More Than We Can Imagine
For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:14-21, New International Version)
Did I read that correctly? "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, ..." Is it possible that God can do more than I can ask or imagine? My imagination can be pretty wild. But, God can do more that I can imagine.
Once I imagined that one day I would grow up, being working, get married, have children, and enjoy life. He has done more than I could have ever imagined. In every ministry position I have ever held, I have been blessed more that I could have asked for with friends, fulfillment in ministry, and more opportunities to see God work that I could have dream. My marriage has already lasted thirty-three years and we're still going strong. My family, both my immediate family and my extended family, have far exceeded all my expectations.
Once I imagined having a nice home in a nice neighborhood a nice car and a closet full of clothes. The house and neighborhood we live in exceeds my own design. The cars we drive are much nicer than I ever imagined. My closet is consistently full and I frequently sort through the collection and make donations to local benevolent ministries.
Once I imagined living in a country where people are accepted for who they are, not because of the money in their bank account, their name, the color of their skin. We recently witnessed the Barak Obama become the president of the United States.
Once I wondered if I'd ever preach for a church that seeks to please God, loves sinners, embraces diversity, and genuinely loves one another. I believe God is surpassing my imagination.
Now, I try to imagine what it will be like to reach the ultimate destination of being with the Lord for eternity...no more sad goodbyes, no more sadness, no more death, and no more pain. Paul tells me that God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. I try to imagine what that will be like, but I cannot.
"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine." Imagine that.
