Why Boris Johnson is having to sacrifice his libertarian values in the battle against coronavirus
CAMILLA TOMINEY JULY 14, 2020
Coronavirus Article Bar with counter
When he wrote his infamous Telegraph column about Muslim women who wear the burka resembling letterboxes, Boris Johnson made an impassioned case against face coverings while also arguing against an outright burka ban.
"If a constituent came to my MP's surgery with her face obscured, I should feel fully entitled to ask her to remove it so that I could talk to her properly," the then future Prime Minister wrote in 2018.
"Human beings must be able to see each other's faces and read their expressions. It's how we work."
Having long opposed forcing anyone to do anything against their will, Mr Johnson undoubtedly went against his natural instincts when he made face coverings mandatory in shops this week. Anyone failing to comply with the order in England, which applies from July 24, could face a fine of up to £100.
After Emmanuel Macron announced that masks must soon be worn in all enclosed spaces in France, speculation is mounting that Britain will inevitably follow suit.
But will lifelong libertarian Mr Johnson – forced by the global pandemic to become uncharacteristically authoritarian – really insist on such a draconian measure? While it is tempting to presume that the answer to that question will depend on the science, in reality – to coin the Clintonesque catchphrase – it's about the economy, stupid.
Although there is some emerging scientific evidence to suggest that face coverings not only help stop transmission but also protect the wearer, the decision is being driven by fiscal, rather than health concerns.
As Matt Hancock admitted in the House of Commons on Tuesday, the Government wants to "make shoppers feel even more confident about returning to the High Street".
Quoting Mike Cherry, the chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, the Health Secretary said: "Small businesses know that mandatory face coverings have a role to play in the nation's recovery, both physically and financially."
Yet the tricky balance between encouraging people to feel safer when they are out shopping and not putting them off shopping altogether was exemplified by the Tory MP Desmond Swayne, who told Mr Hancock: "Nothing would make it less likely for me to go shopping than the thought of having to wear a mask."
Illustrating the war Conservatives have been having with themselves over this contentious issue, Mr Swayne, the member for New Forest West, described a face mask as a "monstrous imposition against myself" and said his constituents were outraged by the latest ruling.
Reflecting the thinking among less strident right-wingers in the party, Mr Hancock responded that the mask ruling was the best way to ensure "the ancient freedoms [of] a gentleman going shopping".
But with George Eustice, the Environment Secretary, refusing to rule out the mask policy being extended "in chunks", Downing Street is under no illusion that it is not only the public they need to persuade to cover up and venture out (see below) but also Mr Johnson's own MPs.
With the Prime Minister due to make another landmark speech on Friday, setting out the next phase of Britain's coronavirus response, the emphasis is expected to be placed firmly on recovery following Office for National Statistics figures suggesting the UK economy is 24.5 per cent smaller than it was in February.
According to one well-placed insider: "The face covering policy is all about giving the public confidence to set foot outside their own front door – and once they do that, the economy has got a fighting chance.
"It's just a reassurance policy. No one thinks they have that much impact on transmission rates, but there's a feeling that they don't do any harm and might finally persuade people to leave their houses."
When YouGov recently canvassed the public on what measures they had taken to protect themselves from Covid-19, 67 per cent said "avoiding public spaces", compared to 38 per cent who said "wearing a face mask", suggesting a great deal of anxiety still surrounds going back to any kind of normal.
As one Cabinet minister put it: "By virtue of the brevity and simplicity of the message, we knew 'Stay Home' was going to be effective. It was always going to be much more difficult presenting the public with a myriad of different choices when it came to lifting the lockdown."
The prevarication over face coverings, however, continues to raise eyebrows. A recent study by the Royal Society found that the UK was trailing behind other countries on the issue, with the World Health Organisation having recommended the wearing of masks in public spaces back in June.
Coronavirus podcast newest episode
This week's announcement – which fits in with the Government's policy of reducing the social distancing rule to "one metre plus mitigation" – is designed to reassure shielded people who are preparing to be released from lockdown from the end of this month.
Number 10 also believes that encouraging people to use face coverings now means they will become second nature by winter. It follows a report warning that the coronavirus reproduction 'R' rate could rise by 1.7 by September, with a "reasonable worst-case scenario" of 119,000 deaths come January and February – twice as many as the first wave.
But in the event of a second virus wave, the consensus appears to be that a second lockdown "is not an option" – economically or otherwise – effectively leaving face coverings as Britain's last line of defence against coronavirus until a vaccine is found.
As has been the case throughout this crisis, Mr Johnson may once again be forced to sacrifice his libertarian principles in order to secure the nation's freedom from this deadly virus.

Proposed design of Westminster Holocaust Memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens
The government is facing legal action over its decision to build a national Holocaust memorial and learning centre in a Royal Park next to Parliament.
Secretary of State of Homes, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick MP is being challenged by the London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust over the process leading to a decision to build in Victoria Tower Gardens, beside the River Thames.
Jenrick’s department sought planning permission in January 2019 after former Prime Minister David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission, led by former Jewish Leadership Council chair Sir Mick Davis, recommended a national memorial somewhere central.

However a raft of heritage and environmental experts have warned that the damage and congestion that it could cause would outweigh the public benefit.
The Trust has played a leading role objecting to plans to build the memorial on “the last piece of publicly accessible land in central London”. The gardens are Grade II listed, sit alongside the Grade I listed Palace of Westminster, and lie partly within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the world-famous Westminster Abbey.
Working with other campaign groups, including Save Victoria Tower Gardens and the Thorney Island Society, the Trust has argued that ministers should reconsider the memorial’s location, citing the “undesirable impact” of the chosen design.
A planning decision was due to be taken by Westminster Council, which said it was minded not to grant permission, until Jenrick’s department stepped in and took over.
Successive prime ministers, including Theresa May, has maintained that the memorial will be built in Victoria Towers Gardens, and the current Conservative Government even made support for the memorial a manifesto commitment.
Last month lawyers acting for the Trust argued that the environmental impact of the proposals, which could cause great damage to the root systems of the Park’s 180-year old plane trees, was not carrying sufficient weight in forthcoming call-in inquiry, which is scheduled to begin on 6 October.
“The Trust contends that the proposals… represent an exceptionally serious intrusion into a very important green public open space,” argued its lawyers.
“The Trust has made clear that that it regards a new Holocaust Memorial with Learning Centre is a good idea, but that Victoria Tower Gardens is the wrong place for what is now proposed. This view is shared with many other objectors, including Westminster City Council and Baroness Ruth Deech.”
Deech is one of several Jewish peers to have expressed her objections to the memorial proposals, arguing that the £100 million should be spent on Holocaust education instead.
While lawyers for the Trust do not object to the call-in, they have called for a Judicial Review, and the case will be heard by Mr Justice Holgate at the High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division.

Khan’s London: Met Police Hiring ‘Racism Spotters’ to Examine Prospective Officers

London’s Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is currently hiring so-called ‘racism spotters’ to examine whether prospective police officers are prejudiced, as the city’s leftist mayor, Sadiq Khan, prepares to cut the budget of actual police.
The civilian staffed position has been in place since 2003, yet the salary for racism spotters has recently been given a 50 per cent bump, meaning that they can earn £150 per day, plus expenses. The pay for the position, which is part-time, would be equivalent to a full-time salary of £39,000 — ten thousand more pounds than the starting rate for actual police officers, according to calculations made by British newspaper The Sun.
Recent advertisements from the Cressida Dick-led Metropolitan Police were promoting 50 open racism spotter positions, with those hired to work for at least 25 days per year. Prospective hirees are not required to hold any experience or qualifications in the field to be employed, though it is unclear what would qualify someone to judge if an officer is racist or not.
“The Met obviously shouldn’t be hiring officers who hold overtly racist views. But it is clearly an unreasonable use of public money to pay community assessors such huge sums when the basic salaries for police officers remain so low,” David Spencer of the Centre for Crime Prevention told the newspaper.
The pay increase was also criticised by the research director for TaxPayers’ Alliance, Duncan Simpson, who said: “A 50 per cent, taxpayer-funded pay hike is extraordinary given most people are facing a financial squeeze.
“All areas of the public sector, including the police, need to remember that every penny they spend comes from taxpayers, who are already paying the biggest tax burden for 50 years.”
In response to the revelations, a spokesman for the Met said: “To compare the day rate of casual workers with a salaried police constable, with the pension and allowances that attracts, is overly simplistic.
“Assessors also represent the diverse communities of London. It is in everyone’s best interest that we attract, recruit and retain the very best officers,” the MPS added.
Last week, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced that he will be looking to cut the budget of the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), and the fire brigade, among other public services amidst budget shortfalls due to the Chinese coronavirus.
Police forces nationwide have been coming under increasing pressure in recent months amid the coronavirus lockdown, and then the emergence of at-times violent Black Lives Matter protests.

Re: BRITAIN NEWS AND ALERT's
London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced today that he is creating a commission that will judge whether or not all of the city’s statues, monuments, plaques, street names, and the names of public buildings properly reflect “diversity.”
Khan’s move comes after rioters at a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Bristol on Sunday tore down a 125-year-old statue of Edward Colston and threw it in the city’s harbour, as previously reported by Voice of Europe. Police refused to intervene against the rioters on the grounds that they “understand” why the rioters did it.
The Mayor made the announcement while being interviewed by the British media today. The institution will be named the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. The Commission will be co-chaired by Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries Debbie Weekes-Bernard and Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries Justine Simons. Historians, council members, as well as community leaders and leaders in the arts will also sit on the Committee but have not yet been named.
He said that the Commission’s purview will be to examine all of the city’s landmarks for connections to slavery, according to a report by The Guardian. Landmarks which the Commission decides “do not reflect London’s values” will be removed.
Khan declined to name any specific landmarks that he believes should be eliminated, saying that will be a matter for the Commission to decide.
The Commission will also be able to intercede in discussions about the construction and naming of new landmarks and monuments.
“It is an uncomfortable truth that our nation and city owes a large part of its wealth to its role in the slave trade,” Khan said during the interview. “And while this is reflected in our public realm, the contribution of many of our communities to life in our capital has been wilfully ignored. This cannot continue.”
“The Black Lives Matter protests have rightly brought this to the public’s attention, but it’s important that we take the right steps to work together to bring change and ensure that we can all be proud of our public landscape,” he added.

[ltr]Well, blow me down! The Telegraph finally gets it ... perhaps they realised they were losing too many readers by taking the knee to domestic terrorists?[/ltr]
[ltr]The rapid spread of protests across the West under the Black Lives Matter banner has left a political breathlessness from Baltimore to Berlin. Those in positions of authority are scrambling to show they are addressing endemic racism, and in the commercial sphere, not ending up on the wrong side of the debate and risking Twitter storms and boycotts. In a world where nothing is exempt from moral judgment, being on trend means signing up to radical political movements.[/ltr]
[ltr]That is what Black Lives Matter is. Don’t take my word for it. Take theirs. The form of words that appears on most online posts connected to the group riffs on ‘the black radical tradition’ which counts among its past contributors the Black Panther Movement and Malcom X. BLM happily self-identifies as a neo-Marxist movement with various far left objectives, including defunding the police (an evolution of the Panther position of public open-carry to control the police), to dismantling capitalism and the patriarchal system, disrupting the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure, seeking reparations from slavery to redistribute wealth and via various offshoot appeals, to raise money to bail black prisoners awaiting trial. The notion of seizing control of the apportionment of capital, dismantling the frameworks of society and neutralising and undermining law enforcement are not just Marxist, but anarchic.[/ltr]
[ltr]Desperate to appease a vociferous clamour, celebrities and companies are queuing up to endorse. [ltr]UK tea manufacturers, whose business was built on the back of slavery and operate under neo-colonial plantation models where tea is grown and picked through agrarian toil in the developing world to be shipped for production, packaging and profits in the West have jumped on the hashtag #Solidaritea. Post-truth absurdity is where we have reached. Yet as companies commercially conflate the tagline Black Lives Matter, with the movement Black Lives Matter, momentum builds for an organisation with little scrutiny or accountability, that is able to mobilise millions and encourage, wilfully or not, outpourings of vandalism, looting and violence across the West.[/ltr]
[ltr]With enormous sums of money flooding in - BLM had already received over $100 million from [Soros's] Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation and Borealis Philanthropy among others - and many written aims straight from the Communist copybook, there is surely reason for concern. Black Lives Matter is a somewhat amorphous and decentralised movement, allowing international chapters to set up under their banner. Not having a structure, a figurehead or centralised financial control means there is absolutely no accountability. Nobody to call for an end to violence, while providing a moral shield behind which perpetrators of crime can feel emboldened.[/ltr]
[ltr]But decentralisation does not mean disorganisation. Even with a captive audience under lockdown filled with frustration, sparking a range of parallel protests across the West still demands highly skilled choreography. The sort of operation that requires thousands of avatars to flood social media platforms with calls to action, that can target and penetrate entire demographics simultaneously across a range of countries. It can be achieved using extremely high level, sensitive intelligence equipment of the kind deep state operatives have access to.[/ltr]
[ltr]Throughout history civil rights movements have been either aided and abetted or exploited by Communist foreign actors, from the American civil rights movement to apartheid in South Africa. By sowing discord in countries, socialist activists have hoped to nurture fertile grounds for socio-political fecundity. It is well within the realms of possibility that state-backed cyber warfare emanating from Russia and China would want to exploit and exacerbate mounting discontent while the West is still reeling from the pandemic.[/ltr]
[ltr]A once small American movement that witnessed bursts of activity after individual cases of perceived police brutality has become the most prominent protest movement in Europe, and polarises societies wherever it goes. Unlike predecessors that often fell on the swords of their figureheads, this movement remains impervious to the accountability of a leader, because there are many. What we do know of the few founding members is that many are connected to radical Left organisations.[/ltr]
[ltr]An FBI report released in 2017 found that attacks on police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dallas, Texas were influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement, with 28 pe rcent of those who used deadly force against police officers motivated by a hatred of police. An unclassified FBI study following the Dallas cop-killing spree of 2016 that left 5 officers shot dead reported departments and individual officers increasingly taking the decision to stop proactive policing amid concerns that anti-police defiance fueled in part by movements like Black Lives Matter had become the “new norm.”[/ltr]
[ltr]The sight of missiles being thrown at unarmed British police, with ntire ranks forced to retreat from a baying mob should leave anybody who values national and community security with chills. Footage of an attack against a police officer and his colleague in Hackney attempting to apprehend an assault suspect showed members of the public filming the incident while one joined the fracas with a baseball bat. As statues are torn down and lists of demands are drawn up, sleepwalking towards lawlessness must terrify many members of the public.[/ltr]
[ltr]The difficulty in raising criticism or calling for scrutiny of the movement, despite pulling in unimaginable revenue and endorsement from the biggest corporates, biggest names and most prominent political appeasers, is that it leaves the accuser open to being censored and attacked as a racist. As the movement establishes organised chapters across the West, is emboldened to make explicit commitments to extreme forms of socialism and anarchy, and generates a head of steam against the very structures and protections that have guarded Western society for decades, if all opposition is silenced and checks and balances swept aside, reversing a nascent tidal wave of mob rule will take significant and disturbing levels of force.[/ltr]
[ltr]I support those who genuinely want to make the world a less prejudiced and more equal place, but there are many reasons to be concerned that Black Lives Matter is not enabling this, and instead is fostering division, chaos and destruction designed to bring the West to its knees - something that will harm the very people the movement purports to protect.[/ltr]

Former UK prime minister calls for coronavirus digital IDs to prove ‘disease status’
'Unless you're able to record some of this data in a way that people can use it's going to be difficult to go back to anything like a near normal in things like transport,' said Tony Blair.

UNITED KINGDOM, June 11, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair has called for the creation of digital IDs to track “disease status” as part of the plans for restarting international travel after the global coronavirus crisis.
Blair, who now leads the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, said in a recorded message digital IDs were a “natural evolution of the way that we're going to use technology in any event to transact daily life, and this covid crisis gives an additional reason for doing that.”
“I could be wrong about this, but when I can look at for example how you restart some businesses, how you restart international travel…I think people's disease status, for example have they been tested? What is the result of that test? Have they had the disease? Do they have the disease? I think unless you're able to record some of this data in a way that people can use it's going to be difficult to go back to anything like a near normal in things like transport,” Blair said.
An article published in Forbes last month said that future air travel could involve “no cabin bags, no lounges, no automatic upgrades, face masks, surgical gloves, self-check-in, self-bag-drop-off, immunity passports, on-the-spot blood tests and sanitation disinfection tunnels.”
“Digital technologies and automation will play a critical role in the future of air travel,” Forbes predicted.

“The need to reduce ‘touchpoints’ at airports implies mandatory use of biometric boarding that allows passengers to board planes with only their face as a passport.”
The Forbes article noted that a number of airlines including British Airways, Qantas, and EasyJet are already using the technology.
Earlier this week an article published in The Guardian warned that proof of immunity to the coronavirus could be used to create “a new class system.”
“Experts predict that if [coronavirus] survivors are found to be immune, they could perform a range of jobs and services – such as volunteering in hospitals and nursing homes, caring for coronavirus patients and working in shops and food processing plants – risk-free,” journalist Miranda Bryant wrote.
“And, depending on how authorities, business and society at large respond, they could also be entitled to greater freedoms.”
Bryant pointed to Chile issuing “release certificates” to people who “complete quarantine after testing positive” for the coronavirus and comments from Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Ezekiel J Emanuel supporting the idea of immunity “certificates” or “passports.”
Emanuel is advising former Vice President and 2020 candidate Joe Biden. Fauci has been director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades and is one of the top people leading President Donald Trump’s coronavirus response.
Even left-wing groups such as The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have cautioned against plans to introduce coronavirus “immunity passports.” In an article published last month, senior members of the ACLU argued that immunity passports could “harm public health, incentivize economically-vulnerable people to risk their health by contracting COVID-19, exacerbate racial and economic disparities, and lead to a new health surveillance infrastructure that endangers privacy rights.”
“An immunity passport system is fundamentally different from a regime whereby employers routinely test workers for COVID-19 or screen for symptoms, to ensure that no one with active infection is entering a workplace. In the latter system, only contagious workers are prevented from going to work and only for the period of time in which they are contagious,” the article continues.
“But an immunity passport system would divide workers into two classes — the immune and the non-immune — and the latter might never be eligible for a given job short of contracting and surviving COVID-19 if an immune worker is available to take the slot.”

Royal heartbreak: How Princess Anne’s ex-husband kept illegitimate daughter secret
After stepping away from Royal duties this year, the couple have been residing in Los Angeles since the coronavirus lockdown went into place around the world.
But despite the deadly virus delaying plans to launch their new non-profit organisation, the couple have quietly been planning their next moves to support the movement, according to Harper’s Bazaar.
According to Omid Scobie, who has well-placed sources close to Meghan and Harry, the couple have had “meetings behind the scenes with people on all levels” to make sure they are educated and connected with issues such as police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement
A source said: “Harry and Meghan have been having private conversations with community leaders and people at every level, as well as friends and family, about this issue since the start of recent events.

“By speaking to as many people and organisations as possible, it has been a way for them to feel connected to everything that’s going on and lear more about the issues surrounding it.”
This week, Meghan broke her silence over the death of Mr Floyd in a video to students of her former school, Immaculate Heart High in Los Angeles.
In the video, she described it as "devastating" as she urged people to speak up about their own experiences.
Meghan said: "The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing. Because George Floyd’s life mattered, and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered, and Tamir Rice’s life mattered.

Re: BRITAIN NEWS AND ALERT's
BREAKING Please SHARE just some of the organisations attending, to help protect our countries history Breaking: Please share to make everyone aware...Up to 35,000 ex forces personnel and football fans are travelling hundreds of miles to “defend” memorials at the weekend, campaigners have said.
There are concerns that thousands are mobilising to attend a “patriotic unity” event at Winston Churchill’s statue in Westminster on Saturday morning, in response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests.
Senior ex forces staff, ex soldiers and football supporters are among those supporting a “defend our memorials” event, which is being publicised with pictures of “Churchill is a racist” graffiti that was daubed on the statue last Sunday.
Police sources said that the Met would decide how it would respond over the next 24 hours, including whether to let the event go ahead as billed. A spokesperson for the force added: “We’re aware of a number of protests are due to take place.”
Some fear that police could be put in the difficult situation of having to keep two sets of protesters apart while trying to maintain public order.
Saturday’s Churchill statue protest is organised by the Democratic Football Lads Alliance (DFLA), a network that emerged in response to the 2017 terrorist attacks in Britain that has grown in size considerably since 2017..
Earlier, its two biggest marches attracted more than 75,000 people. The group was thought to have lost momentum until it was reignited by recent events which have inspired a huge number of people to stand behind the alliance to try to stop the violence our infrastructure is being subjected to.
The growing tensions prompted a standoff in the Hertfordshire town of Hoddesdon on Monday, where a group made Nazi salutes and shouted: “Why don’t you go back to Africa?” at a BLM protest as they converged in the afternoon. Small groups have gathered elsewhere, such outside the cenotaph in Hull on Wednesday.
One supporter of the new DFLA said " We intend on protecting our heritage from the barbarians who think it is ok to desecrate the memory of our forefathers." "Our country went to war to protect it's people from this kind of atrocity". "Behaviour that's no better than ISIS who also believe it is ok to destroy sacred monuments. It's very clear that the police allow the desecration of these monuments because of the current laws that allow protesting. A protest. The kind that are legal, are allowed but we feel. After a week of desecration, and violence that the Police have lost control. That much is clear." We intend on redressing the balance"
"I would suggest if people want peace, they return home and stop what they are doing." "This Black Lives Matter, is no more than an organisation who are using a right to peaceful protest to terrorise the population of the UK, into submission.
"This is not a counter protest against black lives matter it is not focused on people of colour, it is a protection mission" "If any violence, of any kind is is gestured toward any policeman, structure or monument or member we will respond in kind."
"We are here to protect our union. Not to destroy any part or member of it, unlike some behaviour we have seen in recent weeks!"

Are just some of the organisations attending, to help protect our countries history

Colston, Clive, Rhodes and Picton - the statues under fire for their troubled pasts

Monuments from Edinburgh to Bristol have been spotlighted for the controversial characters they depict amid revived debate about racism in Britain.
Edward Colston, the 17th century slave trader, was the first to be demoted when his statue in Bristol was torn down by protesters at the weekend, and dunked in the nearby harbour.
Inspired by the move, thousands of people then signed a petition to remove a long-contested statue of imperialist Cecil Rhodes at Oxford University's Oriel college.
A statue of Sir Thomas Picton is also under fire in Cardiff - a man celebrated for being the highest-ranking officer killed at Waterloo, but also condemned for earning much of his fortune through the slave trade, killing dozens of slaves, and standing trial for ordering the torture of a 14-year-old mixed-race child.

In a letter to Cardiff City Council asking for the memorialisation to be removed, city mayor Dan De'Ath also pointed toward the "highly brutal regime" led by Picton during his governorship of Trinidad.
He then drew upon a quote from WalesOnline, which had called Picton "a monster".
Petitions have also been launched in Edinburgh and Shropshire - the former to bring down a statue of slave owner Henry Dundas, and the latter for 'Clive of India' Robert Clive.

The focus on taking down the monuments has come as a development from demonstrations starting in the US, later spreading across the world, in calling for deeply-embedded racist ideals to be addressed.
It follows the death of black man George Floyd two weeks ago in Minneapolis, whose final moments were caught on camera as he lay face down - unarmed and handcuffed - in the street, with a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on his neck.

Back in the UK, Labour leader Keir Starmer told LBC's Nick Ferrari that he believed Colston's statue should have been "taken down a long, long time ago," although he did not agree in the way in which it was carried out.
Speaking to the wider issue, he added: "You can't, in 21st century Britain, have a slaver on a statue [...]
"This was a man who was responsible for 100,000 people being moved from Africa to the Caribbean as slaves, including women and children, who were branded on their chests with the name of the company that he ran.
"Of the 100,000 people, 20,000 died en route and they were chucked in the sea."

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson's spokesman said the act of pulling it down was an "unacceptable" act, warning that the police "will want to hold to account those responsible".
He added: "The PM absolutely understands the strength of feeling, but in this country we settle our differences democratically and if people wanted the removal of the statue there are democratic routes which can be followed."

UK residents stunned by “Once in a Lifetime” fireball exploding over British Isles
(ETH) – The International Meteor Organisation (IMO) recently received more than 50 reports from British residents who witnessed what they are calling a “Once in a Lifetime” event when a fireball exploded over the British Isles according to Express.
Many of the witnesses were anticipating the launch of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon on Saturday when instead they witnessed the fireball streaking across the sky. One man named Michael told the IMO: “I had been watching the ISS pass over and as I went to go indoors I saw the potential fireball – bigger than a normal shooting star with a visible orange fire but burnt out quickly.”
Another witness named Belinda added: “It was an awesome sight and a once in a lifetime chance.” The IMO explained that “Fireballs are meteors that appear brighter than normal and “Due to the velocity at which they strike the Earth’s atmosphere, fragments larger than one millimeter have the capability to produce a bright flash as they streak through the heavens above. “These bright meteors are what we call fireballs and they often strike fear and awe for those who witness them.”

Re: BRITAIN NEWS AND ALERT's
(OPINION) PNW – The United Kingdom has proposed a plan to create a new club of democratic nations to address the reliance of the world on Chinese technology partners for 5G. The COVID-19 crisis has revealed the dangers of relying on outside sources for infrastructure needs but more importantly to many nations is the security risk associated with giving Chinese tech companies so much control over what many believe will be a new technology boom reaching every aspect of our lives.
5G technology will do much more than just give us faster download speeds and low latency. Through it’s increased capacity and connectivity for billions of devices—especially in the areas of virtual reality, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence it has the potential to create a network that can connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.
Those countries who can create the infrastructure and roll it out nationwide first have the greater potential to lead in many areas that will have global implications for decades to come.
Such fears have led the US in recent months to take action against Huawei, China’s first global tech brand and a maker of network equipment and smartphones. It is now prevented from doing business in the US, as it believes the company is being used by the Chinese leadership to serve their interest instead of the countries it is building it for.
The UK has also launched an inquiry into Huawei’s involvement in the country’s mobile network upgrade in the wake of US sanctions against the company and has now proposed a far more reaching solution – the ‘D10’. The ‘D10’ club of democratic partners, which would include G7 countries – UK, US, Italy, Germany, France, Japan and Canada – plus Australia, South Korea and India would aim to create alternative suppliers of 5G equipment and other technologies to avoid relying on China.

Residents Voice Opposition to 1,000-Capacity Mosque on London’s Iconic Piccadilly Circus

A bid to build a 1,000 capacity “mega-mosque” in one of London’s most iconic buildings has been met with a rash of last-minute objections from locals, with concerns citing its close proximity to the city’s world-famous historic gay quarter.
The plans submitted to the City of Westminster Council surround the Trocadero building [pictured, above] on Picadilly Circus in London’s cultural hub in the West End. Under the new design, the basements and part of the ground floor would be converted into a 1,000 capacity mosque.
The property is owned by Malawian-born, London-based developer Asif Aziz, and the conversion of part of the iconic building is being shepherded by his registered charity the Aziz Foundation. Among the trustees of the charity are Mr Aziz himself, and Talat Malik — a trustee of the Wimbledon mosque.
Stating that nurturing “disadvantaged communities who often lack representation and voice in mainstream society” is part of the mission of the foundation, the planning documents submitted to the council names Sheikh Sulayman Van Ael as the intended imam for the mosque. Sheikh Van Ael is a self-described Dutch Muslim convert who was born into an atheist family but found his faith in his teens.
While the application was lodged with the council in February, the council has seen a late surge of opposing statements to the plan from Londoners expressing apparently serious concerns. One of those is author and former Westminster City councillor JP Floru, who told Breitbart London the scale of the development and its proximity to the Soho district were worrying.
Soho, historically a centre of London’s gay and alternative culture and whose bars, cafes, and nightclubs lie just yards from the Trocadero building, has been cited in a number of responses to the planning application.
Mr Floru said: “This is not a small scale mosque catering for local demand. There are fewer than five per cent of Muslims living in this area, who use small local mosques. Setting up a 1,000 capacity flagship mosque right next to the long-standing gay district of Soho will damage local cohesion.
“The area is already heavily overcrowded — imagine adding another 1,000 after Friday prayers — road traffic will have to be stopped. Let’s keep central London for entertainment use, and place new large places of worship where there is local demand for it.”
Adding a remark on the apparent attitude of the council to the application, Floru added: “Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that local councillors have kept quiet about this application, and this controversial proposal for a mega-mosque on Piccadilly does not seem to have been in the media at all.”
The application, for its part, refutes the claim that the mosque is not needed, claiming other nearby mosques are already full to the point of turning away worshippers. Further, it claims as many as one-fifth of residents of Westminster are of the Muslim faith, and the document anticipates this figure will be found to be higher at the time of the coming 2021 census.
Reflecting the expressed concerns of the impact the mosque would have on the local environment, and the surge in traffic it could attract, Breitbart London reached out to the City of Westminster councillor with responsibility for these policy areas. No response had been received at the time of publication.

COVID–19: The Big Pharma players behind UK Government lockdown

"To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men their individualism, loyalty to family tradition, national patriotism, and religious dogmas."

In Part One of Who controls the British Government response to Covid–19?, I began an investigation into the individuals and entities that are, effectively, driving the UK Government response to Covid–19. In Part Two, I will expand upon the Big Pharma and Artificial Intelligence (AI) links already identified and will introduce new connections that appear to have considerable bearing upon the UK Government's Covid–19 strategy. I will expand upon the Bill Gates connections to the various organisations that are advocating global immunisation.
The UK Government chief medical adviser and Chief Medical Officer for England, Chris Whitty, is saying that a return to “normal” in the short-term is “wholly unrealistic”. Whitty is telling us that the “highly disruptive” social distancing policy will be in place “for really quite a long period of time”. “Highly disruptive” is a euphemism for the devastation of the world economy and the horrifying knock-on effect — an estimated 50% of the world workforce are at risk of losing their livelihood.

The UK Government has been promoting the concept of “immunity passports” as a means of loosening the draconian lockdown measures. It is very possible that facial recognition technology may dictate who can exit lockdown and return to work. To get a passport, individuals must upload an image of their face to the app along with their ID (passport or driving licence). They are then tested to ascertain if they have had the virus and developed immunity. The app will then generate a QR code, which the employer will use to verify ID and immunity before allowing the employee back to work.

On this day ten years ago, a hot-mic moment by a fading prime minister changed the course of British history and became one of a thousand straws that contributed to the breaking of the political consensus’s back, playing its part in both Brexit and Boris Johnson’s 2019 landslide election.
On April 28th, 2010, Labour’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown was touring northern constituencies, campaigning for that year’s general election. Meeting a voter in the street, Mr Brown talked to Gillian Duffy, who listed among her concerns high levels of taxation and mass migration to Britain from the European Union.
Clearly dissatisfied with the encounter, Prime Minister Brown got into his car and was driven away. What he had forgotten was he was still wearing a radio microphone, so the television cameras could capture his visit.
Sharing his disgust of the 65-year-old widow with an aide, and inadvertently broadcasting it, he said: “That was a disaster… should never have put me in with that woman. Whose idea was that? … she was just a sort of bigoted woman. She said she used be Labour. I mean it’s just ridiculous.”
Caught in the act, Mr Brown later gave a strange sort of apology on national radio, explaining that he had found being taken to task over historically high levels of immigration as “annoying”.
This encounter only happened because — as a Sky News report of the time pointed out — Brown was coming under criticism for only talking to his own supporters. Given how well talking to an ordinary person in an unscripted meeting went, you can see why the political class still so carefully choreograph their forays into the outside world.
It was one of the most sensational hot-mic moments in history, and Gordon Brown found himself out of office within two weeks.
It has been claimed the ‘bigoted woman’ remarks, as they came to be known, changed the course of the 2010 election. Perhaps it did. Despite Brown’s contrite apology immediately afterwards, it dominated the last days of the campaign. With the political mood music set after 13 years of Labour government and so soon after the 2009 expenses scandal, perhaps Gordon Brown was never going to scrape by.
But the event certainly had further-reaching consequences. In one careless remark to a forgotten microphone, Britain’s only serious left-wing party showed for one horrifying moment its true face: the snarling, contemptuous reality of modern Labour elite that cannot stand its own supporters.
In the old world, Britain’s two establishment political parties could both depend on an absolutely rock-solid constituency of loyal, tribal, geographically-concentrated voters. Labour had its northern heartlands, the votes of today’s electors won from their great-grandparents a century ago amid great industrial cities and passed down generation to generation undamaged, despite the industry evaporating and the communities fracturing. The Conservatives had their Surrey stockbroker belt and the new middle classes who found their loyalty through Mrs Thatcher.
This rendered both parties safely able to ignore their core supporters, and able to bicker bitterly over the centre-ground where a small number of people, it was believed, would swing every election one way or the other. This had the obvious effect of bringing both Tories and Labour together, turning them into barely distinguishable centrist groups.
That was good news for the small number of people these parties were fighting over, but many in the unappreciated majority began to realise the parties they had loyally supported for years no longer resembled or represented them. Formerly working-class Labour had transformed into the sneering party of the wealthy and woke north-London metropolitan bubble, while the Conservatives had transformed from law and order to Heirs to Blair.
For the left, Gordon Brown vs Gillian Duffy killed the illusion. Ten years ago today, the mortar started crumbling from the so-called ‘red wall‘, the impenetrable line of traditional Labour strongholds in the north. Nearly a decade later, that wall would fall in the 2019 election with Boris Johnson’s landslide as ex-Labour voters voted Tory in droves.
It is also worth mentioning that Mrs Duffy voted for Brexit, as did millions of other people in what we now think of as former Labour heartlands. Those voters were instructed in no uncertain terms to vote for the European Union by their political masters in 2016, but rebelled — no doubt in part because they knew the not-so-secret contempt those leaders hold them in.

UK could shock the world if it bans sex-change surgery for children
Boris Johnson's govt has rightfully expressed concern that youth under age 18 are too young to make a 'transition' decision that they might later regret.
Mon Apr 27, 2020 - 6:28 pm EST
April 27, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) -- According to The Telegraph, UK Minister for Women and Equalities Liz Truss has announced that the British government will be taking steps to ban children from undergoing sex-change surgeries before age 18. This is a genuinely stunning move: While regular readers will know that I preferred Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the anti-Semitic socialist Jeremy Corbyn, I was not optimistic that Johnson’s government would actually enact any socially conservative policies.
It is a sign of the times, of course, that a law banning the genital mutilation of children with gender dysphoria is even necessary. The United Kingdom has seen a breathtaking spike of children identifying as transgender over the past several years — the British government vowed to investigate why there was a 4,000 percent increase in children seeking to “transition” in less than a decade back in 2018, and the British press has drawn attention to the fact that many who have chosen to transition have gone on to regret their decision.

At the moment, children under age 18 are permitted to begin “transitioning” as long as they have parental permission, but Truss has now stated that the Tory government plans to ban “genital reconstructive surgery” in order to “protect them from making those irreversible decisions” — at least until they are older. Trans groups, unsurprisingly, have pushed back, claiming that preventing children from making a decision that will dictate the course of the rest of their lives before they are legally allowed to drink, smoke, or vote is introducing “a new form of inequality into British medical practice.”
A representative of the trans group Mermaids, an organization that claims to support transgender children, stated that this inequality was transparent due to the fact that such a ban would be “effectively treating transgender teenagers as less capable than their cisgender peers.” This criticism rather misses the point, as presumably this ban would prevent anyone under 18, regardless of how they choose to identify, from undergoing a sex-change surgery.
Fortunately, the government appears to reject that view, with Truss stating that the move was aimed at “making sure that the under 18s are protected from decisions they could make, that are irreversible in the future … I believe strongly that adults should have the freedom to lead their lives as they see fit, but I think it’s very important that while people are still developing their decision-making capabilities that we protect them from making irreversible decisions.”

The details of the government’s plans have not yet been revealed (and won’t be until summer), and Truss only indicated that this is the path currently being planned while giving evidence to the Women and Equalities Select Committee earlier this month regarding reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. In addition to the proposed ban, Truss also stated that the government will be moving to protect “single-sex spaces,” which seems to indicate willingness to ensure that simply identifying as female will not be enough to access female-only facilities.
According to The Telegraph, Truss stated that the government would be working to protect transgender rights “whilst maintaining the proper checks and balances in the system.” This, of course, will not be good enough for trans activists, who state vehemently that denying biological males identifying as female access to female-only spaces, expressing concern that the transgender phenomenon among children is unprecedented and dangerous, and that saying “transition” — especially when pursued at a young age — can destroy lives renders you an ugly transphobe.
The government will be facing a firestorm from the LGBT movement in the months ahead, as this proposal marks one of the first significant government pushbacks to their agenda in years. I’m very encouraged that Johnson’s Conservative government appears to be willing to actually implement a common-sense agenda on this issue, but the trans movement is sure to utilize every weapon in their arsenal — and there are many — to stop this from actually becoming a reality. The good news is that the majority of people feel that the trans movement has gone too far on many fronts, and if the government presents its case as calmly and as reasonably as Truss has thus far, this is a fight they can win.
And if it can be done in the United Kingdom, it can be done elsewhere. We should all be watching these developments very closely.

An ancient water mill in Dorset, England has opened up commercial flour production to help feed the nation during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic after decades of operating as a tourist destination.
The Sturminster Newton Mill, which survived through the black plague, is believed by the museum that operates it to date back to Saxon times, with evidence of a water mill existing at the location as early as 1016.
The mill was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and continued to commercially produce flour until 1970 when it was converted into a tourist attraction. The mill continued to produce enough flour to serve tourists, however, when the national lockdown restrictions were introduced, the future of the mill was in question.
“We would have been milling, on the whole, about two days each month — that would have supplied us with enough flour to keep going throughout the whole of the season,” miller Pete Loosmore told the BBC.

“And then suddenly we had lockdown — and our first impression was that we couldn’t do anything with the mill because of social distancing,” he said.
But as reports came in of food shortages throughout the country, Mr Loosmore and his fellow miller Imogen Bittner decided to unleash the power of the old mill to help feed their fellow Britons.

Mr Loosmore, whose grandfather ran the mill for fifty years, said it would typically go through about a tonne of grain during a tourist season, but that production has shot up due to demand for grain from local shops facing shortages.
“This year we have got through the whole of that tonne in two to three weeks and we’re still chasing more and more grain,” he said.
“It’s been nice to bring the place truly back to life and back into something like it used to be when it was working six days a week,” he added.

UK: 550 illegal migrants arrive in the country via the English Channel during coronavirus lockdown
APR 26, 2020 8:00 AM BY CHRISTINE DOUGLASS-WILLIAMS17 COMMENTS
“Some 550 illegal boat migrants have reached British shores from France during the period in which the two countries introduced national lockdown measures to stem the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.”
Most of these illegals are coming across the English Channel from France. In January, it was found that most of those who were illegally crossing the Channel were Iranians. Before the coronavirus pandemic, only about 15% of them were being sent back, which indicates yet again the surrender of Britain to the hijra, at the expense of British citizens.
During the coronavirus pandemic, illegal migrants pose an additional health threat to the population, beyond security issues:
In camps in Calais and Dunkirk which house an estimated 1,500 migrants, at least 9 migrants have been confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus. Despite the fear of an outbreak in the camps, the British government is not testing every illegal migrant for the illness.
And demonstrating once again how incompetent the UK is with respect to immigration:
Migrants are… brought ashore and given the opportunity to apply for asylum — despite the fact that France is a safe, first world country — in line with European Union regulations which Britain is still bound by.
Unless the UK closes these loopholes, it is destined to continue along the path of Islamization.
“‘Someone Has to Have Brought It Over’ — 550 Migrants Land In UK During Lockdown,” by Kurt Zindulka, Breitbart, April 19, 2020:
Some 550 illegal boat migrants have reached British shores from France during the period in which the two countries introduced national lockdown measures to stem the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.
Data released from the Home Office revealed that at least 481 migrants illegally crossed the English Channel since the start of the British lockdown and an additional 69 people were brought ashore the week prior, despite France having already announced lockdown restrictions.
In camps in Calais and Dunkirk which house an estimated 1,500 migrants, at least 9 migrants have been confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus. Despite the fear of an outbreak in the camps, the British government is not testing every illegal migrant for the illness.
The former general-secretary of the Immigration Services Union (ISU), Lucy Moreton, told The Times that: “On a purely statistical basis, someone has to have brought it over”.
Moreton said that migrants were not being tested when they are brought ashore or when they are moved to local council areas, where they are rehoused while they are processed. The Home Office claims that any migrants displaying symptoms of the virus are tested, but Moreton warned that it was difficult to spot signs of the illness after the arduous journey over the Channel.
“When a Border Force vessel picks these people up, there’s no way of assessing symptoms. They are cold, wet and often seasick,” she said.
The Home Office figures do not count migrants that were caught on the French side of the channel and only represent those migrants that were actually detected illegally entering the country by the UK Border Force.
Attempting to enter the United Kingdom illegally by boat or other means does not mean that a migrant will automatically be deported. Migrants are instead brought ashore and given the opportunity to apply for asylum — despite the fact that France is a safe, first world country — in line with European Union regulations which Britain is still bound by.
In 2019, just fifteen per cent of all illegal boat migrants were deported.
People-smugglers in France have been charging £13,000 per person for crossing the Channel, up from £7,000 since autumn. In October, Breitbart London reported that the police in France were accused of assisting people-smugglers traffick migrants into Britain, notifying the criminals as to the best times to make illegal crossings.
Home Secretary Priti Patel has claimed that she is “determined” to halt the flow of illegal boat migrants over the English Channel.
“Criminal gangs are using false promises to take advantage of desperate situations and illegally smuggle people into the UK,” she said per the BBC.
“We are continuing to support the French to deploy extra patrols on French beaches, drones, specialist vehicles and detection equipment to stop these boats leaving European shores,” Patel added…..

UK Health Secretary thanks Muslims for “sacrifice” on St. George’s Day, makes no mention of the English national day
APR 26, 2020 9:00 AM BY CHRISTINE DOUGLASS-WILLIAMS19 COMMENTS
“Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked Muslims for their Ramadan ‘sacrifice’ on St George’s Day, but made no mention of the English national day itself.”
Yet another politician sold out to political correctness and is indulging in shameless kowtowing to the Muslim community. Dhimmitude has become the only way to avoid being called an “Islamophobe.” Matt Hancock clearly knows this.
St. George’s Day is the feast of the patron saint of England (and also parts of Portugal and Spain). It is a day on which traditionally there are displays of patriotism and celebrations of the English heritage. In this context, one aspect of the story of St. George is most significant:
Stories depict him as a Roman soldier who slew a dragon while rescuing a Libyan king’s daughter. He was however tortured and ultimately killed in….. the most severe purge of Christians in the Roman Empire — when he refused to renounce his faith.
“UK Health Sec Thanks Muslims for Lockdown ‘Sacrifice’ on St George’s Day, Doesn’t Mention St George’s Day,” by Jack Montgomery, Breitbart, April 24, 2020:
Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked Muslims for their Ramadan “sacrifice” on St George’s Day, but made no mention of the English national day itself.
Hancock, who as Secretary of State for the Department of Health and Social Care has arguably played the leading role for the British government in Boris Johnson’s absence — although the Prime Minister’s official substitute is Dominic Raab — neglected to mark St George’s Day in any way, or to offer a message to English citizens prevented from celebrating it properly by the lockdown regulations.
The beginning of the Islamic month of Ramadan, which fell on the same day, was another matter, however, with Hancock posting a video message thanking them effusively for their co-operation with the lockdown.
“This Ramadan, many Muslims who serve their country in the NHS [National Health Service] and in the Armed Forces and in so many other ways will not be sharing the joy of this month as they normally do,” he said.
“I want to say to all British Muslims, thank you for staying at home. I know how important the daily Iftar is, how important communal prayer is at night, and how important the Eid festival is.”
A St George’s cross flag — the flag of England, one of the four home nations that constitute the United Kingdom — did fly over Downing Street on Thursday, as has been customary every year at least since the last Labour government.
Commenters on social media who suggested Hancock had ignored Easter as well as St George’s Day were mistaken, however, as he did post a message wishing “everyone” a Happy Easter and thanking “everybody who is following the social distancing rules” at the time — although he appears to have made no specific reference to Christians, people being unable to attend church services, or any of the other important religious aspects of the holy day….

Prince Charles hailed Holocaust survivors and refugees as “living heroes”, praising them for the contributions they made to British society since the Holocaust.
The royal, a patron of Holocaust Memorial Day and World Jewish Relief, was among a host of public figures, faith leaders and politicians to pay their respects in video messages broadcast during this year’s ceremony, live-streamed on Monday and of which Jewish News was a media partner.
The Prince of Wales paid tribute to survivors and refugees, who went on to become “the leaders and builders of your community, active citizens and dedicated contributors to wider British society.”

“They have been and continue to be shining examples to the world of how it is possible to triumph over adversity. Whilst they may consider themselves the lucky ones, when so many did not survive, to us they are simply nothing short of living heroes, who were determined not just to survive but to thrive as they built new lives, new homes and new families here in the United Kingdom,” he said.
Over 60,000 people worldwide tuned in to watch the ceremony on YouTube and Facebook Live, which organisers say is expected to reach 200,000 in the coming days.
The annual day for Holocaust remembrance in the community coincided this year with the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen Belsen by the British Army.
The ceremony featured videos of six Holocaust survivors and refugees lighting a yellow candle, each in memory of those who were murdered in the Shoah.
They were Kindertransport refugee Sir Eric Reich, Theresienstadt survivor Joanna Millan, child refugee Isca Wittenberg, Auschwitz and Lieberstadt slave labour camp survivor Mindu Hornick, Auschwitz survivor Sam Laskier and Eva Clarke, who was born in Mauthausen concentration camp.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said the “world needs to heed the call of our Holocaust survivors to ensure that the Shoah will never in any shape or form happen again.”
Rabbi Mirvis discussed rising antisemitism in the past year but struck a positive note as he told the commemoration that “within the dark clouds of the coronavirus, we can see a silver lining… A sense of unity, unity in our communities, on our streets, in our towns, in our cities, national unity and global unity, as all of humankind faces covid-19 like one person with one heart.”
Among those who spoke at the ceremony, included Prince Charles, Sadiq Khan and Marie van der Zyl; President Reuven Rivlin, Rachel Riley and Luciana Berger, Mark Regev, Jonny Turgel and Robert Jenrick
Shoah educator Henry Grunwald, vice-president of Yom HaShoah UK, said Kaddish after a performance of El Malei Rachamim by Chazan Jonny Turgel, grandson to the late Gena Turgel, who met her husband upon liberation from Bergen-Belsen and became known as the “Bride of Belsen.”
“We don’t normally say Kaddish without a minyan, but the Kaddish which we say on Yom HaShoah is of enormous importance to survivors and to the families of survivors,” Grunwald told the livestream before reciting Kaddish.
Neil Martin, who chairs Yom HaShoah UK and produced the event, said: “Holocaust survivors and refugees are of course right now isolating in their homes for their safety, and may well have believed that this year the community won’t be able to remember on Yom HaShoah, in what might sadly be for so many of them the last of the significant anniversaries. It was vital therefore, that despite the obstacles we faced, and sadly the large number of coronavirus deaths hitting the Jewish community, that we still remembered… but virtually, and we were truly honoured that The Prince of Wales agreed to lead the tributes to the brave and inspiring survivors and refugees of our community. It may sound strange, but I’m proud we were able to use Yom HaShoah to bring some hope and togetherness to our community (and beyond) during this difficult time.”
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick extended his “good wishes to the Jewish community on this solemn occasion” and warned it had “never been more important to fight against the world’s oldest form of hatred.”
Israeli president Reuven Rivlin said that “while the coronavirus may have prevented us from marching from Auschwitz Birkenau, nothing can prevent us from passing on the memory of the Shoah to the next generation”, in an apparent reference to the postponed March of the Living.
He added: “As we fight the spread of the coronavirus, we must never forget the survivors among us. Not only must we make sure that all the needs are met, but we must also continue to listen to their story if not, in person, then through technology, as we are doing just now.”
Labour leader Keir Starmer stressed the importance of remembrance and added: “In the Shoah we see the worst of humanity but we also see the best in the hope and resilience of those that survived and rebuilt their lives, allowing the Jewish culture to make a significant contribution, not just here in Britain and across the world.”
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham recounted a conversation he had with Auschwitz survivor Ike Alterman, who shared his testimony “with more than a sprinkling of dry Mancunian wit”.
Alterman, Burnham said, told of “things that are the most horrific anyone can imagine and also the joy of arriving at Windermere at the end of the war, paradise of Windermere, as he described it, and the kindness of the British people who met him there.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan told of his “great regret that we can’t all come together in person today” but urged viewers watching at home to “remember together the 6 million Jewish men, women and children who were killed in the Holocaust, alongside so many other innocent people.”
Remembrance, he added, “feels more important than ever before as we confront the depressing reality of hatred, antisemitism and nativist populism on the rise, once again around the world.”
Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “As we gather, we not only remember the victims of the Shoah, we also pay tribute to the remarkable achievements of the survivors and refugees who fled the Nazis, many of whom will be watching from their homes today. We must unite as never before to ensure that these horrors can never be repeated.”
The commemoration also featured a virtual children’s choir recital, a speech from Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev, and readings by Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, Judge Robert Rinder and Game of Thrones actress Laura Pradelska.

Labour could face £8m legal bill over leaked antisemitism probe, report claims

The Labour Party could face an £8 million legal bill over multiple lawsuits arising from a leaked internal probe of antisemitism, a report claims.
The Mail on Sunday reported on speculation from “sources close to those identified by the leak”, compensation and legal costs could be “enormous” and range from £3 million to £8m. An unnamed MP told the newspaper the bill could “just bankrupt the party”.
The 860-page report found “no evidence” of antisemitism complaints being handled differently from other forms of complaint, or of current or former staff being “motivated by antisemitic intent”.

But it found that “factional opposition” in the upper echelons of the party towards former labour leader Jeremy Corbyn contributed to “a litany of mistakes” which hindered the effective handling of the issue.
Media lawyer Mark Lewis, of the firm Patron Law, said last week he was instructed to pursue libel claims and claims of data protection breaches against those publishing allegations contained in the report.
An internal inquiry has been launched into the leak and the Information Commissioner’s Office informed.
In a statement to Jewish News on Monday, Labour MP Margaret Hodge said: “It’s a crying shame that our new leader has been left with such a big financial mess to fix, particularly on top of everything else we face as a country and a party.
“I am sure Keir and the new leadership team will work to clean up Labour’s finances as part of the wider mission to get our house back in order.”
Meanwhile, Labour’s general secretary warned constituency parties sharing the report on social media or elsewhere “on an unauthorised basis will be immediately exposing themselves to potential significant civil and criminal liability.”
A Labour spokesperson told the Press Association last week the party “takes its responsibilities for data protection and the security and integrity of its data and systems extremely seriously.”
The Labour Party was approached for comment.

The Prince of Wales is to pay tribute to Holocaust survivors during tonight’s Yom HaShoah ceremony.
The heir to the throne’s pre-recorded address will be aired during the event, which will be live streamed online from 7.10pm. It will also be beamed directly into care homes ensuring Holocaust survivors can watch or listen to it.
The event, which marks the annual day for Holocaust remembrance in the community, this year coincides with the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen Belsen by the British Army.

In wake of the virus outbreak, plans to hold a ceremony attended by up to 10,000 people were put on hold. More than 100 charities came together instead, agreeing to broadcast a virtual commemoration.
In addition to a pre-recorded message by the Prince of Wales, there will also be a virtual children’s choir recital, as well as readings by Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, Judge Robert Rinder and Game of Thrones actress Laura Pradelska.
Other speakers this evening include the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
Neil Martin, who chairs Yom HaShoah UK, said: “Holocaust survivors and refugees are of course right now isolating in their homes for their safety, and may well have believed that this year the community won’t be able to remember on Yom HaShoah, in what might sadly be for so many of them the last of the significant anniversaries. It was vital, despite the obstacles we face, and sadly the large number of coronavirus deaths hitting the Jewish community, that we do remember… but ‘virtually’, and we are truly honoured that The Prince of Wales has agreed to lead the tributes to the brave and inspiring survivors and refugees of our community.”
Earlier this year, Prince Charles embarked on a landmark visit to Israel, during which he attended the Fifth World Holocaust Forum at the Yad Vashem.

A police officer in Lancashire, England was recorded threatening a British citizen with arrest on made-up charges during a coronavirus confrontation that has gone viral on social media.
Lancashire Police said that they are investigating an incident in which an officer told a member of the public that he would “make something up” in order to arrest the man. It is unclear what the reason was for the altercation, in which the member of the public accuses the officer of “harassing” him.
“If you want to fucking step to me and push your chest out and something like that then fine, I’ll lock you up. We’ll do that shall we?,” the officer told the man, Lancashire Live reports.
The unnamed man protested his innocence, claiming that he had done “nothing wrong” — to which the officer replied: “I’ll make something up. Public order. Squaring up to a police officer. Shall I do that?”
“Who are they going to believe me or you? Who are they going to believe me or you?” the officer warned.
In a statement released on social media, the police force said that it is clear from the video that the man “deserves an apology”.
“The matter is being investigated and has been referred to our professional standards department. It is clear from the footage the member of the public deserves an apology which we will attempt to provide him with today,” the force said.

Police forces in the United Kingdom have been widely criticised for their overzealous and heavy-handed approach to enforcing the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.
Last month, for example, Derbyshire Police was widely panned after posting a video of police drone footage of socially-distanced walkers in the Peak District alongside claims their exercise was “not essential”. The same police force dyed the ‘Blue Lagoon’ in Buxton black in order to deter the public from visiting the park.
The Police Federation of England and Wales has demanded that the government grant officers with the power to enter private residences without a warrant if they suspect a forbidden party to be occurring.
The police have been doubly criticised for their stringent enforcement of the coronavirus regulations against walkers and small groups of people from the same household sitting down far from others at the beach or in public parks since Thursday, after a huge number of officers and others, led by Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick, crowded onto Westminster Bridge in London to mass-clap carers with no requirement to wear masks and no regard for social distancing rules.
