During Passover, we’re reaching into our archives….
For those who are observing, we hope you are having a meaningful and joyous Pesach. We are not posting on days that are Yom Tov in either Israel or the Diaspora out of respect for those who are off the grid on those days. Still, we thought we would take the opportunity of the intermediate days of Passover to share with our readers—many of whom joined us after this past October 7—a few posts from “the world that was” when Israel was battling internal demons, that garnered particular attention.

Israel from the Inside was created in May 2021, when Israel was in a much smaller war with Hamas. We covered history, culture, music, art, extraordinary people—and more. Then came the Judicial Reform crisis of 2023, and from January through September, much (though certainly not all) of our focus was on that.

Then came October 7th and the world of 2023 now seems an ancient, almost “quaint” time. “All we had to worry about back then,” Israelis quip, “was democracy.”

For these three posts from our Archive we’re revisiting a few of the posts that then garnered a bit of attention. Today we return to March 2021, when Israel was in a much more contained war with Hamas.

In retrospect ….
In the post below, we shared an FB post by Assaf Sagiv, perhaps Israel’s most formidable conservative public intellectual, who wrote as follows:

I do not want to sound like a defeatist, but there is nothing more pathetic than an army that boasts about the dubious achievement of bombing a city that has no defenses. No conquest of territories, no victory in a frontal confrontation, no capture of enemy fighters - just a constant crushing from the air of a pathetic militia dug into burrows and hiding behind civilians. I hear reports of the glorious success of the destruction of a building or the elimination of the "Commander of the Islamic Jihad Northern Brigade" - as if he were at minimum Admiral Yamamoto - and I cannot help but wonder: what if God forbid we send this bloated and wasteful PR machine to a real war - For example, against Hezbollah? I have a bad feeling.

He had a bad feeling then, in 2021. Why did not enough people in the right places have enough of a “bad feeling”?

I wrote at the end of the post below,

These were two terrible weeks, and we have numerous challenges to face, more internally than externally. So we’ll get to work. But ask Israelis whether – as devastating as these weeks were – if it was all worth it, and you’ll hear: it’s the price we pay to be home.

Would Israelis still say that? I do believe that most would. But without question, it would be with a much, much deeper sigh.

We have a really fun Passover tradition in my family. It's purely silly, and as far as we know, it does not originate from an ancient ancestral book, nor has it been passed down for generations! But for as long as I can remember, my family has asked "The Four Questions," a hallmark of the Passover Seder, in as many languages as we know. Seriously. We’ve had people at our Seder table who have translated the text into every language from Spanish to French, Pig Latin, Portuguese, and sign language. I know I’m forgetting one... oh yes, the Star Trek language of Klingon. By the way, if you ever come to Israel and want to join our family Passover Seder, you’ve been warned: you might be asked to translate the Four Questions from English to an obscure foreign language (if you know one).

But what exactly are The Four Questions? These are pre-written questions that the youngest member at the Seder table traditionally asks. They serve as the introduction to the section of the Seder where the story of Passover is told. Here’s the question: why do we open up the storytelling aspect of the Seder with questions? What is the significance of asking questions, and what does the Bible say about curiosity? Those are some great questions!

I had finished cleaning up at the end of the Shabbat last night and I was resting on the couch.

At about 10:45 PM, we were notified that Iran had launched drones and missiles at us.

The news reported that it would be hours before they would hit.

What do you do when you are sitting at home and you know that in a matter of hours you and your family will be under attack?

Should I wake them? Should we wait in our safe room?

Little did I know that they were all basically awake in their rooms.

Waiting….waiting…

I was not afraid. “The guardian of Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers”

At around 1:45 AM, I heard loud booms and moments later, the siren starts wailing.

From upstairs, I hear my oldest son telling everyone to get to the safe room.

We all went quickly to the safety of the reinforced room.

Five people (one son was not with us, as he is in the IDF at the Gaza border) and a dog in a small room.

We could hear boom after boom.

Finally, we were able to leave the safe room. It was close to 2:15 AM.

The rest of the night was quiet.

Over 200 incoming drones and missiles were shot down.

The US, UK, Jordan, and other countries assisted in the defense of Israel, and we are grateful.

The question is what will happen next.

You don’t defeat your enemies by playing defense. Yet, Biden has said that the US will not support an Israeli response.

We, of course, will continue to daven (pray) and do whatever is necessary.

Will Israel Retaliate Against Iran?

President Biden, has been calling on Israel to restrain itself after being attacked by Iran and not attack back out of fear it will spiral out of control and bring the region into a war. Despite the pressure, Israel appears to be readying itself to retaliate in one form or another.

The USA does not want a regional war and seemingly “coordinated” the attack with Iran and regional players to allow Iran a face saving measure that would not escalate tensions and break out into a larger conflict. America’s only part of the bargain was not only to help Israel take out the missiles and UAVs, but to restrain Israel from retaliating. The only problem is, Iran not only sent cruise missiles and UAVs, but they sent ballistic missiles. These are game changers. Any one of them has the power to take out one city block and although none of them hit built up areas they could have.

The deal with Iran only works if the USA can restrain Israel. With the use of ballistic missiles by Iran - the Biden administration has lost its leverage on Israel. Retaliation is coming, the only question is will Israel do enough to create deterrence without triggering a wider war?

That may be an impossible task.

Massive Drone And Missile Barrage From Iran Against Israel
In the first ever direct attack by Iran against Israel, the Islamic Regime in Tehran sent hundreds of drones laden with explosives from its territory towards Israel as well as at least one hypersonic cruise missile. While many are expected be knocked down, some drones and missiles are expected to get through Israel's air defense systems.
In what is being seen as an unprecedented uptick in fighting between Iran and Israel, tonight’s direct attack by Iran and now its proxies in Yemen and Lebanon puts Israel under attack from all sides. This shifts the war between Israel and Gaza to a wider regional war with Israel expected to directly retaliate against the Iranian regime.

Along with the explosive drones sent by Tehran, there are reports of missiles being fired by Hezbollah and more drones being sent by the Houthis in Yemen. Also a cruise missile has been confirmed to be launched and seen flying over Basra Iraq towards Israel.

Many of the targets are expected to be in Israel’s North and South with the government warning citizens to stay inside if they are in the Golan, Galil, Beer Sheva, Eilat, and Dimona.

Interceptions are being reported over Jerusalem and most of Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said the following to the nation:

“Citizens of Israel, in recent years, and especially in recent weeks, Israel has been preparing for a direct attack by Iran,” he said. Our defensive systems are deployed; we are ready for any scenario, both defensively and offensively. The State of Israel is strong. The IDF is strong. The public is strong. We appreciate the US standing alongside Israel, as well as the support of Britain, France and many other countries. We have determined a clear principle: Whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and will do so level-headedly and with determination. Citizens of Israel, I know that you also are also level-headed. I call on you to follow the directives of IDF Home Front Command. Together we will stand and with G-d’s help – together we will overcome all of our enemies.”

IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari on Sunday morning noted that, “Last night, Iran initiated an attack against Israel launching over 300 threats of various types. The Iranian threat met the aerial and technological superiority of the IDF, along with a strong fighting coalition – which together intercepted the overwhelming majority of the threats. 99% of the threats launched towards Israeli territory were intercepted – a very significant strategic achievement.”

While the bulk of the defense was carried out by the IDF, the USA, France, England, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia helped.

Given the severity of the attack, there is a strong possibility of an Israeli counter attack coming shortly.

Dear Friend,

As you will be aware, last night Iran launched a direct attack against the State of Israel for the first time in the Islamic republic's history. The tyrants of Tehran fired 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles, and 120 ballistic missiles. Incredibly, 99% of the threats were intercepted by Israel's long-range Arrow air defense system and the Israeli Air Force and its allies. We are really pleased that Britain's RAF was involved directly in defending Israel last night, shooting down a number of drones and missiles, alongside the United States, France, Jordan and others.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “I can confirm that our planes did shoot down a number of Iranian attack drones. I want to pay tribute to the bravery and professionalism of our pilots flying into the face of danger to protect civilians.

“If this attack had been successful, the fallout for regional stability would be hard to overstate, and we stand by the security of Israel and the wider region, which is of course important for our security here at home.”

We have been aware over the past week of the likelihood of Iran attacking Israel in some form. When news was confirmed last night that Iran had launched drones set to reach Israel within hours, it was clear through our social media channels that Christians were moved into immediate action in interceding for Israel. Many Christians in the UK who heard the news before going to bed, prayed into the night, joining many Christians throughout the world in praying for Israel's defence. As Christians, we stand 100% with what the Bible says concerning Israel. The God of Israel does not slumber or sleep. Neither will we.

There has been worldwide condemnation of Iran. But we must not be complacent. As the war against Hamas has illustrated, it is one thing to support Israel when it is a victim of terrorism. But it also requires nations to stand consistently when Israel exercises its right to defend itself. Our prayer in the days ahead is that Britain's support for Israel will remain no less than 100%.

Israel will almost certainly respond by striking Iran - something it has not been able to do directly until now. In fact, whatever Israel might choose to do militarily, we can be certain that God will not allow the Iranian regime's actions to pass by without consequence, just like every other regime and empire that has dared poke the apple of God's eye.

Our prayer today is one of thankfulness for Israel's protection last night. In uncertain days ahead, let us not cease to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Despite the worry that the war is winding down, the IDF has invested millions of dollars in the corridor enabling the Nahal Brigade to not only be able control it, but take proactive measures in enclaves to both the North and the South.

The IDF has reported that the Nahal troops have been carrying out pinpoint raids and operations against Hamas sites in the area. The troops in recent days killed numerous gunmen in clashes and ambushes, as well as by calling in airstrikes and artillery shelling, according to the IDF.

The rumors that the war had ended have once again proven to be spin generated by Israel's hard left and their supporters in the Biden administration. The IDF launched a "targeted operation" against Hamas in the central Gaza Strip overnight, on the outskirts of Nuseirat. This is an area where IDF soldiers had yet to operate during the war.

he IDF reported that the Israeli Air Force and 215th Artillery Regiment carried out strikes against dozens of Hamas targets, including tunnel infrastructure and then the 162nd Division’s 401st Armored Brigade, Nahal Infantry Brigade, and other units moved into the area.

Despite the rumors that the IDF has pulled out of the Gaza Strip save for the Nahal Brigade (stationed in the Neitzarim corridor), Israeli forces actually still control a kilometer deep buffer zone along most of the Gaza Strip. This includes the Erez region which lies within Gaza’s northern border just south of the city of Ashkelon.

The Neitzarim corridor mentioned above is also not just a strip of land, but is a 2.5 to 3 kilometer wide corridor leading from Kibbutz Be’eri to the Mediterranean. The IDF has built bases, communication towers and other permanent defensive and offensive infrastructure. The corridor as well as the Erez area allow Israel to effectively control Northern Gaza. Mop up operations are still necessary, but Gaza City is now broken of from the rest of the Strip.

The IDF upper echelon has made tremendous mistakes in the war, but the head fake they gave the Americans and Hamas by pulling out the 98th Division from Khan Yunis appears to have succeeded in luring a number of key Hamas fighter out from their tunnels. Israel also used the “Khan Yunis Retreat” to begin their precision bombing of Rafah; something that must be done to soften up the Hamas defenses there.

The final campaign of the war appears to be moving forward. The IDF will first wear down Hamas’ defenses and then sever Rafah from the South by taking the Egyptian-Gaza border. After that they will have to smash the final battalions of Hamas while rescuing any hostages still alive.

For six months the US has asked for a day after plan. Netanyahu has balked and for good reason. In Israel’s case the military outcome of the war will organically shape the day after by breaking up the Gaza Strip into at least four enclaves. With the bolstering of the Neitzarim corridor and the full control of Gaza’s Erez region, the beginning of this plan is nw taking shape.

It didn’t take long after the IDF’s 98th Brigade was pulled from Gaza for Hamas to begin firing rockets from the Southern Gaza Strip. Israel recorded rocket launches at Gaza area communities soon after the 98th was pulled. This is the natural result of a lack of an active IDF presence in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.


More ominous however, is the uptick in Iranian sent UAVs into Eilat. Yesterday, a UAV was intercepted over the skies of Eilat while vacationers were sent inside from the beaches. Last night another UAV was again intercepted by the naval base in Eilat.

The UAVs are Iranian in origin and appear to be coming over the Jordanian border into Israel’s southern city - a development that adds Israel’s eastern border to its many front conflict with the Iranian regime. There are also reports of Iraq’s Shiite Militias crossing into Jordan’s east in preparation to not only attack Israel, but to aid in overthrowing the Hashemite monarchy in Jordan. This would complete the encirclement of Israel as Egypt would certainly back away from its strategic alliance with the West.

If all of the above is not enough, the northern front with Hezbollah continues to heat up with the Iranian backed group increasing its rocket fire against Israel’s communities. Yesterday, a drone exploded in a direct hit on Israel’s tourist get away in Rosh HaNikra and a missile from Syria hit into Israel’s Golan Heights

So where do things go from here? 

Can Israel fight a multi-front war against genocidal enemies with most of the world increasingly being infected by an acute form of the mind virus known as antisemitism? There is a lot of fear that we will see our weapons supplies cut off and leaders dragged to the Hague as well as being left alone to be destroyed. However, we as a nation have been here before. Israel fought its War of Independence with very little help from outside allies against enemies far more equipped and trained on multiple fronts. We won and then won again 19 years later with no help from America.

This generation of young Israelis has already proven itself to be remarkable in its self sacrifice, determination, and complete faith in its mission to rescue Israel from the chasm of abyss it now stands looking out over. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we face a darkness and true existential threat to find our compass and direction once again. Despite the leftist news reports about mass protests – very little people are actually participating. Most of the nation remains united and dedicated to victory. What we need now are leaders who have true faith and a clarity of vision to see all of this through.

Nahal Holds The Strip
The remaining Nahal Brigade is in control of the Netzarim corridor, a three kilometer wide strip that leads from Kibbutz Beeri to the Gaza coast line splitting the strip in two. Despite the worry that the war is winding down, the IDF has invested millions of dollars in the corridor enabling the Nahal Brigade to not only be able control it, but take proactive measures in enclaves to both the North and the South.

The IDF has reported that the Nahal troops have been carrying out pinpoint raids and operations against Hamas sites in the area. The troops in recent days killed numerous gunmen in clashes and ambushes, as well as by calling in airstrikes and artillery shelling, according to the IDF.

In a sudden move, Israel pulled out most of its troops today from Southern Gaza seeming to indicate that despite Bibi Netanyahu’s rhetoric, Israel essentially ended its active war against Hamas. All of this plus opening more “humanitarian” aid corridors as per Joe Biden’s request appears to signal that America has now forced Israel to stand down.

The 98th Brigade led by General Dan Goldfus has been on a tear through Khan Yunis, breaking down all of Hamas’ battalions embedded there. Most believed they would continue onto Rafah, preparing the groundwork for a coming final invasion of the IDF into the last Hamas stronghold. However, the Biden administration fearing a total and comprehensive Israeli victory over Hamas and the Arabs of Gaza has put a stop to it by threatening to cut off all arms supplies to Israel.

So has the Biden team finally halted Israel’s war?

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had the following to say: “The forces came out [of Gaza] and are preparing for their future missions, we saw examples of such missions in action at Shifa [Hospital], and also for their future mission in the Rafah area. We will reach a situation where Hamas does not control the Gaza Strip and where it does not function as a military framework that poses a risk to the citizens of the State of Israel.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu also made it clear that the move of the troops from Khan Yunis is not a ceasefire. “I made it clear to the international community that there will be no ceasefire without the return of hostages. It simply will not happen,” Netanyahu said at today’s cabinet meeting.

So what is really going on? Netanyahu and Gallant clearly have no intention of ending the war in Gaza. Doing so would end their political careers even faster. However, there has been no troop build up outside of southern Gaza that would indicate an invasion of Rafah is coming anytime soon. The withdrawal of the 98th and other IDF forces from Khan Yunis appears to be connected to Lebanon. Israel needs the Biden administration to lower it pressure on the Jewish State, while it prepares for a far more intense conflict with Hezbollah, the IRGC, Syria, and the thousands of Shiite Militia troops pouring into Jordan.

Israel may have decided to leave Rafah to be taken over after Hezbollah or at the very least take it over during the attack on Hezbollah – using the chaos of a far more intense conflict as cover. Either way, one thing is clear. Whatever comes next, it is coming fast.

Israel has continued to hit high value targets in Southern Lebanon despite Iran’s continued threats of retaliation over the killing of a high level IRGC general last week.

The IDF carried out a strike against a Hezbollah site in southern Lebanon’s Khiam, where an operative was spotted.

The IDF also said that an interceptor missile was fired at a target that entered Israeli airspace from Lebanon earlier today, in the Upper Galilee. Renewed suspected drone infiltration and rocket sirens are currently sounding in Kiryat Shmona and nearby communities.

The Iranian foreign minister said the following: ”The following days will be difficult for Israel.”

With Israel pulling out some of its troops from Southern Gaza, tensions on Israel’s northern border continue to grow. Iran appears to be ready to attack ay day.

It didn’t take long after the IDF’s 98th Brigade was pulled from Gaza for Hamas to begin firing rockets from the Southern Gaza Strip. Israel recorded rocket launches at Gaza area communities soon after the 98th was pulled. This is the natural result of a lack of an active IDF presence in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.


More ominous however, is the uptick in Iranian sent UAVs into Eilat. Yesterday, a UAV was intercepted over the skies of Eilat while vacationers were sent inside from the beaches. Last night another UAV was again intercepted by the naval base in Eilat.

The UAVs are Iranian in origin and appear to be coming over the Jordanian border into Israel’s southern city - a development that adds Israel’s eastern border to its many front conflict with the Iranian regime. There are also reports of Iraq’s Shiite Militias crossing into Jordan’s east in preparation to not only attack Israel, but to aid in overthrowing the Hashemite monarchy in Jordan. This would complete the encirclement of Israel as Egypt would certainly back away from its strategic alliance with the West.

If all of the above is not enough, the northern front with Hezbollah continues to heat up with the Iranian backed group increasing its rocket fire against Israel’s communities. Yesterday, a drone exploded in a direct hit on Israel’s tourist get away in Rosh HaNikra and a missile from Syria hit into Israel’s Golan Heights

So where do things go from here? 

Can Israel fight a multi-front war against genocidal enemies with most of the world increasingly being infected by an acute form of the mind virus known as antisemitism? There is a lot of fear that we will see our weapons supplies cut off and leaders dragged to the Hague as well as being left alone to be destroyed. However, we as a nation have been here before. Israel fought its War of Independence with very little help from outside allies against enemies far more equipped and trained on multiple fronts. We won and then won again 19 years later with no help from America.

This generation of young Israelis has already proven itself to be remarkable in its self sacrifice, determination, and complete faith in its mission to rescue Israel from the chasm of abyss it now stands looking out over. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we face a darkness and true existential threat to find our compass and direction once again. Despite the leftist news reports about mass protests – very little people are actually participating. Most of the nation remains united and dedicated to victory. What we need now are leaders who have true faith and a clarity of vision to see all of this through.

Hezbollah fired 10 rockets at the Western Galilee setting off sirens as far south as Nahariya.

Iran has come out swinging and threatening Israel for taking out its entire upper echelon of IRGC officials in Syria earlier in the week by leveling the consular wing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.
Iran has now threatened to make Israel burn and bleed in its territory in a much harsher way than ever before. The Iranian regime seems to have no choice and attack either through Hezbollah or directly itself. Most security experts expect an attack any day and are warning Israelis abroad and in Israel to keep vigilant.

The attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus is the most severe setback for the Ayatollahs in their war to destroy Israel and for regional hegemony. Taking out the entire leadership of the IRGC in Syria and Lebanon sets their coordination activities back a considerable amount. The only question is how do they save face and retaliate without igniting a regional war.

Syrian news reported that the IAF destroyed the consular section of the Iranian embassy and the ambassador’s residence, killing Mohammad Reza Zahedi and five other IRGC officials there.

Mohammad Reza Zahedi was reported to be a top commander in IRGC’s Quds Force — responsible for the unit’s operations in Syria and Lebanon, and thus the most senior commander of Iranian forces in Syria and Lebanon.

The strike in Iran took place shortly after Israel’s top general Herzl Halevi was in the Northern Command where he held a situational assessment meeting and “approved operational plans” in regards of the war against Hizbullah in Lebanon. Last week the IDF held a military wide “surprise drill” simulating an all out war with Hizbollah.

Last night’s strike represents a serious escalation with Iran. An attack on a country’s embassy or consulate is considered a direct attack on that country.

One of the questions that is being asked is why would Israel carry out such a serious attack now when it needs to hold back a second front? The fact is, Israel has everything it needs to take care of Rafah. The 98th Brigade under General Goldfus only has to be given the order and it will continue Southward, either capturing the Gaza/Egypt border or enter into the heart of Rafah beforehand. 

The Northern front is considered the more serious of the two and without taking at least to the Litani if not farther North, Israel remains in existential danger. The Biden administration may not want Israel to go into Gaza, but trying to stop Israel from taking on Hezbollah and Iran would cost Biden the election - after all Iran and Russia are in an alliance and it is hard to argue for Ukraine’s war against Russia and not back up Israel’s against Iran.

By jumpstarting the Northern war now – Israel takes the pressure off of its troops outside of Rafah and reshapes the war between Israel and Iran. As the Northern war progresses - expect the 98th Brigade and others to enter Rafah and take it over.

Why is the IDF making such a big deal about the completion of its operation against Hamas in the Hamad Town residential complex in southern Gaza’s Khan Yunis?

The answer is – Rafah.

The mission, which started earlier this month was carried out by Egoz and Maglan commandos, which unlike the Northern Gaza campaign - have been the primary fighting force going southward into Khan Yunis. After each neighborhood is cleared, other commando units takeover the neighborhoods as engineering squads blow up tunnels and special forces look for clues and intelligence.

The commandos had raided the multi-story buildings in the Qatari-funded neighborhood, where the IDF said there was Hamas infrastructure.

In one building, used by the deputy commander of a Hamas battalion in Khan Younis, the IDF says the troops captured a cache of weapons. More than 100 gunmen were killed in the operation, and buildings used by Hamas, including some that were booby-trapped, were destroyed, according to the IDF.

With the Rafah operation slated to begin soon, the successful sweep of the Hamad Town complex is key in collecting the needed intelligence to accurately locate the hostages and to understand the nature of Hamas defenses in Rafah. Regardless of the pressure being piled on Israel by the US administration, the IDF will be sent into Rafah. No one should expect the sort of ground invasion that was carried out in Northern Gaza, but rather the type of attacks carried out the by the 98th Brigade made up of Egoz and Maglan. What has made the Khan Yunis campaign work was the high level of Israel’s commando forces and battle readiness they achieved fighting in the North. 

Expect Israel to move into Rafah in stages without fanfare. The IDF will take Rafah neighborhood by neighborhood and tunnel by tunnel - it’s only a matter of time.
