Hello Elaine,

This week's online Bible study is happening Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S.

After we have given thanks and enjoyed time with our families, we'll return to consider the questions we began considering last week:

"Did Jesus fulfill the Law?"

"Do we have to fulfill it?"

Last week we saw how Jesus was constantly accused of "destroying" the Law and the Temple, disobeying Moses, disregarding the traditions of the elders - and exposing the hypocrisy of the religious elite.

In the Sermon on the Mount, He clarified that He did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it.

But here comes the twist...

The ones screaming and hollering the most about keeping the Law weren't even keeping it themselves.

So Jesus says your righteousness has to EXCEED that sort of hypocritical legalism and slavish obedience to the Law if you want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

He then gives several examples to show that, far from destroying the Law, He is going beyond the bare minimum that the Law commanded, dealing very frankly with matters of the heart - anger, lust, self-centeredness, pride, vengeance, and hate.

After setting an impossible standard for righteousness that exceeds the Law, He reveals the secret of how to fulfill it by surpassing it.

Did you catch that secret?

If you didn't, have no fear... We'll discuss these things in this week's online Bible study (FRIDAY):

LAW VS. GRACE (Part 4)

Put Ye On the Lord Jesus
by Chip Brogden
“But put ye on the Lord Jesus, and make

no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts."

-Romans 13:14

It is interesting that Paul would say, “Put ye on the Lord Jesus.” What exactly does that mean? How do we put on the Lord Jesus?

If we are looking for a method, or a technique, then we are apt to be disappointed, for neither the Lord nor the apostle Paul gives us such a method. The method is Christ: He is Way, He is Method, He is Technique. We are not given a three-point sermon for how to put on the Lord Jesus; yet we are told this is the key to making no provision for the flesh. This much is clear, however: victory is bound up in Christ, and not in ourselves...

Hello Elaine,
As we consider Law vs. Grace in the New Testament, along comes a common objection:

"Jesus said He did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it. Therefore, the Law is still valid for us today."

This is where I patiently remind people that there are three steps to understanding the Bible:

1) Translation: What does it say?

2) Interpretation: What does it mean?

3) Application: How does it apply?

In this case, what Jesus says in Matthew 5:17 is: "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."

I have no issue with what it says; but what does it mean, and how does it apply?

This is where people get lost in the weeds and make a lot of erroneous assumptions.

To understand what this means and how it applies, we need to read everything that comes before and after this statement and ask some additional questions to help us get at the correct interpretation and application.

Has Jesus fulfilled the Law?

If so, how?

If not, when?

What did Jesus mean by "fulfilling" the Law?

Which Law was He referring to?

To whom was the Law given in the first place?

Who is He talking to here?

How could we fulfill the Law today without compromising Grace?

A more advanced question is...

If Jesus fulfilled the Law, why are we still trying to fulfill it?

We'll try to answer these questions (and more) in this week's online Bible study:

A Religion of Fear
by Chip Brogden
Everything Religion touches produces fear. The fear touches everything.

It touches your finances. I had a couple who came up to me while the Church was kicking me out, and they said, “We don’t agree with what’s going on here, but we have to keep paying our tithes because we don’t want our finances to be cursed.” What do you say to something like that? What amazing ignorance – that you would actually give money to something you don’t support because you’re afraid to stop tithing.

Where does that fear come from? Doesn’t come from God. It comes from a Church-Centered Faith, which is really just a Self-Centered Faith. We’re going to do what is in our own best interest, and we believe it is in our best interest to keep tithing because we’re afraid of what might happen if we don’t. That’s a Self-Centered Faith. That’s a Church-Centered Faith. It’s not a Christ-centered faith based on love. The Bible says, “Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment. He that fears is not made perfect in love...”

Hello Elaine,
When you have the "residue of religion" still clinging to you like stink in a landfill, you sometimes revert back to Law without realizing it, and this hinders your growth in Grace.

The Risks of approaching God through Law are many, but they all lead to being cut off from Christ and falling from Grace.

Join us for tonight's online Bible study to learn how to prevent this.

Hello Elaine,

“The Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" Jn. 1:17.

Praise God!

The difference between these two is the difference between...

Law and Grace...

Legalism and Love...

Fear and Freedom...

Misery and Mercy...

Hypocrisy and Holiness...

Religion and Relationship.

As I say... you can have either one you want, but you cannot have both.

The Risks of approaching God through Law are many, but they all lead to being cut off from Christ and falling from Grace.

The Rewards of approaching God through the Grace and Truth of Christ are also many, and this Grace is something we have to grow into because it sounds too good to be true.

We'll explore some more differences between Law and Grace, and all the Risks and Rewards, in this week's online Bible study:

A Warning to the Lukewarm
by Chip Brogden
Our heart’s desire is to see God’s people delivered from anything that keeps them in bondage, anything that hinders them from spiritual maturity, and anything that distracts them from the simplicity of Christ.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll be very clear in saying it again: that in my opinion, Organized Religion is the greatest hindrance to a real relationship with Jesus that I know of.
Now, since I believe that “Church” is the greatest hindrance to spiritual growth and maturity, naturally I’m going to encourage God’s people to think seriously about where they go, and what they support, and why; and I’m going to challenge this religious system that we have created. If I didn’t speak out against it, and challenge it, and question it (while all the while I believed it was hurting more people than it helped) then I wouldn’t be honest. The reason we speak these things is because of our love and concern for God’s people. And it’s that love and concern that motivates us to speak out against abusive leadership, and abusive groups, and abusive pastors and prophets, and the entire religious system that keeps God’s people in a kind of spiritual ghetto – keeping them down, holding them back, or worse, lulling them into a false sense of security and fellowship that is based on something other than the Lord Jesus Christ...

Hello Elaine,

Last week we discussed how Scripture highlights the many differences between Law and Grace.

The most important difference is that "the Law came through Moses..."

And, back in the day, there were many disciples of Moses running around, proclaiming LAW LAW LAW and putting people under bondage.

Into this religious atmosphere God sent His Son with a very different approach:

"But grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (Jn. 1:17).

LAW attacked Grace and Truth relentlessly.

Jesus and His disciples were criticized for failing to keep the Law.

In some cases, that criticism was 100% accurate.

For example, the Law commanded that those who commit adultery must be stoned.

Jesus, fully aware of what the Law commanded, said, "I do not condemn you. Go, and sin no more."

How could He do that?

Because Jesus is not submitted to Moses.

Jesus is preeminent over Moses.

Meaning, Grace and Truth overrule Law every time.

And what Jesus says is more important than what Moses (or anyone else) says.

In fact MOSES HIMSELF agrees with that statement, and would rebuke his followers for their religious submission to the Law after Christ has come in the fullness of Grace and Truth.

If you're conflicted over OT vs. NT, Law vs. Grace, "should or should not," then that point is worth remembering.

It really comes down to this:

Are you a disciple of Moses, or a disciple of Jesus?

You can follow Law or Grace, but you cannot follow both.

And, there are risks and rewards associated with both.

Join us for this week's online Bible study as we explore...

Bring Them to Christ
by Chip Brogden
I am amazed and saddened at the number of Christians who have no goal, no purpose, no vision which consumes them, no motivation other than to just make it to the next church service.

We ought to grieve and weep over this. Sometimes I would like to just go to these precious believers, take them by the shoulders, and give them a good shaking! Wake up, you sleeping ones, and Christ will give you light! Rise up and fulfill your destiny! There is a goal, and Paul called it “the prize of the high calling of God in Christ.” Christian brother and sister, you are meant for more than mere survival...

The Need for Brokenness
by Chip Brogden
Christians today are encouraged to seek more power, more anointing, and more gifts. I have stood before these precious believers and led them in the singing of choruses which cry, “More love, more power, more of You in my life.”

To be sure such a desire is good and sincere. The Church is so hungry for the presence of the Lord. I have watched thousands stream forward in hopes of obtaining some fresh outpouring of spiritual power or anointing. I have both led them in the pursuit of more power and joined them in the pursuit. Day and night I searched for spiritual power that I might overcome my sins, be a witness for the Lord, and have a powerful ministry which reached thousands.

But a day came when the Lord gave me revelation of Christ in me, and I in Christ. May I say, that day was like walking out of one room, entering another, and closing the door behind me. From that day forward I realized that I was complete in Christ, filled with all that God has, all that He IS.

From that day forward I saw that the problem is not in obtaining more from the Lord, but in allowing Him to break me and humble me that I may no more hinder Him through my own foolishness, pride, natural wisdom, fleshly lusts, and divided heart. I needed to decrease, and He would increase in direct proportion to my decrease. If I decrease but a little, He would increase but a little. But with much decrease of me there would be much increase of Him. With less of me, there WOULD BE more of Him in my life...

Chip Brogden CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS - Page 9 Empty Re: Chip Brogden CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS

Post  Admin Wed 19 Oct 2022, 9:06 pm

Hello Elaine,

I am finally able to update you on our family situation – and (if you are willing to hear it) share some of the lessons learned during this experience that may help you with whatever difficulties you may be experiencing right now.

First I’d like to say again how much we appreciate your prayers and encouragement during these very difficult three months.

For those who are unaware, I informed our mailing list a few months ago that my daughter had become a victim of domestic violence; and that, as soon as I became aware of it, I did what any father would do - I immediately got her and our grandson out of that situation and brought them home with me to a safe place.

Since this occurred across state lines, it triggered a number of complex legal and custody issues in two states that are still being untangled. I can’t speak about those ongoing legal issues, but the important thing for you to know is that the Lord has intervened and provided us with an interim resolution to that situation, for which we are very thankful.

Previously, I had said that things were bad and would probably get worse. I was correct, and things got so bad that at one point we thought we would lose everything we had been fighting for – not for any lack of facts, evidence, and truth, but simply a lack of competent legal representation.

All of that has since been corrected, and today we are thankful to the Lord and to you for your prayers and intercessions that have brought us to a favorable outcome that we can live with - for now.

Now, on to some lessons learned.

When I first shared our family situation, so many of you responded and we are grateful for that. What really surprised me was how many people wrote in to say that they, too, had experienced domestic violence, either personally or within their family, or knew someone who had experienced it.

To those we say: We see you, we hear you, and we can relate to you in ways that we could not before.

In fact, this experience has given me new empathy for people and families and the unique struggles we all have. The person you meet on the street, the child you see on the playground, the stranger you pass in the store… You have no idea what they have been through, what they are experiencing, and what sort of personal hell they are heading for when they return home.

For me, it means giving people more grace. Having a little more patience. Being a little more understanding. Not that I have been transformed into this perfect picture of sainthood, but I am better than I used to be.

Another benefit of this transformation is a new perspective on what’s important. Things that used to bother me, things that used to upset me, things that used to worry me, are now so insignificant in comparison that it is almost laughable to consider them now. What is important is my relationships: with God, with my wife, with my children and grandchildren. And with you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, to whom I am called as a steward of the mysteries of God.

I am all the more grateful because I am aware of how close things came to going in the opposite direction from everything we have been working and praying for. I truly believe that evil is inherently self-destructive and eventually collapses upon itself like a black hole – if you can survive the damage it manages to create in the interim and avoid being sucked into that black hole.

The toll on our family has been severe. Our faith has been tested. Our souls have been shattered. Our bodies have been weakened. Yes, there is a very real connection of spirit, soul, and body. I recall how Jesus Himself was in such agony and sorrow of spirit when He prayed in Gethsemane. In the course of this battle I lost 30 pounds. My blood pressure soared to 180 over 100, and I am now being treated for hypertension. As I say: Evil is inherently self-destructive if you can survive it long enough to see it defeated.

And when things were at their lowest point, I had to explain something to my family – and, since you are also part of our family in the Lord, I will share the same thing with you.

It is this:

Our faith is not based on God giving us the outcome we want; our faith is based on Who God is. We do not stop praying and trusting even if we do not get the outcome we are praying for. Even if we cannot understand why, even if it makes no sense, even if it feels like God has forsaken us, He said He will never leave us and will never forsake us. We will not stop believing that. Our faith is not about eliminating our problems, but about His presence with us in the midst of our problems.

I would like to say that such a declaration of faith produced an immediate feeling of peace and assurance that “everything would be OK!” – but that did not happen. We had no help from our feelings. But we discovered (I believe) faith that transcends feelings, faith deeper than feelings, faith in a completely separate dimension from feelings.

In fact, I stopped trying to reconcile my feelings with my faith, no more than I would try to reconcile hot water and cold water. Faith is one thing, feelings are another, and how I feel has nothing to do with what I believe.

As I explored this in prayer I realized that faith is not about being “sure” of anything; rather, it is about trusting God when you can be sure of nothing! It is perfectly expressed in the words of a frustrated father who came to Jesus seeking deliverance for his son: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” The unbelief may always be there. The doubt may never completely go away. But it is in this very atmosphere of doubt and unbelief that Jesus invites us to trust Him.

Jesus did not require superhuman faith from people in order to help them; He only encouraged people in need to trust Him to the extent that they were able to do so, even when they were plagued by extraordinary doubts and fears. Perhaps this best explains what He meant by “faith like a mustard seed.” It isn’t “big faith” that moves mountains, but any expression of trust - however small or feeble - becomes like a single ray of the sun penetrating the clouds and scattering so great darkness.

I think we all would prefer to avoid the clouds and storms of life. But God does not promise a life of sunny days and smooth sailing. Sometimes those storms are unavoidable and unexpected, and no one is immune. How wonderful are those times when we cry out to the Lord in the midst of the hurricane, and very often, we see Jesus rebuke the wind and say to the sea, “Peace! Be still!”

But sometimes the storm just pounds us relentlessly. There is no miraculous answer. There is no feeling of peace. Wind and wave beat upon us, and we feel like we are drowning. Perhaps a whale comes along and swallows us whole. Those are the times that our faith is tested. Those storms reveal what we are made of, exposing our strengths and our weaknesses, bringing both our spiritual gifts and our fleshly fears out into the open for everyone to see.

Whatever your storm, remember that Jesus is with you. Maybe He will calm it, or maybe He will simply wrap His arms around you and say, “Hang on tight!” In either case, you are not alone. And you will get through this.

As of now, our family is stronger for having gone through this experience – although we are still in need of repairing and restoring our souls and healing our bodies. And while the ultimate outcome is still to be determined, we are thankful to the Lord – and to you – for the love and encouragement we have received during this time.

And so I encourage you as well: Whatever your situation, whatever your difficulty, whatever your challenge, don’t give up. Go to God as you are, where you are, with all your doubts and fears and weaknesses. Allow Him to reveal Himself to you in the midst of your storm.

Please let us know how we can support you in prayer. We are in this together.

I am your brother,

Hello Elaine,

Thank you for your prayers for our family. I'm a little under the weather right now, but I expect to be better soon. :-)

Looking forward to this week's Online Bible study as we continue exploring Jesus in Genesis.

We're doing this series to show that CHRIST was in the Plan, Purpose, and Will of God “in the beginning."

It means that Christ is not an afterthought, or God's startled reaction to man's rebellion.

But God, knowing in advance that mankind would fail, provided a way of redemption.

God also provided prophetic signs, types, shadows, and illustrations of redemption from the very beginning as He steadily and progressively revealed Christ.

Yes, Jesus is all over Genesis!

Join us this week for the final message in this series...

The Hidden Wisdom
by Chip Brogden
We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,
even the hidden wisdom.
(I Corinthians 2:7a)
What does it mean when Paul says this wisdom is hidden?

It means this wisdom is not obvious. It is not readily seen. It is camouflaged in such a way that you can be looking right at it and not know it. That is why everyone looks and listens but so few people “get it”. We CAN see it, and we CAN know it, but we must seek it out, because it hides from us...

The Call of the Cross
by Chip Brogden
“And he that taketh not his cross,
and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me
(Matthew 10:38).”

Are you worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ? Hear what the Lord is saying here. “If you do not take up your Cross and follow Me, you do not deserve Me.”

It is not merely a question of are we following Christ. The crux of the matter is, have we taken up the Cross? There is an order to this call to become disciples of Jesus Christ: first, we must take up our Cross; only then may we follow after Him. It is not, “first follow Me, and later take your Cross.” The Cross is step one. Our taking up the Cross is basic to our following Christ, not something we are called to do after many years. The so-called “deeper Christian life” is but the normal Christian life. Anything less is abnormal. There is no greater depth to the Christian life but what God expects of all of us from the beginning. If we are getting any “deeper” it is only because we have hitherto been shallow. We must take our Cross and follow Jesus...

A Place for the Lord
by Chip Brogden
“Foxes have their dens, and birds have their nests; but the Son of Man has no where to lay His head (Matthew 8:20).”

How may we prepare a place for the Lord Jesus? What is He searching for? Where is the place of His rest?

Many of us have traveled “outside the camp” in search of something more in tune with God’s own heart. I believe the most important calling we have is to prepare a place for the Lord Jesus, to give Him somewhere to lay His head. We will find that the purest, simplest expression of the Church is that which satisfies the Lord’s heart and gives Him a place...

Hello Elaine,

I write again this week asking for your continued prayers regarding our family situation.

Despite my weakness, I enjoyed last week's teaching.

I'm late inviting you to this week's teaching because I wasn't sure I would be able to do it.

But thanks to your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus, I am still here and looking forward to this week's study.

We are exploring JESUS IN GENESIS.

Last week we learned that Jesus was with God, and was God, and that all things were created by Him and for Him.

Christ is no afterthought, but was IN THE BEGINNING with God.

God said, "LIGHT BE," and Light was!

That Light was Christ, shining in the darkness and overwhelming it.

As the ALPHA and the FIRST and the BEGINNING, Christ was (and is) the foundation and cornerstone of God's Purpose and Plan for mankind: "That in all, CHRIST must have preeminence."

We see all of this even in the first book of the Bible.

Please join me for this week's study to learn more...

You overhear me talking about Jesus, and you ask, “Who is Jesus?”

Without saying a word, I hand you a piece of paper containing five verses of Scripture...

Hello Elaine,

We ask for your continued intercessory prayers as our family situation continues to evolve. Last week was a mixed victory, avoiding one thing (for now) but opening up three other things. Such is man's system of justice.

I come to you this week and invite you to our online Bible study, which I am determined to lead, since I was unable to last week.

Yet I come to you, not in strength, but in weakness, trusting in the supply of the Spirit of Jesus to enable me to teach and to encourage you, even while I am fighting ever-present, ever-shifting evil that threatens my family.

Kind of like when Nehemiah was building the wall, and the laborers had to bear their load with one hand while holding a sword in the other. That's how I have felt for the last two months, and the war continues.

But what settles my mind the most is to meditate on the preeminence of Christ.

And I would like to explore one aspect of that preeminence with you by examining the very first book of the Bible, and how it reveals Christ from the beginning.

Please join me this week as we begin this new teaching series:

The 7 Essential
Teachings of Jesus
LISTEN NOW
Going back to basics, back to essentials, is a necessary and important thing to do from time to time.

I have observed the ongoing crisis of a Christ-less Christianity (or, “Churchianity”). How did the Christian religion get into this situation?

By forgetting the essentials. By focusing on things that don’t matter. By being led astray from the simplicity of Christ. By majoring in minors. By “adding to” the main thing with a 10,000 lesser things.

So it seems that going back to basics… back to essentials… is a necessary and important thing to do from time to time.

If you take away all the extra junk that religion has added to Jesus over the last 2,000+ years, what are you left with? What are the basic, essential, simple truths that are most important?

Each of these 7 Essential Teachings of Jesus can be reduced to a single word. We’ll review each of them in this series of teachings.
