America has come a long way since the “ums” and “uhs” of the “TelePrompter President” — Barack Obama. Yesterday, during a tax reform round table in West Virginia, President Donald Trump literally tossed aside his speech notes to “tell it like it is” regarding immigration and voter fraud.
To the beat of his own drum
“You know, this was going to be my remarks. It would have taken about two minutes, but the hell with it,” Trump said, tossing his talking points high over his shoulder and sending them careening to the floor.
“That would have been a little boring — a little boring. Now, I’m reading off the first paragraph and thought, ‘This is boring, we have to tell it like it is,’” the president resolved. Watch his command performance below:
Rather than address the topics prepared by White House staffers, Trump revisited issues that were important to his base during his 2015-2016 presidential campaign.
“They’re not sending their good ones,” Trump said, repeating a controversial refrain he used to open his 2016 presidential campaign.
He continued: “We have to have strong borders. We will have the wall. We already started building.”
Referring to the caravan of over 1,000 Central American migrants headed for the U.S. border through Mexico, Trump explained:
Remember my opening remarks at Trump Tower when I opened—everybody said “oh, he was so tough.” I used the word “rape.”
Yesterday, it came out and this journey coming up, women are raped at levels that nobody has ever seen before. They don’t want to mention that. So we have to change our laws.
In response to the president’s off-the-cuff remarks, the mainstream media clamored to dismiss Trump’s assertions as “an unsubstantiated claim.” The Washington Post contended that, “Trump conjures a new immigrant rape crisis” while arguing that these sexual assaults ere actually perpetrated “by people [that immigrants] encounter along the way” — a distinction that the president never disputed.
Next, the president touched on voter fraud, arguing that Democrats “like” illegal immigration because it improves their electoral odds. Trump insisted that “in many places like California, the same person votes many times.” He explained:
They always like to say, “Oh, that’s a conspiracy theory.” It’s not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people. And it’s very hard because the state guards their records.
