11 Questions about Heaven
Answered by Dr. David Jeremiah
Turning Point
 21 Jan 2020
Heaven is not just our far-off future home, but a place we can joyfully look forward to today.
The Bible provides more than 600 references to heaven, and we can gain incredible joy and fresh vision for our lives on earth as we read and understand these passages. In the following excerpts from my messages, I point you to a handful of these Scriptures and answer 11 questions about heaven.

Dr. David Jeremiah is the founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church. He is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations, National Quartet Convention and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels. Dr. Jeremiah's commitment is to teach the whole Word of God. His passion for people and his desire to reach the lost are evident in the way he communicates Bible truths and his ability to get right to the important issues. Dr. Jeremiah continues to be excited to see what God is going to do in broadcast ministry around the world through the Ministries of Turning Point.

1. Does Jesus Have a Physical Body in Heaven?

Just like we currently bear the image of Adam, we will one day bear the image of Jesus, and have a body like Him. Jesus tells us in Luke 24:39 that His body is real: “… handle me and see for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” Jesus’ body was real. And we will have a real body in heaven.

 2. What Will Our Resurrected Bodies be Like?

The first thing Paul teaches us about our resurrected bodies in 1 Corinthians 15 is that it is not like our current body. Our current body is subject to aging, disease, and death. But our resurrection bodies are incorruptible. You will never get old nor grow tired. You will never suffer disease or age or death.

3. What Will We Do in Heaven?

The concept of serving God in heaven reoccurs throughout the book of Revelation. For example, Revelation 7:15 says: “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them” (emphasis mine). I’m thankful, because I would struggle with a heaven where there is nothing to do. When we get to heaven, we will continue to serve God with the gifts He has given us.

4. Will We Know Each Other in Heaven?

Jesus in His resurrection body was real and his disciples recognized him. That’s the way it will be for you! It is unthinkable that in heaven we will know less than we do here. 1 Corinthians 13:12 says, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but the but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” We will have a greater sense of recognition in heaven than we’ve ever had on earth.

5. Will We Eat in Heaven?

This is one of the questions I hear most often. I can tell you, there are two occasions in the Bible where Jesus ate after His resurrection. One in Luke 24:42-43 and another in John 21:12-13. Based on our observations of Jesus’ new body, we can be confident we will eat in heaven—and without the negative effects of weight gain and acid reflux. We will be able to eat purely for our enjoyment and no longer for our sustenance!

6. Will Heaven be Boring?

Our God is not boring—how then can heaven be boring? Psalms 16:11 says “You will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy, and at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (emphasis mine). In His presence is the completeness and absolute explosion of joy! Heaven is God’s place and God is not boring, so I am confident we will not be bored.

 7. Does Purgatory Exist?

The concept of purgatory says you can go to a holding place after death where you have the possibility of changing your eternal destiny. That is not true—purgatory does not exist. Whatever decisions we make about eternity will be made here and now on earth. You don’t get another chance. Today is the day of salvation.

 8. Will I Go to Heaven?

Only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will go to heaven. Your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life if you “confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead” (Romans 10:9). Jesus said to his disciples, “do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

9. Is Hell Real?

Yes, hell is a very real place. When a person dies today, and they don’t know Jesus, their soul and spirit goes to hades. One day, according to Revelation 20:13-14, death and hades will be thrown into the lake of fire, the final and ultimate hell. Hell is real, and it is eternal separation from God and all His goodness.

10. Where is Paradise?

When a believer died in the Old Testament, their soul and spirit went to Paradise. And on the day of Jesus’ ascension, Paradise changed. Ephesians 4:8-10 says Jesus “led captivity captive” and took them with Him to heaven. He went into Paradise and took all the Old Testament saints and took them to heaven with Him.

11. Why Should We Learn about Heaven?

God has prepared a place for you to live for eternity. When we lose sight of that, we try to create heaven on earth. We can go to the extreme, spending all our money to buy the biggest house and get all the new toys. And there is nothing wrong with those things, but they will never compare to what awaits us in heaven. If we aren’t careful, we can end up replacing our hunger for heaven with cheap things that will leave us empty.

Can Loved Ones in Heaven Look Down on You?

Can Loved Ones in Heaven Look Down on You?
The conductor raised his baton, then nodded toward the orchestra. As the melodies of Bach’s Oratorio filled the cathedral, I waited for our cue. In the soprano section, we stood in matching black concert dresses, voices raised with joy.

As we sang, I thought about my dad. How he would have enjoyed hearing such a beautiful production! One year before, he had stepped into eternity. At 85, he had lived a full life; yet I still missed him and the musical connection we shared. Then the still small voice whispered, “He’s here, up in the balcony, on the left.” I could not see him. But as tears filled my eyes and the music swelled to its crescendo, I knew Dad heard me, sitting in that empty chair, balcony left.

Can our loved ones look down on us and occasionally visit?

Not just from my experiences, but also from others who have reported similar incidents. We are told about the thin veil between heaven and earth, and scripture bears witness to the possibility of movement from one to the other.

In the Old Testament, we read the story of King Saul, who asked to speak to the prophet Samuel. Granted, Saul made the connection through the witch of Endor (1 Samuel 28), but God allowed that experience. Samuel asked, “Why have you summoned me?” He and Saul discussed the kingdom and Samuel critiqued the embattled king. Saul asked for advice and God allowed it through his deceased servant, Samuel.

We are cautioned in Deuteronomy 18:10 not to seek out sorcerers and witchcraft. But the passage in First Samuel shows it is possible for someone who has passed to revisit earth and even speak to us…

The Stories
Reverend Stella Ruiz, an ordained minister and bereavement coordinator for Hospice, writes, “I have listened to many family members share how they have experienced the presence of their loved one. After a loved one dies, many family members yearn for just a touch, a scent, a sign, to know their loved one is alright: the soft smell of the loved one’s perfume, physically feeling the loved one’s arms around the family member, or lights turned off without any reason. The experiences are precious and unique, but can also be painful after the special moment has ended.”

Several years ago, I met a remarkable woman in a nursing home. In her 80s, Cora loved reminiscing about her life during World War II, the Depression, and the rebuilding of the United States.

Cora shared with me that her son, Buddy, loved his dog. They often played in the backyard, cavorting around the perimeter of the yard, jumping over a tree stump, and playing peek-a-boo under the sheets drying on the clothesline.

Cora’s precious Buddy died in the flu epidemic of 1918. She grieved long and hard. Then one day she heard the dog barking. She looked in the backyard and saw something that had not happened since Buddy became ill: The dog cavorted around the perimeter of the yard, jumped over the tree stump, then played peek-a-boo under the sheets drying on the clothesline. Cora knew the dog was playing with her invisible son, and a piece of her fractured heart began to heal.

But there is an argument...

The Argument
A common argument asks, “Why would someone in heaven watch what is happening on earth? That would simply make them sad.”

But what if God protects the deceased from the sadness and allows only what brings them, as well as us, joy?

We all need to be encouraged. God is faithful in providing that boost of encouragement exactly when we need it. Can’t the God who knows our hearts determine when and how to send a message of hope? Can’t he “save” our souls with a glimpse into his beautiful world and the affirmation that our loved ones are with him?

“We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1).

The use of the word “cloud” implies a different entity – possibly above us and enveloping us. Within that cloud stands those gone before, cheering us on, praising God for our progress as we “run with endurance the race set before us.”

Since we are told guardian angels walk with us and minister to us (Hebrews 1:14), is it not possible that the spiritual realm around us might also include those who have passed?

On the Desiring God website, John Piper addresses the topic this way:

A Biblical Perspective
“God will give the saints whatever measure of knowledge they need for the greatest experience of happiness in God. If they need to know something for their fullest experience of joy in God, they will know it. He won’t withhold what is needed for their happiness in him.” –John Piper

In the New Testament, we read about the rich man and Lazarus. Luke 16:22-26 records the story of how the rich man looked up and saw the poor man, Lazarus, at peace in heaven. The rich man realized too late his mistake in not believing and not caring for the poor folks who journeyed through his life. He asked Abraham to send Lazarus as witness to his family, to warn them before it was too late. Abraham declined the request, but this passage underscores the fact that a deceased Abraham conversed across the spiritual divide.

If those who suffer in hell can look upward, is it not also possible – under God’s tutelage – for the reverse direction?

The Bible gives us another example...

When God Wills It
In Matthew 17, the Transfiguration account underscores how deceased saints may suddenly appear on earth. Jesus is joined by Moses and Elijah, who talk with the Son of God. It is a moment of instruction for Peter, James and John, as well as a reminder to us that the saints in glory – when God wills it – can travel back to earth.

This July, my best friend suffered a sudden illness and left for heaven. After the funeral, I holed up for a while, journaling through my grief and trying to find some sense in my world without Deb.

One night, I sat on my bed with my Bible open, crying out the raw emotions of grief. Then I sensed Deb behind me, her hand on my shoulder – letting me know she was okay.

I did not actually see Deb or feel her in the physical sense; yet somehow just knowing she was in the room reminded me that our friendship continued into eternity and beyond what I could physically experience. As in life, so in death, her presence was a comfort.

Final thoughts:

We can’t know everything that happens after death –  and truthfully – we probably don’t want to know everything. Yet I believe God is so loving, he sometimes allows us to “see” or “feel” into another realm to remind us he is omnipresent and always caring.

Years ago, I read an anonymous quote that still encourages me today: “Since God is with us, and our loved ones are with Him – then they’re not very far away.”

What Will Heaven Be Like? (5 Amazing Things We Can Know for Sure)
I've thought a lot about heaven this past year, maybe more than ever before. Losing a loved one will do that to you. Within a year of each other, both my dear sister-in-law and father-in-law left this world and passed through heaven's gates. Their stories were different, young and old, but they both loved Jesus with all their heart. And though the pain lingers, we know they're in a much better place. No more cancer, struggle, tears, or suffering. No more pain.

Sometimes I've wished I could see how they are, that I could know what they're doing, or if they can look down on us. Over time, I've found that reading verses in God's Word and studying about heaven has soothed my heart and brought me hope.

Here's truth for a world that often seems unfair: This world will pass away, it's not all we have. As believers, we know that death, cancer, accidents, sickness, addiction, none of those things hold the final sting. For Christ conquered death on the cross, and because of His gift, we have eternity to look forward to. We can be confident heaven is real, and full of hope, for that's where Jesus reigns.

If you find yourself in a dark place right now, wondering about heaven, take heart. God knows the ache you carry. He understands the questions you have and the struggle to understand. He wants to remind us that there's glory ahead. As we look to what He is preparing for us, as believers, may it give us every ounce of strength we need now, to press on and boldly share the truth and light of Christ in a dark world.

For Christ conquered death on the cross, and because of His gift, we have eternity to look forward to. We can be confident heaven is real, and full of hope, for that's where Jesus reigns.

He wants to remind us that there's glory ahead. As we look to what He is preparing for us, as believers, may it give us every ounce of strength we need now, to press on and boldly share the truth and light of Christ in a dark world.

5 Promises from God's Word to Remind Us Heaven Is Real, and There's Hope Ahead:

Heaven is a real place, and Jesus is preparing a place for us to live there with Him.
Slide 1 of 6
Jesus comforted his disciples with these powerful words at the Last Supper, just before His journey to cross. And they still hold the power to bring great comfort and peace to our troubled, uncertain hearts today:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” - John 14:1-3

What it tells us is this - we don’t have to be afraid. We don’t have to live troubled in our hearts and wrestling with our thoughts. He promises us that heaven is a real place, and it’s big. It’s not the image we may have heard or seen of just clouds in the sky where we float around playing harps, being bored forever. Jesus is there and is working to prepare a place for us to live there too. He assures us He will come again and that all believers will be there someday. And if our Maker has created us with such uniqueness and power, we can be confident that our heavenly dwelling place will be greater than we could ever have imagined. Because that’s just the way He is.

It is amazing, and more than our minds can perceive.
Slide 2 of 6
God’s Word clearly reminds us that we just simply can’t comprehend all that’s still in store. It’s that good. It’s that amazing. And in a world that can often feel dark and is full of struggles and worries, that thought can be hard to even begin to wrap our minds around. But His Word says this:

“’No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him’” – But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit…” - 1 Corinthians 2:9-10

For those who have trusted Christ as Savior and Lord, we are promised an incredible future, an eternity, with Him. Just knowing that this life is not all there is can give us the perseverance to carry on through the toughest of times. We have so much to still look forward to! The Bible talks much more about the free gift of Christ and the forgiveness and new life He alone can offer than it does about exactly “what” to expect in Heaven. I think that’s a clear reminder to us to stay alert and active in sharing light and love in a world that needs His hope. This life is short, time goes by fast, let’s use our days wisely, so that many more have a chance to hear God’s truth now and experience heaven someday.

It is a place of true joy and freedom, with no more death, suffering, or pain.
Slide 3 of 6
This promise brings us so much hope in a world that knows great suffering, loss, and pain. It’s hard to imagine even one day without some trouble or pain, because we’re so human, and caught up in sin or struggle. We can’t even begin to comprehend an eternity of no more pain and sorrow, wow, that is simply mind-blowing, and such great news! If you have ever suffered illness, disease, or held the hand of a loved one who was in such pain at the end of their life…if you have ever experienced great anguish of the soul, or have struggled through addictions, or walked a painful road through trauma or abuse…there is hope still ahead. Heaven is a place where truly, the old is gone, the new is come. The struggle and pain we carry here, will be lifted away. We will be healed. We will be set free in every way of the burdens that now weigh us down.

“…They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” - Revelation 21:3-4

No death. No mourning. No pain. God will be with us and He will wipe away our tears for the very last time. Heaven is a place of joy and goodness, freedom and life.

Our bodies will be transformed.
Slide 4 of 6
God promises that we will be made new. We will have heavenly bodies for eternity and won’t be succumbed with sickness or physical weakness that we know here on earth. Contrary to some popular ideas out there, we do not become angels in heaven. There are angelic beings, the Bible is clear about that and gives many descriptions of them in heaven and on earth, but we don’t suddenly become an angel once we go to heaven. We are God’s children and have received the amazing gift of eternal life because of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.

“There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies, but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another…When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory…” - 1 Corinthians 15:40, 54

Other stories and scriptures in the Bible tell us that our heavenly bodies and lives will resemble who we are today, and that we will recognize others in heaven who we know here on earth. Many may wonder, what about when a baby dies? Or any older person? Is that the age they continue to be in heaven? Though the Bible isn’t totally clear on this, we can believe that if Christ is giving us a body that we will have for eternity, and since He is the Creator of all things, it will be the best ever and far greater than we have ever had here on earth! And if God is giving us a new body and eternal life, we can be sure that He has great purpose for us still in heaven.

It is beautiful and a whole new environment than we have ever known, for God dwells there and makes all things new.
Slide 5 of 6
Through the chapters of Revelation, we can find glimpses of heaven and what is still to come, as John reveals the vision given to him.Revelation 21 describes in detail the beauty of the city, its gates, walls, and the amazing truth that it is the very dwelling place of God:

“The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone…the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass…the glory of the Lord gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” - Revelation 21:18-19, 21, 23

God’s powerful presence is greater than any darkness we may face on this earth. And there is no darkness there. His words go on to say that in eternity, the gates will not be shut and there will be no night there. There will be nothing impure, no shame, no deceit, but only those whose names have been written in the Lamb’s book of life. (v. 25-27)

Heaven is real, and so is hell.
Slide 6 of 6
Jesus spent more time talking about its reality than any other person in the Bible. He didn’t talk about it to scare us, or to simply stir up strife. He told us of heaven and of hell too, so that we could make the best choice of where we want to spend eternity. And it comes down to that, it’s a choice. We can know for a fact that as much as people want to joke about hell as one big party, it will be no party. Just as heaven is a place of light and freedom, hell is a place of darkness, despair, and suffering. If you’re reading this now, and aren’t sure where you will spend eternity, take a few minutes to talk with God and get things straight. Don’t wait, we’re not promised tomorrow.

Here’s truth: Christ came to set us free, He choose to die on the cross, He was willing to do that, for you and for me, so that we can be forgiven of the sin and wrong in our lives, and receive the gift of eternal life. That is true freedom. There’s no other way that we can be saved, but through Jesus. He was buried, and placed in a tomb, but He didn’t stay dead. He rose again and is now in heaven with God, He defeated death, and He’s given us His Spirit to help us in this life. The Bible says if we confess Him as Savior and Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. Pray to Him today, and know that He is with you always, and won’t ever let you go.
