Topic: +DEV+  The Peace Of God

The Peace Of God

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

Scripture Focus: Numbers 6:24-26

Years of slavery behind them; years of wandering surrounding them; years of warfare ahead of them... Imagine the encouragement inherent in the blessing Aaron is to pronounce over God's people: "The Lord bless you and keep you... the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." In the midst of hardship, the Lord gave
His Shalom!

Slavery to sin behind us; difficult circumstances surrounding us; spiritual warfare threatening to defeat us... Jesus knows our circumstances, too, and offers us His Shalom. In the Upper Room, He gave an encouraging promise: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

Life is sometimes very difficult, and we long for relief. We can identify with that wilderness through which Israel walked and with those challenges which Jesus' disciples faced. We cry out for peace. We, too, can experience the Aaronic blessing and receive His incomparable peace!

Insight: In the midst of hardship, you will find His peace!

You Must Not Do As They Do

"...I am the Lord your God. You must not do as they do in Egypt... and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan..." Leviticus 18:2-3

Scripture Focus: Leviticus 18:1-5

One of the biggest mistakes the children of Israel made, throughout their history, was their unwillingness to be different. After they settled in the Land, their cry was, "Now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have. We want to be like the other nations!" (see 1 Samuel 8:5)

God had told them to honor Him as their Lord and not to be like the Egyptians or Canaanites. But, like us, that seemed to be a hard word for them to follow. Our unfortunate tendency is to conform to the culture around us.

Paul challenges us to "Come out from them and be separate,' says the Lord. ... I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters" (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).

Often from a very young age on, we do not want to "come out and be separate" for Jesus. But note what is promised along with that command: an intimate relationship with God. We need to take advantage of it by being willing to be different. Recall the line from an old song: "Take the world, but give me Jesus."

Insight: Cultural conformity can lead to spiritual catastrophe.

Picture Of Slavery

"I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you  to walk with heads held high." Leviticus 26:13

Scripture Focus: Leviticus 26:1-13

Most of us can hardly imagine the horrors of slavery. We've read of the inhuman treatment of men and women ripped from familiar surroundings, shackled in a long chain of human "properties," and transported in the unspeakably filthy caverns of slave ships. Naked, each of those humans was sold on an auction block and added like animals to the properties of wealthy land-owners. Those and subsequent horrors are unimaginable.

Israel experienced the inhuman treatment of slavery for four hundred years, until God graciously rescued them, broke the bars of their yoke, and gave them freedom.

Paul uses the picture of slavery to describe the life of sin from which Jesus rescued us. Romans 6 contrasts that slavery to sin with the glorious freedom of being "slaves to righteousness." Sin was a cruel, demanding taskmaster. Sin bound you, took away your dignity, and controlled you. But you were "bought with a price." Now you have a whole new master, one ineffably gracious!

Insight: You have been freed in Jesus; don't go back to your old slavery!

Alive To God In Christ Jesus

"I am the Lord your God who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy." (Leviticus 11:45)

Scripture Focus: Romans 6

Many of us don't like to be told what to do. I know I don't - especially if it is something that I know I can't accomplish. And when God requires it, I'm in a quandary.

The whole message of the book of Leviticus can be summed up by His statement, "I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy" (vs. 44). It is quite a lofty command for the Lord to tell His people to be holy because He is holy. In fact, as I read that, I want to cry, "I can't do that! That bar is too high!"

Fortunately, I don't have to do it. Paul's marvelous discourse in Romans 6 gives us real hope. His whole thought is that we have been crucified with Christ, we have died with Him, and the power of sin no longer needs to overcome us. The holiness which we can't begin to attain through our feeble attempts has been accounted to us in Jesus. Now we simply need to "count [ourselves] dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6:11). Thanks be to God for His victory in us through Christ!

Insight: "I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."(Galatians 2:20)

Thank God For The Cross

Then Moses said, This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you. Leviticus 9:6

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 9:11-15

We can barely begin to comprehend, I think, the sights, sounds, and smells of the daily sacrifices which the Israelites were required to offer in order to have access to their God. The list in Leviticus 9 of sacrifices connected with Aaron's consecration may illustrate.

1. A sin offering for Aaron; a calf was killed and the blood presented to Aaron. He dipped his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; most of the blood was then poured at the base of the altar.
2. That was followed by a burnt offering for Aaron.
3. Then there was a sin offering for the people; a goat killed and burnt on the altar.
4. A burnt offering for the people. 5. A grain offering for the people. 6. A peace offering for the people.

Thenthe Lord showed up! "The glory of the Lord appeared to all the people..." (9:23). When I read of all that was required at that time, I can only rejoice with the writer to the Hebrews, that "we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus..."
(Hebrews 10:19, 20).

Insight: See the contrast; fall in worship. Thank God for the cross!

In His Holiness

The Lord said to Moses, Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:1, 2

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 10:1-10

Over the years I have had many people accept the challenge with me to read through their Bibles in a year... only to get bogged down when they came to Leviticus. Admittedly, reading the book of Leviticus can be a challenge. But should you accept that noble quest, let me offer a couple of suggestions.

First, read for an over-all impression; don't get bogged down by minutiae. Second, see God's holiness and how that relates to His desire for you today. Leviticus, if nothing else, reminds us that God takes sin seriously! Then, as you see His holiness, and the total impossibility of your meeting His standard, thank Him for His provision in His Son Jesus Christ.

In fact, read the book of Hebrews in conjunction with your reading of Leviticus. "But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself." That message is repeated a couple of times. The Law of Leviticus showed us the standard; Jesus, in His death, provided the fulfillment, once for all.

Insight: Rejoice in your salvation through the finished work of Christ. What you could never do, He did ...once for all.

We Have Seen His Glory

"Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle." Exodus 40:34

Scripture Focus: Exodus 40:34, 35

Where did they get all that gold, silver, bronze, colored yarn, and linen? They had plundered the Egyptians, at God's command. But surely they didn't have room in their backpacks for all of those things as they left on their hasty journey. Maybe not, but these things were for a very special purpose.

The last few chapters of Exodus tell me that God made some elaborate preparations for His very special meeting place with His people. Look at the climax! The Tabernacle is erected for the first time, and "the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle." What must that have been like?

The closest I can come to an understanding of that experience is our own - "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). When we gather to worship, especially around the Communion Table, we can get a glimpse of God's glory in our midst. That's Jesus, the ultimate expression of God's glory among us.

Insight: Open our eyes, Lord, that we might see the glory of your presence in our midst.

Declare The Glory Of God

"Then Moses said, Now show me your glory." Exodus 33:18

Scripture Focus: John 1:1-14

"The heavens declare the glory of God..." (Psalm 19:1). I look at the vastness of the night sky and see the glory of God. I look at the majesty of the rolling Pacific Ocean, the towering Rocky Mountains or the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas. In the grandeur of His creation, I see the glory of God.

The Children of Israel had seen the glory of God in His miraculous working on their behalf. He freed them from Egyptian bondage. He brought them through the Red Sea in a miraculous sweep of His hand. In His powerful works, they had seen the glory of God.

Moses asked for another display of God's glory in Exodus 33. He sought confirmation of His presence with them.

Do you see how God responds? "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion" (Exodus 33:19). God doesn't speak of His majesty; He focuses on His grace. "We have seen his glory" (John 1:14).

Insight: When we think of His glory, we may picture His majesty. When God thinks of His glory, He pictures His grace.

My Presence Will Go With You

"The Lord replied, My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Exodus 33:14

Scripture Focus: Exodus 33:12-19

I still love the theme chorus for a radio ministry with which I grew up years ago: "No, never alone, no never alone. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone."

More than a chorus, it was a promise - a promise made to Moses as he led the children of Israel in their journey toward the Promised Land. Moses recognized the impossibility of the task before him and pled with God that he might not be left alone.

That promise was repeated to others: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).

That promise continues, even to us. "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ...If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him" (John 14:18, 23).

The implication? "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you... Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

Insight:  "Never alone, no never alone. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone."

Excuses Excuses

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9

Scripture Focus: Exodus 32

We're good at making excuses. Look at these actual accident reports filed with insurance companies, for example: "A pedestrian hit me and went under my car." "Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don't have." "I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way."

While those are humorous, they're nothing compared to the statement Aaron made to Moses regarding the golden calf which the people worshiped while Moses was on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments. "Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf" (Exodus 32:24)! Who does Aaron think Moses is - or God, for that matter! -  to fall for that line?

Before you condemn too harshly, however, look to your own heart. Recall some of the excuses you may have used for your own sin. Frankly, I'm glad that God is a gracious God, that He knows how we are formed and remembers that we are dust. He doesn't buy into our excuses; He extends His grace as we repent.

Insight: Read Psalm 103 for an incredible picture of God's grace.

Make Disciples Of All The Nations

"Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit... and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20, NKJV

Scripture Focus: John 14:13-31

It is as we carry out the Great Commission that we are promised the presence of the Lord. In three centuries the early church grew from a small sect within Judaism to the religion of the Roman Empire. Throughout this time the church was hidden, growing by personal witness and small fellowships. There were no efforts in the public sphere. There were simply people who knew and loved Jesus, spoke about Him, and loved each other and their neighbors in a way that impressed pagans around them. They were people so convinced of the presence of Jesus with them that they faced death courageously. The "mustard seed" grew into a great tree.

Although we may encounter difficulties in carrying out the Great Commission, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:8, "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair." Perplexed in the original Greek means "no way through." Despair is the same word intensified, meaning, "utterly without any way through." There will always be a way; Jesus guarantees it.

Insight: The Lord will never let us think that there is absolutely no way through. Whatever our perplexities, he will keep us from despair.

"There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up." Exodus 3:2

Scripture Focus: Exodus 3:1-6

I was sharing with my pastor friend Dave some real consternation at the silence of God and His seeming absence when I needed Him the most. He said, "Mike, don't ever forget this great truth: 'When nothing's happening, something's happening.'"

Four hundred years of God's seeming absence from His people... forty years of His seeming absence from Moses while he tended sheep. But behind the scenes, God was sovereignly at work. When nothing seemed to be happening, something
was happening!

It was an ordinary, routine day when it started out. With every year the ground got harder for Moses in his tent, the muscles more sore each morning. But when God was ready, He really showed up! A bush that burned but was not consumed. A command to remove his shoes because he was on holy ground.

Jesus so often did the same thing. A man blind from birth; a woman many years hemorrhaging; a tax collector deep in sin. But at just the right time, Jesus shows up and life is changed. Get ready; this may be your day!

Insight: When nothing's happening, something is happening, and it's Jesus who is doing it!

My Ways Higher Than Your Ways

"I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them..." Exodus 3:7-8

Scripture Focus: Exodus 3:7-10

There were long days of suffering; years of waiting. Those Israelite slaves surely experienced deep discouragement, honest questions about God's absence, and sincere wrestling to understand God's working. They must have understood the truth that Isaiah later expressed, direct from God: "'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts'" (Isaiah 55:8-9).

We may not understand God's working, and certainly not His timing! Many of us have known long years of waiting for a sign of hope in a dark situation. But we can rest assured that He does hear, He does care, and - at the right time - He does come. Our task is simply to cry out to Him in prayer, to trust Him to know what is best for our needs, and to rest in His great compassion.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest"
(Matthew 11:28).

Insight: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

A Hunger To Know My God

"I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians." Exodus 6:7

Scripture Focus: Philippians 3:7-14

It's all about Jesus. Our hearts vibrate with the message of God's love, grace, salvation and victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. We cry out with the Apostle Paul, "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings..." (Philippians 3:10)

The person of Jesus, and God's working through Him in our lives, is wonderfully prefigured in His much earlier working with His chosen people Israel. Much of that took place in the wilderness, even as much of our lives seems to be "in the wilderness," too. As God patiently led and fashioned the hearts of His people, so He desires to work with us.

His purpose, expressed often in the book of Exodus, was "that you may know that I am the Lord." We come to know His person; we develop confidence in His power; we rest in the glory of our personal relationship with Him. As I study the Old Testament, I find a hunger to know my God; I am led to worship; I see my Savior; I long to know Him better. That's an exciting journey!

Insight: Lord, help us to know you more intimately so that we can trust you more implicitly.

"...that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord." EXODUS 10:2

Scripture Focus: Exodus 8:1-15

The matronly teacher stood in front of the Daily Vacation Bible School class telling the story of the ten plagues which God used to get Pharaoh's attention. As she told of the second plague, she lifted a loaf of homemade bread. With a serrated knife she cut the loaf in half, revealing inside a large ceramic frog! The nine-year-old boys in that class were awe-struck!

But they got the message - that God is serious, and not to be messed with! They also were told of God's provision of rescue for those Israelites who would trust Him. The final plague, the killing of the first-born, showed God's provision of sacrificial lambs. The lambs' blood was applied to the Israelites' doorposts, offering protection from the angel of death.

The lambs pointed to the ultimate Lamb of God, who would one day be sacrificed to provide salvation to those who would look to Him in faith. I was one of the boys in that class, and it was later that week - over forty eight years ago - that I put my faith in Christ. That frog got my attention!

Insight: He is an awesome God; don't mess with Him! He is a loving God; trust in Him.

The Sign Of The Blood

"The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood,
I will pass over you." Exodus 12:13

Scripture Focus: Exodus 12:1-28

Passover told the story. That annual feast, the most important in the Jewish calendar, told of the rescue of God's people from Egyptian bondage. When God sent the ten plagues, the final one was the most severe. All the first-born in Egypt were to be slain in one horrible night of judgment. God's chosen people, however, were spared if they slaughtered a sacrificial lamb and placed its blood on the doorposts of their houses. Every year that story was dramatically told. In fact, they're still telling it! All who know Jesus as Messiah are telling it, too.

Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with His 12 disciples - and gave it a whole new meaning. He told of His impending death as the ultimate fulfillment of that Old Testament picture. Those sacrificial lambs pointed forward to the Lamb of God whose blood was to be shed on Calvary's cross. Salvation for the children of Israel came as they, by faith, applied the blood to their houses. Salvation for us comes as Christ applies His precious blood to wash away our sins.

Insight: Every time we partake of the communion service, we're still telling the passover story!

For The Lord Delights In You

"You shall no longer be termed Forsaken... but you shall be called Hephzibah...; For the Lord delights in you... And you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken." Isaiah 62:4, 12, NKJV

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 62:1-12

We were in a passport queue in JFK when a two-year-old in front of us was getting very tired and fractious after a transatlantic journey. Suddenly, all he could do was plead to be lifted up. As he was cradled in his mother's arms, looking up into her face, he was quieted. He knew he was her delight.

Aaron's blessing on Israel included, "The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." This came to fulfillment in what Paul proclaims: "For God... has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6).

When we delight in someone, we love to gaze into their face. The Lord delights in us and gazes into our face and we into His. Psalm 42 says that "the Lord is the health of my countenance." The Message paraphrases it: "He puts a smile on my face." As we seek the face of Jesus Christ - that is, draw close to the Lord and experience His delight - He lightens us so that we may in turn lighten the lives of those around us.

Insight: Jesus took our sin on himself on the cross so that we could be his delight. this scripture certainly puts a smile on my face!

Just In The Nick Of Time

"For He says: 'In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.' Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." 2 Corinthians 6:2, NKJV

Scripture Focus: Romans 5:1-21

One of the saddest encounters of Paul occurs in Acts 24 when Paul witnesses to Felix, the hard and licentious Roman governor of Judea. Felix, after listening, says to Paul, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you." He continues to dally with Paul and eventually walks off history's stage.

This is similar to an encounter I had with a business person in the spacious days of Pan Am when I shared my testimony with a gentleman. He looked at me, said "That's the most beautiful thing I ever heard," and turned away. In neither case was "God's appointed time" recognized.

There are two words in Greek for time. One is "chromos,"' which refers to time as in "hour following hour." The other is "kairos," which means "the appointed time, the critical moment." "Kairos" is the word used in our verse. Paul uses the same word in Romans 5:6: "at just the right time... Christ died for the ungodly." Jesus came to save us at the crucial moment - in fact, just in the nick of time.

Insight: There are always god-given moments in which to respond to him throughout our christian walk. Is today one of God's kairos moments for you?

The Lord Speaks To His Beloved

"Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. And I will give her ...the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there..." Hosea 2:14-15, KJV

Scripture Focus: Joshua 7:1-26, Hosea 2:1-23

This "behold" certainly gives us pause. Outraged with Israel who has backslidden grievously and worshipped idols, God now says to His people through the prophet Hosea, "Therefore..." We might expect Him to follow with, "I will cut her off completely." But astoundingly, the Lord speaks to His beloved ones in one of the greatest outpourings of love to His people in the whole Bible!

He will be gracious to her like a lover and "allure her" into the wilderness where nothing distracts her. There He utters loving words to His wayward people, "speaking home into the heart" (Hebrew for "comfortably").

He promises to make the valley of Achor the "Door of Hope." Achor is where Achan, incurring the wrath of the Lord for disobedience, was stoned to death. The Lord is saying that He will take their punishment and assure them of redemption.

The metaphors and pictures throughout the Bible speak volumes to our hearts, too, centuries after the days of Hosea. Your Savior is calling you to redemption and hope as well.

Insight: Jesus has been "stoned to death" for us on the cross, our door of hope despite our idolatry and backsliding. Let us sing in gratitude!

Salvation Of The Righteous

“Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. …But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: He is their strength in the time of trouble." Psalm 37:37, 39, KJV

Scripture Focus: Psalm 37:1-40

Lest you read this verse and begin looking around  to study upright people, know first and foremost that there has only been one upright man. He, of course, is the lord Jesus. We can only be upright by the grace of God in which we stand, a grace extended to us through Jesus alone.

I have always been struck by the flying buttresses of gothic cathedrals - external supporting structures which hold up the incredible height of the nave. without them the buildings would collapse. one writer paraphrased the greek word "paraclete" (which means advocate or comforter) as "bean pole," because one of the Holy Spirit's functions is to stand alongside, as a bean pole does. without the Holy Spirit, we would not be supported and could not grow. you could say He is our "bean pole" or our "flying buttress." we are supported by the right hand of His Righteousness.

Still there are some believers whom we do behold as distinctively upright. Paul encourages us in 1 Corinthians 4:16 to imitate Him. Whom does Paul follow? Jesus!

Insight: There are many role models we can imitate, but ultimately we will only be upright because the Upright one supports us.

The Lord Of Our Deliverance

"Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back." Isaiah 38:17, KJV

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 38:1-20

King Hezekiah of Judah was dying and prayed his great desperate "arrow prayer" to the Lord for deliverance. The Lord added 15 years to his life. In our reading, Hezekiah pours out his soul in thanksgiving. One translation of our verse says "from the pit of nothingness." Isn't that what anguish of soul often feels like? It is the nothingness and the chaos which the Lord spoke His word into at the Creation. God's immense power and love were shown in His creating something out of nothing. Only He can accomplish that. As Andrew Bonar says, "the same Architect, the same skill, the same love" is active in our lives now, shaping a new coherent life for us out of our own bereft "nothingness."

Like Hezekiah we cannot just "psych ourselves out" of depressive thought patterns. But God can and does love us out of whatever our "pit of nothingness" may be. He wants to place each of us on a rock that is higher than we are (see Psalm 61:2). We can't haul ourselves up, but Jesus - who is our Rock - does it for us.

Insight: The Lord has delivered us in the past, is delivering in the present, and will deliver in the future. this is the unbreakable threefold cord.

God is our true helper!

"Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is with those who uphold my life. For He has delivered me out of all trouble; and my eye has seen its desire upon my enemies." Psalm 54: 4, 7, NKJV

Scripture Focus: Psalm 54:1-7

The "behold" in this psalm is intended to help us grasp deeply that God is our true helper. In Genesis 42:36 Jacob bemoans that things seem to always go wrong for him. "Everything is against me," he says. He has lost Joseph and now his sons beg him to allow his beloved youngest son Benjamin to go down with them to Egypt. Jacob fears that he will lose him as well.

All of us have probably expressed something to the same effect at some time. "It always rains when we go on vacation." "It just figures that this would happen to me." Or in an attempt to sympathize with others in their trials we might say, "It's not fair that you have suffered this." "Life can be so cruel."

We said the latter to a pastor friend some time ago and he asked, “Who is being cruel?" That brought us up with a jolt! All these expressions reveal a distrust in the over-arching providence of God. The Lord is the One who upholds our lives. Praise God that in Jesus He has delivered us through every trouble.

Insight:  "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him." (2 CHRONICLES 16:9)

Topic: Shemitah Year 2014-2015

Shemitah Year
2014-2015

The beginning of the Shemitah year began September 25, 2014 on the Feast of Trumpets
and it will conclude on September 13, 2015 on the Feast of Trumpets (this Sunday).

A Shemitah year occurs every seven years;
its known as a time of rest for the land
much like Sabbath, which occurs every seven days,
is a time of rest for man.

While observing Shemitah guarantees abundance,
neglecting it leads to judgment.

Every seven years we experience a Shemitah year (a shaking)
in which God allows something to happen that gets our
undivided attention whether we are ready or not!

This is what happened in the last several Shemitah years:

~ 1973 - The Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade occurred.
~1980 - Saddam Hussein invaded Iran signaling the Gulf War years.
~1987 - The U.S. Stock market crashed.
~1994 - Yasser Arafat returns to the Middle East.
A rare earthquake occurred in North America on
the New Madrid fault line,; it spanned the Midwest
of the United States up to Canada.
~ 2001 - 9/11 where nearly 3,000 Americans died.
~ 2008 - America experienced a stock market crash
on September 29  when the market fell 777 points in one day.
~ 2015 - so far you can add sufficient happenings:
out of control debt,
The Supreme Court says Gays can get married,
killing, buying and saling of baby parts,
the shaking of Wall Street just this last week,
a circuit court clerk is jailed for what she believes in,
just to name a few happenings so far. . .

Add seven years to 2008, and you have the year 2015,
in which you also find the last two Four Blood Moons of 2014 -2015.
Remember, God does everything at a "set time" (Psalm 102:13).

These series of Four Blood Moons contains a Shemitah year beginning
September 25, 2014 and concludes on September 13, 2015.
Both on the Jewish New Year (Feast of Trumpets) or
Rosh Hashanah the soundings of the Trumpets.

When the Jewish people violated the law of Shemitah,
exiled them for 70 years until the land
"enjoyed her Sabbaths" (2 Chron. 36:19-21).
Jewish tradition teaches that exile is the penalty for the 3
cardinal sins of murder, idolatry, sexual immorality,
and for neglecting to keep the laws of Shemitah!

This is a Shemitah year 2015,
which is also the appearance of the final four Blood Moons
which will be on September 28, 2015.
It will align with the Feast of the Lord within this century.
God always sends a nation warning before He sends
judgment; are we listening?
Shemitah will end this September 13th.
Will a crisis happen as before?
What earthshaking event will it be????
This we know:  things are about to change forever!!!

This does not mean the Rapture will happen.
Why?  Because the Rapture could happen at any moment.
God is getting ready to change the course of human history once again.
He is preparing to display the next series of signs in the heavens.
What is going to happen?  The real question is?
ARE YOU READY?

Watch and pray !  Be prepared, like the five wise virgins who made
sure they had extra oil for their lamps (Matt. 25:13).
~~
There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the
stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with per-
plexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts fail-
ing them from fear and the expectation of those things
which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the
heavens will be shaken.  Then they will see the Son of
Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory..
Now when these things begin to happen, look up and
lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.

The Coming Great Visitation
SWING VOTE
Pt. 7
by Darrel and Cindy Deville

Malachi 3 prophesies of a sudden great visitation, which results in a cleansing of God's house, His leaders, and restoring righteousness.  In Matthew 21, we also see Jesus cleansed the temple, followed by great miracles.  We believe once again God is coming to cleanse and purify His house for the great work ahead.  The following is the first part of a prophetic word that came during prayer in January 2008, after Cindy had seen a vision of the dire condition of the American church.

"There is coming a great visitation to the earth.
A great visitation by My  Spirit.
A visitation such as the earth has not seen or heard.
I will move in unprecedented ways
I will visit the White House
I will visit your home, O man of God!

So prepare, O man of God, prepare!
Prepare everywhere, prepare!
For I will come with great power,
And I will cleanse and I will purify this hour.
I will separate the precious from the vile,
I will remove all things from My house that defile. . .
I will have a glorious church,
And she will rise up and do great wonders in the earth!

It's time to cast aside every weight and sin
that would hold you back and pen you in.
Remove every impure and unclean
thing before your eyes,
The enemy has sent for your destruction and demise.
Arise, O man of God,
it is your day of visitation. . .!"

Although it seems darkness has been advancing everywhere, Satan and the powers of darkness had better beware, for the church of Jesus Christ is about to arise in all the earth - a glorious, victorious church (Is. 60:1-3, Eph. 5:27).
A new day is dawning and the old things will pass away.
God is getting ready to take His church to a whole new level, and now is the time to prepare because church as usual is coming to an end.. . .

What is it Going to Take?
SWING VOTE
Pt. 6
by Darrel and Cindy Deville

First, we should understand, we can fight day and night to change laws and legislation, but only god can change the heart and soul of a nation.
True change will come when souls are so shaken under the convicting power of the Holy Spirit that their eyes are opened to see how great their sin is, how great is God's love and how great their need is for Christ and His ways.
It's going to take this happening on a scale that has never been seen before - the greatest awakening ever!

Second, the body of Christ is the vessel that will usher in this great awakening.
Therefore, the depth of change we need in our churches and the nation must begin at the top - in the pulpits of America. . .

What The Church Must do
SWING VOTE
Pt. 7
by Darrel and Cindy Deville

Right now, God is calling all of us to our knees, beginning with those in the pulpits (the real swing vote), for they hold the keys to change everything.  God is calling the five-fold ministry (especially pastors) all across America to unite, humble themselves and lead the way - in genuine repentance and massive daily prayer.  If they will truly respond in obedience to God's cry and instructions - we will see the heavens opened and a holy visitation - a cleansing and purifying fire that will hit our pulpits and send ripple effects throughout the pews and out into the city streets and across our nation from shore to shore!

Note:  Our new book God's Answer for America is a very timely and prophetic message that reveals exactly what God is instructing pastors and churches to do to bring the greatest awakening ever seen, the three keys to bring dramatic and lasting change, and more.

With all this in mind, we point to Peter who declared that judgment must first begin in the house of God (I Peter. 4:17).  This is not a condemning judgment, but rather a purifying and purging that will bring the change within we must have in order to rise up in the earth as the glorious church Christ is returning for (Eph. 5:27; Isa. 60:1-2).  It's time for a holy visitation!. . . .

Pt. 5
by Darrel and Cindy Deville

Many with great concern have been speaking of and praying for a great awakening and reformation to bring change, but why have we not yet seen it?  And why have most of our efforts seemed to be - one step forward, two steps back?
The reality is the American church has been greatly hindered and largely ineffective because she has been compromised at most every level.  Not only have we compromised and watered down God's Word of truth, but in both the pulpits and pews, we are seeing unbelievable statistics of adultery, divorce, drunkenness, homosexuality and abortions.  More than 68% of men in church and in excess of 50% percent of pastors are regularly viewing pornography!  Sin and compromise abounds in the pulpits and pews of America.
Because of all this, like Samson with Delilah, we have been stripped of our strength, our vision, and our voice.  Is this perhaps why the world scoffs at our calls for righteous change?
The fact is, we (the American church) are actually part of the problem!  And before we can bring true reformation to our nation we need to reform our own house first.  Before we can get the White House in order we need to get our house in order. . . .

The Most Influential Position in the Nation?
SWING VOTE
Pt. 3
By Darrel and Cindy Deville

While the president and our nation's other leaders play a critical role, we believe there is an even more essential role in influencing the course of our nation - the pulpits of America.

Confirming this is Charles Finney.  It is said his life and writings influenced more people toward revival and reformation than any other preacher of the 1800's.   He recognized the critical role of the church - especially the pulpits (the five-fold ministry) - plays in the shaping of our culture and nation.  A portion of his sermon "Decay of Conscience" says it well:

Our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits
If immorality prevails in the land,
the fault is ours [the pulpits] in a great degree.
It there is a decay of conscience,
the pulpit is responsible for it. . .
If the church is degenerate and worldly,
the pulpit is responsible for it.
If the world loses is interest in [God],
the pulpit is responsible for it.
If Satan rules in our halls of legislation,
the pulpits is responsible for it.
If our politics become so corrupt that the
very foundations of our government are
ready to fall away,
the pulpits is responsible for it. . .

We believe the case could be made that, biblically speaking, the highest place of ultimate authority and influence for our nation lies not in Washington, D.C., but rather in the pulpits of America, for the spiritual greatly affects the natural (Eph. 6:12).  God's leaders and people hold the greatest spiritual authority as ambassadors representing the supreme kingdom of God, and Christ, the King of kings ( Matt. 28:18-20; Rev. 19:16).  And what the church allows or disallows both inside and outside the church can affect the entire nation (Matt. 18:18).

In relation to all this, Martin Luther King Jr.  prophetically wrote in 1963:

The church must be reminded that it is
not the master or the servant of the state,
but rather the conscience of the state.
It must be the guide and the critic of the
state, and never its tool.  If the church
does not recapture its prophetic zeal,
it will become an irrelevant social club
without moral or spiritual authority."

As the church, we are the body of Christ in the earth, anointed and equipped by God to lead and be "agents of change," a  shining light releasing heaven and God's will into the earth (Matt. 6:10).  But something has gone terribly wrong.

For decades much of the American church has been like a sleeping giant who has fallen into a lukewarm and disrepute state.  Instead of taking our place as salt and light, we have instead given way allowing the kingdom of darkness to invade, to sow, and take root all across our nation.  "While men slept, the enemy came and sowed tares" (Matt. 13:25).  And in spite of numerous efforts to influence society and the culture, much of the American church instead has been influenced and conformed to the culture and its ways.  As a result we have allowed the progressive stripping away of our godly foundations as our nation continues to spiral downward.

It's undeniable; we are in an epic battle for the soul of our nation.  And now the American church and our nation are like a war zone with casualties everywhere.  We are seeing burnt out, broken and backslidden pastors, as well as lives, marriages and families with broken hearts, broken homes and broken dreams.  So many are confused, are deceived, have gone astray and become prey to the enemy (the kingdom of darkness). . . .

The Root of the Problem

By Darrel and Cindy Deville
Pt. 2

At this time, it is critical that the church in America wake up, rise up and lead the way.  We must engage on every level and every front before it's too late.  However, our focus cannot just be Washington, D.C., and the issues of the day, for in order to see substantial and lasting changes in our nation we must first deal with the root of the problem, which is the hearts and souls in the nation.

Although electing the right president and leaders (who honor God) is very important, that is only part of the equation for positive change.  For right now, putting a new political party or person in place or just changing laws will be like putting a Band-Aid on a deeply rooted cancer.  Overall, the disturbing fruit we are seeing throughout America is merely a reflection of the inward spiritual and moral condition of the people.  And the sad reality is America's dark condition is actually a brazen statement against the American church, the one called to be the light to the nation (Matthew 5:14). . . .

It's About our Families and the Most
Important Vote of our Lifetimes
by Darrel & Cindy Deville
Pt. 1

Many believe this upcoming presidential election will be "the most important of our lifetime," one that could greatly affect our children, grandchildren, and the very future of America.

The alarming reality is America, like ancient Rome, is witnessing all the historical warning signs of an empire on the verge of implosion.  As a nation it seems we are in the midst of the greatest moral and spiritual crisis we have ever witnessed, both inside and outside the church.

Through our sin, complacency and compromise we have selfishly sold out our nation and our children's future - now we are seeing the fruit of it at every level.  Not only have we lost the cultural war in a moral landslide, we have a nation on the brink of collapse under the weight of great sin, runaway debt, greed and corruption.  In addition to this, we are seeing ever-increasing unrest and contention in our government and in our streets that threatens to rip our nation apart at the seams.

The progressive war against God and our nation's foundations has taken its toll and continues to thrust America further down a path of self-destruction.  Our Founding Fathers warned us that if America were to abandon God and His biblical truths and principles that our nation was founded upon then everything would fall apart.

Many have looked to a president for hope and change, but the truth is the real hope and change America desperately needs begins with God, and His church, the body of Jesus Christ.  The fact is, the American church carries the ultimate swing vote for the future of our nation. one that goes beyond a mere political solution to a divine solution.  For what we as the church do or don't do at this pivotal time in history will determine the course of this nation - either the collapse and destruction of America or the greatest awakening ever seen. . . .

A Mirage Is A Pool

"...'Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you.' The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water." (Isaiah 35:4, 7, NKJV)

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 35:1-10

There is a famous scene in the film Lawrence Of Arabia where a sheik mounted on a camel emerges slowly out of a shimmering mirage. "Parched ground" in our verse means "mirage," bringing to mind that scene from the movie.

In deserts in the blistering heat, one sees something that looks like a pool of water but, when approached, is nothing more than burning sand. This has deluded many a desert wanderer. You may get a similar idea driving on hot roads. With these images in mind, we see that "mirage" is a metaphor for the keenest of disappointments.

Our passage describes the New Earth. When in this life we catch a glimpse of some promised blessing and it doesn't come to fruition, it is like a mirage, a dashed hope. But God promises that the mirage will be a real pool filled from gushing springs! The yearned-for blessing will be ours in unbelievable fullness. Every boon hoped for from the Lord will be a reality.

Never doubt the promised future we have in Jesus, for nothing disappoints in God's future.

Insight: I may drift into thinking that promises are for others and not me. The "behold" in Isaiah is directed to you and me, "those who are fearful-hearted."

The Lord our Keeper

"Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand... The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul." Psalm 121:4-5, 7, NKJV

Scripture Focus: PSALM 121:1-8

The Hebrew word for "keep" is repeated six times in eight verses. It is also translated as "preserve" or "watch." The Lord our Keeper is one of the Old Testament names of God. In all of this deliberate wording, the Lord assures us of His constant personal protection; it is not just a general concept.

My antiperspirant is emblazoned with the slogan claiming "24 hour protection!" But our Keeper promises real protection for us at all hours. In the daytime when we are perhaps more likely to be assailed by doubts or feelings of guilt about our performance as Christians, the Lord extends His unfailing love to reassure and gird us up. In the night (especially in the hours before the dawn, when we may be oppressed by anxious or wrong thoughts, cares, anxieties about dear ones or the future, feelings of hopelessness) He sings to us - perhaps through a strengthening thought from His Word or through a sense of His loving presence. This turns us towards prayer. Even a glance at our Keeper dispels all worry.

Insight: All these things spell out the lord's constant protection. His keeping is not just an empty idea; it is a practical, experiential necessity.

Lord Wants Us To Know He Is For Us

"O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel... For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown." Ezekiel 36:8-9, KJV

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 35:1-10

Here the Lord says He is for the mountains of Israel because they will produce food for His people returning from captivity. By this the Lord is showing He also is for His people. He is on their side (see Psalm 118:6). With these verses the Lord wants us to know He is for us.

It is a primary need for us that we should feel appreciated and affirmed... that someone important to us is on our side. Perhaps you know how hard it is to perform well in the face of those in authority who are against you. When I was a young executive, I was experiencing some personal opposition. Just at that point, a senior director let me know that I shouldn't worry; he was on my side. Can you imagine how that freed me from anxiety? And we have Someone far higher than that who is for us!

Isaiah 38:17 tells how the Lord, in His deep love, "kept me from the pit of destruction." Our own pit may be the adversary's trap or it may be one of our own making, but the Lord loves us right out of it because behold, He is for us!

Insight: He never says "I told you so." instead, he loves us out of our pits of depression and sin
