There have been coups and revolutions, external invasions and proxy conflicts, but the Middle East hasn’t seen a head-to-head war between major regional powers since the 1980s.  There’s a growing risk that one is about to break out in Syria, pitting Israel against Iran. The Islamic Republic’s forces are entrenching there, after joining the fight to prop up President Bashar al-Assad. The Jewish state,
perceiving a direct threat on its border, is subjecting them to an escalating barrage of airstrikes. Nobody expects those strikes to go unanswered. The path to escalation is clear, and the rhetoric is apocalyptic. “We will demolish every site where we see an Iranian attempt to position itself,’’ Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman told the London-based Saudi newspaper Elaph, adding that the Iranian regime is “living its final days.’’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said Israeli intelligence had obtained a trove of “secret” documents outlining a clandestine nuclear program in Iran. On Sunday, Syria got rocked by a missile attack that appeared to ignite a munitions depot hard enough to register as a 2.6 magnitude earthquake and is believed to have killed dozens of Iranians. Experts say the strike was most likely carried out by Israel.

Though Tehran has denied that Iranians died in the strike, a more aggressive posture toward Iran by Israel could bring about a major clash that experts say might lead to the biggest war the Middle East has ever seen. The perpetrator of Sunday’s attack hasn’t been confirmed. Israel rarely takes credit for strikes within Syria, though it maintains that it will strike at any Iranian activity there that it deems a threat.

DEVELOPING: Military targets in Syria struck by unidentified aircraft
Powerful explosions have been heard in the countryside of Hama and Aleppo provinces, the Syrian state news agency reports. The state media says military bases there were hit by rockets launched by an unspecified enemy.  The alleged attacks were reported by Syria’s Sana news agency on Sunday evening. Citing a military source, it said that “a new aggression with hostile missiles” took place at around 10:30 pm local time, targeting military positions in the Hama and Aleppo villages.  A Syrian law enforcement
source told RIA Novosti that the army’s munition depots were hit, in what was most likely an airstrike. The source said one of the targeted military sites was a munition depot belonging to the Syrian Army’s 47th Brigade. A fire at the depot broke out as a result of the attack, he said. Another target was reportedly a munition depot to the east of Aleppo, in northern Syria, located between the Al-Malikiayh and Al-Nayrab airport.

Direct conflict between Israeli and Iranian forces is increasingly likely in Syria as Tehran pursues a permanent military presence there, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis warned on Thursday.  Addressing a congressional panel before hosting his Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Liberman, at the Pentagon, Mattis said it was “very likely” from his perspective, “because Iran continues to do its proxy work there through Hezbollah.”   Receiving Liberman, Mattis told reporters that he saw no reason for Iran to ship advanced missiles to Hezbollah through Syria except to threaten Israel.  “I can see how it
might start, but I am not sure when or where,” the secretary told lawmakers. Mattis then echoed Liberman’s warning from earlier in the day, issued through a Saudi newspaper, in which he said Israeli forces would strike Tehran if Iranian missiles ever hit Tel Aviv. The two met at the Pentagon after Liberman met with US President Donald Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton; his special representative for international negotiations, Jason Greenblatt; and his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, at the White House.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has denied reports that Moscow will supply Syria with S-300 anti-aircraft defense systems “soon” after a senior Russian official warned Israel that it would “suffer catastrophic consequences” if it attacks the system.  TASS News Agency quoted Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Monday Moscow had not yet decided whether it would deliver the advanced systems to Syria, but that it would not be a secret if it took such a decision.  “We know what
President Vladimir Putin said. He has discussed such matters with an official of our Defense Ministry from the standpoint of preventing a situation where Syria might turn out insufficiently prepared for aggressive attacks, like the one that occurred on April 14. It remains to be seen what decisions will be made by the Russian leadership and Syrian officials,” he said. According to Lavrov, Moscow has warned the US and Europe of carrying out additional strikes in Syria, but “certainly, one should be prepared to see more provocations.”

According to a statement by Air Force public affairs officer Kitsana Dounglomchan, Israel’s Air Force decided not to send F-15 fighter jets to the two-week-long drill, which will run between April 26 – May 11, out of Eielson Air Force base in Fairbanks and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.  “Despite this change, we are looking forward to hosting the Israeli contingent that will be partaking in Red Flag-Alaska 18-1,” Dounglomchan was quoted by local media as saying.  The Red Flag exercises take place
several times a year bringing together US and international forces for drills on realistic simulated combat situations. A statement released by Pacific Air Forces, the Alaskan Command’s higher headquarters which directs the exercise, said that over 60 aircraft “from more than a dozen units” will be taking part in the drill. Two Russian warships laden with military vehicles have been spotted en route to Syria after Friday’s US-led airstrikes obliterated three suspected chemical weapons sites.  An Alligator-landing ship was pictured cruising down The Bosphorus on Sunday as the world awaits Vladimir Putin’s response to this week’s co-ordinated military action against Syria. The vessel was spotted on its way to the Russian naval base at Tartus on the north Syrian coast.  On its fourth deployment of Russian military equipment to the war-
torn country the ship was seen laden with tanks, trucks, ambulances and an IED radar.  A yellow RoRo Alexandr Tkachenko was also pictured heading for Tartus carrying high-speed patrol boats, a temporary bridge structure, and several trucks. The images were posted on social media by Bosphorus-based naval observer Yörük Işık. They come in wake of Friday’s US-led campaign against Bashar al-Assad’s regime and a chemical weapons attack that brutally murdered 75 civilians.

Donald Trump has hailed the coordinated US, British and French air strikes on Syria as “mission accomplished”.  The military action was launched in the early hours of Saturday morning to punish the Syrian regime for a chemical weapons attack. The US president said the military action by US, British and French jets had been “perfectly executed”.
At a press conference in Downing Street on Saturday morning, Theresa May said: “There is no graver decision for a prime minister than to commit our forces to combat and this is the first time I have had to do so.” Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, said the strike had a “destructive influence on the entire system of international relations” and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Russia claims Syria air defences shot down 71 of 103 missiles
The Russian military has claimed that the Syrian air defenses, whose most modern weapon is a three-decades-old Russian-supplied anti-aircraft system, shot down 71 of 103 missiles fired by the US and its allies, the UK and France.  As further details began to emerge about the sites targeted by the US-led strikes, Col-Gen Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military said the strikes had not caused any casualties and that Syrian military facilities suffered only minor damage.
Although it was not possible to verify the claims, the most up-to-date system that Moscow has supplied to the Syrian regime is the short-range Pantsir S-1, which has an anti-missile capability. Russia said its advisers had spent the last 18 months completely rebuilding the Syrian air defense system, and said the high number of intercepted rockets spoke to “the high effectiveness of the weaponry in Syria and the excellent training of Syrian servicemen prepared by our specialists”.

Russia has warned there “will be consequences” following airstrikes on Syria launched by the joint military forces of the US, Britain and France in response to a chemical attack on civilians. The Levant is teetering on the edge of war after an airstrike hit a Syrian airbase on Monday, killing 14, including 4 Iranian fighters and 3 Syrian officers, according to Syrian state media reports.

Syria and Russia blamed Israel for the strike, which followed weekend reports of a chemical weapons attack in the Syrian town of Douma on Saturday that killed dozens of civilians, including children.

The atrocity in Douma has provoked an international outcry against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, whom many blame for it. That attack came almost a year after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike on Syria over a similar chemical weapons attack.

Airstrike on Syrian base kills 14
Russia’s Defense Ministry has joined Syrian state media in accusing Israeli jets of firing eight missiles — five of which were deflected — at the T4 base in central Homs on Monday. Syrian state media originally accused the U.S. of Monday’s airstrike, but later dropped the allegation after the Pentagon denied involvement, blaming Israel instead.

“At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “However, we continue to closely watch the situation [and] support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable.”

Israel has hammered Syria numerous times since 2012, mostly targeting supply lines that allegedly funnel Iranian weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel has accused Syria of enabling Iranian entrenchment near its border.

Israel also previously attacked the same base in February, after it allegedly deployed an Iranian drone that sailed into Israeli airspace. The February strikes prompted a response from Syria that ended with an Israeli plane getting shot down for the first time in 30 years.

President Trump warned on Twitter that Syria and its allies — namely Russia and Iran — would pay a “big price” for using chemical weapons against the civilians in Douma.

Trump vowed Sunday to make a “strong, joint response” with France, leaving the question of U.S. withdrawal in doubt:

President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!

Asked about the possibility of U.S. military intervention, Trump said, “Nothing is off the table.” In a similar vein, Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters who asked about the possibility of a U.S. airstrike on Syria, “I don’t rule out anything right now.”

The president promised on Monday that he and his administration would make a decision soon on how to move forward following the Douma attacks, for which the Syrian government has denied responsibility. The U.N. Security Council is also set to hold an emergency meeting on the chemical attack today.

“We’ll be making that decision very quickly,” Trump said on Monday. “Probably by the end of today. We cannot allow atrocities like that.”

These chemical weapons attacks are absolutely savage and inhumane. President Trump should take a tough stance on Assad and Putin before tensions worsen in the region.

The Syrian military has moved some of its air assets to avoid the fallout from potential missile strikes following Donald Trump’s threats of military action against Syria, US officials revealed.  The officials declined further comment and it was not clear whether the Syrian moves would impact US military planning for potential action against Syria over a suspected poison gas attack, Reuters reported. But this
move could limit the damages that a joint airstrike conducted by the US and its allies would have on the Syrian army, should the Western countries decide to turn words into actions. A similar assessment was delivered earlier today by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, which said that pro-Syrian government forces were emptying main airports and military air bases.

Russia has moved at least 11 navy ships deployed in Syria out to sea in the event of a U.S. military strike, which appears to be imminent in the wake of an exchange of threats between President Trump and Russian officials.  Trump replied early Wednesday to a Russian threat to shoot down any U.S. missiles in Syria with a tweet: “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’”
The threatened military strike is a response to an alleged chemical attack last week on civilians blamed on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Israel-based commercial organization ImageSat International provided satellite images to Fox News showing 11 Russian naval craft in the port of Tartus have departed, leaving only a single submarine.

newscaster explained before showing videos of pasta cooking in a bomb shelter.  The channel’s newscasters also displayed charts explaining how much water people need to store for drinking, washing their face and hands, and preparing food every day—and how that amount changes depending on the temperature of a person’s bomb shelter. The top adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Tuesday described a strike on a military air base in Syria as “Israel’s crime” and said it would “not remain without response,” the Lebanese al-Mayadeen channel reported.  Ali Akbar Velayati was speaking on arrival in the Syrian capital Damascus, reported al-Mayadeen, which is well-connected in government-held parts of Syria.
Seven Iranian military personnel were killed in the strike on the Tiyas, or T-4, air base near Homs, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday. Syria, Iran and Russia have accused Israel of being behind the attack – something Israel has neither confirmed nor denied. However, Israel has carried out numerous strikes in Syria, with some intended to stop Iran and allies including the Lebanese group Hezbollah from gaining strength near its borders.

Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said Sunday that a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma near the capital of Damascus killed at least 40 people. The alleged attack has been denied by the Syrian and Russian governments. Russia is Syria's closest ally and has a major military presence in the country.

Reports of the latest attack, which appeared to target civilians and young children, could not be independently verified.

First responders said they found families suffocated in their homes and shelters, with foam on their mouths. The opposition-linked Syrian Civil Defense were able to document 42 fatalities but were impeded from searching further by strong odors that gave their rescuers difficulties breathing, said Siraj Mahmoud, a spokesman for the group, which is known as the White Helmets.

It's unclear what the administration's next steps are with regard to responding to the attack. In response to a similar chemical attack in April of last year, Mr. Trump ordered a missile strike on a Syrian military target in Shayrat, about 50 miles due south of the village that was hit in a gas attack.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Sunday on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that he and the administration "will be reviewing with the president all different alternatives" for a response.

Regarding possible U.S. military action, White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that the U.S. "wouldn't take anything off the table."

"The State Department put out a statement last night and the president's senior national security cabinet has been talking with him and each other all throughout the evening and this morning," Bossert added.

Sen. Lindsey Graham told ABC that this was a "defining moment" for the president.
"He has challenged Assad in the past not to use chemical weapons," said Graham. "If it becomes a tweet without meaning, then he's hurt himself in North Korea. I he doesn't follow through and live up to that tweet, he's going to look weak in the eyes of and Russia and Iran."
Graham urged Mr. Trump to "show a resolve that Obama never did to get this right."

China says it’s rolling out new tariffs on U.S. meat, fruit and other products as retaliation against taxes approved by President Trump on imported steel and aluminum. The Chinese finance ministry says in a statement that the new tariffs begin Monday. The announcement follows through on warnings Chinese officials have made for several weeks in an escalating trade dispute with the United States.
China’s Customs Tariff Commission is increasing the tariff rate on eight imported U.S. products, including pork, by 25 percent. It’s also imposing a new 15 percent tariff on 120 imported U.S. commodities, including fruits.The tariffs mirror Mr. Trump’s 25 percent charge on imported steel and 15 percent hike on aluminum. The North appears to be “working hard to get ready for the next nuclear test,” Kono said in a lecture in Kochi, referring to the removal of soil from a tunnel at a site where past tests were conducted.

His remarks might be based on satellite imagery provided by the United States.

As for the possibility of summit talks taking place between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Kono expressed caution about reacting hastily to Pyongyang’s charm offensive.

“There’s absolutely no need to rush things,” the top diplomat said, adding that North Korea may take advantage of countries accepting invitations to send their leaders to Pyongyang for talks.

There are signs of a thaw on the divided peninsula, with global attention fixed on two closely related events — an inter-Korean leaders’ summit scheduled for April 27, and an unprecedented U.S.-North Korea summit that is expected to be held by the end of May.

North Korea’s most recent nuclear test, its sixth and most powerful, was conducted in September 2017.

Russia and China eclipse US in hypersonic missiles, Prompting fears
Russia and China are outpacing the United States in the development of super-fast missile technology, Pentagon officials and key lawmakers are warning.  Russia says it successfully tested a so-called hypersonic missile this month, while China tested a similar system last year expected to enter service soon.  “Right now, we’re helpless,” Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in advocating for more investment in hypersonics, along with missile defense.
Hypersonics are generally defined as missiles that can fly more than five times the speed of sound. Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, last week described a hypersonic as a missile that starts out “like a ballistic missile, but then it depresses the trajectory and then flies more like a cruise missile or an airplane. So it goes up into the low reaches of space, and then turns immediately back down and then levels out and flies at a very high level of speed.”

Kim Jong Un made a surprise visit to Beijing on his first known trip outside North Korea since taking power in 2011, three people with knowledge of the visit said.  Further details of his trip, including how long Kim would stay and who he would meet, were not immediately available. The people asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the information. Speculation about a possible visit by a high-ranking North Korean official circulated around the Chinese capital Monday, after Japan’s Kyodo News
reported that a special train may have carried Kim through the northeastern border city of Dandong. Nippon TV showed footage of a train arriving Monday in Beijing that looked similar to one used by Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il, to visit the country shortly before his death in 2011. The train believed to be carrying the North Korean delegation was observed Tuesday leaving Beijing, Reuters reported, citing a witness.

RUMORS OF WAR: China and India massing military build-up along border
Nuclear superpowers China and India are bolstering deadly arsenal along their borders sparking fears of WW3, it has been revealed.  Chilling satellite images confirm both countries are pursuing wide-ranging buildups along four critical air bases to prepare for a “military confrontation”. Images show India increasing the deployment of its premier Su-30MKI fighter jets at Bagdogra and Hasimara air bases in West Bengal. The jets will soon be capable of striking land targets with the advanced BrahMos
– the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world. An “even greater level of activity” was visible of the Chinese air bases near Lhasa and Shigatse, according to US geopolitical intelligence company Stratfor. China has moved it’s KJ-500 airborne early warning and command aircraft, components of the HQ-9 long-range surface-to-air missile system and Soar Dragon unmanned aerial vehicles at Shigatse Peace Airport.
