(Worthy News) - Officers from the 401st Armored Brigade as well as from the Givati and Nahal infantry brigades were training when The Jerusalem Post visited IDF Training Command Headquarters at the Julis base near Ashkelon this week to watch as they virtually trained for a future war with Hezbollah.

“It’s like a videogame, but these are real places where troops and officers might go,” said Col. Eliav Elbaz, commander of the brigade’s training base.

Officers experience fighting in simulated urban terrain similar to that of Lebanon, complete with the street they might find themselves walking down and the mosque they might pass when in a village in southern Lebanon, he said. [ Source: Jerusalem Post (Read More...) ]

Faith, Freedom, and Face Masks
   Jul 23 2020
The opinion page cartoon from the U.K. was telling: a series of iconic statues from around the world, from Christ the Redeemer in Brazil to Michelangelo’s David, all wearing face masks with the caption, “We’re all in it together.”
Except for the final statue, the Statue of Liberty, which, while masked, had an American leaning out of the top of her crown shouting, “Except it imposes on my personal freedom!”
People in other countries are genuinely dumbfounded by our “mask” divide. To have something as basic as wearing a mask in the midst of a pandemic in order to control its spread become a partisan issue is confusing to many Americans as well. Why is there such a belligerent attitude toward wearing a mask in public in the name of public health?
The answer that is often given is the defense of personal freedom. Yes, it is often coupled with the distrust of government, doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and all things “deep state.” But the heart of the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter rebellion is freedom.
Might I humbly submit something to consider? What would it mean to put thinking ahead of feeling, public service before personal freedom, and Christ before ourselves? Particularly in light of three very important truths.
First, Face Masks Matter
While there may have been confusing, conflicting reports early on during the outbreak, there is now growing evidence that facemasks help reduce the transmission of droplets. As reported in the Wall Street Journal:
“Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmission—even if an infected wearer is in close contact with others. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he believes the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if ‘we could get everybody to wear a mask right now.’”
Second, Freedom Has Limits
Individual freedom ends where the safety and well-being of another begins. We think nothing of collectively restricting the freedom of someone smoking a cigarette in an enclosed public space due to the dangers of second-hand smoke. That is a clear limitation of personal freedom for the safety and health of others. Yes, you have the freedom to smoke. No, you don’t have the freedom to harm others in the process. Wearing a mask never killed anyone; not wearing one just might.
Finally, the Christian Faith Has Clear Commands Regarding Interaction With Others
This has been brought into a fresh application in the midst of a pandemic. Commands such as doing to others as we would have done to us and countless other “death to self for the sake of another’s well-being” charges. Could it be that wearing a mask in public settings where social distancing isn’t possible, or in enclosed places where the risk of spread runs higher, is simply a matter of loving our neighbor, or taking a bowl of water and a towel and washing their feet?
I don’t like wearing a mask, but when asked to do so, when it would serve others to do so, I do.
Why?
We’re in a pandemic and wearing a mask is arguably—short of a vaccine—the most important weapon we have.
We’re in a pandemic and my personal freedom ends where the needs of public health begin.
We’re in a pandemic, and it’s one of the clearest, easiest ways to show the love of Jesus to others.

Massive landslide blocks river in Hubei, prompting more than 8 000 residents to evacuate, China
A massive landslide of about 10 million cubic m (350 million cubic feet) blocked a river in central China's Hubei Province, resulting in a barrier lake that prompted authorities to evacuate more than 8 000 residents on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.
The barrier lake was formed around 21:30 UTC on July 20 (05:30 LT on July 21), when a massive chunk of earth fell on the Qingjiang River-- a tributary of Yangtze River in the Enshi Tukia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, according to the city's flood control and drought relief headquarters.
An hour later, a huge chunk of 1.5 million cubic m (53 million cubic feet) of earth slid into the river, as reported by Fu Qiang, an engineer with the Hubei Geological Bureau, at a press conference late Tuesday night.
Fu added that the landslide body is constantly changing.
On the same day, around 02:15 UTC (10:15 LT), water from the upper reach broke through the top of the lake, discharging at 200 cubic m per second (7 000 cubic feet per second), easing the risk of the dam breaking.
A total of 8 397 residents of 1 963 households from the affected areas have been evacuated as of 07:00 UTC (15:00 LT), mayor Su Yong confirmed.

Extreme, record rains lead to deadly floods and massive disruption in Sicily, Italy
Deadly flash floods caused by severe thunderstorms lashed parts of Sicily, Italy, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, resulting in massive disruption. Palermo City's astronomical observatory recorded 74 mm (3 inches) of rain in just a few hours, breaking the previous wettest July day record set 85 years ago. Palermo mayor described the downpour as the worst since 1970 -- 'equal to what the city registers in a year.'
Underpasses were submerged while streets turned into raging rivers, sweeping away many vehicles and covering them in muddy debris.
Hundreds of motorists were forced to abandon their cars as torrential rains inundated tunnels.
Two people went missing after their car was swept away by floodwaters. The pair tried to take shelter in an underpass, but the road quickly became inundated, trapping them inside. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Nine people sustained injuries and two children were treated for hypothermia.

"I'm from Palermo and truly I've never had so much anxiety in my life," one local said as she shared photos of the devastating scene, showing numerous cars stuck in floodwaters. "Whoever is from Palermo area, stay at home."
According to a statement by Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando, over 1 m (3.3 feet) of rain fell in less than two hours. "It is the most violent rain in the history of the city since 1970, equal to what we receive in a year."

While his rainfall data is exaggerated -- as Palermo has an annual rainfall average of 615 mm (24.2 inches) -- in terms of how violent the rain was, Orlando was spot on since the city records only about 5 mm (0.2 inches) of rain in the entire month of July.

The city's observatory registered 74 mm (3 inches) of rain in just a few hours, smashing the previous 24-hour July rainfall record set on July 6, 1935, with 39.2 mm (1.5 inches). Other private weather stations recorded more than 100 mm (4 inches) within a short period of time.

An explosion was heard in western Tehran on Thursday night, Reuters reported, citing the official IRIB news agency.

IRIB did not provide any additional information about the cause of the blast or possible casualties.

Electricity has been cut in the area of the explosion in suburbs west of Tehran, it reported.

There have been multiple explosions around military, nuclear and industrial facilities in the past week.

Two people were killed in an explosion at a factory in the south of Tehran on Tuesday.

Last Thursday, Iran announced that an "accident" had occurred at the Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran.

On Sunday, an unnamed Middle Eastern intelligence official with knowledge of the “accident” at Natanz told The New York Times that Israel was responsible for the attack, which he said was carried out using a powerful bomb.

Also last week, 19 people were killed in an explosion at a medical clinic in the north of Tehran, which an official said was caused by a gas leak.

On June 26, an explosion occurred east of Tehran near the Parchin military and weapons development base. In this incident, as well, authorities said the explosion was caused by a leak at a gas storage facility in an area outside the base

Trump Administration Removes Transgender Health Discrimination Protections
The US Department of Health published a new rule Friday asserting that protection against “sex discrimination” in health care applies only to people who are biologically male or female. Focussed on Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, the final rule rolls back an Obama-era regulation which had added “gender identity” as grounds under which a person could suffer health care discrimination. Religious and conservative groups have welcomed the rule as protecting freedom of conscience and allowing federally funded medical practitioners and insurance companies to refuse the provision or coverage of transgender treatments. However, human rights groups are concerned the rule will leave trans-Americans without access to standard needed health care that is unrelated to sex change.

(Worthy News) - A Wuhan laboratory is the “most likely” source of the COVID-19 outbreak now ravaging the globe, according to a U.S. government analysis that catalogs the evidence and concludes that other explanations for the origin of the coronavirus are less credible.
The document, compiled from open sources and not a finished product, says there is no smoking gun to blame the virus on either the Wuhan Institute of Virology or the Wuhan branch of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, both located in the city where the first outbreaks were reported.
But “there is circumstantial evidence to suggest such may be the case,” the paper says.
“All other possible places of the virus’s origin have been proven to be highly unlikely,” the document concludes. A copy of the report, compiled this month, was obtained by The Washington Times. (Worthy News) - The United States has circulated a draft U.N. resolution that would indefinitely extend a U.N. arms embargo on Iran set to expire in October, a move almost certain to spark opposition from Russia, which has made no secret of its desire to resume conventional weapons sales to Tehran, U.S. officials and U.N. diplomats said Tuesday.

The draft document, which as of Tuesday had been circulated only to a small number of Security Council members, would strike the expiration of the arms embargo from the council resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal between six major powers and Iran, according to Trump administration officials and U.N. diplomats, who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. officials said the aim is to present the resolution for a vote in May when Estonia, a NATO member and close U.S. ally that is not party to the nuclear deal, holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council. UK government planning to ban minors from access to gender reassignment surgery

(Worthy News) - A UK cabinet minister has said the government is planning legislation that would prohibit minors from receiving gender reassignment surgery, the Daily Telegraph reported. Equalities Minister Liz Truss was addressing a parliamentary committee last week when she stated it was important to protect minors from making such irreversible decisions.
Under the UK's Gender Recognition Act, minors diagnosed with gender dysphoria can have genital reconstructive surgery with parental approval and after a two-year waiting period. Following a two-year public consultation on gender recognition reform, Ms. Truss said the government would publish a full response to revising the current legislation this summer.

Giving evidence to the Women and Equalities Select Committee, the minister explained: “I believe strongly that adults should have the freedom to lead their lives as they see fit.” However, she added: “I think it's very important that while people are still developing their decision-making capabilities that we protect them from making those irreversible decisions.”

According to the Daily Telegraph, the government’s plans have been criticized by transgender rights charities as introducing “a new form of inequality into British medical practice.”

Ms. Truss also set out several “very important principles,” she said the government would implement with the proposed legislation, the Daily Telegraph reported. The principles included the “protection of single-sex spaces” and “maintaining the proper checks and balances” while ensuring transgender adults can live free from fear of persecution.

(Worthy News) - Protests against lengthy coronavirus-related lockdowns have spread in Europe where most people have died in the global pandemic, devastating economies and wracking lives of millions. In Germany, the continent's largest economy, police detained dozens of protesters over the weekend for violating the strict lockdown measures they were demonstrating against.

About 1,000 people turned out for the rally in Berlin, the capital, which has become a weekly event there, witnesses said. This weekend's protest attracted mainly far-left activists as well as some right-wing supporters and members of other fringe groups. Police put up barriers around Rosa Luxemburg square, where demonstrators headed, warning them the protest "is not in line with the rules."

Several activists wore T-shirts accusing Chancellor Angela Merkel of "banning life," while others called for "freedom." Others brandished placards bearing slogans such as "Stop the pharmaceutical lobby." The protest was unauthorized as a result of emergency rules in Berlin banning gatherings of more than 20 people.

But protesters called for "an end to the state of emergency" as Germany has one of the lowest death tolls for the virus. Nearly 6,000
people died in Germany of the coronavirus disease COVID-19. Anger also erupted along the Polish-German border. Polish residents who work in Germany reportedly protested against the border closure, with many chanting to let them work. Poland was one of the first European Union states to close borders due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Elsewhere in Europe, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Austria in defiance of a police ban against the gathering. Some 200 people rallied in the capital Vienna demanding an end to restrictions that have been in the alpine nation for more than a month, footage showed.

The protests followed several days of riots in Paris, France, where residents in low-income suburbs have been outraged about lockdowns and perceived heavy handiness by police. Anti-lockdown demonstrations have not become as typical in Europe as they have in the United States, where protesters rallied in several states. Governments in Europe are only slowly reopening countries as the death toll passed 116,000 deaths over the weekend. Worldwide more than 200,000 people have died of COVID-19, according to official estimates.

(Worthy News) - After the U.S. unveiled similar measures, the European Union has approved a $580 billion aid package to help limit the devastating economic consequences of coronavirus pandemic lockdowns in member states. However, beyond the immediate aid, the dispute remains over the structure - and funding – of a long-term recovery plan. It emerged this weekend that the European Commission, the EU's executive, has now been tasked to make proposals by May 6, when another video conference will be held.

Several EU member states such as Italy and Spain, two of the countries worst hit by the pandemic, demand that the next long-term EU budget starting from January 1 next year will be the cornerstone of the recovery efforts. But northern countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands oppose paying for poorer southern nations they see as financially irresponsible.

Despite the tensions, European Council President Charles Michel says he expects the package to be operational by June 1. Michel said it would help pay lost wages, keep companies afloat, and fund health care systems. "We all agreed that the health and safety of our citizens come first." He added that "We also agreed to continue to follow the situation closely in particular as we approach the holiday season-. [We agreed] to coordinate as much as possible to ensure a gradual and orderly lifting of restrictions."

At the virtual summit, the EU leaders also agreed on a recovery fund. But they declined to give a specific figure to rebuild the economies of this 27-nation bloc with 446 million inhabitants - the world's third-largest population after China and India. However, EU officials reportedly said $1.1 trillion to $1.6 trillion would be needed. That trails spending by the United States, which has 333 million people.

Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a massive $2.2 trillion stimulus package. And on Friday Trump added $484 billion for especially small businesses, to rescue an economy suffering from the coronavirus pandemic.

Fact Check: This picture of coffins has no relation to Covid-19 deaths in Italy
A picture showing a hall full of coffins has gone viral on social media with the claim that these are the coffins of Covid-19 patients who died in a single day in Italy. What is the truth behind it?

Arjun Deodia
New Delhi
March 22, 2020UPDATED: March 22, 2020 17:50 IST

The picture is indeed from Italy but it is seven years old and has nothing to do with the coronavirus outbreak.
With over 4,800 deaths, Italy has seen the highest number of casualties due to the coronavirus outbreak. And now, a picture showing a hall full of coffins has gone viral on social media with the claim that these are the coffins of Covid-19 patients who died in a single day in Italy.

The caption along with the viral photo says, "Stop making mockery of CORONAVIRUS. CORONAVIRUS is real. See what happened in Italy. All these died in one day".

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found the claim along with the viral photo to be false. The picture is indeed from Italy but it is seven years old and has nothing to do with the coronavirus outbreak.

The picture along with the misleading claim has been shared by thousands on social media (https://bit.ly/2vEUHzS).

Using Google reverse image search, we found the viral photo on Getty Images, which said these are coffins of African migrants killed in a shipwreck off Lampedusa island in Italy. The photo was taken on October 5, 2013, at Lampedusa airport.

The incident was widely reported in the media at that time. More than 350 migrants from Africa were on their way to Italy when the mishap took place.

Coronavirus scourge in Italy

A report by "Al Jazeera" says "Italy announced 793 more deaths on March 21, the second day in a row of the biggest day-to-day increase in the country's four-week epidemic, after surpassing China's death toll on Thursday".

It was also reported that the Italian army was ferrying coffins from Bergamo, its worst-hit town, to remote cremation sites because local morgues were not able to cope with the surging death toll.

Leading Christian Apologist Ravi Zacharias Reveals He Has Rare Cancer, Asks for Prayers to Reduce Pain
World-renowned Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias announced in a Facebook post Thursday that he has a malignant tumor of the sacrum, a very rare cancer called Sarcoma.
"We wanted to give you an update on my health, as we know so many of you have been praying and we are so grateful. As many of you know, I underwent surgery to repair my back 3 weeks ago today. The surgery was considered a success, and the surgeon felt it was a strong reconstruction. However, since the surgery I have faced very severe pain, so intense in the night, especially, that I have been unable to sleep," Zacharias, 73, wrote in the post.

"While we have assumed this pain was a natural consequence of the surgery, we have learned in the past week that a biopsy taken during the procedure revealed that I have a malignant tumor on my sacrum—a very rare cancer called Sarcoma. Indeed, we now know this is the cause of my extreme pain. In the past few days, we have been meeting with specialists to determine the next course of action. They will wait until I am fully healed from the back surgery, and in 4-5 weeks, will begin treatment to shrink the tumor. I will not plan to resume speaking at least until the summer," he shared. (Worthy News) - Researchers in China have found that two different types of the new coronavirus could be causing infections worldwide.

In a preliminary study published Tuesday, scientists at Peking University’s School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai found that a more aggressive type of the new coronavirus had accounted for roughly 70% of analyzed strains, while 30% had been linked to a less aggressive type.

The more aggressive type of virus was found to be prevalent in the early stages of the outbreak in Wuhan — the Chinese city where COVID-19 was first detected late last year. [ Source: CNBC (Read More...) ]

Israeli emergency services organisation Magen David Adom offered the Turkish government assistance this week after a powerful earthquake triggered a humanitarian response.

The magnitude 6.7 quake in Elazig province was felt in countries such as Georgia, Armenia and Syria. It killed at least 36 people and injured around 1,600 others, with 45 pulled alive from the rubble.

MDA director General Eli Bin extended Israeli assistance to Dr Kerem Kinik, president of the Turkish Red Crescent. “We are anxiously tracking developments,” he said on Monday.

“Our heart goes out to the Turkish people and to those who have lost loved ones. The Turkish Red Crescent is respected and highly experienced in responding to disasters.”

MDA has offered to help Turkey deal with natural disasters before, and Eli Bin said: “I am confident in the alliance that we have built and view this as an opportunity to offer assistance if necessary.”

The Turkish Red Crescent has set up a control centre in the capital Ankara and a field kitchen capable of feeding 5,000 people daily, with 2,500 shelter tents set up for families, blood supplied to hospitals and mental health teams made available.

“I view this as an opportunity for collaboration and offer all assistance towards saving lives anywhere in the world,” said Eli Ben. “This is how MDA has operated in the past and will continue to do so.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened Western powers on Wednesday while pledging that Tehran would not pursue a nuclear bomb with or without a deal in place, according to Reuters.

"Do you want to make the same mistake?" Rouhani asked, referring to President Trump withdrawing the United States from the deal and reinstating sanctions on Iran. "I am emphasizing that if the Europeans make a mistake and violate the deal, they will be responsible for the consequences of their actions." [ Source: Washington Examiner (Read More...) ]

Last decade was the most expensive for natural disasters, over $1 trillion increase, report says
Severe weather such as devastating flooding and powerful hurricanes contributed to why the last decade was the worst on record for economic losses due to natural disasters around the globe, according to a report released Wednesday.
Insurance broker Aon said in its "Weather, Climate & Catastrophe Insight: 2019 Annual Report" that the period between 2010 and 2019 marked the costliest decade on record, with economic damage reaching some $2.98 trillion, about $1.19 trillion more than the period from 2000 to 2009.
"Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the last decade of natural disasters was the emergence of previously considered 'secondary' perils – such as wildfire, flood, and drought – becoming much more costly and impactful," Steve Bowen, director and meteorologist at Aon’s impact forecasting team, said in a news release. U.S.-Russia 'engagements' underscore danger of oil mission in Syria
President Trump says he is determined to keep control of Syrian oil fields as the country’s civil war plays out, but exactly how far the U.S. military is willing to go to protect those valuable energy reserves remains a mystery and represents a key question for the administration’s broader policy in the Middle East.
The murky U.S. mission in northeastern Syria’s oil-rich region has no end date or any clear path to lasting victory, and last week’s near-clash with Russian military forces cast a fresh spotlight on the serious danger American troops face.

Regional analysts, meanwhile, say the Trump administration has made a high-risk bet in committing to protect the oil fields indefinitely and officials are likely to be disappointed if they expect any U.S. energy company to ever be interested in bringing Syrian fuel reserves to market.[ Source: Washington Times (Read More...) ]https://www.worthynews.com/46638-u-s-russia-engagements-underscore-danger-of-oil-mission-in-syria?utm_source=Worthy+Brief&utm_campaign=1387c3c8b0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_01_23_06_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_d1151ee7ea-1387c3c8b0-97563133

Presidential Adviser Jared Kushner, special representative for international negotiation Avi Berkowitz, and special envoy for Iran Brian Hook were slated to meet with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition party leader Benny Gantz.
“I hope that [US] President [Donald] Trump will bring this forward and publish the plan,” Gantz said. “Several weeks have gone past. In the Middle East, a lot of dramatic things are happening, and I expect the plan will be published.”
The Blue and White party leader who plans on trying to unseat Netanyahu for a third time on March 2 originally dismissed the idea of Trump releasing the plan before elections, but his about-face is indicative that Israeli leaders have been alerted by the US administration to its soon release.

On January 18, the official PA daily newspaper al-Hayat al-Jadida carried a report that Fatah spokesman Iyad Nasr had said the movement will defend al-Aqsa "whatever the cost."
"[Fatah] Movement spokesman Iyad Nasr noted yesterday, Friday, that this is a real war and ethnic cleansing against our Palestinian people, its land, and its holy sites," the article said. "However, [the war] will not succeed in stealing from our people its will to remain and its standing firm on its land.' Big Montana Case at Supreme Court Is All About Religious Freedom for Parents and Students
Montana was giving tax breaks to those who donated to scholarships helping Montana students attend private schools. But when it realized most of those scholarships were going to children at religious schools, Montana stopped that from happening. Parents went to court saying that was blatant discrimination. It's a case that ended up before the nation's highest court this week.
Both sides in this case – Espinoza v Montana Department of Revenue – say they have the US Constitution on their side. Those who agree with Montana's contention that it can't offer any kind of government benefit that profits religion say that's clearly a matter of separation of church and state.

"Five of the justices seemed to very clearly see the discrimination that's occurring when you take funding away from students because of their religious status," Baxter told CBN News. (Worthy News) - President Donald Trump is slated to become the first president to attend the March for Life in the nation’s capital on Friday.
Since the march began after the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in 1973, the demonstration has since become a staple in pro-life activism bringing thousands from across the country to the heart of the nation’s capital to advocate for the sanctity of life. This year will be the annual march’s 47th year.
Last year, Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise visit at the event, while Trump addressed the crowd by video. Trump also delivered a video address in 2018, and Pence became the first sitting vice president to attend the event in 2017. (Worthy News) - In what many observers see as an effort to exert substantial control over the Mediterranean in view of restoring the former glory of the Ottoman Caliphate, Turkey has begun sending Syrian mercenaries to Libya to bolster the UN-backed government there against General Khalifa Haftar and his rebels.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that 1,700 troops are being trained in Turkey and 2,400 have already arrived in the country with the goal of eventually having a Turkish-backed troop presence in Libya that is 6,000-strong.

“We will present our souls for the Ottoman Caliphate,” has become the battle cry of the Turkish-backed Syrian hired guns on the flight to Libya, according to the SOHR.

Turkish President Erdogan has numerous times called for the re-establishment of the Ottoman Empire, regarded as a Caliphate by Muslims, such as in a 2015 speech commemorating 562 years since the sacking of Constantinople.

“Conquest is Mecca, conquest is Saladin, it’s to hoist the Islamic flag over Jerusalem again; conquest is the heritage of Mehmed II and conquest means forcing Turkey back on its feet,” Erdogan said at the time.

Many have seen a maritime agreement struck between Turkey and Libya two months ago, by which the two countries intend to share control of a large swath of the Mediterranean, as well as Turkish intervention in Libya, as a series of bold moves to regain the former borders of the Ottoman Sunni Caliphate.

The Christian population in Turkey has declined from 22% to .21% since 1900, with only .008% of the population identifying as evangelical, according to Operation World.

Iranian parliamentarian offers three million dollars for Trump assassination

by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) - An Iranian lawmaker offered three million dollars to any person who assassinates US President Donald Trump Tuesday, echoing earlier calls by the regime for someone to bring them the head of Trump for eighty million dollars.

Ahmad Hamzeh of Kerman Province also told Iranian national parliament that the nation ought to utterly disband with all restraints on its nuclear policy.

"If we had nuclear weapons today, we would be protected from threats," he said. "We should put the production of long-range missiles capable of carrying unconventional warheads on our agenda. This is our natural right."

In addition to having withdrawn from the Obama-negotiated Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Iran is now threatening to bury its commitments to abide by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970.

Iran has one of the fastest-growing Christian movements in the world and is also one of the severest persecutors of Christians, the number of believers in the country having jumped from around 100,000 in 1994 to over a million, with some estimates as high as three million.

(Worthy News) - U.S. troops last weekend reportedly found themselves in a standoff with Russian forces trying to gain access to key oil fields in northeastern Syria.

The Saturday standoff — first reported by Turkish media outlets, citing unnamed local officials in the Turkey-Syria border region — seems to have ended without any shots being fired or any real risk of violence between the two sides. American military personnel reportedly stopped a Russian convoy near the town of Rmelan, and the Russian forces then apparently turned back and returned to their home base. (Worthy News) - President Vladimir Putin on Thursday fast-tracked work on constitutional changes that could keep him in power well past the end of his term in 2024 while lawmakers quickly sealed his choice for new prime minister.

Speaking to a working group created to draft constitutional changes, Putin cast his proposals as a way to strengthen parliament and to bolster democracy. Kremlin critics described the proposed changes as an attempt by Putin to secure his rule for life.

The Russian leader proposed the sweeping amendments to the country’s constitution in Wednesday’s state of the nation address. Hours later, he fired Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who had the job for eight years, and named tax chief Mikhail Mishustin to succeed him. (Worthy News) - A defiant Iranian President Hassan Rouhani boasted Thursday that there is “no limit” to his country’s level of uranium enrichment – just days after European powers raised concerns about the Islamic Republic backing away from a 2015 nuclear deal.

Rouhani’s comments follow an announcement from Iran in the wake of Gen. Qassem Soleimani’s killing that the country will no longer respect limits set on how many centrifuges it can use to enrich uranium.

“We are enriching more uranium before the deal was reached,” Rouhani said during a televised speech before the heads of banks. “Pressure has increased on Iran but we continue to progress.''

(Worthy News) - Iran accused European governments Thursday of sacrificing a troubled 2015 nuclear deal to avoid trade reprisals from US President Donald Trump, who has spent nearly two years trying to scupper the agreement.

Dozens of Christians killed in 'systematic' Muslim Fulani raids in Nigeria

(Worthy News) - A mother and six-month-old baby were among those kidnapped in Nigeria in raids by Muslim Fulani herders that began Jan. 6 and saw 35 casualties.

In addition to the slain, 58 people were kidnapped and held for a total ransom of $27,440 when hundreds of the Muslim pastoralists swept into Christian villages in Kaduna state. 8,000 others were displaced.

"These Muslim Fulani herdsmen will usually come with their cattle, forcefully take over our farms, and destroy crops ready for harvests,” local Pastor Habila Madama explained.

Luka Binniyat of the Southern Kaduna Peoples' Association said the raids were part of a concerted attempt by the predominantly Muslim ethnic group to appropriate the lands of Christians, who are typically farmers in Nigeria.

“We fear that with the unchecked boldness that these heinous crimes against humanity are spreading, there is a systematic plan to wipe out our communities and take over our lands,” he said.

Over 6,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria since 2015 through the combined efforts of Boko Haram and Muslim pastoralists, the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) estimates.

(Worthy News) - Protests in Iran continued for a third day on Monday after the regime admitted over the weekend to accidentally downing a Ukrainian passenger jet carrying 176 people, killing everyone on board.

Students chanted "clerics get lost!" outside universities in Tehran and Isfahan as riot police were deployed, President Trump congratulating demonstrators for a video in which students can be seen avoiding stepping on American and Israeli flags.

"I couldn’t care less if they negotiate. Will be totally up to them but, no nuclear weapons and 'don’t kill your protesters," Trump tweeted in English and Farsi to show solidarity with protestors.

Iran is thought to have over three million believers who operate mostly underground, since converting from Islam to Christianity carries the death penalty in the Islamic Republic.

(Worthy News) - Five hundred college students streamed into a large party venue in southern Jerusalem with a panoramic view of the Old City. They noshed on mini shwarma sandwiches and cotton candy and danced with abandon to Israeli pop music — some creating a mosh pit near the DJ’s stage at the front of the hall.

But they weren’t participating in Birthright Israel, the mega project that since it was founded in 1999 has brought upwards of 750,000 young Jews to the country. These young Americans were in Israel this month with Passages, an organization that brings practicing Christian college and graduate students from all over the United States to the Holy Land for a 10-day trip to connect with the biblical roots of their faith, and with modern Israel.

In operation since January 2016, Passages is expected to bring 10,000 students to Israel by the end of 2020. The students are accepted through a selective application process. This winter break alone, Passages brought more than 1,000 students to the Jewish state on the highly subsidized trip. [ Source: Times of Israel (Read More...) ]

(Worthy News) - The US is sending home 21 Saudi students after a shooting at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida last month, Attorney General William Barr having concluded that the pilots-in-training acted on terroristic motivations.

In addition to an affinity for jihadist speech and a glorified view of 9/11, investigators uncovered a trail of child pornography in the internet histories of 15 of the students, though Barr said it would not be grounds to prosecute them in the US.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave complete and total support for our counter-terrorism investigation, and ordered all Saudi trainees to fully cooperate,” Barr said. “This assistance was critical to helping the FBI determine whether anyone assisted the shooter in the attack.”

On Dec. 6 Mohammed Alshamrani, a 21-year-old trainee, opened fire on a classroom, killing three U.S. sailors and injuring eight others before being subdued by marines.

Saudi Arabia is the number 15 worst persecutor of Christians worldwide, according to Open Doors USA, and there are no official church buildings in the country, believers mostly finding fellowship online or not at all for fear of the "Hay'ah" or Sharia police.

(Worthy News) - A pastor in Hubei Province, China is facing up to 10 years in prison for fraud charges resulting from her refusal to comply with government regulations on religion, surpassing the sentence of persecuted house church pastor Wang Yi.

Hao Zhiwei has been operating a house church under a legal Three-Self church, but was recently asked in July to “understand, support and cooperate with the government’s administrative decisions from the perspective of ensuring the safety of the lives and property of religious people.”

For her refusal to comply, Zhiwei was charged with fraud for church tithes she received, as she is not a legally recognized pastor trained in a communist government seminary.

The Three-Self Patriotic movement is a religious umbrella organization beholden to the Chinese Communist Party that all churches in China must be registered to if they are to operate legally, putting house churches in jeopardy.

Same-sex marriage officially legal in Northern Ireland; Christian leaders express concern

(Worthy News) - Same-sex marriage is now legal in Northern Ireland, sparking concern among religious and conservative leaders in the Christian-majority country.

As of Jan. 13, same-sex couples are able to register to marry in the country, and those who are already married will have their union recognized by law, according to the BBC.

The move marks the implementation of legislation passed through Westminster last year, which legalized both abortion and gay marriage. The implementation of the legislation brings the province in line with the rest of the United Kingdom, where gay marriage has been legal since 2014. [ Source: Christian Post (Read More...) ]

breaking us news viriginia
(Worthy News) - Virginia Democratic Del. Dan Helmer filed a bill Wednesday that would give the commonwealth’s attorney general, Mark Herring, discretion over which states’ carry permits Virginia would continue to recognize.

Virginia’s current concealed carry reciprocity law recognizes every out-of-state concealed carry license, but the new proposal from Helmer could limit the number of out-of-state concealed carry permits Virginia recognizes if Herring deems their carry permit requirements insufficient.

“This is certainly more restrictive than the current process, which recognizes everyone's permit. He can start saying, well, for this reason or that reason, I'm not going to recognize their permit now,” Virginia lawyer George Lyon of Arsenal Attorneys told the Washington Examiner. 2020 will see two supermoons and a blue moon close to elections
Monday, January 13, 2020 | Tag Cloud Tags: News, Worthy News

(Worthy News) - The year 2020 will see 13 full moons, two supermoons, and a blue moon in October around the same time as the US Presidential election.
A blue moon happens once every 32 months when a full moon rises twice in the same month, and this year will occur on Halloween--less than a week from the elections on Nov. 3--following the first full moon in October on Oct. 1.

A supermoon can appear as 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal moon because of its proximity to earth, and the moon will appear in this form on March 9th and April 7th, 2020, though the next blood moon that believers are especially keen to see won't appear until May 26, 2021.

Muslim herdsmen kill a dozen more Christians in Nigeria
Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed 13 Christians in Plateau State, Nigeria on Wednesday, Jan. 8, adding to a body count that has seen scores of Christian farmers murdered by the pastoralists in the last few years.
Raiders from the predominantly Muslim ethnic group that spans West Africa forced residents to flee the Christian village of Kulben into the surrounding forests when they entered the village and began firing in all directions.
“This attack on my people by these herdsmen comes as a rude shock to us, as efforts have been made by security agencies to curtail such incessant attacks on our people,” said Bala Fwengje, a local Nigerian lawmaker.
The UK-based Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) found that over 1,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria in 2019 by the combined Islamic extremist efforts of Boko Haram, the West African ISIS, and the Muslim Fulani herder group.

Grave of martyred pastor destroyed in Iran
The grave of an Assemblies of God pastor from Mashad, Iran--the same town in which Soleimani replacement Brig. Gen. Esmail Qaani rose through the ranks--was destroyed this past December by the Iranian regime.
Hussein Soodman was the only Christian in Iran to be formally put to death for the "apostasy" of converting from Islam to Christianity when a Sharia court sentenced him in December 1990, ending his 24 years of ministry in the Islamic Republic.

Esmail Qaani, who has taken over as Quds Force commander in place of slain terrorist leader and Hezbollah architect Qassem Soleimani, was appointed deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in Mashad in 1988 and thus would have wielded a measure of authority in the decision to condemn pastor Soodman.
