U.S. Officials: Chemical Weapons Found in Blood and Urine Samples from Syrian Victims

Two U.S. officials told NBC News on Thursday afternoon that two different chemical weapons – chlorine gas and an unidentified nerve agent – were found in blood and urine samples from victims of Saturday’s suspected WMD attack in Syria.
The Syrian government has used chlorine on previous occasions, but medical personnel treating victims of the attack reported seeing the symptoms of a nerve agent like sarin as well. The number of people who died and the speed of their demise also argues in favor of a nerve agent mixed with the chlorine, possibly in the hope of using chlorine to conceal the deadlier ingredient.

NBC’s sources were said to be “confident” of the intel but “not 100 percent sure.” That seems an odd way of putting it, given that the samples are supposedly in American hands and have been tested by U.S. technicians.

A common concern voiced about this, and most other, alleged chemical attack in Syria is that information from the site is not completely reliable. The Syrian regime makes it difficult for international inspectors to conduct first-hand research and routinely blames rebel forces for either perpetrating or faking chemical attacks. Rebel groups are not always reliable eyewitnesses, to put it delicately. Authentic samples tested directly by U.S. and allied experts would be the gold standard for solid evidence of a WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) strike.

The officials who spoke to NBC also said that the U.S. and other countries have intelligence pinning responsibility for the attack on the Syrian government, including photographic images.

French President Emmanuel Macron also declared on Thursday that he has “proof” the Syrian government attacked the town of Douma with chemical weapons. Macron specified that “at least chlorine” was used by the Assad regime.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is sending inspectors to Syria, but they are not scheduled to reach Douma until Saturday at the earliest.

“I believe there was a chemical attack. We’re looking for the actual evidence,” Secretary of Defense James Mattis told the House Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

Mattis referenced the OPCW mission to Syria and complained about the “challenges we face where Russia has six times in the U.N. rejected and made certain that we could not get investigators in.” He cautioned that even if inspectors confirmed chemical weapons were used in Douma, “we will not know who did it.”

The World Health Organization published a statement on Wednesday saying it was “deeply alarmed” by reports of chemical weapons deployment in Syria.
WHO said it has received reports from partners in the Douma area that roughly 500 patients have been treated for symptoms consistent with toxic exposure, while over 70 deaths were reported from the attack, 43 of them apparently caused by toxic chemical exposure.

“Two health facilities were also reportedly affected by these attacks,” WHO added, reminding all parties in the Syrian conflict of their obligation under U.N. Security Council resolutions to refrain from attacking medical facilities and personnel.

Symptoms reported to the WHO included “severe irritation of mucous membranes, respiratory failure and disruption to central nervous systems of those exposed.”

The UK Guardian quotes medics in the besieged town of Douma who said patients displayed symptoms including “frothing at the mouth, suffocation, dilated and constricted pupils, corneal burns, central cyanosis—a blue tinge to the skin—and a chlorine-like odor,” all of which are consistent with chemical weapons such as sarin gas.

The Guardian notes that the attack appears to have broken the morale of rebel group Jaish al-Islam, which pulled out of Douma with thousands of civilians after consistently refusing surrender deals that would have driven them from Douma into northeastern Syria.

“Global norms against chemical weapons reflect a particular abhorrence to their disproportionate harm to the eldest, the most infirm, and the youngest among us,” the statement declared.

“We should all be outraged at these horrific reports and images from Douma,” said WHO Deputy Director-General Dr. Peter Salama.

“WHO demands immediate unhindered access to the area to provide care to those affected, to assess the health impacts, and to deliver a comprehensive public health response,” Salama said.

The statement stressed that WHO is not a forensic investigation unit but is solely concerned with treating the victims and doing what it can to prevent further chemical attacks.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which is interested in the forensic analysis of alleged chemical weapons deployment, said on Tuesday that it will send a team to Syria, with the support of the Syrian and Russian governments. Details for the OPCW mission have not been finalized yet. The international watchdog group stressed that it will not release information about the investigation before it has been completed, to ensure the integrity of the process and protect the safety of investigators.

Russia says Syrian 'chemical attack' was staged

Russia is an ally of Syria and gives military backing to its government
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said a reported chemical attack in Syria was staged by foreign agents.
A spokesman for Russia's defence ministry accused the UK of being involved in staging the attack.
The US and France say they have proof it took place and, alongside the UK, are considering military retaliation.
Russia, which has military forces deployed in Syria in support of the government, has warned that Western air strikes risk starting a war.
During a press briefing on Friday, Mr Lavrov said he had "irrefutable evidence" that the attack was staged as part of a "Russophobic campaign" led by one country, which he did not name.
Why is the West considering strikes?
Firepower of key countries
What can Western military intervention achieve?
Are we heading for a third world war?
General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for Russia's defence ministry, said: "We have... evidence that proves Britain was directly involved in organising this provocation."
The UK's envoy to the UN has called this a "grotesque, blatant lie", Reuters news agency reports.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on Friday that Russian experts have “found no traces of chemical weapons” at the site of the attack in Douma, Syria. He accused foreign intelligence services of faking the attack to justify action against Syria and discredit Russia.
“We have irrefutable evidence that this was another staged event, and that the secret services of a certain state that is now at the forefront of a Russophobic campaign was involved in this staged event,” Lavrov declared at a press conference in Moscow.

Later on Friday morning, the Russian military clarified that the foreign power Moscow suspects of staging the attack is the United Kingdom.

The Russian Foreign Ministry denounced reports of the chemical strike in Douma as “fake news” spread by the Syrian volunteer civic defense group called the White Helmets. The Russians accused the White Helmets and “other pseudo-humanitarian organizations headquartered in the UK and U.S.” of working “hand in glove with terrorists” to provoke military action against Syrian dictator Bashar Assad.

The White Helmets are not the sole source of information about the Douma attack. Other Syrian opposition groups have reported living and dead victims in Douma with signs of chemical exposure. The World Health Organization received extensive reports of patients with symptoms of toxic exposure from its medical partners in Syria. On Thursday, U.S. officials said American experts have examined blood and urine samples from victims in Douma and concluded they were exposed to both chlorine gas and a nerve agent. Presumably, Lavrov and his ministry would dismiss all of these sources as conspirators in a grand plot against Assad.

“God forbid anything adventurous will be done in Syria following the Libyan and Iraqi experience,” Lavrov added at his press conference, in a dig at the U.S. government.

“Even non-significant incidents would lead to new waves of migrants to Europe and to other consequences, which neither we nor our European neighbors need,” he warned.

Large-scale explosion reported at Iranian base in Syria

A large-scale explosion has been reported at an Iranian weapons depot in Syria, according to Arabic-language media reports.

The depot, said to be one of the biggest in the country, is located in Mount Azzan, near the suburbs of Aleppo.

Sky News reported that the explosion was caused by an aerial strike, and further said the area had been previously been evacuated for fear of an American attack.

The report comes less than 24 hours after the US, Britain, and France launched a series of airstrikes on a number of military targets belonging to the Assad regime during a joint operation overnight Friday-Saturday.

The targets included a scientific research facility near Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility west of the city of Homs, and a third location near Homs that contained both a command post and a chemical weapons equipment storage facility, the US military said.

The facilities hit had however reportedly been evacuated in recent days.

The airstrikes came in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the rebel-held town of Douma on April 7, which is said to have killed some 40 people, including children

Syrian state media reported only three people injured, while Russia’s defense ministry said there were “no victims” among Syrian civilians and military personnel.

The strikes were targeted to inflict maximum damage on sites linked to chemical weapons development. A top Pentagon official, Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, said the action would set back Syria’s chemical weapons program “for years.”

On Saturday, the UN Security Council rejected a resolution put forward by Russia condemning the strikes by the US, Britain, and France.

The three countries defended the action at an emergency council meeting Saturday, with the US vowing to take further action should the Assad regime launch another attack using weapons of mass destruction.

US President Donald Trump announced the joint action against Assad’s regime from the White House late Friday. He said the strikes were a direct response to the attack on Douma.

“The evil and the despicable attack left mothers and fathers, infants and children thrashing in pain and gasping for air. These are not the actions of a man. They are crimes of a monster instead,” Trump said.

President Donald Trump on Sunday had promised retaliation within 24-48 hours for the use of chemical weapons by Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad on Saturday on civilians, including women and children.
However, by Wednesday evening, no retaliation has occurred, and the world is watching and waiting. But the rhetoric between Russia and the U.S. has heated up a great deal.
Alexander Zasypkin, Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon, said on Wednesday:
If there is a U.S. missile attack, we – in line with both Putin and Russia’s chief of staff’s remarks – will shoot down U.S. rockets and even the sources that launched the missiles.
Zasypkin was alluding to a previous Russian threat to shoot down not only American missiles, but also the warplanes and battleships that launches them.

This only served to goad president Trump, who tweeted this:
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!
However, Trump was more conciliatory in a later tweet:
Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?
Longtime readers are aware that Generational Dynamics predicts that the Mideast is headed for a major regional war, pitting Jews against Arabs, Sunnis against Shias, and various ethnic groups against each other.

Saturday’s chemical weapons attack by al-Assad has caused a chain reaction that has raised tensions in the Mideast to the next level higher than they had been before Saturday. Here is a summary:
Israel and Iran appear headed for a proxy war in Syria.
Saudi Arabia and Iran are fighting a proxy war in Yemen.
The U.S. and Syria are headed for a confrontation in Syria.
The U.S. and Russia may be headed for a confrontation in Syria.
Turkey and Russia are headed for a confrontation in Syria.

Perhaps even more remarkable is that the political divide in the West, including the United States, is getting more hostile, and not just along party lines. It is increasingly hostile to hear American analysts and journalists side with Russia trolls in claiming that there is “no proof” that Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons or Sarin gas, in the face of conclusions reached by America, British, French, German and other governments.
Russia has lied repeatedly about Ukraine, Crimea, Syria, and other things, and for an American analyst to side with Russian trolls against multiple Western governments is truly a remarkable development. And as I reported yesterday, this has even extended to the point where Newsweek magazine is publishing easily debunkable fake news the U.S. Secretary of Defense is claiming that no evidence exists that al-Assad ever used Sarin gas.
So let me try to make this clear.
Since the Syrian war began, I have written 359 analytical articles with “Syria” in the title, and hundreds more where Syria was discussed, but not in the title. These articles are all available on my website for anyone to check.

I have an archive of almost 100,000 articles that I have copied and pasted in the last 15 years. Over 3,000 of those articles have “Syria” in the title, and probably tens of thousands more discuss the Syria war. These articles are from all political biases and from all media sources and all countries available on the internet. I typically study 10-20 of these articles in detail for each article that I write.

My point is this: 99.9 percent of the time, I know a lot more than you do. And I am telling you that there is no doubt that Bashar al-Assad has used Sarin gas several times on innocent civilians, and has used chlorine gas, phosphorous and ammonia many, many times on innocent civilians. There is no question about this.

But the fact that some Americans are calling officials in both the Barack Obama and Donald Trump administrators liars, and are saying that paid Russian trolls are telling the truth, is truly a remarkable development. Al-Jazeera and CNN and Reuters

Strikes of Syria are message to terrorists to continue with attacks - Damascus envoy to UN
Syrian envoy to UN said that the strikes against his country by US and its allies only send signals to terrorists that they can continue with their attacks in Syria and elsewhere.
Bashar Jaafari also questioned why the Western powers, who claimed Damascus used chemical weapons, did not share their evidence with the OPCW.

British PM May says it was ‘right and legal’ to take military action in Syria

British PM May says it was ‘right and legal’ to take military action in Syria
1017
UK Prime Minister Theresa May defended her “grave” decision to join the US-led strike against Syria without MPs’ consent. She maintained that the military action was “right and legal” and sends a message to “others.”
During her Saturday news conference, Prime Minister May had to repeat multiple times how “right” the decision to strike the Arab Republic was, despite the lack of parliamentary approval for the military option.

The prime mister said that the attack was a “success” according to a preliminary assessment, while the data is still being evaluated.

Reporters grilled May on the topic of failing to get parliamentary consent before taking the decision, but she maintained the same mantra, and said she will address MPs next week. Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, who earlier accused the PM of “waiting for instructions” from the US president, condemned the strike. He said that “bombs won’t save lives or bring about peace.”
However, the diplomatic effort is not as effective as it used to be, according to May.
The US-led strike on multiple sites in Syria, supported by France and the UK, came in response to the alleged chemical attack in Douma, Syria last Saturday. In her statement, May said the Syrian government is to blame for the incident, citing “open source accounts” and non-governmental group reports.
She is not the first British PM to take the “grave decision” to use national forces abroad before any substantial evidence is presented. Back in 2003, Tony Blair took the decision to invade Iraq on the false pretext that the country possessed weapons of mass destruction. These weapons have never been found.

Damascus has come under attack by the US, France and the UK at a time when Syria is returning to peaceful life, after battling a terrorist aggression for years, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said, as it condemned the attack.
"First, the Syrian people was subjected to Arab Spring, then Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL], now to 'smart' American missiles. A strike was carried out on the capital of a sovereign state, which for many years has been trying to survive under the threat of terror,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

She blamed “all those who claim moral leadership in this world, who declare their exceptionalism” for the attack, noting that "you should be really exceptional” to attack Syria at a time “when it was given a chance for a peaceful future.”
Zakharova also accused the American and other mainstream media of inciting the attack, noting that the White House's decision to launch a strike was based on media reports, photo and video shared on the Internet and spread online.
READ MORE: Pentagon says Syria strikes are 'one time shot' to send strong message to Assad
“15 years ago, the White House used a vial and its Secretary of State. Now Washington has used the media instead of the vial," she said, referring to the 2003 US invasion in Iraq and then-Secretary of State Colin Powell's "anthrax vial" demonstration to illustrate the allegations that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. None were ultimately found in Iraq.
The US, the UK and France launched a coordinated attack on Syria on Friday against what they claim are research, military and storage facilities involved in the production of chemical weapons.
In its assessment of the attack, the White House said that the decision to use force in Syria was based “on descriptions of the attack in multiple media sources,” as well as videos and images, including those showing “two assessed barrel bombs from the attack.”
The White House argued that “a significant body of information” suggests that the Syrian government used chlorine in an alleged attack on Syria’s Douma, which was then a rebel-held town, on April 7. The additional information, it added, indicated that sarin might have been used as well.
Hours before the attack, the US State Department said that it had “a very high level of confidence” that Damascus was behind the incident.

US President Donald Trump has approved military strikes in Syria in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack by the Assad government in Douma, near Damascus, last week. The UK and France joined the operation.
"A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad," Trump said in a televised address from the White House. He added that a combined military operation by the US, the UK and France is already underway in Syria.

Shortly after Trump's announcement, a statement from UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British forces to conduct "coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability."
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that he ordered French forces to carry out a military action against Syria in coalition with the US and the UK. “The facts and the responsibility of the Syrian regime are beyond doubt,” he said in a statement issued by his office, accusing Damascus of crossing “a red line” set by France in May of last year.
Macron said that France’s response was “limited” and solely aimed at “the capabilities of the Syrian regime for the production and use of chemical weapons.”

According to reports, the US-led attacks hit a research facility located in the capital's Barzeh District. Syrian state media said that the air strikes targeted Damascus and surrounding areas.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford said the US strikes targeted a research facility, as well as a "chemical weapons storage facility" near Homs. He said the naval and air forces were involved in the strikes, but would not elaborate "for reasons of operational security."

The UK defense ministry said that they used Storm Shadow missiles to target a Syrian military facility located approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Homs, claiming that the site holds chemical weapon "precursors."

The missile attack on Syria lasted for some 50 minutes, Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV reported, citing a Syrian military source, who said that Syria’s air defenses managed to shoot down a considerable number of incoming missiles.

Syria's air defenses have shot down 13 missiles in the Kiswah area south of Damascus, SANA state television reported.
The United States is using Tomahawk cruise missiles to attack multiple targets inside Syria, a US official told Reuters on Friday. The official did not disclose whether US warplanes were also involved in the strikes.
Last April, US President Donald Trump fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at Al Shayrat airfield in Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack in Idlib province.

The first videos and photos have emerged on social media showing what appear to be the strikes by the US, the UK and French militaries in the Syrian capital.
Syrian state TV reported that Syria’s missile defenses shot down 13 missiles south of Damascus.

The Chairman of the United States Army Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, however, said he was not aware that any missiles were intercepted, adding that the military has yet to assess the operational data. He confirmed that manned aircraft were involved in the airstrikes that hit three facilities in Syria that the US claims are part of its chemical weapons program.

One of the targets was a scientific research center in the greater Damascus area, Dunford said. The second was “a chemical weapons storage facility” in the vicinity of Homs, which, according to Dunford, housed sarin and chemical weapons precursors. The third target was also located near Homs and was identified by the general as a Syrian Army command post and storage facility.

The US military action in Syria was “a one time shot,” US Defence Secretary James Mattis said during a Pentagon press briefing, adding that he doesn’t rule out further action by the US if the Syrian government decides to mount chemical weapons attacks in the future.

The US used about double the number of weapons that US forces deployed during last year’s strike on Shayrat airfield, Mattis said. In that strike, 59 Tomahawk missiles were fired at Al Shayrat airfield in Syria in response to an alleged chemical attack in Idlib province.

The US and its allies struck civil and military facilities in Syria, violating the UN Charter and international law, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, responding to the American-French-British intervention in Syria.
Washington launched “an aggression against a sovereign state which is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism,” the statement from the president said. Putin stressed that the multi-national strikes were not sanctioned by the UN Security Council, and were carried out “in violation of the UN Charter and principles of international law.”

What's more, the current escalation of the Syrian crisis has “a devastating impact on the whole system of international relations.” Yet, history will set things straight as “it has already found Washington responsible for massacres in Yugoslavia. In fact, by using force, Washington is only prompting a new wave of asylum-seekers from Syria and the whole region, according to the Russian leader.

Meanwhile, Russia is calling an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the aggressive actions of the US and its allies, the statement concluded.

Washington and its allies unleashed the bombardment in the early hours of Saturday in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack by the Assad government in the town of Douma, 10 kilometers from Damascus, last week. The strikes were conducted before a team of investigators from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was due to reach Douma to determine whether the attack had indeed taken place.

Syrian air defense systems have intercepted the majority of cruise missiles and air-surface missiles from the allies, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier, adding that none of its own air defense units were involved in repelling the attack. According to the latest data from the Russian MoD, Syria intercepted at least 71 cruise missiles out of the 103 launched by the allies on Saturday.
Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei harshly criticized the airstrikes on Syrian soil, branding the leaders of the UK, US, and France “criminals.” He added that the attack will not result in any “benefits,” recalling the US-led operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Russian Ambassador to the US has warned of "consequences" after the US and its allies launched a coordinated military action against Syria.
Russia feels threatened by the US decision to strike Syrian targets in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7, which Moscow believes was staged.

"A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences," Anatoly Antonov said in a statement on Friday night. "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris."

Despite repeated warnings from Russia, US President Donald Trump has ordered American forces, along with their British and French allies, to strike military targets in Syria on Friday night. The Russian military operating in Syria was not notified about the American targets in advance, General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters following the attacks.

The US "specifically identified” targets to “mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved," Dunford said. "We used the normal deconfliction channel to deconflict airspace. We did not coordinate targets.”

While Trump said that the purpose of the US actions is to "establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons,” Antonov reminded that "the US – the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons – has no moral right to blame other countries."

None of the missiles that were launched by the US and its allies entered Russian air defense zones that protect facilities in Tartus and Khmeimim, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Warplanes and vessels of the US Air Force, together with French and UK allies, “launched a missile strike on civilian and military facilities” in Syria early Saturday morning, the ministry said in a statement. None of the cruise missiles launched by the US and its allies reached the Russian air defense zones that shield the facilities in the port city of Tartus and the Khemimim air base, it added.

The US, France and the UK launched a series of strikes on Syria in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack by the Syrian government in the town of Douma, located 10 kilometers from Damascus, last week. The announcement of the strikes came hours before the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) team was scheduled to arrive in Douma to determine whether chemical weapons had indeed been used there.

Moscow has harshly criticized the US-led strikes, with Russia’s Foreign Ministry saying that Damascus came under attack at a time when Syria was returning to peaceful life. "A strike was carried out on the capital of a sovereign state, which for many years has been trying to survive under the threat of terror,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis described Saturday’s strikes on multiple targets in Syria as “harder” than those in 2017, but said that no further launches were planned for the moment.

"Right now this is a one time shot and I believe it sent a very strong message," Mattis said during a press briefing in the Pentagon, adding that there may be further attacks against the government of Bashar Assad “should he decide to use more chemical weapons in the future.”

Specifying that more than twice as many weapons were fired as in April 2017, Mattis said that the aerial assault sought to “destroy the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons research development and production capabilities.”

The targets were described as a scientific research center in Damascus, and a pair of chemical storage facilities in close proximity to each other in Homs, a large city north of the Syrian capital.

"We were very precise and proportionate but at the same time it was a heavy strike," Mattis told reports.

Mattis added that the US, which has used manned aircraft to launch its missiles, had "gone to great lengths to avoid civilian and foreign casualties," while Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Joseph Dunford, who also took part in the briefing, said the Pentagon "specifically identified targets” to “mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved."

Dunford said “normal deconfliction channel was used to deconflict airspace” with Moscow, but that the US did not “coordinate targets” with Moscow.
The general said that US rockets encountered some surface-to-air “activity” but confirmed that no losses were sustained on the attacking side.
Mattis said that he was “confident” that chlorine was deployed during the April 7 incident in Douma, and did not “rule out” that sarin, a nerve agent, had been released. Dunford mentioned that one of the Homs facilities contained precursors and production equipment for sarin, though did not clarify if it had been in active use after Syria destroyed its declared chemical weapons arsenal in 2013.
