Police step up patrols after antisemitic graffiti across north London
Met Police confirm heightened presence in north London after sickening spate of antisemitic graffiti. No arrests yet made.

Police patrols in Jewish areas were significantly increased this week after a spate of appalling incidents in north London and the United States.

In the capital, across Belsize Park and Hampstead, shops and a synagogue were vandalised with antisemitic graffiti, while 30 miles north of New York City a man burst into a rabbi’s house and stabbed five Orthodox Jews, two seriously.

The Chanukah incidents have shaken Jewish communities on both sides of the Atlantic, as security chiefs urged people to be vigilant.

The vandalism in London, which targeted South Hampstead Synagogue, referenced “9.11” which is assumed to mean the conspiracy theory of Jewish or Israeli involvement in the 9/11 attacks on the twin towers and Pentagon in 2001.

The Community Security Trust (CST) tweeted that the “disgusting antisemitic graffiti was clearly the work of someone determined to spread their hatred as widely as possible,” before urging authorities to fully investigate the matter.

Police Inspector Kevin Hailes said: “This is clearly a concerning incident and one we are taking seriously… Officers will be on patrol throughout the area in order to provide some reassurance to local communities.”

Meanwhile officials in the US said the multiple stabbings at a house in Monsey in New York State were an example of “domestic terrorism.” The motive of Grafton Thomas, 38, who was quickly apprehended in Harlem, was initially unknown.

Witnesses said the attacker pulled a knife “the size of a broomstick,” believed to have been a machete, as the country digested yet another violent attack against Jews, just a month after two gunmen killed several people at a kosher store in neighbouring New Jersey.

Police patrols in some areas of Brooklyn with large Jewish populations were increased last week, after 12 previous antisemitic incidents in recent weeks.

Governor Andrew Cuomo described the Monsey attack in the home of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg, as “domestic terrorism,” adding that the growing intolerance in US society was “a cancer”.

New Year’s Honours: 30 Shoah educators and survivors recognised
Chair of Holocaust Educational Trust joins survivors on prestigious list, in addition to director Sam Mendes, civil servant Tamara Finkelstein and Professor Eyal Weizman
By JENNI FRAZER
December 27, 2019, 10:38 pm

The 2020 New Year’s Honours List marks Britain’s most far-reaching tribute yet to Holocaust survivors and educators, with almost 30 names from all over the country recognised for their contribution to preserving memories of the Shoah.

Among those honoured is the chair of the Holocaust Educational Trust, Paul Phillips, whose work is rewarded with an OBE. The Trust’s chief executive, Karen Pollock MBE, said: “A member of our board for over a decade, chairman for a number of years, Paul Phillips has been instrumental in the growth and development of the Holocaust Educational Trust. An absolute joy to work with, we could not be more delighted that his efforts have rightly been recognised. Mazeltov, Paul!”

Nine people have been honoured with an MBE for their work: Ruth Barnett, William Bergman, Maria Beate Green, John Hajdu, Mindu Hornick, Lilian Levy, Eva Neuman, Gertrude Silman, who is life president of the Holocaust Survivors Friends Association and Professor Leslie Brent (posthumously).

A further 19 people are made medallists of the British Empire, or BEM, and not all are Jewish — the Cambodian-born Sokphal Din lost 60 members of his family to the Khmer Rouge and now works closely with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. Another BEM honoree, Rev John Fieldsend, is a retired Anglican vicar who converted from Judaism as a young man. He was born Hans Heinrich Feige, and escaped from Prague on the Kindertransport in 1939, aged seven. with his older brother Gert, leaving behind his mother Trude and father Curt.

Karen Pollock of HET noted: “Hearing from a Holocaust survivor has a far-reaching impact. Often referred to as the most memorable lesson of the year, our survivors inspire thousands upon thousands. As the Holocaust moves from living history to just history, the determination of these survivors to relive the most difficult moments of their life in order to inform future generations has never been more important”.

Het’s Paul Phillips with Lily Ebert BEM
The Cabinet Office, which releases the Honours List, said that this year’s awards included “inspirational people who have dedicated their lives to Holocaust and genocide remembrance and education, sharing their stories with schoolchildren around the UK. As survivors, they have demonstrated extraordinary personal resilience and commitment, championing tolerance and diversity, and playing a vital role in ensuring future generations continue to learn from the past”.

Tamara Finkelstein
Several other Jewish people feature in this year’s Honours List. Film and stage director Sam Mendes, whose mother was a British Jew, is knighted for his services to drama, while high-ranking civil servant Tamara Finkelstein, most recently director-general of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, or Defra, is made a Companion of the Order of the Bath.

Finkelstein said: “I’m very honoured to have been awarded a CB in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. I see this very much as a recognition of the amazing, talented and committed colleagues and teams I have worked with in my civil service career. The opportunity of a career in public service is a privilege that I continue to enjoy every day. Missing my parents at this moment, they would have loved to share it with me, I owe them everything.”

Haifa-born Professor Eyal Weizman receives an MBE for services to architecture, as does the chair of the Anna Freud Centre, the Hon Michael Samuel.

Labour leader: The Jeremy Corbyn replacement Boris Johnson will be most TERRIFIED of
THE race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as Labour Party leader following the disastrous general election result is heating up, and experts fear one candidate could quickly challenge Boris Johnson and even win votes from the Conservative Party.

Labour: Robinson grills Starmer on his bid for leadership
Jeremy Corbyn will quit as Labour Party leader over the coming weeks after overseeing the party’s worst general election performance in 35 years. Labour won just 203 seats and was crushed by Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party in what had been predicted to be one of the closest-fought general elections in recent British political history. Following the humiliating defeat, Mr Corbyn said: "I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward.

"And I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future."

Sir Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Yvette Cooper, Jess Phillips, Clive Lewis, Angela Rayner and Emily Thornberry are all in the running to be the next Labour leader and lead the party to the 2024 general election.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Ms Long-Bailey, who is a new generation of MPs on the left of Labour and is a close ally of Mr Corbyn, would likely have the backing of those currently in charge of the party.

Labour members are largely on the left of the party and make up most of those who get to vote for the next leader, so it could in theory be a straightforward race for Ms Long-Bailey.

But political experts have warned the leadership candidate Prime Minister Mr Johnson should fear most is Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer.

The Remainer is seen as the centrist candidate and is hotly tipped as both a good communicator with the British public and experienced negotiator, having been central to Labour’s talks with the EU over an alternative Brexit deal during 2019.

Dr Steve McCabe, associate professor and senior fellow at the Centre for Brexit Studies at Birmingham City University, told Express.co.uk: “Sir Keir Starmer looks sensible, and as a former Director of Public Prosecutions, who may be criticised for being too pro-Remain for those who believed in Leave and was sidelined during the campaign, will be able to present a more reasonable and rationally-argued case for social democracy and equality as opposed to Corbyn’s far left beliefs.

“Rebecca Long-Bailey would be ‘continuity’ Corbyn and most likely to stick with his ideology and pledges made in the 2019 manifesto. Starmer would prove much more palatable than Corbyn, as would Yvette Cooper.

“Whoever takes over has to show that they are willing to be different and ditch the overt socialism that was being proposed by Corbyn.

Alistair Jones, principal politics lecturer at De Montfort University in Leicester believes Sir Keir and Ms Long-Bailey have the “ability to engage with the public”, while both have the “attention to detail which is lacking in Boris Johnson and other senior members of the Conservative Party”.

Mr Jones said: “The Conservatives will fear Sir Keir Starmer and Rebecca Long-Bailey the most as both have the ability to engage with the public.

“Starmer has been particularly effective in debating Brexit. Long-Bailey has also been very prominent in campaigning.

“I Will Defend Christians Around The World”: Boris Johnson Christmas Message (Video)
By Bp-News-1 -December 25, 20191
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to defend persecuted Christians around the world and their ‘right to practise their faith’.
In his first Christmas message as Prime Minister, Mr Johnson said he wanted to remember those who were unable to celebrate the festival publicly or were jailed because of their religious beliefs.
He said his Government would ‘stand in solidarity’ with Christians everywhere.

In a video filmed in front of a Christmas tree in Downing Street, Mr Johnson said he wanted to wish everyone a ‘merry little Christmas’.
He added: ‘It’s that special time of year when, whatever has gone before, we can take an opportunity to celebrate all that is good in the world and to spend time with our friends and family. I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful break with your loved ones, sharing gifts and tucking into some delicious food.’
The PM praised NHS workers, police and civil servants who are working through the holidays, and expressed his gratitude to members of the Armed Forces on deployments, and to their friends, family and children who have an ’empty chair at the table’.

He stressed the day’s religious significance, both in Britain and other countries: ‘Christmas Day is, first and foremost, a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a day of inestimable importance to billions of Christians.
‘Today of all days, I want us to remember those Christians around the world who are facing persecution.
‘For them, Christmas Day will be marked in private, in secret, perhaps even in a prison cell. As Prime Minister, that’s something I want to change.

Queen's Christmas Message 2019

Queen Elizabeth II looks back on 2019 and some of the major milestones of the year including the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The Queen discusses how these monumental events started out with small steps and while the path may not always be smooth, the small steps can make a world of difference. Looking ahead to a new decade, the Queen remarked that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that lead to everlasting change.

FULL TRANSCRIPT
The Queen: As a child, I never imagined that one day a man would walk on the moon. Yet this year, we marked the fiftieth anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission.

NASA Command Centre: Still looking very good. You’re go. The eagle has landed.

The Queen: As those historic pictures were beamed back to Earth, millions of us sat transfixed to our television screens as we watched Neil Armstrong taking a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind. And indeed, for womankind. It's a reminder for us all. The giant leaps often start with small steps. This year, we marked another important anniversary, D-Day. On the 6th of June, 1944, some 156,000 British, Canadian and American forces landed in northern France. It was the largest ever seaborne invasion and was delayed due to bad weather. I well remember the look of concern on my father's face. He knew the secret D-Day plans, but could of course, share that burden with no one. For the seventy-fifth anniversary of that decisive battle in a true spirit of reconciliation, those who had formerly been sworn enemies came together in friendly commemorations, either side of the channel, putting past differences behind them. Such reconciliation seldom happens overnight. It takes patience and time to rebuild. Trust and progress often comes through small steps. Since the end of the Second World War, many charities, groups and organizations have worked to promote peace and unity around the world, bringing together those who have been on opposing sides. By being willing to put past differences behind us and move forward together, we honour the freedom and democracy once one for us at so a cost. The challenges many people face today may be different to those ones faced by my generation. But I have been struck by how new generations have brought a similar sense of purpose to issues such as protecting our environment and our climate. My family and I are also inspired by the men and women of our emergency services and armed forces. And at Christmas, we remember all those on duty at home and abroad who are helping those in need and keeping us and our families safe and secure. Two hundred years on from the birth of my great great grandmother, Queen Victoria, Prince Philip and I have been delighted to welcome our eighth great grandchild into our family. Of course, at the heart of the Christmas story lies the birth of a child, a seemingly small and insignificant step overlooked by many in Bethlehem. But in time, through his teaching and by his example, Jesus Christ would show the world how small steps taken in faith and in hope can overcome long held differences and deep seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding. Many of us already tried to follow in his footsteps, the path, of course, is not always smooth and may at times this year have felt quite bumpy. But small steps can make a world of difference. As Christmas dawned, church congregations around the world joined in singing, "It came upon the Midnight Clear". Like many timeless carols, it speaks not just to the coming of Jesus Christ into a divided world, many years ago, but also of the relevance even today of the angel's message of peace and goodwill. It's a timely reminder of what positive things can be achieved when people set aside past differences and come together in the spirit of friendship and reconciliation. And as we all look forward to the start of a new decade, it's worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps that bring about the most lasting change. And so I wish you all a very happy Christmas.

The Queen has been branded an “enemy of Islam” by jihadi preachers who are running riot in UK prisons, according to reports.

Shocking details have emerged of the spread of Islamic extremism amongst animates in lock-ups around Britain.

It has been claimed jihadis are holding makeshift Sharia law trials, circulating banned books and grooming young inmates.

One prisoner has claimed he even came across a group who pledged allegiance to terrorist group ISIS at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes, reports The Times.

He revealed how he allegedly witnessed inmates being lectured on how The Queen is a false monarch and enemy of Islam.

“Allah is the only monarch,” the preacher, a convicted murderer, declared.

FISHING VICTORY: Brexit to end 'greedy' EU ships plundering British waters - 'Our terms!'
BREXIT will help British fishermen get rid of "greedy" EU fishing vessels plundering British waters, Brexit Party MEP June Mummery said as she warned Boris Johnson to prepare for a fight with France and the Netherlands.

Boris Johnson given advice over UK waters by Brexit Party MEP
Brexit has been hailed by British coastal communities as the opportunity to free fishermen from the restrictions of the controversial Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Brexit Party MEP June Mummery echoed the sentiment telling Express.co.uk Britain's departure from the European Union will put an end to the "greed" some EU member states have shown towards British waters. But Ms Mummery also warned Boris Johnson to beware of demands to include fisheries in the trade talks the Prime Minister is expected to embark on with Brussels in the new year.

Ms Mummery said: "Mr Johnson promised a Canada Plus Plus deal – that means we leave. My advice would be, we leave, we take back full control of our waters and the fish.

"We then let things settle for a while. Obviously the French and the Dutch are going to be absolutely... I don’t know what’s going to happen there because the majority of the fish they catch is in our waters.

"We ‘ve already seen Ireland and Denmark demanding fisheries are part of any trade agreement and we know Emmanuel Macron wants to keep EU access in the terms of any trade deal."

French President Emmanuel Macron repeatedly warned the British Government he and other European Union leaders will ensure their countries face no disadvantage once a trade deal is signed with the UK.

Fishing is expected to become a contentious issue during trade talks next year, as French fishermen, as well as the Dutch and the Danish, have long capitalised on free access to British access.

Mr Macron is especially considered a key figure of concern as repeated warnings from the French fishing sector highlighted the risk of being completely shunned from UK waters.

But Ms Mummery insisted the existing relationship between EU and British fishermen will be allowed to continue – but on the terms of the British Government.

She continued: "I sell fish to the Dutch and they might want to fish here but they can’t – they’ve got to do it on our terms. And sustainably.

A record crowd of more than 4,500 descended on central London for the annual Chanukah in the Square celebration.

The gamble of holding the event at the weekend for the first time paid off as families joined the throngs in Trafalgar Square in record numbers.

Revellers of all ages enjoyed music from Mathilda Marks School and as well from the Kedma Band with Rabbi Marc Levene. London Mayor Sadiq Khan wished the crowds a ‘Chanukah sameach’ before asking where else in the world you’d see a Muslim mayor kicking off the Chanukah celebrations metres from a giant Christmas tree.

Khan, who has been at the forefront of speaking out against antisemitism in Labour and nationally, told the crowd: “This is your city and you’re going nowhere.”

The celebration was organised by Jewish Leadership Council, Chabad and London Jewish Forum, and media partnered by the Jewish News. It was compered by comedienne Rachel Creeger for the second consecutive year.

Another regular at the event is Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, who said to huge cheers: “Were proud to be Jewish. We’re proud to be BritIsh. We’re proud of our Torah tradition.”

Just weeks after his unprecedented intervention to call out Labour’s approach to anti-Jewish hate during the election campaign, he added: “We will do everything we can to eradicate the scourge of antisemitism. We will not be silenced.”

Israel’s deputy ambassador Sharon Bar-li welcomed to the stage Pnina Tamano Shata, the first Ethiopian MK, as a modern day “Maccabite”. She spoke of her delight at sharing the stage with the London mayor and pledged that Israel would always am stand alongside the diaspora in the fight against antisemitism.

Stands around the Square offered arts and crafts activities for kids and an olive press, as well as a variety of hot food to complement the thousands of free doughnuts distributed during the two-hour celebration.

Among the older party-goers was 95-year-old Rosie Kallenberg, who said: “How amazing that London lent Trafalgar Square to the Jewish Community today so we could all celebrate Chanukah! It was incredible to see such a beautiful, tall menorah in Trafalgar Square.”

JLC chief executives Simon Johnson said: “I’m thrilled at how many of our community came out to celebrate the first night in Trafalgar Square. The weather did us a favour and the atmosphere was one of the best I’ve experienced.”

What was particularly nice to see was how many generations were here with whole families altogether.”

Rabbi Bentzi Sudak, CEO of Chabad Lubavitch UK, said: “The new format as a Sunday afternoon family event really proved a hit. It was a true celebration of how we as Jews in London can literally dance in the street with a giant symbol of Judaism beaming through the city. Let’s continue to be proud of that. As former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks said: “Non-Jews are proud of Jews who are proud of their Judaism.”

Adrian Cohen, chair of the London Jewish Forum, said he was so pleased that the public marking of Chanukah in Trafalgar Square and across our great City has become a valuable and enduring tradition.

Vladimir Prudkin, co-founder of Mark Prudkin Fund For Culture And Art who sponsored the event:, said: “Our fund was named after the famous Jewish Soviet actor Mark Prudkin, one of the brightest Jewish actors that formed the most important Hebrew language theatre, the Habima.”

Much like Moshe, who didn’t get to enter Eretz-Yisrael, Mark Prudkin could not join his peers in Israel. The Mark Prudkin Fund is aimed at supporting and promoting Israeli art all over the world, and we continue to carry on with the mission of the great actor. This mission strived for over 100 years since Habima’s establishment. Today, at Trafalgar Square, we celebrate the unity of the Jewish people in the Free World.”

The event was also supported by Genesis Philanthropy Group, the Mark Prudkin Fund For Culture And Art and put together by Barkho Productions.

UK Government to ban public sector anti-Israel boycotts
Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas to everyone about to celebrate either festival!

The year has ended on a high note for supporters of Israel in the UK with the newly re-elected Conservative Government announcing in today’s Queen’s Speech that it is including a new law to ban anti-Israel boycotts and divestment by public sector bodies as part of its legislative programme.

I have issued the following statement on behalf of We Believe in Israel:

“We welcome the Government’s proposal to stop public institutions supporting boycotts against foreign countries and share the Government’s concern that the boycott movement against Israel has legitimised antisemitism and undermined community cohesion in the UK. We would urge people who want to see peace between Israel and the Palestinians to seek out the many productive and positive ways to pursue their activism and abandon the toxic prejudice of boycotts against Israel.”

The Jewish News covers the story here:

Prince Andrew could face fresh embarrassment in the Jeffrey Epstein saga next month if a second woman's claims against him come to light.

Andrew already faces accusations of sleeping with a 17-year-old Virginia Roberts in 2001 - who has frequently spoken out on the matter.

But now a second alleged sex slave of Epstein is being probed by lawyers who are looking to speak out in January if her claims prove plausible.

A source told the Sun: 'The claims will be thoroughly investigated. In January, if the lawyer believes her account to be credible and takes on the client, there will be a press conference.'

The woman claims she had sex with the Prince but did not accuse him of coercing her.

She has contacted lawyers for Epstein's victims, who will investigate her claims during a phone call in the next few weeks.

The Duke of York has always denied any impropriety.

It comes after it was claimed the Prince was used as bait by Epstein in an attempt to lure a 15-year-old girl to his Caribbean island.

A representative of Epstein is alleged to have offered the 15-year-old girl the opportunity to meet Prince Andrew as a way to get her to visit Little St James, owned by the American financier from 1998 until his death in August.

The woman, who refers to herself as Jane Doe 15, claims she had been sexually assaulted at Epstein's Zorro ranch compound in New Mexico in 2004 before the attempt to lure her to the Caribbean.

Epstein's team began grooming and manipulating the 15-year-old when she was on a school trip to New York with her drama club, according to Jane Doe 15s complaint which was filed in November to New York's southern district court.

She was taken to Epstein's Manhattan townhouse by one of his assistants where she was later given an iPod and photographed, claims made in court documents said.

Two weeks after this meeting she describes being subjected to a 'vicious, prolonged sexual assault'.

In a statement she claimed Epstein raped her in front of a wall of photographs of him shaking hands with world leaders and celebrities.

The 15-year-old was then offered by Epstein's representative to visit his Caribbean island which she declined 'out of fear' and did not meet Andrew or see the billionaire sex offender again, according to The Sunday Times.

These allegations were set out in a letter sent to Prince Andrew by Jane Doe 15's lawyer, Gloria Allred, last week.

Allred, who is representing five of Epstein's victims, urged the prince to provide 'sworn testimony' to the FBI in order to help the victims of Epstein 'find peace' and for the 'interests of serving justice'.

It comes after Andrew was under pressure to talk to US investigators after the BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis over his links to the sex offender.

In the interview, he claimed to have no memory of a photo apparently showing the pair at Ghislane's house ever being taken, and suggested it had been faked.

He also suggested that her memory of him 'sweating' was inaccurate because his experiences in the Falklands meant he suffered from a rare condition which left him unable to sweat.

On Wednesday, Virginia Roberts, who now goes by the surname Giuffre, posted a chilling message on Twitter announcing 'I am not suicidal' after giving a high-profile interview accusing powerful figures including Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her.

The 36-year-old, who claims she was a sex trafficking victim of paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, wrote: 'If something happens to me - in the sake of my family do not let this go away and help me to protect them. Too many evil people want to see me quieted.'

Ms Roberts posted the message in response to another user who suggested the FBI would try to kill her 'to protect the ultra rich and well connected'.

It comes after Epstein died in custody in the US while awaiting trial. An official autopsy concluded he hanged himself, despite persistent conspiracies and claims by high-profile pathologist Michael Baden that the evidence 'points to homicide'.

Ms Roberts gave an emotional interview to the BBC recently about the abuse she claims she suffered at the hands of Epstein and Prince Andrew.

She claims the prince abused her three times - once at Epstein's New York apartment, once on a yacht in the Caribbean, and once at the London home of Ghislane Maxwell, Epstein's alleged madam.

Speaking about her first alleged encounter with Andrew in London, she said she was taken to Tramp nightclub where she recalls dancing with the 'sweating' prince.

After leaving the nightclub, Giuffre said: 'In the car Ghislaine tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey.

'And that made me sick. I didn't expect it from royalty.

'I didn't expect it from someone that people look up to and admire - the royal family.'

Giving her account of what happened at Ghislane's house, she added: 'There was a bath and it started there and it led into the bedroom.

'It didn't last very long, the whole entire procedure. It was disgusting.

'He wasn't mean or anything. But he got up and said thanks and walked out.

In response to Giuffre's BBC interview, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said the Duke 'unequivocally regrets his ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein' and 'deeply sympathises with those affected who want some form of closure'.

They said 'it is emphatically denied that The Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation'.

The palace has also stated that any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors by the duke was 'categorically untrue'.

He was widely criticised for failing to show remorse for his association with the disgraced financier or empathy with Epstein's victims during his television appearance.

He has resigned from a large number of patronages and seen organisations he was once involved with sever ties.

Miss Roberts claimed in court papers in Florida that she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was aged 17, below the state's age of consent.

However, that allegation was struck out by a judge in 2015 for being 'immaterial and impertinent'.

Boris Johnson is on track to staggering victory in the election battle tonight as Labour's 'red wall' of Brexit-backing strongholds collapses.

The hotly awaited exit poll shows voters handing the Tories 368 seats, with Labour languishing on 191 - the worst performance in modern history. The SNP are predicted to get 55 and the Lib Dems 13.

The bombshell numbers comes after a month of brutal political struggle, as Jeremy Corbyn tried to sell his hard-Left agenda to the UK public.

Amid reports of 'mega' turnout and unprecedented levels of tactical voting by Remainers, Tories had become increasingly nervous that victory could somehow slip from their grasp, despite a slew of polls during the campaign having given them a double-digit advantage.

But the fears turned out to be overblown, as the party's mantra of 'get Brexit done' seemingly swung previously staunch Labour supporters.

Mr Johnson was fighting for votes to the last minute tonight, tweeting to urge supporters to cast their ballots as he campaigned in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat.

Going into today, Mr Johnson's lead in the polls was narrowing and he hoped to secure a swathe of northern Labour seats to give the majority that eluded Theresa May in 2017 - when she won 318 seats to Labour's 262.

But Labour sources claimed its traditional vote was holding up.

One veteran Labour activist, who had previously been pessimistic about the party’s prospects said their vote appeared to be holding up better than feared in ‘red wall’ seats.

‘It doesn’t feel like there’s any real move towards Johnson or away from Corbyn,’ they said.

‘I think we could easily see almost exactly the same result as last time.’

A Tory defending a south east marginal said turnout seemed ‘very high’ so far and the result could be ‘closer’.

However, another Tory fighting to keep a seat in the north east said they believed turnout was ‘good’ among their own supporters.

Another Conservative source agreed that turnout looked ‘mega’.

But they added: ‘No way to know if it's really up or if people are just voting early because it's winter and they don't want to do it after work.’

Mr Johnson's hope of getting Brexit done was hanging in the balance tonight as voters turned out in their millions to take part in the most important election of a generation.

Constituencies across the country reported  the longest queues seen at polling stations for years today, sparking fears of a Remainer 'youthquake' that could derail attempts to leave the EU.

Thousands snaked around the block outside schools, village halls, churches, pubs and other community buildings in the wet and cold to exercise their democratic right at the UK's 50,000 polling stations from 7am.
What is the exit poll?
The exit poll provides the first real indication of winners and losers from the most important election in a generation.

The figures have been produced by eminent pollsters including Sir John Curtice, Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher.

They have spent the day asking tens of thousands of people which way they votes, as they left 144 ballot stations across the country.

Individuals fill in a mock ballot paper and drop it into a mock ballot box to encourage truthfulness.

The team then calculates a prediction for seats won by the parties - which is kept a closely guarded secret until the polls close at 10pm.

The last exit poll in 2017 was a bombshell as it predicted - correctly - that Theresa May was being stripped of her overall majority.

La, la, la… all I want for Chanukah is that this political whirligig, merrygoround thingamajig should stop.

It won’t, of course, but no matter when you read this, be it before or after election day, my main emotion remains (oh, mustn’t use that word, it’s copyrighted to the anti-Brexit crowd), bloody angry.

I’m angry that I can’t, in all good conscience, vote for the political party I have put my faith in all my adult life. I’m angry at the lying and manipulation and the false choices offered by the manifestly dishonest leaders of both Labour and Conservative; and angry that the present, first-past-the-post system means that it’s almost impossible, except in rare circumstances. to hear a third voice.

I’m angry that the lazy candidates allegedly seeking my vote have barely bothered to make contact, apart from a derisory few leaflets from one party, one leaflet from another party and nothing at all from anyone else.

I’m angry at the unbelievable stupidity of some of the candidates who are putting themselves forward to represent us in Parliament – the Richard Burgons, the Mark Francoises, the yes, the Diane Abbotts (I no longer care that I’m dissing the shadow home secretary because for unstated reasons she has blocked me on social media). Angry at the entitlement of people such as Jacob Rees-Mogg who, mercifully, has been kept in a cupboard for most of this campaign.

But my anger is not confined to the torrid lunacy of those in public life.

I’m pretty angry at people who are apparently members of our community who use a Facebook group called Jewish Britain to denounce anyone and everyone who does not follow their hard-right rubbish.

Chief among  Jewish Britain’s targets, lately, is the Board of Deputies, closely followed by the left-wing group Yachad. According to these people the Board “are a bunch of armchair Zionists” while Yachad, in the same vein, are “just a bunch of fifth columnists”.

So hated is the Board by this crowd that they advocate setting up “a representative body” for “pro-Israel British Jews, called the Jewish Forum. It will always support the best interests of Israel and will never even contemplate the ridiculous notion of a ‘two-state solution’.”

The Board, they claim, is “obsequious” and its Jewish manifesto “shameful” — this is the manifesto, by the way, which the Board asked all candidates standing for the election to endorse.

Most breathtaking of all is the Jewish Forum’s intention to “repudiate using the word “Palestinian”. I really wish I couldn’t imagine what words the Forum would prefer to use.

I daresay that, like Diane Abbott, the Forumites have already written me off as a lost cause, and I certainly would hope so. But before they self-detonate in an explosion of self-righteous fury, I do have to wonder at the pot and kettle nonsense of calling the Board of Deputies “armchair Zionists”.

For what are these people if not armchair Zionists, taking refuge behind a keyboard to abuse the dedicated Board activists?

I’m sure that they would point to their repeated street protests and ask where are the warriors of the organised Jewish community.

But, occasionally, you have to use a bit of seichel (common sense).

Either just go on aliyah and peddle your ludicrous theories there, or shut up.

There are other ways to catch a fish.
https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/jewish-britain-facebook-group-is-not-the-jewish-britain-i-know-or-want-or-like/
Meanwhile, my blood pressure is rising. But now I do know what I want for Chanukah — the dissolution of the Jewish Britain Facebook page.
Because, guys, this is not the Jewish Britain I know or want or like.

Trump, Bibi Corbyn and Boris
Trump, Bibi Corbyn and Boris
I’d like to recall the verse of the 1930s poet and critic Hilaire Belloc this week. Belloc was deeply dodgy on the subject of Jews, as it happens, but on another subject — lying — he was absolutely spot on.

Belloc wrote: “Matilda told such dreadful lies/it made one gasp and stretch one’s eyes/her aunt, who, from her earliest youth/had kept a strict regard for truth/attempted to believe Matilda/the effort very nearly killed her.”

In the three countries which matter most to us —Britain, Israel and America — the politicians who are either in charge or vying to be in charge are frequently outright liars. And the thing that mystifies me is that no one seems to care any more.

Let’s start with Donald Trump, frighteningly America’s president since January 2017 and set to run again for a second term. His watchwords are “fake news”, the term by which he has repeatedly dismissed anything he either doesn’t understand or with which he doesn’t agree.

We know that Trump gets almost all of his information from television, particularly Fox News. He has, over and over again, been exposed as a serial liar, but that doesn’t seem to have any deleterious effect on his electorate, even though he is now in the throes of impeachment proceedings, attacks which would end the career of any normal politician. But these are not normal times: and those who would support Trump for his apparently pro-Israel actions — such as moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, or declaring that America no longer regards settlements as illegal — should beware. This will end in tears, for Israel at least, if not for America.

Israel, next, and the desperately disappointing spectre of a prime minister who is being indicted on three serious corruption charges and whose response is to denounce the judiciary and law enforcement agencies which brought the charges. Benjamin Netanyahu, whose guilt or innocence has not, it is true, yet been proven, has nevertheless wriggled and struggled to the point where he is ready to push Israel to an unprecedented third election in the last several months. Can any normal electorate accept this? Are these normal times?

So, finally, to our own backyard, where it is hard to put a cigarette paper (supposing anyone used them any more) between Johnson and Corbyn for the sheer extent of lying taking place in their bid to stay as/become prime minister.

Johnson — I would rather not call him by his familiar first name, as though I were on intimate terms with him — appears to have lied repeatedly about almost everything, from the amount of money which staying in the European Union would cost the NHS, to the number of police he is ready to put on the streets. Not the least of his dissembling with the truth is the bizarre refusal to admit exactly how many children he has. It could be the four he had with his last wife, Marina Wheeler, or there could be other less legitimate offspring whom he may or may not acknowledge.

And Corbyn? Well, this newspaper’s readers need little reminder about the Labour leader’s lies, from his “present but not involved” line to his most recent claim last week that his party had dealt with all antisemitism cases, despite the Jewish Labour Movement pointing out that there are at least 130 unresolved cases, and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission is still producing a report on whether or not Labour is an institutionally racist party.

Last week the wannabe London mayor and former Tory MP Rory Stewart got it right when he told a Have I Got News For You audience on BBC that the public now believed that all politicians were lying to them.

“Matilda/Trump/Bibi/Johnson/Corbyn told such dreadful lies…” This will end in tears.

Mike Freer: Poster daubed with ‘300,000 dead’ may be about UK Jewish population
Tory hopeful for Finchley and Golders Green alerted Jewish News to the shocking vandalism on Friday with a week to go until election day
By JEWISH NEWS REPORTER

Mike Freer has been the local MP since 2010.
A Conservative politician in one of Britain’s most Jewish constituencies whose election poster was defaced with the words “300,000 dead” has said it may be a reference to Jews.

Mike Freer, who has been the Conservative MP for Finchley and Golders Green since 2010, and who is defending his seat, alerted Jewish News to the shocking vandalism on Friday.

“One of my boards previously defaced was done again last night,” he said. “This time ‘300,000 dead’ was written on it. I’m not sure what it is referring to but my heart sank when I thought the person might be referring to the Jewish population in the UK.”

Freer added that he had escalated it to the local police commander “who is, as ever, treating it very seriously”.

Antisemitic graffiti daubed over Freer’s election campaign board in Golders Green on Monday, with what resembles a swastika and the words: “Boris out! Hail Boris”.

Freer said: “I was upset to see it… It just shows that the poison of antisemitism is never far from the surface and it makes me more committed than ever to stand alongside my constituents and face down the bigots.”

Jewish politician Luciana Berger is challenging Freer in the constituency. She is standing for the Liberal Democrats, having resigned from the Labour Party earlier this year, citing concerns over antisemitism.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan: “One of Our Strengths Is Our Diversity”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan: “One of Our Strengths Is Our Diversity”
DEC 8, 2019 10:00 AM BY HUGH FITZGERALD53 COMMENTS
Sadiq Khan, the Muslim mayor of London, and a tireless apologist for Islam, had his usual reaction to the latest murders by Muslim terrorists in “the greatest city in the world.” For Sadiq Khan, the defense and promotion of “diversity” has become an obsession. Last summer Sadiq Khan earned the outrage of many Londoners for his expensive focus on this “diversity”; they discovered he now spends annually close to $2 million on”diversity” bosses for London Transport, far more than he does on employees devoted to keeping fares down, or on improving safety in the system.

Here’s Khan’s latest praise of “diversity”:

London mayor Sadiq Khan told reporters that diversity is one of the British capital’s strengths in the wake of the London Bridge attack, and that all great cities are targets for terrorists.

“Look, I’m mayor of the greatest city in the world, and one of our strengths is our diversity,” he told reporters shortly the attack by Usman Khan, a convicted radical Islamic terrorist who had been freed from prison on a tag after serving less than half of a 16-year term, which left two dead and three injured.

This insistence that “diversity is our strength” is the byword not just of Sadiq Khan, but of many European politicians, and above all, of Chancellor Merkel. It is stated as a given; no evidence need be offered. But why should we accept this assertion? Is all “diversity” a “source of strength”? What kind of “strength”? Start asking these questions, and you will not get a coherent answer, but merely self-satisfied repetition of the mantra that brooks of no disagreement. In Seoul, in Beijing, in Tokyo, in Warsaw, in Budapest, there is precious little diversity, and no one in those cities appears to be longing for it to arrive, so that those capitals can be more like the London of Sadiq Khan. London’s “diversity” finds its expression not just in the terrorist attacks that fill Londoners with anxiety, but in the crime wave of stabbings by Muslim criminals, in the “greatest city in the world.” The “diversity” that the 3.5 million Muslims have brought to Great Britain includes, as well, the grooming gangs in a dozen of its cities that have led to the ruined lives of tens of thousands of English girls, the victims of “diversity” whom Sadiq Khan appears not to have noticed.

“But we do know there are people out there who hate our diversity, hate what we stand for, and are trying to seek to divide us”, he added — although his grounds for appearing to suggest that terrorists despise Britain for being diverse were unclear.

Who are the people who are taught to “hate our diversity”? Surely it is the Muslims themselves, who read Qur’anic verses that describe them as “the best of peoples” while non-Muslims are “the most vile of creatures”? Why should Muslims wish to have anything to do with such people? The Qur’an further instructs them not to take Christians or Jews as friends, for “they are friends only with each other.” The doctrine of Al-wala’ wa-l-bara’ (Arabic: الولاء والبراء‎) is a concept in Islam, literally “loyalty and disavowal,” which signifies loving and hating for the sake of Allah. This type of love requires Muslims to love those who are obedient to Allah and to defend and assist them, and to hate those who are disobedient, which means all non-Muslims.

Muslims are thus taught not to integrate into a non-Muslim society, but instead are instructed in more than a hundred Qur’anic verses to fight, to kill, to smite at the necks of, to strike terror in the hearts of, non-Muslims. Is such a population a source of “strength” for British society, or is it, rather, a source of physical danger and societal disarray? We know the answer to this: look at the London that Sadiq Khan has helped create, and what his cherished “diversity” has meant to the social fabric, and to the physical safety, of Londoners.

Mayor Khan then flirted with controversy with a statement echoing an earlier, infamous former claim of his with respect to terror attacks — i.e. that “part and parcel of living in a great global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things” — by telling reporters: “Look, I know, speaking to colleagues around the world, mayors of other great cities, that we’re all targets for terrorists.”

So according to Mayor Khan, terrorism is something you’ve just got to accept, it’s the price we all pay for the privilege of living in a great city, we just have to prepare ourselves, there’s nothing much else to be done.

Some critics of the Mayor of London have suggested that such attacks only appear to be a feature of life in cities such as London, while in a relatively homogenous place like the Japanese capital of Tokyo they are exceedingly rare — although not entirely unknown….

Quite right: there are many homogeneous cities whose inhabitants are not impressed with those in the West celebrating “diversity”; they do not want it for themselves, and have made great efforts to prevent such “diversity” from being imposed on them. “Non-diversity” – homogeneity of the populace – is seen as a source of societal strength and safety in Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo, Budapest, Warsaw. What would Mayor Khan urge the Mayor of Tokyo to do – let in a million Muslims so Tokyo’s residents can enjoy the same benefits of “diversity” that Londoners do? Not a chance.

“[T]he message I want to send… is we are resolute, we stand united in the face of terrorism, and we will not allow anybody to divide us,” he insisted.

Who are “we” who “stand united”? Surely not those who are taught in their holy book to despise, hate, fight, and strike terror in the hearts of those who do not belong to the same faith? Sadiq Khan says “we stand united in the face of terrorism.” Has he taken a poll of Muslims? How does he know that they are “united in the face of terrorism” when they are told in several Qur’anic verses to “strike terror in the hearts of the Unbelievers”? And what are Muslims to think about terrorism  when Muhammad himself, the Perfect Man and Model of Conduct, boasts in a hadith that “I have been made victorious through terror”? And how does Sadiq Khan know that “we [the British] are resolute…united in the face of terrorism, “and we will not allow anybody to divide us”? Haven’t the bombs and knives of murderous Muslim terrorists done quite enough already to “divide us”?

Here’s what we have in Sadiq Khan: a mayor who has presided over the greatest crime wave in London’s modern history; there are now more murders – mostly by stabbing – in London than in New York. The rate of criminality among Muslims in Great Britain far exceeds that of native British or that of other, non-Muslim immigrants. Don’t bother Mayor Khan with talk of Muslim terrorists and grooming gangs and stabbings on London streets. Sadiq Khan doesn’t need to present evidence; he’s the mayor of the greatest city in the world and he knows that “one of our strengths is our diversity.” But with each new atrocity committed by Muslims who have been prompted by the Qur’an, ever fewer British – despite the pollyannish views about “diversity” that they are constantly fed by the media and many politicians aside from Mayor Khan — are prepared to believe him. That growing disbelief is a welcome sign of mental health.

Two British women are in hospital after the New Zealand volcano disaster, the UK's top envoy to the country has revealed.

The two women were among 47 people on White Island, a volcanic island also known as Whakaari, when it erupted with a large plume of ash and steam at 2.11pm on Monday.

Of the 47 people, 34 were rescued from the island and 31 of them remain in hospital, some of them critically wounded. Five are dead, leaving eight unaccounted for.

UK high commissioner Laura Clarke did not give details of the two British women's injuries, but many people have suffered severe burns.

Tourists from Australia, the US, China and Malaysia are also missing or wounded along with New Zealanders, prime minister Jacinda Ardern revealed.

Footage taken from helicopters showed 'no signs of life', according to New Zealand police, who said they do not expect to find any more survivors.

The disaster immediately raised questions about why tourists were allowed to visit the island, after the volcanic alert level had been raised just weeks earlier.

Ms Ardern said it was a 'very unpredictable volcano' and said questions about tourism would be 'answered by the appropriate authorities', but said 'for now we're focused on those who are caught up in this horrific event'.

An aide to Matt Hancock was alleged punched by a Labour activist as the Health Secretary visited a hospital at the centre of a storm about a sick child who was forced to lie on the floor while he waited for treatment.
Mr Hancock was sent to Leeds General Infirmary in a bid to defuse a row after a photograph of the four-year-old boy was widely publicised.
But Mr Hancock was apparently met at the hospital by Labour activists and his arrival descended into an ugly scene with reports that one of his advisers was assaulted.

It comes after Boris Johnson bizarrely took a reporter's phone and put it in his pocket after he was confronted over the picture.
The PM took evasive action despite apologising to the family of Jack Williment-Barr, who was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance last week with suspected pneumonia.
As there were no beds and the department was experiencing its busiest week since 2016, he was left lying on a pile of coats in a clinical treatment room, attached to an oxygen mask. The child was later diagnosed with flu and tonsillitis.
Speaking on the election trail in the north of England today, the Prime Minister said sorry and pointed to the huge investment being pledged by the Tories.
But when ITV reporter Jo Pike tried to show him the picture of the boy on his phone, Mr Johnson declined to look at it. He eventually took the device and put it in his pocket,
When Pike described what the premier had done, Mr Johnson retrieved the mobile and did inspect the picture.
'It's a terrible, terrible photo. And I apologise obviously to the families and all those who have terrible experiences in the NHS,' he said.
'But what we are doing is supporting the NHS, and on the whole I think patients in the NHS have a much, much better experience than this poor kid has had.
'That's why we're making huge investments into the NHS, and we can only do it if we get Parliament going, if we unblock the current deadlock, and we move forward.'
At the end of the interview, Mr Johnson said: 'I'm sorry to have taken your phone. There you go.'
The odd exchange was seized on by Jeremy Corbyn, who insisted it showed that Mr Johnson did not care about patients.

Mr Johnson was also grilled on the interview as he answered questions from journalists at the event in Sunderland.

He replied: 'We are not only investing in children's services in Leeds but we're also rebuilding the whole Leeds Infirmary from top to bottom.

'And we can do that because we're now putting the biggest ever investment into the NHS.

'What I don't want to see is a fantastic programme that is going to unite and level up our country being blocked again.'

'I am very proud of what we are doing to rebuild Leeds General Infirmary. It will be a fantastic project,' he said.

In Grimsby earlier, Mr Johnson was asked if he had an apology for the family.

He said:  'Yeah, I do, and this is exactly why we need to move on.

'We're putting £34billion into the NHS now, this is the biggest investment we've seen in modern times but we need to drive it forward.'

Mr Johnson said there is 'so much more that needs to be done', adding: 'That is why we just need to unblock the politics of this country and move forward.'

Speaking to LBC the Prime Minister said he wanted to apologise to 'everyone who has a bad experience'.

The Prime Minister added: 'By and large I think the NHS do an amazing job, and I think they deserve all praise for the service they provide.

'But they do need investment and that's why we're doing it now.

Mother Sarah Williment, a primary school assistant from Leeds, described the situation as a 'crisis'.

She said: '[Jack] spent eight-and-a-half hours in A&E... Jack wasn't provided with a bed on a ward until 13-and-a-half hours later.'

Jack was eventually diagnosed with influenza A and tonsillitis.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock thanked 'tireless' hospital staff, adding: 'Leeds has been allocated £600million of funding as part of our commitment to build 40 new hospitals.'

One-fifth of patients in A&E must wait more than 12 hours for a bed, experts claim

More than 1 in 20 patients who went to A&E last week waited at least 12 hours for a bed, experts have claimed.

All patients are supposed to be seen within a target of four hours, but thousands are being 'stranded on a trolley in a corridor' as the NHS faces its worst winter crisis in history.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) analysed data from 50 A&E departments which provide around one third of the UK's acute hospital beds.

ts report shows in the first week of December, some 5,171 of the 103,099 patients who attended these hospitals were stuck in A&E for more than 12 hours.

Only 68 per cent of patients were seen within the target of four hours – the worst performance on record and 10 per cent lower than the same point last year.

In recent days there has been chaos at A&E departments, with dozens of ambulances queuing outside hospitals because hospital beds were unavailable.

The crisis was made worse by a norovirus outbreak that closed more than 1,100 beds last week.

The RCEM's Dr Katherine Henderson said: 'Many patients are now getting often life-changing news while stranded on a trolley in a corridor.

'This cannot be right, and we must strive to put an end to 'corridor care'. We are clearly in the worst state we've ever been in as we enter the true winter season.'

Monthly NHS figures showing the scale of the crisis will be released on Friday.

But the RCEM warns NHS reports do not reflect the true scale because A&E waiting times are measured from when a decision is made to admit a patient, rather than when they arrived.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: 'Our hospitals are treating a record number of people, and with increasing demand we are putting a record £33.9billion extra funding into our NHS.'

Boris Johnson warned that Jeremy Corbyn will 'take the country back decades' and fail to end the Brexit 'chaos' tonight as they crossed swords in the final election TV showdown.

In front of a primetime Friday night audience on BBC One, the PM urged the public to back his EU deal to 'unlock the potential' of the UK.

He said he had yet to hear what Mr Corbyn thought on Brexit - and the veteran left-winger was quickly forced to admit he would stay neutral in a second referendum he wants to hold.

Mr Corbyn insisted he was putting forward an 'ambitious' programme, as he desperately to turn the tide as polls continue to show the Tories ahead.

The clash - chaired by Nick Robinson - immediately promised to be a brutal affair, with Mr Johnson swiping that his opponent is 'ignorant of the realities' on trade.

Ipsos MORI research earlier found Labour has been making up some ground over the past three weeks, with its support increasing four points. But the Conservatives still have a 12-point lead, which would be enough for a comfortable majority.

Mr Corbyn launched another frantic effort to bridge the gap earlier, staging another 'reveal' of a leaked document, which he claimed showed Mr Johnson's Brexit deal would put up barriers between the mainland and Northern Ireland.

However, Mr Johnson flatly dismissed the claim, saying the UK would leave the EU 'whole and entire'.

And he went on the attack by ridiculing the Labour leader's extraordinary policy of calling a second referendum but refusing to say whether he wanted to leave the bloc.

The leaders were seen as having battled effectively to a standstill in their previous ITV showdown, although the PM managed to hammer home his key message on Brexit.

The 100-strong audience in Maidstone tonight has been selected to include equal numbers of Conservative and Labour supporters, as well as a smattering of backers of other parties and undecideds.

There will be slightly more Leave voters than Remain in the audience, reflecting the result of the 2016 referendum. Some of the audience was too young to have voted three years ago.

They will ask questions and Robinson will also pose some that have been submitted online.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnson has been facing criticism for ducking an interview with veteran BBC interrogator Andrew Neil.

In a scathing video that has received millions of views online, Neil pointed out that all the other main party leaders had agreed to be quizzed, with Jeremy Corbyn suffering a disastrous mauling over Labour anti-Semitism and his manifesto spending splurge.

Staring straight down the camera, he said: 'The Prime Minister of our nation will at times have to stand up to President Trump, President Putin, President Xi of China.

'So we're surely not expecting too much that he spend half an hour standing up to me.'

But a senior Tory source gave the strongest hint yet that Mr Johnson will snub the challenge, saying voters were fed up with programmes that were 'all about the interviewer' and involved 'endless interruptions'.

Mr Johnson himself insisted he 'couldn't accommodate everybody' - joking that he was also having to turn down a debate with 'Lord Buckethead'.

'As I say, I think most people would say, I think I'm the only Prime Minister to have done not one, but by tonight two head-to-head debates,' he said on a visit to Kent.

'I've done 118 sitdown interviews with journalists, I've fielded innumerable questions ... we cannot accommodate everybody.

'There's a guy called Lord Buckethead who wants to have a head-to-head debate with me. Unfortunately I'm not able to fit him in. You know, we can't do absolutely everything.'

As the campaign turned increasingly nasty, Channel 4 is embroiled in a bias row after wrongly captioning a video of Boris Johnson with subtitles referring to the race of immigrants.

Mr Johnson made a speech yesterday in which he said new immigration controls would ensure 'people of talent' still come to Britain.

But in the broadcaster's subtitles of the speech, the phrase was changed to become 'people of colour', with the video then being shared widely online by people insisting the wrongly-reported comments were racist.

The channel today apologised for the mistake, saying: 'Boris Johnson says 'people of talent' not 'people of colour'. Our earlier tweet was a mistake. We misheard and we apologise.'

But senior Conservatives accused the channel of trying to smear the Prime Minister. Party chairman James Cleverly tweeted: 'Boris has used the phrase 'people of talent' many times during this election campaign in relation to our points based immigration policy.'

There was a boost for the Tories today as a YouGov poll for the Times put the party up eight points in Scotland since August, at 28 per cent.

Labour is stuck on 15 per cent - but they are all way behind the SNP on 44 per cent..

The Liberal Democrats were on 12 per cent.

According to projections by polling expert Sir John Curtice, this would see the number of SNP MPs increase from 35 to 46.

Writing in the Times, he said: 'Most of the seats being defended by the Conservatives are highly marginal.

'Consequently, even if the party retains all the support it won in 2017, it could still lose a significant number of seats if, as our poll suggests, support for the SNP increases.'

The analysis suggests the Conservatives would secure eight seats in Scotland, the Liberal Democrats four and Labour one.

Poll shows the election battle is narrowing but latest show the Conservatives are still 12 point ahead of Labour

Boris Johnson was tonight declared the winner of the final election TV showdown after roasting Jeremy Corbyn over Brexit, supporting the IRA, stealth taxes and 'overthrowing capitalism'.

A snap YouGov poll found the PM performed better in the primetime BBC One clash by 52 per cent to 48 per cent - a result that will delight Tory strategists.

During a bruising hour-long session, chaired by Nick Robinson, Mr Johnson urged the public to back him on Brexit so the country can move on.

He ridiculed Labour's muddled position of renegotiating with Brussels and holding another referendum, but with Mr Corbyn staying neutral. 'You cannot negotiate a deal if you are neutral on it… it's a failure of leadership on the biggest issue facing this country at the moment,' he said.

The veteran left-winger was also pressed over Labour's plans to introduce a four-day week in the NHS, and failed to deny that he wants to 'overthrow capitalism'.

But he insisted he was putting forward an 'ambitious' programme that could end child poverty, as he desperately to turn the tide as polls continue to show the Tories ahead.

The clash quickly turned nasty, with Mr Johnson getting a round of applause as he accused Mr Corbyn of 'supporting the IRA for four decades'. He also repeatedly swiped that his opponent was 'ignorant' on the benefits of free trade.
Ipsos MORI research earlier found Labour has been making up some ground over the past three weeks, with its support increasing four points. But the Conservatives still have a 12-point lead, which would be enough for a comfortable majority.

Mr Corbyn said he wanted to 'help the many not the few' while Mr Johnson said the country needed to 'move on' and get Brexit done
As the pair traded blows on Brexit, Mr Johnson said: 'Who is going to negotiate it? Because as far as I can see everyone on the Labour frontbench … is campaigning for Remain apart from Mr Corbyn who is neutral on the matter,' Mr Johnson said. 'How can you get a new deal from Brussels if you don't really believe in it?'
Mr Johnson wants a trade deal with the US which would take 'seven years' to negotiate.

Mr Corbyn said: 'He knows he can't get a deal quickly with the USA because of the way in which the US political system works. 'And so what he will do is walk out of a relationship with the EU into a relationship with nobody.'
The PM warned that Labour governments always went out of power with a crisis - but he said Mr Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell would trigger one immediately.

Mr Corbyn said he wanted 'Socialism carried out in a democratic way in this country' to raise living standards.
But Mr Johnson shot back: 'I would say it is one-nation Conservatism, which understands the vital importance of a dynamic market economy as the only way in which you can pay for fantastic public services and for looking after the poorest and neediest in our society...
To attack capitalism as Mr Corbyn and Mr McDonnell do is absolutely senseless.'

Asked if he thought Mr Corbyn 'wanted to destroy capitalism', the PM said: 'John McDonnell, who is the shadow chancellor, and some would say the intellectual driving force this type of plio-socialism, is committed, he says, to fermenting the overthrow of capitalism. I think that is a mistake. 'I don't think that is the right way forward for our country.'

Mr Corbyn replied: 'My kind of socialism is one where you don't leave people behind, you don't ignore the fact that four million of our children are living in poverty, you don't ignore the fact that you have thousands of people sleeping on the streets of this country - the fifth richest country in the world. The inequality has got worse.'

In one exchange Mr Corbyn seemed to contradict Mr McDonnell, who has said he wants to introduce a four-day working week in the NHS as well as the rest of the economy. he wants to see the working week come down, but added: 'There is no plan to bring in a four day week in the NHS.'

Earlier, Mr Corbyn launched another frantic effort to bridge the gap, staging another 'reveal' of a leaked document, which he claimed showed Mr Johnson's Brexit deal would put up barriers between the mainland and Northern Ireland.
However, Mr Johnson flatly dismissed the claim, saying the UK would leave the EU 'whole and entire'.

Prince Charles has spoken of the “immense blessings” British Jews have brought to the country – and insisted his support for communal causes “is the least I can do to try to repay” them.

The heir to the throne also revealed how his father Prince Philip helped a Jewish boy facing antisemitic bullying in 1930s Germany, as he addressed a varied guest-list of 400 at the first Buckingham Palace celebrating the community’s contribution.

Describing the ties between Anglo-Jewry and the Crown as “special and precious”, he added: “I say this from a particular and personal perspective because I have grown up being deeply touched by the fact that British synagogues have, for centuries, remembered my family in your weekly prayers. And as you remember my family, so we too remember and celebrate you.”

Guests at the historic reception – organised over several months with the support of the Board of Deputies – included high-profile figures like the Chief Rabbi, Howard Jacobson, Robert Peston and Nigella Lawson. But he said he wanted to offer “particular gratitude” to the less known volunteers and charity workers who made up the bulk of the guest list.

The Prince said the festive season was a fitting moment to celebrate the “contribution of our Jewish community to the health, wealth and happiness of the nation. In every walk of life, in every field of endeavour, our nation could have had no more generous citizens, and no more faithful friends”. The UK, he insisted, is “enriched by the diversity of its constituent parts. Its whole is so much greater than its parts”.

Addressing the gathering – which included rabbis from all denominations but no candidates amid sensitivity in the lead up to next week’s election – His Royal Highness said he was “immensely proud” of his grandmother Prince Alice who is recognised as Righteous Among the National for hiding a Jewish family during the War.

And he went on to tell a lesser-known another story of courage in his own family that too place in 1933 when Prince Philip was spending a year in school in Germany. “He helped an older schoolboy who had been identified as a Jew and badly mistreated by other boys,” Charles recalled. ״His act of compassion is a source of great pride and inspiration to me.”

Recalling how Britain welcomed Jews fleeing pogroms or the Nazis on the Kindertransport, he said: “In turn, many thousands of Jewish people played a vital role in the war effort. My own great uncle, Lord Mountbatten, was enormously proud of the airman, RAF Flight Sergeant Jack Nissenthall, whose missions behind enemy lines would have been a certain death sentence had he ever been captured. This is a legacy in which all share.”

He spoke of his own work in supporting Jewish causes including attending Kindertransport reunions organised by the Association of Jewish Refugees, as well as being patron of World Jewish Relief and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

“I see this as the least I can do to try to repay, in some small way, the immense blessings the Jewish people have brought to this land and, indeed, to humanity,” he said. “In the Hebrew Scriptures, which provide so much of the ethical underpinning of our society, we read in The Book of Deuteronomy, the inspiring exhortation: ‘Choose life!’

The Jewish community of the United Kingdom have fulfilled that divine command in countless ways, and our society has been immeasurably enriched as a result.”

Guests were serenaded on arrival at the Palace by the sounds of a JLGB band. In an extra historic twist, a group of around 20 guests took part in an impromptu evening prayer service by the throne – led by Jewish Leadership Council CEO Simon Johnson.

Boris Johnson urges voters to 'get Britain out of neutral' - as poll finds election battle has narrowed
Boris Johnson appealed for voters to 'get Britain out of neutral' today as a dramatic poll showed the election battle has narrowed with just six days to go.

Ipsos MORI research found Labour has been making up some ground on the Tories over the past fortnight - with support increasing four points.

But the Conservatives still have a significant advantage on 44 per cent to 32 per cent for Jeremy Corbyn's party.

A senior Tory source said: 'This shows why it has been impossible to co-operate with Channel 4 News, they are campaigners in this election - inventing the most damaging things possible to further their campaign against Brexit.

'This sort of thing is why so many media organisations have collapsing audiences. We sadly do not expect the senior management at Channel 4 to take this terrible mistake seriously and we expect more of the same.'

Mr Johnson's actual words at an election campaign event in Derbyshire were: 'We'll be able to do all sorts of things differently and better including controlling our immigration system for the first time in decades and that would be a good thing.

'I'm in favour of having people of talent come to this country but I think we should have it democratically controlled.'

The wrongly reported comments were seized upon by his opponents, who claimed what he said was racist.

It comes after another row over Channel 4's decision to replace Mr Johnson with an ice sculpture on its TV climate change debate earlier in the campaign after the Prime Minister declined to take part.

Former environment secretary Michael Gove offered to appear on the programme instead of Mr Johnson, and even turned up at the studio, but Channel 4 refused, saying it was only for leaders.

The Tories have complained to media regulator Ofcom about the 'partisan stunt' by the channel.

Conservative sources later threatened that Channel 4's public service broadcasting obligations would be reviewed if they win the election.

In lots of ways this is a complicated election.

Derbyshire is not the same as Dundee, Birmingham is not the same as Bangor.

Westminster sure isn't the same as Widnes - and London, maybe above all else, isn't the same as Linlithgow, Leeds or Ludlow.

There are a multitude of contenders as well - not just the traditional parties, but the SNP and Plaid Cymru, the Brexit Party, what remains of the Independent Group for Change, moveable tribes of party defectors and a clutch of independents as well.

But as we enter the last seven days of this election, in our first-past-the-post system, whether you believe it is the best or the worst of all worlds, the choice irrevocably, and inevitably perhaps, moves towards the two big teams - the reds and the blues, and the two big, flawed, characters of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn.

At the start of this campaign we talked here about how, in a strange way, they are an odd couple who share some traits.

And on the trail that has been shown, again and again, to be the case.

Kid gloves
Boris Johnson fascinates some people, who are desperate to shake his hand, eager as children when there are free sweets on offer.

But for others he is simply not someone they can trust, who they may even back, but will fill in their ballots wearing kid gloves.

As one voter in Cardiff told me last week, she had backed Labour all her life, but then had voted Leave, so will now back Boris Johnson, having flirted with the idea of voting for the Brexit Party.

She had this parting shot: "I hope he's not lying."

None of our campaign journeys have provided scientific evidence of the Conservatives cruising to an enthusiastic majority.

Seeing Jeremy Corbyn on the trail, there is no doubting how much the party members who turn up to Labour's organised election events believe in him.

Core messages
They talk of "the movement", of big change coming. He is greeted by smaller crowds, perhaps, than in 2017, but by big Labour audiences nonetheless, delighted to see him and sing along to the now-familiar, "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" chorus.

But Labour candidates talk privately, again and again, of how his perceived unpopularity among many traditional voters is the block to a Labour majority.

But the enthusiasm for Boris Johnson, where it exists, is more jaded than during the referendum of 2016.

Likewise, the delight at Jeremy Corbyn is dimmed compared with the crowds that we saw greet him in 2017.

One man today told me, with tears gathering in the corner of his eyes, that he was so cross about this election because he believed that it had to happen because politicians have made such a mess of the last few years, and obviously upset that the choices were limited in his view, to a decision between two men, neither of whom he trusts.

As we enter the final week of this campaign though, we will see from the two main protagonists a repetition of their core messages, rather than a grand invitation to inspire.

Public spending squeeze
For the Tories that will be - yes, you guessed it - to resolve Brexit, to remove the biggest question mark that's been hanging over British politics for three years now.

Not, of course, what the world will look like after the trade deal that could be done with Brussels (or not) - but whether we actually leave or not.

And for Labour, it will be punching at the bruises that nearly a decade of a squeeze on public spending has created.

There are of course many other issues that might and will raise their heads in the time that's left.

It's of course extremely hard to read how the national polls and sentiment on the ground will translate into the final numbers.

But - unless something very strange happens in the next seven days - those pretty stable party positions are likely to result in the Conservatives being the biggest party, but not necessarily clearing the hurdle that will see them returning to government with a majority.

And unlike the deeply dramatic election and referendum campaigns we have seen in the past few years, perhaps - just whisper it - in the run-up to this particular polling day, nothing has changed.

The first victim died in Clarence Mews, Hackney, on Thursday afternoon
Three men have been stabbed to death in London in little over 12 hours.

A man in his 20s was attacked in Hackney, east London, on Thursday afternoon. A 14-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man have been arrested.

Overnight, a man was found fatally wounded in Knightsbridge, central London, while another victim was killed in Deptford, south-east London.

The deaths mean 136 murder investigations have been launched in the capital this year.

It is the same amount as during the whole of 2018.

The victim who was killed in Knightsbridge was found unconscious just after midnight after police had been called over reports of a stabbing.

He was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene at 00:39 GMT.

Another man was found injured and taken to hospital "in a serious condition", police said.

Emergency services were also called to Bronze Street, Deptford, at 03:00 GMT after a man was fatally stabbed.

No arrests have been made over either of the killings overnight and the Met have appealed for witnesses.

Detectives believe the victim killed in Clarence Mews, Hackney, on Thursday died following "an altercation involving a group of people".

The two people arrested on suspicion of murder remain in custody but the Met said "at least two other suspects remain outstanding" and inquiries to locate them are "ongoing"
