Over the years, HonestReporting has analyzed and critiqued hundreds of articles, editorials and opinion pieces. But what goes through the minds of the journalists and writers that influence them to treat Israel in a certain way?

Here we present our Media Psychology 101 series – taking an academic examination into the minds of the media and how news consumers are influenced by the media’s reporting.
This is the first part of a guest post by Cherryl Smith, PhD, a Professor of English in Rhetoric and Composition at California State University, Sacramento. She is currently writing a book on media framing of Israel.

Although professional organizations of journalists have impressive codes of ethics and sometimes respond with apologies and revisions when some of the more egregious inaccuracies are reported, academics and journalists note that bias is not merely an occasional problem, it is a given of mainstream press. Media coverage ofIsrael may simply be an extreme case.

Israel - God's Timepiece
No Support For Israel In The White House?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last year has seen the White House become empty of people who have a deep personal knowledge of the Israeli situation and who care about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. At first it was the much publicized resignation of former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel who was involved in every significant detail of the White House's Israel agenda.

Then David Axelrod, top political advisor to President Barack Obama left for greener pastures and last summer, Dan Shapiro chose to become US ambassador to Israel over taking the position of White House Middle East desk chief.

If that is not enough, next month Dennis Ross, Obama's senior advisor on the Middle East, will be leaving office. Ross' White House exit has barely raised a murmur in Israel even though it is one of the biggest losses to the US government as far as relations with Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are concerned. It leaves Israel without a reliable contact within the White house.

Rahm Emanuel was replaced by Bill Daley who doesn't deal with the Israel issue. Axelrod, whose focus was the political significance of relations with Israel, was replaced with David Plouffe who is busy with managing Obama's election campaign and has no connection to the Israel-Palestinian matter.

Steve Simon now heads the US National Security Council's Middle East desk and was immediately drawn into the Arab Spring uprisings. Shapiro was Obama's top adviser on Israel and the Middle East during the 2008 presidential race and came with him to the White House. He had access to Obama's inner circle, access that Simon will have to work hard for.

Ross, 62-years-old, decided that after three years of working in the White House, it would be pointless to waste his time working around the clock when it is clear that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas aren't making any progress while President Obama who is disappointed by both leaders, lacks the commitment the process needs due to the fact that it is an election year.

Ross' resignation is sad news for the Israeli and Palestinian public who seek a peaceful solution in the region. The resignation is also disappointing for the Israeli government who had an approachable and understanding source who could find swift solutions when problems and misunderstandings arose.

Ross' resignation also comes at a bad time for Obama, who needs Ross during the election year as a credible advocate among Jewish Americans. It would seem that Ross does not see this as a sufficient reason to continue in his thankless job 24/7.

Many of the best and brightest have collapsed under the pressure after 18 months in the White House. Dennis Ross managed to survive for nearly three years.

Ross often found himself in the minority opinion, he believed in small steps and not in connecting any US strike against Iran with Israeli concessions on the settlements. He was opposed to exerting public pressure on Israel to halt settlement construction, a move special Middle East envoy George Mitchell favored.

Ross believed in the policy of exhibiting soft diplomacy in public, making progress behind the scenes, while at the same time understanding the political difficulties that Netanyahu's right-wing government is under.

Mitchell promoted a stance that demanded that Israel halt settlement construction in exchange for normalization of relations the Arab world, including opening the Arab skies to and air space to Israeli commercial flights. Mitchell's stance failed. And the more Mitchell faded away, the more Ross took center stage. Yet after a few months it was clear to him that at this point, there was no one to talk to.

Ross' stance put him in a problematic position with the Palestinians. Abbas no longer wanted to meet with him and Jordan's King Abdullah hinted at a "problem" with him in an interview given in the US. This might have also contributed to Ross' decision to resign.

A source within Washington said that Dennis Ross understands Israel in high definition and is irreplaceable. The source added that while Ross doesn't always see eye to eye with Israel, there has always been mutual respect and there are very few people who have his experience, knowledge and the expertise at a time when the Iran issue is becoming a major issue during an election year.

The source noted that Ross can play the game of Middle East chess in a way that only a very few would be capable of and that Ross' decision to reason was due to exhaustion.

Aaron Miller, a Middle East specialist currently a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, was Ross' deputy as Middle East envoy during the Clinton administration. According to Miller, at this stage there is nothing left for Ross to do within the government.

Miller stated that there is no credible peace process, no expectations from Netanyahu or Abbas to exhibit leadership and no Arab leader willing to step up to the plate. The fall of Assad's regime in Syria will further complicate matters at this stage.

Miller added that if someone were to tell him that there was a breakthrough in negotiations, that the US was involved in a serious process between two leaders and a US president investing his time and efforts in the process, then he would think Ross had something to do as he offered perspective, sensitivity and experience that no one else has.

Now that Ross is out of the picture, Miller finds himself on a very short list of State Department alums who are Middle East experts that might be under consideration by the White House.

The two frontrunners are Dan Kurtzer who endorsed Obama's candidacy during the 2008 democratic primaries and Martin Indyk, a close associate of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The question is – who will be willing come in on an election year where the results are far from clear.

Iranian Nuke Attack on US Easy as EMP?

http://www.cbn.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pentagon estimates show that Iran could have missiles capable of reaching the East Coast of the United States by the year 2015.

If the Iranians acquire a nuclear bomb, they might be able to cripple their "Great Satan" even sooner through an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, attack off America's coastline.

"Within a year of an EMP event, at least two-thirds of the American population would perish from starvation, disease, and societal collapse. It's a high-tech means of killing people the old fashioned way," Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, president of EMPact America, explained.

A nuclear weapon detonated above the U.S. would emit powerful electromagnetic pulses, frying America's electrical grid and shutting down necessities from cars to computers to airplanes and refrigerators.

Iranian military handbooks point out the benefits of such an attack. Russia, China, and North Korea also possess EMP technology.

Pry, a member of the congressional EMP Commission, said America could plunge back into the 19th century, with Katrina-like chaos nationwide.

"A single nuclear weapon will cause the collapse of the electric power grid, all the critical infrastructures and other electronic systems across the entire continental United States and basically cause a permanent blackout," he told CBN News.

Pry's nightmare scenario shows Iran or its terrorist proxy, Hezbollah, parking an unmarked freighter off America's East Coast or in the Gulf of Mexico.

They would fire a nuclear-tipped scud above a city like New York, then immediately sink the freighter to destroy evidence of their handiwork.

"Even if we were able to identify the scud by our radars, we wouldn't be able to identify who did it," he explained. "This is a way of keeping your fingerprints off it."

Former CIA double agent Reza Kahlili spent time as a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps. He said the Iranians have conducted missiles tests off ships in the Caspian Sea, which are consistent with an EMP-style attack.

"They're going to get to the Gulf of Mexico with ballistic missiles, and they're going to launch one at a moment's notice. And they wouldn't care about the repercussions," he told CBN News.

Kahlili's book, A Time to Betray, details Iran's rapidly advancing ballistic missile program.

"They have obtained missiles from North Korea that can now target the capitals of Europe," Kahlili said.

There are reports that Iran plans to establish missiles bases in Venezuela, where it has a vast network. And an Iranian official recently threatened to send military ships to patrol America's Atlantic coast.

Legislation is currently pending in Congress that would harden America's electrical grid against an EMP attack.

Sponsors of the bill, called the SHIELD Act, say it would cost less than $1 billion to do it. But the bill has yet to pass.

Infrastructure Vulnerability - Russian Hackers Seize Control of U.S. Public Water System

http://www.dailymail.co.uk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Russian cyber criminals have destroyed a pump used to supply water to thousands of homes in Illinois, according to an infrastructure control systems expert.

Hackers accessed the public water facility in the city of Springfield and are believed to have then broken the pump by remotely turning it on and off in quick succession.

The incident, which took place on November 8, sets a worrying precedent for security officials - particularly after another hacker has since claimed to have taken control of a second U.S. facility.

Hackers using a computer in Russia have accessed an Illinois public water facility and are believed to have then broken the pump by remotely turning it on and off quickly

Joe Weiss, who advises utilities on how to protect themselves against hackers, told the AFP news agency: 'This is arguably the first case where we have had a hack of critical infrastructure from outside the United States that caused damage.

'That is what is so big about this. They could have done anything because they had access to the master station.'

The attack, which is being investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Department For Homeland Security (DHS), has been traced to a computer in Russia, Mr Weiss said.

It first came to light after Mr Weiss, of Applied Control Solutions, posted on his blog quotations taken from a one-page report by the Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center.

The report said hackers obtained access using stolen login names and passwords.

SCADA software is in place at nuclear power stations and oil rigs; the Illinois infiltration therefore sets a frightening precedent.

Mr Weiss said: 'We don't know how many other SCADA systems have been compromised because they don't really have cyber forensics.'

He claimed the report said 'glitches' in the remote access system for the pump had been notices for months before the pump was destroyed.

'No one realised the hackers were in there until they started turning on and off the pump,' he said.

Peter Boogaard, a spokeman for the DHS, said: 'At this time there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety.'

However, a hacker using the online name 'pr0f' has responded to Mr Boogaard's statement by claiming to have taken control of a second U.S. public facility, this time in South Houston, Texas.

Astonishingly, he said that SCADA system was only protected by a three-character password.

To prove his point, he then posted links - on the Pastebin website - to what he claims are screenshots of the internal control systems for the waste water treatment plant.

The issue of securing SCADA systems from cyber attacks made international headlines last year after the mysterious Stuxnet virus attacked a centrifuge at a uranium enrichment facility in Iran.

Many experts said that was a major setback for Iran's nuclear weapons program and attribute the attack to the U.S. and Israel.

In 2007, researchers at the U.S. government's Idaho National Laboratories identified a vulnerability in the electric grid, demonstrating how much damage a cyber attack could inflict on a large diesel generator.

Lani Kass, who retired in September as senior policy adviser to the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said America should take the possibility of a cyber attack seriously.

She said: 'The going in hypothesis is always that it's just an incident or coincidence. And if every incident is seen in isolation, it's hard - if not impossible - to discern a pattern or connect the dots.

'Failure to connect the dots led us to be surprised on 9/11.'

Representative Jim Lanvevin, a Democrat from Rhode Island, said that the report of the attack highlighted the need to pass legislation to improve cyber security of the U.S. critical infrastructure.

He said: 'The stakes are too high for us to fail, and our citizens will be the ones to suffer the consequences of our inaction.'

Will Israel Face Iran Alone?

http://frontpagemag.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adrian Blomfield, Jerusalem correspondent for Britain’s Telegraph, reports that “Israel has refused to reassure President Barack Obama that it would warn him in advance of any pre-emptive strike on Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” and that Obama “was rebuffed last month when he demanded” such a guarantee.

Blomfield says he has this dope from “insiders briefed on a top-secret meeting between America’s most senior defence chief and Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s hawkish prime minister….” He’s referring to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s visit to Israel last month, during which, in a “private meeting with Mr Netanyahu and the defence minister, Ehud Barak,” Panetta conveyed Obama’s “urgent” demand. Yet

the two Israelis were notably evasive in their response, according to sources both in Israel and the United States….

Alarmed by Mr Netanyahu’s noncommittal response, Mr Obama reportedly ordered the US intelligence services to step up monitoring of Israel to glean clues of its intentions.

The report meshes with Panetta’s not-so-veiled warning to Israel just before that visit to lay off Iran, and with his statement this week—albeit not explicitly directed at Israel—that an attack on Iran could have “unintended consequences…. It could have a serious impact in the region and it could have a serious impact on US forces in the region.”

The same message came through from Europe this week. French foreign minister Alain Juppe said an attack on Iranian’s nuclear facilities would “drag the world into an ‘uncontrollable spiral.’” In the wake of last week’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on Iran’s nuclear progress—confirming all of Israel’s warnings over the years—EU foreign ministers “ruled out any military action for now.”

Juppe did say the EU would be “asking the European Investment Bank to freeze loans to Iran.” Meanwhile the EU foreign ministers “decided to wait till their next meeting on Dec 1., before taking further action.”

It somehow doesn’t have that ring of urgency.

And yet, as The Telegraph’s Blomfield also notes, “many in [Israel] believe time is running out.”

Blomfield quotes Ephraim Asculai, former IAEA official and an Israeli expert on Iran’s nuclear program, saying that “if the Iranian regime decides to do so, it can produce a nuclear explosive device within a year, plus or minus a few months.” There are also warnings that Iran could soon be transferring most of its nuclear production under a mountain near Qom, making it much harder—or impossible—to bomb from the air.

Is Israel, then, facing the threat essentially alone? If so, it would hardly be unprecedented. There’s an inglorious history of the United States and Europe leaving Israel to fend for itself against threats, sometimes even existential ones.

It happened in Israel’s 1948-1949 War for Independence, when it found itself embargoed by the West (with Britain aiding the Arab side) and had to turn to the Soviet bloc for arms. Just before the 1967 Six Day War, Israel’s “ally” France slapped an arms embargo on the region that was mainly aimed at Israel.

Six years later, in the Yom Kippur War, it took an Israeli threat to use nuclear weapons against its attackers Egypt and Syria for the U.S. to finally airlift desperately needed military supplies. Even then, America’s European allies refused the U.S. planes landing rights to refuel, with only Portugal finally acquiescing.

The record in recent years is not much better. Israel’s Operation Defensive Shield (2002) against the Palestinian terror war, Second Lebanon War (2006) against Hezbollah, and Operation Cast Lead (2008-2009) against Hamas in Gaza all evoked a clamor of Western demands for immediate ceasefires along with charges of Israeli moral offenses.

The U.S. was sometimes more sympathetic than Europe but still distinctly uncomfortable with Israeli military action and showed short patience for it no matter what savageries Israel had been subjected to.

It may be too soon to conclude that the current situation is as stark. As Joseph Klein notes, Obama could “surprise us and show the boldness he displayed in making the decision to take out Osama bin Laden,” though “his record to date on Iran is dismal.” And while some of the Republican presidential candidates have made hawkish avowals on Iran, Israel—even if one of them eventually defeats Obama—has to watch the clock.

If the reports (notably in The Guardian and Time) that Israel’s Mossad was behind the blast at the Iranian missile base are accurate, it could be an indication that Israel is already taking its own tack. As Israeli author and military commentator Ronen Bergman told the Telegraph reporter:

People outside Israel don’t understand how profound memories of the Holocaust are, and how they affect future policy making. At the end of the day, this policy of “never again” would dictate Israel’s behaviour when intelligence comes through that Iran has come close to a bomb.

Israel To Employ High-tech Weapons in Iran Strike

http://www.ynetnews.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current and former US intelligence officials estimate that any Israeli attack on nuclear sites in Iran would go far beyond airstrikes from F-15 and F-16 fighter jets and likely include electronic warfare against the Islamic Republic's electric grid, Internet, cell phone network, and emergency frequencies for firemen and police officers.

The officials, who based their assessment on a US intelligence report published last summer, told the Daily Beast news website that Israel has been assembling a multibillion-dollar array of high-tech weapons that would allow it to jam, blind, and deafen Tehran's defenses in the case of a pre-emptive aerial strike.

According to the officials, one of the weapons Israel has developed is capable of mimicking a maintenance cell phone signal that commands a cell network to “sleep,” effectively stopping transmissions. The Israelis also have jammers capable of creating interference within Iran’s emergency frequencies for first responders, they told the Daily Beast.

The sources also said that in case of an attack on Iran, Israel would likely exploit a vulnerability that American officials detected two years ago in Iran's big-city electric grids, which are not “air-gapped”—meaning they are connected to the Internet and therefore vulnerable to a Stuxnet-style cyberattack.

One source told the Daily Beast that Israel has the capability to bring a denial-of-service attack to nodes of Iran’s command and control system that rely on the Internet.

According to the report, the likely delivery method for the electronic elements of this attack would be a drone the size of a jumbo jet.

The Daily Beast said Israel had already employed some of the technology at its disposal during its alleged aerial attack on a Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007.

"Syrian military got a taste of this warfare when Israeli planes 'spoofed' the country’s air-defense radars, at first making it appear that no jets were in the sky and then in an instant making the radar believe the sky was filled with hundreds of planes," the report said.

A recent report published by the International Atomic Energy Agency suggested Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons. On Wednesday Defense Minister Ehud Barak caused a storm when told American broadcaster Charlie Rose he'd also seek nuclear weapons if he were Iranian.

Meanwhile, an Iranian website reported Thursday that "at least 36" members of the Revolutionary Guard were killed during last week's massive explosion at a military base outside Tehran. Initial reports said 17 people were killed in the blast.

Abbas Going for Broke, Gunning for Unity with Hamas

http://www.israelnationalnews.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is to meet with Hamas leaders in Cairo Thursday to sum up a unity deal based on “resistance,” a Palestinian Authority state based on the temporary 1949 Armistice Lines and non-recognition of Israel.

Abbas, head of the rival Fatah faction, formally signed a formal unity agreement with Hamas in May, but it quickly became nothing more than a ceremonial act following disagreements.

The failure of the Palestinian Authority to gain admittance as a full member in the United Nations has been a game-changer. Following the American and Israel decision to cut off funds to the PA after it won membership on the U.N.’s UNESCO agency, Abbas has made it clear he considers the Obama administration an obstacle to his plans for Palestinian Authority statehood.

Spokesmen for Hamas and Abbas have confirmed this week’s meeting will be full of substance as Abbas had apparently decided to bank on Asian and pro-Arab countries in Europe to give him the diplomatic backing he has lost with the United States.

Hamas opposed Abbas' bid for U.N. membership, and the failure has represented the terrorist organization with a golden opportunity to exercise weight. The failure of a unified Palestinian Authority has hampered Abbas’ influence in the West, with Hamas ruling Gaza and the Fatah faction ruling Arab areas of Judea and Samaria.

Hamas spokesmen said the unity agreement will be based on a policy of ”resistance,” an Arab code word for terror; a Palestinian Authority country being defined by the temporary 1949 Armistice Lines that were in effect until the Six-Day War in 1967; and non-recognition of Israel.

Abbas previously has said he recognizes Israel as an entity, but not a Jewish state. Presumably, Abbas will claim he recognizes Israel only according the temporary borders. Their inclusion in the Palestinian Authority would mean the expulsion of nearly 10 percent of Israel's population and the forfeiting of lands and property in PA-claimed areas.

One of the bones of contention between Fatah and Hamas has been the choice of prime minister, a post held by Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza and PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in Ramallah. Under the new agreement, neither of them would serve in office.

The planned meeting this week between Abbas and Khaled Mashaal, the supreme leader of Hamas, is bound to upset the Obama administration even more than the bid for membership in the United Nations, a move that effectively buried the American-led ”diplomatic process.”

A further provocation could be the participation of the Islamic Jihad in new PA elections in May, a move the terrorist organization said it is considering.

Abbas still is trying to stay on good terms with the Obama administration, commenting that the United States “is considered our friend” because it “helps us financially and it provides us with a considerable amount of aid.” The cut-off to aid following the PA’s acceptance to UNESCO proved temporary but still remains a threat.

Hizbullah Preparing Missile War on Israel as Iran Braces For Attack

http://global.christianpost.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs asserted that Hizbullah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah, in coordination with Teheran, has been meeting senior commanders to plan for war with the Jewish state. The center, in a report by Shimon Shapira, said Nasrallah has ordered his commanders to prepare for long-range missile attacks that would target Tel Aviv and other major Israeli cities.

“Nasrallah’s recent escalation of public statements stems from heightened fear in Hizbullah that an Israeli and/or American attack on Iran is drawing nearer,” the report said. “As a strategic arm of Iran, Hizbullah sees itself as Iran’s first line of defense against Israel.”

“Hizbullah forces are being trained to fire at least 10,000 missiles, right at the war’s outset, at military and strategic targets such as airfields, military camps, and vital facilities including maritime ones, followed by the firing of rockets from launch sites whose location will come as a surprise to Israel,” the report, titled “Hizbullah Discusses Its Operational Plan for War with Israel,” said.

The report, released on Nov. 2 and based on open Arab sources, said Nasrallah has also ordered a ground force invasion of northern Israel. Hizbullah, with at least 20,000 fighters, was said to be planning to deploy 5,000 special forces troops trained in Iran to capture Israel’s Galilee region.

Shapira, a retired brigadier general from Israeli military intelligence, said the Hizbullah plan was formulated with Iran. He said the Iranian Army has already mined Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley where Israeli special forces were expected to land in any regional war.

The report said Hizbullah has also been equipped with so-called “smart” anti-tank guided missiles from Iran. These missiles were said to have been designed to knock out Israel’s fleet of Merkava-class main battle tanks, which played a marginal role in the last war with Hizbullah in 2006.

“Hizbullah’s conclusion from the lessons of the Second Lebanon War [in 2006] is that, next time, Israel will have no red lines in waging all-out war against Lebanon and Hizbullah,” the report said. “Hence, Hizbullah is planning ‘many surprises’ that will change the force equation with Israel both at the start of the conflict and during its operational phase.”

In February, Nasrallah announced Hizbullah plans to conquer northern Israel. Since then, Hizbullah has been training for such a mission, including deploying rocket and artillery in the Bekaa Valley as well as mining possible landing sites by Israeli helicopters in southern Lebanon.

The preparations were said to have been overseen by Hizbullah operational chief Mustafa Badr Eddin, who replaced Imad Mughniyeh, assassinated in 2008. Badr Eddin was also said to have arranged for a recently-completed special commando course by 727 fighters in Iran.

Hizbullah’s engineering units were also said to have reinforced positions in Maydon in the western Bekaa. The report said Hizbullah has formed five brigades, with each consisting of 1,000 troops, to invade Israel.

Brigade 1 has been assigned the capture of the northern Israeli city of Nahariya, located about five kilometers from the Lebanese border. The report said Hizbullah was believed to be preparing 150 special forces troops transported by speedboats to attack Nahariya from the Mediterranean Sea.

“This force’s mission is to take as many hostages as possible so as to prevent Israel from bombing the Hizbullah forces in this sector,” the report said.

Brigade 2 was said to have been assigned to capture the Israeli border town of Shlomi and cut military supply lines. Brigade 3 was ordered to conquer Carmiel and cut off the road to Safed, the headquarters of Israel’s military Northern Command.

“Brigade 4 will take over the communities of Malkiya, Ramot Naftali and Yiftach in order to prevent the IDF from firing from these areas into southern Lebanon,” the report said. “Brigade 5 will serve as a strategic reserve force for special missions.”

The report said Hizbullah was believed to have also discussed its war strategy with Syria. On Oct. 27, the Lebanese daily Al Akhbar published a detailed account of a visit by Nasrallah to President Bashar Assad in Damascus. The following day, Al Akhbar, regarded as close to Hizbullah, said the Assad-Nasrallah meeting never took place.

“It could be that, on second thought, Hizbullah decided the timing of the article was unwise,” the report said. “As Assad kills his people, Hizbullah faces bitter criticism for supporting him and is losing its standing in the Arab street.”

Israel, Iran on Collision Course with History

http://www.cbn.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The number one question right now in the Mideast is -- will Israel attack Iran's nuclear facilities? Whatever Israel's decision, it will change the course of history.

The F-151 fighter jet is just one of the Israeli weapons that could be used to launch an attack on the Islamic Republic.

"There's also reports that Israel's ballistic missile capabilities of Israel's Dolphin class submarines, which currently has three Dolphin class submarines. There are two more on order and under construction in Germany," Yaakov Katz, who covers the military for The Jerusalem Post, told CBN News.

"According to reports, these submarines have the ability to fire cruise missiles," he added.

"Israel would definitely take into consideration all of its long-range capabilities to take out Iran's facilities, if it decides to take military action," Katz said.

High-Tech Weapons

A recent report also revealed "for much of the last decade…Israel has been assembling a multibillion dollar array of high-tech weapons…to jam, blind and deafen Tehran's defenses in the case of a pre-emptive aerial strike," Eli Lake, senior national security correspondent for Newsweek and the Daily Beast, wrote.

If Israel moves against Iran, there would be at least five main nuclear installations in its sights.

The first is the nuclear plant at Bushehr, followed by the uranium enrichment plant at Natanz. Those targets are followed by the Isfahan conversion facility, the heavy-water plant at Arak, and the recently discovered Fordo plan near Qom.

Flight into Enemy Territory

Then there's the question over the flight path Israeli planes would take to their targets. Some believe they could fly over Saudi Arabia, an enemy state.

Israel's Channel 10 reported new intelligence briefings indicate Saudi Arabia and several other Arab countries are lobbying the Obama administration to strike Iran this year.

The reports say the Saudis fear Iran might target them even before Israel.

Israel prefers the U.S. would lead or assist with a military strike. But U.S. Defense Minister Leon Panetta visited Israeli leaders recently and warned them not to go it alone.

Reportedly, Israel refused to promise they'd warn the U.S. about any strike. But could they go it alone?

"My assessment -- and what I hear from the Israeli Defense Forces -- is that there is a level of confidence that they have the ability to go it alone against Iran and to neutralize some of the key facilities that Iran has built up over the years," Katz said.

"Maybe not obliterate the program, but definitely cause enough damage to set back the program one, two years, possibly even three," he added.

There is a clear pattern of Israel defending itself against potential nuclear attacks. In 1981, it destroyed an Iraqi nuclear reactor. In 2007, it was a Syrian nuclear facility.

Will Israel strike a third time? If so, time's running out.

"The move of the facilities from Natanz, centrifuges from Natanz to Qom should be very alarming for Israel and for the world because that would mean a further fortification of their uranium enrichment capabilities, something that's potentially immune to conventional military strike," Katz said.

"Maybe there's another way to attack it, but it would make it all the more difficult," he added. "That means time is closing. The window of opportunity is closing."

Whatever Israel's decision, it will change the Middle East, the world and change the course of history.

Pinkwashing Israel in the NY Times
A New York Times op-ed accuses Israel of promoting its gay rights record in order to cover up its abuses against the Palestinians.
A New York Times op-ed weighs in on Israel and “pinkwashing.” That’s the simplistic idea blocking the gay community from crediting Israel’s liberal record on gay rights — as it means taking away the moral high ground from the Arabs and deliberately covering up or distracting from Israeli “crimes” against the Palestinians.

Professor Sarah Schulman writes:
Increasing gay rights have caused some people of good will to mistakenly judge how advanced a country is by how it responds to homosexuality.

HONEST REPORTING
The Guardian Acknowledges Anti-Semitism...Or Does It?

The Guardian's readers' editor states that its reporters, writers and editors must be more vigilant about the language they use when writing about Jews or Israel.

But is The Guardian more concerned about its reputation than dealing with the real issue?

Excuses, excuses. We hear them all the time. From the Palestinian Authority condemning an act of terror against Jews, not because deliberately murdering civilians is simply immoral and wrong, but because it “doesn’t serve the Palestinian cause” at that particular moment in time.

We heard excuses from Deborah Orr, who was sorry that she upset people for her “badly chosen and poorly used” words that suggested Zionists see themselves as “chosen” but not sorry for the thrust of her outrageous article.

It All Started When Israel Fired Back… Again!

Haven’t we been here before? Palestinian terrorists launch or attempt to launch rockets from Gaza on to Israeli towns and cities and Israel responds.

So who is ultimately responsible? And which side is engaged in aggressive acts and which is carrying out defensive measures? You’d think it was obvious.

But not to some of the media covering a barrage of Palestinian missiles that killed one Israeli, injured a number of others and brought terror to the residents of Israel’s south.

Indeed, HonestReporting’s new slideshow “Defending Israel Against Claims of Excessive Force” contains many examples of the kinds of reporting repeated below.

Once again, some media have failed to note that rockets from Gaza are regularly fired into Israel. Those that land in open or non-urban areas or are successfully intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system rarely register on the media radar.

GOP to pass bill to affirm 'In God We Trust'

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- House Republicans are trying to pass a resolution to reaffirm that "In God We Trust" is the national motto of the United States.

The proposed resolution, sponsored by Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., is aimed at "supporting and encouraging the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools and other government institutions."

Republicans argue the resolution, to go to a vote Tuesday, would help reverse what they see as an informal effort to remove mention of God from public buildings, The Hill reported.

"Federal agencies and departments have been instructed that the phrase not be posted in those buildings," Forbes wrote in March. "The effect on our public schools has been chilling, as teachers and administrators do not know whether they can post our national motto on their walls."

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee argued that the resolution is a waste of time better spent working on problems such as high unemployment and budget deficits.

"Instead of addressing any of these critical issues, and instead of working to help American families keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables, we are debating whether or not to affirm and proliferate a motto that was adopted in 1956 and that is not imperiled in any respect," they wrote in a committee report.

"Without question, the Judiciary Committee has many important and time-sensitive matters within its purview," the panel's Democrats added. "The majority, however, seems intent on diverting the committee's time, resources and attention to a measure that has no force of law, only reaffirms existing law and further injects the hand of government into the private religious lives of the American people."

With the media spotlight again focusing on the Arab-Israeli conflict as the top news story from the Middle East and around the world, the time is right to launch a new series of Digital Diplomats media-training initiatives.

Our first slide show examines Israel’s media image as an aggressor using excessive force against the Palestinians. Too often, the media fails to distinguish between Palestinian aggression and Israeli self-defense.

We hope that the information in our slide show will help Israel’s Digital Diplomats recognize how the media distorts the news and how to speak out against these distortions whenever they appear. The Digital Diplomats program provides advocacy training and information to help people become effective advocates for Israel.

Israel’s Online Response to Palestinian UN Vote
September 22, 2011 11:43
by Simon Plosker
Please go to website to read more and see video
http://honestreporting.com/israels-online-response-to-palestinian-un-vote/

Even in the realm of public diplomacy, Israel is singled out for trying to defend itself. Take this article from Politico that profiles the IDF’s New Media Desk:

The IDF is also proactive on social media, with accounts on Twitter (in English, French and Arabic), the photo-sharing website Flickr and the video-posting website YouTube. “We just launched a [Facebook] page a month ago – now we have over 127,000 ‘friends,’” [Lt. Col. Avital] Leibovich bragged.

While the Internet is populated with huge amounts of anti-Israel and even anti-Semitic content, why does the media prefer to make Israel’s public relations efforts the story? Tools such as Facebook and YouTube are available to anyone to use. Yet, when Israel and her supporters utilize these platforms quite legitimately, the media singles this out as somehow newsworthy.

The next few days will see a diplomatic battle with huge potential consequences taking place at the United Nations over the unilateral Palestinian bid for statehood.

At the same time, the public diplomacy battle is being fought to explain exactly why the US, Israel and many other European and Western democracies are opposed to the Palestinian course of action.

The message is clear – a declaration of Palestinian statehood at the UN will do nothing to achieve the ultimate goal of peace. Only direct negotiations between the two parties can bring an end to the conflict and offer Palestinians (and Israelis) a better future.

To assist Israel’s efforts online, many organizations, including HonestReporting, have produced videos in the run-up to the UN vote. Please view a few of them below and spread them as widely as possible to your friends, family and through social media networks such as Facebook.

With a critical mass behind them, these videos will be seen beyond Israel’s traditional supporters.

The Truth About the Peace Process
His last video “The Truth About the West Bank” was considered to be such a threat to the distorted Palestinian historical narrative that Palestinian Authority spokespeople publicly condemned it. Now, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon is back in time for the UN vote with his latest look at “The Truth About the Peace Process”.

Barrage of Bias: Horrendous Headlines

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Horrendous-headlines-300x300Headlines often set the entire tone of an article and are the first things that the reader sees. The events of the past few days have generated some horrendous headlines. Here are just a few that we spotted:

Perhaps the worst headline belonged to The Independent, which attributed to Israel uniquely malevolent qualities. Was Israel really only out for “revenge” on Palestinians as a whole rather than any obvious military objectives such as defending its civilians from rocket attacks and targeting terrorists? Not according to The Independent.

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Independent200811

If it wasn’t a terrorist attack then what was it? The Christian Science Monitor isn’t quite sure, putting the word “terrorist” in quotation marks. Why not simply state that the attacks were carried out by Gaza terrorists instead of “militants”?

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Csm180811

The Daily Telegraph needs reminding exactly who was responsible for the terrorist attack in the first place. Aside from the now standard use of the term “militant”, this headline implies that the Israelis were the initiators of the incident, apparently carrying out a cross-border “raid” rather than engaging terrorists who had already attacked Israeli civilians.

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Telegraph190811

The Daily Telegraph continued with another headline which could easily be misinterpreted to imply that the terrorist attack was passively aimed at the “Egyptian border” rather than Israeli civilian targets.

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Telegraph190811ii

The Financial Times seemed to make it perfectly clear who was responsible for every casualty of both the initial Palestinian terrorist attack and the Israeli response, lumping everything into “Israel attacks”.

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Ft180811

A day later, the FT also followed up with a headline that drew a moral equivalence between Palestinian terror and Israeli responses.

HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Ft190811

Irrespective of the accuracy or otherwise of the article itself, headlines are important. Five times more people read the headline than the actual text of the article itself.

Barrage of Bias: Best of British?

The UK is at the center of the assault on Israel's legitimacy - a key reason we recently merged HR UK with the main HonestReporting site.

The UK media matters. Unfortunately the British papers have once again demonstrated their anti-Israel bias. Head to Backspin to see some examples:

The UK has been recognized as one of the globe’s major centers of anti-Israel activity in the assault on Israel’s legitimacy.

This is reflected in the amount of material that HonestReporting continues to dedicate to the UK media, which is itself a major contributor to the hostile environment that has encouraged the demonization of Israel and BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) campaigns.

Media giants such as the BBC have a reach far beyond British shores while outlets such as The Guardian, which displays an outright hostility towards Israel, continue to gain ground with a substantial online readership in the USA.

Israeli Government Video Irks Palestinians

July 28, 2011 13:56 by Simon Plosker

Congratulations to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon for taking the initiative in the vital battleground of social media.

Ayalon’s YouTube video “The Truth About the West Bank” is evidently considered to be such a threat to the distorted Palestinian historical narrative that Saeb Erekat (who still appears to be the chief Palestinian negotiator despite resigning from the position in February 2011) has responded by publicly condemning the video in no uncertain terms.

Here’s your chance to help Israel online.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGYxLWUKwWo&feature=player_embedded

It’s really simple – click on the video and watch as Danny Ayalon explains the status of the West Bank. In September the Palestinian Authority plans to tie Israel up in legal knots at the UN with an appeal for statehood in the West Bank and Gaza based on the 1948 armistice line (commonly and misleadingly referred to as the “1967 borders”).

Wherever you are on the political map, it’s time that the world is reminded of Israel’s historical and legal rights as well as how Israel found itself in control of the disputed territories.

By simply clicking on this video or sharing it on social media platforms such as Facebook, you won’t just be reminding your own friends and friends of Israel of the facts. You will also be promoting this material “beyond the choir” to the millions of people who browse YouTube and know nothing of the Israeli narrative.

Evidently, the Palestinians find it difficult when Israel reasserts its rights in the face of the assault on the country’s legitimacy. According to the PA press release:

With this video, the Israeli government has left no doubt on its pro-conflict agenda. Now, the international community knows the Israeli government is committed to denying the Palestinian people their inalienable right to self-determination and on continuing their illegal and colonial enterprise in the occupied Palestinian territory”, said Dr. Saeb Erakat.

Dr. Erakat said this video, presented by the Israeli deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Danny Ayalon, denies the validity of UN resolutions and claims that the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are a legitimate part of Israel. He added, “This is not an amateur video prepared by an extremist group. An official representing the State of Israel presents a cynical and falsified account of history and international law.

Dr. Erakat continued: “In its desperate attempt to gear international discourse away from the pursuit of genuine peace to the outdated arguments of those who oppose it, this official video went as far as discarding United Nations Resolution 181 (II).” “I want to remind the government of Israel that it was accepted at the UN as a full member based on its acceptance of this resolution” said Dr. Erakat.
HONEST REPORTING Defending Israel from Media Bias plz read REGULAR UPDATES - Page 40 Dannyayalon-e1311850305735
Danny Ayalon

In reaction to the condemnation, Ayalon said: “For too long the Palestinian narrative of international law and rights has gone unchallenged and this over the top reaction to a public diplomacy video proves that they are acting like spoilt children who have had their way for too long. They are unable to challenge a single fact in the video and have completely avoided a legitimate and honest discussion on the issues.

In the press release, Erekat claims that Israel was accepted to the United Nations on the basis of UN General Assembly Resolution 181. “This false claims shows that Erekat misconstrues international law and its system proving exactly how misguided the Palestinian attempt to have their unilaterally declared state recognized at the United Nations really is. Israel was admitted as a full United Nations member in 1949 by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 273, after a recommendation by the Security Council, because it met the criteria of statehood and signed armistice agreements with our neighbors, something the Palestinians should bear in mind before they further their confrontational and damaging plan towards September.

Help us to help Israel get the facts out. Spread this video and make a difference.

GPO Warns Flotilla Journalists
June 26, 2011 13:53 by Simon Plosker
Oren Helman
Writing in a 22 June op-ed for YNet, HonestReporting’s Managing Editor Simon Plosker stated:
We should all be extremely concerned by the announcement that among those sailing on the imminent flotilla to Gaza are journalists representing mainstream media, including the New York Times and camera crews from CNN and CBS.
He also said that:
Israel would do well to remind those journalists on board the flotilla that they will be active participants in an illegal attempt to break what is a legal naval blockade under international law.
It appears that the Israeli government agrees. The Director of the Government Press Office, Oren Helman, has sent a letter to all members of the foreign media in Israel warning of the consequences of taking part in the flotilla:
I would like to make it clear to you and to the media that you represent, that participation in the flotilla is an intentional violation of Israeli law and is liable to lead to participants being denied entry into the State of Israel for ten years, to the impoundment of their equipment and to additional sanctions.
I implore you to avoid taking part in this provocative and dangerous event, the purpose of which is to undermine Israel’s right to defend itself and to knowingly violate Israeli law.
Unlike in neighboring Arab states where foreign media are either barred from reporting e.g. the Syrian uprising, or restricted by government appointed “minders” e.g. Libya, the foreign press have almost virtual freedom to report from Israel free from intimidation or threats.
Israel does, however, have the right to draw its own red lines, particularly when journalists are involved in activities that break the law or threaten the security of the state. In this case, those members of the press who are planning to “embed” themselves with the flotilla certainly cannot claim that they haven’t been warned.
UPDATE 27 JUNE 2011: According to Reuters, the Israeli government is reconsidering its threat to bar foreign journalists from entering the country for 10 years.
Why Does Israel Need to Maintain a Naval Blockade?
Find out in this IDF video:

Post  Admin Fri 24 Jun 2011, 4:14 pm

This opinion piece by HR Managing Editor Simon Plosker was originally published on YNet News on 22 June 2011.
“We are in a battle, and more than half of this battle is taking place in the battlefield of the media.” So said Al-Qaeda’s new leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in November 2005. But what happens when the media attempts to define the physical battlefield by becoming active participants in the story?
We should all be extremely concerned by the announcement that among those sailing on the imminent flotilla to Gaza are journalists representing mainstream media, including the New York Times and camera crews from CNN and CBS.
This is a clear example of the symbiotic relationship between the media and anti-Israel agitators such as those behind the flotilla. After all, it wasn’t the violent actions of the passengers on board the Mavi Marmara that caused Israel so much damage – it was the diplomatic and public relations fallout from an incident that occupied the international press for days after the event.
The “martyrdom” of nine Turkish passengers constituted a PR success for the IHH organization and its cohorts. Clearly then the only reason the mainstream media would jump on board the next flotilla would be the prospect of capturing a repeat performance.

Leaked: Assad Regime Tied to Israel Border Riots
June 15, 2011 15:34 by Simon Plosker
We criticized the media for taking Syrian propaganda at face value in the wake of incidents on the Israeli-Syrian border. Unverified casualty figures were broadcast despite their being based solely on Syrian claims.
Despite the media’s romanticism for a story of Palestinian “refugees” attempting to return to their “former homes”, a Syrian opposition group published details of Syrian government payments to those involved in the border riots and infiltrations.
Now, Daily Telegraph blogger and spokesman for Just Journalism Michael Weiss has published what appears to be a leaked document detailing how the Syrian authorities actively helped to create the border confrontations as a way to distract attention from the brutal campaign that the Assad regime is currently conducting against its own civilian population.
Here is the entire document, attributed to the “Office of the Mayor” in Al-Qunaitera province:
After an urgent meeting convened by the security committee on Saturday in the presence of the Mayor of al-Qunaitera, Major General Asef Shawkat -Deputy Chief of Staff for the Armed Forces-, and chiefs of security and military (intelligence) branches in the province, the following was decided:
All security, military, and contingent units in the province, Ain-el-Tina and the old al-Qunaitera are hereby ordered to grant permission of passage to all twenty vehicles (47 passenger capacity) with the attached plate numbers that are scheduled to arrive at ten in the morning on Sunday May 15, 2011 without being questioned or stopped until it reaches or frontier defense locations.
Permission is hereby granted allowing approaching crowds to cross the cease fire line (with Israel) towards the occupied Majdal-Shamms, and to further allow them to engage physically with each other in front of United Nations agents and offices. Furthermore, there is no objection if a few shots are fired in the air.
Captain Samer Shahin from the military intelligence division is hereby appointed to the leadership of the group assigned to break-in and infiltrate deep into the occupied Syrian Golan Heights with a specified pathway to avoid land mines.
It is essential to ensure that no one carries military identification or a weapon as they enter with a strict emphasis on the peaceful and spontaneous nature of the protest.
The provincial security committee meeting is considered in constant deliberation in coordination with the Center.

As Weiss concludes:

This document – which I have good reason to believe is absolutely genuine – appears to represent the first piece of regime-created evidence that Assad has cynically tried to manipulate Western and Arabic media during three-month Syrian uprising.

HONEST REPORTING
Syria Pays Cash For Riot, Media Takes Propaganda For Free

Once again, a flood of headlines present Israel as an aggressor responsible for the deaths of dozens of unarmed civilians. Was this really a peaceful protest or another Syrian-engineered attempt to breach Israel's border?
Where did the media get it right and where did it go wrong?

How the media report on Jerusalem has a tremendous impact on public policy. The Palestinian Authority is claiming that Jerusalem -- including the Old City -- will be "restored" to Arab control as capital of their new state.

The media stubbornly clings to the notion that there are two separate cities of Jerusalem, East and West, and that the eastern half, including the Western Wall in the Old City, lacks Jewish legitimacy.
HonestReporting investigates the issue, including interviews with Jewish refugees from 1948.

HONEST REPORTING

May 15, 2011 16:09 by Simon Plosker
According to a New York Times report, a second flotilla of vessels led by the Turkish Mavi Marmara is due to sail for Gaza within the next few months. Last time, the real motives and agenda of those involved in the flotilla only became clear after Israeli commandos were attacked by extremists brandishing weapons.
Last time, the flotilla organizers were allowed to sell a false narrative of so-called “peace activists” delivering humanitarian aid to Gazans suffering a humanitarian crisis as a result of an Israeli blockade.

This time, there is no excuse for the media not to question the agenda behind a second flotilla and to include the relevant context. The New York Times, however, has published such a shoddy piece of journalism that it is difficult to believe how such an article was allowed in the newspaper of record.

Where is the context?

Honest Reporting
Goldstone: If I Had Known
Then What I Know Now…
Judge Richard Goldstone, head of the infamous UN panel that issued the Goldstone Report in 2009, backtracked on his most serious accusations on Friday.

The Goldstone Report had accused Israel and Hamas of “actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity” during the 2008 Gaza War.

Goldstone’s about-face includes a reversal on the contentious claim that Israel intentionally targeted Palestinian civilians.

Investigations into some 400 incidents from the war, cited by another recent UN report, “indicate that civilians were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy,” Goldstone wrote in an op-ed published in the Washington Post:

“I regret that our fact-finding mission did not have such evidence explaining the circumstances in which we said civilians in Gaza were targeted, because it probably would have influenced our findings about intentionality and war crimes.”

Find out what Judge Richard Goldstone had to say about the Goldstone Report.

Dear Friends of HonestReporting,

I'm writing you for one simple reason: We need your financial support now to continue our efforts fighting anti-Israel media bias.

Like you, I'm often astonished by the lengths some journalists go to write stories from an anti-Israel perspective. The world deserves to know the truth about Israel, and the key to doing this is empowering a grassroots approach: And that's exactly what we are doing. And it's working.

You asked us for a new interactive community based website. We listened. Our new multi-platform website is attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, and is one of the first places people turn to for breaking news about Israel. Along with our Facebook page, YouTube channel, and Digital Diplomats advocacy course, our work is being delivered to millions of people. And that counts - because now our work is being spread far beyond the "choir" of Israel supporters.

We are reaching key audiences of those who are undecided on matters concerning Israel - before biased reporting can sway public opinion.

And all these efforts are a result of the resources you have invested in us. But we need to keep going. So please give a donation now - because working together - we are making a real difference for Israel.

Thank you,

HONEST REPORTING
Defending Media from Israel Bias

HonestReporting was formed in 2000 by a small group of British college students looking to respond to unfair coverage against Israel in the wake of the second Intifada. In 2001, the project became a major organization in its own right as a US non-profit organization (501c3) with an Independent Board of Directors.

In February of 2006, HonestReporting was granted independent Charitable Organization status in Israel to complement its US status.

Why is the struggle for media fairness so important? The media sways public opinion, which directly affects foreign policy towards Israel and in turn the lives of her citizens. One person alone may not impact this struggle, but thousands united can!
