have to keep going. They have to keep moving forward.”

It is of significance to note that Trump’s policy is diametrically opposed to the one adopted by President Barack Obama and his administration, which has repeatedly condemned Israel for its presence in Judea and Samaria and even for its approval of plans for further building.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Greenblatt said that the Trump administration “is not going to impose any solution on Israel. He thinks that the peace has to come from the parties themselves. Any meaningful contribution he can offer up, he is there to do,  it is not his goal, nor should it be anyone else’s goal, to impose peace on the parties.”

With regard to Israel’s security challenges, Greenblatt said that  Trump “thinks that Israel is in a very tough situation and needs to defend itself as it needs to defend itself.”

Regarding the recent resolutions adopted by United Nations bodies denying the Jewish links to the Temple Mount and Jerusalem, Greenblatt said that the president-elect recognizes the Jewish People’s right to sit in its eternal capital, Jerusalem, and has expressed disdain at goings-on at UNESCO.

As for moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Greenblatt estimated that “I think if he said it, he’s going to do it. He is different for Israel than any recent president there has been, and I think he’s a man who keeps his word.

“He is different for Israel than any recent president has been,” Greenblatt stressed.

Top Adviser: Trump Does Not See Settlements as Obstacles to Peace

“And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.” Isaiah 65:21 (The Israel Bible™)
Jason Greenblatt, is co-Chairman of Israel Advisory Committee for Donald Trump, and Trump. (Facebook)
Donald Trump’s chief Israel adviser Jason Greenblatt on Thursday told Army Radio that his boss “does not define settlements as obstacle to peace, and he would prove this by pointing to the situation in the Gaza Strip, where the Jewish settlements were evacuated and peace still has not arrived.”

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Greenblatt suggested that “Trump thinks Israel is in a difficult situation and must defend herself. Peace must arrive through a bilateral initiative and he has no plan to get involved in it.”
Regarding the UNESCO resolution ignoring the Jewish connection to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, Greenblat said the President Elect recognizes the right of the Jewish nation to its eternal capital Jerusalem and is disgusted by the resolution.
To keep things balanced, Army Radio also interviewed former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk, who said, with noted condescension, “If the Israeli right knows what Trump position regarding Israel is, I believe they know more than Trump does.”
Indyk urged Israelis to take the President Elect’s promises with a grain of salt, since his position on Israel “is quite unclear, he says different things to different groups. We simply don’t know.”
According to Indyk, Trump will follow all past presidents who promised to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “He is not the first presidential candidate to promise this, which is why I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t do it,” Indyk said.
