Supreme Court justices questioned the State of Israel’s justification for creating an autonomous Jewish municipality in Hebron that is not under Palestinian jurisdiction
By: World Israel News Staff
Supreme Court justices issued a temporary injunction Monday night against the State of Israel’s decision to create an autonomous Jewish municipality in Hebron.
The court asked the State of Israel to justify the creation of an autonomous Jewish municipality in Hebron that is not under the Palestinians’ rule.
The temporary injunction, which froze the decision to create the Jewish municipality, seemed to be a sign that the justices were leaning toward annulling altogether the autonomous Jewish municipality.
The restraining order was issued within the framework of a petition presented by Hebron’s Palestinian municipality, which is opposed to the existence of an autonomous Jewish municipality.

A US judge ruled that Naftali Frankel, kidnapped and murdered by Hamas in 2014, was partly to blame because he attended a school in an area supposedly prone to terror attacks.
By: World Israel News Staff
A US judge has told the parents of Naftali Frankel, who was kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists together with another two Israeli teens in the summer of 2014, that they were partially to blame for his death because they chose to send him to a school in an area supposedly prone to terror attacks.
The three Israeli teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaer and Naftali Frankel, were kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists in the summer of 2014 in the Gush Etzion area of Judea and Samaria. Their bodies were found in a shallow grave three weeks later on the route to Hebron. A couple of months later, Israeli Special Forces tracked down and killed the terrorists.
In 2015, Racheli Frankel, Naftali’s mother and a US citizen, filed a lawsuit against Iran and Syria in a federal court in Washington in a bid to hold them accountable for their son’s murder.
During the proceedings, Racheli Frankel recounted the devastating night of her son’s abduction and the subsequent torturous weeks.

A law requiring deductions from Palestinian Authority tax coffers to offset PA terror salaries passed in the Knesset on Monday night.
By: TPS
A law compelling the Cabinet to deduct tax monies that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority from payments made to the PA in order to offset salaries paid by the Authority to the families of terrorists, has passed in a second and third reading on the Knesset floor Monday night.
After the law passed in its first reading in May, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed for it to contain more flexible language, pinning the offsets to a Cabinet vote, rather than deducting the sums automatically. However, the version of the law which passed the floor vote compels the Cabinet to offset the funds.

The largest concentration of Jewish people, more than six million, live in Israel, compared with 5.7 million living in the United States, Aliyah and Integration Minister Sofa Landver told the Knesset’s Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs on Monday.
Committee Chairman MK Avraham Neguise praised the Aliyah Ministry’s achievements and said Israel’s mission was to bring all of the world’s Jews back home.
Landver attributed her ministry’s success to cooperation with the Jewish Agency, organizations that assist olim (new immigrants) and local authorities.
“We invest a lot in encouraging Aliyah, we hold fairs in the countries of origin, offer potential immigrants personal accompaniment and assistance in their job search, studies and housing,” she said.

Yuval Shany,  former dean of Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law, was elected to chair a professional committee in the UN that deals with human rights issues.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Yuval Shany, professor of International Public Law at Hebrew University, was elected Monday to chair the United Nations Human Rights Committee. He is the first Israeli to hold the position.
Speaking to Army Radio Tuesday, Shany emphasized that the Geneva-based committee is not the infamous UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which has a “political orientation.”
The UNHRC is known for bashing Israel more than all the other countries of the world combined over alleged human rights abuses. The United States, in fact, recently withdrew from the council in protest of its refusal to cancel its unique Article 7, which calls for Israel to be discussed at every meeting.

Iran’s president is warning that regional oil supply could be jeopardized if the US gets its allies to stop buying Tehran’s oil.
By: AP
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is warning that regional oil supply could be jeopardized if the United States manages to get its allies to stop buying Tehran’s oil.
Rouhani spoke to Iranian expatriates in Switzerland during his visit there on Monday. He said the US has threatened not to allow Iran to continue exporting its oil.
“It seems they do not understand what they are saying when they say Iran will not be allowed to export even a single drop of oil,” Rouhani said in remarks aired by Iranian state television. “All right, if you can do such a thing, do it and see the result!”
Rouhani did not elaborate, but Iran long has asserted it could shut down the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow body of water that separates the Persian Gulf from the wider world. A third of all oil traded by sea passes through the strait and the U.S. Navy regularly has direct, tense encounters with Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) there.
Iran is OPEC’s (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) second-largest crude exporter with more than 2 million barrels a day.
After the US pulled out of the nuclear deal with Iran, Washington has been pushing allies to cut oil imports from Iran altogether by November.

A radicalized American Muslim was arrested by the FBI after scouting locations for a Fourth of July terror attack.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
An American-born citizen who federal authorities say recently scouted locations in Cleveland to attack people watching Fourth of July fireworks and talked of carrying out additional bombings has been charged with trying to support terrorism.
Federal authorities said Monday that Demetrius Pitts, 48, an avowed Muslim who also goes by the name Abdur Raheem Rafeeq, had repeatedly expressed his support for Al-Qaeda for more than a year and talked about setting off bombs at a July 4 parade and later in his hometown of Philadelphia.
Pitts, of Maple Heights, was due in federal court Monday in Cleveland. There were no court documents listing an attorney for him.
He was arrested Sunday after meeting an undercover agent and charged with attempted support of a terrorist organization.
FBI Special Agent Stephen Anthony said it was not clear how close Pitts was to carrying out his threats, but he said authorities couldn’t sit back and wait to find out.

Australia stops direct aid to Palestinians, fearing it funds violence

Australia will discontinue direct aid to the Palestinian Authority because it suspects the money is freeing up funds used to support political violence.
By: World Israel News and AP
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Monday that Australia will stop giving about $7 million a year to the World Bank’s trust fund for Palestinian recovery and development, according to Australian media sources.
Australia said it has ended direct aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) because Australian donations could increase the self-governing body’s capacity to pay Palestinians convicted of politically motivated violence.
The PA spends an estimated $300 million annually to pay stipends to Palestinians who committed acts of terror against Israelis and others as well as to families of these terrorists.
Bishop said Australia cut funding to the World Bank’s Multi-Donor Trust Fund for the Palestinian Recovery and Development Program after writing to the PA in late May seeking assurance that Australian funding was not going to Palestinian criminals.
“I wrote to the Palestinian Authority on May 29 to seek clear assurance that Australian funding is not being used to assist Palestinians convicted of politically motivated violence,” Bishop said in a statement.
“I am confident that previous Australian funding to the PA through the World Bank has been used as intended.

Hamas: No return of IDF soldiers’ bodies without release of hundreds of prisoners

Hamas will refuse any deal to return two Israeli civilians in its custody, as well as the remains of IDF soldiers Sgt. Oron Shaul and Lt. Hadar Goldin, unless it is part of a wide scale prisoner exchange, the London-based Al-Shark Al-Awsat reported on Saturday.

Israel’s ties with Morocco not official, but warming

Israel’s ties with Morocco not official, but warming(Shutterstock)
Though Israel has no official diplomatic ties with Morocco, its relations are warmer than with countries like Egypt or Jordan, which have signed peace treaties with the Jewish state.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Although Morocco and Israel are still officially enemies, you wouldn’t be able to tell today, reported Jackie Chugi on Army Radio Monday.
Many in Morocco object vociferously to any normalization with the Jewish state, but it is precisely the surprising extent of normalization between the two countries that sparked the objections in the first place.
“Not a month goes by without us hearing about Israeli sports competitors who  come to Morocco, about Israeli tourists, and even a senior security official who came to the Parliament,” said Chugi, translating an outburst by an angry Moroccan journalist.
The reporter noted some numbers that backed up the theory: 30,000 Israeli tourists visited Morocco in 2017, and Moroccan exports to Israel have gone from $5 million to $25 million in the past five years.
Researcher Einat Levy of Mitvim, the Israel Institute for Regional Foreign Policies, added, “There are many contacts, both open and secret, in almost every field you could think of.”
It helps that 800,000 Jews of Moroccan origin live in Israel – “making Israel essentially the second-largest Moroccan diaspora in the world,” she pointed out.
Rabat in fact has no problem letting tens of thousands in to boost its tourism industry. More publicly, however, Morocco – unlike its fellow Arab countries still in a formal state of war with Israel – allows Israelis to compete in international tournaments under their own flag. And if they win, they may even hear their national anthem. When Timna Nelson-Levy won gold in the Agadir Grand Prix for Judo a few months ago, Hatikva was played loud and clear as she ascended the podium to get her medal.

A Knesset event titled “Children Under Occupation” is stirring controversy.
By: World Israel News Staff
A Knesset conference that will focus on the suffering of Palestinian children under Israeli “occupation” has sparked controversy.
“Zionist Union’s lost it,” Member of Knesset (MK) Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid party, charged, referring to the political alliance that helped organize the event, Arutz 7 reported.
“They have joined BDS supporters and are giving a “gift to Israel’s enemies,” Lapid added
In response to the event, Knesset Chairman Yuli Edelstein will introduce a new requirement that organizers of conferences notify the Knesset in advance so that controversial issues liable to cause a disruption are blocked.
Edelstein also prevented the screening of a film that deals with the plight of children living under “occupation” since it was not approved in advance by the Knesset.
The controversial event, organized by MKs Michal Rozin of the leftwing Meretz party, Ayman Odeh and Dov Khenin of the Joint Arab List, and Ksenia Svetlova (Zionist Union), will feature organizations such as B’Tselem and Breaking the Silence.

A major survey of Hungarian Jews revealed a strikingly liberal, well educated community that sees Israel as very important and views anti-Semitism as a problem.
By: World Israel News Staff
Hungary’s Jews are liberal-minded, view Israel as very important, see anti-Semitism as a problem and tend to be highly educated, according to a survey released last week in Budapest.
About half of the respondents encountered manifestations of anti-Semitism, a fifth said they suffered from verbal abuse and another fifth said they witnessed such abuse.
Only one percent personally experienced a physical attack, and another three percent were eyewitnesses to such an incident.
However, respondents considered the extent of anti-Semitism to be much greater than did the respondents of a survey conducted in 1999.
The survey, presented in book form, was titled, “Jews and Jewry in Hungary in 2017: Results of Sociological Research.”

Yazidis persecuted by ISIS in Iraq were in Israel to learn how to become medical clowns so they can help their war-ravaged brethren back home.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A small group of Yazidis from Iraq recently visited Israel to receive training in medical clowning to help children in need of medical treatment or post-traumatic stress disorder in their home country, said Israel’s foreign ministry Sunday.
The five participants in the special training program left Israel at the end of last week with new tools and techniques that will enable them to get people who have managed to survive years of civil war and terrorist outrages in Iraq to smile, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender – or age.
The training was prepared by the Israeli “Dream Doctors Project,” which trains such clowns and works to promote medical clowning as an officially recognized paraprofessional medical profession recognized through proper academic training. Other partners that helped in this unique international venture were the British Road to Peace organization, the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By: World Israel News Staff
The Israeli military provided medical aid to six wounded Syrians, four of whom were reportedly newly-orphaned youth ranging from 6-years-old to 14. The refugees were brought into Israeli territory for immediate treatment at a local hospital on Friday night.
The army described the maneuver as a “unique and complex medical operation,” reported Times of Israel.
The six admitted refugees were injured during Syrian dictator Bashar Assad’s onslaught on southwestern Syria. While the Syrian civil war has dragged on for years, Assad has made major gains as of late with Russia’s assistance, regaining territory from rebel groups that oppose his brutal dictatorship.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza announced that an explosion had killed two residents in an incident suggestive of mishandled explosive material.
By: World Israel News Staff
Two Palestinians were killed and eight others injured on Saturday night by an explosion that rocked a structure in Shejaiya, a neighborhood in Gaza City.
While the precise cause of the blast was not immediately announced, early suggestions indicate it was produced by explosive material that had been mishandled.
Local media reports referred to Saturday’s explosion as occurring at a house in the astern neighborhood of Shejaeya, while other reports identified the blast location as a fireworks workshop, according to AP.
The Hamas terrorist group that oversees the territory issued no immediate comment, and Israeli involvement is not being considered as a factor in the incident.
Fatal accidents such as this in the Gaza Strip are not uncommon, as Hamas relies on weapons manufacturing and storage facilities that are housed in civilian locations.

Saudi Arabia and Jordan reportedly appealed to Israel to remain vigilant against Turkish President Recep Erdogan’s plan to establish a foothold in Jerusalem.
By: World Israel News Staff
According to a report in the Israeli media on Thursday, two Arab nations and the Palestinian Authority (PA) appealed to Israeli officials to prevent Turkey from broadening its influence in Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods and Islamic sites.
Specifically, Jordan and Saudi Arabia reached out to Israel, asking the Jewish state to prevent recently reelected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from trying to exert Turkish control over Muslim sites in the Jewish state’s capital, reported Haaretz.
The alarm was sounded by Riyadh and Amman based on Turkish Islamic associations’ recent sponsorship of activities and in Jerusalem and its machinations related to Temple Mount protests, which included staging confrontations with Israeli guards at the site.

Prince William toured Jerusalem holy sites and paid a pilgrimage to the tomb of his great-grandmother on the final day of his historic tour to the region.
By: AP
Prince William toured sensitive Jerusalem holy sites on Thursday and paid a pilgrimage to the tomb of his great-grandmother on the final day of his historic royal visit to the Middle East.
The Duke of Cambridge’s Jerusalem leg is by far the most charged of his five-day tour of Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories — the first official visit of a member of the British royal family — as he ventures into the heart of world religion and regional politics.
The trip has been carefully orchestrated as a non-political event, and the prince has been watchful in his words and actions not to stoke controversy as he met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders and toured the region’s various locales. But the Jerusalem sites he visited are central to the century-old conflict and every step he took was closely scrutinized.
Prince William began his visit with a lookout of the Old City from the Mount of Olives in east Jerusalem. He then visited the nearby gravesite of his great-grandmother, Princess Alice, who saved Jews in the Holocaust and whose last wishes were to have her remains buried in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene above the Garden of Gethsemane.
He was then to visit a trio of key Muslim, Jewish and Christian sites before departing home to London. Prince William said he was particularly looking forward to his Old City visit that included stops at the contested holy site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, the Western Wall, the holiest place where Jews can pray, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where tradition holds that Jesus was crucified and buried.
Israeli politicians were angered his royal itinerary mentioned Jerusalem as being part of “the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” rather than Israel’s capital. Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin — who is running for mayor of the city in this year’s elections — called the reference a “distortion” that cannot “change reality.” His fellow hard-line Cabinet minister from the ruling Likud Party, Miri Regev, said it was “impolite” of the prince not to meet Jerusalem’s mayor in the city. Israel captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it. Israel considers the city, home to holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims and the emotional epicenter of the conflict, as an inseparable part of its capital. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as their future capital.
Britain has deep roots in the region, having governed Palestine from 1920 to 1948 under a League of Nations mandate. But it has since taken a back seat to the United States in matters of mediating war and peace efforts. The royal family has mostly steered clear of politics, and insisted the itinerary was merely reflecting the long-time, traditional vocabulary used by the British government.
The 36-year-old William, second in line to the throne, has already visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and met Israelis from all walks of life, from the beaches and promenades of Tel Aviv to demonstrations of high-tech entrepreneurs to swanky receptions with celebrities and politicians. He also visited a Palestinian town, where he met youth and tasted the local cuisine.

Why Iranian Chants of ‘Death to Israel’ Became ‘Death to Palestine’

Why Iranian Chants of ‘Death to Israel’ Became ‘Death to Palestine’Iranian protesters in Tehran. (Iranian Labor News Agency via AP)
The familiar regime-sanctioned slogans ‘Death to America and ‘Death to Israel’ have been replaced with the spontaneous slogans ‘Death to Palestine,’ ‘Help us, not Gaza’ and ‘Leave Syria alone and deal with Iran.’ What does this change signify?
By: Daniel Krygier
Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets in Tehran protesting against the economic crisis in the country. Despite the infusion of billions of dollars into Iran’s economy because of the nuclear deal, living conditions for ordinary Iranians continue to deteriorate. Imports have become increasingly expensive after the Iranian currency lost almost 50 percent of its value in the last six months alone.
What impact will the deepening economic crisis in Iran have on Israel and the wider Middle East?
The familiar regime-sanctioned slogans “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” have been replaced with the spontaneous slogans “Death to Palestine,” “Help us, not Gaza” and “Leave Syria alone and deal with Iran.”
The stated goal of President Obama’s nuclear deal was to moderate the Iranian regime through economic incentives and bring Iran back to the family of nations. However, as the slogans indicate, instead of improving the livings conditions for the Iranian people, the ayatollah regime has channeled billions of dollars to finance its wars in Syria, Gaza, Yemen and Iraq.
The Iranian regime has also prioritized its different weapons programs over raising the dismal living standards for ordinary Iranians at home.

By: World Israel News Staff
Hamas terrorists launched a barrage of rockets and mortar fire from the Gaza Strip at Israeli communities in the south in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The attack was part of an ongoing, low-intensity military conflict initiated by Hamas.
An Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft and IDF tank late Tuesday night fired at a vehicle belonging to a Hamas field commander described by the Israeli military as “heavily involved” in launching arson kites and explosive balloons from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
Sources in Gaza reported that the car was empty and that no one was harmed in the strike. The car was completely destroyed.
Earlier in the evening, an IDF aircraft targeted a vehicle used by a group of Palestinians to launch arson balloons from the northern Gaza Strip into Israel.

US ramps up pressure on Iran, calls on allies to stop buying oil

The Trump administration called on its allies to stop buying oil from Iran in a bid to weaken the Islamic Republic.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
The United States confirmed Tuesday that the government has asked countries around the world to stop buying Iranian oil by November 4th as it ramps up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.
In May, the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal.
Asked if they were passing this message along to everyone, including China – a major importer of Iranian oil – an unnamed State Department official said, “Yes, we are asking them to go to zero,” noting that if they do not comply, their companies will be sanctioned by the United States.
The official added that a US delegation is going to the Middle East next week to urge the big oil-producing countries in the Gulf to take up the slack as Iran will be cut out of the market when the American sanctions are re-imposed.
November 4th will mark the end of the 180-day window for countries to wind down their economic relations with Iran since President Donald Trump left the “terrible” agreement that limited controls on Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions that had crippled the country.
Iran’s European allies, in an attempt to preserve the deal, have been urging the US administration to exempt certain companies from punishment if they continue doing business with Tehran. The American official said that officially the rule was “No, we’re not granting waivers,” although he “would be hesitant to say zero waivers ever.”
The Iranian economy has plunged since the US left the nuclear deal – even before the sanctions were put back into place. The currency is almost worthless (currently one USD costs 90,000 rials), and thousands of protestors have returned to the streets of Tehran over the last three days.
“Help us, not Gaza,” and “Leave Syria alone and deal with Iran” are some of the slogans the demonstrators have shouted, angry at the billions of dollars the regime spends on projecting its power in regional skirmishes and supporting terrorist organizations instead of helping its own citizens.

Knesset advances bill fighting Palestinian payments to terrorists

The Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee advanced its attempts to penalize the PA for incentivizing terror through stipends.
By: World Israel News Staff
The Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Wednesday approved a bill which requires the government to deduct the amount the Palestinian Authority pays terrorists from the taxes and tariffs that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
The Knesset plenum is expected to vote on the bill and pass it into law on Monday.
According to a Defense Ministry report based on the PA’s budget, the PA paid terrorists over a billion shekels in 2017 and increased the amount to over NIS 1.4 billion in its 2018 budget.
The bill, which had already passed a vote at the Foreign Affair and Defense Committee, is based on a proposal submitted by Member of Knesset (MK) Elazar Stern (Yesh Atid) and other lawmakers, with the addition of certain clauses from a similar government-sponsored bill.
The legislation determines that at the end of each year, the defense minister will draft a report on the funds the PA pays terrorists. The financial penalty will be determined by the report.

Analysis: Why Netanyahu opposes a bill against Palestinian funding of terror
 June 27, 2018
Analysis: Why Netanyahu opposes a bill against Palestinian funding of terrorPM Benjamin Netanyahu (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)
The prime minister attempted to block a bill that would stop the transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority as long as it pays stipends to terrorists and their families. Why?
By: Mati Wagner, World Israel News
The reasoning behind a bill passed Wednesday by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is simple: Israel should stop facilitating Palestinian incentivization of terrorism.
According to figures provided by the committee, every year the Palestinian Authority (PA) pays NIS 1.2 billion ($300 million) to terrorists and their families.
Israel indirectly makes this possible by transferring to the PA tax revenues collected by Israeli customs authorities on Palestinian goods sold to Israelis.
Lawmakers from both the coalition and the opposition voted unanimously to send the bill to the Knesset for ratification. It is expected to be passed by a large majority when it comes up for a vote on Monday.
The US has already passed a similar law called the Taylor Force Act, which blocks most US aid to the PA as long as it maintains its policy of paying stipends to terrorists and their families.

Warsaw appears to be caving in to pressure and backtracking on recent legislation that criminalized discussion of Polish collusion with Nazi Germany.
By: AP and World Israel News Staf
Polish lawmakers are debating a new version of a Holocaust speech law that would remove criminal provisions for statements deemed harmful to Poland’s good name.
A version of the law passed earlier this year criminalized discussion of Polish collusion with Nazi Germany, calling for prison terms of up to three years for breaking the law.
It sparked a major diplomatic crisis with Israel, where many felt it was an attempt to whitewash Poland’s history of violence against Jews during World War II. The United States warned it threatened academic freedom and that it would harm Poland’s “strategic position.”
In February, a high-level Polish government delegation visiting Israel for emergency talks over the new legislation insisted that the new law itself was not a subject for negotiation.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appeared to be backing down on the legislation after presenting a new draft bill to Parliament.
Morawiecki asked the lower house of parliament to remove the jail terms from the bill, Reuters reported.

As fighting escalates in southern Syria, with government forces penetrating rebel-held territories in Daraa province, up to 50,000 people have been displaced.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
As fighting escalated in southern Syria, government forces on Tuesday pushed deeper into rebel-held territories in Daraa province in a week-long offensive that the United Nations estimates has displaced up to 50,000 people.
Jordan said its borders will remain closed for any new refugees, calling on the U.N. to provide security in southern Syria.
Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said aid officials were “deeply concerned” for those fleeing the fighting and heading toward the sealed border with Jordan. He called on warring parties to “ensure the protection of these civilians, according to international law.”
Daraa’s residents described living in extreme fear and said many had also headed to territory bordering Israel near the Golan Heights, believing it to be safer.
Waseem Kiwan, a 36-year old civilian in the village of Tafas north of Daraa city said nothing has been spared in the intensive bombing campaign.
“The area is heading toward a catastrophe, a humanitarian catastrophe in every sense of the word,” he said. “People are living in extreme fear.”
“The safest place is the border with Israel because the regime and Russian airplanes cannot strike the area,” he said.

Senior officials in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and ‎the United Arab Emirates met with White House ‎adviser Jared Kushner and US Special ‎Representative for International Negotiations Jason ‎Greenblatt in recent days and reportedly conveyed this message.

‎They also said they have become fed up with Abbas’ rejectionism.

Kushner expressed a willingness to bypass Abbas in an interview that appeared this week with Al-Quds, a Palestinian newspaper.

A top Egyptian official told Israel Hayom Sunday ‎that the moderate Arab nations’ position was ‎‎”unanimous” and that Cairo, Amman, Riyadh and Abu ‎Dhabi would not oppose an attempt by Washington to go ‎over Abbas’ head in this case.‎

Israeli lawmaker: Block Prince William’s visit to Temple Mount under Arab auspicesPrince William, Duke of Cambridge (Facebook)
Israeli MK Bezalel Smotrich has asked Netanyahu to block Prince William’s visit to the Temple Mount under the auspices of the Palestinian Authority, saying such an incident would undermine Israel’s sovereignty at the holy site.
By: World Israel News Staff
Member of Knesset (MK) Bezalel Smotrich has dispatched a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asking him to block Prince William’s visit to the Temple Mount under the auspices of the Palestinian Authority (PA), saying such an incident would undermine Israel’s sovereignty at the holy site.
William is slated to visit Jerusalem’s Old City on Thursday during the segment of the visit categorized by Kensington Palace as a visit to the “Palestinian Occupied Territories.”
In the letter authored Sunday, Smotrich wrote that he was “shocked” to learn that William will be visiting the Temple Mount and the Western Wall under the auspices of the PA.

The IDF released details of Hamas’ operational protocol for kite and balloon arson attacks, through which terror group operatives have destroyed thousands of acres of Israeli land.
By: World Israel News Staff
On Sunday, the IDF revealed evidence demonstrating that the Hamas terror group organizes and carries out kite-based arson attacks originating in the Gaza Strip, refuting claims that the terror activity represents the spontaneous demonstrations of young Gazans.
Arson terror using kites and balloons has been a common tactic since Hamas began its violent “March of Return” riots at the end of March. The low-tech tactic involves attaching burning receptacles or explosive devices to kites or balloons, which are launched into Israeli territory where they have destroyed thousands of acres of land and caused upwards of 5 million shekels of damage.
This video shows how Hamas terrorists prepare and launch arson and explosive device-laden kites and balloons, targeting Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip.

US President Donald Trump said in an interview with the TBN Christian network that evangelical Christians expressed their appreciation for his decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem more than Jews did.
Trump made the statement to Mike Huckabee on the talk show of the former Republican governor of Arkansas, who is also the father of Trump’s press secretary.
The interview took place at the White House on June 18.
“I tell you what, I get more calls of thank you from evangelicals, and I see it in the audiences and everything else, than I do from Jewish people,” Trump said. “And the Jewish people appreciate it, but the evangelicals appreciate it more than the Jews.”
Huckabee said in response: “It’s not a surprise though, Mr. President, because evangelicals are people of the book. And they believe you kept a promise, were fulfilling really a 3,000-year old commitment to recognize Jerusalem as the capital.”

A Palestinian terrorist’s attorney claimed her client’s sentence should be lightened because dying as a “shahid” [martyr] is the only way a depressed Muslim can commit suicide.
By: World Israel News Staff
Defense Attorney Lea Tsemel claimed before the Supreme Court on Monday that her client’s attempt to kill an IDF soldier should be excused because terrorism is the only way a depressed Muslim can commit suicide.
The story was first published by Hakol Hayehudi (The Jewish Voice), an Israeli news site.
In an appeal case heard by the court, Tsemel explained that Amar Jandav, a Palestinian from Salfit, a village near the Samarian town of Ariel, became depressed after the death of a close friend.
Jandav decided to commit suicide. However, being a devout Muslim, he could not do so, as Islam prohibits suicide. Dying as a “shahid,” or religious martyr, while carrying out a terrorist attack, on the other hand, was Jandav’s only option, Tsemel said.

The IDF has carried out multiple strikes in recent weeks against the Islamic State’s (ISIS) affiliate in the Sinai Peninsula, the Arabic language Al-Araby Al-Jadid reported on Monday.
According to the report, the IDF attacked vehicles, tunnels and structures used by Islamic terrorists in northern Sinai.
The report, quoting a “confirmed source in the field” and local “tribal sources,” noted that while the attacks are not a new phenomenon, their scope has increased significantly.
The majority of the targets were in the cities of Rafah and Sheikh Suwaid, which have seen an intensive incursion of Israeli drone aircraft over recent weeks, the report said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly pledged not to allow ISIS to establish itself militarily on Israel’s southern border

The Presbyterian Church (USA) Assembly passed eight resolutions against Israel and called it an “apartheid state.”
The anti-Israel Christian church passed eight resolutions that excoriated the Jewish state at its biennial conference on Friday. In contrast, it had only one against the ongoing carnage in Syria and another on Iran.
The General Assembly (GA) of the leadership of the Presbyterian Church-USA (PCUSA) overwhelmingly approved resolutions that censured Israel, while voting down those deemed not critical enough. According to the Presbyterian Outlet news service, for example, IDF actions on the border with Gaza during the recent Palestinian riots were panned, with no mention of the Hamas instigators of the violence and its attempted infiltrations, firebombings and sabotage of the border fence.
The Church also approved a resolution calling on the real estate company RE/MAX to stop working in Judea and Samaria.

Britain’s Prince William on Monday toured the ruins of the Roman city of Jerash and met with children, including Syrian refugees, from a UN-run education program on the second day of a five-day Mideast tour that will also take him to Israel and the Palestinian-run territories.

The 36-year-old William was accompanied by Crown Prince Hussein, 23, with whom he watched England’s World Cup match against Panama at his host’s residence late on Sunday.

William, an avid soccer fan, arrived in Jordan on Sunday afternoon, when the England-Panama game was underway. Hussein recorded it for him, and the two watched it later Sunday on a huge TV screen at the crown prince’s residence. England thrashed Panama 6-1, advancing to the second round.

Before settling down to soccer, William spoke at a garden reception at the British Embassy, praising Britain’s historic ties with Jordan and the kingdom’s commitment to hosting Syrian and Palestinian refugees.

The ruins of Jerash are one of Jordan’s main tourist attractions. During the Roman era, it was once home to a small Jewish community.

William’s wife, the former Kate Middleton, visited the archaeological site as a child when her father worked for British Airways and the family lived in Jordan for close to three years in the 1980s. A Middleton family photo shows Kate in Jerash with her father and younger sister Pippa.

At a conference Sunday on various issues regarding legal and illegal migrant workers, Professor Shlomo Mor Yosef, the PIBA director, said that foreign workers from all over the world “are knocking on our door to come work in Israel.”
They want to come because of “the high minimum wage, and good work conditions that include strict work hours, payment for overtime, health insurance, etc.,” Mor Yosef said.

Israel continued to suffer from the Palestinian arson terrorism emanating from Gaza.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israel’s south continued to contend with the Palestinian airborne arson terrorism on Sunday as firebomb-laden kites and balloons set new fires near communities on the border with Gaza.
Firefighters extinguished blazes near Kibbutz Kissufim, Be’eri and Nir Am.
In the morning, a balloon tied to a suspicious object landed in the yard of a home in the southern city of Sderot. The resident alerted the police, which dispatched a sapper to deal with the potential threat.
Sunday’s fires came a day after incendiary kites launched by Palestinian terrorists from Gaza started 26 blazes in southern Israel.
The IDF in recent days deployed a new detection system to combat the terrorism which has been plaguing the south for some three months, but with apparently limited success.
Israeli farmers in proximity to Gaza have been subjected to hundreds of burning kites. Some 500 blazes have destroyed several hundred acres of wood and farmland and have ruined produce worth millions of shekels.

If Labour is elected to lead Britain, it will recognize a Palestinian state “very early on,” said party head Jeremy Corbyn.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said Friday that a government under his leadership would recognize a Palestinian state “very early on.”
“I think there has to be a recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people to their own state which we, as a Labour Party, said we would recognize in government as a full state as part of the United Nations,” he said.
Such recognition would come “very early on” under a Labour government, he said.
Corbyn said the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US Embassy there was a “catastrophic mistake.”
Corbyn spoke during his first international trip outside Europe since he was elected Labour Party leader in 2015.
On Friday, he toured Zaatari, Jordan’s largest camp for Syrian refugees. On Saturday, he visited the Al-Baqa’a camp for Palestinians who consider themselves refugees.
With his visit to Jordan, Corbyn appeared to be burnishing his foreign policy credentials.

Israel is promoting a transportation plan to boost peace hopes and connect Israel and the Palestinians to their neighbors in the Middle East.
By: World Israel News Staff
A senior Israeli cabinet minister is pushing a plan to build a region-wide train network that he says could link Israel to much of the Arab world.
Yisrael Katz, Minister of Transportation and Intelligence, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are pushing forward with plans to extend an existing train line in Israel to the Jordanian border and into the Judea and Samaria region.
The projects would give Jordan and the Palestinians greater access to Israel’s Haifa port.
Katz has previously presented the plan, dubbed “Tracks for Regional Peace,” which includes a rail network stretching through Jordan and Saudi Arabia to the Gulf.
Israel does not have formal relations with Saudi Arabia, but Katz suggested the issue be quietly raised through back channels.

The BBC said Andrew Marr breached editorial guidelines by comparing Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children to the Assad regime’s chemical attack on civilians.
By: World Israel News Staff
The BBC has found Andrew Marr guilty of breaching editorial guidelines by claiming Israel had killed “lots of Palestinian kids,” the London Daily Mail reported Sunday.
The Corporation’s extraordinary ruling against one of its most senior personalities is almost unprecedented, the newspaper said.
During the April 8 edition, Marr concluded a discussion of the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons attack on civilians by saying: “And the Middle East is aflame again. I mean there’s lots of Palestinian kids being killed further south as well by Israeli forces.”
His comments were a reference to clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Gaza.
Journalist and Jewish activist Jonathan Sacerdoti complained, writing: “When talking about a story on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Andrew Marr for some reason decided to talk about Israel (which was unrelated anyway).

Hezbollah’s main accounts on social media sites Twitter and Facebook were unceremoniously shut down on Saturday.
The terrorist group immediately complained about the move on another media site, Telegram, claiming that it was done because of the “important role” these accounts play in the activities of their organization.
The shutdown took place a day after Hezbollah uploaded footage on its Twitter account that showed Hezbollah blowing up an IDF patrol in 2006 on the Lebanese border – the incident which sparked the Second Lebanon War.
Israel has asked Twitter and Facebook to remove Hezbollah’s accounts numerous times. In 2012, Facebook removed pages created by Hezbollah over its incitement to violence, and at the end of 2017 the company acquiesced again (but not Twitter).

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced at his Sunday cabinet meeting that Bulgaria will open an honorary consulate in Jerusalem very soon.
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov decided on the step when he visited Israel earlier this month.
In doing so, Sofia will be following in the footsteps of Prague. The Czech Republic reopened its honorary consulate in Jerusalem at the end of May after a hiatus of 18 months caused by the death of its previous honorary consul, Israeli-Czech journalist Tatiana Hoffman.
However, unlike the Czechs, who according to their new consul see the move as focusing more on economic issues, the Bulgarian prime minister views this legation as having a broader mandate, the prime minister said.
Borisov, he noted, “took care to explain to me in our conversation that this consulate will not only deal with Bulgarian matters in Jerusalem, but with Bulgarian issues all over Israel.”

Obituary: Why we needed Charles KrauthammerCharles Krauthammer (Youtube/Screenshot)
Legendary Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer passed away Thursday from cancer. “As a proud American and as a proud son of the Jewish people, you harnessed your formidable intellect to defend liberty and the Jewish state,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote in a letter expressing “deep sorrow.” Following is a tribute to the brilliant political analyst and supporter of the State of Israel.
By: Jonathan S. Tobin, editor-in-chief, JNS
Charles Krauthammer would have been an inspirational figure even if he hadn’t become a writer and television commentator. The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who died on June 21 at the age of 68 was laid low as a 22-year-old medical student when a pool accident left him a quadriplegic. Knowing that people would consider his ability to “just muddle through life” a “great achievement” because of what had happened, he resolved to carry on as if he had never been injured at all. Rather than accept that his disability would define his life, Krauthammer continued on with his medical studies at Harvard University and become a brilliant psychiatrist.

Top Palestinian negotiator accuses Trump team of trying to ‘bring down PA’
 June 23, 2018
Top Palestinian negotiator accuses Trump team of trying to ‘bring down PA’Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, speaks during a news conference. (AP/
Amid ongoing meetings in Jerusalem between the US’ Mideast peace delegation and Israeli leaders, Saeb Erekat promoted the Palestinian boycott of the Trump administration, which he says seeks to undercut PA leadership.
By: World Israel News Staff
On Saturday, top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat accused President Donald Trump’s peace team of plotting to topple the Palestinian Authority.
The accusations were launched amid a visit to Jerusalem by Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner and US envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt, who met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday and were slated to meet with him again on Saturday night.
The Palestinians reportedly refused to meet with the US team as part of their boycott of the Trump administration following the president’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the US’ subsequent move of its embassy to that location.
In response to a statement released by Kushner and Greenblatt referencing discussions with Netanyahu about humanitarian issues related to the Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Hamas terror group, Erekat claimed, “The goal behind this is to sustain [Hamas’] coup and keep Gaza separated from [Palestinian-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria] . . . to creat[e] a mini-state in Gaza while bringing down the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank,” reported the official Palestinian media outlet WAFA.
“In order to target the leadership, the US administration starts by creating a state of destabilization and confusion in [Judea and Samaria] and at the same time works on undercutting international consensus on rejecting the so-called deal of the century and American conspiracies and support for the Palestinian cause,” said Erekat.
His reference to the “deal of the century” was an allusion to Trump’s as-yet unrevealed Mideast peace plan, which the Palestinians have repeatedly declared they will reject in no uncertain terms.

A Palestinian driver rammed his car into four IDF soldiers—among them three women and one man—lightly hurting them.
The driver initially fled the scene, driving into the nearby village of Husan in what the IDF suspected was a terror attack.
The driver later turned himself in, claiming the incident was an accident.
The soldiers were lightly wounded and received treatment from United Hatzalah first response unit at the scene before being transferred to a nearby hospital for additional treatment
Here is a video of the driver turning himself in:

Earlier in June, Israeli troops near Hebron stopped an attempted car-ramming attack in which a driver tried to use his vehicle to run over soldiers on a road leading to the Tomb of the Patriarchs. That driver was eliminated by IDF troops.
Car-ramming attacks are among the tactics used by Palestinian terrorists to target Israeli civilians and soldiers alike. While terrorists in Gaza have favored arson kites as of late, which have been used to infiltrate Israeli territory and damage thousands of acres of farmland and nature preserves, vehicular attacks remain a significant risk in Judea and Samaria.

Iran announced a list of 15 demands for improving relations with the United States, including a U.S. return to the 2015 nuclear accord, in response to a similar list of demands made by Washington last month.
In an article in a state-owned newspaper Thursday, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the U.S. to stop providing arms to the “invaders of Yemen,” referring to Saudi Arabia, and to drop its opposition to the nuclear disarmament of Israel.
It was reported this week that The Trump administration signed a secret letter declining to pressure Israel to sign an international nuclear-nonproliferation treaty.
Zarif’s demands came in response to requirements laid out in May by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who called for a wholesale change in Iran’s military and regional policies, threatening the “strongest sanctions in history” if it refused. The U.S. withdrew from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers earlier that month.

It has already had its “baptism of fire” in recent weeks during violent clashes at the Gaza border fence – with great success, according to the IDF.
The drone can fly extremely quickly for a distance of half a kilometer, hover 100 meters over the exact location of a group of rioters and send down various means of riot-dispersal – mainly tear gas– without endangering soldiers’ lives.
Until now, they had to come within the range of the rock- or fire-bomb throwers in order to shoot gas canisters at them with specially equipped rifles.
The drone is safe, too, as “No rock can reach that high,” explains Major A., the liaison officer of the Benjamin Brigade. He was one of the project leaders who developed the device together with the Military Research and Development Administration over the past year.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the as yet unrevealed US peace plan.
By: World Israel News Staff
On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump Jared Kushner and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt in Jerusalem.
After visits to Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, Greenblatt and Kushner were expected to provide details of the US-sponsored peace plan to the Israeli premiere, with an eye to jump-starting negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, which has maintained a boycott of the Trump administration since its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the US’ subsequent embassy move.
While PA President Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly rejected the US’ role in the peace process since Trump’s Jerusalem declaration, King Abdullah II of Jordan met with Kushner and Greenblatt on Wednesday, declaring that the “US has an important role” in future talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Survey: Discrimination high against Jews and other minorities in NYC

Most of those harassed do not bother reporting the problem, which is a statistic the agency that commissioned the survey wants to change.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
An official New York City (NYC) agency came out on Tuesday with a dismaying report on the rate of discrimination suffered by minorities in the city, including Jews, yet said that the overwhelming number of victims do not report the crime when it happens.
The NYC Commission on Human Rights surveyed 3,105 Muslim, Arab, Jewish, South Asian and Sikh New Yorkers about their experiences of “bias harassment, discrimination, and acts of hate” between July 2016 and late 2017. The report highlights the fact that this was the period leading up to and following the 2016 presidential elections.
During this period, a particularly charged atmosphere prevailed in many places across the country due to the nature of the battle between the Republican and Democratic contenders for office and its aftermath.
Close to 1,000 of the survey respondents identified themselves as Jews. Unsurprisingly, those who were observant were more likely than their co-religionists to be verbally harassed (39.2% vs. 21%), but almost 40% of all minorities in this category reported such harassment.
The questions regarding physical assault were not broken down by religion, race or ethnicity.
In all, nine percent of respondents said they had been physically assaulted in this time period, while nearly one in five people who wear religious clothing said they have been shoved on a subway platform.
On the work front, while 16% of those surveyed said that they experienced racial, religious or ethnic discrimination in their place of work or while seeking a job, over half of the Orthodox and Hasidic respondents said this was the reason they were not hired. However, non-Orthodox Jews still reported significantly higher numbers (22.8%) than the general public in this area of discrimination.
In spite of these high numbers, seven out of ten respondents said they did not report the bias incident to any law enforcement agency or even a faith-based organization. The reasons they cited were the fear of retaliation or that their reports would not being taken seriously, with some claiming that previous reporting did not result in action.
As the government agency responsible for enforcing the city’s Human Rights Law, the Commission also recommended ways to encourage reporting as well as preventing bias incidents. These included working with various ethnic organizations, including Jewish ones, to educate people as to their rights. The agency also launched an ad campaign on social media and in 15 ethnic media outlets.
Jewish organizational figures were quick to praise the initiative.
“As a Jewish New Yorker who grew up in Brooklyn, I know firsthand that anti-Semitism, xenophobia and bias still unfortunately exist in our great city,” said Jonathan Greenspun, commissioner and board member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York.

Israeli Security Minister: Major Gaza operation to topple Hamas ‘very likely’Glove-wearing Hamas terrorists in Gaza. (Abed Rahim Khatib/Flash90)
The Strategic Affairs minister said Thursday that an extensive military operation in Gaza aimed at toppling Hamas could be launched.
By: World Israel News Staff
Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan told Army Radio Thursday that a major military operation in Gaza in “the next few months” with the goal of toppling Hamas is a possibility.
Asked if Israel is on the verge of a full-scale military operation in Gaza, Erdan replied in the affirmative:
“Yes, there is a very good chance after what we have experienced in the last four weeks. We might have to, in order to return the peace and the deterrence. It would also be a move that shows Hamas has to be taken down. In the coming months we will have to enter into a major military operation in Gaza.”
“It’s not something we want, but we might have no choice,” he said.
There was a marked escalation this week in Gaza with terrorists firing dozens of rockets at Jewish communities in the south.

Hamas paid NIS 8,000 to a Gaza family to say that their baby died of tear gas inhalation and not of natural causes.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
In an indictment filed Thursday in a Beersheba court, the Palestinian defendant admitted that Hamas paid his family to lie and say that his eight-month-old cousin died from inhalation of tear gas shot by the IDF.
In the case of State of Israel v. Mahmoud Omar, the defendant, whose infant cousin Leila al-Ghandour passed away from a blood disease in May in the heat of violent rioting along the Gaza border with Israel, said that Hamas wanted to take advantage of the timing of the death.
Omar will be standing trial for acting as lookout on May 28th while two other terrorists tried to infiltrate Israel in order to set an unmanned IDF post aflame.

US peace efforts in the region have come up against the Palestinians’ refusal to even meet.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
US President Donald Trump’s Mideast team, led by son-in-law Jared Kushner, is in the region this week visiting Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel in an attempt to advance an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.
One visit that will not be made is with the Palestinian leadership, which has repeatedly attacked the Trump administration over its decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is reportedly under pressure from Arab leaders to cooperate with the Americans.
On Tuesday, the Kushner team met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and on Wednesday with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, acknowledging the talks only after the fact. They are expected to visit Qatar, followed by Israel toward the end of the week.
Kushner and envoy Jason Greenblatt issued only vague statements regarding the meetings, saying they discussed the “humanitarian situation in Gaza” and US efforts to “facilitate peace between Israelis and Palestinians.” They did not release an itinerary.

At a meeting on Wednesday in Brussels, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Committee ruled that the Palestinian Authority and Hamas continue to violate international humanitarian law by refusing to return the body of captured IDF Lieutenant Hadar Goldin.

Goldin was killed in 2014 amid a UN-brokered ceasefire during Operation Protective Edge. Since then, Hamas has held his body, along with the body of IDF soldier Oron Shaul.

On Wednesday, the EU committee adopted a resolution on the matter during a special session attended by the Goldin family, at which representatives of Romania, Hungary and the Netherlands demanded that all Gaza humanitarian assistance be conditioned on the return of captured Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers currently held by Hamas.

The resolution, passed by the heads of the factions in the Pamplona municipality, the capital of the Navarre province, also expressed support of the Palestinian “right of return” and the Palestinians’ right to hold a peaceful protest “which has allegedly “been suppressed with force by the Israeli army.”
The resolution also called on European Union (EU) members to increase their pressure on Israel and impose sanctions to force it to stop its “aggression” against the Palestinians, according to the report.

US Ambassador Haley announced her country’s decision to pull out of the UN Human Rights Council, noting its “chronic bias against Israel.”
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
The United States is leaving the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, which Ambassador Nikki Haley called “an organization that is not worthy of its name.”
Haley said Tuesday the US had given the human rights body “opportunity after opportunity” to make changes. She lambasted the council for “its chronic bias against Israel” and lamented the fact that its membership includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights,” Haley said.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, appearing alongside Haley at the State Department, said there was no doubt that the council once had a “noble vision.”
“But today we need to be honest,” Pompeo said. “The Human Rights Council is a poor defender of human rights.”

Israel welcomed the US announcement that it was withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) due to its anti-Israel bias.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement thanking President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley for “their courageous decision against the hypocrisy and the lies of the so-called UN Human Rights Council.”
“For years, the UNHRC has proven to be a biased, hostile, anti-Israel organization that has betrayed its mission of protecting human rights,” Netanyahu charged. “Instead of dealing with regimes that systematically violate human rights, the UNHRC obsessively focuses on Israel, the one genuine democracy in the Middle East.”

Turkey will receive on Thursday the first of 100 of the most advanced jet fighters in the world that it has bought from the US, a Pentagon spokesman said Tuesday.
The purchase was opposed by Israel and the US Congress.
“Although Turkey has long been a participant in the development of the F-35 program, the US Senate had sought to block Turkey from receiving the stealth warplanes through language in the National Defense Authorization Act amid a deterioration of the US-Turkey relationship,” CNN reported.
Israel, which has a strained relationship with Turkey despite officially being allies, has also reportedly expressed concerns about the sale of the fighter jets to Ankara.

Russia has been expelling foreign rabbis, claiming they compromise the country’s security.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Chief Rabbi of Siberia Asher Krichevsky is the latest in a series of rabbis who have faced expulsion by Russia for purportedly threatening the country’s stability.
Krichevsky was stripped of his residence permit after being charged with attempting to “destroy Russia’s constitutional order,” according to a synagogue official in the Siberian city of Omsk.
Speaking to AFP, the unnamed official added, “Neither the rabbi nor his lawyer was informed of the exact nature of the charge because the case was immediately classified as secret.”
This is not the first time that a foreign-born rabbi has been accused of threatening state security.
In January, the JTA reported that a 12-year veteran Chabad rabbi from New York was deported because the Russian intelligence agency said he was involved in “extremist behavior” – but the court would not make the specific charges public.

French media reported that a woman crying “Allahu akbar” — “God is great” in Arabic — hurt two people with a box cutter at a supermarket in southern France.
A man was struck in the chest during the late-morning attack in La Seyne-sur-Mer, outside the Mediterranean port of Toulon, but the wound is not life-threatening, prosecutor Bernard Marchal told AFP.
A woman working at a checkout counter was also wounded, though not as seriously. Both victims were taken to a hospital.
“It appears to be an isolated case by a person with known psychological problems,” Marchal said, “though that doesn’t exclude the possibility that she may have been radicalized.”

Gonen Segev, a former government minister and medical doctor who served time for smuggling drugs into Israel, is now charged with spying for Iran.

By: TPS

Former Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Gonen Segev was arrested last month by the Israel Security Agency and indicted on charges of aiding the enemy in time of war and espionage against the State of Israel, the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency) revealed Monday.

Segev was extradited to Israel in May from Equatorial Guinea after the central African country refused to let him in due to his criminal past: The former pediatrician and member of the now defunct Tzomet Party during the 1990s, served a five-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2004 of attempting to smuggle thousands of ecstacy tablets into Israel.

Upon landing in Israel, Segev was arrested by the Shin Bet and Israel Police on suspicion that he had been in touch with Iranian intelligence agents.

The Shin Bet said its investigation revealed that Segev had been recruited by Iranian intelligence, which had contacted him via the Iranian embassy in Nigeria. In 2016, Segev filed a request to have his Israeli medical license reinstated in order to be able to return to Israel. His attorney, Yoram Pomerantz, told Army Radio at the time that Segev had been working as a doctor in Nigeria.

Segev reportedly even travelled to Iran to meet with his handlers and, according to the statement, met with them in safe houses and hotels at unspecified locations, where he received encryption equipment to communicate with the Iranian agents.

Segev gave his handlers information pertaining to Israel’s energy sector and security installations as well as diplomatic and security officials, the Shin Bet said.
According to the statement, Segev tried to fool Israelis with connections to fields of interest to the Iranians into meeting with intelligence agents whom he presented as businessmen. All further details pertaining to the case have been placed under gag order.

In a terror cell of five, one terrorist was killed and another seriously injured as they used a bomb to carve an opening in the underground barrier.
Israel is currently constructing an underground wall around the Gaza Strip to thwart attack tunnels dug into Israeli territory from the coastal enclave.
Israel has also started building an underwater barrier.
The IDF denied Palestinian reports that the terrorists were shot by Israeli troops.
The army would not immediately provide details on what was damaged during the incident, which occurred near the now-abandoned Karni Crossing in the northern Gaza Strip — a frequent site of riots and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops.

Britain condemns ‘anti-Israel bias’ at UN Human Rights Council

Britain condemns ‘anti-Israel bias’ at UN Human Rights CouncilUK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson addresses the UN Human Rights Council (Magali Girardin/Keystone via AP)
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the UNHRC’s dedicated agenda item on Israel was “disproportionate and damaging to the cause of peace.”
By: AP
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday urged the UN Human Rights Council to reform its treatment of Israel.
But while he joined the United States in demanding an end to what has been been described as the body’s bias against the Jewish state, he urged the US not to pull out of the UNHRC.
Addressing the opening of the 38th council session, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson criticized the council’s controversial Agenda Item 7, a permanent fixture on the schedule exclusively devoted to discussing Israel’s purported rights abuses.
Speaking to the Human Rights Council, Johnson said that its dedicated agenda item on Israel was “disproportionate and damaging to the cause of peace.”
Johnson said: “But I stress that that does not mean that we in the UK are blind to the value of this council.”
Johnson said the council’s work on the Israel-Palestinian conflict could have value under the right conditions.
Diplomats have told The Associated Press that a US withdrawal from the 47-member council could come as early as Tuesday.
Washington, some European countries and Australia have sided with Israel in condemning Item 7 as prejudiced, noting that countries with worse rights records in recent years, like Syria, are spared such intense scrutiny.

Gaza front escalates as Hamas fires rockets, IDF responds

Gaza front escalates as Hamas fires rockets, IDF respondsSmoke rises after a house was blown up during a military operation in Gaza Strip. (Abed Rahim Khatib/Flash90).
For the first time in two weeks, Palestinian terror groups fired rockets at communities in southern Israel, triggering a strong Israeli response.
By: World Israel News Staff
Palestinian terror groups operating in Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip fired three rockets at southern Israel early Monday morning, the army said, after Israeli aircraft hit a number of targets in the coastal enclave in response to numerous arson attacks by Palestinians the day before.
One of the rockets landed in Gaza, according to the IDF spokesman.
Red alert sirens were heard in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, the Ashkelon industrial zone, Kibbutz Yad Mordechai and Netiv Ha’asara.
Neither Israel nor Hamas reported injuries.
These were the first rockets to be fired at Israel in over two weeks, breaking an unofficial ceasefire that has largely held since a day-long flare-up in late May.
Before the Palestinian rocket attack, Israeli fighter jets carried out strikes on three military compounds and one weapons manufacturing plant belonging to the Hamas terror group, which rules the Strip, in northern Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces said.
In response to the rockets, IAF fighter jets struck nine military targets in two military compounds and in a munition manufacturing site belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has circulated, but not yet published, his report that blames both sides for the conflict
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A UN report is poised to criticize Israel for its conduct during the violent rioting by Gazans at the border fence, but it also places blame on Hamas, according to Israel’s Channel 10, which acquired a copy of the document.
The report, authored by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, censures Gaza’s Hamas government for its part in the deadly conflict. Hamas has “inflamed and encouraged a highly volatile situation that contributed to violent actions at the fence and risked a serious escalation,” said the report.
According to Channel 10, the report also hit Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for his part in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by withholding the salaries of government employees in the coastal enclave.
The report was mandated by the December 2016 Security Council Resolution 2334, which called on Israel to “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
Former US President Barack Obama, in his last days in office, instructed the US to abstain on the motion, allowing it to pass 14-0. Jerusalem vociferously criticized the move at the time, with Minister Yuval Steinitz saying that the US had “abandoned Israel, its only ally in the Middle East,” and that its behavior was not that of a friend.
Since President Donald Trump came into office, however, the US has been delaying the UN’s publication of an update on the situation in Israel and on its borders – until now. The document was given first to members of the Security Council, Channel 10 reported.

Shi’ite forces loyal to Assad were killed in an airstrike along the Syria-Iraq border as ISIS and Iran battle for control of the Tehran-Damascus road.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Syrian state media reported Monday that an airstrike against pro-government forces in the far east of the country near the Iraqi border resulted in several dozen deaths.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Hezbollah terrorists and other non-Syrians loyal to the Assad regime were targeted by warplanes. In all, about 40 were killed. The death toll was expected to rise because a number of individuals were injured critically.
SOHR said that it was unclear whether those killed were Lebanese Hezbollah or Iraqi Shi’ites – or both.
It added that hundreds of ISIS members were able to cross the Euphrates River from its east bank to the west, where ISIS is trying to close Iran’s most important strategic route: the Tehran-Beirut road.
The Syrian state TV report said the airstrike occurred around midnight in the village of al-Hari, to the southeast of the border town of Boukamal, and was carried out by the US-led coalition battling the Islamic State group.
But a coalition spokesman said it had not carried out any strikes in the area.
The report, quoting an unnamed military official, gave no breakdown of the casualties other than saying there “were several martyrs and others were wounded.”

“I feel like this stabbing was not something that is personal to me. It is against the entire people of Israel… Pray,” terror victim Shuva Malka said.
By: World Israel News Staff
Shuva Malka, the 18-year-old high school student who was critically wounded by a Palestinian terrorist in a stabbing attack in Afula last Monday, thanked Israel’s security forces and medical teams for saving her life while calling on the Jewish nation to pray for her.
“Thank you to the Master of the World who really did give us a huge miracle,” she said from her bed at HaEmek Medical Center in Afula on Sunday, Israel’s Ynet news reported.
“Every second in which I am alive and strong, thank God, is not to be taken for granted at all,” said Malka.
She was initially listed in critical condition, but her situation has recently improved.
Professor Doron Kopelman, director of the surgical team at HaEmek Medical Center, said the patient “is recovering from a very serious, dramatic stabbing, and there was a huge risk to her life. She will remain with us for a few more days, and I hope that she will be able to gradually return to normal life.”
The 20-year-old terrorist, Nur Shinawi of Jenin, was arrested shortly after the attack. The Nazareth Magistrate’s Court on Monday extended his remand by a week.

‘Fire kites’ from Gaza cause severe damage in Israel

The scorching heat on Saturday exacerbated the fires caused by incendiary kites, launched by Gaza terrorists, that landed in Israel’s southern communities, causing severe damage but no casualties.
Palestinians in Gaza continued to throw incendiary kites at southern Israel on Saturday, launching fires in at least 15 locations – some close to peoples’ homes.
Temperatures were unusually high – 38 degrees Celsius – helping the fires to spread further. Hundreds of acres of farmland and nature reserves were destroyed.

erusalem mufti: Trump seeks to ‘liquidate Palestinian cause’
 June 15, 2018
In a holiday sermon on Friday, the grand mufti of Jerusalem took aim at the US administration, leveling serious accusations in the run up to a regional visit by US envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt.
By: World Israel News Staff
The grand mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, took aim at US President Donald Trump in a fiery sermon on Friday, targeting the president’s peace plan in an address to around 90,000 worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.
Hussein used the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of the month-long Ramadan festival, to declare that Trump’s undisclosed plan is “unfair and aims to liquidate the Palestinian cause,” reported Times of Israel.
While Trump has characterized the agreement as the “ultimate deal,” the Palestinians have repeatedly denounced the plan sight unseen.
Next week, White House special adviser Jared Kushner and US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt are slated to arrive in the region to discuss the plan’s rollout.
Its prospects look bleak, however, with the Palestinian Authority maintaining a moratorium on contact with Washington in an attempt to punish the US for moving its embassy in Israel to the capital, Jerusalem. Since that move’s announcement, the Palestinians have claimed the US is disqualified as a Mideast peace broker.

Did IDF overconfidence almost prevent discovery of Syrian nuclear program?
The initial refusal by the IDF’s upper echelon to listen to warnings from a parliamentary committee almost prevented the discovery of a Syrian nuclear plant, Israeli TV reported.
By: World Israel News Staff
Former IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon, former IDF intelligence chief Aharon Farkash and other high-ranking military officers initially rejected warnings received from politicians in 2004 about a possible Syrian nuclear weapons program because they thought they knew better, a report indicates.
According to a report by Hadashot TV’s Amit Segal, a Knesset sub-committee warned the IDF of Syria’s nuclear ambitions two years before the Mossad found clear-cut evidence that a reactor was being built there with North Korean help.
However, the IDF initially belittled the politicians, claiming they were out of their element, the report claims.
Farkash said in response that he does not remember the incidents as presented by Hadashot TV. Ya’alon declined to comment.
In March, Israel officially confirmed it was responsible for a September 6, 2007 airstrike, dubbed Operation “Outside the Box,” that blew up the al-Kibar nuclear site near Deir Ezzor, ending a 10-and-a-half-year policy of silence about the operation.
According to officials, Israeli spies received definitive proof of the reactor’s existence in mid-2006, when it was well underway, in what was described as a major intelligence failure.

The UN General Assembly rejected a US proposal to condemn Hamas and accepted a Palestinian initiative to censure Israel for its actions defending its border with Gaza in recent months.
By: World Israel News Staff
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Wednesday rejected a US motion against Hamas, but affirmed a Palestinian-led initiative against Israel that condemned the Jewish state for the actions it took to prevent thousands of Gazans from overrunning its border fence.
The UNGA also criticized Israel’s counter-terror and policing actions against Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.
The American amendment condemning Hamas was struck down, even though it had a slim majority, 62-58, and 42 abstentions.
UNGA President Miroslav Lajčák of Slovakia ruled that a two-thirds majority was needed for an amendment to be added to a draft resolution.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Israeli government won big in Berlin Wednesday when the German parliament’s budgetary committee approved its army’s plan to lease IAI’s newest Heron-TP surveillance drones for nine years – until a European drone is ready for the market.
According to the €1 billion (USD1.18 billion) deal for the unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, the IAI and Defense Ministry will provide training, logistics and infrastructure as well as manage “all aspects of the project, including operational support and maintenance,” as noted by IAI in a statement.
About 100 German soldiers will be trained in the Herons’ use at the Tel Nof Air Force Base in Israel, which houses one of the IDF’s UAV squadrons. Some of them have already reportedly begun practicing with the medium-altitude, long-endurance aircraft.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said an agreement that would prevent conflict on the Israeli-Syrian border is being mulled.
By: World Israel News Staff
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Wednesday night that contacts among the Russians, the US and Israel are “ongoing” and that reaching a settlement along the Israeli-Syrian border is still possible.
In an interview with Iran’s Al Alam TV broadcast, Assad said the southwestern region, where Iranian-backed forces are near the border with Israel, is “not the international bazaar” and that the relationship between Syria and Iran “will not be part of any settlement.”
Assad said that after regime forces captured Ghouta in southern Syria from rebels in April, “it was suggested that we should move south.”
“We were faced with two options,” he continued, “reconciliation or liberation by force. At this point, the Russians suggested the possibility of giving reconciliation an opportunity.”
“Up till now, there are no concrete results for a simple reason, which is Israeli and American interference, as they put pressure on the terrorists in that area in order to prevent reaching any compromise or peaceful resolution,” he said.

The Internal Security Minister said that the IDF should order soldiers to shoot terrorists who fire rockets and those who fly incendiary kites into Israel.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan criticized the IDF Tuesday, saying they should allow soldiers to open fire on Palestinians who fly kites booby-trapped with fire bombs.
Hundreds of these incendiary kites have been flown into Israel from the Gaza Strip over the past few weeks that have burned down hundreds of acres of crops and forests.
In an interview on Israel Radio, Erdan noted that “it took the IDF a long time to realize that these kites are far from being a game, and even the burning of fields, which is extremely serious on its own, is enough justification to shoot in order to prevent the sending of the kites, let alone now that we know the kites are being equipped with explosives.”

Israel foils over 200 terror attacks by monitoring Facebook, TwitterPublic Security Minister Gilad Erdan (AP)
By patrolling social media, Israel’s law enforcers and security personnel have managed to catch Palestinian terrorists before they could carry out attacks.
By: AP and World Israel News
Israeli authorities have foiled over 200 Palestinian attacks by monitoring social media and sifting through vast amounts of data to identify prospective assailants ahead of time, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said in an interview Tuesday.
These pre-emptive actions put Israel at the forefront of an increasingly popular — and controversial — trend used by intelligence and law enforcement agencies around the world that use big data technology to track would-be criminals.
While the technology appears to be effective, its tactics drew angry Palestinian condemnation and have raised questions about civil liberties.
Erdan, who oversees the national police force, said Israel’s technology, including the use of algorithms, has been an important factor in lowering the number of knife and shooting attacks in Israel in recent years. His plan includes sharing Israel’s knowledge with counterparts at an international security conference he is hosting that began Tuesday.
“The experience we now have, we can help other countries deal with this kind of terrorism,” he said, adding that working with allies “can lead us to a much better result in fighting lone wolf terrorists.”

“So if they get money for one purpose,” Giuliani said, “they just don’t use it for that purpose and they move it over to paying terrorists for killing Americans, because many of these terrorists have killed Americans as well as Israelis and citizens of other countries.”

Israel’s Arab citizens, who make up a fifth of the population, are involved in 95.2 percent of all shootings in the country, according to a report by Israeli news site Hadashot, based on police data.
Israel’s Arabs are also involved in 76 percent of all cases of illegal weapons possession.
Many of the crimes, it should  be noted, take place within their own communities, meaning Arab-on-Arab violence.

The IDF launched a massive surprise drill in the north of the country as tensions on the border with Syria run high.
By: World Israel News Staff
The IDF launched a massive surprise drill on Sunday in the Golan Heights as tensions on the border with Syria have increased dramatically.
An IDF spokesman announced that the drill will last several days, explosions will be heard and military traffic, including troops and hardware, will be visible.
The exercise also entails a broad call-up of IDF reserves.
The spokesman emphasized that the drill was planned ahead as part of the IDF’s annual training schedule. It is not a response to any specific event, he said.
The drill was launched as tensions on Israel’s border with Syria, adjacent to the Israeli Golan Heights, are the highest in decades.
Last month, Iran’s Quds forces launched a barrage of rockets at IDF bases on the Golan Heights in northern Israel, the first Iranian attack on Israeli soil in history.
Shortly after midnight, IDF defense systems identified approximately 20 rockets that the Iranian Quds forces had launched at IDF forward posts on the Golan Heights. The majority of the rockets missed their mark and fell in Syrian territory, while four were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

IDF forces employed riot control tactics on Saturday to control rioters along the Gaza border who ignited tires, rolling them in the soldiers’ direction, threw stones, and launched incendiary kites and balloons.
A hand grenade and a pipe bomb were also thrown at IDF forces, as well as a kite carrying explosives, which detonated in mid-air.
In total, around 20 fires were caused by firebomb-equipped kites and balloons from Gaza between Friday night and Saturday alone, reported Arutz 7. Affected communities included Kibbutz Nir Am, Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, and Sderot.
An Israeli soldier was wounded by a friendly fire bullet ricochet, and was evacuated to Soroka Medical Center with injuries to his neck and face.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 47 Palestinians were wounded by IDF bullet fire. Five were reported to be in serious condition.
On Thursday, IDF Jets dropped flyers on Gaza Thursday, warning citizens not to attempt to storm or damage the border fence on Friday, a designated by Hamas for rioting.

By: World Israel News Staff
Israeli aircraft on Saturday launched an attack on Gazans preparing incendiary balloons as part of the Hamas-led March of Return protests along the border with Israel.
Since March, Palestinians have sent kites and balloons with flaming materials into Israeli territory, setting hundreds of blazes that have destroyed Israeli fields and nature reserves to the tune of around NIS 5 million.
According to Israel Radio, one of the kites on Saturday carried an explosive device, which sappers detonated. The police subsequently isued a warning to the Israeli public not to approach downed kites or balloons.
“We view the use of incendiary balloons and kites very seriously and will continue to act to prevent their use,” announced the army after the “warning shot” was launched.

According to a Hebrew media source, the Iranian government distributed funds to the families of individuals killed during the violent, Hamas-led riots that began in March.
By: World Israel News Staff

A recent report by Israel’s Reshet Bet revealed that the families of Gazans killed during riots along the Israeli security border received $500 each from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The money was reportedly doled out by Hamas during a Ramadan “break fast” meal held on Thursday evening to honor families of “martyrs.”
A recent study analyzing the casualties revealed that the vast majority of those killed in the rioting were connected to Hamas or other terrorist organizations operating in the coastal enclave.
While the riots were presented as spontaneous, peaceful demonstrations under the “March of Return” banner, mounting evidence demonstrates they were in fact Hamas-orchestrated operations designed to provide civilian cover to military operatives attempting to breach Israel’s border.
For example, after a 22-year-old female medic was killed during the riots last week, a video surfaced in which she referred to herself as “human shield,” contradicting initial reports portraying her as an innocent healthcare worker.
Iran provides funding, weapons and training to Hamas, which designated Iran’s annual anti-Israel “Quds Day,” which falls on Friday, as a date for more rioting along the Gaza-Israel border.

In a meeting in China, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani raised the situation following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iranian deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at the start of his Saturday’s meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao, China, Rouhani hailed close ties between Russia and Iran. Iran has an observer status in the SCO, and Putin said that Moscow would support the full-fledged Iranian membership.
Rouhani said that the U.S. exit from the nuclear agreement with Iran warrants an “important and serious discussion between our two countries.”
Rouhani also hailed Russia-Iran cooperation in Syria, saying “our role in the region is quite significant.” Russia and Iran have staunchly backed Syrian President Bashar Assad, helping turn the tide of war in his favor.

Israel “must be ready for escalation” on the Gaza border said the outgoing head of the IDF Southern Command.
By: World Israel News Staff
Outgoing head of IDF Southern Command (Maj.-Gen.) Eyal Zamir said Wednesday that Israel “must be prepared for escalation” on the Gaza border, and needs to “draw conclusions and find a suitable solution for kite terrorism as well.”
“The threat is not over and we need to intensify the efforts,” Zamir said at a change-of-command ceremony at the Southern Command, reported Ynet.
“The terror pattern of operations on the Gaza border will be defeated with determination,” Maj. Gen. Zamir added. “If required, we will use our full force.”
He argued that “calm is primarily in the interest of the Strip’s residents, who are suffering under the Hamas rule.”
Zamir also had a message to “all of those elements trying to delegitimize us—we’ll continue operating, whether you like it or not.”
Also speaking at the ceremony, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said the army was “dealing with a wide variety of terror attacks” from the Gaza Strip, noting that the Israeli military “must find solutions to any kind of threat.”
Eisenkot went on to say that “some four years after Protective Edge, the mission hasn’t been completed. It will only be completed after the return of Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul for burial in Israel.”

“You’ve got to change the dynamic and put the pressure on them,” Giuliani said of the Palestinians’ aversion to peace talks with Israel.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani lauded President Donald Trump’s tough line that forced the North Korean leader to beg to reschedule a high-profile summit.
Trump had abruptly called off the meeting and appeared to suggest that similar tactics were required to force the Palestinians back to the negotiations table with Israel.
Speaking at the Globes capital market conference in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Giuliani said high-pressure tactics should be used with the Palestinian Authority (PA), whicg cut off ties with the US following Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“They have to be seeking peace. You’ve got to change the dynamic and put the pressure on them,” Giuliani said.
Of North Korea, Giuliani said that following Trump’s tough stance, “Kim Jong Un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it [the summit wit Trump], which is exactly the position you want to put him in.”

Obama secretly sought to give Iran access to US financial system

Obama secretly sought to give Iran access to US financial systemFormer US President Barack Obama (L) and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (AP)
The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access — albeit briefly — to the US financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so.
By: Josh Lederman and Matthew Lee, AP
An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the signing of the Iran nuclear deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deal’s opponents. Amid a tense political climate, Iran hawks in the US, Israel and elsewhere argued that the United States was giving far too much to Tehran and that the windfall would be used to fund extremism and other troubling Iranian activity.
The report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations revealed that under President Barack Obama, the Treasury Department issued a license in February 2016, never previously disclosed, that would have allowed Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman from Omani rials into euros by exchanging them first into US dollars. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the US financial system.

New plan pushed to quintuple Jewish population in Golan Heights

With Israeli sovereignty over its portions of the Golan Heights more solid than ever, the government wants to increase the Jewish population there fivefold.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Deputy Minister Michael Oren has a plan to quintuple the Jewish population in the Golan Heights, and on Wednesday his party head, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, came on board.
Syria’s disintegration has largely eliminated the possibility of Israel returning land in the Golan to the Assad regime, once considered a real option.
“The missed opportunity in the Golan is not only demographic but also a security danger,” Oren said.
“Iran is trying to replace the Sunni population near the border with Shi’ite forces to build a base in Syria and make the Golan a conflict zone with Israel. We must take advantage of this window of opportunity,” he added.

IDF: Killed Palestinian medic was ‘no angel of mercy’

“Do medics in other countries throw bombs and participate in riots and refer to themselves as human shields?” an IDF spokesperson said regarding the shooting death of a Palestinian nurse.

The IDF’s Arabic spokesperson commented on the death of a female Palestinian medic shot last Friday during the Hamas-led riots near the security fence at the Israel-Gaza border, saying she was “no angel of mercy.”
The IDF released a video showing her throwing a smoke grenade toward Israeli forces securing the border while wearing her medic uniform.
“Razan al-Najjar is not the angel of mercy Hamas propaganda is making her out to be,” the IDF’s Avichay Adraee tweeted Thursday, Times of Israel reported.
Adraee accompanied his tweet with a clip showing Najaar’s activities on several occasions during the recent Gaza border riots.
In one segment, she is seen giving a media interview in which she explicitly states her commitment to serve as “a human shield” for the Palestinian rioters.

Expecting a renewal of rioting on Friday along the Gaza border fence, IDF planes dropped leaflets warning Gaza’s residents not to test Israel’s resolve.
By: World Israel News Staff
IDF aircraft dropped leaflets, ahead of Friday’s planned protests, warning Gaza residents against approaching the border fence and attempts at sabotage and terrorism, according to the IDF spokesperson’s unit.
In the leaflets, distributed Thursday, the IDF called on Gazans to abstain from being pawns at the hands of Hamas. “For your own benefit, you are better off not taking part in the violent riots on the fence and not to cross the border.”
This week marks the 51st anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War. But for Palestinians it is a day of sadness.
The annual commemoration, known as “Naksa” in Arabic, or setback, is usually marked by rallies, protests and often confrontations between Palestinians and IDF troops in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.
Tuesday, which officially marked Naksa Day, came and went with few incidents.
Officials in Israel had feared the commemoration could see a return to violent protests on the Gaza border, though military officials now believe Gazans will wait until Friday, when major  protests have been held to mark Quds Day, the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

The American secretary of state reacted firmly to the Iranian threat to increase its uranium enrichment capacity.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a one-word message for the Islamic Republic on Thursday after the head of Iran’s atomic agency said it was preparing to create weapons-grade uranium: Don’t.
“We’re watching reports that Iran plans to increase its enrichment capacity,” the secretary of state tweeted. “We won’t allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. Iran is aware of our resolve.”
The war of words has steadily become more aggressive between the two countries after US President Donald Trump walked away from  the 2015 nuclear deal last month, restoring economic sanctions on Iran that will be enforced in the coming months.
Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, told reporters on Tuesday that if the nuclear agreement falls apart, despite the other signatories’ desire for it to continue, the new centrifuges would be ready “in the coming weeks and months.”

Senior Russian officials arrived in the Jewish State on Wednesday to discuss distancing Iranian forces from the Syrian-Israeli border.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A group of high-level Russian officials, including at least one senior intelligence officer, arrived in Israel Wednesday to continue a months-long dialogue on concerns regarding Iran’s presence in Syria, in addition to discussing the terror threat in the Middle East in general.
The delegation spoke with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and is expected to meet other defense officials and IDF officers as well during their visit. The most crucial topic under discussion is Israel’s demand to that Iran and its military proxies move at least 60-70 kilometers away from the border area.
The Russian visit follows hard on the heels of Liberman’s quick trip to Moscow last week to speak to his counterpart, Sergei Shoygu, on the same subject.

US envoy to media: ‘Keep your mouths shut’ on Israel’s response in Gaza
 June 4, 2018
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman slammed the news media, telling them to “keep your mouths shut” until they have a better solution to the violent rioting along the Gaza border fence.
By: World Israel News Staff
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said Monday that the media should either figure out a better way to deal with the border protests or stop its negative coverage of the Jewish state.
Addressing a media conference in Jerusalem, Friedman said that news outlets have been unfair in their coverage of the deadly protests on the Gaza border over the past few months.
He advised reporters to “keep your mouths shut” unless they know better than Israel how to deal with the demonstrations.
Some criticism of Israel may be legitimate, Friedman allowed, although journalists should have worked harder to find alternatives to Israel’s use of lethal force, which has left scores of Palestinians dead, before accusing the state of wrongdoing.

Ahead of a Knesset discussion Monday on the situation in the Gaza Strip, it emerged that Israel has allowed over 6,000 Gazans to enter Israel to receive medical care over the past four months.
Meirav Ben-Ari, a Member of Knesset from the Kulanu party, said that according to data provided to her by the IDF, over 5,000 Gaza residents were allowed through the Erez Crossing that separates southern Israel from Gaza in order to receive medical treatment in Israeli hospitals.
Nearly 1,000 more were permitted to enter Israel in order to reach the Palestinian-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria.
The Knesset discussion, taking place during a meeting of the Committee for the Advancement of Women, was originally slated to focus on Gaza women’s suffering. It was arranged by Aida Touma Sliman, a Knesset member from the Arab Joint List Party’s Hadash communist faction.

Netanyahu: Only two issues on agenda during trip to Europe, ‘Iran and Iran’

Netanyahu: Only two issues on agenda during trip to Europe, ‘Iran and Iran’Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Marc Israel Sellem/POOL)
“I will meet with three leaders and I will raise two issues there: Iran and Iran,” Netanyahu stated upon leaving for Europe.
By: World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left on Monday for a round of diplomatic meetings in Berlin, Paris and London with the future of the Iran nuclear deal in focus.
The Israeli premier will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday and British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday.
In London, Netanyahu will also hold discussions with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and members of Parliament.
Prior to boarding his flight, Netanyahu said he was “leaving on an important visit to Europe. I will meet with three leaders and I will raise two issues there: Iran and Iran.”
He stressed the necessity to “continue the pressure on Iran against its nuclear program.”
“I believe that this pressure should be increased. It could be that there is not full agreement on this at the moment but in my opinion, such an understanding will take shape,” he stated.
Another issue Netanyahu will raise with the European leaders is “blocking Iran’s aggression in the region, especially its attempts to establish a military presence against us in Syria and attack us from there.”
“On this issue I hope to form an agreed-upon policy,” he stated.

The Europeans have been struggling to salvage the nuclear deal since US President Donald Trump’s announcement last month that the US is withdrawing from the pact.
Israel is hoping that the American withdrawal will lead the European leaders to address the deal’s shortcomings, including “sunset” provisions that end restrictions on Iranian nuclear activities in less than a decade as well as permitting Iran to continue developing log-range missiles that could eventually deliver nuclear warheads to targets around the globe.
Netanyahu last week spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and American Secretary of State Pompeo about Iran’s military buildup in Syria.
Israel has long been concerned about the Iranian military buildup in Syria and views it as a severe threat to its security.
“These are meetings with three very important leaders in Europe. I think that it is a good thing that I have a very personal, close and very good connection with them. This is important for the State of Israel,” Netanyahu underscored.

IDF troops stationed on the border with Gaza on Monday stopped two terrorists who attempted to infiltrate Israeli territory while armed with an ax.
Identifying the infiltration attempt, IDF troops arrived at the scene and fired at the assailants, killing one of them. The other terrorist was wounded but managed to return to Gaza.
IDF forces scanned the area and searched for explosives the terrorists may have left behind.
Palestinian sources identified the dead terrorist as Ramzi Najjar of Khan Younis.
On Sunday night, IDF forces stationed near the border discovered an explosive device connected to a “Molotov kite” that flew in from the Strip. The explosive charge, found near Kerem Shalom, was safely dismantled.

A statement about stepped-up uranium enrichment by Iran’s supreme leader was “a sign of the hysteria and panic in the Iranian leadership,” says Israel’s defense minister.
By: World Israel News Staff
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said an announcement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that the Islamic Republic will increase its uranium enrichment is “a sign of the hysteria and panic in the Iranian leadership.”
Speaking at a conference of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Eilat on Tuesday, Liberman said that the new Iranian threat is “a response to [French car manufacturer] Peugeot’s announcement that it is suspending its activity in Tehran.”

The Israel Security Agency said a plot to assassinate the PM, orchestrated from Syria, also targeted Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency, said Tuesday that in recent weeks it thwarted a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A resident of a Palestinian refugee camp in east Jerusalem is among those in custody for his involvement in the plot, orchestrated from Syria, to harm Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, the Shin Bet said.
The security agency arrested Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, born in 1988, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp who holds an Israeli ID card and was previously imprisoned for terrorist offenses.

Israel in, China out for world’s largest naval exercise in Hawaii

The US Navy said it rescinded its invitation to China but for the first time invited Israel, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Brazil to participate in a huge naval exercise in Hawaii.
By: World Israel News Staff
China is out, but Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Israel are in for the first time in this summer’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercise in Hawaii.
The US Navy announced at the end of May that 26 nations, 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate in the biennial RIMPAC being held June 27 to Aug. 2, according to the American internet site Stars and Stripes.
The US rescinded its invitation to RIMPAC for China, which had participated in 2014 and 2016, bringing several ships and personnel.
China was uninvited due to its ongoing militarization of the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
This would mark the first time Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Israel have joined the drills, the Navy said.
The biennial RIMPAC multinational maritime event is led by the US 3rd fleet off the coast of Hawaii and southern California.
With the theme of RIMPAC 2018 being “Capable Adaptive Partners,” the drill will work to increase multinational cooperation and trust as well as enhance interoperability of troops

German politician: Nazi era a ‘speck of bird poop’ in German history
 June 3, 2018
“Hitler and the Nazis are just a speck of bird poop in more than 1,000 years of successful German history,” co-leader of Germany’s far-right AfD said.
By: AP
The co-leader of the far-right nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on Saturday dismissed the Nazi era as a “speck of bird poop” in German history, drawing swift condemnation from mainstream politicians and outrage on social media.
Alexander Gauland said Germans must take responsibility for 12 years of rule by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party, but argued that it’s only a small part of Germany’s history.
“We have a glorious history and it, dear friends, lasted longer than those blasted 12 years,” he told a gathering of the party’s youth movement, according to the dpa news agency.
“Hitler and the Nazis are just a speck of bird poop in more than 1,000 years of successful German history,” he said to applause.
The party, known by its German acronym AfD, became the third largest in Germany’s parliament after the 2017 election. It is also the largest opposition party.

New York City’s police said there will be bomb-sniffing dogs, sharpshooters on rooftops and radiation detection devices to protect the annual parade along Fifth Avenue.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
The New York City Police Department is taking no chances with a parade celebrating Israel’s 70th anniversary in light of tensions overseas.
Police say there were no specific threats against the parade that starts at 11 a.m. Sunday from 57th Street and proceeds up Fifth Avenue. But security will be tight, including more than 1,000 officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, sharpshooters on rooftops and radiation detection devices. Sanitation trucks filled with sand will block streets to prevent vehicle attacks.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison says the precautions are in response to threats of terrorism in Israel, the Middle East and around the world. Police also are bracing for anti-Israel demonstrations.
The parade marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel.

Eyeing Turkish elections, Israel delays Armenian genocide debate

Netanyahu delayed a ministerial debate on recognizing Turkey’s massacre of the Armenian people as a genocide in order to avoid aiding Islamists in Turkish elections.
By: World Israel News Staff
At the advice of the Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night delayed a ministerial debate on motions to officially recognize the Armenian genocide.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Netanyahu had accepted a recommendation to postpone debating legislation on recognizing the genocide until after the June 24 Turkish elections “because holding the debate on its original schedule might serve Erdogan in his campaign.”
Recognition of the Armenian genocide is deeply unpopular in Turkey. the Ministry explained. If Israel were to take a stand in favor of recognizing the Armenian genocide, Erdogan would take advantage of it to criticize Israel.
Erdogan’s anti-Israel stance has already garnered support from large swathes of Turkey’s populace outside the large city centers who tend to be religious Muslims.
Israeli-Turkish relations are at a nadir
Relations between Israel and Turkey, which have worsened under Erdogan, soured dramatically in recent months.
US President Donald Trump’s decision in December to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was strongly opposed by Erdogan. He has compared Israel to the Nazi regime in the wake of recent clashes on the Israel-Gaza border in which dozens of Palestinians were killed trying to overrun Israel’s border fence.
The ambassadors and consuls general of both Israel and Turkey were expelled to their respective countries.
The Jewish state’s special role
Recognition of the Armenian genocide was raised by politicians on the Right in recent weeks in response to Turkey’s attacks on Israel.
Armenians have long sought international recognition for the 1915-1917 killings in the Ottoman era as genocide, which they say left some 1.5 million of their people dead.

High Court to decide fate of law seeking to legalize settlements
 June 3, 2018
High Court to decide fate of law seeking to legalize settlementsAmona outpost scheduled for demolition in 2016. (Flash90)
When passed last year, the law now in danger of being nullified was hailed by the Right as a way to legalize many communities in Judea and Samaria.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Israel’s High Court began a hearing Sunday on the Judea and Samaria Settlement Regulation Law which they had previous frozen, to determine whether it should be upheld or declared illegal
The law, passed in February 2017, aimed to legalize retroactively up to 4,000 housing units that were built on what was claimed to be private Palestinian land in what is known as Area C (under full  Israeli control) of Judea and Samaria.
This would prevent what has been the common practice of the court when Palestinians or left-wing organizations claim the settlements were built illegally on Palestinian property and petition for the destruction of the Israeli homes, even though the Jewish owners had been assured by government ministries and institutions that they had a right to be there.
The Regulations Law states that the Palestinian landowners would continue to own the property but their usage would be expropriated by the State. In return, they would be compensated at a rate of 125% of the worth of the property or receive alternative plots in a different location.
The Jews who built their homes “in good faith or at the state’s instruction” would be allowed to continue living there.
In order for the Palestinians to receive payment however, they would first have to prove their ownership of the land. This might be quite an obstacle to many – and it is an issue that the High Court has never dealt with.

Israel denies reaching deal with Russia on Iran presence in Syria

Israel denies reaching deal with Russia on Iran presence in SyriaPM Netanyahu (R) with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Iran must leave Syria completely, Israel maintains, denying any agreement with Russia to the contrary.
By: World Israel News Staff
Russia has stated that it reached an agreement with Israel on Iran’s military presence in Syria, while an Israeli diplomatic official denied the reports on Saturday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone Thursday on the situation in Syria.
The two leaders “discussed regional developments and the Iranian presence in Syria,” Netanyahu’s office stated. The Kremlin said the conversation focused on “some aspects of the Syrian settlement.”
The two met earlier this month in Moscow.
The phone call came as Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman was visiting Moscow for talks on the Iranian presence along Israel’s border with Syria.
Russia says Israel agreed on Iran’s withdrawal from the south of Syria, while Israel stresses that the Iranians must leave Syria completely and not only from the Golan Heights.
The Israeli official also underscored that Israel will continue to maintain its operational freedom to act against Iranian entrenchment in all of Syria, Israeli media reported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported Thursday that Iranian troops and Hezbollah terrorists are preparing to withdraw from southern Syria.
However, a Syria-based official with the Iran-led forces denied the report, saying it is “untrue.”
Russia wants to cut a deal, report says
Russian news outlets recently reported that Moscow wants to cut a deal that would see Russian military police deployed to areas near Israel.

About 500 Palestinians held in administrative detention in Israel are planning to go on a hunger strike next week.
By: World Israel News Staff
Around 500 Palestinians being held by Israel on suspicion of terrorist activity, but without a formal indictment leveled against them, are planning a hunger strike in protest next week.
Issa Karaka, the PA minister of prisoners’ affairs, told Voice of Palestine radio that the strike will be implemented in stages with increasing numbers of prisoners participating and will add to the ongoing administrative detainees’ protest which has so far involved boycotting Israeli courts.
Earlier this month, an Israeli guard working at Eshel Prison was hospitalized after a Hamas prisoner poured boiling water from a kettle over him.
Administrative detention allows Israel to detain people without charge or trial for renewable six-month periods. When their terms are renewed, detainees appear before Israeli military courts — often without full knowledge of the allegations against them.
It is used suspected terrorists — both Palestinian and Jewish.
Shin Bet and Israel Police use administrative detention against groups of Jewish teens and young adults known as hilltop youths, who live in unauthorized outposts in Judea and Samaria and are suspected of vandalism and violence against Palestinians.
Israel says the use of administrative detention is intended to allow authorities to hold dangerous suspects while continuing to gather evidence, in order to prevent attacks in the meantime.

Several thousand Jordanians have joined the largest protest yet against the government’s recent austerity measures, including price hikes and planned tax increases.
Riot police scuffled with demonstrators late Saturday and fired several tear gas volleys to keep them away from the prime minister’s office. Protesters chanted, “The people want to topple the government.”
Earlier Saturday, King Abdullah II met with the prime minister, Cabinet ministers and senior security officials. The state news agency Petra quoted the king as saying Jordan’s citizens shouldn’t have to bear the burden of financial reforms alone. Abdullah is the ultimate decision-maker, but public anger is typically directed at governments appointed by him.
International lenders have pushed for economic reforms to help reduce Jordan’s public debt, a result of a sluggish economy linked to regional turmoil.

Report: IDF bombs Gaza terror targets
 June 3, 2018
The Israeli Air Force bombed at least two terror targets in the southern Gaza Strip Saturday night following a day of intense clashes.

By: World Israel News Staff

Palestinian media is reporting that Israeli fighter jets bombed Hamas bases in southern Gaza late Saturday night.

The incident reportedly occurred several hours after two projectiles were fired into southern Israel – the first since a fragile ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hamas, although the violent border clashes had continued.

The Iron Dome anti-missile battery shot down one projectile and another fell inside the Strip, an IDF spokesperson said.

During the day, several hundred acres of land in proximity to the Gaza border – including a nature reserve adjacent to Kibbutz Carmia and farmland on Kibbutz Nir Am –suffered the worst fire terror attacks since the start of the violent, Hamas-orchestrated “March of Return.”

The terror was in response to the death of a Razan Najjar, a female Palestinian medic hit by IDF fire during while treating a Palestinian protester during violent clashes near the border fence.

By: World Israel News Staff
Israel’s Housing Ministry on Thursday published tenders for 1,162 homes to be built in Judea and Samaria.
The tenders are for 409 homes in the city of Ariel in Samaria; 459 homes in the city of Ma’ale Adumim, just south of Jerusalem in Judea; 250 homes in Elkana, Samaria; and 44 in Ma’ale Efraim, Samaria.
The Housing Ministry’s publishing of marketing tenders is a bureaucratic step that building projects in Judea and Samaria are required to take even after receiving “final validation” approval for construction by the Defense Ministry, the Times of Israel explained.
This announcement comes a day after Israel announced it was advancing plans for the construction of some 2,000 units at various locations throughout Judea and Samaria.
The region is home to almost a half a million Israelis.
The White House has so far chosen to refrain from criticizing Israel for its so-called “settlement expansion,” in sharp contrast to the previous administration.
Israel had refrained from construction and development in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria for several years for fear of blowback from former President Barack Obama and his administration, which repeatedly criticized Israeli “settlement” activity.

The White House chose Wednesday to emphasize Jerusalem’s willingness to cooperate with the Trump administration  after Israel announced the building of thousands of new housing units in Judea and Samaria.
“The Israeli government has made clear that going forward, its intent is to adopt a policy regarding settlement activity that takes the president’s concerns into consideration. The United States welcomes this,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council told The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post Wednesday.
“The president has made his position on new settlement activity clear, and we encourage all parties to continue to work toward peace,” the US official added.
Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has characterized Israeli construction in Judea and Samaria as “unhelpful” to the pursuit of peace. In his first month in office, he asked Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to hold back on construction approval.

Tamir Pardo said that in 2011 the prime minister nearly began a process that he was sure would lead to war.
By: Israel World News Staff
A former head of the Mossad spy agency said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israel’s military to prepare for an imminent strike on Iran, a move that could trigger a war.
Tamir Pardo, who revealed details of the events in a TV interview, said that he was faced with a dilemma: to carry out an order that he believed the premier was not authorized to make alone or resign.
In 2011, Netanyahu and then-defense minister Ehud Barak were concerned that the opportunity to hit Iran’s nuclear facilities was slipping away, Tamir related, as the sites would become so well-protected that any attempt to bomb them would be rendered ineffective.
The two men feared that Iran was close to producing nuclear weapons, a development it had long vowed to stymie.
Pardo said that Netanyahu instructed then-IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz to prepare the military so that it would be ready to carry out an attack on Iran within 15 days of being ordered into action.
That order, Pardo explained in a promo for the interview, carried enormous significance, leading him to contemplate resigning rather than participate in an attack.
Asked if a strike on Iran was tantamount to starting a war, Pardo said, “Certainly.”

Naftali Bennett rejected reports on Arab media of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire and said Iran was the head of the terrorist “octopus.”
By: World Israel News Staff
Education Minister Naftali Bennett said Wednesday that while Egypt was a moderating force in the ongoing Gaza conflict, no ceasefire has been achieved.
Bennett, who is also a member of the security cabinet, also blamed Iran for the recent escalation.
In response to a question from Army Radio about Israel’s relatively measured response to a barrage of mortar and rocket fire, Bennett said that Israel has to focus on the real culprit.
“Everything we have seen in the past 24 hours is the direct doing of Iran,” Bennett said. “They are trying to cause us to lose focus and forget about their presence in Syria. What is more important to take care of, the head of the octopus or one of its arms?”
Bennett, who spent the night in Kfar Gaza, a community adjacent to Gaza Strip, said there were no understandings with Hamas, neither formal nor informal.
“It could be that the other side is not interested in escalation,” said Bennett, adding that Israel will not be the ones to cause the situation to deteriorate.
Arab media sources quoted a high-ranking Hamas commander who announced at 4 a.m. that the different terrorist organizations operating in Gaza were obligated to adhere to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire as long as Israel honored it as well. An hour later rockets shot from Gaza hit a house in the Eshkol region adjacent to Gaza.
Bennett said that Israel would not allow Hamas to take advantage of so-called ceasefires to regroup and reinforce its troops as was the case in 2014 during Operation Protective Edge.
Bennett added that he and other members of the Education Ministry would be in the south providing support to families as they sent their children to school.

Barrage of mortars strikes southern Israel, kindergarten yard hit

Barrage of mortars strikes southern Israel, kindergarten yard hitTerrorists from Islamic Jihad's armed wing get training on firing home-made rockets from Gaza. (Wissam Nassar/Flash90)
A barrage of at least 25 rockets fired from Gaza fell on southern Israel early Monday. One mortar shell fell in the yard of a kindergarten.
By: World Israel News Staff
Over two dozen mortar shells were fired at Israel about 7 a.m. Tuesday by Islamic Jihad terrorists based in the Gaza Strip.
The Iron Dome anti-ballistic system intercepted mortar shells headed toward inhabited areas.
One man was slightly injured after shrapnel from one of the shells hit his hand.
The attack came as parents were beginning to send their children to school.
The volley of shells is being billed as the single-largest ballistic attack on Israel from Gaza since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge.
The Islamic Jihad threatened this week to respond to an IDF attack in Gaza in which three of its fighters were killed.
“We will not give up our duty to the dead, I know how we will respond to this serious escalation,” the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, Al-Quds Brigades, said. “The Zionist enemy can not dictate a new formula in which it will harm our people without a painful response.”
Sirens blared throughout Sha’ar Hanegev, Eshkol regions during at least two separate attacks from Gaza. The Iron Dome defense system intercepted most of the projectiles. Palestinian sources said that Israel retaliated with air and tank fire
At 8 a.m., exactly one hour after the approximately 25 mortar shells were fired at the Sha’ar Hanegev and Eshkol regions, incoming rocket alert sirens were triggered for a second time in the Eshkol region, the army said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, local government officials said.
One of the shells landed just outside an empty kindergarten in the Eshkol region, less than an hour before students were due to arrive, a spokesperson for the community said.
The kindergarten — along with all other schools — was set to open as usual, despite the attack.

Justice Minister: Option to invade Gaza is on the tableJustice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)
After biggest mortar barrage since 2014 Operation Protective Edge, the minister said that security and political officials were considering all options, including taking control of Gaza.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said Tuesday that security and political officials agreed “all options are on the table” with respect to the crisis in Gaza, including the possibility that Israel could re-occupy the coastal Strip.
Speaking to the Hebrew-Language Radio Darom, Shaked said it was a “miracle” that nobody was killed in a mortar strike on a kibbutz adjacent to Gaza Tuesday morning, adding that had the incident included Israeli fatalities, it could have led to war.
“Our reaction must be very strong,” Shaked said, “as if (Israeli) blood had been spilled. All options are on the table. We must seize the opportunity of this miracle to respond strongly.
Shaked explained that during security consultations in recent days, political leaders and military officers have “seen eye-to-eye” on the need to respond forcefully to cross-border attacks. The only consideration for the officials has been to ensure they make the “right move at the right time,” she said.
“Should we comprehensively ‘defeat’ Hamas?  When you say that, it means bringing down the Hamas government, which would mean whatever it means.”
