this Week's Herb: Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus)

Recently a couple of people have asked me what do I know about
Bladderwrack. And my answer was…… "I've heard tell of it, but I
don't rightly know what it's for". Consequently I made it my
business to find out and to share that info with you. Now don't you
feel lucky? :-)

What I've discovered is more than interesting. I personally have a
problem with weight gain after I quit smoking a few years back. I
quit smoking, drinking and looking lustfully at women. Well ok… I
did quit smoking and drinking.

But whereas I used to have to eat a lot just to remain at 170 lbs,
now it doesn't matter how little I eat. It seems to have no effect
as if my metabolism has changed.

Bladderwrack is the herb that is commonly used in the treatment of
under active thyroid glands where the metabolism is slowed down as a
result. Where obesity is associated with thyroid trouble, this herb
may be very helpful in reducing the excess weight.

Hmmmmmm……..

I'll be the guinea pig and let y'all know how it went.

Bladderwrack is a seaweed originally used as a source of iodine, and
was used extensively to treat goiter, a swelling of the thyroid
gland related to insufficient iodine. But in the 1860s, it was
claimed that Bladderwrack, as a thyroid stimulant, could counter
obesity by increasing metabolic rate, and, since then, it has been
featured in numerous weight-loss remedies.

Bladderwrack also contains potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron,
zinc, and other minerals.

Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid glands) is a condition in which
the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones. The main
function of the thyroid gland is to regulate the body's metabolism;
it affects all parts of the body. Many of the symptoms of
hypothyroidism are associated with other illnesses, and are often
overlooked or misdiagnosed by physicians. Hypothyroidism is very
common, although many people are unaware that they have
hypothyroidism, and often go untreated for many years. The most
common symptoms of hypothyroidism are:

Fatigue
Weakness
Weight gain/difficulty losing weight
Coarse, dry hair
Hair loss
Muscle cramps/aches
Constipation
Dry skin
Irritability

SIDE EFFECTS:

There are no known side effects except TOO MUCH IODINE and
HYPERTHYROIDISM. One of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism is rapid
weight loss. That would be awful, huh?

Additionally, bladderwrack may lower cholesterol levels. Studies
suggest that some of the active compounds in bladderwrack may
inhibit the HIV virus. Other studies suggest that it may lower blood
sugar levels while potentially operating as a laxative. Fucoidan,
one of the active compounds in bladderwrack, has demonstrated blood
thinning properties in laboratory studies and a rat study has shown
improvement of blood flow in the kidneys.

But why take my word for any of this? You can do your own research
at the local library or on any Internet search engine such as
www.google.com or www.mamma.com or www.dogpile. com etc.

Until next time remember, most illness (upwards of 80% according to
experts) can be attributed to FOUR important factors that can eaten
your immune system and your ability to fight off disease. In this
order:

1. INADEQUATE REST - Research continues to prove, that no two ways
about it, good quality sleep has proven to be the single most
important factor in determining or influencing your health.

2. INABILITY TO DEAL WITH STRESS - If you run around all day like a
chicken with its head cut off, it will increase your chances of
getting ill and will aggravate, tremendously, any illness that you
already have, no matter what it is. Anxiety, depression, anger, guilt
or also STRESS factors. LEARN TO FORGIVE AND LET GO.

3. INADEQUATE OR IMPROPER NUTRITIONAL HABITS. There are a lot of
practicing vegetarians lately and some load up on the white sugar,
white flour, starches, processed and refined foods. Many whole
foods/alternative medicine type practioners believe we should be
eating at least 5 times as many fruits and vegetables as meats. Most
experts agree that most diets are seriously deficient in the amounts
of fruits and vegetables that we should be eating to remain healthy.

4. INADEQUATE EXCERCISE - A sedentary lifestyle that does not include
enough exercise will catch up with you. FIND SOME KIND OF PHYSICALLY
ENGAGING ACTIVITY EVEN IF IT'S ONLY WALKING!
