The Palestinian president has called the U.S. ambassador to Israel a “son of a dog,” in an angry rant against the Trump administration.
In a speech Monday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas pre-emptively rejected an expected White House peace proposal.
He criticized the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the American plan to move its embassy to the city and the cutting off of hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the U.N. agency for Palestinian “refugees.”
He also condemned Ambassador David Friedman’s close ties with Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, describing him as a “son of a dog.”

Seven days after a roadside bomb nearly killed the Palestinian prime minister as he traveled to the Gaza Strip, Abbas stopped blaming Israel, pointing his finger instead at the Hamas terrorist group.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas spoke out at a meeting Monday of the Palestinian leadership in Judea and Samaria, pointing definitively at Hamas as the perpetrators of an attempted assassination last week of PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.
“We are fully aware that Hamas is the one who stands behind that incident and carried it out,” Abbas said.
Last Tuesday, Hamdallah entered the northeastern Gaza Strip in a convoy of cars to inaugurate a wastewater treatment plant. A roadside bomb was detonated almost immediately, damaging the last three cars in the explosion and injuring several of their passengers. Hamdallah was not hurt in the incident.
The initial reaction from PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ office was that Hamas “bears full responsibility for this treasonous aggression,” a logical step considering that the terrorist organization holds the Strip in an iron grip. Later that day, however, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh talked to Hamdallah and according to Ha’aretz, they agreed that “Israel and its collaborators” were responsible for the attempt on the prime minister’s life.

Will consulate employee’s gun smuggling impact Israel-France relations?

Will consulate employee’s gun smuggling impact Israel-France relations?Romain Franck. (Shin Bet)
Analysts weigh in on whether the Shin Bet’s arrest of a French consulate worker for his role in a Palestinian arms smuggling cell will affect Israel-France relations.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
The Shin Bet security services arrest of a French consular driver with diplomatic privileges was a major embarrassment for France, but it will not cause it a diplomatic problem with Israel. Analysts closely watching developments say that early signs point toward Israel’s determination to put Roman Franck on trial because he lacks diplomatic immunity.
The Shin Bet says that the suspect “cynically exploited” his diplomatic privileges by smuggling more than 70 weapons from Gaza to Judea and Samaria. The Israeli Foreign Ministry on Monday termed the allegations “very serious” but insisted that the incident would not compromise diplomatic ties between the two countries.
International law expert Ambassador Alan Baker told World Israel News (WIN), “If he was a diplomat he would have full immunity. But as a consular staff member, who allegedly carried out a crime that was not connected to his work, he can be put on trial and imprisoned.

Adiel Kolman, a 32-year-old father of four, was stabbed and killed in the Old City of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Temple Mount, late Sunday afternoon.
Critically wounded in the chest and limbs, he was brought to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment.
“After being notified by United Hatzalah’s dispatch and Command center to the incident in the Old City, I arrived at the scene and found one person suffering from a stab wound in their upper chest. He was in serious condition. I treated him at the scene for his injuries following which he was transported from the location of the incident to the hospital for further care and observation,” said United Hatzalah volunteer first responder Dr. Yishai Ben Uri Zilbeger.

Once again, the EU displays a brazen hypocrisy towards Israel by applying the policy of “Do as we say, not as we do.”
By: Daniel Krygier, Political Analyst, World Israel News
The European Union (EU) recently criticized a new Israeli law that revokes Jerusalem residency permits for individuals involved in terrorism against the Jewish state. The new law, passed by the Knesset, enables the Israeli Ministry of Interior to deal with Hamas members residing in Arab communities within Jerusalem’s municipal borders.
The new Israeli law would, according to the EU, make the lives of Jerusalem-area Arabs “even more precarious than it already is today.” The EU conveniently ignores the fact that law-abiding Arab residents who are not involved in terrorism would have nothing to fear from the new law.
Once again, the EU displays brazen hypocrisy towards Israel by applying the policy of “Do as we say, not as we do.” The European Court of Justice has already ruled that EU member states can, under certain circumstances and on a case-by-case basis, revoke asylum status for migrants suspected of supporting terrorist groups. A case was brought up to the European top court in June 2015 after Germany accused a Turkish citizen of supporting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, also known as PKK.

The Israeli intelligence service tracked down and arrested the terrorist who killed a young father at the beginning of the year.
By: TPS
Abed Alkarim Adel Assi, the 19 year-old Arab-Israeli terrorist who murdered Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal outside of Ariel on February 5 was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after a weeks-long manhunt, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) said in a statement.
The Shin Bet said Adel Assi had been apprehended in the Palestinian city of Nablus in a joint operation involving the domestic security agency, Israeli Police special forces and the IDF.
Several other persons suspected of helping Adel Assi evade security forces were also arrested and taken in for questioning.
Adel Assi stabbed Ben-Gal, 29-year-old father of four, and a resident of the community of Har Bracha south of Nablus, in the chest at a bus stop outside of Ariel, fatally wounding him.
Adel Assi was born to a Palestinian father and an Arab-Israeli mother from Haifa, entitling him to Israeli citizenship. He is well known to Israeli welfare services, having spent much of his adolescence on the streets. In 2016, Assi arrived at Beit HaShanti, a shelter for youth at risk in Tel Aviv. He spent several weeks living on and off at the shelter, but eventually left following disagreements with staff over his frequent visits to his father in Nablus, where they believed he was being taken advantage of and radicalized by hostile elements.

After destroying two Hamas tunnels Saturday night, the IDF foiled the terror group’s efforts to renovate another tunnel leading into Israel.
By: Yona Schnitzer, TPS
The IDF has thwarted an attempt by Hamas to renovate a terror tunnel that the army had previously destroyed leading from Gaza into Israel in the early hours of Sunday morning, an IDF spokesman said Sunday.
As part of its effort to eradicate the terror tunnels coming out of Gaza, the IDF’s Engineering Corps, in an operation lead by the Southern Command, carried out the demolition. A further attack took place on Hamas’ underground infrastructure in the central Gaza Strip in response to several recent attacks on patrols along the border fence using improvised explosive devices, the army said.
“Systematically, while making use of quality intelligence and groundbreaking technology, Israel is destroying tunnel after tunnel. Whoever thought they would succeed in attacking us [from] underground, has run into an iron barrier,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said in a statement, “Hamas has invested billions in the tunnels project, and is now drowning in sand. I advise that Hamas invest its money in the wellbeing of the people of Gaza; by the end of the year, its tunnel project will have been eradicated.”

IDF adopts techniques for ‘mapping’ potential terrorists

The IDF is developing new ‘psychological profiling’ techniques for ‘mapping’ lone wolf terrorists.
By: The Algemeiner
The Israel Defense Forces is developing new sophisticated techniques, including extensive psychological profiling, in an effort to prevent “lone wolf” terror attacks, the Hebrew language daily Makor Rishon reported on Sunday.
According to the report, intelligence services in IDF Central Command have adopted a process of “mapping” potential terrorists. This allows the IDF to preempt possible attacks as well as capture terrorists who have already committed them.
A senior officer involved in the program told Makor Rishon, “In this work we search for direct connections to terror or attempts to create connections like this. An index system classifies who is likely to get involved in terror. Bottom line, we thwart dozens of attacks before they are carried out thanks to intelligence work and operational actions.”

By: Daniel Krygier, World Israel News
President Donald Trump’s firing of Rex Tillerson and appointment of CIA director Mike Pompeo as new US secretary of state is great news for Israel and bad news for Iran. Pompeo is a great admirer of Israel and a vocal opponent of diplomacy with the Iranian ayatollah regime.
A recent Gallup poll recorded the highest American support for Israel since the 1990s. While 75% of Americans today view Israel favorably, the US State Department has a long history of hostility towards the Jewish state and pro-Arab bias. Tillerson was part of this history, and the State Department disapproved of Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Hamas says it’s “closing in” on the culprits of this week’s assassination attempt on Palestinian PM Rami Hamdallah. Israeli anaylists say the most likely assassins are from within Hamas itself.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
The Hamas-run Gaza security forces have made a number of arrests following Tuesday morning’s attempted assassination of Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah. Those arrested include workers for two cellular phone companies, and officials claim they are close to solving the case. YNET reported that according to Palestinian sources, the attackers used phones from Palestinian cellular communications companies Wataniya Mobile and Jawwal to activate the explosive charges. The head of Hamas security, Tawfiq Abu Naim, says he already has the names of all involved. “The investigation is underway and we will publish findings when it is complete,” said Naim.
The explosive device was detonated Tuesday near the convoy of Hamdallah, who was visiting the Gaza Strip accompanied by Palestinian General Intelligence chief Majid Faraj. A second explosive device reportedly failed to explode for technical reasons. The charges were buried in the ground, weighed 15 kilograms each, and were placed 40 meters apart.

Diplomatic breakthrough as Israel and Arab states meet at White House

Diplomatic breakthrough as Israel and Arab states meet at White House(Shutterstock)
Despite the Palestinian Authority’s absence, the White House holds a conference on Gaza aid with Israel and leading Arab States in attendance.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Despite its White House venue, the significance of a “Gaza Aid” conference on Tuesday went largely under the radar, barely noticed in international media. Israel was in the midst of a now-resolved coalition crisis, leaving the gathering under-reported in Israel itself. The meeting was called by President Trump’s Middle East coordinator Jason Greenblatt, and attendees included top security officials from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Israel.
Also attending were officials from Egypt, Jordan, Canada and various European countries. The Palestinian Authority was invited, but chose not to attend because they are still boycotting anything related to the US after Trump’s Jerusalem declaration.
The event marked an unprecedented moment for Israeli diplomacy, as Jerusalem interacted with Arab states with which it has no diplomatic relations. The last time that Israeli and Arab officials were in the same room together in common purpose was at the Madrid Peace conference in 1991. This was the first time the White House ever hosted an event of this nature.

A former State Department Middle East negotiator with decades of experience does not “have a lot of confidence” in Trump’s proposed Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.
By: Benjamin Kerstein/The Algemeiner
A former US State Department Middle East negotiator expressed heavy skepticism on Monday that President Donald Trump’s reportedly soon-to-be unveiled Israeli-Palestinian peace plan will accomplish anything.
“I don’t have a lot of confidence [in it],” Aaron David Miller — currently a vice president at the Washington, DC-based Woodrow Wilson think tank who worked in the past for the State Department in both Republican and Democratic administrations — told The Algemeiner.
On Monday, the The New York Times revealed what it said were leaked details of Trump’s plan, reporting that it “will not call for a two-state solution as one of its goals. … Nor will it call for a ‘fair and just solution’ for Palestinian refugees.”
Miller downplayed the report, saying, “I worked on the peace process negotiations for 20 years. I’ve never seen a degree of radio silence imposed on any effort Republican or Democrat at any level like the degree of radio silence that’s imposed on this one.”

Will Pompeo take the US out of the Iran nuclear deal?

Iran is convinced the US will pull out of the nuclear agreement. Israeli analysts do not disagree.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Iranian officials are saying President Donald Trump’s dismissal of Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and his replacement by Mike Pompeo is proof that Washington is planning to quit the nuclear deal between Tehran and the Six World Powers.
In comments carried by Iranian state media, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said, “The United States is determined to leave the nuclear deal, and changes at the State Department were made with that goal in mind – or at least it was one of the reasons.”
Araqchi went on to warn, “If the US quits the nuclear deal, we will also quit it. We have told the Europeans that if they can’t keep the US in the deal, Iran will also leave it.”
Trump himself acknowledged that the reason behind Tillerson’s dismissal was his support for the 2015 nuclear deal. The president’s choice for replacement, Mike Pompeo, holds views on the nuclear deal that are much closer to those of Trump. Pompeo has spoken out against the agreement as a congressman as well as during his service as CIA chief.
In January, Trump extended a waiver on nuclear sanctions that were imposed on Iran but made clear that it was the last time he would do so. He also ordered European allies and Congress to work with him to fix “the disastrous flaws,” saying that otherwise, Washington will withdraw in May.

By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Up for re-election in less than two weeks, Egypt’s president on Thursday took center stage at a televised ceremony commemorating the country’s martyrs, declaring his readiness to personally join the war against Islamic terror.
“I swear by God that I am ready to don combat fatigues and fight side by side” with the security forces, said Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, a general-turned-president. “We either live together or die together,” he added.
Al-Sisi has yet to do any traditional campaigning for the March 26-28 election, such as addressing rallies or doing TV ads. With his win all but certain, he has apparently opted instead for televised appearances — Thursday’s ceremony lasted about five hours — in which he presides over official functions during which he addresses the nation.
With the outcome of the election a foregone conclusion — Al-Sisi’s only challenger is a little-known politician who supports him — he and his supporters have been tirelessly urging voters to come out and cast their ballots since a high turnout will accord the vote legitimacy.
In comments made Wednesday, he said he would rather win a third of the vote with a good turnout than every vote with a low turnout. A good turnout would contribute to Egypt’s stability and freedom, he said. Voting for Egyptian expatriates begins Friday.

The US slashed UNRWA funding in response to Palestinian anti-US positions, and the UN agency has so far failed to replace the funds.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A global conference asking donor countries to increase their aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is to take place in Rome on Thursday, co-hosted by Sweden, Egypt and Jordan. The Palestinian aid agency is facing an immediate crisis as the United States drastically decreased its funding from $360 million to $60 million this year, which is nearly 40% of the total UNRWA budget.
The Trump administration downsized its contribution due to its belief that there should be more equitable sharing of the aid burden with other countries, and that the organization needs to enact reforms. The president has also been angered by the rejection of the Palestinian Authority (PA) of his administration’s efforts in the peace process, saying in January in Davos that the US would only continue sending aid money if the Palestinians returned to the negotiating table.

Israel averted a political crisis, and Netanyahu’s government will continue to lead for the time being, although some coalition partners may still bolt the coalition.
By: World Israel News Staff
TPS contributed to this report.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday morning found a solution to a political crisis that threatened to bring down his government and take Israel to early elections.
Members of the coalition have been quarreling over whether to extend military draft exemptions afforded to ultra-Orthodox men. The ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism and Shas parties said they would not vote for the 2019 budget without the draft exemptions, while Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, a key secular partner, has vowed to bolt the coalition if the budget does not pass within the next few weeks.
Netanyahu agreed to extend the IDF draft exemptions. Yisrael Beiteinu said it will vote against the proposed solution, but Netanyahu still has the required 61 votes to pass the bill. Netanyahu, however, has said he prefers not to have such a narrow coalition.
On Monday morning, the Ministerial Committee on Legislation voted in favor of the bill, setting it on the path towards its first reading at the Knesset plenum and ultimately becoming law.
Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, however, is reported to oppose the bill because it does not meet legal requirements in its current wording, which aims for an annual quota for haredi enlistment in the IDF and national service at 3,800 people a year but does not spell out penalties or sanctions if the quotas are not me.
In addition, Orthodox parties want to expand the process for reviewing the quota system to every five years, up from the current standard of every year or two. Under current legislation, if the Haredi world fails to meet agreed-upon quotas, the draft exemption law could be voided and thousands of yeshiva (religious seminary) students could theoretically be drafted.
“The new draft of the ‘draft-dodging bill’ is an insult to the IDF and an insult to enlistees. According to this draft, the haredim will enlist if they want to. If they don’t want to, they won’t come. This is a national shame,” Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid party, stated on Facebook.
While legal experts say the law may have some flaws, coalition members have said they will iron out the issue, thus ensuring that all parties in question are satisfied.

Paraguay and Honduras will move their embassies to Jerusalem if  Netanyahu visits their countries.
By: JNS.org
Following on the heels of the US and Guatemala, Paraguay and Honduras have announced that they are ready “in principle” to relocate their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, according to IDF Radio.
The countries have conditioned their moves on an official visit to their countries by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu visited Latin America in September, but did not stop in Paraguay. During Netanyahu’s trip, President Horacio Cartes traveled to Buenos Aires to meet with the Israeli leader.
At the recent AIPAC Policy Conference, President Jimmy Morales announced that Guatemala would move its embassy to Jerusalem “two days after the United States moves its embassy,” tentatively scheduled for May 14.
In December, following the announcement that the United States would move its embassy and officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the UN General Assembly voted to condemn America’s announcement. The nine countries to vote against the condemnation were Israel, the US, Honduras, Guatemala, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. Paraguay was one of 35 countries to abstain, while another 21 did not participate in the vote.
President Milos Zeman has also expressed his desire to move the Czech Republic’s embassy to Jerusalem.

In a worrisome move, the administration is siding with the PLO in a lawsuit that aims to bring justice to American victims of Palestinian terror.
By: Jonathan S. Tobin, editor-in-chief, JNS
It turns out that in some cases, the Trump administration can behave just like its predecessors.
President Donald Trump has been rightly accused of smashing precedents as the commander-in-chief, and many of his subordinates have behaved, spoken and tweeted in ways unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Some of this unorthodox behavior is indeed troubling. But other decisions, including  his willingness to buck the foreign-policy establishment on issues like the status of Jerusalem and trying to hold the Palestinian Authority responsible for its support of terrorism, have been a long overdue breath of fresh air.

Palestinians reject US invitation to discuss Gaza humanitarian crisis

Palestinians reject US invitation to discuss Gaza humanitarian crisisSenior PLO official Ahmad Majdalani (Fars news)
The Palestinian leadership chose to resort to politicking instead of joining the US to address the dire situation in Gaza.
By: JNS.org
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has announced its intention to boycott an upcoming conference at the White House to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
Approximately two million Arabs live in the densely populated strip to the south of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline.  The strip, while not recognized as an independent state, is cutoff both from Israel and neighboring Egypt. Gazans receive funding from the Palestinian Authority, which does not control the strip. Several countries provide Gaza with relief aid, yet Hamas often diverts the funds to build terror infrastructure to attack Israel, including rockets and tunnels.
In recent months, the PA has withheld funding for electricity in Gaza. Hamas in turn has refused to use electricity to operate Gaza’s waste treatment facility. Yet the PA has laid blame for the crisis on Israel.
“The United States knows very well that the cause of the tragedy of the Gaza Strip is the unjust Israeli siege, and what is needed is political treatment of this issue,” said Ahmad Majdalani, an advisor to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s (PLO) executive committee member, on Voice of Palestine radio.
Majdalani accused the US of using the conference to “liquidate the Palestinian national project,” adding that the US had no real concern for the residents of Gaza.
The Palestinian leadership has refused to engage the US administration, since President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December.

UN hypocrisy: Pro-women’s rights and pro-Hamas?(UNRWA/Twitter)
If UNRWA is a champion of “gender equality,” how does it explain the fact that its staff filled with members of the misogynistic Hamas?
By: World Israel News Staff
UN Watch, a Geneva-based NGO that monitors the UN, slammed the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Twitter Sunday for its apparent hypocrisy on the issue of women’s rights, The Algemeiner reported.
“In 2017, over 80,000 Palestine refugee community members were engaged in awareness-raising on gender equality and Gender Based Violence through various UNRWA-run activities,” the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) tweeted on Sunday.
The tweet included a photo of a woman and two men, all smiling, with a map of “Palestine” on the wall covered with a woman’s image.
UN Watch responded on the social media platform: “If you care about ‘gender equality,’ why is your staff filled with members of the misogynistic Hamas? Also: If you support peace, why does your map in this photo erase Israel?”

Macedonia marks 75th anniversary of Jewish deportations in Holocaust

Macedonia marked seven and a half decades since the Nazis deported the country’s Jews to their deaths. Only two percent survived.
By: AP
Thousands of people marched in southern Macedonia on Sunday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the deportation and eventual death of almost the country’s entire Jewish population during the Holocaust.
Public officials, civic group representatives and relatives of former Macedonian Jews who came from Israel, Latin America and the US participated in the event in Bitola and lay flowers and wreaths at a Menorah Jewish monument.
Macedonia was a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia when it was occupied by Germany during World War II and then turned over to the Nazis’ Bulgarian allies to run. More than 7,000 Jews from the cities of Skopje, Bitola and Stip were confined to ghettos in March 1943 before being deported to the Nazis’ Treblinka death camp in Poland. Ninety-eight percent of Macedonia’s Jews perished there. Bitola lost its entire Jewish community of 3,144.
The International March of the Living, the official name of the commemoration, started in front of the monument to deported Jews, with wailing sirens signaling the start. People joined in the march along the same route that Jews were forced to take 75 years ago to the train station, where they were jammed into freight cars for the trip to the death camp.

Poll shows early elections would strengthen Netanyahu and Likud

Poll shows early elections would strengthen Netanyahu and LikudPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Miriam Alster/Flash90)
The government coalition is still immersed in conflict, and early elections could still be in the offing as the prime minister, beleagured by corruption allegations, may seek public mandate to continue in office.
By Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Government ministers Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked of the Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) Party, Minister Aryeh Deri of the ultra-Orthodox Shas, Knesset member Moshe Gafni of the United Torah Judaism party and Attorney General Avichai Mendleblit huddled on Thursday to come up with a plan to prevent a government collapse ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s return on Friday from the US.
The coalition members say they want to head off early elections amid the bitter coalition fight over the state budget and a bill that would grant military service exemptions to ultra-Orthodox students.
Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, leader of the Kulanu party, is still threatening to quit his post if the 2019 budget is not passed before the start of the Knesset Passover break, due to begin at the end of next week. Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who heads Yisrael Beiteinu, insists that his party will not bend to the demands of his ultra-Orthodox coalition partners.
For his part, Netanyahu told reporters in Washington, “I want to come to an agreement that will enable the government to fulfill its term until November 2019, but at the present time I can’t say that this goal is achievable.”

‘Maybe they are not even Russians, but Ukrainians, Tatars or Jews, but with Russian citizenship, which should also be checked,’ Putin said regarding alleged Russian interference in the US election.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Russian President Vladimir Putin says he doesn’t care about alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election because the actions weren’t connected to his government.
In an interview with American broadcaster NBC News that aired Saturday, Putin also suggested that some of the 13 Russian nationals indicted by the US may not be ethnically Russian.
“Maybe they are not even Russians, but Ukrainians, Tatars or Jews, but with Russian citizenship, which should also be checked,” he said.
Putin responded brusquely when interviewer Megyn Kelly asked if he condoned the interference that was alleged in last month’s US indictment by special counsel Robert Mueller.
“It’s all the same to me. To me it absolutely makes no difference because they do not represent the government,” Putin answered, according to the Russian-language interview transcript posted Saturday by the Kremlin.

Netanyahu meets Saturday night with the leaders of Israel’s ultra-Orthodox parties in an effort to prevent collapse of the government.
By: Adina Katz, World Israel News
Amid the heated debate over the state budget and a bill that would grant IDF service exemptions to ultra-Orthodox students of Talmudic studies, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition partners are negotiating Saturday night in a last-ditch attempt to prevent early elections.
The prime minister reportedly told his coalition members that he wants his government to complete its full term in November 2019, and if not, elections should be held immediately.
The ultra-Orthodox Knesset members have threatened not to vote in favor of the budget if draft exemptions for their constituencies are not met to their satisfaction. Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon has said his Kulanu party will leave the coalition if the budget does not pass in the next few weeks.
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who heads Yisrael Beiteinu, insists that his party will not bend to the demands of his ultra-Orthodox coalition partners.
“In life, there are moments in which you have to go with what you believe and not what pays. This is that moment,” he stated.
“The bill being put together now is not a compromise, but a surrender to blackmail,” Liberman wrote on Twitter. “Whoever wants to surrender to blackmail, can surrender.
Speaking Wednesday at the Economic Club in Washington, he said, “If all parties in this coalition … agree that’s what we do, and if not, then we will go to elections now.”

In a dramatic turn of events, Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump are set to meet in May for talks on nuclear disarmament.
By: Foster Klug, AP
SOEUL, South Korea – North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump plan to meet in May for nuclear disarmament talks, a whiplash development that would put two leaders who’ve repeatedly insulted, threatened and dismissed each other in the same room, possibly in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
It would have been an unthinkable suggestion just a few months ago, when the insults were at their peak — Trump was a “senile dotard” and Kim was “Little Rocket Man” — and the North was snapping off regular weapons tests in a dogged march toward its goal of a viable nuclear arsenal that could threaten the US mainland.
Liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who some believe has maneuvered the two leaders to this position, reflected the hope and relief many there feel about the planned summit when he declared Friday that it will be a “historical milestone” that will put the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula “really on track.”

Amid rumors of Abbas’ deteriorating health, PLO appoints successor

Amid rumors of Abbas’ deteriorating health, PLO appoints successor  Senior Palestinian official Mahmoud al-Aloul. (Arab Media)
Preparing for Abbas’ demise, the PLO has elected an interim successor, who is expected to carry on his legacy.
By: World Israel News Staff
Amid rumors of the deteriorating health of Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas, the PLO Central Council announced earlier this week that in the event that Abbas could no longer carry out his duties, he would be replaced by his deputy, Mahmoud al-Aloul.
According to the decision, in the event of Abbas’ absence, al-Aloul will be appointed to the post for a period of three months until elections are held.
Al-Aloul, 68, the former governor of the PA’s Shechem (Nablus) district, was elected to the Fatah Central Committee in August 2009 and was appointed as Abbas’ deputy in February of last year.
Abbas’ ailing health has long been a source of speculation.
Last month, he underwent what his aides called “routine checkups” in a US hospital. Despite his aides claiming that the results were “positive and reassuring,” other sources have indicated that his health has suffered a “major setback” in recent weeks.

A teenage student at a southern Utah high school has been charged with bringing a homemade bomb to school after it was discovered in a backpack emitting smoke and prompted an evacuation, police said Tuesday.
The boy was arrested Monday night after Pine View High School in the city of St. George was evacuated for two hours that afternoon while the FBI and a bomb squad investigated. Police declined to identify the arrested teen or give his age.
Authorities said additional charges also are pending against the teen as a suspect in the raising of the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group’s flag on a pole at another Utah high school last month just after the Florida mass school shooting that was followed by numerous other threats to schools around the US.

By: World Israel News Staff
A bill that would slash funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA) according to the sum the PA pays out to convicted terrorists and their families was approved in its first reading by the Knesset plenum on Monday.
Fifty-two lawmakers supported the bill, introduced by Member of Knesset (MK) Elazar Stern, which would deduct welfare payments paid out by the PA to Palestinian prisoners and their relatives from tax revenues Israel transfers annually to the PA. Only 10 lawmakers voted against the legislation.
Israel collects an estimated $2.1 billion in tax revenues for the PA, in accordance with the 1994 Paris Protocol, which governs economic relations with the PA, including import taxes on goods passing through Israel to the Palestinians.

Cairo’s latest push against Islamic terrorists in the Sinai has meant two weeks of cellphone outages for residents of Israel.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Israeli residents in southern Israel, and especially those in the communities around the Gaza Strip, are angered and concerned about the prolonged cellphone outages they have been experiencing as a result of Egyptian efforts to fight terrorists in the Sinai Peninsula.
All cellphone providers have been affected, and on Wednesday, Gadi Yarkoni, head of the Eshkol Regional Council that borders Gaza, sent a warning letter threatening to sue if the problem isn’t fixed.
“Lack of response and failure to deal with the malfunction so far by the cellular companies and the Ministry of Communications shows scorn for the residents of the Gaza vicinity who are carrying on their daily routine under constant security threat,” the letter noted. “Disruptions in communications here in the area are life-threatening.”
The electronic warfare is reaching further than the Eshkol region, however.

It appears that elections could be held as early as June, if a motion to dissolve Israel’s parliament is tabled this week.
By: Tia Goldenberg, AP and World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held emergency negotiations with key coalition partners on Sunday in hopes of averting a crisis that has threatened to plunge the country into early elections.
The political tremor comes as the prime minister battles a slew of corruption allegations over accepting gifts from billionaire friends and claims that he unlawfully engineered favorable media coverage for himself and his family.
The country’s attorney general is currently examining whether to indict Netanyahu in two separate cases. But Netanyahu has seen his fortunes improve in recent polls, with his base appearing to rally behind him amid the mounting graft accusations. The long-serving Israeli leader could hope for a successful run in early elections as way to cement his political legitimacy in the face of the scandals.
Members of Netanyahu’s government have been quarreling over whether to extend military draft exemptions afforded to ultra-Orthodox men. His religious partners say they will not vote for the 2019 budget without the draft exemptions, while a key secular partner has vowed to bolt the coalition if the budget isn’t passed soon.

In an exclusive interview with World Israel News, Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich discusses the controversial Polish Holocaust law and the future of the Jewish community in Poland.
By Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Polish Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich has had a tough several weeks. The spiritual leader of a Jewish community literally ‘growing from the ashes’ was thrust into the middle of a major and nasty diplomatic battle between the governments of Israel and Poland. The new Polish ‘Holocaust Law’ made it illegal to publicly attribute the crimes of Nazi Germany to the Polish nation, also forbidding use of the term “Polish death camp” to describe the death camps where Jews and others were murdered in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.
Jewish and Israeli leaders as well as historians and Holocaust survivors have railed against the Polish law, insisting that many thousands of Poles murdered Jews during the Holocaust, without being forced to do so by the Nazi occupiers. They did so because of self-interest and deep-seated anti-Semitism.

In complete contradiction to the Oslo Accords, official Palestinian Authority (PA) television encourages viewers – especially children – to hate Jews and kill them if possible.
In words and sentiments that could be taken from blood libels of yore, infamous Nazi propaganda newspaper Der Sturmer or any modern white supremacist handbook, PA television hosts teach that Israel murders Arab children in cold blood, according to Palestinian Media Watch (PMW).
Walaa Al-Battat is one such expert at incitement, having hosted children’s shows in which she calls Israelis “barbarians” who “try to kill people for no reason.” Hosting a TV show on February 9th called Who is the Judge, which was translated by PMW, she said, “The ‘occupation government’ (the common PA euphemism for Israel), which claims it is democratic … has built itself on the bodies of children, and it still murders, imprisons, and tortures them with the most extreme types of torture.”

“You can say it will be good if we give [the Palestinians] a state … empirically it doesn’t work with what we see,” Netanyahu stated.
By: World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians “doesn’t work with what we see,” while stressing the key component of Israel’s security any such deal.
After his meeting at the White House with President Donald Trump and ahead of his address on Tuesday at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Conference, Netanyahu sat with several American reporters on Monday in the president’s official guest house and took questions.
When asked about Trump’s peace proposal, which has so far been shrouded in secrecy with regard to specifics, Netanyahu said he “did not see a draft” during his meeting with Trump and would not say whether he has seen a draft before, NPR reported.
When asked if he believed in the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Netanyahu said, “I haven’t named it. But I’ve defined it,” meaning that he did support such a solution, which specifics he defined in his 2009 speech at Bar Ilan University.

Netanyahu says Riyadh is allowing Air India to fly over Saudi territory in direct flights from Mumbai to Tel Aviv, notwithstanding the Kingdom’s denial last month.
By: World Israel News Staff
Speaking to reporters in Washington after meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saudi Arabia is permitting Air India to use its airspace for direct flights from Mumbai to Tel Aviv.
Reports from Israel last month indicated that Saudi Arabia had given its approval for Air India to use its airspace. This would save passengers over two hours of flying time, as opposed to the route that Israel’s airline, El Al, must take to avoid the Arab state, which still has no official diplomatic relations with Israel.
Neither the Saudis nor Air India has confirmed whether permission has been granted.

Almost half of Israel’s Arab minority doesn’t recognize the country’s right to exist, according to the University of Haifa’s Index of Arab-Jewish Relations for 2017, released on Wednesday.
By: TPS
The study found a sharp deterioration in the attitudes of Arab and Jews in Israel toward coexistence, but despite the negative findings most Jews and Arabs remained willing to maintain a joint society.
According to the poll, the number of Arabs who recognize Israel’s right to exist fell to 58.7% compared to 65.8% in 2015, while the acceptance rate among Arabs of Israel as a state with a Jewish majority plummeted from 60.3% in 2015 to 44.6%. The number of Arabs recognizing the legitimacy of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state dropped from 53.6% to 49.1%.
At the same time, the poll showed a worsening of Jewish attitudes toward the Arab minority. In 2015, 79.7% of Jews recognized the right of Arabs to live in the state as a minority with full civil rights, but in this year’s poll, the number dropped to 73.8%. The percentage of Jews recognizing the status of the Arabs as a minority with full civil rights in a Jewish and democratic state dropped from 74.9% to 68.1%, and the percentage of Jews who accept Arabs as full members of Israeli society declined from 69.5% to 61.1%.

Congressmen Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) led a bipartisan letter sent on Tuesday urging U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to enforce the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA, with respect to Qatar’s media outlet Al Jazeera.
“For years, Qatar has used its state-controlled propaganda arm, Al Jazeera, to incite violence, glorify terrorist killers as ‘martyrs’ and broadcast hateful, extremist content. But recent reports that the network’s operatives secretly filmed American nonprofit organizations in Washington show the urgent need for an investigation to determine whether Al Jazeera undertook ‘political activities’ in the U.S. and should register as a foreign agent,” said Gottheimer.

Charles (Chuck) Schumer, longtime senator of the state of New York, emphatically denied the Palestinian claim that border issues or Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria are the obstacles to peace in the Middle East in his speech Monday to the AIPAC conference in Washington, D.C.
Schumer’s address was short, but to the point, with comments such as: “Now, there are some who argue the settlements are the reason there’s not peace, but we all know what happened in Gaza. Israel voluntarily got rid of the settlements there, the Israeli soldiers dragged the settlers out of Netzarim, and three weeks later the Palestinians threw rockets into Sderot. It’s sure not the settlements that are the blockage to peace.”

Political tensions mount as IDF draft law threatens coalition’s stability

Is Israel facing early elections?
By: Yona Schnitzer/TPS and World Israel News Staff
A brewing coalition crisis appeared to deepen Monday morning when Member of Knesset Yaacov Litzman, head of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism political party, threatened to vote against the proposed 2019 budget if the government fails to pass a law that would exempt ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students from service in the IDF.
“If the draft law passes, there will be a budget, and if not, we will vote against the budget,” Litzman said in an interview with IDF Radio on Sunday.
Litzman said that the draft exemption was a cornerstone of the coalition agreement and that as a representative of Moezet Gdolei Hatorah – the supreme rabbinical policy-making council that dictates the UTJ party line  –  he had no choice but to make sure it was implemented. “I am a Member of Knesset (MK) on their behalf, I have to [follow their orders] down to the last comma,” Litzman said.

Netanyahu began his comments by placing Trump’s historic recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in the context of the Jewish people’s history. “The Jewish people have a long memory, so we remember the proclamation of Cyrus the Great, Persian king, 2,500 years ago, who proclaimed that the Jews exiled in Babylon could come back and build our temples in Jerusalem. We remember 100 years ago, Lord Balfour who issued the Balfour Declaration that recognized the rights of the Jewish people in our ancestral homeland,” recalled Netanyahu.

First lawsuit filed under controversial Polish ‘Holocaust law’(Bundesarchiv/Wikicommons)
A Polish organization filed a lawsuit against an Argentinian newspaper for using a photo of Polish soldiers to illustrate an article on the 1941 Jedwabne pogrom.
By: JNS.org and World Israel News Staff
A Polish campaign group has filed the first legal action under the new Polish “Holocaust Law” that criminalizes any suggestion that Poland took part in crimes against the Jewish people during the Holocaust.
The Polish League Against Defamation is suing Argentina’s Página/12 daily newspaper for using a photograph of Polish soldiers who fought against Communists after the war to illustrate an article on the Jedwabne pogrom of 1941, in which local Poles massacred at least 340 Jews.
“The combination of these two threads: information about the crime on Jews in Jedwabne during the German occupation and the presentation of fallen soldiers of the independence underground is manipulation, an act to the detriment of the Polish nation,” the organization said in a statement.
Página/12 claimed not to have received any legal notice, only learning of the suit through the media.

Have Netanyahu’s corruption cases finally caught up with him, and should Israel prepare for elections?
By: World Israel News Staff
Nir Hefetz, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s former media adviser and close confidant, has turned state witness in Case 4000, which focuses on Netanyahu himself.
After over two weeks of police grilling, Hefetz agreed to become a state witness and will supposedly relay all information he possesses related to corruption allegations leveled against his former boss.
Case 4000 includes accusations that Shaul Elovitch, former owner of Israeli telecommunications giant Bezeq and current owner of the Walla! News portal, pressured his CEO, Ilan Yeshua, to arrange positive coverage of Netanyahu on Walla! in exchange for the prime minister advancing regulations that would benefit Elovitch. The regulations are worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Bezeq, of which Elovitch was, until recently, a major shareholder.

Fiamma Nirenstein of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs says that Italy’s leading Five Star party supports boycotting Israel.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News, with additional reporting by AP
A rival pair of populist and stridently anti-European Union political forces surged in Italy’s election for Parliament, but without enough support to govern the country alone, projections showed early Monday. With the prospect of a hung Parliament looking increasingly likely, Italy faces a difficult path to the formation of a viable government. “Ungovernable Italy” headlined daily newspaper La Stampa as election results rolled in.
Speaking from Rome, former Italian parliamentarian Fiamma Nirenstein told World Israel News (WIN), “The anti-establishment Five Star party that finished first in the election is very dangerous for Israel because it is outspokenly pro-BDS and generally ignorant of any history or political balance. I expect that the right wing anti-migrant parties can band together to form a government.”

“Things that are going to be highly divisive, and that could be strong religious symbols, it could be the Star of David… it could be a swastika… these are the things we don’t want” on the field, England’s Football Association chief said.
By: AP
English Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn highlighted the Star of David among the symbols he believes breach soccer laws banning religious and political imagery, a reference that has drawn criticism from the country’s Jewish community.
The Jewish Leadership Council, which is led by a former FA executive, said Glenn’s comment was “offensive and inappropriate” and plans to complain to the sport’s national governing body.
The Star of David, a symbol of Judaism, features on the Israeli flag which appears on national team kits and is displayed in stadiums.
Glenn, a member of the International Football Association, mentioned the Star of David while seeking to explain to reporters why the other slogans, statements or images should still be banned from being displayed on any equipment in the game.

A Lebanese actor who was charged with spying for the Mossad was framed by a former Lebanese Internal Security Forces officer.
By: World Israel News Staff
A former Lebanese Internal Security Forces officer has falsified charges against a Lebanese actor arrested for spying for Israel, Arab media reported Saturday.
In November, Ziad Itani, a Lebanese actor and writer, was indicted on charges of collaborating with Israel and possessing drugs.
On Friday, Colonel Suzan El-Hajj, the former director of the cyber crimes bureau in the Lebanese army, was arrested as part of the investigation, Al Arabiya reported.
She was arrested for her alleged role in falsifying charges against Itani, having “used the services of a hacker to fake conversations, so as to accuse Ziad Itani of having had communications with an Israeli girl,” according to a source close to the case, Al Arabiya added.
Itani was accused of collaborating with an Israeli female spy to collect information about Lebanese politicians and journalists.
According to interrogation leaks, Itani has reportedly collaborated with a Mossad agent to gather information about political developments following Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation, and specifically about an ally of the prime minister.
Itani had reportedly admitted to the charges.

Ultra-Orthodox parties push for bill that would preserve military exemption for Yeshiva students.
By Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
United Torah Judaism (UTJ), Shas and Member of Knesset Betzalel Smotrich from Habayit HaYehudi are pushing hard for a proposed basic law that would enshrine Torah study as a supreme value in the State of Israel in order to protect the right of yeshiva students not to perform military service.
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s secular right-wing Yisrael Beyteinu party is threatening to break up the coalition over the bill.
The so-called ‘enlistment bill’ has been placed on the Knesset agenda, but it’s unclear when and if the legislation will be brought up for a vote.
Leading haredi (ultra-Orthodox) lawmaker Moshe Gafni has warned that his UTJ party would condition its support for the state budget on the coalition’s backing of the bill. Just as emphatically, Yisrael Beyteinu chairman Robert Ilatov demanded that the matter be shelved. To back up his statement, Ilatov warned that if the bill came to the floor, the entire five-member Yisraeli Beytienu party would vote against it, including Immigration Absorption Minister Sofa Landver, which would mean resigning from the government.

Authorities said a man shot himself in the head and died outside the White House on Saturday.
The District of Columbia Police Department said in a tweet that “adult male has been declared deceased. We are working to notify next of kin.” The man has not yet been identified.
That tweet comes about two hours after the Secret Service first reported that it was responding to reports of a self-inflicted shooting along the White House’s north fence.
“Secret Service personnel are responding to reports of a person who allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound along the north fence line of @WhiteHouse,” the Secret Service tweeted earlier.
The incident took place before President Donald Trump’s scheduled late afternoon return to the White House from Florida. The White House says it was aware of the situation and that Trump was briefed.
The Secret Service says there were no other reported injuries.

“Canada’s Conservatives led by Andrew Scheer will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital when we form the government in 2019,” the opposition party announced on its website.
By Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Canada’s opposition Conservative party announced that when they return to power, they plan to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move their embassy to the city. Currently, the Liberals, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are heading the government, and the next election is scheduled to take place in 2019. Trudeau has made it clear that as long as he is prime minister, the Canadian embassy will remain in Tel Aviv.
The Conservatives announced their Jerusalem policy with a post on the party website that reads: “Canada’s Conservatives recognize the obvious fact that Israel, like every other sovereign nation, has a right to determine where its capital is located.”
The statement went on to say: “Canada’s Conservatives led by Andrew Scheer will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital when we form the government in 2019. Israel is one of Canada’s strongest allies and a beacon of pluralism and democratic principles in a turbulent part of the world.”
This was not the first time the party had promised to move the embassy. Ahead of the national election in 1979, former Prime Minister Joe Clark vowed to move the embassy but reneged on his promise after coming to power.

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
After hosting a gathering in honor of convicted terrorist Rasmeah Odeh, the Verrekijker Center was abruptly closed down by the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam, the institution announced on Wednesday.
The fact that Odeh is a convicted Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist who was jailed for 10 years in Israel for her part in a 1969 bombing of a Jerusalem supermarket that killed two people was not the reason given for the action, however. Neither was her continued open virulent opposition to the Jewish state.
“The VU makes this drastic decision after a secret meeting took place in the Verrekijker Center on Tuesday evening, 27 February,” said the university in a statement. “The collective [in charge of the center] intentionally did not notify the VU, despite agreements made about this.”

Iran has built another military base outside of Damascus, complete with hangars used to store missiles capable of hitting all of Israel.
By: World Israel News Staff
Satellite images from the Israeli firm ImageSat International (ISI) obtained by Fox News show what is believed to be the new Iranian base in Syria operated by the Quds Force, the special operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran’s new base is located outside of Damascus, Syria’s capital, and houses missiles capable of hitting all of Israel, Fox News reported Tuesday, citing Western intelligence sources.
The IRGC is entrusted with Iran’s foreign espionage and sabotage activities.
The photos show two hangars, each roughly 30 yards by 20 yards, used to store short- and medium-range missiles, Fox News reported.
A base similar to the one revealed in these new satellite photos was built last year south of Damascus, before being destroyed in December, reportedly by Israeli surface-to-surface missiles.

A high-level Polish government delegation currently visiting Israel for emergency talks over recent legislation that criminalizes discussion of Polish collusion with Nazi Germany confirmed on Wednesday that the law itself is not a subject for negotiation.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Bartosz Cichocki, who is leading the delegation, said that there was “no such possibility in the Polish political system, and no such intention” when asked on Wednesday whether the controversial Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) Act signed into law this month would be repealed, the liberal Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported.
Cichocki’s comments in Israel followed an earlier statement from Marek Suski, the head of the Polish prime minister’s office, saying that the delegation was “not going to Israel to negotiate the content of the bill.”

Prince William to make first-ever official royal visit to Israel this summer

The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, will make an official trip to Israel, the first-ever by a member of the royal family, as part of a tour of the region this summer.
By: JNS.org
“The Duke of Cambridge will visit Israel, Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the Summer,” Kensington Palace‏ said on Twitter.
“The visit is at the request of Her Majesty’s Government and has been welcomed by the Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian authorities,” the statement added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the visit by William, who is second in line for the throne, would be “historic.”
“We welcome the announcement of Prince William’s visit to Israel. This is an historic visit, the first of its kind, and he will be welcomed here with great affection. I have instructed the Foreign Ministry Director General to coordinate the preparations for the visit to ensure its success.”
Similarly, President Reuven Rivlin, who has issued several invitations to the royal family to come to Israel, said he was “happy” to hear of their planned visit. “A very special guest, and a very special present for our 70th year of independence,” Rivlin said on Twitter.
Despite the United Kingdom being one of Israel’s top allies in Europe, the royal family has never made an official trip to Israel, which has long angered Israeli leaders, with reports suggesting the royals have wanted to avoid upsetting its Arab allies.
However, with Israel’s ties with the Arab world warming in recent years, the visit by William may be a sign that this may no longer be a concern.
Nevertheless, Prince Charles has visited Israel on unofficial trips, attending the funerals of both Shimon Peres in 2016 and Yitzhak Rabin in 1994. His father, Prince Philip, also visited Israel in 1994 to attend a ceremony commemorating his mother, Alice of Battenberg, who is buried on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives

US ambassador Nikki Haley criticized the UN for allowing Iran’s justice minister, a human rights violator, to assail the US at the UN Human Rights Council.
By: AP
Iran’s justice minister, a sanctioned human rights violator, unapologetically took the podium at the UN’s top human rights body Tuesday to berate US and Saudi policies, defying calls for him to stay away in a visit a top US diplomat said made a “mockery” of the body.
Justice Minister Alireza Avaei’s visit has been criticized because he’s faced EU sanctions for six years for his role in arbitrary arrests, denying prisoners’ rights, and increasing executions in Iran. Switzerland, which hosts a key UN office and the council, has also handed him economic sanctions — but not banned him from visiting.
UN Geneva spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci said Avaei did not face any UN sanctions.
That did not deter other critics of Avaei’s visit. He was on hand Tuesday for the council’s “high-level segment”, a highlight to its March session, which this year is bringing together nearly 100 dignitaries — including many ministers and a few heads of state.

Adalah (‘Justice’ in Arabic), a Palestinian “human rights” group based in Israel, says it “only helps the Palestinians who are suing the State of Israel.”
By: Judith Bergman, MIDA
The numerous foreign funded “human rights” organizations who operate in Israel do not actually care about human rights. In fact, recent events have shown that they do not seem to care about human beings as such, either. Instead, they are what most Israelis have always suspected them of being, namely political actors, who have organized themselves cleverly in benign sounding “rights” organizations in order to better pursue their nefarious agendas of destroying the state of Israel through “lawfare.”
Last summer, the Jerusalem District Court determined that the Palestinian Authority (PA) was responsible for the kidnapping, torture and murder of dozens of suspected Arab “collaborators” within Israel, several of them with Israeli citizenship, between 1995 and 2002. The court proceedings unveiled grueling testimonies of Arabs who had been subjected to the most heinous torture in the cellars of the PA’s detention centers.
The PA naturally denied all allegations, but the presiding judge ruled that the accumulation of evidence made it clear that the PA was guilty of severe torture, as well as murder. The torture included the so-called shabah position — widely used in PA prisons — in which the victim is hung from the ceiling for several hours and beaten all over his body.
According to the verdict, the torture also included electric shocks, the pouring of boiling plastic on the body, tearing out nails and breaking teeth, sterilization, sleep deprivation, food and drink deprivation, sexual assault and the rape of family members. The PA also asked doctors to worsen the conditions of the prisoners, such as injecting urine into the prisoners’ blood veins.
The verdict concluded that the PA is responsible for the torture and therefore liable for damages to the victims, whose lives it ruined. However, in order to realize the compensation, the victims need to provide medical evaluations of their conditions by medical experts, which is a very costly procedure.

By: AP
A former transit-agency police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison Friday after being convicted in a sting operation of attempting to help the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group.
Nicholas Young, 38, of Fairfax, Virginia, became the first law-enforcement officer in the country to be convicted of a terrorism offense when a federal jury found him guilty in December on charges including obstruction of justice and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist group.
Young had been a patrol officer in the D.C. region’s Metrorail system and was known as “Officer Friendly” at the Takoma Park station where he was assigned.
The Muslim convert had been under surveillance going back at least as far as 2010. He was friends with Zachary Chesser, another convert who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for trying to join the al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia and for making threats against the creators of the “South Park” cartoon series for episodes he deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

Why has there been an international uproar against Poland but virtual silence concerning similar Holocaust-related laws in other Eastern European states?
By: Daniel Krygier, Political Analyst, World Israel News
At the time of this writing, a Polish government delegation is set for talks in Israel concerning Poland’s recently drafted, controversial Holocaust law. The law has been criticized by Israel, the US and the EU for what is perceived as limiting free speech and research pertaining to atrocities committed by Poles against Jews during and after the Holocaust. However, several Eastern European states like Ukraine and Latvia have similar Holocaust-related legislation that has barely been noticed by Israel and the international community.
In fact, one could argue that the suggested Polish Holocaust-related legislation has been inspired by harsher nationalistic legislation in countries like Latvia and Lithuania. To a large degree, the Baltic states equate Nazi crimes with Communist crimes that are blamed on Jewish communists. The legislation in the Baltic states whitewashes anti-Jewish crimes committed by locals and presents Latvia and Lithuania as “pure victims.” In reality, mainly local anti-Semitic collaborators murdered entire Jewish populations in the Baltic countries.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman toured the Jewish part of Hebron on Tuesday along with top IDF brass. He singled out the army’s success in thwarting “20-30 terrorist attacks each week,” particularly in and around the city of Hebron.
Hebron contains the Cave of the Patriarchs, which is religiously significant to both Jews and Muslims. Palestinians regularly attempt to smuggle knives or guns in to launch attacks there, and it is guarded around the clock by the IDF.

Kushner’s White House security clearance downgradedWhite House senior adviser Jared Kushner (AP/Alex Brandon)
Will senior Trump adviser Jared Kushner’s efforts to broker a deal between Israelis and Palestinians be affected by the change?
President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner had his security clearance downgraded on Friday due to alleged efforts by foreign countries to influence him, according to a report in the Washington Post.
Kushner’s interim “top secret/sensitive compartmented information” clearance has been downgraded to “secret,” a White House official told the Post.
The report revealed that officials in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, China and Mexico discussed ways to utilize Kushner’s business ties and foreign-policy naiveté to their advantage, though it is unclear if any of them acted on their discussions.
Kushner’s contacts with foreign officials are currently under investigation by U.S. special counsel Robert Mueller, who has been probing Russia’s interference in the last presidential election since May 2017.

The UN Security Council is set to condemn Iran for its destabilizing actions in Yemen.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is expected to vote Monday on a British-drafted resolution that would condemn Iran for violating a UN arms embargo by providing missiles and drones to Shiite rebels in Yemen — and commit to future action against Tehran.
Kuwait’s UN Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president. He told reporters Saturday, “We are still working on the text, but the intention is to adopt it Monday morning.”
Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said this week he opposed the draft, saying it should be about renewing the work of experts monitoring sanctions against Yemen, not condemning Iran.
The experts said in a January report that they’d identified Iranian missile remnants and other equipment introduced into Yemen after the 2015 arms embargo that were fired into Saudi Arabia.
Addressing a press conference in December, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley provided “undeniable” evidence that Iran is violating international law by funneling missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The story of Purim comes alive in this animated telling of the events that occurred in ancient Persia, based on the Book of Esther, which Jews around the world read each year on the festive holiday.

The narrator, however, goes beyond the telling of the story and discusses the important message behind it.

Indeed, how would you draw the line between a coincidental series of events and a miracle from God?

Incredible Parallels Between the Purim Story and the Nazi Trials
There are uncanny parallels between the hanging of Haman’s 10 sons in the story of Purim and the hanging of 10 Nazis after the Nuremberg Trials for crimes against humanity.
The haunting connection between these two eras in Jewish history begins with a story from the Talmud in which it is explained that in the Purim story Haman’s daughter committed suicide and thus didn’t need to be hung. Similarly, following the Nuremberg Trials, Hermann Göring, a well known Nazi cross-dresser, also committed suicide and thus was not hung. In fact, Julius Streicher, the Nazi editor of the anti-Semitic Der Stürmer newspaper, even proclaimed before he was hung, “Purim Fest 1946.”
Indeed, given these facts, it appears as if there is merit to the claim that there is a connection between the Purim story and the Nuremberg Trials.

Secret Celebration: How Spanish Jews Kept Purim Under the Inquisition
Spanish Inquisition
A Jew being tortured during the Spanish Inquisition (myjewishlearning.com)
Despite merciless persecution, Jews found a way to observe Purim during the Spanish Inquisition.
In 1391, anti-Jewish massacres swept Spain, where Jews were given the choice of converting to Christianity or being murdered. Some 20,000 Spanish Jews became Christians during this time period and many more continued to convert throughout the 1400s under duress. However, many of these Jews who were converted under the sword continued to practice Judaism in secret. This greatly disturbed the Spaniards, who saw that many closet Jews continued to be part of the top echelons of Spanish society, like they had during the Golden Age of Muslim Spain.
Thus, in 1492 Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand expelled from their kingdom the Jews who continued to practice their faith. Previously, the Spanish Inquisition was established to hunt down Jews who continued to practice their faith in secret. In total, 165,000 Jews fled Spain, with 50,000 baptized and an additional 20,000 perishing while attempting to leave Spain in 1492. Meanwhile, 31,912 “heretics” were burned at the stake in Spain, with an additional 17,659 burnt in effigy. For secret Jews, known as Anusim, Conversos or Marranos, who lived under the yoke of the Inquisition and thus were in constant fear that they would be discovered, the Purim holiday had a special meaning since Queen Esther was also forced to practice Judaism in secret initially.
For the Anusim of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, Purim was not a festive day full of children making noise and adults consuming alcohol. If these Jews celebrated in this manner, they would be discovered by the Inquisition. Instead, the Anusim, whose very existence was always in peril, would fast for three days, just as Queen Esther fasted for three days when the Jews of Persia were threatened with annihilation.
Spanish Megillat Esther
Scroll of Esther with Spanish translation (ajudaica.com)
As a result, the Inquisition used the Fast of Esther as an indicator of Jews engaging in forbidden religious activity. Furthermore, a three day fast was not considered healthy. According to Gabriel de Granada, a 13-year-old boy interrogated by the Inquisition in Mexico in 1643, the women of his family would divide the three day fast between them. Some would fast on the first day, while others would fast on the second and third.

According to Arab media reports, the Trump administration’s peace plan includes a Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem designated as its capital.

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Quoting “knowledgeable Arab diplomatic sources” in Paris, the London-based Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported on Wednesday that the Trump administration’s coalescing peace plan could contain several major “carrots” for the Palestinians, while not ignoring Israel’s security needs.

Other elements may include Palestinians giving up the “right of return” and putting the Old City under an “international mandate.”

Recognizing a Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem as its capital is the biggest nod to Palestinian demands, according to the report.

The purported Trump  proposal, seemingly taken from former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert’s offer to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in 2008, would dilute Israeli jurisdiction over Jerusalem even further.

According to the report, smaller, outlying Jewish villages in Judea and Samaria would be “relocated,” while the Palestinian Authority’s security and administrative control of Areas A and B would be expanded.

The inducements for Israel reportedly include retaining military control of the Jordan valley as well as security control over Judea and Samaria, including its borders. Egypt would have security control over the Gaza Strip. In addition, all large villages and towns would stay part of Israel.

Another key Israeli demand is addressed as well: The Palestinians who fled Israel in 1948 and their descendants would have no “right of return” to Israel proper. They would stay in the countries they currently live in and receive monetary compensation.

According to the Saudi paper’s sources, the US would ask the international community to help establish the new country’s institutions by collecting the whopping sum of $40 billion. The money is not intended to “buy” Palestinian acceptance of the peace plan, the diplomats stressed.

The Americans would like to present the peace plan – which has no date of delivery as yet – in the framework of an international conference that would be held in one of the Arab capitals. In order for Israelis to be able to attend easily, this would have to be either Amman or Cairo, most likely the latter.

Early reaction to the purported plan in Israel was not favorable. Leaders of the Sovereignty Movement, a Judea and Samaria activist organization, referred to the plan as “a regional disaster.”

“Netanyahu must come to his senses and make it clear to his American partners in these discussions and to his friend President Trump that an Arab state in the heart of the Land of Israel would bring disaster upon the State of Israel and would totally undermine the security and economic stability in the entire region,” commented Sovereignty Movement heads Yehudit Katsover and Nadia Matar.

Do the Poles and Eastern Europeans suffer from ‘Holocaust envy’?
 February 27, 2018
Israeli Holocaust expert says that Eastern European countries want to equate their suffering with that of the Jews.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
Former Polish Prime Minister and current President of the EU Donald Tusk says that the new law denying Polish complicity in the Holocaust is ruining the country’s international standing.
Tusk is warning his country against what he called “anti-Semitic excesses” and says that “negative opinions toward Warsaw are “turning into a tsunami.” He told current Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki that “the situation is very serious, it negatively impacts Polish interests, the reputation of Poland and Poland’s standing in the world.”
As a result of the backlash, Poland reportedly plans to send a delegation to Israel to discuss the crisis, but no solution is in sight, and the bill is due to become law on March 1. The legislation prescribes prison time for using phrases such as “Polish death camps” to refer to the camps which Nazi Germany operated in occupied Poland during World War II.
‘Media is making things worse’
Polish Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich told World Israel News (WIN), “The media is making things worse. They are making claims and then the politicians react. For example, the Poles never said they would freeze the law but indicated they would not enforce it.

A German town has voted to keep ringing a church bell dedicated to Adolf Hitler, supposedly as a memorial to spark dialogue about violence and injustice.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
A small town in southwestern Germany has decided to keep a church bell dedicated to Adolf Hitler ringing, but as a memorial to spark dialogue about violence and injustice.
The dpa news agency reported Tuesday the Herxheim am Berg council voted 10-3 to preserve the bell, which carries the inscription “Everything for the Fatherland – Adolf Hitler” above a Nazi swastika, as a memorial in its Protestant church.
State church authorities had offered to fund replacing the bell, which were widespread during the Nazi era but mostly removed after the war.
But a study had concluded removing it would be akin to “fleeing from an appropriate culture of remembrance” and recommended either leaving it in place with an explanatory plaque, or putting it in a museum.
The “Hitler bell” debate has been raging for months.
In September, the town’s mayor resigned following outrage over comments he made suggesting that the Nazi period wasn’t all bad.
The mayor also sparked outrage by saying he was proud of the bell and quoting a 95-year-old resident who felt the period of Nazi rule had included “good things.”

Russia has deployed advanced warplanes to Syria, satellite images taken by Israeli firm Image Sat International proved over the weekend
The Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets were spotted stationed at the Khmeimim Air Base, a Syrian base operated by Russia southeast of the city of Latakia.
The Su-57 is a stealth, single-seat, twin-engine fighter jet. The fifth-generation warplane is the first aircraft in the Russian Air Force to use stealth technology.
The fighter reportedly has supercruise, stealth, supermaneuverability and advanced avionics to overcome prior-generation fighter aircraft as well as ground and maritime defenses. The aircraft is expected to have a service life of up to 35 years.
This poses the first confirmation that the state-of-the-art Russian jets are not only operational but in play in the civil war waged in Syria.
So far, both the Kremlin and the Russian Ministry of Defense have remained mum on the subject.

By: World Israel News Staff
Tamar Fogel and her two brothers Roi and Yishai, whose parents and three siblings were murdered in a shocking Palestinian terror attack in the Israeli community of Itamar, Samaria, seven years ago recently filed a law suit against the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the PLO for encouraging the terrorists and paying them salaries during their imprisonment.
Israel’s Yedioth Aharonoth reported Monday that the family, through a suit filed in the Jerusalem District Court, is suing the PA for NIS 400 million ($115 million) for inciting terrorism and supporting it through stipends paid to the terrorists.
“Even to this day, the terrorists are receiving inflated salaries from the Palestinian Authority, which is contrary to all logic and justice. In filing this suit, we seek to send a message in the name of anyone with a human heart,” the Fogel family said in the suit.
Two Palestinians, Hakim Awad and Amjad Awad, armed with knives broke into the Fogel family home in Itamar as they slept on Friday night. They butchered the mother Ruth, 35, father Udi, 36, and three of their children, Yoav, 11, Elad, 4, and three-month-old Hadas, as she slept in her crib. Tamar was out with her youth group during the attack.

The year 2017 witnessed the largest single-year increase on record in anti-Semitic incidents in the US, an ADL report shows.
By: World Israel News Staff
The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the US surged significantly in 2017 compared to 2016, according to new data released on Tuesday by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
In its latest “Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents,” the ADL said that the number of anti-Semitic incidents was nearly 60 percent higher in 2017 than 2016, the largest single-year increase on record and the second highest number reported since ADL started tracking incidents in 1979.
The ADL said the sharp rise was in part due to a significant increase in incidents in schools and on college campuses, which nearly doubled for the second year in a row.
A total of 1,986 anti-Semitic incidents was reported by the ADL across the US in 2017, including physical assaults, vandalism, and attacks on Jewish institutions.
This figure represents a 57 percent increase over the 1,267 incidents in 2016.
Every part of the country was affected, with an incident reported in all 50 states for the first time in at least a decade, the ADL noted.

The famous Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem will reopen Wednesday while a “professional team” works on resolving a tax dispute with Israeli and municipal officials.
By: World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat agreed to establish a professional team, led by Minister for Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi, to formulate a solution for the issue of municipal taxes on properties owned by churches that are not houses of worship, Netanyahu’s media adviser said in a statement Tuesday.
A triumvirate of Christian denominations in Jerusalem closed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday, protesting a demand by the Knesset for retroactive payment of delinquent taxes as well as City Hall’s plan to seize church properties and bank accounts in lieu of payment.
The team will negotiate with the representatives of the churches to resolve the issue.
According to the statement, negotiations are ongoing and all legislative activity on the matter will be suspended. The Church will reopen on Wednesday.
“Israel is proud to be the only country in the Middle East where Christians and believers of all faiths have full freedom of religion and worship. Israel is home to a flourishing Christian community and welcomes its Christian friends from all over the world,” the statement said.

Arabs slam US embassy move as ‘aggression,’ ‘crime’

Arabs slam US embassy move as ‘aggression,’ ‘crime’Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki (AP/Ivan Sekretarev)
The Palestinians and the Arab League threatened repercussions in response to the US plan to move its embassy to Jerusalem in May.
By: World Israel News Staff
The Arab world responded in anger to the news that the US embassy will be moved to Jerusalem this coming May, coinciding with Israel’s 70th Independence Day.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday condemned “in the strongest terms” the American announcement regarding acceleration of the embassy move, saying they considered it “a provocative aggression against the Palestinian people.”
The fact that it will take place in May, “when Palestinians mark 70 years for their dispersal and uprooting from their homeland,” is “offensive to the feelings of Arabs and Muslims, in addition to being a blatant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The decision “is a direct aggression against the Palestinian people and their just and legitimate national rights, while at the same time rewarding the occupation for its violations and crimes, especially as it coincides with the anniversary of the Nakba [‘catastrophe’ in Arabic, referring to Israel’s independence] that afflicted the Palestinian people and is still ongoing, and encouraging it to continue to destroy any chance for peace based on a two-state solution,” the statement continued.

A European Union (EU) leader has called on Poland to rein in its public surge of anti-Semitism, saying the situation “is very serious and directly affects Polish interests, the reputation of Poland and Poland’s standing in the world.”
European Council President Donald Tusk spoke to reporters on Friday following an informal meeting of the 27 heads of EU states, during which he was asked about “recent tensions” with Poland surrounding its new controversial bill that criminalizes the use of the term “Polish Holocaust.”
Tusk, himself a former Polish prime minister, said he discussed the issue with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He told the Polish leader that the “situation is very serious and directly affects Polish interests, the reputation of Poland and Poland’s standing in the world.”
Tusk said he had “only one piece of advice” – Poland must do everything to stop two waves of controversy, the wave of bad opinions about Poland which is “taking on the proportions of a tsunami,” and the wave of “very injudicious anti-Semitic excesses in statements been made in Poland.”

The Lawfare Project may take to court several internet giants over hosting and promoting anti-Semitic content.
By: World Israel News Staff
Yahoo, Google, and Twitter could face legal action for hosting content that promotes Holocaust denial and virulent anti-Semitism, says the legal think tank and civil rights litigation fund that is threatening to file suit.
Brooke Goldstein, Executive Director of The Lawfare Project, on Monday held a briefing on possible legal action in Spain against internet giants Yahoo, Google, and Twitter, for failing to address the proliferation of Holocaust denial websites and virulent anti-Semitic materials on their platforms.
“Unless Google, Yahoo, and Twitter take down the anti-Semitic content on their platforms, they will be taken to court in Spain, and elsewhere,” said Goldstein.
In the last week, The Lawfare Project has sent cease and desist letters to a number of search engines, including Google and Yahoo, with possible action planned against Twitter.
The letters state that if the platforms do not act decisively and quickly to take down the anti-Semitic and defamatory content, as defined by Spanish law, a lawsuit will be filed against them.

Israeli lawmakers seek to expand the so-called “Muezzin bill” by allowing police to confiscate violating mosques’ loudspeakers and to fine them NIS 10,000.
By: TPS
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan and Environmental Protection Minister Ze’ev Elkin will seek an expansion of the so-called “Muezzin bill,” aimed at limiting noise levels in residential areas, by allowing police to confiscate the loudspeakers at mosques who violate noise pollution statutes between 11pm and 7am and fining violators a minimum of NIS 10,000
The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, which announced last month that it would renew deliberations on the controversial proposal to place decibel limits on mosques’ use of loudspeakers to broadcast the traditional Muslim call to prayer, will now have to approve the additions.
The measure was ratified in an initial vote on the Knesset floor last March by a vote of 55-48 following a raucous session that was marred by repeated shouting matches between Arab MKs and right-wing supporters of the measure.

The wardrobe choice was only one of the gaffes throughout the week. More serious was an invitation to Jaspal Atwal – a Canada-based former member of a banned Sikh separatist group who had been convicted of trying to kill an Indian Cabinet minister in 1986 – to a party for Trudeau at Canada’s High Commission in New Delhi. Canada quickly withdrew the invitation once it was discovered.

The Foreign Ministry released for publication Tuesday that a 62-year-old Israeli citizen kidnapped by armed men four days ago in the suburbs of Abuja, Nigeria, has been released in good condition.
The man, who worked for an Israeli company in the African country, was taken after the kidnappers exchanged gunshots with his driver, eventually killing him and whisking away the hostage. It is unknown if the successful negotiations for his release included the paying of a ransom, and if so, what the amount was.
Israel’s ambassador to Nigeria, Guy Feldman, along with the CEO of the abductee’s company company and Nigerian officials, were all involved in the negotiations, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The Trump administration has confirmed that the US embassy will be moved to Jerusalem this coming May, coinciding with Israel’s 70th Independence Day.
“President Trump’s decision to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem on the coming Independence Day follows his historic declaration in December to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement issued by the Israeli Embassy in Washington on Friday.
“This decision will turn Israel’s 70th Independence Day into an even bigger celebration. Thank you President Trump for your leadership and friendship,” the Israeli leader stated.

Due to pressure from Israel, Poland is delaying implementation of the controversial new law prohibiting mention of Polish involvement in the Holocaust.
By: World Israel News Staff
A Polish delegation will arrive in Israel this week to try and reach a compromise on Poland’s controversial new Holocaust law.
Earlier this month, the Polish Senate approved a bill that prohibits any references to Polish involvement in the Holocaust. The bill prohibits describing Nazi death camps in Poland as Polish, and sets fines or a maximum three-year jail term as punishment.
Israelis across the political spectrum condemned the bill. Netanyahu rejected the bill as “baseless,” while Israeli President Reuven Rivlin slammed it as an attempt at “fake history.”
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since the bill’s passing. Israel also canceled plans to send National Service volunteers on a trip to Poland before Passover in reaction to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s statement last week that there were “Jewish perpetrators” of the Holocaust, which exacerbated the rift.
“The Polish Prime Minister’s remarks here in Munich are outrageous. There is a problem here of an inability to understand history and a lack of sensitivity to the tragedy of our people,” Netanyahu stated at the time

A media visit to Israel’s northern border wall with Lebanon to explore tensions between the two nations, results in a display of those very tensions.
What happens when you get too close to Israel's border with Lebanon?
Israel is currently constructing a concrete wall on its border with Lebanon, to replace an older and simpler fence. The barrier is meant to prevent Hezbollah infiltrations. The militant group dominates many of the villages which lie on the Lebanese side of the border, with some houses built right along the fence. Lebanon claims the construction is being conducted on its own territory, something Israel rejects. Some Israeli citizens, however, think the new wall could do more harm than good. The Trump administration is considering an offer from casino mogul and Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson to pay for at least part of a new US embassy in Jerusalem, four US officials told The Associated Press.
Lawyers at the State Department are looking into the legality of accepting private donations to cover some or all of the embassy costs, the officials said. The discussions are occurring as the administration plans a ribbon-cutting for a scaled-down, temporary embassy that will open in May — more than a year ahead of schedule.

Despite the constant threat of terror in Israel’s capital city, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has announced that “Jerusalem is one of the safest cities in the world.”
Supporting his claim, the mayor stated that the “murder rate in Jerusalem is only one per every 100,000 residents, which is far lower than most major cities.”
“We have zero misuse of guns,” Barkat said.
The statements were made to a delegation of American Jewish leaders in Israel with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Barkat raised the issue as American leaders grapple with controlling gun violence in cities and suburban areas.

The Knesset State Control Committee met on Monday to discuss the issue of African asylum seekers in Israel following a court ruling last week stating that Eritreans who came to the country to escape mandatory army service should receive refugee status.
While Yossi Edelstein, head of enforcement and foreign affairs for the Population Immigration and Borders Authority (PIBA), said the Interior Ministry was still studying the ruling, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely took a hard line, charging that south Tel Aviv is living under a “reign of terror from illegal migrants.”
“Every sovereign state has the right to deport illegal economic migrants when they arrive at their gates,” Hotovely stated. “They will be deported to very safe countries where there are governments that enable a very high standard of living.”
“They are receiving $3,500. It is a large sum of money, and they can do almost anything they want with it,” she added.

The Judicial Selection Committee breaks new ground in electing Chavi Toker as the first female judge from the ultra-Orthodox sector.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Chavi Toker, a senior deputy in the Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office, was elected Thursday as the first female justice from the ultra-Orthodox sector. She is to serve in the city’s Magistrate’s court.
Her selection was the fulfillment of a pledge made in January by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, when she was asked about the promotion of ultra-Orthodox women in public offices. “I see it as a unique challenge to appoint an ultra-Orthodox judge, and I intend to do so at the next [Judicial Selection] committee,” Shaked replied – and she kept her promise.
President Reuven Rivlin called Toker’s election “a happy day for her and for all of Israel,” according to the haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Kikar Shabbat website. “I am convinced that she will bring to the judge’s chair the skill and knowledge that she acquired with great effort alongside the values of Jewish law and Jewish tradition that she absorbed at her parents’ and in-laws’ homes,” Rivlin stated.
Toker, 41, is the daughter of Rabbi Rafael Volf of B’nei Brak, who was considered the right-hand man of Rabbi Menachem Shach, longtime leader of the hareidi world until his death in 2001. She is married to a lawyer as well, the son of the late dean of the well-known ultra-Orthodox Hebron Yeshiva in the capital.

Amnesty International’s 2017 report accuses Israel of “torture and other ill-treatment of detainees, including children,” and “unlawfully” killing Palestinian civilians,” all without context.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Amnesty International, the global organization devoted to human rights around the world, issued its annual report Thursday on 159 countries. Speaking sharply about abuses in various totalitarian countries, it also turned a hypercritical eye on Israel.
Mentioning the Jewish state 115 times, the report accused Israel of “torture and other ill-treatment of detainees, including children,” and “unlawfully” killing Palestinian civilians and detaining thousands,” all without context.
The defensive blockade of the Gaza Strip was labelled “illegal” and the cause of “a growing humanitarian crisis,” without the context of its necessity due to unceasing Hamas attempts to smuggle weapons and tunnel-building materials to use against Israel.
Even when the report mentioned Palestinian attacks, it downplayed the organized dimension of the terrorists’ actions, as it noted, “The attacks, mostly carried out by individuals unaffiliated to armed groups, killed 14 Israelis and one foreign national.”
The report then cited the number of people killed by government forces, but without acknowledging that almost all were terrorists who either attacked or planned attacks Israelis. “Israeli forces killed 76 Palestinians and one foreign national,” it stated, adding, “Some were unlawfully killed while posing no threat to life.”

A Palestinian terrorist who attacked IDF soldiers while they were operating in Jericho on Thursday was shot dead.
IDF troops were operating in the city of Jericho, under Palestinian control, to arrest a terrorism suspect when confronted by a violent Palestinian mob. At some point, the terrorist, armed with a metal pole, attacked the soldiers, who responded by shooting him at close range.
A search of his body revealed he was carrying a knife as well.
The soldiers evacuated the terrorist for medical treatment, but he died of his wounds shortly after.
Palestinian sources identified the assailant as Yasin Omar Saradeeh, 33. His family claims he was severely beaten after being detained, adding that he was in a good health before the incident.
Issa Qaraqe, head of the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) Detainees Commission, told Voice of Palestine that Saradeeh died from severe beating to the head, describing the incident as “a crime, execution and premeditated murder at the hands of occupation forces, which reflect the level of brutality and terrorism of the soldiers.”

By: World Israel News and AP
Sweden has granted citizenship to an Iranian scientist who was sentenced to death in the Islamic Republic for the crime of spying for Israel, sparking Tehran’s rage.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency says the foreign ministry has summoned Sweden’s ambassador over the Nordic country’s decision to grant citizenship to the researcher, Ahmad Reza Jalali.
Tuesday’s report says the ministry summoned Ambassador Helena Sangeland on Monday to protest the granting of citizenship to Jalali, calling the move “unconventional, question-posing and unfriendly.”
Iran does not recognize dual nationality.
Jalali, arrested in April 2016 as he was in the country for a visit, was shown on state TV in December confessing to providing information to Israel’s Mossad spy agency about Iranian military and nuclear scientists, including two who were assassinated in 2010.

By: World Israel News Staff
A couple from Khan Yunis, a city in the southern Gaza Strip, has named their newborn triplets “Jerusalem,” “Capital” and “Palestine” in protest of US President Donald Trump’s recognition in December of Jerusalem as capital of the State of Israel.
The official Palestinan Authority (PA) daily reported on the naming two weeks ago and quoted the father, Nidal Al-Saiqli, as saying he chose those names “to emphasize that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine,” Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik wrote on the Palestinian Media Watch website.
The triplets have a two-year-old sister named Dalal Mughrabi after a notorious female Palestinian terrorist. In 1978, Mughrabi was responsible for leading a group that carried out the most lethal attack in Israeli history, murdering of 37 citizens, including 12 children, and wounding more than 70.
“There is no limit to how far Palestinians are prepared to go to demonstrate their admiration for terrorists and express their Palestinian nationalism,” Marcus and Zilberdik commented.
Reporting earlier this month on the naming of the triplets, the Fatah Information and Culture Commission, under the leadership of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, called Mughrabi a “self-sacrificing fighter… who together with a group of self-sacrificing fighters from the Fatah Movement took part in an attack that led to the deaths of Israelis four decades ago.”

If there was a great divide between the positions of Israel and the Palestinians before yesterday’s meeting of the UN Security Council, it’s now grown to the size of the Grand Canyon. The heated session appeared to reinforce intractable divisions between the two sides with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas accusing Israel of acting like “a state above the law,” while calling for an international peace conference under the sponsorship of the United Nations (UN), not the US.
Abbas stood up and left immediately after he concluded his by-invitation address. Ambassador Danny Danon fired back, calling Abbas a coward who was “part of the problem” rather than part of the solution. “Once again he is running away,” Danon said. “He put his demands on the table and he left, and he is expecting the UN to deliver the results. It’s not going to work that way. The only way to achieve results is to have direct negotiations.”

You are the problem.”
“You just addressed the members of the Security Council and spoke of your commitments to peace. This is what you often do when speaking to international forums. But when you address your people, you convey a very different message,” Danon said, before continuing to cite examples of anti-Semitism and incitement to violence by the Palestinian leadership.

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
On Friday, the Israeli government gave the families of two terrorists their sons’ remains and allowed their burial, eliciting great public outcry among Israelis. It especially angered the Goldins, whose son Hadar was killed in Operation Protective Edge and whose body is still being held by Hamas in Gaza. They have been tireless in their efforts to prevent such turnovers until their son’s remains are returned, and on Sunday they petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the government from releasing any more bodies.
The basis of the petition is a government decision at a cabinet meeting in January 2017, stating that Israel will hold the bodies of those who “carried out a particularly exceptional terrorist incident” and “terrorist bodies belonging to Hamas.”

In a lightning push reminiscent of the pre-State “tower and stockade” settlements that were built overnight by Jewish pioneers, three dozen modular homes were brought to the newly created village of Amichai in the Binyamin region of Samaria on Wednesday to be set up over the next two days.
The first 300 residents of the village will be those whose Amona homes were destroyed by the state last February after the High Court of Justice ruled that they had been illegally built on private Palestinian land. Forty-two families were evicted in all. Many of them have been living in unsuitable conditions in the dormitories of a field school in nearby Ofra since that time.
The Amona residents had signed onto a deal offered by the government three months earlier, in December 2016, to evacuate their homes in exchange for new housing in Samaria. However, the plans for the new town were shelved for months, and the infrastructure work only began in June.
One of the former Amona residents took the long view of their struggle to settle the land.
“After a long battle, we see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said activist Avichai Boaron to the Jerusalem Post. Boaron led the campaign to save the original community.

Notwithstanding a string of graft allegations, Netanyahu and his Likud party still lead in polls and would return to office in snap elections.
By Steve Leibowitz and JNS/Israel Hayo
A poll conducted Monday by the Geocartographic Institute on behalf of Israel Hayom indicated that if general elections were held now, Likud would win 34 Knesset seats, an increase over the 30 it won in the 2015 election.
The poll also showed that Yesh Atid, under Yair Lapid, would secure 20 seats, compared to its current 11. This is down from the previous poll, which gave it 25. Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home) would win 14 seats, compared to eight in the current Knesset.
The Zionist Union, which currently has 24 seats, would drop to 12, and the Joint Arab List, with 13 seats, would likewise drop to 12. United Torah Judaism would increase from its current six seats to nine.

MOL organizers denounce new Polish law that outlaws linking Poland to Holocaust crimes, but the group still plans to send 12,000 Jewish youth to visit the Auschwitz death camp on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
By Steve Leibowitz
The International March of the Living has brought more than 250,000 people to visit Nazi concentration camps in Poland, and the group says it will not cancel its 2018 trip, despite its opposition to a new Polish law criminalizing use of the words “Polish concentration camps” and similar statements linking Poland to the heinous crimes against Jews in World War II.

Could Israeli-style gun laws prevent mass shootings in the US?

Following the latest US shooting rampage in Parkland, Florida, some want the US to consider the “Israeli model” for gun control.
By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News
The recent murderous rampage by a 19-year-old man in a Parkland High School in Florida struck close to home for many in Israel. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has a large Jewish population and five of the 17 fatalities were Jews. The outspoken Parkland police chief Scott Israel is the first Jewish sheriff ever elected to serve in Florida. In addition, in the wake of the massacre, voices have been heard in the US suggesting that America adopt Israeli gun safety policies.
Former Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee was in Israel at the time of the Parkland attack. He tweeted: “Just waking up in Israel to news of heartbreaking school shooting in FL …Reminded that Israel pretty much eliminated it by placing highly trained people strategically to spot the one common thread–not the weapon, but a person with intent. #PrayForParkland”
Huckabee is a regular visitor, and a very popular personality in Israel, but several local commentators took issue with his analysis, saying it isn’t tight security that protects Israel from mass shootings, but laws that carefully control who can own and carry a gun. Former Israeli Consul Alon Pinkas responded to Huckabee with a tweet saying, “No Governor, Israel NEVER had such a problem. We don’t worship guns, we don’t sell assault rifles to people, we don’t have a genius creation like the NRA, we don’t regard every bunch of guys a ‘well-regulated militia’ and we’re pretty much done fighting the British.”
One often hears comments by US visitors who are surprised to see IDF soldiers carrying M16 automatic rifles on the streets of Israel.

Jewish group calls on US to cut ties with Poland over Holocaust law

Jewish group calls on US to cut ties with Poland over Holocaust law(Screenshot)
After less than 24 hours, a US-based Jewish foundation wound down its “hugely successful” campaign to counter Poland’s controversial Holocaust law.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
A prominent American Jewish foundation launched a campaign calling on the US to cut all diplomatic ties with Poland over its passing of a controversial bill that criminalizes the use of the term “Polish Holocaust.”
The Ruderman Family Foundation, which launched the campaign, posted a video on Youtube which sparked outrage in Poland on Wednesday with its provocative use of the  term “Polish Holocaust” to protest the new Polish law.
In the video, men, women and children are seen saying “Polish Holocaust,” defiantly breaking Polish law.
Ridiculing the law, one of the people is seen standing in a bar holding a beverage while saying “I wonder if they have beer in Polish prison.”
A mother sitting on a sofa with two children is seen saying “I’ll miss them when I’m gone,” referencing her supposed pending imprisonment. An elderly man, possibly a Holocaust survivor, is seen saying, “No Polish prison scares me.”
The clip says that “after 3.5 million Jews were murdered in Poland, including hundreds of thousands of children, the Poles have passed a new law.”
“Repeal this disgraceful law now,” the foundation’s clip demanded.

Three Muslims are facing charges in the US over their illegal provision of drone parts to Hezbollah.
By: AP
A federal grand jury in Minnesota indicted three men on charges that they conspired to export drone parts and technology from the US to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon, authorities announced Friday.
The US Attorney’s office for Minnesota said two of the suspects — brothers Usama and Issam Hamade — are now in custody in South Africa, while the third, Samir “Tony” Berro, remains at large. All three are Lebanese citizens.
Usama “Prince Sam” Hamade also has South African citizenship, while Berro and Issam Hamade are also UK citizens.
The US considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization. The Shiite terror group has used drones at least since 2004. The indictment alleges the conspiracy operated from 2009 through December 2013. It says the equipment included electronics that can be used in drone guidance systems, one jet engine and 20 piston engines that can be used in drones, and a pair of digital video recording binoculars.
The updated indictment unsealed Friday was dated October 11, 2017, but the original was filed in 2015 and kept sealed to keep the investigation secret from the three men.
The brothers were arrested Tuesday in South Africa for extradition to the US to face trial in Minnesota, according to another prosecution filing Friday.
They appeared before a magistrate there and were ordered held pending another hearing Feb. 26. Usama Hamade is a South African resident. The filings don’t say where Issam Hamade lives, but said he would visit his brother in South Africa.

Syrian government forces shelled rebel-held Damascus suburbs, killing nearly 130 people in two days.
By: Associated Press
Intense Syrian government shelling and airstrikes on rebel-held Damascus suburbs killed nearly 130 people in two days, marking some of the deadliest bombardment of the rebellious region in three years, a monitoring group and paramedics said Tuesday.
Retaliatory shells rained down on Damascus, killing at least eight people and causing panic among residents of the Syrian capital, seat of President Bashar Assad’s power.
The violence in the capital and nearby areas came as scores of pro-government gunmen began entering the northern Kurdish enclave of Afrin. Turkish troops shelled the areas shortly after the fighters entered the area, forcing journalists to flee. Turkish state media reported the pro-government forces then fell back 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Afrin city.
The targeted suburbs — scattered across an area known as eastern Ghouta — have been subjected to weeks-long bombardment that has killed and wounded hundreds of people. Opposition activists say government forces have brought in more reinforcements in recent days, suggesting a major assault is imminent to recapture the area that is the last main rebel stronghold near Damascus.
The area that has been under tight siege since last year is home to some 400,000 people as well as thousands of insurgents belonging to different factions. The most powerful are the ultraconservative Army of Islam and Failaq al-Rahman with a small presence of al-Qaida-linked fighters.
Pulling the injured from the rubble
Videos from the eastern suburbs showed paramedics pulling out the injured from under the rubble while others are seen frantically digging through the debris in the dark, in search for survivors.
Monday’s bombardment that killed nearly 100 people saw the use of warplanes, helicopter gunships, missiles as well as artillery, in a major escalation of violence near President Bashar Assad’s seat of power.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was the deadliest days in eastern Ghouta since 2015, adding that 20 children and 15 women were among those killed.
The opposition-affiliated Syrian Civil Defense, also known as White Helmets, said the shelling and airstrikes killed 98 and that some people are still under the rubble. It said the dead included one of the rescue group’s members, Firas Jomaa.
Both the Observatory and the White Helmets reported more airstrikes and shelling on Tuesday in eastern Ghouta as rebels pounded Damascus with mortar shells. The White Helmets reported 15 deaths on Tuesday while the Observatory said 23 people were killed.
The Observatory said the “crazy shelling” appears to be paving the way for a wide ground offensive on eastern Ghouta. If captured by government forces it would be another major victory for Assad since the conflict began seven years ago.
Rebels retaliated by hitting some Damascus neighborhoods with mortar shells, killing eight persons, including three children, and wounding 15 people, according to the state news agency SANA. On Tuesday morning, Damascus residents reported shelling of areas in central Damascus.
“Shells are falling like rain. We are hiding in the corridor,” a Damascus resident told The Associated Press, asking that her name not be mentioned for her own safety. She spoke while hiding in the corridor of an office building.
‘A bloody day’
“It’s a bloody day,” said Abdelrahman Shahin, a 31-year-old resident of Damascus who was walking on the street when a shell landed on a nearby taxi, killing the driver and a passenger in front of his eyes.
“They both died,” he said, visibly shaken. “The driver was out for his livelihood, his family will be waiting for him,” he said.
Syrian state TV later reported live from the streets of Damascus to show what it called the people’s “steadfastness” despite the shelling. The TV reporter said residents expressed hope that the Syrian army would retake eastern Ghouta.
Army of Islam official Mohammed Alloush and Nasr al-Hariri, who heads the committee that represents the Syrian opposition, described what is happening in eastern Ghouta as a new “Holocaust” committed by the government and its backers Iran and Russia.
The U.N. envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura decried a recent upsurge in violence, expressing concerns that eastern Ghouta could fall victim to widespread bloodshed like that in northern Aleppo more than a year ago. Assad’s forces captured Aleppo in December 2016 in his biggest victory since the conflict began in March 2011.
“Bottom line: if we have learned something from Aleppo, (it’s) time to actually avoid all this,” de Mistura said.
The U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF, issued a one-page statement of protest against the killings and carried a headline, saying: “Do those inflicting the suffering still have words to justify their barbaric acts?”
The headline was followed by a blank space underneath. UNICEF said it issued this blank statement because “we no longer have the words to describe children’s suffering and our outrage.”
The International Committee of the Red Cross also issued a statement saying that “this cannot go on.” It added that “distressing reports” of dozens injured and killed every day in eastern Ghouta with “families trapped, with no safe place to hide from shelling. Dozens of mortars in Damascus cause civilian casualties and spread fear. We cannot let history repeat itself.”
“The humanitarian situation of civilians in East Ghouta is spiraling out of control,” said Panos Moumtzis, the U.N. regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis, in a statement late Monday.
“It’s imperative to end this senseless human suffering now. Such targeting of innocent civilians and infrastructure must stop now,” he said.
In northern Syria, Syrian state TV reported that Turkish troops shelled the entrance of the northern Kurdish enclave of Afrin shortly after scores of pro-government fighters entered the area. The TV showed shells falling in an area where journalists gathered Tuesday afternoon forcing some of them to flee the area.

While spouting lies about Israel and the Palestinians and making absurd historical revisions, Abbas called for an international peace conference by the middle of 2018 that will accept the “State of Palestine” as a full UN member with Jerusalem as its capital.
In his address to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of “acting as a state above the law” while calling for “an international peace conference by the middle of 2018 that will accept the “State of Palestine” as a full UN member” and make Jerusalem its capital.
“We are the descendants of the Canaanites that lived in the land 5,000 years ago and continued to live there to this day,” Abbas claimed, among other outrageous statements.
“A nation that invents its past has no future,” Education Minister Naftali Bennett tweeted in response. ““The ancestors of the Palestinians may have existed 5,000 years ago, but south of here, in the Arabian Peninsula. I recommend to [Abbas] to focus not on constructing an imaginary past but on creating a practical future.”
Abbas blamed the deadlock in peace talks on US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December as well as Israeli “permanent settlement colonization” in Judea and Samaria and what he described as Israel’s “disrespect” of Security Council resolutions.
He slammed Trump’s cuts in funding to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
The Palestinians have nothing against Jews or Judaism, he claimed. Rather, the problem is the “occupiers of Palestinian land.”
The Palestinian leader repeated his rejection of the traditional US role as broker of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, noting its failure to achieve an agreement over the years.
The Trump Administration is nevertheless working on a peace plan. A delegation was present at the UN Tuesday, including American Mideast envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt as well as US Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded on Tuesday evening to the PA head’s remarks, stating, “Abbas said nothing new. He continues to run away from peace and continues to pay terrorists and their families $347 million.”

Iran warned it will “level Tel Aviv to the ground” if Israel attacks the Islamic Republic and threatened Netanyahu personally.
By: World Israel News Staff
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council and former chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said the Islamic Republic will “level Tel Aviv to the ground” if Israel carries out an attack, Fars News Agency, Iran’s semi-official news site, reported.
The senior Iranian official made the statement Monday in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the Munich Security Conference the previous day, during which he warned that Israel will not hesitate to attack if threatened.
Waving a piece of a captured Iranian drone, the Israeli leader addressed Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, saying: “Mr. Zarif, do you recognize this? You should. It’s yours. You can take back with you a message to the tyrants of Tehran: Do not test Israel’s resolve.”
“Israel will not allow Iran’s regime to put a noose of terror around our neck,” he asserted. “We will act if necessary, not just against Iran’s proxies that are attacking us, but against Iran itself.”
On February 10, an Israeli Air Force (IAF) helicopter successfully intercepted an Iranian UAV that was launched from Syria and infiltrated Israel. The aircraft was identified by the Aerial Defense Systems early on and was under surveillance until the interception.
In response to the incursion, the IAF attacked the Iranian aircraft’s launch components in Syrian territory.
Later, also in response to the Iranian UAV launched at Israeli territory and intercepted by the IAF, Israeli aircraft bombed 12 targets in Syria, including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria.
Rezaei also threatened Netanyahu personally, saying that if Israel “carries out the slightest unwise move against Iran, we will level Tel Aviv to the ground and will not give any opportunity to Netanyahu to flee,” Fars reported.

By: AP and World Israel News Staff
The Islamic State (ISIS) terror group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on churchgoers in Russia’s Dagestan region.
Five people were killed and five wounded when a terrorist opened fire with a hunting rifle on people leaving a Sunday service at a Russian Orthodox church in the Dagestan city of Kizlyar.
The terrorist was shot and killed by security forces at the scene.
All those killed were women, the BBC reported. The wounded include a police officer and a national guardsman. Two are said to be in critical condition.
Authorities identified the terrorist as 22-year-old Khalil Khalilov, a local resident. His wife has been detained for questioning.
Police have not commented on the possible motive for the attack.
One of the dead victims was an award-winning doctor, Lyudmila Shcherbakova, who had more than 40 years’ experience working in Dagestan’s hospitals, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.
Russian RBK news outlet quoted an Orthodox Christian priest who recounted that the congregation had just finished mass and was beginning to leave the church when “a bearded man ran towards the church shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is greatest) and killed four people.”
A statement from the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group, posted Monday on an ISIS-affiliated website, claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying a Muslim fighter attacked “a Christian temple” in Kizlyar. The authenticity of the statement could not be confirmed, but the website is regularly used by ISIS for posting statements.

By: World Israel News Staff
Palestinian terrorists launched a rocket at southern Israel from the Gaza Strip on Sunday night, setting off the siren system in the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council and the city of Sderot, sending tens of thousands of residents running for cover.
The rocket fell in an open space, causing no injuries or damage.
In response, Israel Air Force (IAF) fighter jets targeted “underground infrastructure” in the southern Gaza,” the IDF stated.
“The IDF will continue to act in order to ensure the security of Israeli civilians. Hamas is responsible for everything happening in the Gaza Strip, above and below ground,” the IDF stated.
On Saturday night terrorists fired a rocket at Israel which hit a home.
This is the second night that the IAF bombed Hamas terror targets in Gaza.
On Saturday night, in response to an explosive charge that wounded four IDF soldiers on the border with Gaza earlier in the day, IAF fighters struck 18 Hamas military targets, including weapons manufacturing infrastructure.
No terror organization took responsibility for the attack, but the increase in rocket fire from the Strip over recent months has mostly been the work of an Islamic State (ISIS) affiliate operating out of Gaza.
The IDF believes that Hamas is enabling the rocket fire, launched by small terror groups, on orders from Iran, which is seeking to create friction in the area.
Over 40 rockets were fired over the past several weeks, close to the total number launched since Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014.

Israel thwarted a recent attempt by Islamic Jihad terrorists to assassinate Defense Minister Liberman.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israel’s combined security forces were recently successful in exposing and thwarting an assassination plot against Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman by an Islamic Jihad terror cell, the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency) revealed Sunday.
The six-member terror cell, exposed in recent weeks, operated in the Bethlehem area near Liberman’s residence in the Israeli community of Nokdim. The terrorists had planned to bomb his convoy and carry out shooting attacks against Israeli targets in the area.
The cell included Awad Mahmoud al-Askara, 25, of Bethlehem, who was incarcerated by Israel from 2015 to 2017 for plotting a terrorist attack.
Another leader, Muhammad Ali Ibrahim al-Askara, 32, has twice been imprisoned for planning attacks and preparing an explosive charge to use in an attack.
The two terrorists operated to secure explosives for the attack and approached terror elements in Gaza for financial support. After failing to receive the funding, they prepared a mock bomb – in order to prove their seriousness to the Gaza elements – which was uncovered during their arrests.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip attacked a Qatari official, who was visiting the enclave to announce a major grant to a local hospital.
By: World Israel News Staff
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip besieged Qatari ambassador and head of Qatar’s Gaza reconstruction committee, Mohammed Al-Emadi, after a press conference at Dar al-Shifa Hospital during which he announced the details of a forthcoming grant. The attackers forced Al-Emadi to flee, reportedly threatening his life, reported pan-Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat.
The melee ensued when a hospital cleaning worker asked Al-Emadi about unpaid salaries, a problem that spans five months.
Al-Emadi responded that only Palestinian Authority (PA) officials, and not Qataris, are authorized to discuss salaries, and that payment for such services falls under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.
According to sources that spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat, Emadi’s responses angered the workers who then assaulted him. Al-Emadi fled as the workers threw objects at him and tore pictures of the Emir of Qatar.
Officials of the Ministry of Health in Gaza had apparently ordered the cleaning workers to attend Al-Emadi’s press conference.
Two weeks ago, Al-Emadi pledged $9 million on Qatar’s behalf to reconstruction efforts in the enclave. While Qatar does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, Al-Emadi openly admitted, “When you want to do work in Gaza, you have to go through the Israelis. Without the help of Israel, nothing happens.
Al-Emadi at that time described his relationship with his Israeli counterpart, Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, as “good.”

Florida high school shooter espoused extreme racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views and openly expressed them on social media.
By: World Israel News Staff
Nikolas Cruz, who shot and killed 17 high school students in Florida on Wednesday, advocated racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic views, which he expressed on social media. He also displayed an obsession with violence and guns.
CNN reported Saturday that Cruz’s hateful remarks were posted on a private Instagram group, named “Murica (American flag emoji) (eagle emoji) great.” He wrote that he hated, “jews, ni**ers, immigrants.”
Cruz talked about killing Mexicans, keeping black people in chains and cutting their necks.
His remarks are several of hundreds of racist messages, racist memes and racist videos posted in the group, CNN reported.
Cruz said he hated black people simply because they were black, and he hated Jews because he believed they wanted to destroy the world.
After one member expressed hatred for gay people, Cruz said, “Shoot them in the back of head.”

The FBI is under attack for failing to act on tips that may have prevented the Florida high school massacre.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
The revelation that the FBI botched a potentially life-saving tip on the Florida school shooting suspect is a devastating blow to America’s top law enforcement agency.
The FBI received a tip last month that the suspect in the Florida school shooting had a “desire to kill,” had access to guns and could be plotting an attack. But the agency said Friday that agents failed to investigate.
The FBI’s acknowledgment that it mishandled the tip prompted a sharp rebuke from its boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and a call from Florida’s Republican Gov. Rick Scott for FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign.
First it was revealed that the FBI failed to delve into a YouTube comment posted by a “Nikolas Cruz” that said, “I’m going to be a professional school shooter.” The FBI said it could not determine who made it.
Then on Friday, the bureau said it had failed to act on a tip that Cruz had a “desire to kill people,” posting disturbing social media posts and has access to a gun.
