"I lift up my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip — he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you — the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; 8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." (Psalm 121 NIV)
The geographical location of Israel among her surrounding countries is striking. To the North she is bounded by Lebanon and Syria; to the East Jordan. To the South Egypt and Gaza and to the West the Mediterranean sea. Adjoining these states are Iran and Iraq which are chief bellicose nations. Surrounded by hostile states, Israel shares this peculiarity with no other nation under heaven.
No other nation on earth shares this distinction of being enclosed by belligerent states. In times of crises, Israel is thus constrained to seek for help; not to the south, west, east or north; But upwards to Heaven.
Israel’s geo-political setting is analogous to the believers’ vocational reality. God deliberately places us in difficult circumstances so that we can look up to him ‘ab intra’ perpetually for reprieve. Israel did not choose her location; God did. Neither did she choose her destiny. In the same way, we can not choose or prescribe for God, the predestined experiences we must go through in our daily life. The scope, timing, and degree are God’s prerogative; an act of His Sovereign choice.
Year after year Israel’s chief concern is about security. She constantly transits from danger to danger coming from her enemies. We also have an adversary the devil -- See 1 Pet 5:8. ”We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; We are perplexed, But not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed." (2 Cor 4:8-9).
The arena of our tribulation can be the marketplace, family, neighbourhood and relationships. The challenges or problems whatever their multiplicity and intensity do not have the capacity to defeat us. This is because we have an in-built system of resilient insuperability. We get better, stronger and greater with every encounter. The troubles are meant to supremely demonstrate the resurrection life & power in every sphere of our human experiences.
“For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake so that the life of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal body.” (2 Cor 4:11). We are not expendable; far from it we are indestructible!
How would Israel have captured the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza strip, West Bank, Golan heights if she was not attacked by a coalition of enemy forces? Likewise, how can we as saints manifest the resurrection life & power of Christ Jesus if we do not go through tribulations?
The quintessential nature of the New Creature is that it is indestructible. We may not know in what form a crisis may occur to us but one thing is sure; it will come. The same enemy, the same goal but different manifestations of confrontation.
Whatever the mutation of the opposition, the outcome has been irrevocably and incontrovertibly delineated. …”you have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
We are not contending for what we don’t have but as those who already have everything in Christ Jesus, we are enforcing the post-resurrection ‘status quo’ of victory daily. Invincible and impregnable, our victory is incontestable. Consequently, we must conduct our affairs and go through life with an attitude of victory; our victory is a “fait accompli”. The believer can never be defeated. He can only be defeated by that which has already defeated God. It is ONLY after God has been defeated that the believer will EVER be Defeated.
“… I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]” John 16:33 AMP
