Protesters urge Brown on Copenhagen
LONDON (UPI) -- Climate change protesters say they're urging British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to make meaningful commitments at the Copenhagen summit.
Groups such as Oxfam, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth say they plan to turn out in force Saturday at rallies in London, Belfast, Glasgow and Dublin to demand that Brown and other world leaders meeting next week in the Danish capital institute tough global emissions reductions, the BBC reported.
The British broadcaster said the organizations, along with environmental advocates, aid agencies and trade unions, were expected to protest in London, capped with a rally near the U.S. embassy in Grosvenor Square and followed by a march to the Houses of Parliament.
Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams was reportedly scheduled to address an ecumenical service held before the march at Westminster Central Hall.
"We will call on Gordon Brown to make Copenhagen count by committing rich countries to reduce their emissions by at least 40 percent in the next 10 years, finally putting the right sort of money on the table to help poor countries, and urgently start the process of decarbonizing our energy supply," Ashok Sinha, director of Stop Climate Chaos, told the BBC.
