Rev. Jesse Jackson has been a public fixture since at least the 1970s as an outspoken politician and activist. Now, Jackson is in the news for reasons other than encouraging far-left identity politics.
Journalist Danielle Young has recently come forward to accuse Jackson of sexual harassment.
Young claims that Jackson grabbed her thigh during an interview.
Photo-Op Gone Bad
Young explained the situation in an essay on The Root:
I walked toward Jackson, smiling, and he smiled back at me. His eyes scanned my entire body. All of a sudden, I felt naked in my sweater and jeans. As I walked within arm’s reach of him, Jackson reached out a hand and grabbed my thigh, saying, “I like all of that right there!” and gave my thigh a tight squeeze.
But it didn’t stop there. Young wrote that she reacted the way “most women” do:
I did what most women in an uncomfortable position do: I giggled. And I continued to giggle as he pulled me in closer, stared down at my body, smiled and told me he was only kidding. The entire time, my co-worker snapped photos.

Young claims that despite her warm smile in the photos taken of her with Jackson, she was actually “cringing on the inside” from his groping hands.
She wrote:
In many of the photos, you can see that I am visibly uncomfortable but attempting to laugh it all off. In the last photo, I am pointing to the camera, asking him if we can just take the picture.
Ironically, Jackson’s speech before this photo-op was all about the responsibilities of black journalists in America.
Repeat Offender
This is not the first time that Jackson has been accused of sexual harassment.
Tommy R. Bennett, a gay staffer employed by Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition, claimed that Jackson openly mocked his sexuality in front of others in 2010, and Bennett even said that Jackson asked him to perform oral sex, a claim that the reverend adamantly denied. The organization said in a statement:
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition unequivocally deny Tommy Bennett’s false claims of harassment, retaliation and discrimination.
[We are] fully cooperating with the Chicago Commission on Human Relations and expect to be fully exonerated.
Bennett also claimed that Jackson made him escort women to hotel rooms and help pack up female clothing after one of Jackson’s alleged trysts. He said he had to “clean [Jackson’s] room after sexual intercourse with women.”
Jackson’s Response
An official with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition has responded to Young’s recent accusation in a similar way to that of Bennett’s claims, saying “Although Rev. Jackson does not recall the meeting three years ago, he profoundly and sincerely regrets any pain Ms. Young may have experienced.”
Unfortunately, a simple apology doesn’t cut it when it comes to traumatizing sexual harassment — real change is what’s needed. As Young explained in her essay:
Honestly, I think it’s worth it for women to speak out against men who simply can’t keep their hands to themselves. Because that’s where it starts. My silence gave Jackson permission to continue grabbing at the next pair of thick thighs he liked. I’m hoping that my voice does the opposite.
