Rudy Giuliani, US President Donald Trump’s lawyer, told Palestinian Media Watch last week that the Palestinian Authority is a “murder machine” and that America should stop providing it with funds.
By: World Israel News Staff
Rudy Giuliani, US President Donald Trump’s lawyer, said last week that if the American government cares about the lives of its citizens, it will stop supporting a “murder machine, which is what the Palestinian Authority (PA) has become.”
In an interview with Palestinian Media Watch during a visit to Israel, Giuliani said the US should not give the PA any money and not just restrict the use of money, “because money is fungible.”
“So if they get money for one purpose,” Giuliani said, “they just don’t use it for that purpose and they move it over to paying terrorists for killing Americans, because many of these terrorists have killed Americans as well as Israelis and citizens of other countries.”

Israel’s Arab citizens, who make up a fifth of the population, are involved in 95.2 percent of all shootings in the country, according to a report by Israeli news site Hadashot, based on police data.
Israel’s Arabs are also involved in 76 percent of all cases of illegal weapons possession.

The IDF launched a massive surprise drill in the north of the country as tensions on the border with Syria run high.
By: World Israel News Staff
The IDF launched a massive surprise drill on Sunday in the Golan Heights as tensions on the border with Syria have increased dramatically.
An IDF spokesman announced that the drill will last several days, explosions will be heard and military traffic, including troops and hardware, will be visible.
The exercise also entails a broad call-up of IDF reserves.
The spokesman emphasized that the drill was planned ahead as part of the IDF’s annual training schedule. It is not a response to any specific event, he said.
The drill was launched as tensions on Israel’s border with Syria, adjacent to the Israeli Golan Heights, are the highest in decades.
Last month, Iran’s Quds forces launched a barrage of rockets at IDF bases on the Golan Heights in northern Israel, the first Iranian attack on Israeli soil in history.
Shortly after midnight, IDF defense systems identified approximately 20 rockets that the Iranian Quds forces had launched at IDF forward posts on the Golan Heights. The majority of the rockets missed their mark and fell in Syrian territory, while four were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

IDF forces employed riot control tactics on Saturday to control rioters along the Gaza border who ignited tires, rolling them in the soldiers’ direction, threw stones, and launched incendiary kites and balloons.
A hand grenade and a pipe bomb were also thrown at IDF forces, as well as a kite carrying explosives, which detonated in mid-air.
In total, around 20 fires were caused by firebomb-equipped kites and balloons from Gaza between Friday night and Saturday alone, reported Arutz 7. Affected communities included Kibbutz Nir Am, Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, and Sderot.
An Israeli soldier was wounded by a friendly fire bullet ricochet, and was evacuated to Soroka Medical Center with injuries to his neck and face.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 47 Palestinians were wounded by IDF bullet fire. Five were reported to be in serious condition.
On Thursday, IDF Jets dropped flyers on Gaza Thursday, warning citizens not to attempt to storm or damage the border fence on Friday, a designated by Hamas for rioting.

By: World Israel News Staff
Israeli aircraft on Saturday launched an attack on Gazans preparing incendiary balloons as part of the Hamas-led March of Return protests along the border with Israel.
Since March, Palestinians have sent kites and balloons with flaming materials into Israeli territory, setting hundreds of blazes that have destroyed Israeli fields and nature reserves to the tune of around NIS 5 million.
According to Israel Radio, one of the kites on Saturday carried an explosive device, which sappers detonated. The police subsequently isued a warning to the Israeli public not to approach downed kites or balloons.
“We view the use of incendiary balloons and kites very seriously and will continue to act to prevent their use,” announced the army after the “warning shot” was launched.

According to a Hebrew media source, the Iranian government distributed funds to the families of individuals killed during the violent, Hamas-led riots that began in March.
By: World Israel News Staff

A recent report by Israel’s Reshet Bet revealed that the families of Gazans killed during riots along the Israeli security border received $500 each from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The money was reportedly doled out by Hamas during a Ramadan “break fast” meal held on Thursday evening to honor families of “martyrs.”
A recent study analyzing the casualties revealed that the vast majority of those killed in the rioting were connected to Hamas or other terrorist organizations operating in the coastal enclave.
While the riots were presented as spontaneous, peaceful demonstrations under the “March of Return” banner, mounting evidence demonstrates they were in fact Hamas-orchestrated operations designed to provide civilian cover to military operatives attempting to breach Israel’s border.
For example, after a 22-year-old female medic was killed during the riots last week, a video surfaced in which she referred to herself as “human shield,” contradicting initial reports portraying her as an innocent healthcare worker.
Iran provides funding, weapons and training to Hamas, which designated Iran’s annual anti-Israel “Quds Day,” which falls on Friday, as a date for more rioting along the Gaza-Israel border.

In a meeting in China, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani raised the situation following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iranian deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at the start of his Saturday’s meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao, China, Rouhani hailed close ties between Russia and Iran. Iran has an observer status in the SCO, and Putin said that Moscow would support the full-fledged Iranian membership.
Rouhani said that the U.S. exit from the nuclear agreement with Iran warrants an “important and serious discussion between our two countries.”
Rouhani also hailed Russia-Iran cooperation in Syria, saying “our role in the region is quite significant.” Russia and Iran have staunchly backed Syrian President Bashar Assad, helping turn the tide of war in his favor.

Israel “must be ready for escalation” on the Gaza border said the outgoing head of the IDF Southern Command.
By: World Israel News Staff
Outgoing head of IDF Southern Command (Maj.-Gen.) Eyal Zamir said Wednesday that Israel “must be prepared for escalation” on the Gaza border, and needs to “draw conclusions and find a suitable solution for kite terrorism as well.”
“The threat is not over and we need to intensify the efforts,” Zamir said at a change-of-command ceremony at the Southern Command, reported Ynet.
“The terror pattern of operations on the Gaza border will be defeated with determination,” Maj. Gen. Zamir added. “If required, we will use our full force.”
He argued that “calm is primarily in the interest of the Strip’s residents, who are suffering under the Hamas rule.”
Zamir also had a message to “all of those elements trying to delegitimize us—we’ll continue operating, whether you like it or not.”
Also speaking at the ceremony, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said the army was “dealing with a wide variety of terror attacks” from the Gaza Strip, noting that the Israeli military “must find solutions to any kind of threat.”
Eisenkot went on to say that “some four years after Protective Edge, the mission hasn’t been completed. It will only be completed after the return of Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul for burial in Israel.”

“You’ve got to change the dynamic and put the pressure on them,” Giuliani said of the Palestinians’ aversion to peace talks with Israel.
By: AP and World Israel News Staff
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani lauded President Donald Trump’s tough line that forced the North Korean leader to beg to reschedule a high-profile summit.
Trump had abruptly called off the meeting and appeared to suggest that similar tactics were required to force the Palestinians back to the negotiations table with Israel.
Speaking at the Globes capital market conference in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Giuliani said high-pressure tactics should be used with the Palestinian Authority (PA), whicg cut off ties with the US following Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“They have to be seeking peace. You’ve got to change the dynamic and put the pressure on them,” Giuliani said.
Of North Korea, Giuliani said that following Trump’s tough stance, “Kim Jong Un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it [the summit wit Trump], which is exactly the position you want to put him in.”

Obama secretly sought to give Iran access to US financial system

Obama secretly sought to give Iran access to US financial systemFormer US President Barack Obama (L) and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (AP)
The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access — albeit briefly — to the US financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so.
By: Josh Lederman and Matthew Lee, AP
An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the signing of the Iran nuclear deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deal’s opponents. Amid a tense political climate, Iran hawks in the US, Israel and elsewhere argued that the United States was giving far too much to Tehran and that the windfall would be used to fund extremism and other troubling Iranian activity.
The report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations revealed that under President Barack Obama, the Treasury Department issued a license in February 2016, never previously disclosed, that would have allowed Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman from Omani rials into euros by exchanging them first into US dollars. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the US financial system.

New plan pushed to quintuple Jewish population in Golan Heights

With Israeli sovereignty over its portions of the Golan Heights more solid than ever, the government wants to increase the Jewish population there fivefold.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Deputy Minister Michael Oren has a plan to quintuple the Jewish population in the Golan Heights, and on Wednesday his party head, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, came on board.
Syria’s disintegration has largely eliminated the possibility of Israel returning land in the Golan to the Assad regime, once considered a real option.
“The missed opportunity in the Golan is not only demographic but also a security danger,” Oren said.
“Iran is trying to replace the Sunni population near the border with Shi’ite forces to build a base in Syria and make the Golan a conflict zone with Israel. We must take advantage of this window of opportunity,” he added.

IDF: Killed Palestinian medic was ‘no angel of mercy’

“Do medics in other countries throw bombs and participate in riots and refer to themselves as human shields?” an IDF spokesperson said regarding the shooting death of a Palestinian nurse.
By: World Israel News Staff
The IDF’s Arabic spokesperson commented on the death of a female Palestinian medic shot last Friday during the Hamas-led riots near the security fence at the Israel-Gaza border, saying she was “no angel of mercy.”
The IDF released a video showing her throwing a smoke grenade toward Israeli forces securing the border while wearing her medic uniform.
“Razan al-Najjar is not the angel of mercy Hamas propaganda is making her out to be,” the IDF’s Avichay Adraee tweeted Thursday, Times of Israel reported.
Adraee accompanied his tweet with a clip showing Najaar’s activities on several occasions during the recent Gaza border riots.
In one segment, she is seen giving a media interview in which she explicitly states her commitment to serve as “a human shield” for the Palestinian rioters.

Expecting a renewal of rioting on Friday along the Gaza border fence, IDF planes dropped leaflets warning Gaza’s residents not to test Israel’s resolve.
By: World Israel News Staff
IDF aircraft dropped leaflets, ahead of Friday’s planned protests, warning Gaza residents against approaching the border fence and attempts at sabotage and terrorism, according to the IDF spokesperson’s unit.
In the leaflets, distributed Thursday, the IDF called on Gazans to abstain from being pawns at the hands of Hamas. “For your own benefit, you are better off not taking part in the violent riots on the fence and not to cross the border.”
This week marks the 51st anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War. But for Palestinians it is a day of sadness.
The annual commemoration, known as “Naksa” in Arabic, or setback, is usually marked by rallies, protests and often confrontations between Palestinians and IDF troops in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.
Tuesday, which officially marked Naksa Day, came and went with few incidents.
Officials in Israel had feared the commemoration could see a return to violent protests on the Gaza border, though military officials now believe Gazans will wait until Friday, when major  protests have been held to mark Quds Day, the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

The American secretary of state reacted firmly to the Iranian threat to increase its uranium enrichment capacity.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a one-word message for the Islamic Republic on Thursday after the head of Iran’s atomic agency said it was preparing to create weapons-grade uranium: Don’t.
“We’re watching reports that Iran plans to increase its enrichment capacity,” the secretary of state tweeted. “We won’t allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. Iran is aware of our resolve.”
The war of words has steadily become more aggressive between the two countries after US President Donald Trump walked away from  the 2015 nuclear deal last month, restoring economic sanctions on Iran that will be enforced in the coming months.
Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, told reporters on Tuesday that if the nuclear agreement falls apart, despite the other signatories’ desire for it to continue, the new centrifuges would be ready “in the coming weeks and months.”

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called on Israel Wednesday “to carry out a transparent, independent inquiry” into the circumstances leading to the deaths of about 120 Palestinians and injuries to thousands of others.
“We continue to press both Israel and the Palestinian Authority on the need to refrain from actions which make peace more difficult,” Johnson said.

Senior Russian officials arrived in the Jewish State on Wednesday to discuss distancing Iranian forces from the Syrian-Israeli border.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
A group of high-level Russian officials, including at least one senior intelligence officer, arrived in Israel Wednesday to continue a months-long dialogue on concerns regarding Iran’s presence in Syria, in addition to discussing the terror threat in the Middle East in general.
The delegation spoke with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and is expected to meet other defense officials and IDF officers as well during their visit. The most crucial topic under discussion is Israel’s demand to that Iran and its military proxies move at least 60-70 kilometers away from the border area.
The Russian visit follows hard on the heels of Liberman’s quick trip to Moscow last week to speak to his counterpart, Sergei Shoygu, on the same subject.

US envoy to media: ‘Keep your mouths shut’ on Israel’s response in Gaza
 June 4, 2018
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman slammed the news media, telling them to “keep your mouths shut” until they have a better solution to the violent rioting along the Gaza border fence.
By: World Israel News Staff
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said Monday that the media should either figure out a better way to deal with the border protests or stop its negative coverage of the Jewish state.
Addressing a media conference in Jerusalem, Friedman said that news outlets have been unfair in their coverage of the deadly protests on the Gaza border over the past few months.
He advised reporters to “keep your mouths shut” unless they know better than Israel how to deal with the demonstrations.
Some criticism of Israel may be legitimate, Friedman allowed, although journalists should have worked harder to find alternatives to Israel’s use of lethal force, which has left scores of Palestinians dead, before accusing the state of wrongdoing.

Ahead of a Knesset discussion Monday on the situation in the Gaza Strip, it emerged that Israel has allowed over 6,000 Gazans to enter Israel to receive medical care over the past four months.
Meirav Ben-Ari, a Member of Knesset from the Kulanu party, said that according to data provided to her by the IDF, over 5,000 Gaza residents were allowed through the Erez Crossing that separates southern Israel from Gaza in order to receive medical treatment in Israeli hospitals.
Nearly 1,000 more were permitted to enter Israel in order to reach the Palestinian-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria.
The Knesset discussion, taking place during a meeting of the Committee for the Advancement of Women, was originally slated to focus on Gaza women’s suffering. It was arranged by Aida Touma Sliman, a Knesset member from the Arab Joint List Party’s Hadash communist faction.

Netanyahu: Only two issues on agenda during trip to Europe, ‘Iran and Iran’Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Marc Israel Sellem/POOL)
“I will meet with three leaders and I will raise two issues there: Iran and Iran,” Netanyahu stated upon leaving for Europe.
By: World Israel News Staff
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left on Monday for a round of diplomatic meetings in Berlin, Paris and London with the future of the Iran nuclear deal in focus.
The Israeli premier will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday and British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday.
In London, Netanyahu will also hold discussions with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and members of Parliament.
Prior to boarding his flight, Netanyahu said he was “leaving on an important visit to Europe. I will meet with three leaders and I will raise two issues there: Iran and Iran.”
He stressed the necessity to “continue the pressure on Iran against its nuclear program.”
“I believe that this pressure should be increased. It could be that there is not full agreement on this at the moment but in my opinion, such an understanding will take shape,” he stated.
Another issue Netanyahu will raise with the European leaders is “blocking Iran’s aggression in the region, especially its attempts to establish a military presence against us in Syria and attack us from there.”
“On this issue I hope to form an agreed-upon policy,” he stated.

The Europeans have been struggling to salvage the nuclear deal since US President Donald Trump’s announcement last month that the US is withdrawing from the pact.
Israel is hoping that the American withdrawal will lead the European leaders to address the deal’s shortcomings, including “sunset” provisions that end restrictions on Iranian nuclear activities in less than a decade as well as permitting Iran to continue developing log-range missiles that could eventually deliver nuclear warheads to targets around the globe.
Netanyahu last week spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and American Secretary of State Pompeo about Iran’s military buildup in Syria.
Israel has long been concerned about the Iranian military buildup in Syria and views it as a severe threat to its security.
“These are meetings with three very important leaders in Europe. I think that it is a good thing that I have a very personal, close and very good connection with them. This is important for the State of Israel,” Netanyahu underscored.

An armed terrorist was killed as IDF forces clashed with Palestinians at the Israel-Gaza border.
By: World Israel News Staff
IDF troops stationed on the border with Gaza on Monday stopped two terrorists who attempted to infiltrate Israeli territory while armed with an ax.
Identifying the infiltration attempt, IDF troops arrived at the scene and fired at the assailants, killing one of them. The other terrorist was wounded but managed to return to Gaza.
IDF forces scanned the area and searched for explosives the terrorists may have left behind.
Palestinian sources identified the dead terrorist as Ramzi Najjar of Khan Younis.
On Sunday night, IDF forces stationed near the border discovered an explosive device connected to a “Molotov kite” that flew in from the Strip. The explosive charge, found near Kerem Shalom, was safely dismantled.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, speaking Monday in his capacity as head of the Yisrael Beytenu party, criticized his fellow lawmakers in the Knesset for not jumping aboard his party’s attempt to impeach Joint List Member of Knesset (MK) Hanin Zoabi for her support of terrorism against the Jewish state.
“The terrorist Hanin Zoabi is in the Knesset and promotes terror against IDF soldiers and the country’s citizens only because MKs from the Zionist Union, Yesh Atid and the ultra-Orthodox parties refuse to sign on [Yisrael Beytenu] MK Oded Forer’s petition to oust her according to the law,” he charged.

A statement about stepped-up uranium enrichment by Iran’s supreme leader was “a sign of the hysteria and panic in the Iranian leadership,” says Israel’s defense minister.
By: World Israel News Staff
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said an announcement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that the Islamic Republic will increase its uranium enrichment is “a sign of the hysteria and panic in the Iranian leadership.”
Speaking at a conference of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Eilat on Tuesday, Liberman said that the new Iranian threat is “a response to [French car manufacturer] Peugeot’s announcement that it is suspending its activity in Tehran.”
Peugeot announced Monday that it will cease its activities in the Islamic Republic in August.
“When such a corporation announces that it is leaving Iran because of the sanctions, it’s a sort of signal to the entire business community, to all the investors, and this is not a marginal company. This company is one of the pillars of the European economy, so Iran is afraid that all European investors will leave its territory,” Liberman explained.
He added that Iran’s belligerence is “not an Israeli problem” solely, but a regional and global menace.
“We see Iranian subversion not only against the State of Israel. We see them in Yemen, in Bahrain, in the Gulf, in Lebanon, so it’s a regional threat…

Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency, said Tuesday that in recent weeks it thwarted a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A resident of a Palestinian refugee camp in east Jerusalem is among those in custody for his involvement in the plot, orchestrated from Syria, to harm Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, the Shin Bet said.
The security agency arrested Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, born in 1988, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp who holds an Israeli ID card and was previously imprisoned for terrorist offenses.

Israel in, China out for world’s largest naval exercise in Hawaii

The US Navy said it rescinded its invitation to China but for the first time invited Israel, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Brazil to participate in a huge naval exercise in Hawaii.
By: World Israel News Staff
China is out, but Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Israel are in for the first time in this summer’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercise in Hawaii.
The US Navy announced at the end of May that 26 nations, 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate in the biennial RIMPAC being held June 27 to Aug. 2, according to the American internet site Stars and Stripes.
The US rescinded its invitation to RIMPAC for China, which had participated in 2014 and 2016, bringing several ships and personnel.
China was uninvited due to its ongoing militarization of the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
This would mark the first time Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Israel have joined the drills, the Navy said.
The biennial RIMPAC multinational maritime event is led by the US 3rd fleet off the coast of Hawaii and southern California.
With the theme of RIMPAC 2018 being “Capable Adaptive Partners,” the drill will work to increase multinational cooperation and trust as well as enhance interoperability of troops

German politician: Nazi era a ‘speck of bird poop’ in German history
 June 3, 2018
“Hitler and the Nazis are just a speck of bird poop in more than 1,000 years of successful German history,” co-leader of Germany’s far-right AfD said.
By: AP
The co-leader of the far-right nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on Saturday dismissed the Nazi era as a “speck of bird poop” in German history, drawing swift condemnation from mainstream politicians and outrage on social media.
Alexander Gauland said Germans must take responsibility for 12 years of rule by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party, but argued that it’s only a small part of Germany’s history.
“We have a glorious history and it, dear friends, lasted longer than those blasted 12 years,” he told a gathering of the party’s youth movement, according to the dpa news agency.
“Hitler and the Nazis are just a speck of bird poop in more than 1,000 years of successful German history,” he said to applause.
The party, known by its German acronym AfD, became the third largest in Germany’s parliament after the 2017 election. It is also the largest opposition party.

New York City’s police said there will be bomb-sniffing dogs, sharpshooters on rooftops and radiation detection devices to protect the annual parade along Fifth Avenue.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
The New York City Police Department is taking no chances with a parade celebrating Israel’s 70th anniversary in light of tensions overseas.
Police say there were no specific threats against the parade that starts at 11 a.m. Sunday from 57th Street and proceeds up Fifth Avenue. But security will be tight, including more than 1,000 officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, sharpshooters on rooftops and radiation detection devices. Sanitation trucks filled with sand will block streets to prevent vehicle attacks.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison says the precautions are in response to threats of terrorism in Israel, the Middle East and around the world. Police also are bracing for anti-Israel demonstrations.
The parade marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel.

Eyeing Turkish elections, Israel delays Armenian genocide debate

Netanyahu delayed a ministerial debate on recognizing Turkey’s massacre of the Armenian people as a genocide in order to avoid aiding Islamists in Turkish elections.
By: World Israel News Staff
At the advice of the Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night delayed a ministerial debate on motions to officially recognize the Armenian genocide.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Netanyahu had accepted a recommendation to postpone debating legislation on recognizing the genocide until after the June 24 Turkish elections “because holding the debate on its original schedule might serve Erdogan in his campaign.”
Recognition of the Armenian genocide is deeply unpopular in Turkey. the Ministry explained. If Israel were to take a stand in favor of recognizing the Armenian genocide, Erdogan would take advantage of it to criticize Israel.
Erdogan’s anti-Israel stance has already garnered support from large swathes of Turkey’s populace outside the large city centers who tend to be religious Muslims.
Israeli-Turkish relations are at a nadir
Relations between Israel and Turkey, which have worsened under Erdogan, soured dramatically in recent months.
US President Donald Trump’s decision in December to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was strongly opposed by Erdogan. He has compared Israel to the Nazi regime in the wake of recent clashes on the Israel-Gaza border in which dozens of Palestinians were killed trying to overrun Israel’s border fence.
The ambassadors and consuls general of both Israel and Turkey were expelled to their respective countries.
The Jewish state’s special role
Recognition of the Armenian genocide was raised by politicians on the Right in recent weeks in response to Turkey’s attacks on Israel.
Armenians have long sought international recognition for the 1915-1917 killings in the Ottoman era as genocide, which they say left some 1.5 million of their people dead.

High Court to decide fate of law seeking to legalize settlements
 June 3, 2018
High Court to decide fate of law seeking to legalize settlementsAmona outpost scheduled for demolition in 2016. (Flash90)
When passed last year, the law now in danger of being nullified was hailed by the Right as a way to legalize many communities in Judea and Samaria.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Israel’s High Court began a hearing Sunday on the Judea and Samaria Settlement Regulation Law which they had previous frozen, to determine whether it should be upheld or declared illegal
The law, passed in February 2017, aimed to legalize retroactively up to 4,000 housing units that were built on what was claimed to be private Palestinian land in what is known as Area C (under full  Israeli control) of Judea and Samaria.
This would prevent what has been the common practice of the court when Palestinians or left-wing organizations claim the settlements were built illegally on Palestinian property and petition for the destruction of the Israeli homes, even though the Jewish owners had been assured by government ministries and institutions that they had a right to be there.
The Regulations Law states that the Palestinian landowners would continue to own the property but their usage would be expropriated by the State. In return, they would be compensated at a rate of 125% of the worth of the property or receive alternative plots in a different location.
The Jews who built their homes “in good faith or at the state’s instruction” would be allowed to continue living there.
In order for the Palestinians to receive payment however, they would first have to prove their ownership of the land. This might be quite an obstacle to many – and it is an issue that the High Court has never dealt with.

Israel denies reaching deal with Russia on Iran presence in Syria

Israel denies reaching deal with Russia on Iran presence in SyriaPM Netanyahu (R) with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Iran must leave Syria completely, Israel maintains, denying any agreement with Russia to the contrary.
By: World Israel News Staff
Russia has stated that it reached an agreement with Israel on Iran’s military presence in Syria, while an Israeli diplomatic official denied the reports on Saturday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone Thursday on the situation in Syria.
The two leaders “discussed regional developments and the Iranian presence in Syria,” Netanyahu’s office stated. The Kremlin said the conversation focused on “some aspects of the Syrian settlement.”
The two met earlier this month in Moscow.
The phone call came as Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman was visiting Moscow for talks on the Iranian presence along Israel’s border with Syria.
Russia says Israel agreed on Iran’s withdrawal from the south of Syria, while Israel stresses that the Iranians must leave Syria completely and not only from the Golan Heights.
The Israeli official also underscored that Israel will continue to maintain its operational freedom to act against Iranian entrenchment in all of Syria, Israeli media reported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported Thursday that Iranian troops and Hezbollah terrorists are preparing to withdraw from southern Syria.
However, a Syria-based official with the Iran-led forces denied the report, saying it is “untrue.”
Russia wants to cut a deal, report says
Russian news outlets recently reported that Moscow wants to cut a deal that would see Russian military police deployed to areas near Israel.

About 500 Palestinians held in administrative detention in Israel are planning to go on a hunger strike next week.
By: World Israel News Staff
Around 500 Palestinians being held by Israel on suspicion of terrorist activity, but without a formal indictment leveled against them, are planning a hunger strike in protest next week.
Issa Karaka, the PA minister of prisoners’ affairs, told Voice of Palestine radio that the strike will be implemented in stages with increasing numbers of prisoners participating and will add to the ongoing administrative detainees’ protest which has so far involved boycotting Israeli courts.
Earlier this month, an Israeli guard working at Eshel Prison was hospitalized after a Hamas prisoner poured boiling water from a kettle over him.
Administrative detention allows Israel to detain people without charge or trial for renewable six-month periods. When their terms are renewed, detainees appear before Israeli military courts — often without full knowledge of the allegations against them.
It is used suspected terrorists — both Palestinian and Jewish.
Shin Bet and Israel Police use administrative detention against groups of Jewish teens and young adults known as hilltop youths, who live in unauthorized outposts in Judea and Samaria and are suspected of vandalism and violence against Palestinians.
Israel says the use of administrative detention is intended to allow authorities to hold dangerous suspects while continuing to gather evidence, in order to prevent attacks in the meantime.

Several thousand Jordanians have joined the largest protest yet against the government’s recent austerity measures, including price hikes and planned tax increases.
Riot police scuffled with demonstrators late Saturday and fired several tear gas volleys to keep them away from the prime minister’s office. Protesters chanted, “The people want to topple the government.”
Earlier Saturday, King Abdullah II met with the prime minister, Cabinet ministers and senior security officials. The state news agency Petra quoted the king as saying Jordan’s citizens shouldn’t have to bear the burden of financial reforms alone. Abdullah is the ultimate decision-maker, but public anger is typically directed at governments appointed by him.
International lenders have pushed for economic reforms to help reduce Jordan’s public debt, a result of a sluggish economy linked to regional turmoil.

Report: IDF bombs Gaza terror targets
 June 3, 2018
The Israeli Air Force bombed at least two terror targets in the southern Gaza Strip Saturday night following a day of intense clashes.

By: World Israel News Staff

Palestinian media is reporting that Israeli fighter jets bombed Hamas bases in southern Gaza late Saturday night.

The incident reportedly occurred several hours after two projectiles were fired into southern Israel – the first since a fragile ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hamas, although the violent border clashes had continued.

The Iron Dome anti-missile battery shot down one projectile and another fell inside the Strip, an IDF spokesperson said.

During the day, several hundred acres of land in proximity to the Gaza border – including a nature reserve adjacent to Kibbutz Carmia and farmland on Kibbutz Nir Am –suffered the worst fire terror attacks since the start of the violent, Hamas-orchestrated “March of Return.”

The terror was in response to the death of a Razan Najjar, a female Palestinian medic hit by IDF fire during while treating a Palestinian protester during violent clashes near the border fence.

Israel’s Housing Ministry published tenders for another 1,162 homes to be built in Judea and Samaria.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israel’s Housing Ministry on Thursday published tenders for 1,162 homes to be built in Judea and Samaria.
The tenders are for 409 homes in the city of Ariel in Samaria; 459 homes in the city of Ma’ale Adumim, just south of Jerusalem in Judea; 250 homes in Elkana, Samaria; and 44 in Ma’ale Efraim, Samaria.
The Housing Ministry’s publishing of marketing tenders is a bureaucratic step that building projects in Judea and Samaria are required to take even after receiving “final validation” approval for construction by the Defense Ministry, the Times of Israel explained.
This announcement comes a day after Israel announced it was advancing plans for the construction of some 2,000 units at various locations throughout Judea and Samaria.
The region is home to almost a half a million Israelis.
The White House has so far chosen to refrain from criticizing Israel for its so-called “settlement expansion,” in sharp contrast to the previous administration.
Israel had refrained from construction and development in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria for several years for fear of blowback from former President Barack Obama and his administration, which repeatedly criticized Israeli “settlement” activity.

The White House chose Wednesday to emphasize Jerusalem’s willingness to cooperate with the Trump administration  after Israel announced the building of thousands of new housing units in Judea and Samaria.
“The Israeli government has made clear that going forward, its intent is to adopt a policy regarding settlement activity that takes the president’s concerns into consideration. The United States welcomes this,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council told The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post Wednesday.
“The president has made his position on new settlement activity clear, and we encourage all parties to continue to work toward peace,” the US official added.
Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has characterized Israeli construction in Judea and Samaria as “unhelpful” to the pursuit of peace. In his first month in office, he asked Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to hold back on construction approval.

Tamir Pardo said that in 2011 the prime minister nearly began a process that he was sure would lead to war.
By: Israel World News Staff
A former head of the Mossad spy agency said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israel’s military to prepare for an imminent strike on Iran, a move that could trigger a war.
Tamir Pardo, who revealed details of the events in a TV interview, said that he was faced with a dilemma: to carry out an order that he believed the premier was not authorized to make alone or resign.
In 2011, Netanyahu and then-defense minister Ehud Barak were concerned that the opportunity to hit Iran’s nuclear facilities was slipping away, Tamir related, as the sites would become so well-protected that any attempt to bomb them would be rendered ineffective.
The two men feared that Iran was close to producing nuclear weapons, a development it had long vowed to stymie.
Pardo said that Netanyahu instructed then-IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz to prepare the military so that it would be ready to carry out an attack on Iran within 15 days of being ordered into action.
That order, Pardo explained in a promo for the interview, carried enormous significance, leading him to contemplate resigning rather than participate in an attack.
Asked if a strike on Iran was tantamount to starting a war, Pardo said, “Certainly.”

“We never had, and you cannot hide it,” Assad said. “We have Iranian officers who work with the Syrian Army as help, but they don’t have troops.”
In an interview with Russia Today, Russia’s international broadcaster, Assad charged the Israeli government with lying about the Iranian military presence in his country, which would give them an excuse to attack his military.

By: World Israel News Staff
Education Minister Naftali Bennett said Wednesday that while Egypt was a moderating force in the ongoing Gaza conflict, no ceasefire has been achieved.
Bennett, who is also a member of the security cabinet, also blamed Iran for the recent escalation.
In response to a question from Army Radio about Israel’s relatively measured response to a barrage of mortar and rocket fire, Bennett said that Israel has to focus on the real culprit.
“Everything we have seen in the past 24 hours is the direct doing of Iran,” Bennett said. “They are trying to cause us to lose focus and forget about their presence in Syria. What is more important to take care of, the head of the octopus or one of its arms?”
Bennett, who spent the night in Kfar Gaza, a community adjacent to Gaza Strip, said there were no understandings with Hamas, neither formal nor informal.
“It could be that the other side is not interested in escalation,” said Bennett, adding that Israel will not be the ones to cause the situation to deteriorate.
Arab media sources quoted a high-ranking Hamas commander who announced at 4 a.m. that the different terrorist organizations operating in Gaza were obligated to adhere to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire as long as Israel honored it as well. An hour later rockets shot from Gaza hit a house in the Eshkol region adjacent to Gaza.
Bennett said that Israel would not allow Hamas to take advantage of so-called ceasefires to regroup and reinforce its troops as was the case in 2014 during Operation Protective Edge.
Bennett added that he and other members of the Education Ministry would be in the south providing support to families as they sent their children to school.

Barrage of mortars strikes southern Israel, kindergarten yard hit

Barrage of mortars strikes southern Israel, kindergarten yard hitTerrorists from Islamic Jihad's armed wing get training on firing home-made rockets from Gaza. (Wissam Nassar/Flash90)
A barrage of at least 25 rockets fired from Gaza fell on southern Israel early Monday. One mortar shell fell in the yard of a kindergarten.
By: World Israel News Staff
Over two dozen mortar shells were fired at Israel about 7 a.m. Tuesday by Islamic Jihad terrorists based in the Gaza Strip.
The Iron Dome anti-ballistic system intercepted mortar shells headed toward inhabited areas.
One man was slightly injured after shrapnel from one of the shells hit his hand.
The attack came as parents were beginning to send their children to school.
The volley of shells is being billed as the single-largest ballistic attack on Israel from Gaza since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge.
The Islamic Jihad threatened this week to respond to an IDF attack in Gaza in which three of its fighters were killed.
“We will not give up our duty to the dead, I know how we will respond to this serious escalation,” the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, Al-Quds Brigades, said. “The Zionist enemy can not dictate a new formula in which it will harm our people without a painful response.”
Sirens blared throughout Sha’ar Hanegev, Eshkol regions during at least two separate attacks from Gaza. The Iron Dome defense system intercepted most of the projectiles. Palestinian sources said that Israel retaliated with air and tank fire
At 8 a.m., exactly one hour after the approximately 25 mortar shells were fired at the Sha’ar Hanegev and Eshkol regions, incoming rocket alert sirens were triggered for a second time in the Eshkol region, the army said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, local government officials said.
One of the shells landed just outside an empty kindergarten in the Eshkol region, less than an hour before students were due to arrive, a spokesperson for the community said.
The kindergarten — along with all other schools — was set to open as usual, despite the attack.

Justice Minister: Option to invade Gaza is on the table

Justice Minister: Option to invade Gaza is on the tableJustice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)
After biggest mortar barrage since 2014 Operation Protective Edge, the minister said that security and political officials were considering all options, including taking control of Gaza.
By: TPS
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said Tuesday that security and political officials agreed “all options are on the table” with respect to the crisis in Gaza, including the possibility that Israel could re-occupy the coastal Strip.
Speaking to the Hebrew-Language Radio Darom, Shaked said it was a “miracle” that nobody was killed in a mortar strike on a kibbutz adjacent to Gaza Tuesday morning, adding that had the incident included Israeli fatalities, it could have led to war.
“Our reaction must be very strong,” Shaked said, “as if (Israeli) blood had been spilled. All options are on the table. We must seize the opportunity of this miracle to respond strongly.
Shaked explained that during security consultations in recent days, political leaders and military officers have “seen eye-to-eye” on the need to respond forcefully to cross-border attacks. The only consideration for the officials has been to ensure they make the “right move at the right time,” she said.
“Should we comprehensively ‘defeat’ Hamas?  When you say that, it means bringing down the Hamas government, which would mean whatever it means.”

The IAF attacked Hamas positions in Gaza late Saturday in response to the infiltration of four Palestinians into Israeli territory.
By: World Israel News Staff
The IDF struck several Hamas targets in Gaza Saturday night in response to continued violence at the border fence and the infiltration of four Palestinians into Israeli territory.
“A short while ago, IDF troops identified 4 Palestinian suspects who infiltrated Israel from the southern Gaza Strip and set a tire on fire. IDF troops arrived at the scene and fired towards the suspects, who fled back into the Gaza Strip,” an IDF spokesman tweeted at around noon on Saturday.
“The suspects stayed in Israeli territory for about a minute. During the infiltration, the suspects hurled a firebomb that burst into flames & placed a tent with the caption- “The March of the return. Returning to the lands of Palestine,” he added in a separate tweet.
The incident occurred in the morning in a continuation of the violent Hamas-led “March of Return” protests that began March 30 at the security fence separating Israel from the Gaza Strip. The infiltrators damaged the fence.
The Israeli Air Force struck Hamas targets the southern Gaza Strip late Saturday evening.
“The IDF views with great severity the daily attempts of the Hamas terrorist organization to strike at security infrastructure in Israeli territory while threatening the security of both residents and soldiers,” read the IDF statement.

Israeli PM Netanyahu vowed to capture and bring to justice the terrorist who murdered an IDF soldier by throwing a heavy marble object.
By: World Israel News Staff
An IDF soldier who was critically injured Thursday morning during a routine military operation in Ramallah has died of his wounds.
At around 5 a.m. Thursday, a force from the elite Duvdevan Unit entered a neighborhood on the outskirts of Ramallah to arrest a Palestinian terror suspect. During the operation, violent rioting erupted, with different objects being hurled at the troops.
Ronen Lubarsky, 20, was hit in the head with a heavy marble object and taken to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital. He passed away on Saturday. The funeral was set for 2 a.m. Sunday morning at Mt. Herzl military cemetery in the capital.
“We take this incident very seriously. The evil terrorist who injured him does not know day from night. Soon we will have our hands on him – whether he is alive or dead,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman declared on Thursday.

“Israeli companies offer top-tier technologies, services, and solutions that are in great demand by the UN,” Danon stated.
By: World Israel News Staff
This month Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon launched a special seminar in New York to increase business ties between Israeli companies and the UN.
Organized by Israel’s Permanent Mission to the UN and the Israeli Export Institute, the procurement seminar focused on furthering existing cooperation and building new relationships between the UN and the Israeli private sector.
“Israeli companies offer top-tier technologies, services, and solutions that are in great demand by the UN,” Danon noted at the seminar opening. “Whether it’s protection of peacekeepers, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, infrastructure, or development, Israel’s ‘blue and white’ products provide innovative solutions for the UN’s greatest challenges,” the Ambassador continued.
Christian Saunders, the Assistant Secretary-General for the Office of Central Support-Services in the Department of Management, said that “over the past few years, we have embraced technologies that allow us to better fulfill our mandates. Technology and innovation have been Israel’s bread and butter from the day of its founding, giving it a big advantage in these areas.”
“We welcome the participation of Israeli companies who have a lot to offer the UN and we are in the process of simplifying and streamlining the bureaucracy to make it easier for companies to do business with the UN,” Saunders said.

In a Jordanian hotel, Iranian representatives reportedly negotiated with Israeli officials over Syrian territories bordering on the Golan Heights.
By: World Israel Staff.
Iran pledged to stay out of fighting in southwestern Syria during talks with Israel that took place in Amman, Jordan, according to Elaph, a Saudi-owned website as reported by Ma’ariv.
Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces have clashed with Sunni rebel groups in Daraa, a region on the border with both the Israeli Golan Heights and Jordan’s northern border. Israel has made it clear that it will not intervene in the battles in the tri-border area, as long as Hezbollah and the Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias are not involved.
The US has also warned Assad not to move troops into the region.
The unconfirmed report said the negotiations were conducted last weekend between Iran’s ambassador to Jordan, who was in one hotel room in Amman with Iranian security personnel, while in the next room there were senior Israeli security officials, including the deputy head of the Mossad. The report said a Jordanian mediator carried messages between the sides.

Russian jets reportedly forced Israeli aircraft out of Lebanon, but none of the three countries has confirmed the incident.
By Batya Jerenberg,  World Israel News
Russian fighter jets from Syria forced Israeli F-16s away from the Lebanese capital Sunday night, according to a report citing Lebanese and Russian media outlets.
A Lebanese paper said the Sukhoi Su-34 jets took off from their Syrian coast base specifically to intercept the Israeli planes, while other reports indicated that the Russians had been on a military exercise off the coast and were forced into Lebanese airspace by bad weather conditions.
Since its direct involvement in Syria’s civil war began in September 2015, Russia has almost always been willing to turn a blind eye to Israeli air strikes on the country – and there have been hundreds of them. They have ranged from anti-terrorist activity, such as targeting caravans carrying armaments to Hezbollah in Lebanon, to hitting Syrian outposts that were the sources of errant shells that reached Israeli territory, and most recently, bombing Iranian military targets in Syria.

By: The Algemeiner
Israel will not collaborate with the United Nations Human Rights Council on an investigation into the recent riots on the Gaza border. Instead, it will issue its own report on the events, Hebrew media outlets reported on Sunday.
Around a hundred Palestinians were killed in the riots, most of them terrorists. The events were marked by attempts to breach the border fence, the planting of explosives, and the use of kites equipped with incendiary devices.
The UNHRC recently voted to establish a committee to investigate the riots, with only the US and Australia opposing the idea.

By: Aryeh Savir, World Israel News and JNS
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon informed the Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday that Iran had conducted two ballistic missile tests in January, in direct violation of Resolution 2231.
“On 2 January 2018, Iran launched a SHAHAB 3 variant at the CHA-BAHAR (South East Iran) firing range. On 5 January 2018, Iran launched a Scud variant from a firing range 110 km North East of Kerman,” Danon revealed.
Both the SHAHAB 3 and Scud missiles are Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) category one ballistic missiles, capable of delivering a nuclear payload of 500 kilograms for a range of over 300 kilometers.

Large explosions were heard in central Syria at a military base that reportedly came under “enemy” fire.
By: AP
Late Thursday, Syrian TV reported a military base in central Syria came under attack from “enemy” fire and that Syrian air defenses confronted a missile attack. It did not give additional details.
Minutes earlier, SANA reported loud explosions at Dabaa airbase in Homs province.
Syria’s government forces have relied on support from the Lebanese group Hezbollah and other regional militias, organized by Iran to wage war on Syrian rebels and IS militants.
Their reach in Syria has alarmed the Trump administration in Washington and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Tel Aviv, which say that Iran’s expansive networks in the war-torn country threaten Israel.
Netanyahu has warned repeatedly Israel will not allow Iran to threaten Israel from Syria.

A group of 74 US Congressmen, all Democrats, have called on Israel to stop the demolition of two Bedouin villages, which the Supreme Court and the State of Israel have ruled are illegal.
By: World Israel News Staff
Seventy-four Democratic lawmakers this week urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt the planned demolition of two Palestinian villages.
Orchestrated by representatives Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and John Yarmuth of Kentucky, the letter calls on the premier to nix an order to demolish the Palestinian villages of Susiya and Khan al-Ahmar in Judea and Samaria.
The letter sent to Netanyahu Monday said that the “destruction and displacement of such communities would run counter to shared US and Israeli values, while further undermining long-term Israeli security, Palestinian dignity and the prospects for peacefully achieving two states for two people.”
The initiative is part of a wider trend of Republican-Democrat polarization on issues related to Israel, with Republicans increasing more supportive of policies advanced by the present Israeli government and Democrats increasingly critical.

Following criticism which was taken to heart by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the cabinet decided Thursday to change a law passed with a large majority that empowered the Israeli leader to declare war with the consent of just the defense minister.
The new legislation will transfer power from the government to the security cabinet, a smaller group of government ministers.
Though decisions on declaring war are customarily made by the security cabinet, at least since 1982, this reality was not reflected in legislation.

Report: US may recognize Israeli sovereignty in Golan
 May 23, 2018
Report: US may recognize Israeli sovereignty in GolanPM Netanyahu in the Golan Heights, near the Israeli border with Syria (Kobi Gideon/GPO)
Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz reportedly announced that recognition of Israel’s right to the Golan Heights now “topp[ed] the agenda” in diplomatic talks with the US.
By: World Israel News Staff
In an interview with Reuters, Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said that Israel is now urging the Trump administration to acknowledge the Jewish state’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
While Katz reportedly predicted that the US may take the step within a few months, the White House offered no immediate comment on the matter.
In the wake of the US’ withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, its declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and its subsequent embassy move, recognition of Israeli sovereignty in the Golan could send another strong message to Tehran and Israel’s other foes in the region.
“This is the perfect time to make such a move. The most painful response you can give the Iranians is to recognize Israel’s Golan sovereignty – with an American statement, a presidential proclamation, enshrined [in law],” Katz told Reuters.
Israel captured the Golan Heights in 1967, prior to which Syria controlled the area, which has strategic significance to the Jewish state as a buffer zone protecting it from Iranian aggression.
Israeli officially annexed the territory in 1981, but the decision was not recognized internationally.

The defense minister wants to help 300 communities in northern Israel protect themselves in case of war, but funding for the project needs to be secured.

It sounds good – even excellent. As reported by Army Radio Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has presented a comprehensive plan to protect hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens in the part of the country threatened by Hezbollah, Syrian and even Iranian missiles. The only catch, however, is a big one: the budget for Liberman’s plan has yet to be allocated.
The plan, called “Shield of the North,” would not be small potatoes, as the cost is estimated at NIS 5 billion over five years. Municipalities are supposed to help build 200,000 private bomb shelters in people’s homes, and 550 public shelters, while 800 schools and kindergartens, 65 welfare institutions, and dozens of medical clinics’ protection will be seriously upgraded.

Azerbaijan continues to buck conventional Islamic world attitudes toward Israel by prioritizing good relations with the Jewish state.

May 14th was a historic date in Israel this year, marking the country’s 70th anniversary on the Gregorian calendar and the day on which the Americans moved their embassy to Jerusalem.
It was also the date on which the number of Gazan terrorists killed during Hamas-orchestrated rioting at the border was greatest, resulting in widespread condemnation of the Jewish state by the Muslim world.
One Muslim state, Azerbaijan, refused to join in the anti-Israel chorus, however, putting its national interests first, according to a report in Haaretz.
To that end, the Republic of Azerbaijan sent a delegation of senior officials to Israel from Sunday to Tuesday last week for the first meeting of an inter-governmental economic committee to encourage commercial ties between the two countries. Israel was represented by Minister of Environmental Protection and Jerusalem Affairs Ze’ev Elkin.

Just one day after a stern warning from the US Secretary of State, the Trump administration leveled new sanctions on five Iranians for supporting extremist factions in Yemen.
By: AP
The Trump administration is ratcheting up pressure on Iran with new sanctions targeting five Iranians for supporting Shiite extremists in Yemen.
The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that it was blacklisting the five for providing the Houthis with technical expertise that has allowed them to launch missiles into neighboring Saudi Arabia. All five are members of or are affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Following President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed Monday that the U.S. would step up efforts against Iran’s support for groups like the Houthis, terror organizations like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Israel and the Gaza Strip, and the Syrian regime.
The sanctions freeze any assets the five may have in U.S. jurisdictions and prohibit Americans from any transactions with them.

Iran threat leads Israeli security cabinet to meet in underground bunker

Iran threat leads Israeli security cabinet to meet in underground bunkerIsrael's Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman (C) with IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot (R). (Ariel Hermoni/MoD)
With the the current Iranian threat looming, Netanyahu reportedly ordered security cabinet meetings to be held in a subterranean Jerusalem location for the time being.

By: World Israel News Staff

A recently built underground bunker in Jerusalem will host meetings of Israel’s security cabinet until further notice, representing a significant departure from the meeting’s traditional venue in the Prime Minister’s Office.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provided no official reason for the decision to hold meetings in the new location, members of the Hebrew-language media commented that the intensifying conflict with Iranian forces in Syria may have necessitated the secure locale.

Notwithstanding Israel’s decisive military victories as of late via strikes on Iranian bases within Syria, including an early morning attack nearly two weeks ago during which Israeli F-15 and F-16 fighter jets decimated Iranian military assets, Iran has remained defiant, showing no intentions of backing down from regional conflicts.

In light of Iranian intransigence, Israel’s security cabinet is reportedly identifying the Jewish state’s red lines in terms of Iran’s continued activity in Syria.

Whether or not the security cabinet is also addressing Iran’s role in fomenting and bankrolling the Hamas terror organization’s violent “March of Return” remains to be seen, however, the new underground meeting location could also help secure information related to this matter.

In addition, media leaks may also be minimized by meeting in the bunker, suggested a report by Times of Israel.

Netanyahu lauded US President Donald Trump for putting pressure on Iran to stop its intervention in Syria and end its uranium enrichment.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the Trump administration’s tough stance toward Iran after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech laying out the conditions for a nuclear deal with Iran.

“No enrichment, tough sanctions and Iran should get out of Syria. We believe that it’s the only policy that can ultimately guarantee peace.” Netanyahu said at a reception for Paraguay’s president in honor of the country’s opening of its embassy in Jerusalem.

“Iran doesn’t need centrifuges for enrichment. If Iran wanted to pursue a peaceful nuclear program they wouldn’t need to hide their nuclear archive,” Netanyahu added. “Thank you, America, this is the right policy.”

Netanyahu said, “We believe it’s the only policy that can ultimately guarantee the security of the Middle East and peace in our region.” He called for other countries to follow America’s lead.

Opposition joins in the praise
Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid praised Pompeo after his speech laying out the Trump administration’s new strategy towards Iran.

“Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, is right. In a clear and tough speech he said today that Iran needs to get out of Syria and immediately stop its support for Hezbollah and Hamas. Iran needs to stop its nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” tweeted Lapid.

“The world must work together against Iranian terror,” he stated.

J Street bashes Trump’s Iran policy
The J Street advocacy group slammed Pompeo’s speech laying out the White House’s new strategy towards Iran, saying it showed America is “almost totally isolated and is acting as a destabilizing force in the Middle East” under President Donald Trump.

“Let’s be clear: Today, it’s the US alone that is in violation of the historic JCPOA arms control agreement. Under the guidance of his new war cabinet, the president has demanded Iran’s complete and unconditional capitulation on a maximalist list of demands – an approach that is a recipe for confrontation and war,” Dylan Williams, the group’s vice president of government affairs, said in a statement.

“The only way now to ensure that a profoundly unfit president and his regime change-obsessed advisers cannot bring about another costly and bloody war of choice is for Congress to exercise its constitutional duty to act as a check on the president,” he added. “Congress must make clear that the president does not now have its authorization for the use of military force against Iran.”

AIPAC welcomes Pompeo speech
AIPAC, on the other hand, said it welcomes Pompeo’s speech.

“We welcome @SecPompeo’s important speech on Iran today, in which he outlined a comprehensive US policy to prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon and to confront its regional aggression,” the prominent pro-Israel lobby group says in a tweet.

Sky News Arabia says blasts targeted an electronic warfare facility used by Tehran south of the Syrian capital. There was no confirmation of the explosion.

By: World Israel News Staff

Explosions rocked an area thought to house an Iranian facility near Damascus early Monday morning, according to a report in Sky News Arabia.

There was no immediate confirmation of the explosion and it was not clear what may have caused the blasts, which came days after another mysterious explosion at a Syrian base.

Sky News said locals reported hearing explosions near Najjah, a neighborhood south of Damascus that houses a military academy.

Not the first time
The alleged blasts on Monday came days after explosions were heard near Hama airport in Syria last week. The U.K-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group said the series of explosions occurred near Hama’s military airport and had been heard in Hama city, killing at least 11 government soldiers and allied fighters. According to reports, the explosions went off in fuel and arms depots.

Last month, Israel targeted an advanced Iranian air-defense system at the T4 base in Syria, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have been helping Syria’s Bashar Assad beat back a seven-year-old rebellion.

Israel has reportedly carried out repeated air strikes against them, hoping to stop the formation of a Lebanese-Syrian front to its north and the transfer of arms to Hezbollah.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will not allow Iran to establish bases in Syria.

Israel has coordinated its attacks on Iranian military facilities based in Syria with Russia. Earlier this month, Netanyahu was in Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ahead of the meeting, Netanyahu said, “In light of what is happening in Syria at this moment, it is necessary to ensure the continued security coordination between the Russian army and the Israel Defense Forces.”

The US and several Gulf countries have placed new anti-terror sanctions on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror organization, adding pressure to fight the group’s global financial network.
The US Treasury Department stated Wednesday that Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf nations are slapping sanctions on Hezbollah’s senior leadership. The sanctions are being coordinated by a US-Gulf partnership called the Terrorist Financing and Targeting Center (TFTC), which was formed last May.
Ten officials were hit with the sanctions, including Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and his deputy, Naim Qassem.

The Gulf states also targeted four of the terror group’s committees and ordered the individuals’ assets and bank accounts frozen, Saudi Arabia’s official news agency stated.
The Arab League branded Hezbollah a terror organization in November 2017.
Most of the Hezbollah officials were already under heavy US sanctions, so the actions will have limited practical implications in the US. The Trump administration has been targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon in order to increase pressure on its patron, Iran, following the president’s withdrawal last week from the Iran nuclear deal.

Hamas’s Gaza violence: Why now? Why these tactics?
 May 17, 2018
Hamas’s Gaza violence: Why now? Why these tactics?Hamas terrorists in Gaza. (Abed Rahim Khatib/ Flash90)
ANALYSIS: Hamas has been organizing throngs of Gazans to overrun the border fence with Israel at their own peril. Why are they using this tactic and why now?
By: Mati Wagner, World Israel News
The Hamas-orchestrated attempts to breach the border fence separating Israel from Gaza reached new levels of violence Monday.
Over 60 Gazans were killed and hundreds were wounded as IDF forces stationed along the border fence used tear gas and other forms of crowd control, as well as live fire, to prevent thousands of rioters — including armed Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists — from forcing their way into Israel and attacking IDF soldiers and neighboring Jewish communities.
But why is this happening now? And why has Hamas changed its tactics?
Hamas is in trouble
Ostensibly, the rioting, which has been billed by Hamas as the “Great March of Return,” is about the Palestinian “right of return” or the right of Palestinian “refugees” to “return” to their homes in Israel. The incidents on Monday coincided with the eve of Israel’s Independence Day, which Palestinians call Nakba Day or “the day of the catastrophe.”
But the real reason for the rioting is that Hamas is in trouble. The terrorist organization is facing a humanitarian crisis at home and diplomatic isolation abroad.
Gazans lack basic necessities due to Hamas’s incompetence and willingness to prioritize terrorist capabilities over taking care of Gazans.

UN calls for protection for Palestinian civilians from IDF ‘assaults’

The UN Human Rights Council continues to blame Israel for the deaths of armed Hamas “protesters” attempting to breach the security fence and cross the border in order to kill and kidnap Israel.
By: AP and World Israel News
Despite the fact that the majority of casualties at the Israel-Gaza border were terrorists, as confirmed by Hamas, which openly states the goal of eliminating Israel and killing Jews, the UN Human Rights Council continues to blame the Jewish state for the deadly violence.
Following an intense session throughout the day on Friday, the council approved a resolution, drafted by Kuwait, asking the commission of inquiry to “provide recommendations to protect civilians against any further assaults” in Gaza.
The resolution was approved by a vote of 29-2, with 14 abstentions. The US and Australia were the only two countries to vote against the resolution.
Croatia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Panama, Republic of Korea, Rwanda, Switzerland, Togo, and the UK abstained.
The UN’s top human rights official said Friday there’s “little evidence” that Israel made an effort to minimalize casualties during protests by Palestinians earlier this week and backed calls for an international inquiry.
Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein spoke in Geneva to a special session of the UN Human Rights Council called following a deadly crackdown on protesters in Gaza by Israeli forces. Israeli troops firing into Hamas-ruled Gaza killed nearly 60 Palestinians at mass border protests on Monday.
The session will consider a resolution put forward by Pakistan and other Muslim countries that includes a call for the council to dispatch an “independent, international commission of inquiry.”
‘Little evidence of attempt to minimize casualties’
“There is little evidence of any attempt to minimize casualties on Monday,” said Zeid, a Jordanian prince.

Israeli scientists have exposed the earliest evidence of blood vengeance in ancient times.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israeli scientists recently exposed the earliest evidence of blood vengeance in ancient times, found in a cave in the Jerusalem hills believed to have been inhabited by Bedouins.
In an archaeological survey conducted in the cave, Prof. Boaz Zissu, of the Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University, discovered a human skull and palm bones that have been dated to the 10th-11th centuries CE, about a 1,000 years old.
The bones were identified by Dr. Yossi Nagar, an anthropologist at the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), and Dr. Haim Cohen, of the National Center for Forensic Medicine and Tel Aviv University, as belonging to a man aged 25-40 years.
According to the researchers, “the skull cap shows signs of two traumatic injuries that eventually healed, evidence of previous violence experienced by the victim, as well as a small cut-mark caused close to the time of death, and a blow by a sword that caused certain and immediate death.”
A morphological examination of the skull revealed a great resemblance to the local Bedouin population in Israel, which apparently had a tradition of blood vengeance, even before the birth of Islam.
This finding is consistent with the historical knowledge that in the period under discussion, a millennia ago, the Jerusalem hills were inhabited by Bedouin who migrated to the area from northern Arabia.

Canadian PM slammed for condemning Israel, ignoring Hamas role in Gaza violence

The Canadian opposition and Jewish organizations are slamming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for ignoring Hamas’ leadership in the deadly Gaza violence. Former PM Stephen Harper was a staunch supporter of the Jewish state.
By: Ben Cohen, The Algemeiner
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau encountered strong criticism on Thursday over his earlier statement condemning the violence on the Israel-Gaza Strip border that excluded any mention of Hamas’ role in stoking Palestinian attacks.
Trudeau spoke out on Wednesday after learning that a Canadian citizen had been shot and wounded during the two days of clashes that resulted in the deaths of 62 Palestinians — 50 of whom, according to a senior Hamas spokesman, were Hamas operatives. Declaring that Canada was “appalled that Dr. Tarek Loubani, a Canadian citizen, is among the wounded,” Trudeau said that his government was “engaging with Israeli officials to get to the bottom of these events.”

Multinational technology giant Intel announced on Tuesday that it plans to increase its investment in ‎Israel by an additional NIS 18 billion (‎‎$5 ‎billion‎). This follows the company’s announcement in February that it will invest $4.5 billion in its Israeli ‎ventures in 2018.‎
Intel Israel currently employs 11,000 people. ‎According to its website, Intel has bought ‎goods and services from local Israeli suppliers to ‎the tune of $10 billion in the past decade, with ‎exports amounting to $50 billion. The company’s ‎exports for 2017 totaled $3.6 billion.‎
The additional funds have been earmarked for the ‎company’s flagship facility in the southern Israeli city of ‎Kiryat Gat.‎
Intel is expected to receive a host of tax breaks ‎and other state incentives for its investment, ‎which the government is expected to approve in the ‎coming weeks. ‎
The company said that as part of its investment, it ‎will offer 250 new jobs, as well as undertake the ‎technological upgrade of the Kiryat Gat facility, which Intel officials say has a ‎‎“significant advantage” over the company’s other ‎sites worldwide.‎
An inter-ministerial team tasked with offering ‎incentives to foreign investors has recommended ‎giving Intel a grant of NIS 700 million ($195 million), contingent on its commitment to making a ‎strategic investment in its Israeli operations.‎
‎“I have just heard from Intel CEO [in Israel] Yaniv ‎Garty that after two years of intensive work, ‎Intel’s global management has accepted our proposal ‎to invest another NIS 18 billion and expand its ‎activity in Israel,” said Israel’s Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon.

Belgium was expecting to rebuke Israel’s ambassador over the violence in Gaza, but she fought back instead.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israel’s Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Simona Frankel was summoned by both foreign ministries, which sought to dress her down for Monday’s violence on Israel’s southern border with Gaza, during which 62 Palestinians, mostly terrorists, were killed.
Belgium’s Foreign Minister Didier Reynders called in Frankel on Tuesday after she said that all Palestinians killed in the violence were “terrorists.”
Belgium’s Prime Minister Charles Michel called for an international inquiry into the clashes, to be led by the United Nations.
“The violence committed in the Gaza Strip yesterday is unacceptable. We call for an international inquiry led by the United Nations,” Michel said in a joint statement with Reynders. “Firing live rounds on protesters is shameful.”
During an interview with Belgian broadcaster RTBF, Frankel said that those killed were terrorists. “Look at the people who take a baby toward a fence. These are not peaceful demonstrators.”
To this, Reynders stated “to say that all the people who were killed were terrorists, that is beyond belief.”
Incidentally, a Hamas official admitted that 50 of the 62 Palestinians killed during the riots on the Gaza border were members of the Palestinian terrorist group.
“In the last rounds of confrontations, if 62 people were martyred, 50 of the martyrs were Hamas and 12 from the people [civilians]. How can Hamas reap the fruits if it pays such an expensive price?”

“Now that it has become clear that the US is not an honest broker at all, we decided to exercise our right in joining” UN agencies, a Palestinian official said.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
In an apparent pushback to the recent American transfer of its embassy to Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority (PA) will soon apply for full membership at three unnamed United Nations (UN) organizations, a PA official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
“Back when we dealt with the US as an honest broker in the peace process, it asked us not to join these organizations and we complied. However, now that it has become clear that the US is not an honest broker at all, we decided to exercise our right in joining them,” the official said.
This is not a new tactic for Ramallah. After the PA was created following the Oslo Accords in 1993, it joined many international bodies of lesser importance. But ever since 2012, when the UN general assembly upgraded its observer status to “non-member observer state,” which formally allowed it access to international bodies, it has applied to them in waves.

Turkey allegedly tried smuggling made-in-Israel electronic devices to Iran that could be used as parts for nuclear weapons triggers.
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Did Turkey violate United Nations Resolution 2231 that does not allow components or technologies that could be used in nuclear weapons to be sold to Iran? The international organization’s Secretariat has asked Israel, among other countries, to help it find out, according to a report Thursday in Yedioth Ahranoth.
The story began last July, said the paper, when the United Arab Emirates (UAE) seized a shipment that Turkey was sending to Iran that contained CSP 180/300 model capacitors. These small devices are what is called dual-use technology. High speed capacitors are components that are critical to activate, or trigger, a nuclear weapon. However, capacitors in general are widely used in many common electrical devices.

Paraguay’s government says President Horacio Cartes will open the country’s new embassy in Israel on Tuesday in Jerusalem, following similar steps by the United States and Guatemala.
Government spokesman Mariano Mercado says Cartes will leave for the trip on Saturday.
The decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem has been controversial in Paraguay. It comes less than two months before Mario Abdo Benitez replaces Cartes, and the president-elect has said he wasn’t consulted.
Paraguay will be the third country to move its embassy to Jerusalem, after the United States and Guatemala opened embassies in the city this week.
Last month, Cartes said that he wanted to relocate the country’s embassy to Jerusalem before the end of his presidential term in August.

In an exchange of insulting gestures, Turkey and Israel subjected each other’s diplomats to public security checks that are normally not carried out on government officials, inviting the media to record and broadcast the proceedings.
First, Eitan Na’eh went to the airport Wednesday after being told to leave Turkey following Monday’s violence at the Gaza-Israel border that allegedly resulted in some 60 Palestinian deaths and 2,700 injuries, infuriating President Recep Erdoğan. Before getting on his plane, however, he had to pass through Turkish security, which made sure to pat him down, take off his shoes and have a scan of his hands — all in front of a pre-invited Turkish media corps.
“This was a deliberate humiliation,” an Israeli political source stated, according to Kan News. “The journalists were invited to the field and put into the sterile area of the Turkish Airlines flight, where a security check is carried out just before boarding the plane.”

Many countries are denouncing Israel and even the US for the deadly Palestinian violence at the Gaza border, with two countries recalling their ambassadors. The White House is defending the IDF response to the “unprecedented” threat.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Around 40,000 demonstrators heeded the Hamas government’s call to amass at the border fence with Israel Monday, more than twice the usual number that has shown up over the last several weeks during the Palestinians’ so-called “March of Return.”
The IDF, which heeded the stepped-up rhetoric in anticipation of the Palestinians’ Nakba Day (May 15) and their anger over the opening the same day of the American embassy in Jerusalem, reinforced its numbers accordingly. They also dropped leaflets into Gaza, warning the residents not to approach the border.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians nonetheless made violent attempts at some 13 points to damage the security infrastructure and/or get through to Israeli territory, and the soldiers repelled the forces with tear gas, rubber bullets and, when necessary, live ammunition.
Indeed, Yahya Sinwar, the Gaza-based leader of Hamas, warned last week that Monday’s riots would be “decisive,” with the Palestinians “like a tiger running in all directions.

Speaking at the opening of a leadership meeting held in Ramallah on Monday, Abbas described the US embassy in Jerusalem as “an American settlement outpost,” throwing it in the same category as Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria “built in the occupied Palestinian territories.”
“What we saw in Jerusalem today was not the opening of an embassy, but the opening of an American settlement outpost,” he said. “Before we had settlement outposts with American help, but today we have an American settlement outpost in east Jerusalem.”
Abbas also claimed that the US had “defi[ed] international law and United Nations resolutions” and “removed itself from the political work in the Middle East as a mediator.”
“It’s no longer an arbiter,” said Abbas, stressing that the Palestinians will only accept a multilateral track for negotiations through an international peace conference.
The Palestinians have boycotted Washington since President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December, rejecting site unseen any potential US peace initiatives.

Palestinian media reported machine gun fire being directed from within Gaza at IDF aerial vehicles, and Israeli media reported that some bullets hit buildings in the border town of Sderot.
By: TPS and World Israel News Staff
On Wednesday, a number of homes in the Israeli city of Sderot were hit by machine guns fired by terrorists in the Gaza Strip, the IDF reported.
According to Sderot officials, army aircraft overhead were the apparent target of the gunfire, with the bullets entering the homes as they returned to the ground.
Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi called upon the IDF to respond “in full force” to the bullet fire. “Bullets should be regarded as missiles, and Hamas is responsible for everything that happens in Gaza,” said Davidi.
Several hours after the Sderot machine gun incident, IDF troops on the border again became the targets of gunfire from within Gaza, said the army.
The IDF attacked a Hamas post near the Gaza border on Wednesday, in response to Hamas operatives firing on IDF forces.

Palestinians recall envoys from US and nations that celebrated Jerusalem embassy move

Palestinian envoys to the US, Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary were instructed to return to Ramallah for “consultations.”
By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
Furious with four European countries that sent envoys to a Foreign Ministry-hosted reception earlier in the week to celebrate the new American embassy in Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority (PA) recalled its ambassadors Wednesday for “consultations.”
This followed a similar move on Tuesday when PA President Mahmoud Abbas recalled the Palestinian envoy to the US, Husam Zomlot, whose official position is the Palestine Liberation Organization’s chief representative in Washington.
Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania are all members of the European Union, but they broke with the EU’s official stance on the US move, which is highly negative. They also recently blocked an EU statement criticizing the Trump administration’s embassy decision. Foreign policy statements must be unanimously agreed upon by all EU countries, which meant it could not pass.
The Palestinians said they consider the diplomats’ participation in the festive event a “grave violation of international law.”
Romania’s government has expressed interest in relocating its embassy to Israel’s capital as well, although its president, who is in charge of foreign policy, opposes the government plan. In March, the Czech foreign ministry said it recognizes western Jerusalem as the country’s capital, although it objects to making any moves at this time. The Czech president , however, has reportedly said that moving his country’s embassy to Jerusalem is a top priority.

What does a US embassy in Jerusalem mean for Israel?
 May 16, 2018
President Donald Trump has kept a major campaign promise by moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, but how will this action affect the Jewish state?
By: Daniel Krygier
After failing to prevent the move of the US embassy to Israel’s capital Jerusalem, the European Union has tried to downplay its significance. In reality, decisions made by the United States have dramatic implications worldwide.
President Trump’s decision to recognize reality by moving the American embassy to Jerusalem, has already put unstoppable forces in motion. Guatemala and Paraguay have already announced that they are moving their embassies to Jerusalem and several other countries are reportedly planning to follow suit.
Despite undiplomatic pressures amounting to blackmail, Brussels has failed to maintain a unified position on Jerusalem within the European Union block. EU member states like Romania, Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic have refused to join the official EU boycott of the American embassy in Jerusalem. These countries are also at different stages of moving or at least considering moving their embassies to Jerusalem at some point. With the exception of Turkey’s radical firebrand President Recep Erdogan, even most of the Muslim world has realized that Washington’s decision on Jerusalem is irreversible.
Anyone doubting Washington’s global influence, should look no further than the deeply flawed Iran nuclear deal. While the Europeans insist that it is business as usual, the American exit will eventually likely lead to its collapse. President Trump’s planned sanctions on Iran will put significant pressure on the Europeans who will have to choose between trade with the US or trade with Iran.
The Europeans are clearly displeased with the prospect of losing multi-billion dollar trade with Iran but can’t afford deteriorating diplomatic and economic relations with Washington.
On May 14, 1948, President Harry Truman became the first international leader to recognize the reborn Jewish state of Israel. On May 14, 2018, the United States led by President Trump, became the first country to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Over time, most countries in the world have followed in Truman’s footsteps by recognizing Israel.
Over time, most countries in the world will eventually follow in the footsteps of President Trump and move their embassies to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. It won’t happen tomorrow or even next year, but eventually it will become a reality that rectifies a historic injustice inflicted on the Jewish people and Israel.

Former Muslim extremist slams what’s happening in the Arab world

He used to be a Muslim extremist, now he’s helping to stop them. The UN Watch recently honored Maajid Nawaz for his work. Find out more about this fascinating person right here.
Maajid Nawaz
Maajid Nawaz is one of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. He was a Muslim extremist, but then went through an amazing transformation. Nawaz used to be a member of the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.  He traveled around the United Kingdom setting up cells and taking part in organizing the extremist group.
Egypt Prison Time
While studying the Arabic language in Egypt, Maajid Nawaz, along with other extremists, were arrested by Hosni Mubarak’s secret police. They put him in jail for five years. As well, Nawaz also went through mental torture and solitary confinement. While in jail, he met with all sorts of Muslims. Religious and secular, radical and liberal, he met them all. Islamists, Jihadists, assassins of Anwar Sadat, leaders of Muslim Brotherhood and Hizb ut Tahrir, liberal Muslims and Muslims convicted for leaving Islam, Nawaz got to know them and their ideology. As a result of meeting different types of Muslims, and reading books about human rights, Nawaz came to a realization.
Seeing how wrong he was
Nawaz realized that he was wrong and Islamic extremism was wrong. Hence, he left Hizb-ut-Tahrir and called for a secular Islam. Additionally, he wrote a book about his experience. He even briefed U.S. presidents and successive British Prime Ministers on how best to combat extremism and make all our lives safer.
Maajid Nawaz Addresses 2018 Gala Dinner
Islamic terrorists are launching more attacks around the world. That’s why it’s so important for former extremists to share their stories. They can raise awareness as they have inside knowledge. Hopefully, it will inspire Muslim extremists to abandon their radical views.

Opposition head: Messianic atmosphere at US Embassy ceremony ‘disturbing’

Opposition head: Messianic atmosphere at US Embassy ceremony ‘disturbing’Pastor John Hagee (AP/J. Michael Short)
The messianic Christian atmosphere at the Jerusalem US Embassy dedication was ‘disturbing,’ says Zionist Union Chairman Avi Gabbay.
By: World Israel News Staff
Avi Gabbay, who heads the Zionist Union, Israel’s largest opposition party, said Tuesday that the “messianic Christian atmosphere” during Monday’s US Embassy dedication in Jerusalem was “disturbing.”
“It was a joyous day of celebration for our Jerusalem,” Gabbay told Army Radio. “But the messianism of the two pastors who spoke was not for me.”
Pastor John Hagee, founder of Christians United for Israel, delivered the benediction at the ceremony.
“We thank you, O Lord, for President Donald Trump’s courage in acknowledging to the world a truth that was established 3,000 years ago — that Jerusalem is and always shall be the eternal capital of the Jewish people,” Hagee said.
Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist, said a prayer at the embassy opening.
“We come before you, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, thanking you for bringing us to this momentous occasion in the life of your people and in the history of our world,” Jeffress said on Monday.
Jeffress went on to praise the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Trump.
“We want to thank you for the tremendous leadership of our great president, Donald J. Trump. Without President Trump’s determination, resolve and courage we would not be here today,” he said.

Koftan Halabi, chairman of the Druze Veterans’ Association, participated in the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem Monday and discussed his “excitement as a fighter for Israel against BDS around the world.”
Exclusive to World Israel News
According to Israel’s Jewish and Druze Public Council, “The covenant of life and blood between the Druze sector and the Jewish people in Israel began even before the State of Israel was established. Lately, the need has arisen to implement and strengthen the covenant among the second generation on both sides due to the growing erosion of the recognition of its importance to both the Druze and Jewish sectors. This concerns the Druze contribution to the establishment of the State of Israel and its strategic significance for the security and strength of the state and society.”
Koftan Halabi, chairman of the Druze Veterans’ Association, who represents “a new generation,” quoted that statement to World Israel News and issued his own regarding the US Embassy move to “Jerusalem, Israel’s eternal capital,” on Monday. Following is his official statement:
Thanking Trump ‘from the depths of our heart’
“It’s a historic moment. President Trump is making history. We thank him from the depths of our heart for his courageous decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s eternal capital and to transfer [the embassy] to Jerusalem.

Turkey recalls ambassadors from Israel and US, cites ‘genocide’

Turkey recalls ambassadors from Israel and US, cites ‘genocide’Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (AP/Burhan Ozbilici)
Denouncing the US Embassy move to Jerusalem alongside alleged Gaza ‘genocide,’ angry Erdoğan recalls Turkish envoys from Israel and US.
By: Ben Cohen, The Algemeiner
Turkey recalled its ambassadors from Tel Aviv and Washington on Monday as senior officials in Ankara frenziedly accused the US and Israel of sharing the blame for the “massacre” of Palestinian rioters on the border between Gaza and Israel and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan once again charged Israel with committing “genocide.”
The diplomatic recalls were announced by Erdoğan on Monday evening as he prepared to fly back to Ankara from a visit to the United Kingdom. In a speech at London’s prestigious Royal Institute for International Affairs earlier in the day, the Turkish leader remarked regarding the American Embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, “[W]e cannot help but feel like we are living through the dark times prior to the Second World War,” going on to argue that the US had forfeited its position as a mediator in the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel.

While Israel attempts to alleviate Gaza’s suffering, Hamas intensifies it.

Israel opened the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Gaza on Tuesday and enabled the passage of goods into the Strip, despite the damage repeatedly caused by Palestinian rioters to the site.
Hamas, however, has blocked the passage of goods into the Strip, further strangling the residents of Gaza. Hundreds of trucks loaded with goods were forced to turn around and drive back.
Israel Minister of Defense Avigdor Liberman approved the IDF’s recommendation to reopen the crossing for the transporting of goods into Gaza on Tuesday, despite the fact that Palestinians set fire to the site during the Hamas-led massive riots on Monday, marking the third time in two weeks Palestinians torched the crossing.

Report: Iran group offers $100,000 to bomb US Embassy in Jerusalem
 May 15, 2018
Report: Iran group offers $100,000 to bomb US Embassy in Jerusalem(Screenshot)
There will be a “$100,000 dollar prize for the person who destroys the illegal American embassy in Jerusalem,” the poster states.
A student organization in Iran has offered a $100,000 reward to whoever bombs the new US Embassy in Jerusalem, according to Farsi-language reports cited by The Washington Free Beacon.
The Iranian Justice Seeker Student Movement has reportedly disseminated posters calling for the bombing of the embassy.
There will be a “$100,000 dollar prize for the person who destroys the illegal American embassy in Jerusalem,” the poster states in Farsi, Arabic, and English, according to an independent translation of the propaganda poster provided to the Free Beacon.
“It is necessary to mention that the steps by Trump to transfer the US Embassy to Holy Quds [Jerusalem] has led to the anger and hatred of Muslims and liberators throughout the world,” the group stated.
The University Student News Network, a regional Farsi-language site, first reported the news of the bomb threat, the Free Beacon said.
The Free Beacon spoke to Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser and expert on rogue regimes, who said that terrorism of this nature is embedded in the Iranian regime’s hardline stance.
“Unfortunately, terrorism directed toward diplomats and embassies has become a central pillar of the Islamic Republic’s culture,” Rubin said. “Terrorism is lionized in Iranian schools. This bounty is more the rule than the exception. To blame Washington or Jerusalem is to blame the victim and give terrorists a veto over US policy.”

Israel bombs 11 Hamas targets, braces for another day of violence
 May 15, 2018
Israel bombs 11 Hamas targets, braces for another day of violencePalestinian rioters on the Gaza border. (Abed Rahim Khatib/Flash90)
After the extreme violence perpetrated by Hamas-led Palestinians on Monday, the IDF prepared for another day of rioting on the Gaza border.
By: World Israel News Staff
Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft on Monday conducted strikes on 11 terror targets in one of Hamas’ military compounds in northern Gaza, following the mass violent riots on the border with Gaza.
Similarly, IDF tanks targeted two Hamas terror posts in Gaza, one from which shots were fired at IDF forces.
Throughout the day, many rioters attempted to infiltrate Israel, with approximately 10 explosive devices and several firebombs were used and numerous shots fired at IDF forces defending Israel’s southern border.
These acts of terrorism were part of the Hamas-led violent 40,000-member offensive on Israel’s border during its so-called March of Return, which IDF troops operated to thwart. IDF forces responded with riot dispersal means and live fire in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Some 59 Palestinians were killed in the attacks and some 1,400 were wounded.
During the violent riots, Palestinians once again set fire to the Kerem Shalom Crossing, for the third time in two weeks.
The United Nations (UN) has warned that an alternative method of getting fuel to Gaza must be found immediately; otherwise, dwindling supplies needed to run hospitals, collect garbage, pump water and treat sewage will run out.
The appeal late Sunday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) came two days after hundreds of Palestinian rioters, led by Hamas, destroyed the Kerem Shalom fuel terminal at the main cargo crossing with Israel, the only entry point for fuel to Gaza. Officials say it could take months to repair the damage.

How does the conflict between Jerusalem and Tehran fit into Moscow’s overall interests in Syria?
By: Daniel Krygier, World Israel News
Last week’s dramatic military escalation between Israel and Iran received wide international coverage. However, a key player in Syria’s future kept an unusually low profile: Russia. How does the conflict between Jerusalem and Tehran fit into Moscow’s overall interests in Syria?
In order to address this issue, Russia’s interests in Syria must be properly identified. During the Cold War, Syria served as Moscow’s most dedicated client state in the Middle East. While the Cold War has officially ended, Russia’s interests in the region remain.
Moscow’s most important asset in Syria is its naval base in the Syrian Mediterranean city of Tartus. This naval base is crucial to Russia because it is Moscow’s only direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. Without this base, Russian ships would have to resupply by going through volatile Turkish waters in order to reach Russian Black Sea naval bases.
From Russia’s point of view, the Assad regime is a guarantee that the Tartus naval base does not end up under Islamist control. This is the main reason why Russia has emerged as Assad’s strongest backer in the Syrian civil war. At the same time, Russia maintains good relations with Israel and is not interested in an escalation in Syria that undermines its military assets.
By contrast, Syria’s other backer, Iran, is a leading sponsor of global terrorism committed to Israel’s destruction. Israel has made it clear in both words and action that it will not tolerate a military presence of the genocidal Iranian regime on its northern border.

European nations are lining up on opposite sides of the political aisle as the grand opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem date approaches.
Of the 86 national diplomatic corps that were extended an invitation to the embassy opening, 40 have responded that they will attend, including the ambassadors from Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria and Romania.
However, some countries have declined invitations, citing both ideological and technical reasons, including Russia, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Mexico, Portugal, Australia, Poland and Sweden.
The European Union as a whole has voiced opposition to President Donald Trump’s official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel. The entity drafted a resolution to condemn the Dec. 6 decision, but the measure was blocked by the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary, according to Israel’s Channel 10 news

Hamas-led violence on the Gaza border has resulted in 16 Palestinian casualties, including many terrorists.
By: World Israel News Staff
By the middle of the day, close to 50 Palestinians were killed Monday by IDF fire on the Gaza border during violent clashes, which involved some 35,000 rioters. The casualties include three terrorists who attempted to place an explosive device on the security fence in Rafah, using the violent riots as cover.
The numbers continue to rise.
Earlier on, an Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft bombed a Hamas military post near Jabalia after shots were fired at IDF troops from the area. No Israelis were injured in the incident.
Gaza’s health ministry claimed that 700 people were wounded Monday, including at least 69 by live fire.
Palestinians flew “fire kites,” which carried burning objects into Israel and caused wildfires in several locations.
For the past seven weeks, Hamas has been leading a series of protests under the “March of Return” banner. Hamas has declared that the riots will culminate with “decisive” action on Tuesday, May 15, the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel, which the Palestinians observe as Nakba Day, meaning “Day of Catastrophe.”
The IDF vowed to prevent a potential breach of the Gaza border at all costs and has added several layers of security.

The leaflets also stressed to the Gaza residents that the Hamas terror group, which rules the Strip, was putting their lives at risk by encouraging them to commit violence and attempt to infiltrate Israel.
“Hamas is trying to hide its many failures by endangering your lives,” the leaflets said. “At the same time, Hamas is stealing your money and using it to dig tunnels at your expense.”
“Don’t be puppets in the hands of Hamas,” the IDF urged. “You deserve a better government and a better future.”
“Do not approach the security fence and do not participate in Hamas’s life-threatening farce,” the notice concludes sternly.

The IDF introduced its solution to Hamas’ kite-arson terror attacks.
By: World Israel News Staff
The IDF has recently begun deploying small drones to combat Hamas’ use of fire kites, which carry fiery objects to commit arson terror attacks in Israel’s south.
Israel’s Walla news reported Saturday that the IDF deployed a small UAV during Friday’s riots which cut down some 40 kites which the Palestinians deployed.
Prior to Friday’s success, the drone was tested a few times and was improved up to its full deployment.
In recent weeks, Palestinian terrorists have sent incendiary kites and helium balloons attached to Molotov cocktails over the border into Israeli fields in the south, causing dozens of fires that have destroyed hundreds of acres of woods and farmland and have ruined produce worth millions of shekels.
The use of incendiary balloons and fire kites is growing in popularity among Palestinian saboteurs.
Palestinians in Gaza have been using “fire kites” in recent weeks as part of the larger “March of Return” protests that began on March 30.
The violent Friday rallies have been orchestrated by Hamas, which controls Gaza, as part of an effort to “liberate Palestine.” Rioters have burned tires, thrown explosive devices and attempted to damage the security fence in order to infiltrate Israel.
Friday’s violence represented the seventh consecutive week of riots and included some 15,000 Palestinians who hurled pipe bombs, rocks and grenades at IDF forces stationed on the border. The rioters also sabotaged security infrastructure and burned tires
IDF troops responded with riot-dispersal measures and used live fire in accordance with the rules of engagement when threatened.
“The IDF will continue operating to protect Israeli citizens,” the IDF stated.
These latest events occurred amid the daily violence on the Israel-Gaza border, orchestrated by Hamas, the Islamic terror group that rules the Strip and calls for Israel’s destruction.

The 25-year-old beat out competition from 42 other countries’ performers Saturday to claim the music extravaganza’s annual crown at the Grand Final with her song “Toy.”

Possibly seeking to de-escalate tensions in Syria, Russia will not provide Syria with the S-300 air defense systems.
By: JNS and World Israel News Staff
Russian officials on Friday indicated that they have changed their minds and will not supply the Syrian government with the advanced S-300 surface-to-air missile system.
Vladimir Kozhin, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin who oversees military assistance to other countries, told the Russian Izvestia daily that the systems are currently not needed in Syria.
“For now, we’re not talking about any deliveries of new modern [air-defense] systems,” Kozhin said when asked about the S-300 system.
Kozhin’s comments immediately followed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Russia on Wednesday.
Netanyahu, who attended Russia’s military parade commemorating its 73rd anniversary victory over Nazi Germany, sought to discuss the escalating situation in Syria with Putin.
A day later, Iran launched 20 rockets at Israel, and the IDF retaliated by wiping out nearly Iran’s entire military infrastructure in Syria. An Iranian version of the S-300 was destroyed in the strike before they had a chance to deploy it.
An operational S-300 could have significantly complicated Israel’s strikes

Israel is celebrating on Sunday the 51st anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, its eternal capital. The Old City was liberated during the Six Day War in 1967, after 19 years of Jordanian occupation.
After Israel declared its independence in 1948, it was attacked by neighboring Arab countries, including Jordan from the east, which captured the eastern part of Jerusalem, including the Old City. The Jewish residents were forced out, the Old City’s 58 synagogues were demolished, and the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives was plundered for its tombstones, which were used as paving stones and building materials.
On June 7, 1967, one day into the Six Day War, Israeli forces liberated the Old City and reunified the city.
In 1968 the government proclaimed a new holiday—Jerusalem Day, or Yom Yerushalayim—to be celebrated on the 28th of Iyar, the Hebrew date on which the city was reunified.
The day is marked with a range of events. Some are spiritual and include the recitation of prayers of praise and thanksgiving in synagogues.
Israelis from all walks of life join in street parades and concerts held throughout the city, notably the Rikud Degalim, or “Flag Dance,” during which thousands march with Israeli flags from the new city center to the Kotel, the Western Wall, in the heart of Old City.
The mayor of Jerusalem is addressing a celebratory reception at the Tower of David museum in the Old City, and state ceremonies and memorial services are held for those who died in the Six Day War.
The state also holds a special memorial for the Jewish immigrants from Ethiopia who walked to Israel, as many died on the way with the hope of seeing the holy city of Jerusalem.
This year’s celebrations are held just a day before the US’ historic relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The US embassy move represents the culmination of Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and paves the way for other countries who intend to move their embassies there.
“Big week next week when the American Embassy in Israel will be moved to Jerusalem. Congratulations to all!” President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday.

The IDF issued a stark warning about the culmination of the Hamas terror group’s “March of Return,” which is arriving a day earlier than planned.
By: World Israel News Staff
In anticipation of violence and mayhem planned by the Hamas terror group to coincide with the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, the IDF projected that the number of Palestinian rioters on Monday could reach 100,000, with hundreds potentially attempting to breach the border fence and attack nearby towns within Israel.
The IDF’s warnings included reference to the potential for an attempted “massacre” of Israeli civilians, as the Palestinian street prepares for the unbridled rioting that generally accompanies “Nakba Day” on May 15, which is the Palestinians’ version of Israel’s Independence Day, invoking the Arabic word for catastrophe.

Speaking at a celebratory gala ahead of the US’ embassy move to Jerusalem on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the 32 foreign ambassadors in attendance to move their embassies to Jerusalem.
“It is the right thing to do,” said Netanyahu, “it advances peace.”
A total of 32 out the 86 foreign ambassadors in Israel attended the Gala, with most of the European Union opting not to attend, as well as the representatives from Russia, Egypt, India and Japan.
Netanyahu also discussed Israel’s Saturday night victory in the Eurovision song competition in Lisbon, taking the opportunity to call out BDS advocates who called for Israel not to be allowed to compete in the competition.
“Those who did not want Jerusalem in the Eurovision, will get the Eurovision in Jerusalem,” Netanyahu proclaimed.

The celebration of America’s historic embassy move, from Tel Aviv to the Israeli capital of Jerusalem, began Sunday with a large delegation led by President Donald Trump’s daughter and son-in-law.
Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner, who both act as close advisors to the president, are part of a 250-member group that has come to attend the official dedication ceremony for the American embassy.
In anticipation of her second visit in a year, Trump noted on her Instagram page Saturday how happy she was to be coming to celebrate Israel’s birthday in such a way.
