France froze the assets belonging to Iran’s Intelligence Ministry, which is tied to a foiled terror attack in the country.
By: AP
French authorities on Tuesday froze the assets of the interior security section of Iran’s Intelligence Ministry as well as those of two Iranians, one a diplomat who is a suspect in an alleged aborted bid to attack an Iranian exile group.
A joint statement by France’s interior, economy and foreign ministers made clear the move to freeze funds was linked to the allegedly aborted attempt to bomb the June 30 rally outside Paris by the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran, or MEK.
The move was “preventative, targeted and proportionate,” the statement said. It noted France’s determination to fight terrorism, especially on French soil.
“This act of an extreme gravity envisioned on our territory could not go without a response,” it said.

IAEA chief rejects Israel’s demand to inspect secret Iran nuclear site

IAEA Chief Yukiya Amano refused Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s call to inspect Iran’s secret atomic energy site.

By: World Israel News Staff

The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday rejected Israel’s demand to inspect a newly-exposed site in Iran related to its nuclear program, saying that “the Agency sends inspectors to sites and locations only when needed.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu challenged the IAEA at the United Nations General Assembly last week, revealing that Iran stored “massive amounts of equipment and materiel” in a Tehran neighborhood, information it had shared with the IAEA six weeks ago. The IAEA, however, failed to act, Netanyahu said.
“I have a message to the head of the IAEA, Mr. Yukiya Amano,” Netanyahu said. “I believe he wants to do the right thing. Well Mr. Amano, do the right thing. Go inspect this atomic warehouse. Immediately. Before the Iranians finish clearing it out.”

Netanyahu calls for a demilitarized Palestinian state

Palestinians should not be “citizens of Israel or subjects of Israel,” Netanyahu told NPR, advocating a Palestinian entity with “nearly all the powers [of sovereignty], but not the ones of security.”
By: JNS.org
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he does not want Palestinians to become Israeli citizens or subjects of Israel. This development comes a few days after the leader’s speech at the annual U.N. General Assembly.
“I don’t want them either as citizens of Israel or subjects of Israel,” Netanyahu said in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), which was scheduled to air on Monday.
“But I think  . . . we have a third model at the very least, which is what I’m talking about: basically, all the powers of sovereignty, or nearly all the powers, but not the ones of security,” he continued. “Look, in the Middle East, which is littered with failed states, that’s often the best you can do.”
Netanyahu added that the Palestinians should look no further than the entity they are under.
“They would have those rights in their own territory,” he said. “In other words, they have their own parliament, they have their own government, they have their own flag, they have their own anthem, they have their own tax system.”

While Bennett accused Liberman of countering Hamas with a “weak and leftist” policy, the defense minister referred to the right as “delirious, lunatic and messianic.”
By: TPS and World Israel News Staff
The Education and Defense ministers, Naftali Bennett and Avigdor Liberman, have been exchanging insults as of late, with the former accusing the defense apparatus of not taking a strong enough stance against threats emanating from Gaza, and the latter accusing Bennett of being irresponsible and messianic.
On Tuesday, Bennett claimed Liberman is pursuing a “leftist” policy with regard to the Gaza Strip.
“Liberman’s policy towards Hamas is weak and leftist,” said Bennett, adding that he is “dragging the whole government to the left.”
Liberman, however, had his own fighting words for Bennett.
“The Education Minister is not saying a single word about education, so it’s clear that he does not care – not about education or about defense,” Liberman said about Bennett.

HaMoked Center for the Defence of the Individual, a New Israel Fund-supported legal group, is assisting relatives of terrorist Fadi al-Qanbar, who murdered four Israeli soldiers in a truck-ramming attack in Jerusalem in January 2017.
The Jerusalem appeals court on Tuesday ruled that al-Kanaber’s relatives, who are not Israeli citizens, be deported. The family is also considered a security threat as some have ties to ISIS, according to state information.
“The family of the terrorist had no knowledge of [the terrorist’s] intention. They are innocent. The interior minister does not have the authority to revoke residency,” HaMoked representatives said at the hearing.

The UN agency was forced to evacuate 10 of its top officials from Gaza to Israel amid death threats from the agency’s employees.
By: World Israel News Staff
The Palestinians’ dedicated agency UNRWA assisted 10 international senior officials in their escape from the Gaza Strip to Israel on Monday based on credible threats to their safety.
Israeli media outlet Ynet reported that UNRWA took these steps after officials received death threats following announcements related to major layoffs necessitated by the Trump administration’s massive aid cuts, which slashed millions of dollars from the agency’s coffers and officially ended American support for the UN body.
The harassment reportedly was perpetrated by the agency’s own disgruntled employees, with the officials spirited out of Gaza via the Erez Crossing, despite the fact that it was officially closed due to the Sukkot holiday.
While UNRWA’s deputy head is still in Gaza, Ynet reported that multiple sources suggested further evacuations may be required.

The Palestinians and the Iran nuclear deal will be the focus of Merkel’s visit, which she reportedly threatened to cancel if an illegal Arab village is destroyed.
By: World Israel News Staff
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of her cabinet will arrive in Israel on Wednesday evening for a two-day visit in the country.
Merkel is slated to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. Netanyahu last met Merkel in Berlin in June. The chancellor visited the Jewish state in February 2014.
The Palestinian issue and the Iran nuclear deal, which Germany is struggling to salvage, will be the focus of their meetings.
According to IDF Radio, Merkel’s office informed Israel that if the illegal Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar is demolished before her arrival, she will cancel her visit. The German Embassy, however, denied the report, saying there was “never a doubt that the government to government consultations would take place.”

The Israel Security Agency revealed how Hamas uses Facebook to get new recruits, especially targeting college students in the fields of engineering and technology.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Israeli forces recently arrested three Hamas operatives in Judea and Samaria who were planning attacks after being recruited to the terrorist organization through social media, according to a report publicized by the Shabak (Israel Security Service, aka Shin Bet) in the Hebrew media Wednesday.
Issa Shalalda, 21, and Amar Masoud, 20, revealed during their interrogation that Hamas activists in the Gaza Strip had convinced them through Facebook to be active participants in the terrorist infrastructure the organization has been trying to build in Judea and Samaria. The two recruits, who are members of a Hamas student group at Birzeit University near Ramallah, told the investigators that they had undergone various kinds of military training to enable them to carry out attacks, in addition to aiding the organization in the transfer of terror funding to others.

The UN court said that Washington must remove any impediments to the export of humanitarian goods to Iran.
By: AP
The United Nations’ highest court on Wednesday ordered the United States to lift sanctions on Iran that affect imports of humanitarian goods and products and services linked to the safety of civil aviation.
The ruling by the International Court of Justice is legally binding, but it remains to be seen if the administration of President Donald Trump will comply.
Trump moved to restore tough US sanctions in May after withdrawing from Tehran’s nuclear accord with world powers. Iran challenged the sanctions in a case filed in July at the International Court of Justice.
In a preliminary ruling, the court said that Washington must “remove, by means of its choosing, any impediments arising from” the re-imposition of sanctions to the export to Iran of medicine and medical devices, food and agricultural commodities and spare parts and equipment necessary to ensure the safety of civil aviation.

A senior Israeli source commented that 15 kilograms of radioactive material has been transferred from the alleged secret nuclear warehouse Netanyahu revealed at the UN on Thursday.
By: World Israel News Staff
After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed at the UN on Thursday an Iranian site he maintains was used to store
nuclear materials, the Iranian regime is reportedly racing to conceal the materials and any evidence that the site ever existed.
According to a report in Times of Israel, a senior Israeli source claimed the Iranian regime is currently attempting to cover up the site, commenting that the Tehran is currently attempting to disperse the 15 kilograms of radioactive material to which Netanyahu referred in his UN speech.
The material was reportedly removed from the site at the beginning of August.
On Friday, Netanyahu elaborated on his UN revelations in statements to reporters, demanding that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) take action against a regime he says “deceiv[es] and cheat[s] the international community.” According to Netanyahu, “the Iranian plan” involves lying in wait for a “a crisis somewhere or other” to emerge, after which it will “break out … a nuclear arsenal.”

According to the head of the Palestinians’ U.N. agency, the Palestinian problem cannot be solved by eliminating UNRWA.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Facing a financial crisis after the United States cut funding, the head of the Palestinians’ U.N. agency (UNRWA) claims the Palestinian issue will persist whether there’s money or not to run the agency.
While UNRWA got some good news Wednesday with new pledges of $118 million, it remains $68 million in the hole this year. And in January it will face the problem of trying to find funding for next year’s budget of about $1.2 billion.
“Of course, we worry about it,” UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl said. “The key question for next year will be whether these countries that have shown themselves so generous in supporting us this year … are they prepared to sustain those contributions?”

“The president proves again that the US is on the right side of history,” Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said following Trump’s address to the General Assembly.
By: Adina Katz, World Israel News
In his address to the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, President Donald Trump repeated his determination to forge a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, reiterating that moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem advances that goal.
“I moved the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The United States is committed to a future of peace and stability in the region, including peace between the Israelis and Palestinians,” Trump stated.
“That aim is advanced, not harmed, by acknowledging the obvious facts,” he said.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon immediately praised Trump’s remarks.
“The president proves again that the US is on the right side of history. While standing on the side of Israel in the struggle for stability in the Middle East, the United States leads the United Nations into a new era that ends its obsession with Israel and pushes back against the Iranian regime,” Danon remarked.
Regarding Iran, Trump said the 2015 nuclear deal was a “windfall” for the Islamic Republic, whose leaders “sow chaos, death and destruction.”

Russia: We have proof IDF ‘distorts’ facts,’ responsible for downed plane

Russia’s defense ministry says it has evidence that the IDF report on the fatal Russian plane crash “distorts” the facts surrounding the incident and that Israel is to blame.
The Russian news agency TASS says it has data proving the Israel Air Force’s responsibility for the downing of a Russian plane last week that killed 15 servicemen.
Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Monday that the ministry “took notice of certain comments seeking to distort the picture of the incident and thoroughly scrutinized the IDF statement,” TASS reported, referring to the Israeli military’s insistence that the Israeli fighter jets had already left Syria at the time of the incident.
“Today, we will give additional data available to the Russian defense ministry to track the Israeli planes and the S-200 system’s missile literally second-by-second. These data were taken from the radars of the command and control post of the S-400 missile system deployed at the Hmeymim airbase,” Konashenkov said.

After Russia said it would sell Syria the advanced S-300 air defense system following the downing of a Russian plane in Syria, the US put Moscow on notice regarding what it calls a “significant escalation.”

The New York Times reports that the Trump administration called the sale a “major mistake,” with National Security Adviser John Bolton describing it as a “significant escalation.”

A report from the World Bank calls for urgent action from Israel and the global community to avoid the “immediate collapse” of the economy of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
By: AP and World Israel News
The Gaza Strip’s economy is in “free fall,” a report from the World Bank warned Tuesday, calling for urgent action by Israel and the international community to avoid “immediate collapse.”
According to the report, Gaza’s economy contracted by six percent in the first quarter of 2018. It said unemployment is now over 50 percent — and over 70 percent among Gaza’s youth.
The World Bank cited various factors, starting with Israel’s decade-long blockade against the territory’s terrorist Hamas rulers, for the precarious downturn. Egypt also enforced a blockade in response to the Islamic terror threat.
The report also cited budget cuts by the rival Palestinian Authority and a reduction in international aid to the Palestinians, particularly from the United States.

Gunmen disguised as soldiers attacked an annual Iranian military parade Saturday in the country’s oil-rich southwest, killing at least 29 people and wounding 60 in the bloodiest assault to strike the country in recent years.
By: AP
The attack in Ahvaz saw gunfire sprayed into a crowd of marching Revolutionary Guardsmen, bystanders and government officials watching from a nearby riser. Suspicion immediately fell on the region’s Arab separatists, who previously only attacked unguarded oil pipelines under the cover of darkness.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif immediately blamed the attack on regional countries and their “U.S. masters,” calling the gunmen “terrorists recruited, trained armed and paid” by foreign powers. That further raises tensions in the Mideast as Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers is in jeopardy after President Donald Trump withdrew America from the accord.

Various Iranian officials claimed Israel was responsible for a deadly attack on a military parade in Iran on Saturday.
By: World Israel News Staff
Gunmen disguised as soldiers opened fire at an annual Iranian military parade on Saturday, with the death toll reaching 29 in the bloodiest attack the Islamic Republic has seen in years.
The attack took place in Ahvaz, with the assailants apparently targeting Revolutionary Guardsmen.
While suspicion immediately fell on the Arab separatists in the region, who have mounted previous attacks, several top Iranian officials also pointed fingers at Israel and the United States.
Almost immediately, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blamed regional rivals and their “U.S. masters,” which was interpreted as a reference to Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Echoing Zarif’s comments, an Iranian army spokesman also fingered Israel and the US, without citing any support for his accusations.
Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told Iran’s official news agency IRNA that the gunmen were “not from [the Islamic State] or other groups fighting [Iran’s] Islamic system … but are linked to America and [Israel’s intelligence agency] Mossad,” Times of Israel reported.

Israeli report exposes how Syrian fire took down Russian plane
 September 22, 2018
An Israeli report presents a detailed description of the events leading up to Syria shooting down a Russian spy plane, which occurred when Assad’s forces responded to an Israeli airstrike.
By: JNS.org and World Israel News Staff
Following an urgent meeting between Israeli and Russian military officials after the downing of a Russian spy plane over Syria, a 40-page report reveals that Syria shot down the aircraft while responding to an Israeli airstrike.
On the night of Sept. 17, a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane carrying 15 crew members was shot down just after Israel attacked a weapons depot outside Latikia believed to be connected to Iranian-backed terror.
Russia initially blamed Israel for the incident, but Israel responded that while it had, in fact, performed the attack—an official admission Israel makes only very rarely—it was not responsible for the downed aircraft.
Israeli officials traveled to Moscow on Thursday to present the report, which shows that Syria fired dozens of barrages indiscriminately for 40 minutes following the attack, long after the Israeli planes returned to home soil. According to the report, one of the missiles hit the plane, causing it to crash

Israel fortifies nuclear facilities in response to Iran’s ‘outrageous threats’

Israel fortifies nuclear facilities in response to Iran’s ‘outrageous threats’Iran launches a Shahab 3. (ISNA)
Israel’s atomic energy commission director announced at an international meeting this week that Israel is taking Iranian threats seriously and is protecting key infrastructure accordingly.
By: World Israel News Staff
At the annual meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on Tuesday, Israel’s atomic energy chief Zeev Snir addressed recent threats issued by the Iranian regime.
Snir commented, “We cannot ignore the repeated and explicit threats, made by Iran and its proxies, to attack Israel’s nuclear sites. These outrageous threats, require Israel to take action and continue to protect and defend its nuclear facilities.”
With regard to the potential for Iranian strikes, Snir noted, “These facilities are constantly upgraded and reinforced, in line with IAEA safety guidelines, in order to withstand any attack.”
In addition to highlighting Israeli preparedness for strikes from the Islamic Republic, Snir also challenged the IAEA to  investigate Iran’s secret nuclear activities.
To that end, Snir referenced Iran’s purported “lies and concealment efforts,” demanding that the IAEA “conduct a robust verification of Iran’s clandestine activities” and its “covert nuclear weapons program,” which Snir referred to as “a documented fact.”
Snir also drew attention to Syria’s covert attempt to construct a nuclear reactor, which Israel destroyed in 2007.

The judge used the new Basic Law to rule on a two-decades-old lawsuit, awarding a plaintiff millions of shekels in damages.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Jerusalem District Court Judge Moshe Drori awarded 5.4 million shekels (1.5 million US dollars) to a man who was badly injured 20 years ago in a Tel Aviv attack committed by Hamas terrorists. The basis of the ruling was the new nation-state law.
The unprecedented ruling quoted a clause in the law that appears on its face to provide support for Diaspora Jewry facing anti-Semitism: “The State shall strive to ensure the well-being of the Jewish people and of its citizens who are in distress due to their Jewishness or citizenship.”
However, as the judge wrote, “Anyone who reads the Hamas charter” can see the danger that the terror group poses to Jews, reasoning that “the Jewish people, … certainly when they are in Israel, are defined as ‘in distress due to their Jewishness.’”
Since the state did not “ensure the well-being of its citizens,” which is now its duty according to the nation-state law, he said that the law serves as “alternative relief in ensuring – and certainly not obstructing – a Jew injured in a terror attack by Hamas from receiving the highest possible compensation according to Israeli law.”
The plaintiff, David Mashiah, along with 15 other people, was injured in August 1998 when a bomb placed in a reinforced steel garbage can on Allenby Street in Tel Aviv exploded. He was the most seriously injured, to the point of receiving 100% disability from the National Insurance Institute.

Sales noted, “The threats posed by Iran’s support for terrorism are not confined to the Middle East; they are truly global.”

IDF to demolish home of soldier’s murderer

The multi-story structure was illegally rebuilt after being destroyed following a terrorist attack by the killer’s brother in 1994.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
The IDF Spokesperson announced Thursday that the entire house of First Sergeant Ronen Lubarsky’s killer in al-Amari near Ramallah would be destroyed.
The murderer, Islam Yousef Abu Hamid, dropped a marble slab on the soldier’s head during an arrest operation his unit carried out in May in the Ramallah area, and Lubarsky soon died of his injuries. The terrorist was arrested two weeks later, and talk almost immediately began regarding demolishing his family’s home, a move that many consider to be a deterrent to stop other potential attacks.
The original plan, however, was to demolish only two of the four floors of the home. It was then found that this house had been reconstructed illegally after the original structure was destroyed by Israeli authorities following the 1994 murder of a Shin Bet operative, Noam Cohen, at the hands of one of Abu Hamid’s brothers.
Cohen’s car was ambushed in a hail of gunfire during a Shin Bet operation near Ramallah. When he stepped out of the car to return fire, he was mortally wounded and later died. Two other colleagues were injured in the attack.

Downed Russian plane was Syria’s fault, Netanyahu tells Putin

Downed Russian plane was Syria’s fault, Netanyahu tells PutinPM Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin (Amos Ben-Gershom/GPO)
While Moscow initially blamed Israel for a Russian aircraft that was shot down in Syria, Netanyahu reportedly told Putin that Syria was “responsible for shooting down [the] plane.”
By: TPS and World Israel News
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the telephone on Tuesday, following Monday’s incident which saw Syrian missile defense systems shoot down a Russian military plane carrying 15 soldiers, shortly after the Israeli Air Force carried out an airstrike against an Iranian munitions base in Latakia.
On Monday, while responding to an Israeli airstrike, Syrian missile defense systems shot down a Russian plane carrying 15 Russian soldiers over the Mediterranean sea. Moscow blamed Israel for the incident, claiming that they were not briefed in time about the planned strike.
Netanyahu expressed his regret, but insisted that the blame rests with Syria, offering Israel’s full cooperation to Russia in investigating the incident.
While the Kremlin communicated to Israel that the strike violated Syria’s sovereignty and breached Russian-Israeli compacts regarding protocol in Syria, Putin reportedly was receptive to Netanyahu’s explanation, but warned the Israeli prime minister “not to allow such situations in the future,” according to Times of Israel.

Responding to demands from the Ethiopian-Israeli community, Netanyahu vowed to facilitate the immigration of around 1,000 Ethiopians from the Falassh Mura community.
By: World Israel News Staff
At a meeting on Sunday of the ministerial committee that overseas issues related to the Ethiopian-Israeli community, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to help bring to Israel a significant number of new immigrants from Ethiopia.
At the meeting, Netanyahu commented, “[A]fter consulting with MKs [David] Amsalem and [Avraham] Neguise, I am pleased to inform you that I have decided that approximately 1,000 members [of the Falash Mura community] – whose children are already here – must be brought to Israel.”
Netanyahu noted that the decision follows immigration of 1,300 Falash Mura who already immigrated to Israel. The term “Falash Mura” refers to Ethiopians who claim Jewish descent but whose ancestors converted to Christianity either forcibly or voluntarily.
On Sunday, Netanyahu highlighted “the importance with which we have been handling this precious community, which is part of our people and part of our state.”

Amid shared concerns over Iran’s regional aggression among other interests, Israel and Turkey have been attempting to mend relations with one another despite their differences, according to an Israeli media report on Monday.
Were the latest discussions to mark progress, both nations would return their respective ambassadors in early October, according to the Israeli daily Yediot Achronot.
Such a move would occur five months after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blamed Israel for its response to violent protests along the Gaza border, labeling the country as a “terrorist state” that commits “genocide.”
Turkey recalled its ambassador and kicked out Israeli ambassador Eitan Na’eh and his country’s consul in Istanbul. Israel retaliated by expelling Turkey’s consul-general in Jerusalem and summoned its deputy ambassador in Tel Aviv.

Israeli kidney donations triples due to Orthodox Jewish donors
 September 17, 2018
Israeli kidney donations triples due to Orthodox Jewish donors(Shutterstock)
The number of annual live kidney transplants in Israel has nearly tripled since 2010. New research says the growth is due to Orthodox donors.
By: Brian Blum, Israel21c
The number of live kidney transplants performed per year in Israel has nearly tripled since 2010. A new research paper co-authored by Prof. Meni Koslowsky, a psychology professor at Ariel and Bar-Ilan universities, claims that the majority of that growth is coming from the Orthodox Jewish population.

Koslowsky and his colleagues wonder whether the results can be replicated in other countries through similar faith-based initiatives.
Live transplants are greatly preferred over donations from someone who has died. The transplant can be planned and the number of kidneys available can be increased through educational and outreach programs.

The need for such an increase jumped in 2008 when an international agreement known as the Declaration of Istanbul came out in support of prohibiting organ trafficking and “transplant tourism.”
The Istanbul Declaration resulted in a decrease in the number of Israelis obtaining kidney transplants overseas and a subsequent increase in the number of patients on the waiting list.
Ambivalent relationship to organ donations
Religious Israelis have long had an ambivalent relationship to the concept of organ donation. Historically, many (although not all) rabbinic authorities rejected the use of organs for transplantation from deceased donors. At the same time, most rabbis encourage living kidney donation.
Nonprofit organization Matnat Chaim (“Gift of Life” in English) was established in 2009 to educate potential donors from the Orthodox Jewish community on the risks and benefits of “altruistic” (that is, non-obligatory) live kidney donation.

On a budget of just $1 million a year, Matnat Chaim has advertised on radio, television, in newspapers and on the Internet. The organization helps donors navigate the health system and refers them to physicians with particular experience in advising kidney donors.

The results: while the number of kidneys from deceased donors increased slightly in the first six years of the past decade – from 87 in 2010 to 115 in 2016 – the number of live kidney donors jumped from 78 to 222 in the same time period.
Non-argumentative influence
The paper also reveals that, while only 27 percent of live donors in 2011 were referred by Matnat Chaim, by 2016 that number had increased to 55 percent – a majority of all kidney donations in the country. By the end of 2016, Matnat Chaim had facilitated a total of 494 live kidney donations.
The paper goes into details on what Matnat Chaim is doing right, including techniques such as “non-argumentative influence” and the “messenger effect” – the use of influential figures such as rabbis to give the kidney donation message greater weight.
There’s still work to be done: 847 individuals were still on the Israel kidney transplant waiting list at the end of 2016, the researchers point out. That’s 13 percent of the total number of patients being treated with renal replacement therapy (dialysis).

As the singing continued, many spoke quietly amongst themselves of how Fuld had impacted their lives at different stages.

On Sunday morning, Fuld was stabbed to death in a terrorist attack outside a supermarket at the Gush Etzion Junction. Before succumbing to his wounds, Fuld managed to chase down the terrorist and shoot him.

By: Daniel Siryoti, Israel Hayom/JNS.org
A series of recent U.S. steps against the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) has infuriated the Palestinian leadership, but the outrage directed at the U.S. administration has been amplified by growing criticism directed at P.A. leader Mahmoud Abbas, who has made “every possible mistake” since U.S. President Donald Trump entered the White House, according to a senior Palestinian official who spoke to Israel Hayom.
The official said that Abbas—fearing additional American sanctions on the P.A.—has instructed the Palestinians to “stop attacking [U.S. President Donald] Trump and the administration in Washington and to moderate statements against the U.S.”
Following the American decision last week to close the PLO mission in Washington, as well as the latest decision to stop funding projects that bring Israelis and the Palestinians together, Abbas has decided to shelve his plan to criticize the actions of the Trump administration at the U.N. General Assembly in New York at the end of the month.
“The closure of the PLO offices in Washington was shocking,” the official told Israel Hayom. “We didn’t think Trump would go so far as to shut down the official Palestinian [diplomatic] mission in the U.S.”

Very few Jews will attend a memorial for terror victims in France, despite the fact that a disproportionately high percentage of those murdered were Jews.
By: Ben Kerstein, The Algemeiner
Despite the disturbingly high number of terror attacks on French Jews in recent years, there will be little or no Jewish presence at this year’s ceremonies marking a national day of mourning for French terror victims, because it falls on September 19 — Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
Chief Rabbi of France Haim Korsia told Makor Rishon he has participated in previous such ceremonies, at one of which he heard “the emotional and sad testimony of my good friend Shmuel Sandler,” a father and grandfather of victims of the 2012 massacre at a Jewish school in Toulouse.
This year will be different, but “I asked the rabbis to add a special prayer for the victims of the terror attacks that struck our country. This is our way to connect with the events that take place on a national level.”
The chief rabbi stated that the date of the national ceremony may be changed in the coming years, and he has asked for it to be moved to the month of March.
The president of the French chapter of B’nai B’rith, Philippe Meyer, tweeted, “It is unacceptable to us that they will not allow Jewish families, who are victims of French terror, to participate in the national ceremony for victims of terror because it takes place on Yom Kippur.”

Israel has released an American law professor detained for allegedly trying to block Israeli police operating in an illegal Bedouin hamlet slated for demolition.
Frank Romano, 66, was detained on Friday in the embattled village of Khan al-Ahmar, along with two Palestinian activists.
Witnesses said that Romano stood in front of heavy equipment being used to clear barriers that had been set up to slow demolition. Activists said he began a hunger strike while in detention.
Gaby Lasky, Romano’s lawyer and a star left-wing activist, said a court ordered his release Sunday. She said he was freed early Monday after police decided not to appeal the decision.
Upon his release, Romano returned to the village and said: “I can continue the struggle with you.”

European Commission warns Ireland against Israel boycott bill

European Commission warns Ireland against Israel boycott billIrish Senator Frances Black with Palestinian supporters. (AP)
An Irish law against importing goods and services from ‘occupied territories’ could create severe legal issues for the Emerald Isle.
By: World Israel News Staff
Ireland could face infringement proceedings by the European Union (EU) if a bill that would ban imports from Israeli factories in Judea and Samaria and in the Golan Heights becomes law, the European Commission has warned.
The Irish Times (IT) reported Saturday that an Irish government official privately sought the advice of the commission’s trade directorate last week on the proposed legislation.
The controversial bill proposes to make the purchase of souvenirs in Israel a criminal act, punishable by a maximum of five years in jail and a $310,000 fine.
Fianna Fáil joined the largest opposition party, Sinn Féin, and others in passing what is officially called the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Act of 2018. Although it does not mention Israel, or even “Palestine,” by name, its sponsor, Senator Frances Black (Independent), has openly noted that its wording was carefully formulated so that it would only apply to the Jewish state.
Fine Gael opposes the passage of the bill on the basis of advice from the attorney general that trade is regulated under EU law and Ireland cannot introduce a unilateral ban on goods imported from Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Linoy Ashram for her “outstanding achievement” on the international stage.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Nineteen-year-old Linoy Ashram won her second medal at the World Championship of Rhythmic Gymnastics in the individual all-around competition on Friday. She came in second place to Russian Dina Averina in Bulgaria, after taking silver in the individual competition for hoops and bronze in the ribbon event earlier in the week.
Last year at the Worlds, she took bronze in the all-around, a mere month after suffering a serious knee injury. She also collected a bronze at the time in the individual ribbon event.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Ashram Saturday night to wish her well.
“Linoy, congratulations! This is an outstanding achievement. You have made all of us proud of you,” he told her. “You do this with amazing flexibility and great personal ability. This lifts all of our national pride. May you have great success. … Congratulations to you.”

Opinion: Fresh American blood on Abbas’ hands

Opinion: Fresh American blood on Abbas’ handsPalestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (AP/Majdi Mohammed,l)
Abbas’ relentless incitement against Israel and Jews has brought to the murder of Israeli-American Ari Fuld, whose blood, among that of many others, is all over the PA leader’s hands.
By: Bassam Tawil, The Gatestone Institute
In a speech before the PLO Executive Committee in Ramallah on September 15, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas repeated the old libel that Israel was planning to establish special Jewish prayer zones inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Abbas claimed that Israel was seeking to copy the example of the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, where Jews and Muslims pray in different sections.
Abbas did not say what his lie was based on. He also did provide any evidence of Israel’s ostensible plot against the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He said, nevertheless, that the Palestinians, together with Jordan, were planning to bring this issue before the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.
Abbas’s allegation was quickly picked up by several media outlets in the Arab world, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The headlines that appeared on websites affiliated with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second largest terrorist group in the Gaza Strip, claimed that Israel is planning to permit Jews to pray inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Needless to say, there is no Israeli plan to allow Jews to pray inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque. However, in the past few years Jews, like all other non-Muslims, have been allowed to resume their perfectly legal visits to the Temple Mount. Thousands of Jews have toured the holy site under police protection, despite provocations and violent attacks by Muslims. It is worth noting that any kind of prayer of “religious displays” by Jews or Christians anywhere on the Temple Mount are completely forbidden by the Israel Police

Analysis: What drives Gaza’s weekly ‘March of Return’?

Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar admits Gaza’s weekly March of Return was staged to divert pressure to Israel. Why is Hamas feeling the heat?
By: Daniel Krygier, World Israel News
The weekly “March of Return” protests on the Gaza-Israel border have largely been blamed on Israel and the move of the US embassy to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. However, as is frequently the case with Gaza, there is more than meets the eye.
Hamas terror chief Yahiya Sinwar recently admitted that the violent border clashes were staged to divert pressure to Israel.
Addressing a Hamas conference in Gaza, Sinwar said, “After the reconciliation efforts (between Hamas and Fatah) reached an impasse, a number of factions planned to cause an internal explosion in the Gaza Strip, but the Marches of Return thwarted the plan.”
International media has ignored this candid admission by the Hamas leader.
What pressure did Hamas feel the need to divert to Israel? What are the deeper driving forces behind Gaza’s seemingly chronic state of crisis?

The division between Hamas-ruled Gaza and Fatah-ruled Ramallah have not only complicated prospects for Arab-Israeli peace negotiations. They have divided the Arab populations to the point where they today effectively constitute two different political entities.
There is no love lost between Hamas and Fatah. While most Gazans voted for Hamas in the 2006 election, years of rampant poverty and autocratic Islamist rule in Gaza have left most of the population in dire straits. Since most of the international aid goes to Fatah, reconciliation between Hamas and its Ramallah-based rival has been a priority for many Gaza residents.
However, Fatah has demanded that Hamas disarm and hand power over Gaza to Fatah. Unsurprisingly Hamas has refused to disarm and is no hurry to let go of its Islamist-ruled kingdom on the Mediterranean shore.

Trump and Pompeo condemned ex-Secretary of State John Kerry for carrying on talks with the Iranian regime in an attempt to salvage the 2015 nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic.
By: AP
President Donald Trump late Thursday accused John Kerry of holding “illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people.”
When reports of Kerry’s ex-officio contacts with Zarif first surfaced in May, Trump tweeted similar thoughts. “John Kerry can’t get over the fact that he had his chance and blew it! Stay away from negotiations John, you are hurting your country!” he said on May 8.
A day earlier, he tweeted: “The United States does not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!

Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner defended the administration’s recent moves, which he claims could pave the way to a lasting solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
By: World Israel News Staff
Jared Kushner, who serves as a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, spoke with the New York Times on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of the Oslo peace accords. While the agreements were intended to facilitate a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, critics of the agreement point to the Palestinians’ increased use of terror attacks and intensifying hostility in the ensuing decades as proof of the Oslo accords’ ultimate failure.
In his comments to the Times, Kushner addressed Trump’s recent cuts to Palestinian funding, which eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and threaten to shutter the Palestinians’ dedicated United Nations agency, UNRWA. Among the US administration’s cuts were $200 million in Palestinian aid, over $300 million to UNRWA, and another $25 million for health care in Arab sections of Jerusalem.

An overwhelming majority of British Jews believe the Labour Party is anti-Semitic and that its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is an anti-Semite, according to a new poll.
By: Benjamin Kerstein, The Algemeiner
A huge majority — 85.9% — of British Jews believe Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is an antisemite, a poll conducted by The Jewish Chronicle revealed.
This marked a massive rise from the previous such survey, in which only 39% of Jews believed Corbyn was antisemitic.
British Jews also expressed an extremely low opinion of the Labour Party in general. The poll showed that 85.6% believed Labour suffered from “very high” levels of antisemitism.
Corbyn and his party have been beset with a series of high-profile antisemitism scandals for several years, which has resulted in the resignation and suspension of several prominent officials. Corbyn himself was recently caught on video saying that “Zionists” did not understand “English irony” despite “having lived in this country for a very long time.”

A bipartisan bill that would cement U.S. military aid to Israel into law passed a major hurdle on Wednesday night.
The U.S. House of Representative approved the measure, known as the U.S.-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, several weeks after it passed the Senate. It will now head back to the Senate for approval, after which it could be submitted to President Donald Trump to be signed into law.
Under the proposed legislation, the $38 billion in military aid over 10 years spelled out under the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding would be funded through a special mechanism that would be separate from the annual budget.

Israel to replace national police chief amid Netanyahu probesIsraeli Chief of Police Roni Alsheikh and PM Netanyahu (Miriam Alster/Flash90)
After an announcement that Israel’s police chief will be replaced, opposition leaders claimed the move is a reaction to the ongoing corruption probe of the prime minister.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Israel’s public security minister says he will replace the country’s police chief, Roni Alsheikh, at the end of his term, which is set to expire this year.
The change comes in the midst of police investigations into corruption by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan announced possible replacements for Alsheikh as national police chief on Thursday. He cited “differences of opinion” with Alsheikh as a reason for not extending his term an additional year.
It wasn’t clear how, if at all, Alsheikh’s departure might affect investigations of Netanyahu.
Alsheikh has overseen corruption probes related to the prime minister during his three-year term. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing, calling the investigations a “witch hunt.”

Netanyahu vows: Israel won’t repeat mistakes of Yom Kippur War

Netanyahu vows: Israel won’t repeat mistakes of Yom Kippur WarPM Benjamin Netanyahu. (Amos Ben-Gershom/GPO)
As the Jewish state approaches the 45th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, the prime minister reflected on the lessons learned from that costly conflict.
By: TPS
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel would never repeat the mistake it made in 1973 by not preempting an enemy attack.
He made the remarks on Sunday, during his weekly cabinet meeting, as the country marks the 45th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.
“We absorbed a bloody attack that cost us thousands of victims,” Netanyahu said in his address. “We must do everything to prevent war. Its victims … are a gaping wound in the heart of the nation. However, if war is forced upon us, we must do everything to win with minimal losses.”
Netanyahu explained that 45 years ago, the country’s intelligence erred with regard to “a mistaken assessment regarding the [belligerent] intentions of Egypt and Syria” to go to war.
“When these intentions became clear beyond all doubt, and when the danger was on our very doorstep, the political leadership made a grievous mistake by not allowing a preemptive strike. We will never repeat this mistake,” the prime minister emphasized.

An American law professor was detained by Israeli police for trying to block Israeli troops in an illegal Bedouin hamlet slated for demolition, his Israeli lawyer said Saturday.
Frank Romano, 66, is being held at a lockup in Jerusalem and is to appear before an Israeli military court Monday, said attorney Gaby Lasky, a star extreme-left-wing lawyer. She said she is trying to get a hearing sooner, before a civil court.
Romano, who reportedly also has French citizenship, was detained Friday in the village of Khan al-Ahmar, along with two Palestinian activists. Romano stood in front of heavy equipment being used to clear barriers that had been set up to slow the demolition, witnesses said.
Israeli police said three people were detained for causing disturbances.
Romano was initially taken to a police station where he briefly met with activists from an Israeli-Palestinian group, Combatants for Peace. Nahoum Oltchik, a member of the group, said Romano told him he began a hunger strike and would refrain from eating until Israel had halts plans to raze Khan al-Ahmar, a hamlet of 180 Bedouin deemed illegal by Israel’s High Court of Justice.

Belgium suspends funding for Palestinian education after schools named for terrorist

Officials announced Friday that the Belgian government would suspend funding for Palestinian schools after two more were named after terrorists.
By: World Israel News Staff
The Belgian Ministry of Development Cooperation announced on Friday it was suspending its funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA) education system after the latter named two schools after terrorists.
In an apparent mockery of Belgium, the Palestinian educational system named two schools after “the Martyr Dalal Mughrabi” while attempting to circumvent Belgian protests against this policy.
Mughrabi led the most lethal terror attack in Israel’s history, known as the Coastal Road massacre in 1978, during which she and other Fatah terrorists hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Highway, murdering 37 civilians, 12 of them children, and wounding over 70.
In September 2017, the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) exposed the PA for naming a Belgian-funded school “The Martyr Dalal Mughrabi Elementary School.”
In October 2017, Belgium froze its funding for PA schools and demanded that the name be changed. In July, the name had still not been changed.
Last month, Belgium reiterated that it “unequivocally condemns the glorification of terrorist attacks” through PA schools.

Report: Saudi Arabia acquires Iron Dome system from Israel

Report: Saudi Arabia acquires Iron Dome system from IsraelAn Iron Dome system intercepts Hamas rocket in Ashdod. (IDF/File)
The deal was reportedly carried out with American mediation and includes expert exchanges and the acquisition of advanced weapons systems. Israel denies the report.
By: World Israel News Staff
Saudi Arabia has acquired its first Iron Dome anti-rocket system from Israel as part of a recent rapprochement between the two countries, the Saudi newspaper Al-Khaleej Online reported Thursday.
According to the report, the deal was carried out with American mediation.
Diplomatic sources cited in the report claimed that the deal between Jerusalem and Riyadh included “expert exchanges” and the acquisition of advanced and sophisticated weapons systems similar to those carried out by the United Arab Emirates.
The report said that the first Iron Dome batteries will be deployed in December on the border between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, from where the Houthi rebels have launched missiles into the kingdom.
The paper’s correspondent in Jerusalem, Nader Safadi, reported that Israel initially refused to sell the advanced missile interceptor system to an Arab state for fear of harming its own security. However, the US has reportedly convinced Israel that the Saudis would pledge not to endanger Israel or its allies.
Israeli security officials denied the report.

A bomb planted by terrorists was placed under the cover of the weekly protests on the Gaza-Israel border.
By: World Israel News Staff
IDF forces on Thursday safety detonated a bomb they had exposed earlier in the week on the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip, preventing a serious attack.
“The terror squad that planted the bomb had plans to attack IDF soldiers and disrupt the activity of the forces operating in the area,” the IDF said in a statement.
According to the IDF, the bomb was placed under the cover of the weekly riots on Friday.
“The placing of the explosive charge by the terrorist cell in the context of the violent disturbances is further evidence that the Hamas terrorist organization is working to preserve the confrontation in the area of the fence and to harm IDF soldiers, while using civilians in the Gaza Strip as human shields and as cover for terrorist activity,” an IDF spokesperson stated.

An Israeli Cabinet minister says if Iran chooses to continue pursuing a nuclear program it will face a “military” answer.
Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz was responding Wednesday to the Iranian nuclear chief’s warning that the Islamic Republic’s program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Ali Akbar Salehi says Iran won’t be deterred by President Donald Trump’s sanctions and withdrawal from the global nuclear deal.
Salehi stressed that Iran would be guided by “prudence and wisdom” when weighing whether to abandon the deal if European nations fail to protect it from Trump, dismissing out of hand the idea of caving to American demands to renegotiate the accord.

Israeli forces on Thursday dismantled five corrugated metal shacks that had been set up by Palestinian activists protesting the anticipated razing of a nearby illegal Bedouin hamlet.
Protest leader Abdullah Abu Rahmeh said about 200 soldiers converged on the area of the Khan al-Ahmar encampment before dawn, dismantled the shacks and loaded the parts onto trucks. The encampment itself was not touched. Protesters chanted “Out, out, terrorist army,” as the trucks and soldiers left after daybreak.
There were no violent clashes, despite threats by residents.
Israel’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal last week, paving the way for Khan al-Ahmar’s potential demolition. Israel says Khan al-Ahmar was illegally built and in an unsafe location near a major highway. It has offered to resettle the residents 12 kilometers (7 miles) away under what it says are improved conditions — with connections to water, electricity and sewage treatment they currently don’t have. The residents have rejected all alternatives offered to them.

Imagine President Trump being invited to speak at the funeral of a white singer who he admired (say, Ted Nugent, if he were to pass) and seeing that David Duke was on stage in a place of honor. Well, former President Clinton gave a speech in the presence of Louis Farrakhan at the funeral for Aretha Franklin. Hillary Clinton was sitting off to the side but did not speak.
Why would President Clinton, a good man and a friend of the Jewish people, do this? There are several possible answers. First, he was taken by surprise at Farrakhan’s presence and didn’t want to do anything to disrupt the service. But the “shoe on the other foot” question remains: Would he have acted similarly if it had been Duke rather than Farrakhan?

Could a Palestinian-Jordanian confederation bring decades of unrest to an end?
By: Israel Kasnet, JNS.org
Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas recently told a group of Israeli activists that the Trump administration proposed a confederation between the Palestinians and Jordan. For years, the idea of Jordan serving as a state for the Palestinians has been tossed around, with some prominent Jordanians and Palestinians themselves supporting the idea.
Former Jordanian Prime Minister Zayd ar-Rifa’i did when he said in 1975 that “Jordan is Palestine.” King Hussein did when he asserted in 1981 that “Jordan is Palestine and Palestine is Jordan.”
Even Abbas himself did.
According to a 2012 article by Daoud Kattab in The Atlantic, “Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported that Abbas informed several PLO leaders ‘to be prepared for a new confederation project with Jordan and other parties in the international community,’ and that his office has already issued reports that evaluate ‘the best strategies to lead possible negotiations with Jordan’ towards ‘reviving the confederation.’”
Even after King Hussein decided to relinquish Jordan and Samaria in 1988 and recognize the PLO as the sole entity responsible for the Palestinian population there, the matter remained under discussion.

The heir of a French Jew persecuted during the Holocaust was awarded a painting looted by the Nazis.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
After almost eight decades, the granddaughter of a Jewish art collector whose paintings were stolen by the Nazis had a family reunion Wednesday with one of the works, an impressionist piece by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Sylvie Sulitzer saw “Two Women in a Garden” for the first time at New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage after unveiling it at a ceremony that included law enforcement officials representing the offices that helped get the painting back to her. She is her grandparents’ only living descendant.
“I’m very thankful to be able to show my beloved family, wherever they are, that after what they’ve been through, there is justice,” Sulitzer said tearfully.
The reunion, though, will probably be short-lived. She will likely auction off the painting to pay back compensation she had received for missing artwork.

Netanyahu hails US decision to shutter PLO headquarters in D.C.
 September 12, 2018
On Tuesday evening, Netanyahu praised the US’ decision to close the PLO mission in Washington.
By: Benjamin Kerstein, The Algemeiner
“The US made the right decision regarding the PLO mission in Washington,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, according to Israel’s Channel Two.
“Israel supports the American actions that are intended to make it clear to the Palestinians that the refusal to negotiate and the attempts to attack Israel in international forums will not advance peace.”
The US announced that it would close the mission on Monday, giving the staff several months to vacate. The State Department said in a statement that the move was directly connected to the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to negotiate with Israel or to consider any peace plan put forward by the Trump administration.
“We have permitted the PLO office to conduct operations that support the objective of achieving a lasting, comprehensive peace between Israelis and the Palestinians since the expiration of a previous waiver in November 2017,” said the statement.
“However, the PLO has not taken steps to advance the start of direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel. To the contrary, PLO leadership has condemned a US peace plan they have not yet seen and refused to engage with the US government with respect to peace efforts and otherwise.”
“As such, and reflecting Congressional concerns, the Administration has decided that the PLO office in Washington will close at this point,” the statement added.

Iran nuclear chief threatens Israel with ‘consequences’

Iran nuclear chief threatens Israel with ‘consequences’Iran's nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi (AP/Vahid Salemi)

“I hope they will not commit a similar mistake again because the consequences would be, I think, harsh,” Salehi warned Israel regarding its plans to sabotage the Iran nuclear program.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Iran’s nuclear chief said Tuesday he hopes Tehran’s atomic deal with world powers will survive President Donald Trump withdrawing the US from it. He also threatened that the Islamic Republic’s program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Ali Akbar Salehi stressed that Iran would be guided by “prudence and wisdom” when weighing whether to abandon the deal if European nations fail to protect it from Trump.
The US withdrawal from the deal already has badly shaken Iran’s anemic economy, crashing its currency, the rial. That likely will be compounded by US sanctions coming in November that threaten Iran’s oil exports, a major source of government funding.
Salehi dismissed out of hand the idea of caving to American demands to renegotiate the accord.
“Yes, we have our problems. Yes, the sanctions have caused some problems for us. But if a nation decides to enjoy political independence, it will have to pay the price,” Salehi said. “If Iran decided today to go back to what it was before, the lackey of the United States,” the situation would be different.
A string of bombings, blamed on Israel, targeted a number of scientists beginning in 2010 at the height of Western concerns over Iran’s program. Israel never claimed responsibility for the attacks, though Israeli officials have boasted in the past about the reach of the country’s intelligence services.

Residents of illegal Bedouin outpost threaten violent struggle against evacuation
Khan al-Ahmar residents threatened to respond with violence to any attempt to remove them from their illegally built hamlet.
By: World Israel News Staff
Residents of the illegal Bedouin hamlet of Khan al Ahmar, located east of Jerusalem, are threatening to violently resist a court order to evacuate the area.
Salem Abu Dabuk, a resident, told IDF Radio on Wednesday that they “will not leave and sit quietly. They [Israel] want to move us to an area which is not suitable for us.”
He also dismissed allegations that the Palestinian Authority (PA) was pressuring the residents to reject any court-arbitrated settlement in order generate more strife.
“We asked the Palestinian Authority to be with us in this battle after the High Court of Justice turned to politics,” he claimed, charging the court of not rendering justice.
The PA is heavily embroiled in the affair and announced Tuesday a new push against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague over the slated demolition of the village.
The submission “included a focus on the war crimes facing Khan al-Ahmar, specifically the crimes of forcible displacement, ethnic cleansing and the destruction of civilian property,” said chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.

To mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, a terror group leader demanded renewed holy war against America’s presence across the globe.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Marking the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the leader of al-Qaeda has called on Muslims to wage war against the United States throughout the world.
In a 30-minute speech released Tuesday, Ayman al-Zawahri went to great lengths to portray the United States as a religious enemy of Muslims, using Washington’s transfer of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as evidence of that enmity.
The Washington-based SITE group, which monitors media material by militants across the world, released an English transcript of the speech.
“America (is) the number one enemy of Muslims … despite of its professed secularism,” al-Zawahri said in the video. He listed 14 directives to fight the United States, including an appeal for Muslim unity and jihadists close ranks.

Terror-supporting family says Israel bars them from travel, will appeal at court
 September 12, 2018
“There is no legal prohibition, and clearly there is pressure from the Israeli security forces, so we will ask to remove this injustice,” Bassem Tamimi said of the alleged ban.
By: World Israel News Staff
Members of Ahed Tamimi‘s family claim that Israel is barring their exit from the country, the Ha’aretz daily reported Saturday.
According to the family, they were notified by the Palestinian District Coordination and Liaison Administration of the ban.
The report quotes an Israeli security source who confirmed the family’s claim, but the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency) stated that Tamimi, her parents and one of her brothers are barred from entering Israeli-administered territory only.
Tamimi was released in July from an Israeli prison after serving eight months for assaulting IDF soldiers and for incitement to terrorism.
Bassem Tamimi, Ahed’s father, told Ha’aretz that the family had been invited by human rights organizations for meetings in Europe. The flight was planned for Friday, but then they were allegedly notified of the ban.
“This is a pre-planned round of meetings for Belgium, France, and Spain for about 20 days, and the whole family has been invited,” Bassem said.

Israel lends expertise to international court for first time in half-century

Israel lends expertise to international court for first time in half-centuryInternational Criminal Court in The Hague (shutterstock)
For the first time in years, Israel was involved in the decision-making process in a case at the International Court of Justice that did not involve a legal issue related to the Jewish state.
By: World Israel News Staff
This week, Israel took part in a debate at the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) for the first time in over 50 years that did not place the Jewish state at the center of the conflict.
Specifically, Israel participated in oral proceedings related to an Indian ocean archipelago, the rights to which are disputed by the United Kingdom and Mauritius. Sovereignty over the islands in question, known as the Chagos Archipelago, remains at the heart of the dispute.
Israeli officials from the foreign and justice ministries concurred with the UK’s position that the court lacks jurisdiction to rule on the matter, seeking to pursuade the tribunal to issue an advisory opinion to that effect. While the ICJ’s advisory opinions are not binding on the parties, their legal importance is generally recognized and respected by the international community.

Opinion: European hypocrisy rears its ugly head
Despite their claims to be Israel’s greatest friends, EU member states are standing together to defend Palestinian interests and ignoring anti-Semitic propaganda.
By: Eldad Beck, JNS.org
The first day of the 5779th year of the Hebrew calendar will be remembered as a historic day for EU hypocrisy: On that day, EU member states, including those that claim they are Israel’s greatest friends, decided to stand with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and release a statement that completely contradicts the supposed principles of the EU.
By calling on the Israeli government not to act in the spirit of the High Court of Justice’s ruling and evacuate and demolish the illegal Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Britain have violated official EU foreign policy, which supports the achievement of peace on the basis of the 1993 Oslo Accords and recognizes Israel as a sovereign state.
According to the Oslo Accords, Israel is responsible for Area C until other diplomatic agreements are reached on the matter. The EU has systematically acted in violation of international law and the Oslo Accords and without coordinating with Israel to establish and encourage illegal Bedouin settlements.

Bar Bonen, who had joined anti-separatist forces fighting in the Ukraine, was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A self-described Israeli military adviser to a force fighting pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the Ukraine was found dead Monday of a gunshot wound to the head, possibly self-inflicted.
A handgun was found near Bar Bonen’s body in an apartment in Kiev and the initial conclusion of the police is that the death was a suicide, although they say the investigation has not yet been completed.
To bolster the theory, a goodbye letter was posted on Bonen’s Facebook page, which said in part, “I am a broken soul, and I didn’t open it very much to most of you. I can no longer tolerate this internal pain…”

US cuts another $25 million in Palestinian aid; PA accuses Trump of ‘bad faith’

The Trump administration is redirecting another $25 million in aid that was slated for Palestinian coffers to “high-priority projects elsewhere.”
B: World Israel News Staff
On Saturday, the Trump administration announced it is “reprogramming” $25 million in aid that had been earmarked for hospitals in Arab sections of Jerusalem. The funding will instead be directed to “high-priority projects elsewhere,” a move that follows the administration’s decision to stop funding the Palestinians’ dedicated United Nations agency, UNRWA.
The steps are the product of an expansive review of US assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which has historically cost the Americans hundreds of millions of dollars a year. President Trump ordered the review to make sure aid complied with US national interest mandates.
The Palestinians labelled the latest aid cut “an act of political blackmail,” a common response from the PA when conditions are attached to international aid.
In addition to slashing more than $300 million in aid to UNRWA last week, the State Department announced a cut of over $200 million in bilateral aid to the Palestinians in late August.
PA lead negotiator Saeb Erekat responded to the latest cuts by accusing the US of operating in “bad faith” in a manner that disincentivizes moderate forces in the Middle East and encourages radicals instead.

A mob attacked a kosher restaurant in Germany, yelling “Get out of Germany, Jewish pigs.”
About a dozen assailants clad in black hurled rocks, bottles and a metal pipe at the Schalom kosher restaurant in Chemnitz, Germany, in late August, Die Welt and the Freie Presse reported Saturday.
The owner, Uwe Dzieballa, was injured in the shoulder, the reports said.
According to AFP, police in Saxony confirmed to Die Welt that they had received a complaint of the attack on the “Schalom” restaurant on the sidelines of anti-immigration demonstrations in response to the murder of a German man, allegedly by asylum seekers.
The full details of the attack, which was reported only two weeks after it happened, have not yet been revealed, although it appears to be one of the harshest anti-Semitic attacks perpetrated by the German far-right in many years, according to Ha’aretz.

In a fresh round of bombings and air raids, Russian and Syrian planes launched attacks that killed 4 in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province.
By: AP
Syrian government and Russian warplanes on Saturday targeted the southern edge of Idlib province in what activists described as the most intense airstrikes in weeks, ratcheting up military pressure on the densely populated rebel-held bastion.
More than 60 air raids killed at least four civilians in southern Idlib, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and rescue workers. The bombings also included indiscriminate barrel bombs, dropped from choppers, invariably blamed on the government.
The bombings, including shelling from government areas, came a day after Iran and Russia backed a military campaign in the rebel-held area despite Turkey’s pleas for a cease-fire. Turkey has troops and 12 observation points that circle Idlib.
State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV said the government was retaliating against overnight shelling from rebel-held areas on a government-held town in Hama province, south of Idlib. The shelling late Friday in Mhradah killed nine civilians, according to state media. The state news agency SANA said government forces have shelled “terrorist” posts in northern Hama.

By: TPS
Israel does not object to diplomatic and commercial ties between Syria and Iran, but it will never allow Iran to turn Syria into a forward military base, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Thursday in interview with Radio Farda.
Speaking to Iranian journalist Mehrdad Mirdamadi, Liberman told the Persian language network, which broadcasts to Iran from the Czech Republic, that Israel is not against “economic, diplomatic or other cooperation” between Syria and Iran, but it is completely opposed to Tehran establishing a “military presence and is opposed to its efforts to undermine the stability of the entire Middle East, the stability of our entire region.”
Liberman said that Tehran’s aggression in the region had led Arab nations to realize that Iran’s extremist regime was their enemy and not Israel.

Police are investigating signs with the message “Israel is a racist endeavour” that were posted on bus stops around London.
By: Word Israel News Staff
The police in London launched an investigation following the appearance of signs on the city’s bus stops reading “Israel is a racist endeavour.”
The signs are believed to be in protest of the British Labour Party’s decision on Tuesday to accept the official definition of anti-Semitism formulated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA).
The UK’s Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) watchdog noted that the poster offensive “explicitly mocks and breaches the International Definition of Antisemitism which states that ‘Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination (e.g. by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavour)’ is anti-Semitic.”
The large signs have appeared in at least four locations, including bus stops in Westminster, Waterloo and Bloomsbury, the UK’s Evening Standard reported Wednesday. One was posted opposite Parliament.
Transport for London (TfL) said the sign were “absolutely not authorized.”

The Muslim-majority African state may soon reestablish diplomatic relations with Israel 46 years after breaking them off.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Chad and Israel have been quietly discussing the renewal of diplomatic relations for three months, according to a report Wednesday on Channel 10 News.
The ball started rolling in May, said the report, when Israel’s UNESCO ambassador, Carmel Shama-Hacohen received a visit from a Rabbi Avraham Moyal and a French-Jewish businessman, Philip Solomon. They told him that President Idriss Deby wanted to start talks on the diplomatic front, and the Foreign Ministry told Shama-Cohen to go ahead.
Perhaps indicating the seriousness with which the president is taking the issue, the report added that Deby would like to send his son in the near future as his personal emissary to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the possibilities.

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
The Gazan Ministry of Interior announced Wednesday that Hamas commander Abdel Rahim Abbas was killed in an “accidental explosion” in the bomb disposal unit’s headquarters.
It said the blast was caused by “the ignition of explosives during inspection,” in the Passports Building at the Department of Explosives Engineering west of Gaza City and that the ensuing fire was put out by police and civil defense units that arrived on the scene.
The Gazan Ministry of Health added that two other people were treated at the Al-Shifa hospital for minor injuries due to the accident.
The Izz al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades put out a statement praising the 42-year-old lieutenant colonel as a “martyr” who had a life of “a great and honorable jihad.” The terrorist group lauded Abbas as a diligent field commander who trained Hamas security forces well and saw the “fruit” of his labor in the “digging of tunnels of pride and dignity to the homeland,” referring to the terror tunnels Hamas digs into Israel for the purposes of committing terror attacks in Jewish communities.

How realistic is a peace proposal based on a Jordanian-Palestinian-Israeli confederation? What does it say about the Palestinian leader’s goal?
By: Daniel Krygier, World Israel News
Palestinian Authority (PA) leader Mahmoud Abbas recently claimed that President Donald Trump had offered him a US peace plan based on a confederation with Jordan. If true, it would hardly be the first time this plan had been proposed over the decades.
How realistic is such a proposal, and why has it resurfaced again? What does it mean for Israel and her neighbors?
Unsurprisingly, Jordan firmly rejected Trump’s confederation peace plan. The majority of Jordan’s population consists of Palestinian Arabs from Judea and Samaria and their descendants.
By contrast, the Hashemite royal family of Jordan hails from Saudi Arabia.
Jordan’s minority Hashemite rulers have been threatened by PA for many years. In 1970, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the predecessor to the PA as the prime Palestinian political institution, tried to topple Jordan’s King Hussein. This resulted in an open military conflict between Jordan and the PLO, which ended with PLO being expelled from Jordan.

As the Hezbollah terror group continues to stockpile rockets in Lebanon and amass forces under the auspices of its benefactor, Iran, Israel publicly unveiled this week a new security structure to protect against threats from the north.
While Israel maintains that the concrete barrier, which measures nine meters tall and stretches across 11 kilometers of the border, complies with relevant laws and reflects the boundaries established by the international armistice line, Lebanon has protested the wall, claiming the structure violates its sovereignty.

By: World Israel News Staff
Incoming and outgoing flights in Israel will be affected by the massive Russian military maneuvers off the Syrian coast, Israel’s Airports Authority cautioned Tuesday.
The Airports Authority informed airlines that due to a Russian military exercise carried out in the eastern part of the Mediterranean basin, there may be changes in the flight routes in the Cyprus area that could affect international flight routes to and from Ben-Gurion International Airport, causing delays in landings and takeoffs, Ynet reported.
Syrian forces have been preparing for an onslaught on the Idlib province in the country, the last rebel stronghold, while the Russian military has been amassing unprecedented forces off the Syrian coast that would lend support to Assad.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced last week that it deployed 25 ships, including a missile cruiser, and 30 jets for the maneuvers.

Minister of Education Naftali Bennett assailed members of the Joint Arab List who penned an op-ed voicing support for UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Corbyn, who continues to censure Israel and take the Palestinian side to the point of paying tribute to terrorists, is accused of anti-Semitism by, among others, senior Israeli politicians and former UK Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks.
On Sunday, the UK’s Guardian published a letter signed by four Arab members of the Israeli parliament expressing support for the embattled leader of the British Labour Party, who has been contending with a series of exposures of his ties with Palestinian terrorists.
“There is no greater hypocrisy than that of Tibi, Zahalka and their supporters,” Bennett said in a statement released Tuesday, referring to MKs Ahmad Tibi and Jamal Zahalka, who signed the letter.

By: World Israel News Staff
Senior Israeli diplomats communicated the nation’s position on a plan that Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas claimed the US floated, which would create a Palestinian confederation with Jordan and possibly Israel.
According to the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli diplomats cited stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to support a directly negotiated agreement with the Palestinians that provides them with a demilitarized entity, referred to at times as a “state minus,” with the Jewish state continuing to oversee security west of the Jordan River.
Abbas raised the confederation proposal during a meeting with leftist activists from the Peace Now organization and Israeli lawmakers in Ramallah on Sunday, claiming that the Trump administration floated the idea during an August 2017 visit by Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner and US special envoy Jason Greenblatt.

By: AP
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who once compared himself favorably to Adolf Hitler, paid a solemn visit to Israel’s national Holocaust memorial on Monday, branding the Nazi leader “insane” as he lamented the genocide of 6 million Jews.
The comments marked a dramatic turnaround for Duterte, who just two years ago had compared his anti-drug campaign to the Holocaust and said he would be “happy to slaughter” 3 million addicts. He later apologized.
Duterte, known for his profane outbursts and accused of committing widespread human rights abuses, spoke quietly and respectfully during his stop at the Yad Vashem memorial. He said the Holocaust should never be repeated and that “despots” have no place in the modern world.
“I could not imagine a country obeying an insane leader, and I could not ever fathom the spectacle of the human being going into a killing spree, murdering old men, women and children. I hope this will not happen again,” he said.

Assad has vowed to defeat the opposition in its last refuge if the rebels do not surrender to government rule and that Syria and Iran held “similar views.”
Iran’s foreign minister said at the start of a visit to Damascus on Monday that “terrorists must be purged” from Syria’s Idlib and the entire northwestern province returned to government control.
Mohammad Javad Zarif’s comments in Damascus were reported by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency and came as Syrian forces and their allies are preparing for an assault on Idlib, the last opposition stronghold in the country.
“Syria’s territorial integrity should be safeguarded and all tribes and groups, as one society, should start the reconstruction process, and the refugees should return to their homes,” Zarif said.

Israel shut down the Erez Crossing into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday after a Palestinian mob violently rioted in the area and destroyed Israeli property the day before. The crossing will be closed until the repairs are completed.
On Tuesday, hundreds of Palestinian rioters on the Gaza side of the crossing threw rocks towards the Israeli side, damaging the crossing area.
“Every day, approximately 1,000 Gazans enter Israel through Erez Crossing to work, study or pray. Yesterday, hundreds of Gazan rioters damaged this same crossing, resulting in its closure for repairs,” the IDF stated.

Vassar College acts against students calling to ‘slap a Zionist’Vassar College (Facebook)
University authorities have put a stop to the distribution of a “Disorientation Guide” for new students advocating BDS and “slapping a Zionist.”
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Administrators at Vassar College, a residential liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York, acted swiftly Friday to stop the further distribution of a self-proclaimed “Disorientation Guide.”
Sent to some 400 incoming students by a group of underclassmen, it contained anti-Semitic content as well as advocating disruptive and borderline legal behavior on campus.
Amanita Duga-Carroll, Vassar Vice President for Communications, said in a statement Monday that after learning of the email, which “was linked to a document on Google that is provocative of violence and anti-Semitism” and targeted many groups, including “Zionists,” the university immediately condemned it and launched an investigation to find those behind it.
“By Saturday morning,” she noted, “we had identified the students believed to be responsible for its creation and distribution and began the student conduct process. We have also worked to stop its distribution on our campus through electronic and print means.”
Among the list of guide-recommended activities to “create a culture of dissonance” – including vandalism of campus property, harassing the college president and hosting a Molotov cocktail-making workshop – was also the suggestion to “slap a Zionist.” In this context, the guide explicitly referred to Ahed Tamimi, a Palestinian teenager who was recently released after several months in prison for kicking and hitting IDF soldiers, as an example to be followed.

UK Labour Party adopts anti-Semitism definition with ‘appalling’ caveat

UK Labour Party adopts anti-Semitism definition with ‘appalling’ caveatActivists react to Labour's new anti-Semitism definition in London. (Stefan Rousseau/PA via AP)
The UK’s Labour Party altered its controversial anti-Semitism definition, while leaving a significant caveat that raised red flags in the UK’s Jewish community.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Britain’s main opposition Labour Party on Tuesday appeared to adopt an internationally recognized definition of anti-Semitism, a move aimed at defusing a crisis that has seen serious accusations of Jew-hatred launched at party members, including its leader Jeremy Corbyn.
After a meeting lasting several hours, Labour’s National Executive Committee backed a definition approved by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, but added what it described as “a statement which ensures this will not in any way undermine freedom of expression on Israel or the rights of Palestinians.”
Among the critics of the party’s failure to adopt the international definition without alterations was Labour Friends of Israel, whose director Jennifer Gerber issued a statement declaring, “It is appalling that the Labour party has once again ignored the view clearly and repeatedly stated by the Jewish community: that it should adopt the full IHRA definition without additions, omissions or caveats.”
“A ‘freedom of expression on Israel’ clause is unnecessary and totally undermines the other examples the party has supposedly just adopted. Labour appears determined to provide a safe space for anti-Semites. This decision is a sad reflection on Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the party and the culture it has instilled,” Gerber explained.
Earlier this year, the party adopted an even more limited definition, omitting some of the alliance’s language around criticism of Israel. The alliance’s definition, for example, says it is anti-Semitic to compare contemporary Israeli policies to the policies of the Nazis. The original Labour definition left that out, but it has now been included.
Labour’s reluctance to adopt the entire definition renewed claims that the left-of-center party has become hostile to Jews under leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose political prospects have recently been damaged by a string of revelations regarding his virulently anti-Israel positions and his participation in events such as a memorial honoring terrorists involved in the Munich massacre.
Religious leaders and certain Labour members accuse Corbyn of failing to stamp out anti-Jewish prejudice.

Iran’s currency falls to lowest rate amid collapse of nuclear deal

Iran’s currency falls to lowest rate amid collapse of nuclear deal(Shutterstock)
Months of uncertainty surrounding the sanctions have already further hurt Iran’s economy and the country’s rial currency continues to tank.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
The Iranian rial has fallen to its lowest rate on record, with the currency now trading at over 150,000 to the US dollar.
Since Saturday, the start of the Iranian working week, the rial has dropped over a quarter of its value.
On Wednesday, the end of the working week, currency exchange shops in Tehran posted rates of over 150,000 rials to $1.
There was no immediate acknowledgement of the drop on state media.
Months of uncertainty surrounding the sanctions have already further hurt Iran’s economy. The country’s rial currency has tanked, and the downturn has sparked protests across the nation.
The collapse of Iran’s currency has been fanned by President Donald Trump’s decision to pull America out of the nuclear deal with world powers in May.
The first set of US sanctions against Iran that had been eased under the controversial nuclear accord went back into effect in August under an executive order signed by Trump, targeting financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran’s automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.

A British watchdog group has launched a judicial review proceedings against the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) after it was blocked from privately prosecuting the leader of last year’s “Al-Quds Day” march in London.
At the June 2017 Iran-backed, pro-Hezbollah event, Nazim Ali allegedly made a number of vehemently anti-Semitic statements over a loudspeaker.
The UK-based Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) subsequently pursued legal action against Ali, but this effort, according to the CAA, was thwarted by the CPS, which took over the case and then dropped it.

A group of Israeli farmers, with the help of Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, is filing a war crimes complaint at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Monday against Hamas over the torching of thousands of acres of farmland in recent months.
The farmers want prosecutors to investigate leaders of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, for issuing orders to Palestinians to breach the territory’s frontier with Israel and having supporters deliberately set fire to fields in southern Israel.
“What they are trying to do is to burn us, not just our fields. It’s a war crime and a crime against humanity,” farmer Ofer Lieberman told Israeli Army Radio ahead of his arrival at The Hague.
Arson attacks have been a nearly daily occurrence since the beginning of Hamas’s “March of Return” campaign in March.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner presented a proposal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to establish a confederation consisting of Jordan and the Palestinian Authority as part of United States President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan, Abbas told a delegation of Israeli lawmakers and Peace Now activists in Ramallah on Sunday.
Abbas was referring to a meeting he attended in August 2017 with Kushner and US special envoy Jason Greenblatt. According to Abbas, he told the Americans that he would agree to a confederation only if Israel were a part of it as well.
“They asked me if I believe in a confederation with Jordan. I said ‘yes, I want a triple confederation with Jordan and with Israel.’ I asked them if Israel would agree to such a proposal,” said Abbas, who accused the United States of being “hostile toward the Palestinians and [putting an end to] the peace process.”

Blasts from area of military airport shake Damascus; Syria denies Israeli airstrike

Blasts from area of military airport shake Damascus; Syria denies Israeli airstrike(Hassan Ammar/AP/File)
Syria denies an Israeli attack after powerful blasts shook the capital, says explosions were caused by a short circuit.
By: AP
A string of powerful blasts from the direction of a military airport in Damascus lit up the skies and shook the capital city in the early morning hours on Sunday, residents and state TV reported.
The explosions were seen and heard coming from the direction of the Mezzeh airport, southwest of the capital. The airport has been targeted in a number of airstrikes in recent years that the government has blamed on Israel.
The state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV station showed what appeared to be hand-held footage shot by residents of the capital capturing a string of bright explosions lighting up the night sky.
The TV station reported, citing an unnamed military source, that the explosions did not come from inside the airport but from a nearby munitions depot. The station said an electrical short circuit was to blame, and reported that emergency services were at the scene.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the explosions came from inside the Mezzeh air base and said they were likely caused by an Israeli missile strike.

On Friday, the US announced it “will not make additional contributions to UNRWA,” the UN Agency that has served Palestinian interests exclusively for the past 70 tears.
By: World Israel News Staff
The US State Department issued a statement on Friday confirming reports that circulated earlier in the week regarding the Trump administration’s intention to cut all funding to UNRWA, the Palestinians’ dedicated United Nations agency.
The cut means that the US will not provide an additional $300 million in funds this year. Until now, the US had furnished close to a third of all UNRWA’s budget.
“When we made a U.S. contribution of $60 million in January, we made it clear that the United States was no longer willing to shoulder the very disproportionate share of the burden of UNRWA’s costs that we had assumed for many years,” explained State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert on Friday.
“[T]he fundamental business model and fiscal practices that have marked UNRWA for years – tied to UNRWA’s endlessly and exponentially expanding community of entitled beneficiaries – is simply unsustainable and has been in crisis mode for many years. The United States will no longer commit further funding to this irredeemably flawed operation,” added Nauert.

“What used to be attacks on buildings or insults thrown in the street has evolved into the most violent acts,” CRIF head Francis Kalifat said.
By: Ben Cohen, The Algemeiner
Anti-Semitism in France has moved “from the streets directly into the homes of Jewish people,” the head of the country’s 465,000-strong Jewish community told The Algemeiner on Wednesday.
“The Jews in France feel threatened in their own homes,” Francis Kalifat — president of CRIF, the French Jewish communal body — said during a discussion of the anti-Semitism that has resulted in several deaths and injuries among French Jews over the past decade.
Kalifat underlined that “what used to be attacks on buildings, or insults thrown in the street, has evolved into the most violent acts.”
In the last eighteen months, two elderly Jewish widows in Paris — Sarah Halimi in April 2017 and Mireille Knoll in March 2018 — have been murdered in brutal anti-Semitic assaults, while several incidents of violent raids on Jewish homes involving gangs of mainly Muslim youths have also been reported.

Israel is determined “to prevent Iran from establishing a military presence in Syria and will not relent…just as we did not relent in bringing about the cancellation of the bad nuclear agreement with Iran,” Netanyahu stated.
By: World Israel News Staff
At the renaming ceremony for the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran that it will not achieve its goal to destroy the Jewish state.
In 2016, shortly after the passing of late Prime Minister Shimon Peres, who had been in charge of the center in the 1950s, Netanyahu announced that he would name the nuclear facility in Dimona after him.
“He was very active in establishing this important project for Israel’s security for generations, and I think that it’s appropriate and right to name the compound after him,” Netanyahu said at the time.
At the ceremony Wednesday, the Israeli leader stressed Israel’s military capabilities, adding that only through strength can peace be achieved and that Peres well understood that reality.

By: World Israel News
On Thursday, the Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump’s administration will make an announcement within the next several weeks that the US is halting all financial support for UNRWA, the United Nations agency created to serve Palestinian interests.
The administration has remained critical of UNRWA, with Trump senior Jared Kushner writing in an email in January, “It is important to have an honest and sincere effort to disrupt UNRWA, … [which] perpetuates a status quo, is corrupt, inefficient and doesn’t help peace,” reported Foreign Policy.
According to Trump administration officials who spoke to the Post on condition of anonymity, UNRWA will need to change both its rules and methods of operation if it seeks any additional funding from the US.

Facing legal action, two Spanish cities reversed “discriminatory” boycott resolutions targeting Israel.
By: Shiri Moshe, The Algemeiner
Two Spanish cities repealed boycott resolutions targeting Israel this month, according to an advocacy group that has called the measures unconstitutional.
Councillors from Villarrobledo in Castile-La Mancha voted last week to scrap a motion passed in April 2017 that declared the city “free of Israeli apartheid,” and extended support to the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign, which seeks to redefine Israel “as a pariah state” until it complies with Palestinian demands.
The repeal — supported by the conservative People’s Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) — came in the wake of a lawsuit filed by the Spanish pro-Israel group ACOM, which warned that the resolution unlawfully discriminated against “any Israeli citizen or company, and any Spanish individual associated with Israel.”
These characterizations were rejected by supporters of the BDS resolution, including councilor Mario de la Ossa from the far-left anti-austerity Podemos party, who first introduced the measure. He was among a group of nine Spanish public officials who traveled to the West Bank last month in a trip organized by the Spanish Network Against the Occupation of Palestine (RESCOP), which sought to bolster support for the BDS’s campaign’s “Spaces Free of Israeli Apartheid” initiative.

Israel vows to confront Iran in Syria with ‘full determination’

In response Iran’s stated determination to remain in Syria, a senior government official announced Israel’s intention to apply pressure, militarily and diplomatically, on the Islamic Republic.
By: World Israel News Staff
After Iran and Syria announced a new military cooperation agreement on Monday, through which Iran will play a leading role in shaping the Syrian military, a senior Israeli official declared Tuesday that the Jewish state is determined to force Iran to retreat.
According to the official, the IDF will “act with full determination against Iran’s attempts to transfer military forces and weapons systems to Syria,” reported Haaretz.
The official also noted that Israel would continue to apply political pressure on Iran through diplomatic channels, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu placing the struggle to push Iran out of Syria near the top of the nation’s list of priorities.
Iran for its part has remained a key ally of Syria’s brutal dictator, Bashar al-Assad, who has managed to maintain his grip on power throughout seven and a half years of bloody civil war. Iran’s support has been indispensable in Assad’s efforts, and in return the Islamic Republic has established a palpable military presence close to Syria’s border with Israel.

Arab MKs who plan to approach the UN to take action against the nation-state law should be tried for treason, Tourism Minister Yariv Levin said on Monday.
By: TPS
Arab Knesset members from the Joint List have joined forces with Palestinian Authority officials by drafting a UN resolution condemning Israel’s nation-state law as well as its claim that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and that the Hebrew calendar is the official calendar of the state. They have also called the law “apartheid.”
In an interview with Army Radio, Tourism Minister Yariv Levin said that there is no way to define this act by the Joint List MKs other than to call it treason.

Shin Bet exposes largely female Hamas terror cell in Hebron

Shin Bet exposes largely female Hamas terror cell in HebronIDF raid in Hebron (Wisam Hashlamoun/Flash90/File)
The Shin Bet uncovered a large-scale Hamas operation in Hebron, the security agency revealed on Tuesday.
The Israel Security Agency – with the assistance of the IDF and the Israel Police – in recent weeks uncovered an extensive Hamas network in Hebron, which included several women who operated in secret at the behest of Hamas command centers abroad and in the Gaza Strip.
The network was used – inter alia – to transfer messages and instructions, transfer funds to finance terrorist operations and coordinate operations with the aforesaid command centers.
The ISA investigation revealed that the network promoted Hamas activity in Hebron, including the recruitment of operatives, coordinating activity at mosques, preaching and increasing support, disseminating online information and incitement and assisting the families of prisoners. The network also tried to take control of municipal activities in Hebron and manage the activities of charitable institutions in the city.
The network was led by Nazar Shehada and Faris Abu Serah, well-known senior Hamas operatives who served various prison sentences for Hamas activities. They used several women who established a central committee to serve as the command center’s operational arm.

A vehicle accelerating towards a group of Israel Defense Forces soldiers outside the city of Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria was fired upon and stopped on Monday before it could cause injuries to troops.
“Tonight, Jewish worshippers entered Joseph’s Tomb in Shechem,” said the army in a statement. “Shortly before their entrance, IDF soldiers came to secure the area. Troops identified a Palestinian vehicle that was aiming at them and fired at them.”
Palestinian media reported that troops had fired on armed Palestinians, with two hospitalized in serious condition. The IDF did not report if the men in the car were armed.

Despite a government ban on providing health care to Hamas family members, the Supreme Court ordered the IDF to admit five close relatives of Hamas terrorists for treament.
By: JNS.org
Israel’s Supreme Court ordered the Israel Defense Forces on Sunday to admit five critically ill women who are close relatives of Hamas terrorists for urgent medical treatment, despite a government ban on providing health care to Hamas relatives.
The women appealed to the Supreme Court last month after Israel rejected their requests for entry.
Israel enacted a policy of denying entry for medical treatment to relatives of Hamas members in order to pressure the group to stop engaging in acts of terror and to release the bodies of two Israeli soldiers who were taken during the 2014 Gaza War as well as two Israeli citizens who are being held captive.
The women were represented by Gisha, an organization that works for Palestinian freedom of movement; Adalah, a Palestinian legal-rights organization; El Meza, a Gaza-based Palestinian-rights organization; and Physicians for Human Rights Israel, a medical-rights organization that asserts its rejection of the “ongoing occupation of the Palestinian Territory.”

A Jewish community in Samaria scored a legal victory on Tuesday with a ruling that could impact thousands of homes in Judea and Samaria.
By: Ebin Sandler, World Israel News
In a major decision for residents of a Jewish community in Samaria, the Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday paved the way to legal status for the homes of around 40 families, and potentially thousands more in similar communities.
The case involves the community of Mitzpe Kramim in the Binaymin Region of Samaria, around 45 minutes from Jerusalem, which sits on the edge of a larger community, Kochav Hashachar, which houses 400 families.
On Tuesday, Judge Arnon Darel ruled that due to Mitzpe Kramim residents’ good faith in establishing their community, and the state’s role helping them to do so, the government cannot force residents to leave their homes.
When Mitzpe Kramim was established in 1999, the residents acquired the land from government authorities, who said that they had the right to transfer the land.

Israel’s increased dealings with Hamas are rooted in a pragmatic policy that prioritizes an attainable truce over an unattainable peace.
By: Daniel Krygier, World Israel News
After many rounds of failed reconciliation talks, the gulf between Fatah and Hamas appears to be growing despite Egypt’s strong efforts to end the dispute between the two political rivals. What does this mean for Israel and the international efforts to solve the seemingly intractable Arab-Israeli conflict?
Israel has for years vowed not to have any dealings with Hamas. While the Islamist organization openly seeks Israel’s destruction, it has also been controlling the volatile Gaza Strip since 2007. These harsh realities on the ground have forced Jerusalem to shed political purity in favor of pragmatism.

“Awhile ago, you heard that we had (recruited) a member of the cabinet of a hostile country,” Alavi said.
By: Yona Schnitzer/TPS
Iran recruited a cabinet member of “hostile government” as an agent, Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said, Iranian media reported Tuesday.
“Thank God, the Intelligence Ministry’s Anti-Espionage Unit is one of the strongest units of the ministry and one of the strongest in intelligence services in the world,” Alavi told the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Tuesday night.
“A while ago, you heard that we had (recruited) a member of the cabinet of a hostile country.”
While Alavi did not specifically state which country, Iranian media outlets are speculating that he was referring to Israel and noted that his comments came four months after the arrest of former Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Gonen Segev, who is currently facing charges of acting as an Iranian agent.
In June, the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency) announced it had arrested Segev a month earlier and that the former minister was being charged with aiding the enemy in time of war and espionage against the state of Israel.

“How dare you tell a Jew that their outrage is ‘patently synthetic’? What other minority would you speak to this way?” the famous author tweeted in reponse to a post slamming British Jews.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
JK Rowling, the billionaire author of the best-selling Harry Potter fantasy series, has taken to Twitter over the past several days to bash a well-published British writer who attacked British Jews over their concerns about anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.
Last month, after continuous scandals concerning racism and anti-Semitism in the party, three British Jewish newspapers published a joint editorial issuing a powerful warning of the “existential” threat that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has compared Israeli policies with Nazism and expressed support for radical Islamists seeking Israel’s destruction, poses to British Jewry.
Simon Maginn, a British author of several comedies and thrillers, criticized Jewish anti-Corbynites who have not accepted the Labor party leader’s various ‘explanations. and ‘clarifications’ of his conduct and comments.
For example, on Sunday, Maginn tweeted, “Explain it to me, then. Explain your deep and wounding sense of injury. Explain the wrong that’s been done to you. Explain your patently synthetic outrage. Explain yourself. Publicly.”

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of John McCain, a great American patriot and a great supporter of Israel,” Netanyahu stated.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Longtime Republican Senator John McCain, 81, died late Saturday night just over a year after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. On Friday, his family announced that he would stop all medical treatment due the progression of the disease and to his advanced age.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led the top political echelon in Israel in mourning the Vietnam War hero as a steadfast friend of Israel.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of John McCain, a great American patriot and a great supporter of Israel. I will always treasure the constant friendship he showed to the people of Israel and to me personally. His support for Israel never wavered. It sprang from his belief in democracy and freedom. The State of Israel salutes John McCain,” he said in statement Sunday morning.
President Reuven Rivlin called McCain “a great leader, a defender of his people, a man of strong values.”
It was those values that inspired him to stand by Israel throughout his career, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) stressed, lamenting that “the pro-Israel community has lost a stalwart friend.”

Iranian defense minister visits Syria to ‘strengthen cooperation’

In what appears to be a show of defiance against the US and Israel, Iranian Minister Hatami is visiting Israel in order to “strengthen cooperation and the axis of resistance.”
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami landed Sunday in Syria for a series of meetings with the country’s top echelon, including President Bashar al Assad, to discuss further strengthening the ties between the two allies.
Joint military actions such as an operation against rebels in the northern Idlib region are on the agenda, as well as the supply of aid to rehabilitate areas already retaken by regime forces, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported.
This two-day visit by a large military delegation follows highly publicized meetings that US National Security Adviser John Bolton held both in Israel and with his Russian counterpart last week on the issue of removing Iranian forces and its proxies from Syria as soon as possible.

Jakiw Palij may have been low down in the hierarchy, but he was present during “a daylong killing spree of unfathomable ruthlessness and horror,” when 6,000 Jewish women, men and children were massacred.
By: Ben Cohen, JNS.org
During my formal interview for US citizenship, not so long ago, I remember the interviewing officer looking me in the eye and asking if I’d ever had any affiliations with the Nazi German regime. “Um, er … no,” I replied, smiling a bit awkwardly. “Y’know, I’ve gotta ask,” she replied, shaking her head gently.
But 70 years ago, that was a deadly serious question—and yet it wasn’t taken very seriously by the authorities. At a time when thousands of Holocaust survivors were denied entry to the United States, thousands of Nazis and their allies—from leading regime scientists to petty (relatively speaking) local collaborators—gained entry to this country.

Leftwing activists instigated violence in Jewish community near Hebron, IDF says
DF sources say the group deliberately instigated a fight with settlers in the South Hebron Hills on the Jewish Sabbath.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A group of six activists from a left-wing organization who came to the religious outpost of Mitzpe Yair on Saturday to photograph what they said was illegal construction got into a fight with some residents and were evacuated by the IDF, which blamed the visitors for the incident.
“This morning, a number of activists from the Ta’ayush organization came to an area where illegal Palestinian construction is taking place near Mitzpe Yair, in the Judean region,” the army’s statement read. “After the construction tools were confiscated [by the authorities], the activists moved toward the village in order to instigate a provocation, and some friction developed between them and the residents. IDF soldiers in the area declared the area a closed military zone to prevent further friction, but some of the activists refused to evacuate and violated the order.”

While Israel is reportedly pressuring Washington to recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, Jerusalem would be better served by creating realities on the ground that keep the Golan under Israeli sovereignty.
By: Daniel Krygier
During a recent visit to Israel, President Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton said that the US is currently not discussing a potential recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. In recent months, the Netanyahu government has reportedly pressured Washington to recognize the Golan as Israeli territory.
After President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, some in Jerusalem see a window of opportunity to extend that recognition to the Golan as well. However, the future of the Golan Heights depends less on declarations from Washington and more on proactive actions from Jerusalem.
The Golan Heights remains a territory of great strategic importance for Israel. Its commanding heights overlook much of northern Israel and Israel’s crucial fresh water supply in the Sea of Galilee is fed with streams originating in the Golan. Israeli forces captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six Day War in 1967.

In a visit that will likely involve discussions on the Iranian nuclear threat, Merkel is scheduled to to visit Israel in early October.
By: World Israel News Staff
German German Chancellor Angela Merkel will make her first visit to Israel in almost four years this October, against a backdrop of uncertainty related to the crumbling 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US was exiting the deal, the European Union and its member states communicated their intent to maintain the nuclear agreement, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized consistently for its failure to staunch the Islamic Republic’s nuclear ambitions or address its regional aggression and control of terror proxies, including Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Countries such as Germany, France and Britain, however, have pledged to keep the deal alive, notwithstanding US sanctions against Iran, a leading state-sponsor or terror, and those who do business with Iranian entities.

Report: Trump to oppose Palestinian ‘Right of Return’

The US leader will officially oppose the Palestinian claim of a “Right of Return” for five million Palestinian “refugees” to the State of Israel.
By: World Israel News Staff
President Donald Trump will announce the US rejection of the Palestinian “Right of Return” in the next several days, Israel’s Hadashot TV reported Saturday.
The Palestinians claim refugee status for five million people, which includes millions of descendants of the approximately 700,000 original refugees who were living in British Mandatory Palestine, or what is now the State of Israel, and were displaced during the 1948 War of Independence.
These descendants of refugees, supported by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA), live in Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
The majority of the original refugees are no longer alive.
“UNRWA is unique in terms of its long-standing commitment to one group of refugees. It has contributed to the welfare and human development of four generations of Palestine refugees, defined as ‘persons whose normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948, and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict.’ The descendants of Palestine refugee males, including legally adopted children, are also eligible for registration,” the Agency states on its website.
The Trump administration has challenged UNRWA’s mandate, suggesting that UN funding instead go to the UN body responsible for all other refugees.

Netanyahu: No urgency for Trump to present peace planPM Benjamin Netanyahu (YouTube/Screenshot)
“It’s his issue if he wants to promote it,” Netanyahu said of Trump’s long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, saying he sees no rush.
By: The Algemeiner
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he saw no pressing need for US President Donald Trump to unveil his long-awaited Middle East peace plan.
“It’s his issue if he wants to promote it,” Netanyahu told reporters during his ongoing visit to Lithuania. “From time to time he says things about it, and it can come, even though I don’t see urgency in this matter.”
Questioned about the Palestinians’ refusal to engage with the Trump administration on the peace issue, Netanyahu stated, “The Americans are thinking about it, they’re not blind, but I don’t know — when they propose it, we’ll see.”
Trump has spoken a number of times of his desire to broker the “deal of the century” between Israel and the Palestinians.
Earlier this week, at a rally in West Virginia, the president said Israel would have to pay a “higher price” in peace talks with the Palestinians due to America’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital last year.

The Israeli prime minister lauded the announcement by major international airlines to cease direct flights to Tehran starting in September.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on a trip Thursday to Lithuania, welcomed the decision by major international airlines to end their direct flights to Iran’s capital of Tehran in September.
The decision by British Airways and Air France came after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal between Iran and began restoring U.S. sanctions. The move has been exacerbating a financial crisis in Iran that has sent its currency tumbling.
British Airways said its last flight to Tehran will be Sept. 22, with the return on Sept. 23, while Air France said it would end flights from Paris to Tehran on Sept. 18.
Netanyahu spoke hours after arriving in Lithuania for a four-day visit in which he will also meet his Latvian and Estonian counterparts.
“That’s good. More should follow, more will follow, because Iran should not be rewarded for its aggression in the region, for its attempts to spread terrorism,” Netanyahu told a news conference.

Palestinian Leaders Fume Over Trump’s Jerusalem Comments

A PLO Executive Committee member lashed out at the US president for claiming that he had taken Jerusalem off the negotiating table.
By: Yona Schnitzer/TPS
Donald Trump’s recent comments on Jerusalem are “worthless,” Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee member Ahmad al-Tamimi said Wednesday in response to remarks by the U.S. President who said that he had taken the capital “off the table.”
Trump’s remarks are “a continuation of US policies in favor of Israel, as well as the American administration’s illusions about the applicability of the so-called deal of the century without recognizing [the eastern portion of] Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state,” al-Tamimi said.
Al-Tamimi reiterated Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ absolute rejection of the American administration’s yet-to-be-submitted peace plan, the so-called “deal of the century,” stating that “absolutely no Palestinian would accept it.”
Former Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat also rejected Trump’s comments, telling the Israel Broadcasting Corporation’s Kan News that as long as Jerusalem remains off the negotiating table, there would be no chance for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Responding to comments by Trump that Israel “would pay a very high price” for his decision earlier this year to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Erekat said the attempt to appease the Palestinians “would not work.”
Trump, Erekat said, is the one that complicated matters by moving the embassy, adding that it would not be realistic to talk about peace without designating the eastern portion of Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. “When someone says to me that Jerusalem is off the table, it’s as if they were telling me that my lungs are being removed from my body, but that I will continue to live a good life,” said Erekat.
“We already recognized Israel’s right to exist within the ‘67 borders with peace and security.

Hard on the heels of news that the Housing Ministry has approved the doubling of a planned neighborhood for Beit El to 650 homes, Kan Israel News reported Wednesday that the Settlement Subcommittee of the Civil Administration approved plans for the construction of only half the number of housing units in Judea and Samaria than had been expected – about 1,000. Moreover, 620 of them will have to undergo additional rounds of permissions before final approval is attained.
In addition, the report said that plans to legalize an outpost in the Gush Etzion bloc and an educational institution’s compound near Kfar Adumim were shelved at the last moment following an order from the political echelon.

Netanyahu became the first Israeli premier to visit Lithuania.
By: World Israel News Staff
On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu  left on a diplomatic visit to Vilnius (Vilna), Lithuania, where he will attend a summit of the Baltic states (B3+1) and will meet with Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas.
The four leaders are slated to discuss deepening cooperation between their countries.
Netanyahu will also meet with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite at the presidential palace.
In this visit, Netanyahu becomes the first sitting Israeli prime minister to visit Lithuania.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Antanas Linkeviciu visited Israel in  September 2017, while President Dalia Grybauskaitė was in Israel in 2015.
Lithuania is considered a very pro-Israel nation that may soon move its embassy to Jerusalem, Israel’s capital.

Israel’s Environmental Protection Ministry is warning Israelis to protect themselves from insect bites after reporting that 67 people have been hospitalized with West Nile virus.
An 18-year-old resident of Israel’s south is in critical condition, with another six people listed in serious condition from the mosquito-transmitted disease.
Tests this week confirmed that some mosquitoes in the coastal areas of Pardes Hannah, Binyamina, Caesarea and the Haifa area ( Menashe Regional Council and Alona Regional Council) were carriers of the virus.
Peak season for the illness in Israel is between August and October, with an incubation period in people of three to 15 days.
Symptoms include fever, rashes and headaches, but complications could also include meningitis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.

Opinion: Plea to Gal Gadot

Opinion: Plea to Gal GadotIsraeli actress Gal Gadot (Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP)
Gal Gadot’s decision to play Lisa Howard, a Jewish-American journalist who became an unabashed apologist for Fidel Castro, should be used as an opportunity to reveal the evil of the Cuban regime.
 By: Henry Roth
I’m not ashamed to admit it: I love Gal Gadot.  A strong, beautiful woman, star of some terrific action movies, a proud Israeli, what’s not to like?  And if I seemed like a giddy fan-boy before, my admiration for Ms. Gadot rose into the stratosphere when I heard that she would be making a film about the life of Hedy Lamarr, a true Jewish heroine.  Ms. Lamarr was a beautiful and successful actress, but more importantly, she was also a brilliant scientist whose discoveries in the area of telecommunications played a vital role in defeating the Nazis.  Truly a fabulous role model for women everywhere and a life worthy of being recorded for posterity.
But just minutes after visiting the tattoo parlor to have her name permanently etched on my body, I learned that Ms. Gadot is also planning to make a film about Lisa Howard, a Jewish-American journalist who became Fidel Castro’s lover and unabashed apologist.
Two thumbs up to Ms. Gadot if she is intending to expose both Ms. Howard’s wilful blindness to Castro’s repressive police state as well as the liberal proclivity to whitewash the crimes of ‘enlightened’ socialist states, but given that Ms. Gadot has been immersed for some time now in the progressive quagmire that is Hollywood, I’m worried that the film will glorify this “complicated, fascinating woman” (Gadot’s own description of Howard).  I suppose the same adjectives could apply to Eva Braun or Tokyo Rose or Aileen Wuornos (you might have to look up that one).

Maas envisions Europe taking a “balanced share of responsibility” and being “a counterbalance when the US crosses red lines.”
By: AP
Germany’s foreign minister is calling for Europe to create a payments system independent of the United States, a move that could help keep alive the nuclear deal with Iran following the withdrawal of the US.
Minister Heiko Maas’ suggestion was part of a wider-ranging piece for Wednesday’s edition of the daily Handelsblatt on Germany’s future strategy toward the US. He said he envisions Europe taking a “balanced share of responsibility” and being “a counterbalance when the US crosses red lines.”
Chancellor Angela Merkel responded cautiously, noting that cooperation with Washington is important in combating terror financing.
Though Maas conceded that the US and Europe have been drifting apart since well before Donald Trump’s presidency, he criticized recent decisions such as Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

While the two victims in a French stabbing attack appear to be the suspect’s mother and sister, ISIS claimed the attack was ideologically motivated.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A man went on a stabbing rampage in the French town of Trappes Thursday morning, leaving two people dead before being neutralized by the police.
The British Daily Express reported a security source saying that the assailant “disappeared into a house when police arrived at the scene, and when he came out he was shot.”
The attacker was said to be in his thirties, and has reportedly been known to the French security services for the last two years. However, the police have so far only said that the motive for the attack was “under investigation.”
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Islamic State issued a statement claiming that one of its members was responsible for the attack, although it provided no proof.
The last knife attack in Paris by an Islamic terrorist occurred just over three months ago. On May 12, a 21-year-old Chechnyan-born French Muslim killed one pedestrian and wounded several others near the Opera House before being gunned down by police. The man, identified as Khamzat Azimov, had been on a counter-terrorism watch list since 2016.

The Samarian town of Beit El will soon include a vastly larger new neighborhood, totaling 650 units instead of the original 300 it was promised six years ago, according to a report in Israel Hayom Tuesday.
The prime minister made an agreement with the town’s leaders in 2012 to compensate them for the demolition of 30 homes when the court ruled that they were built on private Palestinian property. The residents left without putting up the kind of active resistance that has occurred in similar situations.
In a place where not a single house has been built in almost a decade in a de facto building freeze, the building of hundreds of new homes is welcome news.
“This is real news for the residents of Beit El and the entire settlement enterprise,” said Shai Alon, head of the Beit El council. “Because of the stubborn struggle we all waged, the council will grow in the near future with hundreds of housing units and thousands of new residents. It’s a wonderful gift for the new year.”

Israel’s Channel 10 reported that Mahmoud Abbas’ son met with Jason Greenblatt about a year ago, expressing deep doubts about the continued viability of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

According to a report by Israel’s Channel 10 news, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ son, Tareq, met secretly with President Trump’s Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly about one year ago.
Details of the meeting were provided by senior Israeli officials.
During the meeting, Abbas’ son reportedly expressed support for a one-state solution, communicating that a two-solution is simply no longer possible. Instead, he reportedly advocates one-state with equal rights for all, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

The US Justice Department on Monday filed an indictment against two Iranians for spying on Israeli and Jewish targets on Tehran’s behalf.
The indictment charges Ahmadreza Mohammadi-Doostdar, 38, a dual US-Iranian citizen, and Majid Ghorbani, 59, an Iranian citizen and resident of California, with acting on behalf of the Islamic Republic by conducting covert surveillance of Israeli and Jewish facilities in the US.
They are also charged with collecting identifying information about American citizens and US nationals who are members of the group Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK- People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran), an Iranian political organization in exile that advocates the overthrow of the current government in Iran.

With the new guidelines, many more Israelis will be able to carry arms and defend civilians against terrorists.
By: World Israel News Staff
Minister of Interior Security Gilad Erdan approved a plan to increase the number of weapons licenses in Israel through a change in the gun licensing laws that will enable hundreds of thousands of veterans of the IDF’s infantry units to obtain a weapons license.
Erdan signed off on the new guidelines that would allow the number of arms license holders in Israel to significantly increase.
According to the new rules, officers and commanders would not be required to return their weapons upon release from active reserve duty and could request to continue carrying them.
As a result of the new policy, the number of skilled weapons-carriers in the public sphere will increase by over half a million with veterans of the security forces and thousands of volunteers from the Israel Police and rescue organizations.

A senior member of Iran’s leadership, Imam Ahmad Khatami, threatened to attack Israel if the US strikes Iran.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a senior member of Iran’s leadership, warned the United States and Israel that both would pay a “heavy” cost if the US goes to war with his country, reported the Iranian Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday.
Speaking to attendees of a Tehran mosque who were celebrating the Eid al-Adha holiday, the hard-line cleric said, “The costs of a possible US war on Iran will be definitely heavy for Americans, and any aggression against Iran will inflict costs not only on America, but also on its ally, the Zionist regime.”
His remarks come only a day after Iran claimed it revealed its first domestically-produced jet fighter. Shortly after the unveiling, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Arabic spokesman, Ofir Gendelman, tweeted that the jet bore an uncanny resemblance to the US F-5 jet, which was produced in the 1950s.
Iran’s unchecked ballistic missile development program, which it claims it needs for defensive purposes, was one of the top items on the agenda this week in the talks between US National Security Adviser John Bolton and Netanyahu.

“The US embassy ought to be in the capital city of the country which is accredited as the right and natural thing to do, and it’s not an issue of quid pro quo,” Bolton said of the US embassy move to Jerusalem.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
President Donald Trump’s national security adviser says there’s no timetable for releasing the administration’s much-anticipated Mideast peace plan and that the move of the US embassy from to Jerusalem was a principled move that was not made in return for Israeli concessions.
John Bolton said Wednesday in Jerusalem at a press conference to sum up his three-day work visit in Israel that a “lot of progress” has been made, but he refused to speculate what the plan entailed or when it may be publicized. The Trump administration recently began staffing its Mideast policy team ahead of the plan’s expected release.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to have a positive opinion of Israel’s prime minister.
By: World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu viewed favorably among the American public, a new Gallup poll shows.
The poll, published Tuesday, asked Americans how they viewed the leaders of six of the United States’ closest allies.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earned the highest favorable ratings with 48 percent, Great Britain’s Theresa May ranked next with 46 percent, German Chancellor Angela Merkel received 39 percent and Netanyahu came in fourth at 37 percent.
Sadly, between 28 and 35 percent of Americans have never heard of or have no opinion about these leaders.
Netanyahu’s favorable rating is similar to Gallup’s last several results, taken between 1999 and 2015. He was viewed more positively in the US in December 1998 after signing a US-brokered peace treaty with the Palestinians known as the Wye agreement, but quickly returned to the 35 percent range.

Under the leadership of Britain’s opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel has increasingly become mainstream in the UK’s left-leaning Labour party.
By: Daniel Krygier
Britain’s leftist opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has compared Israeli policies with Nazism and expressed support for Islamist radicals seeking Israel’s destruction.
Corbyn is not breaking any new ground with his radical opinions of Israel. Anti-Semitism expressed through anti-Zionism has thrived for decades at the fringes of the political left. However, under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, deep hostility towards the Jewish state has increasingly spread from the fringes to the mainstream left in Britain and in other Western democracies.
Corbyn, who until recently was frequently ridiculed by his political opponents, could potentially become Britain’s next prime minister. What does the rise of Corbyn mean for future British-Israeli relations and the Jewish people?

A ceremony at Israel’s newest medical school on Sunday was attended by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Education Minister Naftali Bennett and Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, as well as backers of the school American Jewish billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson.
Ariel University, home to the new medical school, has faced serious attack by the BDS movement, which has attempted to get the university and its academic staff boycotted in institutions of higher education around the world.
“When others rolled their eyes, you all built,” said Rivlin at the ceremony. “When others boycotted, you proved that an excellent academy could be established here—an academy that has room for every student, regardless of race, color, religion or gender.”
Ariel University has been the subject of multiple boycotts by academics, including by dozens of radical-left Israelis, because of its location.

Opinion: ‘Fauda’ and the two-state scenario

Opinion: ‘Fauda’ and the two-state scenarioPresident Reuven Rivlin poses with the stars of the hit Israeli series Fauda. (Mark Neyman/GPO).
The obstacle to peace remains Palestinian ideology, not how many settlers can be evicted from their homes.
By: Jonathan S. Tobin, JNS.org
In the international hit Israeli TV series “Fauda,” the head of the Palestinian Authority security service is a fictional character named Abu Maher. Played by Qader Harini, an Arab actor from eastern Jerusalem, Abu Maher is reconciled to peace and coexistence, and therefore willing to cooperate with the Israelis to combat Islamist terror.
In an episode of the show’s second season (this is not a spoiler for the main plot line, so you can keep reading even if you haven’t watched the series), Abu Maher takes his son—a student who sympathizes with Hamas—to lunch on the Jaffa beach inside Israel. He tells the youngster to look at the skyscrapers of neighboring Tel Aviv. Those mighty buildings and the industry, creativity, power and wealth they represent, he says, show the permanence of Israel. The Jews are interested in life rather than death, and since they can’t be defeated, Abu Maher believes that the Palestinians must choose peace.
I’m sure I’m far from the only audience member who saw that scene and pondered what life would be like if the actual head of the P.A. was someone like the fictional Abu Maher, instead of Mahmoud Abbas or the other real-life Fatah functionaries who are still fixated on the century-old war against Zionism (in which they have yet to admit defeat). With such a person leading the Palestinians, a two-state solution might indeed be possible.

Another day, another “we’ve got him now. No, really, we’ve really, truly, madly, deeply got him, now!” series of headlines from the establishment media about President Donald Trump.
This time the focus is on campaign finance.
And once again, voters are left to their own devices to figure out what the truth really is and if there actually is a crime involved. Add to that the way the establishment media addressed the topic when President Barack Obama was involved in similar “scandals,” and you have more evidence as to why the establishment media outlets are so often called “fake news.”

Abbas calls to step up ‘popular resistance’ against Israel
 August 19, 2018
Abbas calls to step up ‘popular resistance’ against Israel Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas (AP/Majdi Mohammed)
Palestinians must “keep the ground aflame with popular resistance” against Israel, Abbas stated.
By: World Israel News Staff
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said that “popular resistance” should be the only means of struggle towards independence and statehood.
“Popular resistance” usually indicates the use of rocks and firebombs against Israelis rather than more advanced weapons, such as guns.
Speaking during the closing session of the 29th meeting of the Palestinian Central Council (PCC) held on Friday in Ramallah, Abbas said that the Palestinians “should not underestimate it [popular resistance]” and must “keep the ground aflame with popular resistance” against Israel.
He called for further visits to the illegally built Beduin village of Khan al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem, which is facing a court-ordered demolition by Israel.
“Everyone, officials and the public, should be going to Khan al-Ahmar. Our goal now must be to stay there and not allow them [the Israelis] to set up their project, because we know that they will tear apart the West Bank if they take over that area. This is a critical issue that we must keep in mind,” he stated, according to the official Palestinian WAFA news agency.
The location of the illegal structures is hazardous due to its proximity to a major highway. Khan al Ahmar is adjacent and overlooking the highway that connects Jerusalem to the south of Israel in a strategic area that bisects the country.
The residents, the Jahalin Bedouin, are an offshoot of a larger tribe based in southern Israel in the Arad region. After a blood feud broke out within the tribe, some of the families were forced out and migrated north through the Judean desert, arriving and settling in their present location after the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Their battle for the land is part of a PA and European Union-orchestrated program of creating strategically located outposts that undermine the basis of the Oslo Accords.
By creating “placeholder” encampments in strategic points throughout Area C of Judea and Samaria, the PA has circumvented the process of negotiation.

By: World Israel News Staff
Hundreds of residents of communities surrounding the Gaza Strip protested Saturday night at Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square regarding the ongoing Hamas-led rocket and arson attacks against Israel’s south.
Demonstrators marched with signs reading, “We are not cannon fodder,” “Our children’s childhood has been stolen,” and “Wake up, the entire south is burning,” demanding the government act to ensure their security.
The protesters launched fake incendiary balloons, sounded a siren and lay down on the ground, showing how they have been living under continuous attack from Gaza.
Over the course of the past four months, Hamas terrorists have launched thousands of incendiary devices into Israeli territory, resulting in the destruction of more than 7,400 acres of land, hundreds of acres of wheat fields and 2,700 acres of protected nature reserves.
Over 1,000 incendiary devices were sent across the border, leading to more than 750 fires –an average of 11 per day. Not only has the cost of damage exceeded $3 million, but it will take years to reverse the ecological damage caused by Hamas.
Also in recent months, Hamas terrorists have launched hundreds of rockets and mortars and communities surrounding the Strip.

Israeli Police: Shooting of Jerusalem stabber justified, prevented further casualties; Family: ‘Too quick on the trigger’

The Israeli Police ardently defended their officers for shooting an Israeli-Arab man who attempted to attack them in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Ahmad Muhammad Mahamid from the northern Israeli town of Umm al-Fahm tried to stab a policeman on Friday before being shot dead.
His family later revealed that he was mentally ill and criticized the police for using lethal force in response to the attack.
The police do not agree with this assessment. According to Israel’s Channel Two, a top police source said, “No one could expect the officers to know that the terrorist attacking them with a knife was mentally ill.”
He also emphasized that a preliminary investigation into the incident showed that the officers reacted swiftly and correctly, thus preventing further casualties.

By: World Israel News Staff
The relationship between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Egypt is “very tense” in light of PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ rejection of a possible truce between Hamas and Israel that Egypt has been mediating.
Israel and Hamas are reportedly on the brink of signing a year-long ceasefire.
An Egyptian security source said he expects the agreement will be announced next week after the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.
The Arabic language daily al-Hayat reported Sunday that the majority of Palestinian factions in Cairo have agreed to a ceasefire with Israel, while Fatah has so far rejected it.
The Palestinian Central Council (PCC), at the end of its meetings in Ramallah on Friday night, said that a truce with Israel is “a national responsibility of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and not an action for the factions [from Gaza].”

As attempts to reach a lasting ceasefire continue, Israel decided Sunday to close the Erez crossing to Gaza after rioting on the border Friday.
By: AP
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman annouced Sunday the closing of the Erez border crossing, Israel’s main personnel crossing with Gaza in response to recent violence along the frontier.
Two Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and another 60 were wounded during violent protests Friday amid ongoing Egyptian efforts to broker a ceasefire. The protesters threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops from behind clouds of black smoke from burning tires. The soldiers responded with tear gas and live fire.
Hamas officials have been meeting with Egyptian officials in Cairo to hammer out details of a possible truce with Israel. The sides have come close to serious conflict in recent weeks, as terrorists have fired rockets at Israel, which has responded with airstrikes.

An Israeli company has received FDA approval for a treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has permitted marketing of the BrainsWay Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation System for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder after reviewing data from a multicenter study.
Brainsway, an Israeli company that specializes in developing and providing advanced technology solutions for the treatment of a variety of brain disorders, explained that the treatment performs magnetic stimulation of the brain’s frontal lobe and its networks, targeting previously unreachable areas of the brain using its helmet-like device, which allows it to effectively treat OCD, as well as other disorders including schizophrenia and depression.
OCD is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors they feel the urge to repeat certain actions and behaviors over and over.

Israel slams UN chief for advocating armed UN force to protect Palestinians

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon denounced Guterres’ suggestion that the UN should create an armed military force for the Palestinians’ benefit.
By: AP
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a new report that options for protecting Palestinian civilians range from establishing an armed military or police force to deploying civilian observers or beefing up the U.N. presence on the ground.
The U.N. chief stressed in the report circulated Friday evening that every option would require the cooperation of Israelis and Palestinians, “a sustained cessation of hostilities and additional resources.”
But the prospect of getting Israel’s consent, especially for a U.N. or non-U.N. armed force, remains highly unlikely.
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon responded to the report by saying that “the only protection the Palestinian people need is from their own leadership.”
The Palestinian Authority “incites its people to demonize and attack Jews, and Hamas, a terrorist organization, exploits those under its control by intentionally putting them in harms way,” Danon said.

US announces creation of Iran Action Group to maximize pressure on regime

“The creation of the Iran Action Group indicates that the Trump administration seeks to mobilize all of Washington’s institutional resources to advance its maximum pressure campaign against the regime in Iran,” says analyst Tzvi Kahn.
By: Jackson Richman/JNS.org
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Thursday the founding of the Iran Action Group, which will “be responsible for directing, reviewing and coordinating all aspects of the State Department’s Iran-related activity.”
“For nearly 40 years, the regime in Tehran has been responsible for a torrent of violent and destabilizing behavior against the United States, our allies, our partners, and indeed, the Iranian people themselves,” said Pompeo.
“Our hope is that one day soon we can reach a new agreement with Iran. But we must see major changes in the regime’s behavior, both inside and outside of its borders. The Iranian people and the world are demanding that Iran finally act like a normal nation.”
He added that “the Iran Action Group will drive daily progress on these objectives and I hope do much more.”
Benham Ben Taleblu, an Iran analyst with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), told JNS that he views the creation of the group as a positive sign that the United States is prioritizing the Iran issue.
“The need for an Iran action group—or any entity specializing in streamlining, coordinating and implementing Iran policy—is due to the challenge of balancing the myriad threats posed by the Islamic Republic, as well as the attention the president and other administration officials have rightly given to that threat,” explained Taleblu.

“I want you to know that the people of Israel admire you and are proud of you for having chosen to serve in the IDF and fight to defend our home,” the prime minister’s wife stated.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife Sara attended the annual event for Garin Tzabar in honor of approximately 300 new immigrants who will enlist in the IDF as lone soldiers – those who have no immediate family in the country – in the framework of Garin Tzabar Scouts and the Israel Scouts Tzofim Itanu program.
Members of Garin Tzabar are children of Israelis, ages 18-23, residing overseas, who choose to return to Israel in order to serve a full period of IDF service. Among them, the Tzofim Itanu members also plan to make Israel their home. Upon arrival in Israel, the group is adopted by an Israeli community in a kibbutz or a city that becomes their home away from home throughout the duration of their army service.
The event took place Thursday evening at Tel Aviv University.
“I am pleased to come here every year. Each time, like today, I am excited to welcome with a warm embrace hundreds of new immigrants who have come here in the framework of Garin Tzabar,” Ms. Netanyahu told the assembled.
“Welcome home. Welcome to Israel, the home of every Jew in the world, the home of us all,” she stated.

New details about the ceasefire purportedly agreed upon by Israel and Hamas were revealed in a Lebanese report.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
New details emerged from the Lebanese Al Mayadeen news channel Thursday regarding the alleged ceasefire agreement being formulated between Israel and Hamas.
According to the Lebanese report, Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, would stop hostilities for a year while Israel would organize a sea route from Cyprus to Gaza under Israeli security control.
The Hezbollah-affiliated channel added that Qatar had agreed to help the Islamist government financially by paying its electric bills as well as Gaza officials’ salaries, which together make up a large portion of Hamas’ running expenses.
The UK-based Al-Hayat newspaper cited an unnamed Palestinian official as saying that the deal could be signed as early as Friday.

Israel has discovered that the EU is working on a massive transportation program for the Palestinians, including in Area C, without consulting Israel.
By: World Israel News Staff
The European Union (EU) is working on plans to construct a massive transportation grid connecting the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian Authority (PA)-administered territories in Judea and Samaria, but has not informed Israel.
Israel Radio reported Wednesday that in a discussion held two days ago in one of the subcommittees of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee headed by MK Moti Yogev, it was revealed that the EU had formulated a plan for the establishment of huge infrastructures, including in Area C, which is under full Israeli control.
According to the plan, airports and seaports will be established, and an extensive network of railways and roads will connect all parts of Judea and Samaria with the Gaza Strip.
