Ezra: A Priest for the People
Ezra: A Priest for the People
Key Verse:
Ezra 9:6 and I said, "O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, for our iniquities have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown even to the heavens.
In our lesson today we have Ezra, the priest of the people, faced with a dilemma.
He had to determine a course of action to restore the people of God through his priestly office. God honors the offices He placed in the church and those who hold them.
One of the priestly duties was to make atonement and sacrifice before God on behalf of the people. In this case, the people had repeatedly sinned and were currently in bondage ordered by god as punishment. In that bondage, God had shown great mercy by giving them favor among their captives.
On the surface this seemed to ban an open and shut case. God's response might seem obvious to those who do not know His mercy firsthand, he had destroyed others for much less. Nevertheless, Ezra went to God broken and distraught about the matter and appealing to the faithfulness, love, and mercy of God toward His people.
Pastors are faced with the same dilemma in our churches today. They witness the continual disobedience of God's people. They are cognizant of the Word of God and realize when our actions have left us broken. Still pastors and to plead for God's people even if they are repeat offenders. In understanding this, we can realize that our lesson highlights how God rectified the sin of
Adam and devised the plan of Calvary to redeem mankind because He loved us ( John 3:16; Romans 5:11).
There are many lessons we can learn from today's text. First, when the Lord drives out our enemies, it's not wise to invite them back or to entertain their ways.
Second, we must learn to be thankful for our godly pastors and leaders and give them esteem and due honor ( 1 Timothy 5:17). Finally, we are to give thanks to God who loved us and became our high priest forever and continually cleanses us from our unrighteousness if we confess our sins. ( 1 John 1 8-9).
Have a blessed day and week.
