Herb Of The Week / Aromatherapy / Insomnia / Lavender


I hope and pray that everyone will be blessed physically with
radiantly good health and a full pocketbook or wallet with change to
spare for the upcoming week. I also pray that you will be blessed
spiritually with an increased understanding of those things essential
for your well-being.


With 52 weeks in a year I feel compelled to post about the same herbs
again, especially since about 25 commonly-used, well-documented herbs
that we should hear more about. And then some issues such as cold and
flu and allergies are seasonal. And finally, there are always new
members.

On the other hand, I try to refrain from repeats because there is so
much to learn!! There are considerably more than just 52 topics
corresponding with the 52 weeks per year.


So... if you see the same one over again, it is because I personally
thought it was important.


This next few of weeks, I'll cover a different area of alternative
medicine called aromatherapy beginning with an essential oil we call
Lavender. But first, a little bit about essential oils.



ESSENTIAL OIL DETAILS:
Essential oil from plants, herbs and flowers is a precious substance.
As an example, it takes about 440 pounds of fresh lavender flowers to
produce 2 1/2 pounds of lavender essential oil. A single drop of
essential oil can be equal to one ounce of the plant .. a little goes
a long way. As such, essential oils are very POWERFUL. For instance
one drop of oil from the tobacco plant would be disastrous.

WARNINGS:
Essential oils are for external use only.
Do not ingest!
Never use near eyes!
Store blends out of reach of children!
For children under 6: cut amounts in half.
Test on skin for sensitivity.


As you might expect, essential oils are not usually sold by the pints.
1 oz of an essential can easily cost up to $10 or more.

But on with our first essential oil; Lavender (Lavandula officinalis)


'Tis the season. It is that depressing time of year again, the end of
the year when we tally up everything; the broken promises, the unkept
resolutions, our failures and the memories of the ones that are not
with us for the holidays. For some of us its Seasonal Affective
Disorder (SAD) affects twice as many females as males.
For others it's a daily reality of struggling against major
depression, anxiety or bipolar disorders.


Aromatherapy can help you beat those `winter blues'. A growing body of
scientific research supports the fact scent has a profound effect on
the emotions. The limbic system processes both odor and emotions,
therefore, aroma and emotions are inseparable. Essential oils can
cleanse, release, and balance our thoughts and emotions. Aromatherapy
affects the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our
individuality.


And even though political correctness asserts that we are all the
same, women react more strongly to aromatherapy, hence emotional
concerns. (Thank God, for Mama!!)

But back to Lavender... a wonderful oil for depression. It has a
steadying influence on the psyche. Lavender's balancing effect calms
uncontrolled emotions, removes indecisiveness and emotional conflict,
and helps to bring the feelings under conscious control. It brings a
sense of rationality to the conscious mind.



WHEN SLEEP IS THE ISSUE, Lavender Oil works to calm a variety of
nervous disorders including excitability, nervous tension, panic, and
hysteria. It emanates a mellow peacefulness and induces sleep.


(((Lavender oil is distilled from the flowering tops of the plant and
is usually imported from France and is one of the safest and most
widely used oils in aromatherapy)))


Simply inhaling Lavender Oil releases various neurochemicals in the
brain and you will experience a physiological change in body, mind,
and spirit. When Lavender is inhaled, serotonin is released from the
raphe nucleus of the brain, producing a calming influence in the body.


Lavender is one of the few essential oils that can safely be applied
directly to the skin, undiluted (neat). Wear a few drops of Essential
Oil of Lavender in this way as a body perfume oil. For a massage oil,
mix 5 drops Lavender Oil to ¼ oz. carrier oil (olive, sesame, jojoba,
sweet almond). Lavender Essential Oil can be placed directly into the
bath (3 - 5 drops), mixed with sea or Epsom salts (5 drops to 1 oz.),
or used in Shower Gel or soaps.

BUT....

You can also use Lavender Incense around your home. Place Lavender
candles in every room. Lavender Sachets can be placed in drawers,
closets, etc… Essential Oil of Lavender can be used in Light Rings,
Diffusers, Aroma Lamps, or Potpourri throughout the home or office.
Other ways to strategically incorporate the scent of Lavender into
your home include: Put a couple of drops of oil onto a cotton ball and
place in your vacuum cleaner bag, place a couple of drops of oil onto
a cotton ball and swab the light bulbs in your home or office,
sprinkle a couple of drops of Lavender oil onto your pillows.

information as in depth as we desire in our own free time. As we
mention all the time, with every post, that you can research anything
mentioned in this newsletter on your own. Some good search engines are

www.askjeeves.com ...etc. By entering one or more keywords you can do
your own research.


Until next time remember .... most illness (upwards of 80% according
to experts) can be attributed to FOUR important factors that can
weaken your immune system and your ability to fight off disease:


1. Anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, guilt and other STRESS
factors
2. Improper and/or inadequate NUTRITION habits
3. A sedentary lifestyle that does not include enough EXERCISE
4. Not enough rest and quality SLEEP time

The United States Surgeon General warned Americans in a landmark 1988
report on Nutrition and Health that "diet related diseases account for
68% of U.S. deaths"
