WHAT GOOD IS SALT?

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)

As Jesus speaks to the crowds on the mountainside, he points out the importance placed on His disciples in the world. He uses two well-known items to describe this importance. First, we must understand salt. Not so much in each of its uses, as it is used in a variety ways, but why did Jesus mention salt. Salt in the days of Jesus was used primarily for currency. It was a rare commodity but essential for daily living. We take it for granted for every household in America has a saltshaker. So, salt in those times was used but sparingly for it was not readily available.

When you research salt, you will find that salt in a shaker or container will maintain its favor, however, by taking one kernel of salt by itself and set it in the sun it loses it favor. It is burned out and left to dry.
In our spiritual walk with Christ, that can happen to us. When we leave the fellowship of other believers, we begin to lose our savor. We start neglecting our daily prayer time, we forego the reading of God’s Word, we cease going to church and soon our salt is no use to anyone.

In those times of trials and adversary, it is best for us to get deeper in our relationship with Christ. Call out to our fellow believers and share what is going on in your life and have them prayer for you, as much as you would pray for them. When the church gathers together, you gather with them and the fellowship of believers will begin to strengthen you in those times.

Have you lost your savor? Are you watered down? Don’t let your salt be thrown on the ground.
