"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:11.

Noted Bible teacher E. Schuyler English told about a Bible distributor, Michael
Billester, who visited a small town in Poland shortly before World War II.

Billester gave a Bible to a villager, who was converted after reading it.

The new believer then passed the book on to others.
This cycle of conversions and sharing of faith continued until 200 people had become believers through that one Bible!

When
Billester returned to Poland in 1940, this group of Christians met
together for a worship service where he was to preach the Word of God.
It
was usually his custom to ask for testimonies, but this time Billester
suggested that several in the congregation stand and recite verses of
Scripture.

One man stood and said, "Perhaps we have misunderstood your request. Do you mean verses or chapters?"

These Polish villagers had not memorized a few select verses of the Bible, but instead whole chapters and books.
Thirteen people knew Matthew, Luke, and half of Genesis.
And another person had committed the entire book of Psalms to memory.

That single copy of the Bible given by Billester to the one new believer had certainly done its work.

Transformed lives bore witness to the power of the Word of God.

Are you passionate about learning and memorizing God's Word?
Are you sharing what you know with those who do not know Jesus?

1 John 2:5 says, "But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him."

Determine today to hide the Word of God in
your heart-
- and pass along its truth to those you come in contact with each day.

Ask the Lord to open your heart to His Word so that you can hold tightly to its truth.
Pray that He would give you opportunities to share the Bible with others.

Hide His Word in your heart!

"And have made us kings and priests to our God: and we shall reign on the earth." Revelation 5:10.

In the eleventh century, King Henry III of Bavaria grew tired of court life and the pressures of being a monarch.

He
made application to Prior Richard at a local monastery, asking to be
accepted as a contemplative and spend the rest of his life in the
monastery.

"Your Majesty," said Prior Richard, "do you
understand that the pledge here is one of obedience? That will be hard
because you have been a king."

"I understand," said Henry. "The rest of my life I will be obedient to you, as Christ leads you."

"Then
I will tell you what to do," said Prior Richard. "Go back to your
throne and serve faithfully in the place where God has put you."

When King Henry died, a statement was written:
"The King learned to rule by being obedient."

We are kings and priests!
Furthermore, the Bible says that one day we will rule with Him!
We need to get ourselves ready!

Are
you weary of parenting, ministering, praying or whatever other
assignments the Lord has given you for this season of your life?

Please, be encouraged!

God expects us to be faithful where he puts us, even in the small things.
Stay strong in the Lord!

God is preparing us for great things.
And our efforts for Him will not go unnoticed!

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11.

The word encourage (en=in+courage) simply means-
- to put courage into another,
- something we all need to do and receive regularly.

I recall how in my beginning days of ministry, after
speaking to a youth group, one of the members in attendance said to me,
"Thank you for being God's messenger to me today."

I've never forgotten
her words and those of many others along the way either.

Sadly, a cutting word can have the opposite long-term effect.

Encouragement!
So easy to give, costs nothing, and is worth its weight in gold.

The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world.
There will most likely be no ticker-tape parade for us, no monuments created in our honour.

But that does not lessen our possible impact-
- for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along;
- people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents.

Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give.

Too
often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a
listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all
of which have a potential to turn a life around.

It's overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt.

Be sure to encourage—to put courage into—someone today, especially your own loved ones.

"Dear
God, thank you for all the people who have encouraged me along the way.
They are greatly appreciated. And please help me to be an encourager to
someone else every single day just as others have encouraged me. Thank
you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name,
Amen."

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Matthew 10:16.

Nature provides us with an illustration-
- that closely parallels the insidious tactics employed by our adversary.

According to scientists-
Artic polar bears feed almost entirely on seals.

To enjoy such a meal-
- they sometimes resort to a cunning bit of trickery.

If the hole through which the seal gets his food is near the edge of the ice-
- the polar bear will take a deep breath and swim under water to its exact location.

Remaining below the surface-
- he will then make a tiny scratching sound, imitating a fish.

When
the charmed seal hears this, he dives in for a quick supper, only to
find himself suddenly entrapped in the huge, hungry embrace of his
predator.

God has sent us forth as sheep among the wolves.

There are so many theories disguising themselves as godly.

We're hungry for that meal.
But we must be wise enough to make sure it's not a trap!

Keep reading and studying the Word of God!
Pray and ask Him to reveal His truth.

The enemy loves to tempt us with a 'treat' so he can devour us!
Don't take anyone's word but God's!

"Aren't two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's consent."  Matthew 10:29.

Have you ever been in a stadium with thousands of screaming fans?
Did you wonder how God could possibly know every person there?

It's pretty mind-boggling!

But even though there are billions of people in the world-
- the Bible says God knows everything there is to know about every one of us!

Jesus, in fact, made a point of showing his disciples just how intimately the Father knew them.

Sparrows, for example, are among the least important creatures on earth.
Their life span is extremely short.

Who even notices when they die?
God does.

So why shouldn't he be more than capable of loving each and every person he's created?

What's more, he even knows the number of hairs on our heads!

The truth is-
God knows us better than we know ourselves.
He doesn't see us as a massive crowd but as individuals, and he loves each one of us.

Jesus' disciples were going out into a hostile world.
They would be mocked and threatened by hateful, dangerous people, and would even come face-to-face with demons!

Jesus wanted to assure them that their heavenly Father was in control-
- that he loved each one of them and was watching over them.

This same promise is for you, too.
Don't ever assume you're just one of the crowd.

God is-
- intimately acquainted with you
- and involved in your life.

He knows everything about you and loves you more than you know.

Who's someone you know who needs to be reminded of this truth today?

"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose
the weak things of the world to shame the strong." 1 Corinthians 1:27.

A famous violinist announced he would be playing one of the world's most expensive violins in his concert.

The first composition he played flawlessly.

And each one after that was better than the performance before.

The audience was thrilled and enamored with his perfect performance!

After bowing during the applause-
- the violinist suddenly picked up the priceless violin and smashed it to the floor, completely destroying it.

The audience gasped and looked on with horrified expressions.

That is, until the famous violinist explained he had been playing an inexpensive violin all along.

The musician then picked up the truly expensive violin and began playing it.

The sound was just as beautiful as before.
And most people couldn't even tell the difference between the two instruments.

The lesson in this illustration is that the quality of the violin was secondary to the skill of the violinist.

This is almost like our service to the Lord.

The Master can and wants to use ordinary instruments like us.

In 1 Corinthians 1:27-
Paul states that God chose foolish and weak things to shame the wise and strong.

And He did that so no one would "boast before Him." 1 Corinthians 1:29.

Like the cheap violin played by the violinist-
- we too can be instruments in the Lord's hands to bring glory to His name and blessing to those around us.

It matters not if you are unable to serve as you did before, practice your talents, or put your gifts to use as often.

God knows your every weakness and He still desires to use you right where He has placed you.

Ask God to use you as an instrument for His glory.

Pray that wherever He uses you-- you will be an influence in the lives of others.

I read about a vessel discovered over a century ago among the icebergs of the Arctic ocean.

In it was the captain, frozen as he was making his last entry in the log-book.

The crew were also discovered—some in their hammocks and some in the cabin—all frozen to death.

The last date in the log-book showed that for thirteen years that vessel had been moving among the icebergs-
- "a drifting sepulcher manned by a frozen crew."

There are some churches in a similar condition.

They have an outward form of godliness but are frozen in that-
- while they have the outward trappings of religion, they are out of touch with God and reality.

Jesus said: "For many are called, but few are chosen."Matthew 22:14.

That is, many are called by God but few prove themselves to be chosen ones.
That is, only a small percentage of confessing Christians do anything tangible about God's call to follow and serve him.

Many are cold and a few are frozen!

While millions of people around the world desperately need the gospel-
- most of us who call ourselves Christian give little for or do anything much about it.

Nor do we give much to help in that less than three percent of Christians tithe of their income for God's work.
And even then the average church spends 95 percent of its income on itself.

Our doctrine is sound-
- sound asleep."

In
the last few years we have seen a great increase in some of the worst
kind of violence and terrorism worldwide committed by radical Muslims,
all in the name of Allah.

The only answer to combat evil is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

More importantly, let us heed God's Word that says:
"'Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making
the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."Ephesians
5:14-16.

"Dear God, please use me to be a shining light in the
world's darkness and do what I can to help spread your gospel message
around the world. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.
Gratefully, in Jesus' name, Amen."

My Manna

"If my people . . . humble themselves . . . and turn from their evil ways,
then I will . . . forgive their sin, and heal their land."2 Chronicles 7:14.

Most Christians never allow themselves to
come too close to the deep thirst for God that exists at the core of
their being, for if they did, they would be compelled to get in touch
with their basic helplessness.

Why would we want to deny this?

Because to recognize our helplessness puts us in a position where we have to repent of it.
And that is something our fallen human nature pulls back from doing.

The one word that grates and irritates our carnal nature is the word "repent."

It is much easier to be given advice like:
"Read more of the Bible every day,"
"Add extra minutes to your prayer time," or
"Seize more opportunities to share your faith,"
- than to be told to repent.

All these things I have just mentioned may be excellent in themselves-
- but more is required if we are to get in touch with our deep thirst for God.

We must repent!

But repent of what?
Our stubborn commitment to independence, as well as the awful desire and practice of choosing to dig our own wells.

A passionate pursuit of God demands this.

No matter what we say with our lips-
- we will never begin to pant after God until we repent of the self-sufficiency that has made its home deep within our hearts.

This, in my opinion, is the biggest single step we can take in our
pursuit of God and the experience of having feet like "hinds' feet."

"Gracious and loving heavenly Father, help me repent deeply.
May I know at this moment a turning from self-dependence to God-dependence.
I give You my willingness.
In Jesus' name I ask it. Amen."

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person availeth much." James 5:17.

One day in the year 387-
- the great church father that played a decisive role in the development of spiritual thinking of the West was baptised.

For his mother Monika-
- it was an answer to a lifetime of prayer.

Augustine was born in the year 387 in North Africa.
His father was not a believer but his mother was a devout Christian.

Her son, however, had an unruly streak in him.
He was undisciplined, more interested in sports than schoolwork and
loved the ladies, so much so that he became a father at the age of 18.

Far from learning to be more responsible, he carried on sowing his wild oats.

Meanwhile, his mother worried herself sick about her son, to no avail.
However, she kept praying for him.

Later on he went to Milan in an effort to escape his mother’s watchful eye, but she was too smart for him.

She too came to live in Milan.

There she met the ancient and wise Father Ambrose and told him all about her wayward son.

The words he spoke to her are worth remembering for parents who are concerned about their children’s lifestyles.
"It is not possible for a son for whom so many prayers are said, to remain lost!”

At
that time Augustine, already a highly educated and well-read man was
sitting in a friend's garden reading when he heard a child singing,
"Take and read."

He took the Bible and opened it to Romans 13 where he read the passage.
He was so moved by what he read, that at that very moment he became converted.

Ambrose baptised him as well as his son while a mother was comforted at last (God does answer prayers) gratefully stood by.

Her lifelong prayers for her son paid off and saved one of the greatest leaders of the early church for posterity,

Parents, take heart.
Pray without ceasing.
God hears even if it is in his own time.

"Lord, I realise that praying for my child is as important as giving
him his daily bread. May I as a parent never forsake my duty.In Jesus'
Name,Amen."

"Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19.

D.L. Moody, was once asked to speak at a convention.

One afternoon, he asked the convention's song leader to meet him on a street corner downtown at about 6 pm.

When the song leader got there, Moody had him stand on a overturned box and sing.
This unusual spectacle attracted quite a crowd.

After speaking briefly, Moody persuaded most of the crowd to follow him to a nearby meeting place.
They followed in droves and listened intently as Moody shared the good news of Jesus.

Too soon, the convention delegates started arriving, and Moody had to stop preaching.

He
said simply, "Now we must close, as the brethren of the convention wish
to come and discuss the topic 'How to reach the masses'!"

So often, we think we have to have special training or special knowledge to tell others about Christ.

Maybe all you need to do is be creative...and think of simple ways you can share Christ with others.

Maybe it's fixing dinner for your next-door neighbour.

Maybe it's making a hospital or nursing home visit with a nice card or some flowers.

Whatever it is-
God wants you to share His love with those around you.
Don't think or talk about sharing your faith any longer...just go out and do it!

Ask God to show you someone with whom you can share His love and plan of salvation today!

"For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he
says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their
whole bodies as well. " James 3:1-5.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we all fall short.
None of us is everything God calls us to be. James 3:2.

Repentance is the way-
- to deal with the next thing that God would change in you.

The follower of Christ presses hard after God-
- going after the joy found in an honest relationship with God.

Some of you have left a church where you used to worship.
Is everything right between you and the believers there?

Forget their failure!
Did you do and say what was right?
Or did you sow discord or cause division?

Today, deal with your part.
Ask God to forgive you and make it right.

Is your marriage cold?
Have things been left undone or unsaid?
Has your attention been elsewhere?

You've focused on your spouse's failure; now look at your own.
This is first an issue between you and God.

Maybe you've cut a corner in your business dealings.
You've injured someone's reputation and his or her career has been hurt.

Have you asked God to forgive you?
Have you asked that person to forgive you?

Maybe you struggle with a private sin.
God will forgive you if you sincerely repent.

You can go forward without this besetting sin.
It could start today.

How willing we are to repent reveals our sincerity in following Christ.

Who will join me in saying:
"I want to be right with God - whatever it takes; whatever it costs."

My Manna

No one is exempt from facing obstacles.

Even as babies, we all had to overcome a lack of balance and strength in order to stand and take that first step.
And learning to place one foot in front of the other involved some falling.

But in order to walk well, we had to get up and try again.

Consider the difficulties that the Lord faced as He pursued His goal of salvation for mankind:
Jesus was ridiculed, rejected, and misunderstood.

However, Luke 9:51 illustrates His focus:
"When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem."

The Lord, knowing that He would be sentenced to death in that city, let nothing deter Him from going there.

There are several things we can do to gain this attitude of persistence.

The most important is to set goals under God's leadership-
- challenging goals that demand our best and require His help.

Then, developing a passion to make the goal a reality will likely drive us toward our desired outcome.

In addition, we should refuse to listen to criticism and instead surround ourselves with people who will encourage us.

Certain steps may fail, but we should look for a personal lesson in every defeat.

Finally, we are to believe that we can reach the goal, and then must rely on God to enable us.

Biblical success means two things:
- achieving what the Lord calls you to do
- and becoming the person He desires you to be.

Seek His specific goals for your life.

Persevering through obstacles will be a faith-building adventure-
- that teaches you to depend on the heavenly Father.

"Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here; he has risen!" Luke 24:5-6.

According to an article in Newsweek magazine-
- researchers in Jerusalem have found a tomb which they claim contained the bones of Jesus Christ.

What is your first reaction to reading that statement?
Do you scoff at how ridiculous a notion it is?
Does it make you upset?

Jesus is alive and well.
His physical being lives today in heaven.
And His Spirit continues to dwell on earth in the hearts and souls of those who love and follow Him.

And yet the world continues to search for Him among the dead.
Why is that?

I believe that part of the reason is because-
- we as believers do not show the world the living Christ through our actions.

We talk a lot about who Jesus is and that He’s the Son of God-
- but so many times our actions fail to match His message!

It is our responsibility to show Christ to the world through our everyday lives.
It is only by loving your neighbor as yourself that you can influence the world’s view of who Christ is.

And when we fail to do this, we reinforce the position that-
Jesus was simply a great teacher who died and was buried.

But you know there’s more to the story.
You and I both know that everything we do either confirms to the world that Jesus is dead, or that He has risen.

As we celebrate Easter-
- let’s consider how we present Jesus to the world.

Ask Christ to show those around you His love through your actions.

Thinking of the Cross
My Manna

"He will cover you with his feathers, and under
his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart." Psalm 91:4.

Sundar Singh, an Indian evangelist-
- wrote about a treacherous forest fire,
- that swept through the Himalayas where he was travelling.

Many men were trying their best to fight the fire-
- but there was one group that stood staring up at the flaming branches of one tree.

They watched as a mother bird flew frantically in circles above the treetop.

She was chirping an alarm and warning to her nest full of babies.

As the flames reached her nest and it began to burn-
- she didn't fly away.

Instead she swooped down and covered her fledglings with her wings to protect them.

However, in a matter of seconds she and her nestlings were consumed by the fire.

The men standing below were awe-stricken.

Singh then used the opportunity to share with them:

"We have witnessed a truly marvelous thing.
God created that bird with such love and devotion that she gave her life trying to protect her young. ...
That is the love that brought Him down from heaven to become man.
That is the love that made Him suffer a painful death for our sake."

What a stirring, vivid portrayal of Christ's love for us.

How often have you stood in awe and amazement as you think of the cross where Jesus gave His life for you?
Where the fire of holy judgment burned down upon Him?

It was on Calvary that-
Jesus willingly suffered,
- gave His life for us, and
- "bore our sins in his body on the tree,
- so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness..."
1 Peter 2:24.

And it is "by his wounds you have been healed."
1 Peter 2:24.

Thank Jesus-
- for dying in your place,
- and forgiving you of your sins.

Show Him every day how grateful you are-
- for what He did on the cross by living for him.

"So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord- the King of Israel!'" John 12:13.

Palm Sunday is celebrated in different ways.

At one church the people meet in a room beneath the sanctuary.

When everyone is ready they emerge through a side door to process around the outside of the church.

Joining in the procession are people waving palm leaves, others playing musical instruments, including the bagpipes, others shouting and singing, "Hosanna."

Hosanna means "Save Now"!

Palm Sunday is a day of rejoicing, for the King is coming!

There's a story about a pastor and seminary professor, Dr. Walter Bruggemann, that goes like this:

He and the rest of the Palm Sunday procession were outside when a young man living in the apartment house across the street threw up the window and shouted, "What's all that noise? You sound like the Salvation Army!"

Dr. Bruggemann looked up at him and said, "Son, we are the salvation army!"

What better way to sum up the events of the first Palm Sunday than to call it a salvation army parade?

The time has come.
The day of salvation is at hand.

"I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin." John 8:34.

We
have an ongoing struggle with sin!

Sin has a way of multiplying and
reviving itself-
- and launching a new and an unexpected assault on our
most vulnerable areas.

The Bible paints a very graphic picture of a
person-
- who becomes entrapped by his own sin.
It says, "And he will be
held with cords of his sin."

Now what does that mean?

Have you ever seen a little bug caught in a spider's web?

The more that
bug struggles to become free-
- the more entangled in the web it becomes.

That's what this verse is talking about.

The person is trapped by his
sin, and even when he comes to his senses and recognizes the need to
change, he cannot escape by his own strength.

He just gets more tangled.

But there's hope for the person caught in his sin.
We can all be free
from bondage by admitting our sin to God and giving Him control of our
life through Jesus Christ.

Only He can untangle us-
- from the tangled web
of sin that we weave!

"For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways." Psalm 91:11.

We don't know-
- how many times angels have been working behind
the scenes in our lives,
- how many times they have delivered us, or
- how
many times they have intervened on our behalf.

But we do know that God
has given us a wonderful promise:
- that He will send His angels to
protect us and keep us.

However, there is a condition to God's promise that His
angels will be actively involved in the lives of His children. We find
it in Psalm 91:9–11:

"Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the
Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any
plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over
you, to keep you in all your ways."

From this passage-
- we see that the condition is making the
Lord our refuge.

The phrase, "dwelling place," in verse 9 gives the
idea of-
- permanence of position, of settling down to stay somewhere.

So our goal should be to maintain a close relationship and
fellowship with God, to abide with Him.

His promise to us is that His
angels will protect us.
He will be there for us.
He will be actively
involved in our lives.
He will keep us in all our ways.

"Is not My word like a fire?" says the Lord, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?"
Jeremiah 23:29.

Billy Graham once said-
"Time
and time again in my ministry, I have quoted a Bible verse in a sermon,
sometimes without planning to do so in advance, only to have someone
tell me afterward it was that verse which the Holy Spirit used to bring
conviction of faith to him."

Knowing God's Word is essential-
- for any person who wants to lead others to Jesus Christ.

Anyone who shares the gospel needs to use the Word of God.

When
Philip met the Ethiopian in the desert, the Bible tells us, "Then
Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus
to him."
Acts 8:35.

What if Philip had not been a student of Scripture when the Ethiopian was looking for answers?

He would have had to say, "I don't know...that's a good question. Uh, can I get back to you?"

Philip was well-versed in what the Scripture taught.

That
is why we are told in 2 Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself
approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth."

I am not saying we need to have the answer to every question.

But I am saying that we need to study and prepare ourselves as effectively as possible.

And if we don't have the answer-
- let that propel us back into the pages of Scripture to find it for the next time that question arises.

"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21.

A man's 13-year-old grandson had just made the seventh-grade basketball team.

After the first week of practice, the grandfather asked him-
"So how is the team? Do you like playing?"

The
boy replied, "We haven't really started playing yet. So far we've just
been dribbling the ball, listening to loud music, and the coach yells at
us a lot."

The grandfather was a little puzzled, but figured the boy probably left out a few details.

So, he checked back the next week-
"Well, how's it going now? Is the coach still yelling?"

"Yup,"
the young man replied. "Now we're passing and dribbling the ball and
running the length of the court. And the coach is still playing loud
music, and he's still yelling."

The grandfather was completely baffled. "Does he yell at everyone or just some of the guys?"

The grandson replied, "He yells at each of us."

The next day the grandfather dropped by practice to see for himself the kind of basketball team the coach was creating.

He introduced himself to the coach and asked if he would explain today's training to him.

The
coach was happy to explain,
"To be able to coach the guys during a game, I need them to be able to
recognize my voice and to focus regardless of everything else going on
around them."

We each need to train our ears to hear God's voice above everything else going on around us.

In the middle of noisy trials and happy celebrations-
- can you hear His voice above the others?

Ask the Lord to help you to become so familiar with His voice-- that you can recognize it above every circumstance of life.

"For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and
miracles to deceive the elect-if that were possible. So be on your
guard; I have told you everything ahead of time." Mark 13:22-23.

In the November 1987 issue of Reader's Digest, Betty Wein retold an old tale.

"A just man comes to Sodom hoping to save the city. He pickets. What else
can he do? He goes from street to street, from marketplace
to marketplace, shouting, 'Men and women, repent. What you are doing is
wrong. It will kill you; it will destroy you!'

"They laugh, but he goes on shouting, until one day, a child stops him. 'Poor stranger, don't you see it's useless?'

"'Yes,' the just man replies.

"'Then why do you go on?' the child asks.

"'I was convinced that I would change them. Now I go on shouting because I don't want them to change me.' "

To the church at Corinth-
Paul said, "You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were
influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I tell you that no
one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, 'Jesus be cursed,' and no one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:2- 3.

Even as Christians-
- we can easily be led astray to idols and gods of our culture by the influence of others if we're not careful.

Jesus even warned-
"For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and
miracles to deceive the elect-if that were possible. So be on your
guard; I have told you everything ahead of time." Mark 13:22-23.

It's just as easy to compromise our faith, even a little, as it is to be
influenced.
Always guard your heart and mind with the truth of God's Word.

Ask God to guard your heart and mind against evil influences.

"Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." 1 John 4:1.

How can we be sure when and if God is speaking to us?

When I was a young Christian-
I wanted to serve God and sometimes felt he was telling me to do something.

However, this "still small voice" within sometimes had me very confused and in bondage.

In time I came to see that this "voice in my head" was not from God at all because-
- "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom,"
2
Corinthians 3:17.

And I had no freedom.

One's inner "voice" may come from God's Spirit-
- or it can come from ourselves (our own compulsions),

- or from the devil.

If the tempter knows he can't pull us down into acting out in destructive sinful behaviours-
- he may try to "push us over the top" where we become "so heavenly minded we are no earthly use."

To know where one's "inner voice" is from-
- we need to learn how to discern between a conviction and a compulsion,

- or recognize if the "voice" is from the devil.

Some people try to justify what they want to do by claiming God told or led them to do it.

Or
they don't do what they don't want to do because God didn't tell them
to do it,even though it is a clear directive of God's Word.

No wonder that the Apostle John advised in the Bible:
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God."

First and foremost, God speaks to us through his Word, the Bible, and never in any way contrary to it.

He also speaks or leads through various circumstances, as well as through inner convictions.

If it is from God-
- it will be in harmony with his Word and there will
be a sense of freedom.

If it is contrary to God's Word or any type of compulsion-
- we can know it isn't God speaking to us and we need to reject it.

"Dear
God, please give me a spirit of discernment so that I will always
recognize when you are leading me, or if I am being driven by a
compulsion from within myself or from without by the tempter. Thank you
for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, Amen."

Human life is full of trouble-
- which doesn't come from the dust, said Job's friend Eliphaz,
- nor does it sprout from the ground.

Man is born to trouble.

Compare your list of troubles with one famous man's:

He had a difficult childhood
Less than one year of formal schooling
Failed in business at age 31
Defeated for legislature at 32
Failed again in business at 33
Elected to the legislature at 34
His fiancee died when he was 35
Defeated for speaker at 38
Defeated for electorate at 40
At 42 married a woman who became a burden, not a help
Only one of four sons lived past age 18
Defeated for congress at 43
Defeated for congress at 48
Defeated for senate at 55
Defeated for vice president at 56
Defeated for senate at 58
Finally elected president.

He was Abraham Lincoln, of course!

When I look at his list of setbacks-
I wonder if I've ever had a problem!

Is my response to failure instantly to lay the blame on somebody else?
Is there always an excuse, a complaint, an inner whine!

Corrie ten Boom was "born to trouble" like the rest of us.

But in a German concentration camp she jumped to her feet every morning and exuberantly sang:
"Stand up, Stand up for Jesus!"

She thanked the Lord for the little parade of ants that marched through her cell, bringing her company.

When Paul and Silas were in prison-
- they prayed and sang.

It isn't troubles that make saints-
- but their response to troubles!

"The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to
kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."John 10:10.

Have you ever heard about how the Eskimos kill wolves?

First the Eskimo coats the blade of his knife with animal blood and allows it to freeze.

He then adds and freezes more layers of blood, several coats, in fact, until the blade is completely covered with frozen blood.

Next, he plants his knife in the snow, the blade facing up and goes about his business.

When a wolf finds his way to the luring aroma of fresh blood, he starts licking.
Then more and more vigorously, lapping it until the sharp blade of the knife is exposed.

However, by this point, so intense is his craving for the
scrumptious blood, that the wolf does not notice the sharp sting of the
blade on his own tongue, nor does he even realize that his ravenous
craving is now being satisfied by his very own blood!

By light of dawn, the Eskimo will find him laying dead in the snow.

Sin entices and seduces us in precisely the same way.

Satan lures us to the place where he plans to ravage us with some
sort of destructive fleshly pleasure- gossip, rage, sexual sin, etc.

Once we give in to it's lustful pleasures, our craving for it increases.

When we continue to allow ourselves to indulge, it grips us all the more.

And before we know it, it completely consumes us.

Our friendships are damaged.
Our marriages are broken.
Our testimony is spoiled.

Beware of the blade!
Satan comes only to rob, kill and destroy.

Let's begin recognizing our enemy's tactics upon us!
There is no more time to give in to his destructive ways!

We must strive to walk in holiness and righteousness for the glory of God's Kingdom!

The newspaper reminds us of the uncertainty of life.

Things happen that are unexpected, tides turn, fortunes shift, lives end.

One of the basic needs of humans is a sense of security!
Yet, the events of the day remind us of the insecurity that comes from the uncertainties of life.

We just don't know what's next.

While most people look for security in something-
- the Christian finds it in the Sovereign!
In the Bible we find reasons to feel secure!
Simple but strong answers are found in Romans 8:31-36.

We are secure knowing that:
• His purpose will not be frustrated.
Since God is for us, none can be against us Romans 8:31.

• His generosity will not be quenched.
Since He has not spared His Son, God will withhold nothing in taking care of us.V.32.

• His forgiveness will not be canceled.
No prosecution can succeed, since God our judge has already justified us.Vs. 33–34.

• His love will not be severed.
God has revealed it in Christ, and nothing, even the ten powerful items listed here, will separate us from Christ's
love.Vs.35–36.

Nothing can frustrate God's purpose.
Nothing can quench His generosity.
Nothing can cancel His forgiveness.
Nothing can sever His love from us.

None of these nor all of them heaped together can budge the fact that you are-
-dearly loved,
-definitely forgiven and
-divinely secure in the Lord Jesus Christ.

God holds us in the palm of His steady hand.

My Manna

Christians can become so addicted to money and to achieving a higher
level of living-
- that they lose all perspective and forget what they are
really here on earth to accomplish.

Those who live only for the pleasures of the moment stand under the
condemnation of Paul's words of 1 Timothy 5:6:

"She that lives in
pleasure is dead while she lives."

Many Christians and preachers have had the vitality taken from their spiritual life
because of their great concern for the things of the world.

Their lives do not reflect the glorious difference that
Christ can make when a believer focuses his attention on eternal values
instead of temporal ones.

An important question that every family needs to face is-
- How much money do we need in order to live in the comfort we prescribe for ourselves?

We also need to ask-
- Have we set our standard of comfort too high?

Regrettably, many people have set their standard so high-
- that they have
to spend so much time obtaining an income for that level of life that
they really have no time to live.

How sad to spend so much time-
- earning a living that you do not have time
to enjoy the living!

I am not referring to those who must work long
hours just to keep the family fed and clothed.

I am referring to those
who have become so addicted to the luxuries of life that they think the
luxuries are essential.

Such an attitude greatly affects our spiritual priorities!
Spiritual
things are bound to suffer and to take second place to the things of the world.

It is important then that-
- we do some clear thinking about our attitude
toward what this world has to offer.

Although some have the attitude
that money is the answer to everything-
- James 5:1-6 reveals that this
belief is certainly not true.
