Appeals Court Rules in Favor of California Christian Arrested for Reading Bible Aloud Outside DMV

PASADENA, Calif. — A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of a Christian who was arrested six years ago for reading the Bible aloud outside of a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court decision on Wednesday that granted summary judgment to the police officer who arrested Mark Mackey for his Bible-reading. Mackey had civilly sued the officer following his arrest, a legal challenge that was then placed on hold until after he was exonerated in criminal court.

70 Nations Gathered In Paris Unanimously Call For Creation Of Palestinian State
The global community has reaffirmed their commitment to a Palestinian state, without further action against Israel...for now.
On Sunday, the 70 nations that gathered in Paris for a conference on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict unanimously agreed to call for the creation of a Palestinian state.
The joint declaration that was issued at the conclusion of the conference also endorsed UN Security Council Resolution 2334 which was adopted on December 23rd and the six principles that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out in his 71 minute speech on December 28th.
The good news is that this conference did not immediately recognize a Palestinian state, nor does it appear that additional action will be taken at the UN Security Council before Donald Trump is inaugurated on Friday.
It had been feared that this conference may attempt to impose some sort of a solution on the Israelis and the Palestinians, but that didn't come to pass. Instead, the conference participants agreed to work toward "a negotiated solution with two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security".
So the global community has clearly reaffirmed their commitment to a Palestinian state, but the outcome of this conference was not nearly as bad for Israel as many had been anticipating.

3D-printed military drones have been explored for several years, with some successes reported. In May of 2013, Robo Raven was announced which incorporated 3D-printed components to produce independently flapping wings.
This development was followed shortly after by the Department of Defense funding a project at the University of Virginia for what would become the first fully 3D-printed military-grade drone, called The Razor.

Radical leftists are planning to make January 20th the most chaotic Inauguration Day in American history. Their stated goal is to "disrupt" the Inauguration festivities as much as possible, and they are planning a wide range of "actions" to achieve that stated goal.

Some of the more moderate groups are using terms such as "civil resistance" and "civil disobedience", but others are openly talking about "blockades", jumping barricades, throwing projectiles and "citywide paralysis".

My hope is that all of their efforts will turn out to be a big flop, but it is important to understand that these groups are well funded, highly organized and extremely motivated.

The election of Donald Trump has been perhaps the single most galvanizing moment for the radical left in modern American history, and they are working very hard to turn January 20th into a major political statement.

In fact, just recently one activist group took out a full page ad in the New York Times...

Thousands of activists, journalists, scientists, entertainers, and other prominent voices took out a full-page call to action in the New York Times on Wednesday making clear their rejection of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence with the simple message: "No!"

"Stop the Trump/Pence regime before it starts! In the name of humanity we refuse to accept a fascist America!" the ad states, followed by a list of signatories that includes scholar Cornel West; author Alice Walker; Chase Iron Eyes of the Standing Rock Sioux; educator Bill Ayers; poet Saul Williams; CNN's Marc Lamont Hill; Carl Dix of the Communist Party USA; and numerous others.

The ad pointed people to refusefascism.org, and it asserted that Trump must be stopped whether he was legitimately elected or not...

Trump promises to inflict repression and suffering on people in this country, to deport millions, to increase violence up to the use of nuclear weapons on people across the globe, and to inflict catastrophes upon the planet itself.

He has assembled a cabinet of Christian fundamentalist fanatics, war mongers, racists, science deniers. NO! His regime must not be allowed to consolidate. We REFUSE to accept a Fascist America!

If you go to refusefascism.org, you will discover that the protests that they are organizing in Washington D.C. will begin on January 14th. They say that they want to "stop the Trump-Pence regime before it starts", and they hope to have protests going "every day and every night" without interruption through at least January 20th.

Another group that plans to kick things off on January 14th is DisruptJ20. Of course that is short for "Disrupt January 20th". If you go to their official website, you will find a long slate of events that have already been scheduled.

According to Legba Carrefour, a spokesperson for DisruptJ20, one of the goals of the group is to block major transportation routes into and throughout our nation's capital. And he is not shy about the fact that they literally want to "shut down the Inauguration"...

"We are planning to shut down the inauguration, that's the short of it," he says. "We're pretty literal about that, we are trying to create citywide paralysis on a level that I don't think has been seen in D.C. before. We're trying to shut down pretty much every ingress into the city as well as every checkpoint around the actual inauguration parade route."

If Carrefour and his fellow conspirators are able to actually accomplish that, it truly would be unprecedented.

And while DisruptJ20 is not publicly advocating violence, they are not exactly discouraging it either...

Carrefour says DisruptJ20 has no publicly announced plans to jump barricades along the inauguration parade route or throw projectiles at the new president, but that autonomous direct actions are encouraged.

"I can't comment on specific stuff we're doing like that, mostly because that would be illegal. But, yeah, it will get pretty crazy, I expect," he says. "'Have fun!' I say."

After the rioting that we have seen in Baltimore, Ferguson, Charlotte and many other communities around the nation in recent years, I hope that authorities are taking these threats quite seriously.

Once Donald Trump won the election, many conservatives seemed to think that the war was won. But the truth of the matter is that many on the left were completely blindsided by Trump's surprise victory, and now that they are fully awake they are gearing up for battle like never before.

And these protests are not going to end on January 20th. In fact, abortion advocates are hoping to get close to a million women into Washington D.C. on the day following the Inauguration to protest for abortion rights.

Filmmaker and liberal icon Michael Moore has announced his plans to attend the Women's March on Washington to protest Donald Trump's inauguration later this month and has called for sore loser liberals to go further -- by staging protests acts of resistance through the first 100 days of Trump's presidency.

In an appearance, this weekend on MSNBC's The Last Word, the 62-year-old Trumpland and Fahrenheit 9/11 director made a "call to arms" to those opposed to Trump's presidency to join the Women's March on Washington scheduled for January 21, the day after the presidential inauguration.

"It's important that everybody go there," Moore told MSNBC's Ari Melber.

Of course it is easy to imagine how all of this could spiral wildly out of control. If Trump cracks down on these protests really hard in an attempt to restore law and order, that could end up sparking a dramatic backlash against his "police state tactics".

And if the protests become even bigger and more violent, Trump could respond by cracking down even more harshly.

Let us hope for some really cold weather in D.C. at the end of January so that as many troublemakers as possible get discouraged and stay home.

Violent protests, blockades and riots aren't going to solve anything, and they could easily open fresh wounds in a nation that is becoming more divided with each passing day.

A technique known as a "gene drive" uses molecular mechanisms to increase the inheritance of an engineered trait far above normal, all but ensuring that the offspring carry the new trait, whether harmful or not.
The highly reported CRISPR-Cas9 technology, which was introduced in 2013 and proliferated in 2016, now allows even amateurs to experiment and for low cost.
The combination of using gene drive techniques with CRISPR-Cas9 could be the release of newly created species that would, within just a dozen generations, completely push out all natural versions.
How it Works
Sexual reproduction owes its success to the system by which genetic traits are encoded on the alleles of both parents. In theory, both alleles would have an equal chance of being passed on and some would present greater survival chances to offspring.
Natural gene drives are molecular mechanisms that give one allele a greater chance of being transmitted (above 50%), but in the long term healthy traits are favored.

Artificial gene drives circumvent this natural process by boosting transmission rate for a particular trait far above normal, even if it is detrimental to the organism.

Palestinians took to the streets and social media this week to celebrate the truck-ramming attack in Jerusalem in which 4 IDF soldiers were killed.
The street celebrations included the handing out of sweets while Palestinian social media promoted a post of Fadi al-Qanbar's (the terrorist who drove the truck into the soldiers) sister displaying a big smile and commenting "thank Allah for his saintly death" after news that her brother had died in the act of killing Israeli soldiers.
This was followed by another celebration in which the terrorist's mother was honored at a community celebration who proceed to throw flowers to the cheering audience.

In attendance of this celebration was the PA Prime Minister. Had any other government official in the world been present for such celebration their would be world outcry.
However the double standard towards PA leadership has been a fact of life for decades.

A movement of the eyes, lifting one corner of the mouth, and even a barely perceptible movement of fingers and toes. Now a machine called AVATAR is capable of detecting lies by analyzing a person's facial expressions, voice changes and body language reactions, all with a video camera.

Israel Prepares For Hezbollah Threat In 2017
A senior Israeli defense official said that the IDF is cautiously optimistic about making it through the coming year without having to conduct major combat operations, unless a preemptive strike against the Lebanon-based Shiite terrorist organization Hezbollah becomes necessary.
Defense News reported on Monday.
"The probability for war in 2017, generally speaking, is low," the official said, but with a caveat: "Due to the dynamic of escalation, we might find ourselves in one."

But this time around, it appears that the Obama administration was working very hard behind the scenes to get this resolution pushed through the Security Council before the end of Obama's term. At least that is what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is claiming...

"From the information that we have, we have no doubt that the Obama administration initiated it, stood behind it, coordinated on the wording and demanded that it be passed," Netanyahu said in a statement. "This is, of course, in complete contradiction of the traditional American policy that was committed to not trying to dictate terms for a permanent agreement, like any issue related to them in the Security Council, and, of course, the explicit commitment of President Obama himself, in 2011, to refrain from such steps."

I am sure that there will be a tremendous amount of debate about to what extent the U.S. was involved in creating and drafting this resolution, but there is one thing that is exceedingly clear.

The ultimate decision as to whether or not this resolution would be adopted was in the hands of one man. Barack Obama knew very well that he had this power, and in the end he ultimately decided to betray Israel.

And now that our government has cursed Israel at the UN, our entire nation will be cursed as a result.

In the Scriptures we are repeatedly told that God will bless those that bless Israel and will curse those that curse Israel.

When Barack Obama blocked a similar resolution that France wanted to submit for a vote in September 2015, it resulted in America being blessed, and we definitely have been blessed over the past 16 months.

But now that Barack Obama has reversed course and has betrayed Israel, we will most assuredly be cursed. In the days ahead we will see how this plays out, and perhaps we can get some hints about what may happen by reviewing recent history.

There have literally been dozens of instances in recent decades when the U.S. has been hit by some sort of immediate disaster when it has made a move toward the dividing of the land of Israel.

The following are ten of the most prominent examples that stand out to me...

#1 The last time the U.S. government refused to veto an anti-Israel resolution at the UN Security Council was in 1979. On March 22nd, 1979 the Carter administration chose not to veto UN Resolution 446.

Four days after that on March 26th, the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed in Washington. As a result of that treaty, Israel gave up a tremendous amount of territory. Two days later, on March 28th, the worst nuclear power plant disaster in U.S. history made headlines all over the globe. The following comes from Wikipedia...

The Three Mile Island accident was a partial nuclear meltdown that occurred on March 28, 1979, in reactor number 2 of Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station (TMI-2) in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was the most significant accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history.[2] The incident was rated a five on the seven-point International Nuclear Event Scale: Accident With Wider Consequences.[3][4]

#2 On October 30th, 1991 President George H. W. Bush opened the Madrid Peace Conference which brought Israelis and Palestinians together to negotiate for the very first time.

In his opening speech, Bush told Israel that "territorial compromise is essential for peace". At the exact same time, "the Perfect Storm" was brewing in the north Atlantic.

This legendary storm traveled 1000 miles the wrong direction and sent 35 foot waves slamming directly into President Bush's home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

#3 On August 23rd, 1992 the Madrid Peace Conference moved to Washington D.C., and the very next day Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Florida causing 30 billion dollars in damage. It was the worst natural disaster up to that time in U.S. history.

#4 On January 16th, 1994 President Clinton met with President Assad of Syria to discuss the possibility of Israel giving up the Golan Heights. Within 24 hours, the devastating Northridge earthquake hit southern California. It was the second worst natural disaster up to that time in U.S. history.

#5 On January 21st, 1998 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the White House but received a very cold reception. In fact, President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright actually refused to have lunch with him. That exact same day the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, sending the Clinton presidency into a tailspin from which it would never recover.

#6 On September 28th, 1998 Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was working on finalizing a plan which would have had Israel give up approximately 13 percent of Judea and Samaria. On that precise day, Hurricane George slammed into the Gulf Coast with wind gusts of up to 175 miles an hour.

#7 On May 3rd, 1999 Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was supposed to hold a press conference to declare the creation of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital.

On that precise day, the most powerful tornadoes ever recorded in the U.S. ripped through Oklahoma and Kansas. At one point one of the tornadoes actually had a recorded wind speed of 316 miles an hour.

#8 On April 30th, 2003, "the Road Map to Peace" that had been developed by the so-called "Quartet" was presented to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon by U.S. Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer.

Over the next seven days, the U.S. was hit by a staggering 412 tornadoes. It was the largest tornado cluster ever recorded up to that time.

#9 In 2005, President George W. Bush (the son of George H. W. Bush) convinced Israel that it was necessary to remove all of the Jewish settlers out of Gaza and turn it over entirely to the Palestinians.

According to the New York Times, the very last of the settlers were evacuated on August 23, 2005. On that precise day, a storm that would be given the name "Katrina" started forming over the Bahamas.

The city of New Orleans still has not fully recovered from the damage that storm caused, and it ranked as the costliest natural disaster in all of U.S. history up to that time.

#10 On May 19th, 2011 Barack Obama told Israel that there must be a return to the pre-1967 borders. Three days later on May 22nd a half-mile wide EF-5 multiple-vortex tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri. According to Wikipedia, it was "the costliest single tornado in U.S. history."

The UN Security Council resolution that was passed on Friday is the biggest betrayal of Israel in modern history. As I explained in my last article, I believe that America's reprieve is now over and all hell is about to break loose in this country.

When Barack Obama blocked the UN Security Council from dividing the land of Israel in September 2015, according to the Word of God we should have been blessed as a nation as a result, and we were blessed.

But now Barack Obama has cursed Israel by stabbing them in the back at the United Nations, and according to the Word of God we should be cursed as a nation as a result.

In the United States today, more than 60 million people live in multi-generational households, and it is a good thing to have a tight family.
But at some point young adults need to learn how to live their own independent lives, and in millions of cases this independence is being delayed or is never happening at all.

Merry Christmas Building and Loan!: The Gospel Message in "It's a Wonderful Life
It's one of the most beloved movies of all time. But I wonder how many people miss the gospel message in "It's a Wonderful Life."
I love the film, "It's a Wonderful Life." My family watches it every Christmas. I sometimes think about how much fun it would be to visit Bedford Falls, and meet all those delightful characters--even Old Man Potter.
My friend and long-time BreakPoint colleague, Anne Morse, recently did just that: well, almost. She visited Seneca Falls, New York, which, legend has it, is the town on which Frank Capra based his fictional Bedford Falls.
It really does look amazingly like Bedford Falls, and every December the town holds an "It's a Wonderful Life" festival. Festival-goers can't resist running down the street yelling "Merry Christmas, Emporium! Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!"--just like Jimmy Stewart did. They can also chat with "Uncle Billy," "Old Man Potter," and other characters.

What comes to mind when you hear the words National Geographic? Do you think of exotic pictures from the jungles of Africa or up-close documentation of an erupting volcano or the discovery of a stone-age, Amazon tribe previously lost to civilization? If so, brace yourself.

The January, 2017 edition of this venerated publication focuses on the "Gender Revolution," and it features the photo of a 9-year-old "trans-activist" on the front cover, accompanied by this quote: "The best thing about being a girl is, now I don't have to pretend to be a boy."
According to Fusion.net, this young child, named Avery Jackson, "rose to stardom last year when she began documenting her transition with 'Avery Chats,' a series of YouTube videos describing how she came to understand her identity at such a young age and eventually came out to her parents as trans."
Little Avery explained in the first video, "When I was born, doctors said I was a boy, but I knew in my heart I was a girl. So I may have some boy body parts, but that's not wrong, that is OK."
As for National Geographic's interest in all this, editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg explains, "We wanted to look at how traditional gender roles play out all over the world, but also look into gender as a spectrum.
There's lots of coverage on celebrities, but there wasn't an understanding on real people and the issues we face every day in classrooms or workplaces in regards to gender."

In Jerusalem Dec. 14, a Palestinian terrorist named Khamad Khadr Ashikh stabbed two Israeli police officers and a 12-year-old Israeli boy in the head with a large screwdriver.
The New York Times has a bureau in Israel, with a staff of reporters. So does the Washington Post. Either of them could have sent a reporter to the hospital to interview the victims.
Their reporter could have called the victims' families. He or she could have visited Khamad Khadr Ashikh's home town, and asked his relatives and neighbors whether they consider the stabber to be a terrorist or a hero.

The Times or the Post at least could have told its readers what the Palestinian Authority (PA) was saying about the attack on PA-controlled television and radio stations.
But that kind of reporting is fraught with risk, if you have a pro-Palestinian agenda. Hospitalized stabbing victims inevitably generate sympathy for Israel's side. Palestinian neighbors and relatives typically praise perpetrators of anti-Jewish violence, so that would make the Palestinian cause look bad.
As for the PA, its official print, TV and radio outlets always portray Palestinian terrorists as heroes--so acknowledging what the PA is saying would further discredit the Palestinian cause.

Fall of Aleppo Could Be Bad News for Israel
Israel should be extremely concerned over the fall of Aleppo, as it means that Iran and its proxy Hezbollah have achieved free rein in Syria to try to establish a foothold along the Golan Heights. a Mideast expert wrote on Wednesday.

In an analysis for Israel's Channel 2 News, Ehud Ya'ari said that, aside from the "heart-wrenching carnage and destruction" the world is witnessing in Syria, "it is now clear that President Bashar Assad will remain ensconced in his palace...as long as US President-elect Donald Trump does not offer Russian President Vladimir Putin the right price for abandoning him."

Alluding to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's reported coordination with Putin -- regarding IDF operations aimed at preventing the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah and Russian air strikes too near to Israel's northern border -- Ya'ari said that if the Russian president decided to ignore the unwritten contract, he could simply order his air force to crush rebels in southern Syria.
Fortunately, however, Ya'ari continued, "This scenario is not materializing in the meantime, because Putin has his own priorities: seeking understandings with Trump over Europe and the Mideast, and -- if that doesn't bear fruit -- trampling the rebels in the province of Idlib, the last important Syrian area under their control."
Still, Ya'ari asserted, "It is important to remember that Trump and his team have no great interest in removing Assad. If anything, they want to keep Tehran at bay and make a deal with Russia, which does not want to see Iran become hegemonic in the Fertile Crescent."
The bottom line, whichever way one looks at it, Ya'ari said, is that "there is no longer any real threat to the regime that has become a protégé of Tehran in every respect."
This is all bad news for Israel, he noted, which "has been left without the ability to influence events beyond the strip of villages along the Golan Heights" -- a situation that might have been avoided, he said, if Israel had assisted the rebels in posing a threat to Assad. "But since Israel was hesitant to do this, and US President Barack Obama withdrew his hand from Syria, the Russians entered," he wrote.
As a result, Ya'ari argued, rather than losing Syria and putting a dent in its other expansionist regional aims, Iran now has a "diving board" from which to catapult itself. "In another decade, when Iran finishes upgrading its outdated army, all of this will be greatly significant," he pointed out.
In an interview with The Algemeiner last Thursday -- following a week in which Israel was reported by Arab media outlets to have struck Hezbollah convoys in Syria -- a former IDF military intelligence analyst said that the possibility of the Lebanon-based Shiite terrorist organization being equipped by the Syrian regime or Iran with chemical and biological weapons could not be ruled out.

Iran Opens Amusement Park For Kids To Practice Attacks On Israel
Children in Iran now have the opportunity to train for jihad in a new educational theme park that both indoctrinates them on the evils of Israel and the United States as well as let's them practice shooting at Western targets.
The Middle East Media Research Institute, also known as MEMRI, has obtained an interview given to a media source close to the Iranian Republican Guard as it reported on the educational theme park called City of Games for Revolutionary Children Park.
In Mashad, Iran's second largest city, the park was open free of charge for children between the ages of 8 and 13. The attraction ran for several weeks with the option to run for longer if interest was high. According to the interview, the park was in "high demand" and could be expanded soon.
The City of Games of Revolutionary Children Park consists of 12 stages of jihadist indoctrination. Hamid Sadeghi, the director of the institute hosting the park, described the mission as one that seeks "to convey to the children messages about fighting, the Holy Defense and current global issues, through games, amusements, and group activities."

The pair made the call in the bioethical journal which Julian Savulescu publishes titled 'Bioethics'. Their argument is founded on the idea that those who refuse to provide certain treatments are being unprofessional and have no place in modern medicine.

With news this week that the name Muhammad, with one spelling or another, ranks as 2016's second most popular boy's name in Britain after Oliver, what's the trend in the U.S.? Quite a contrast.
Quite a contrast.
While the population of Muslims in the U.S. is growing fast, due to both a high birth rate and immigration, the perhaps surprising news in the states is that seven of the most popular boys' names this year are of Hebrew origin.
They include Noah, Michael, Elijah, Jacob, Ethan, James and Benjamin.
In fact, of the top boys' names in the U.S. in 2016, 35 are of Hebrew origin.

Muhammad is not among the top 100, though the most common alternate spellings of the name of Islam's founder include Mohammed, Muhammed, Mohammad or Mohamed. Oliver doesn't make the list in the U.S., either.
The trend in popularity of Hebrew names for both boys and girls in the U.S. is not altogether new. In 2015, the top boy's name was Jacob, according to the Social Security Administration, followed closely by Ethan, Michael, Noah and Daniel – all in the top 10.

The most popular girls names in 2016 also had a strong Hebrew influence. Among the top 10 this year were Ava (3), Isabella, which is a Spanish version of Elizabeth, (5), Abigail, (7), and Amelia (10). The English name, Elizabeth, was 14th.

What accounts for the overwhelmingly popularity of Hebrew names in the U.S.?

WorldJewishDaily.com addressed the question at the end of 2015, saying, "while Israel sometimes gets bad press in the United States, when it comes to naming our children, Hebrew names top the list."

In 2011, Stephen Prothero, a Boston University religion professor, CNN contributor and author of "God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions that Run the World," looked at the trend and asked the question: Where are the Christian names?

"It's sort of a silly question," said Joseph Farah, founder of WND.com and author of the new book "The Restitution of All Things: Israel, Christians and the End of the Age."

"American evangelicals in particular rightly see little distinction between traditional ‘Christian' names like Mary and Joseph and ‘Hebrew' names, since they are of the same origin. Christianity itself is of Hebrew origin – as are the names Mary and Joseph or Miriam and Yosef."

Farah says American Christians are simply going back to the Bible, which is a completely Hebrew or Jewish-authored holy book – both Old and New Testament – and selecting names for their children that inspire them.

"It's all part of the trend I write about in ‘The Restitution of All Things,'" said Farah. "Christians are rediscovering the Hebrew roots of their faith. But Hebrew isn't just in the roots of Christianity. It's in the trunk, the branches and the leaves. It's in the very DNA of the faith – and there is a growing recognition and understanding of that fact within an Israel-centric component of Christianity."

Farah adds that every single so-called "Christian" name is actually or Hebrew origin.

"What's the ultimate Christian name?" he asks rhetorically. "Would it be ‘Jesus'? That's simply a Greek version of Yeshua, the Messiah's real Hebrew name, usually rendered ‘Joshua' in English. Parents do not have final say over what is taught to their children according to a judge in Ontario, Canada. He made the comments while ruling against a Greek Orthodox father who wanted to be notified when his children were going to be taught about things such as homosexuality and abortion in a way which violated his religious beliefs.

While Palestinian Authority (PA) leader Mahmoud Abbas was accepting praise for sending Palestinian firefighters to help put out fires in Israel, the PA Finance Ministry was busy doing the paperwork to start paying salaries to the Palestinian arsonists who were arrested for setting many of those same fires.
So far, Israel has arrested 23 suspected arsonists connected to the hundreds of fires that raged across Israel last week, burning more than 500 homes and 32,000 acres of forests and national parks.

The growing threat from Russia has provided further impetus to the need for independent European defensive capabilities.

The winds of change are growing strong and the EU is on course to increase its defensive capabilities, whether through the more dramatic proposal to create a wholly independent EU army is realized or if the EU simply decides it needs to supplement the defensive capabilities of NATO.

Arguing in favor of European military independence, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, cited President-elect Trump's pledge to demand other NATO allies to pay their fair share and his isolationist policies as a reason to rebuild Europe's defensive capabilities.

The EU's diplomacy head carried the argument further as he called for Europe to transform itself into what he called a "superpower" that could act as a "global security power".

Mr. Juncker, who plans to push for an independent EU army capable of competing as a world power, went on to say, "the Americans, to whom we owe much ... will not ensure the security of the Europeans in the long term.

We have to do this ourselves." Just this summer, the EU representative in global politics, Federica Mogherini, released detailed plans describing the establishment of an EU army.

She had waited until Britain's referendum to exit the EU had been decided and now has she has stated that the EU must grow its military might in response to Trump's election win.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has also presented a plan to build a EU army. In mid-November, she published a piece in the German media in which she laid out her arguments for forming a European army in response to the new course that she believes both Brexit and the US election have set.

Britain has been a long-time opponent of plans for a European army, and its exit from the EU has confirmed its rejection of plans for a shared military force separate from NATO.

In September, it became known that France and Germany had already been engaged in high-level talks to create a common military force. The current proposal to create an EU command center and bring back joint EU battlegrounds may still fall short of a fully independent army, but it is an important first step.

Also on the table is the idea of a European investment fund for defense. Possibly managed by European banks, this fund could begin small and grow in size as member nations contribute. Backed by the European Investment Bank, the new force would gain both financial and strategic independence from NATO.

Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, has criticized the proposal to create a separate European army. Mr. Farage was quoted as saying, "You've got Jean-Claude Juncker using the election of President Trump as a means of trying to destroy NATO by pushing his ridiculous dream of a European army."

Mr. Farage, the first British politician to speak with Trump after he had secured the presidency, went on to agree with the new Republican president, "I have to say when Trump says America should not continue to pick up such a big bill for NATO - I think he's right. The other members do need to pull their weight, and frankly there has been no proper reassessment of what NATO is ever since the Berlin wall came down over 25 years ago."

He added that he would like to see a meeting between NATO member nations in which they discuss their commitment and the future of the alliance.
Jens Stoltenberg, former prime minister of Norway and current secretary general of NATO, has also roundly criticized the proposed EU army by calling it "a ghost of the past" and declaring that it had been put to rest.

He dismissed calls for creating a new military structure and stated that after he attended the European Defense Ministers meeting in Bratislava, "It was clearly stated that there is no intention to create a European Army; or establish a military headquarters similar to that of NATO's shape.

And it was also made clear that NATO remains the foundation for the collective defense of those countries that are part of the Alliance."

While the debate continues as to whether Europe, through the leadership of France and Germany, will create an independent EU army, what is clear is that EU member nations will increase their investment in defense.

Perhaps all it took was the push from Britain and some hard talk from Trump about allies pulling their weight, but the message has been received and all sides seem to agree that NATO allies in Europe need to contribute more for their common defense in an increasingly dangerous world.

Post-Truth, The Word Of The Year: Feelings Have Replaced Facts
Is our culture losing touch with reality? The folks who pick the official "word of the year" think so.
The Christian satire website, Babylon Bee, has had a lot of great headlines. One of my favorites so far: "Progressive Evangelical Leaders Meet to Affirm Doctrine of 'Sola Feels.'"
Adherents to this imaginary creed believe that "things that make us feel bad...are wrong. The things that give us all the happy feels...are true, right, and good." Now of course, the scary part about satire is how closely it often mirrors reality.
On a related note, Oxford Dictionaries has released its 2016 word of the year: "Post-truth," which they define as "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief."

I can hardly think of a better description of where we are right now as a culture. In fact, for those of us who've spent years calling out what has now become called "the dictatorship of relativism," it's tempting to say, "welcome to the party, guys!"
But the concept of "post-truth" is a bit different from garden variety relativism. It doesn't discount the existence of truth. French To Block Pro-Life Websites
The French government has announced plans to block pro-life websites that it considers to provide biased information about abortion while appearing to be neutral.
Under an amendment to a current "Equality and Citizenship" law, owners of pro-life sites could face a 30,000 euro fine (about $33,600) and two years in prison, the same penalties that currently apply to "the offense of obstruction to abortion," which has been illegal since 1993.
In 1993, the French government created a law that prevents pro-life activists from using "moral and psychological maneuvers" to convince women not to go through an abortion.
In one case, an 84-year-old pro-life activist named Xavier Dor was fined 10,000 euros ($13,360) for attempting to counsel women at an abortion clinic.
