NEWS UPDATE

Three pedestrians were lightly injured in a ramming terror attack in Jerusalem this morning, outside a synagogue in the Romema neighborhood. The 2 terrorists tried to fire at people with a submachine gun, but the gun apparently jammed. The terrorists fled the scene but were captured by security forces shortly after.

Major General Aharon Haliva has officially requested to resign from his role as Head of the Intelligence Directorate, in the wake of the massive intelligence failure leading up to Oct. 7.

Passover begins tonight and lasts until next Tuesday. We will be taking a break from publishing IsraelAM, and resuming after the holiday.

This year we will celebrate the festival of our redemption from bondage and the birth of our nation with a bittersweet taste, with over 130 of our brothers and sisters held in captivity by Hamas in Gaza, over 100,000 of our people displaced from their homes in the north and south, thousands of our soldiers battling terrorists in Gaza, the Lebanese border and throughout Judea, Samaria and the rest of the country.

We pray that the Almighty free our captives, vanquish the evil ones who seek to destroy us (wherever they may be), and grant all of our people the peace and safety that we so yearn for. This is a time of miraculous redemption. May we merit to see miracles and redemption this Passover.

Wishing you all a very happy, meaningful and redemptive Passover.

Chag Sameach!!

NEWS UPDATE

Israel struck an air base near the Iranian nuclear facility in Isfahan last night. The attack was apparently done with drones, and it’s unclear whether the drones were launched from Israel or from inside Iran and if any damage was caused. Explosions were heard in Isfahan, which Iran claims was the shooting down of suspicious objects. The very limited nature of the attack was meant to serve as a warning that Israel has the capability to breach Iranian air defenses and strike Iran’s nuclear facilities and military bases. The Iranian airbase targeted is similar in nature to the Iral airbase at Netavim that was slightly damaged in the Iranian attack. Syrian state media reported that Israel also attacked air-defense sites in Syria. Israel did not openly claim responsibility for any of the attacks. Iran said that is would not retaliate.

Israel reportedly informed the US right before the strike. In its symbolic response against Iran, Israel has abided by the requests of the US and European allies to not escalate the situation into a regional war while sending a clear message to deter Iranian attacks against it. Israel has hopefully gained some goodwill and given itself some breathing room to deal with Hezbollah and Hamas, possibly including a green light from the US to invade Rafah.

Iran, on the other hand, had the world squarely against Israel and had Israel under pressure from both Hezbollah and Hamas, but lost their upper hand, at least temporarily, by choosing to directly attack Israel and score points with their people and proxies.

The United States vetoed a resolution that would have granted the Palestinians full membership in the United Nations Security Council and essentially recognizing it as a state. The resolution was supported by Russia, China and France. Great Britain abstained.

Israel attacked Hezbollah targets in Lebanon this morning.

International ratings agency S&P has announced that it has cut Israel’s credit rating from AA- to A+ due to the conflict with Iran, the ongoing war in Gaza and the escalation on the northern border. In addition, Israel’s credit outlook has been downgraded from ‘stable’ to ‘negative.’ For more, click here.

Israel will likely respond to the Iranian attack after the Passover holiday, according to reports from Israeli and US sources. While the government is unanimous in the need to strike back at Iran, there are differing opinions regarding how to do that. A more drastic response would be to attack Iran directly using fighter jets or ballistic missiles, which Iran would most likely not be as successful as Israel was in stopping. A more limited option would be to attack Iranian proxies in the region. The US and the European allies are pressing Israel to limit its response, or to not respond at all. There are reports that the US could allow Israel to invade Rafah in Gaza, in exchange for limiting its response against Iran to avoid the possibility of igniting a regional war that would most likely bring the US into the fight.

Meanwhile, the US and the European Union are working on new sanctions against Iran.

The IDF continues to strike Hezbollah terror targets in Lebanon. Since Oct. 7, the IDF has eliminated hundreds of Hezbollah terrorists, including many senior commanders.

Security forces carried out a targeted raid to kill or capture Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists hiding in schools in northern Gaza. Several terrorists were eliminated when they fired on troops. Several terrorists were arrested. Civilians were warned beforehand to evacuate. Also this week, an airstrike eliminated a senior Hamas commander in northern Gaza. Airstrikes also hit dozens of targets, including rocket launchers primed for attacks on Israel.

The Cabinet reached a unanimous decision that a response to Iran on Iranian soil must occur "in the near future." The nature and timing of the response is still being debated. Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Minister Benny Gantz want to form a broader regional coalition before acting, while other ministers are advocating for a more immediate response.

Earlier today, Hezbollah launched about 15 rockets at the Meron air control base, located on the top of Mt. Meron, around 5 miles from the Lebanon border. The base contains Iron Dome batteries and is a major defensive control center for the IDF in the Galilee region. A few of the rockets landed in open areas and on the mountainside near the base. Dozens of rockets were fired at the western Galilee. Four missiles and drones fell in the Bedouin village of Arab Al-Aramshe, destroying a community center building and a car and injuring at least 13 people. Hezbollah said that the target of their missile and drone attack was an IDF facility in the village.

The IDF struck multiple Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. The IDF also eliminated Ismail Yusaf Baz, the commander of Hezbollah’s coastal sector, in an airstrike on his car near the town of Ain Ebel in southern Lebanon. Mohammad Hussein Moustafa Shouri, head of the rocket and missile unit in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force for the western sector, was also killed in a different strike. [How much longer can this non-war with Hezbollah continue, with over 100,000 Israelis displaced from their homes in the north?]

During the month of Ramadan, security forces arrested 300 suspected terrorists, including 15 who were on their way to commit terror attacks. Security forces eliminated 10 terrorists in airstrikes. For more, click here.

The Israel Air Force attacked a three-story building in Rafah on Tuesday night, killing seven and wounding several others. An IDF soldier from the Shaldag unit was seriously wounded in a battle in the north of the Gaza Strip yesterday.

NEWS UPDATE

Israel has still not responded to the unprecedented Iranian missile and drone attack on Saturday, although several government sources has said that a response was “imminent” but that it would be coordinated with the U.S. The war cabinet met yesterday to discuss response options. U.S. officials believe that Israel will respond in a limited fashion, by striking Iranian proxies in the region.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, half of the ballistic missiles fired by Iran fell short of Israeli territory. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates shared intelligence with the U.S. that helped facilitate the interception of many missiles and drones and Jordan allowed the U.S. to use its airspace to shoot down incoming threats. Jordan also allowed IDF jets to intercept Iranian missiles and drones over its territory. At least some of the ballistic missiles caused some damage to a C-130 military transport aircraft and some empty storage depots at the Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is reportedly preparing new sanctions against Iran.

France, Belgium, Germany and other countries summoned their Iranian ambassadors to condemn the Iranian attack.

The IDF continues to mount precision ground and air raids against Hamas terrorists in Gaza, resulting in the killing of terrorist and destruction of terror infrastructure. Meanwhile, humanitarian aid is flowing into Gaza. Negotiations for the release of the hostages are at a standstill, as Hamas continues to reject Israeli proposals while it waits to see if Israel will get into a war with Iran.

Several rockets and drones were launched at northern Israel by Hezbollah today. Hezbollah said that it attacked an Iron Dome battery in the northern community of Beit Hillel using drones.

Israel has not responded to the unprecedented Iranian missile and drone attack on Saturday, but it warned that it would respond to the attack at a future time and place of its choosing. To recap, Iran fired over 100 ballistic missiles, 30 land-attack cruise missiles, 150 UAVs and showed their people and allies that they were not afraid to directly strike Israel. The attack was muted in its scope to avoid provoked a massive Israeli response that would lead to a regional war. Had Iran launched thousands of missiles and drones in coordination with Hezbollah launching thousands of missiles at Israel, than the results would have undoubtedly been different. But they clearly wanted to make their point without triggering a larger response and all out war.

On the other hand, Israel showed its extraordinary defensive capabilities by intercepted 99% of all missiles and drones attacking it, most of them outside of Israeli airspace. The US sent Iran a clear message of support for Israel by shooting down 6 ballistic missiles and over 70 UAVs. British jets also shot down several drones. Other countries, including Jordan Saudi Arabia and the UAE, also participated in the interception of missiles and drones heading towards Israel. The message to Iran is that if there is a regional war, it will be facing not only Israel, but the US and a coalition of countries aligned against it.

By not responding in force, at least not immediately, Israel has scored goodwill points with the Biden administration and the international community, with the Western allies reaffirming their support for Israel and condemning the Iranian attack, while calling on Israel to avoid escalating the conflict by responding.

According to an Israeli TV report last night, Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided to postpone an invasion of Rafah.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility today for an explosive device that injured four IDF soldiers, just inside Lebanese territory. One soldier is in serious condition, two in moderate condition, and one had minor injuries. The incident is under investigation.

Iran reportedly communicated to the US via Oman that it will measure its response to the Israeli attack on its embassy in Damascus in order to avoid an escalation that could lead to a full regional war. Iran also indicated that it will use its proxies to respond. I wrote an article in the Times of Israel explaining why Iran doesn't want a major escalation leading to war now. To read it, click here.

A senior U.S. official informed Saudi Al-Arabiya channel, "The United States will participate in a response if Tehran escalates the situation inappropriately." Qatar and Kuwait have informed the United States they will not permit the use of bases in their countries for attacks against Iran.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reportedly told Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that Israel should have informed the U.S. of its plans for the strike agains the Iranians in Damascus, to give the US time to protect its troops from retaliatory actions

The IDF and Mossad have reportedly approved operational plans to attack Iran if Israel comes under attack from Iranian soil. The Prime Minister is meeting with security chiefs today. US intelligence reports indicate that Iran could launch its attack against Israel within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The European parliament yesterday voted to condemn UNRWA and the Palestinian Authority for their schoolbooks and learning material, claiming that they led to the October 7 massacre by Hamas and the war in Gaza. The resolution called for the EU to freeze its funding of Palestinian education until the books are "free from antisemitism and incitement to violence," and added that the funding must be conditioned on full compliance with UNISCO standards of peace and tolerance. This is the fifth year in a row that the EU has voted to specifically condemn the Palestinian education and its misuse of EU funds in order to teach violence and antisemitism, in its review of how tax payer funds are being invested.

Hamas has rejected Israel's latest proposal in the ongoing negotiations for the release of the hostages. The latest proposal reportedly includes a 6 week ceasefire, the release of 900 Palestinian terrorists from Israeli prison including 100 serving life sentences, and the return of 6 thousand Gazans to the northern part of the strip -- in exchange for 40 Israeli hostages, which would not include IDF soldiers. According to a report in Israeli Channel 12 News, Hamas claims that it does not know the locations of 40 hostages that are alive.

Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that there is a date in place for an invasion of Rafah, to eliminate the remaining Hamas battalions there.

Yesterday, the IDF attacked the building of the Hamas Interior Ministry in Al-Ma'azi municipality in the center of Gaza. At least 3 fatalities have been reported, including the mayor of Al-Ma'azi.

Israel's new C-Dome missile defense system, which is the Navy's Iron Dome version, performed its first live interception yesterday when it shot down a missile that entered Israeli airspace near Eilat. The C-Dome system is designed to intercept rockets, missiles and drones to protect maritime infrastructure, gas platforms and other naval assets.

Rockets were fired from Lebanon and Syria into northern Israel. The IDF responded.

U.S. intelligence assesses that Iran will respond to last week's Israeli assassination of high ranking Revolutionary Guard officers in Damascus through its proxies in the Middle East, rather than directly.

The Turkish Trade Ministry announced today that it will restrict exports to Israel in 54 categories in an attempt to pressure Israel to pursue a cease-fire in Gaza. For more, click here.

A female terrorist tried to stab soldiers at the Tayasir Checkpoint in the Jordan Valley this morning. Soldiers shot and killed the terrorist. No soldiers were injured.

The IDF has withdrawn all ground forces, except for 1 division, from Gaza, on the 6 month anniversary of the start of the war. The army said that the 98th division, which operated in Khan Yuni and conducted the Al-Shifa hospital operation, was being withdrawn to give the soldiers time to refresh and prepare for further operations. The Nahal brigade, comprised of several hundred soldiers, is the only one left in Gaza, guarding the main road intersecting Gaza and mounting targeted operations from there. At the peak of fighting, the IDF had over 20 brigades, comprising 30,000 to 40,000 soldiers, in Gaza.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said, “This is a long war where we cannot maintain the same force configuration at all times. We are changing forces and modes of operation. We will not allow Hamas brigades to remain active in any part of the Strip. We have plans, and we will act when we decide."

The IDF has made clear that its withdrawal from Khan Younis is not linked to any pressure from the United States. Another factor contributing to the decision to withdraw is to give space for civilians to vacate Rafah in the event of a large-scale raid. It also will enable Khan Younis residents who fled to Rafah to return to their homes. The IDF is still preparing for a major operation in Rafah, where Hamas still has 5 active battalions.

This new phase of the war, which will be focused on targeted raids based on intelligence, could last for 3 to 4 years. Prime Minister Netanyahu opened Sunday's cabinet meeting saying, "We are determined to achieve total victory in the war, return all our captives, complete the elimination of Hamas throughout the Gaza Strip, including Rafah, and to ensure Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel."

IDF soldiers killed in Gaza:

Cpt. Ido Baruch, 21, a commander at the Commando Brigade’s training base, from Tel Mond.

Sgt. Amitai Even Shoshan, 20, of the Commando Brigade’s training base, from Azri’el.

Sgt. Ilai Zair, 20, of the Commando Brigade’s training base, from Kedar.

Sgt. Reef Harush, 20, of the Commando Brigade’s training base, from Kibbutz Ramat David.

For a complete list of the soldiers killed in the ground offensive, click here.

Rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah continue and the IDF is striking Hezbollah bases and launch sites in southern Lebanon. Last night a strike killed a senior Hezbollah commander.

The IDF is still on high alert due to the threat of Iranian retaliation for Israel's elimination of several Revolutionary Guard generals and senior officers in Damascus last week.

[While Iran will have to make some show of retaliation, I think it has nothing to gain by doing something that escalates the situation into an all out war. Iran already is winning -- Hezbollah rockets are keeping 100,000 Israel's from returning to their homes in northern Israel, Hamas is still active and fighting in Gaza, US pressure is having a significant effect on Israeli actions in Gaza, and Iran continues to export billions of dollars of oil -- so why rock the boat now?]

The security cabinet is meeting today to discuss, what is being viewed as, an imminent threat of an Iranian attack in some form. The IDF has cancelled weekend leave for combat soldiers and is calling up reserves in the areas of aerial defense, intelligence and the home front command. Iran has threatened revenge for the Israeli attack earlier this week that killed senior commanders in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp in Damascus.

Footage from the scene showed the strike was precise, hitting only its target without any collateral damage to other buildings nearby. The buildings served as military command posts and were therefore legitimate targets. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed revenge. He also blamed the US for being aware of the attack. Russia condemned the attack.

Meanwhile, Iranian oil exports have hit $38 billion in the last 12 months, despite US sanctions.

The Knesset heard testimony from 2 female former hostages regarding the sexual abuse that hostages are enduring daily.

The Biden administration is reportedly set to approve the sale of 50 F-15 fighter aircraft to Israel, in a deal worth more than $18 billion. Delivery of the planes would occur over a period of 5 years.

A large barrage of dozens of missiles was fired at Kiryat Shemona and the surrounding area today. One building sustained a direct hit. One person inside the building was killed. He was Zahar Bashara, a resident of the Druze village of Kfar Ein Quiniyye. Other hits were also recorded in Kiryat Shemona. Hezbollah claimed that it launched the attack in response to an earlier drone strike by the IDF against a building in Lebanon in which at least one senior terrorist was killed.

Security forces mounted an anti-terror operation in Jenin yesterday. Several terrorists were killed and at least 10 arrested.

Combat operations against terrorists at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City continue, with the IDF eliminating dozens of terrorists in the last 24 hours. Combat also continues in Khan Yunis and central Gaza. For more, click here.

Hamas rejected Israel's latest proposal for a hostage release agreement. The U.S. State Department on Tuesday rejected claims by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the vote on a resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza has hurt efforts to free Israeli hostages held by Hamas. [It definitely didn't pressure or incentivize Hamas to accept a deal.]

Former hostage Amit Soussana, recounted publicly, for the first time, in an interview with the NYTimes, how she was sexually assaulted and tortured during her captivity. She described the details of her ordeal in detail, in order to raise awareness of what Hamas was really doing to the hostages. To read the full interview in the NYTimes, click here.

[The world has the ability to force Hamas into releasing the hostages. The US needs to pressure those countries with the influence to make that happen to act now. Unfortunately, the Biden administration has chosen to surrender to pro-Hamas demonstrators and pressure Israel into stopping its war against Hamas instead of doing everything it can to get the hostages, including American citizens, released. Shame on the Biden administration, and shame on the world.]

Rockets and drones were fired at northern Israel throughout the day, including at the IDF air control center on Mt. Meron. Several buildings were hit including a winery and an industrial complex. There were no casualties. The IDF continues to strike Hezbollah launch sites and targets in Lebanon. [Feels like the situation is getting out of hand and that Israel will need to take comprehensive military action to stop hit and degrade Hezbollah's capabilities.]

At least 14 rockets were fired from Gaza at Ashkelon and other communities in southern Israel.

For a complete list of the soldiers killed in the ground offensive, click here.

The UN Security Council yesterday passed a resolution, 14-0, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza without making it conditional on releasing the hostages. The resolution was supported by Russia and China. The US abstained, allowing it to pass. Although the resolution is non binding, it puts significant pressure on Israel while doing absolutely nothing to Hamas. It also harms the hostage negotiations, because it gives Hamas the hope of getting a ceasefire without the need to release any hostages. Prime Minister Netanyahu cancelled the special Israeli delegation's visit to Washington, in response to the vote. To read my article on this (with video) in the Times of Israel, click here.

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement saying that Hamas rejected every American compromise proposal and reiterated its extreme demands including an immediate end to the war, a total withdrawal of IDF forces from the Gaza Strip, and maintaining control over Gaza. The UN Security Council resolution has undoubtedly encouraged Hamas to maintain their unrealistic demands.

Over the weekend, dozens of rockets were fired at northern Israel by Hezbollah. The IDF struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and Syria, including in Baalbek, deep in Lebanon.

Staff Sgt. Lior Raviv, 21, of the Nahal Brigade's 932nd Battalion, from Rishon Lezion, was killed in fighting around Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

Sergeant Major Ilay David Garfinkel, 21, a soldier in the Duvdevan Commando Unit, from Sitria, succumbed to his injuries after he was critically wounded in a gunfight with a terrorist on Friday.

Israel reportedly has agreed to American demands to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including murderers, in exchange for the release of 40 hostages. But Israel still demands to have veto power offer the exact prisoners to be released. Hamas now needs to respond to the latest proposal. Israeli officials are pessimistic. For more, click here.

The U.N. Security Council is set to vote today on a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-sponsored resolution Friday that would have supported "an immediate and sustained cease-fire" in the Israeli-Hamas conflict. The US warned that the new resolution would harm negotiations between Israel and Hamas and, therefore, is likely to veto it.

Vice President Kamala Harris warned that Israel would face consequences if it invaded Rafah. The Biden administration has warned Israel not to invade because it would endanger the 1.3 million civilians in the city.

The IDF announced the capture of several senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders in Al-Shifa hospital. Terrorists remain barricaded in the emergency room.

Israel is determined to invade Rafah despite US opposition. Israel is confident that it can safeguard the civilians there and provide sufficient humanitarian aid. The US is not as optimistic.

Earlier today, a terrorist opened fire on a minibus near the towns of Dolev and Talmon in the Benjamin region of Samaria. Six people were injured, 3 seriously. IDF forces pursued the terrorist and engaged in gunfights with him for 5 hours until a helicopter fired at the terrorist and eliminated him. The terrorist, Mujahad Barkaat Mansour, 32, had served a prison sentence in Israel and also served in the Palestinian Authority (PA) chief's guard.

PM Netanyahu is meeting with US Secretary of State Blinken in Tel Aviv. Blinken will also meet with the entire war cabinet.

The U.S. has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for an “immediate and sustained ceasefire” in Gaza that is tied to the release of Israeli hostages. Russia is reportedly going to veto the US resolution.

The UK has demanded that Israel allow Red Cross or diplomatic visits to captured Hamas terrorists of the Nukhba force, as part of the conditions for continuing UK arms supplies to Israel. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir rejected the demand as well as any concession to release information about the prisoners, unless Hamas also releases information regarding the hostages.

Combat operations continue in Gaza and airstrikes continue against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Over 140 terrorists have been eliminated in the Al-Shifa hospital operation. Over 350 terrorists and suspects have been arrested.

A reserve soldier mistakenly shot and killed a Palestinian man who was a convert to Judaism, at a bus stop near Elazar. The 63 year old convert was found to have a knife in his bag, which he carried for self defense. The IDF is investigating the killing. For more, click here.

US Secretary of State Blinken is visiting Egypt today, where he met with Egyptian President al-Sisi and discussed the negotiations to secure the release of Israeli hostages held captive by Hamas and efforts to establish a Palestinian state. Blinked was in Saudi Arabia yesterday and will visit Israel on Friday. Blinken said that he was optimistic that a deal to release hostages was getting closer to fruition.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel is speaking with prominent Palestinian business leaders, with no ties to Hamas, to play a major role in the distribution of humanitarian aid and post-war governing of Gaza. Hamas has warned Palestinians not to negotiate with Israel, on pain of death. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have repeatedly made it clear that they will not play any role in the rehabilitation of Gaza unless it is part of a framework aimed at an eventual two-state solution.

A new poll published by the director of Ramallah's Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) found that 90% of Palestinians believe that Hamas did not commit any atrocities against Israel civilians on October 7 and 71% believe that Hamas was justified in its Oct. 7 invasion. Almost 60% of Gazans believe that Hamas will retain control of the area after the war's end and over 50% support Hamas' continued rule. Among Arabs in Judea and Samaria, 34% said they supported a two-state solution [as opposed to almost 100% of world leaders who do support it -- something doesn't add up here].

Yesterday, a terrorist, 22, from the Bedouin town of Rahat stabbed and killed a soldier in a store at the Beit Kama Junction, not far from Rahat. The soldier, Chief Warrant Officer (Rav Nagad) Uri Moyal, 51, from Dimona, managed to shoot and kill the terrorist before collapsing. The terrorist was raised in Gaza and moved to Israel 4 years ago. His mother is an Israeli citizen from Rahat.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant signed a letter stating that Israel uses weapons delivered to it from the U.S. in accordance with international law and that it doesn’t interfere with the entry of American humanitarian aid into Gaza. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will examine the letter and is expected to provide Congress with a report on whether Israel's commitments are credible, by March 25.

Mossad Chief David Barnea received Hamas’ official response on their proposal for a hostage release deal on Thursday. The proposal reportedly includes a first stage of releasing Israeli women, children, elderly, and ill hostages in exchange for the release of 700-1000 Palestinian prisoners, including 100 serving life sentences. Shortly after the response was received, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement: "Hamas continues to insist on unreasonable demands. An update on the matter will be brought before the War Cabinet and Security Cabinet on Friday." The proposal also includes details regarding a cease-fire, Israeli withdrawal and humanitarian aid. Qatar reportedly threatened to expel senior members of Hamas' politburo residing in Doha if they failed to persuade the leadership in Gaza to reach an agreement.

Hamas is hardening their stance in the negotiations in Cairo, demanding a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. US optimism that a deal could be reached before Ramadan is fading. At this point, Hamas probably believes that it is to their benefit to keep the fighting going on during Ramadan, raising tensions in the region. According to one report, the US is considering pressuring Qatar to deport Hamas representatives from the country if efforts fail to persuade their Gazan counterparts to agree to the deal.
US media is reporting that the Biden administration is considering prohibiting the use of American weapons by Israel in Rafah. The report said, "based on all the materials and evidence presented to us and our direct impressions from them, our conclusion is that there is a reasonable basis to determine that Netanyahu knew that the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai had been treated with inadequate maintenance for years and that this could pose a risk to the thousands of visitors, especially on Lag B'Omer. Even if, for the sake of caution, we assume that Netanyahu did not have actual knowledge of the matter, under the circumstances, he should have known." NEWS UPDATE
The US carried out another aid drop in Gaza. Several of the parachutes failed to open, resulting in the deaths of 5 Palestinians, including 2 children.
President Biden announced, in his State of the Union address, that the US will build a temporary port in Gaza to facilitate humanitarian aid transported from Cyprus. The aid will be inspected by Israel in Cyprus, before being transported by the US military to Gaza. The European Commission president said that a Spanish ship would make a trial run transporting aid from Cyprus to Gaza this weekend.
Biden also said, “Israel must allow more aid into Gaza and ensure that humanitarian workers aren’t caught in the cross fire. To the leadership of Israel I say this. Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. Protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority.”
He also said, “Israel has a right to go after Hamas,” Biden said. “Hamas could end this conflict today by releasing the hostages, laying down arms, and surrendering those responsible for October 7th. Israel has an added burden because Hamas hides and operates among the civilian population. But Israel also has a fundamental responsibility to protect innocent civilians in Gaza.”
Biden also called for a two-state solution. Several families of hostages along with former hostage Mia Schem were at the State of the Union as Biden’s guests.
An IDF investigation has found that IDF troops did not fire on civilians during the stampede on the aid trucks that resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians. Troops did fire on specific suspects that approached them, posing an direct threat.
The U.S., Great Britain and France called for an official meeting of the UN security council to discuss and condemn Hamas sexual crimes against Israelis.
Security forces killed a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist and arrested 9 other terrorists in Samaria last night.
Hezbollah has reportedly rejected attempts by US envoy Hochstein to arrive at a diplomatic solution to avoid a war. They also rejected Israel’s March 15 deadline to reach a solution. Israeli forces are preparing for a major conflict.
Combat operations continue in Gaza.

NEWS UPDATE
Jordanian newspaper Rai-al-Youm reported today that the deputy of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar delivered a comprehensive cease-fire proposal to the head of Egyptian intelligence. The proposal reportedly includes the release of hostages in exchange for high-profile Palestinian prisoners involved in the murder of Israeli civilians including Marwan Barghouti and Abdullah Barghouti. The proposal also includes a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza before the second group of hostages is released, and unrestricted movement within Gaza and unhindered access to aid.

Some Gaza clans are reportedly engaged in discussions with Israeli officials regarding assuming administrative responsibilities and managing aid distribution. Clan leaders are denying the claims. On Monday, Palestinian clan leaders published a statement rejecting Israel’s plan to establish a civilian government in the Strip, reaffirming their loyalty to “the legitimate political leadership” represented by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel would not impose restrictions on Arabs visiting the Temple Mount during Ramadan. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sought to limit the number of Moslem worshippers to just a few thousand.

The Planning Council in Judea and Samaria approved the construction of 3,500 housing units in Ma’ale Adumim, Efrat, Kedar and other communities.

The UN report on the sexual crimes committed on Oct. 7 and after that was released on Monday certainly lives up to our expectations of UN anti-Israel bias. To read the report, click here.

Hezbollah launched rocket barrages at Kiryat Shemona and other communities in the north. Some damage was reported in Kiryat Shemona. The barrages came shortly after Defense Minister Gallant met with White House special envoy Amos Hochstein, who is in the region to try and reach an agreement that would remove Hezbollah from the border with Israel and avoid a full-blown war. IDF jets strike multiple Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Fighters also shot down a drone that entered the Golan from Syria.

The IDF said it struck 50 Hamas targets over the past day.

UN envoy on sexual violence Pramila Patten published a 24 page report confirming that Hamas terrorists committed the barbaric rapes and other indescribable sexual crimes on Oct. 7 that we've all known about since that tragic day. Her report also found that hostages were also being raped. It stated, “Based on the first-hand accounts of released hostages, the mission team received clear and convincing information that sexual violence, including rape, sexualized torture, and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment occurred against some women and children during their time in captivity and has reasonable grounds to believe that this violence may be ongoing,” and that there were reasonable grounds “to believe that female hostages were also subjected to other forms of sexual violence”.

The report also included allegations by the Palestinian Authorities of sexual violence committed against Palestinian prisoners by Israel security forces. No evidence was found of any cases of rape by Israeli forces. For more, click here.

National Unity party leader Minister Benny Gantz met with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday. Harris told him that a reliable and implementable humanitarian aid plan is required before any major military operation in Rafah can be started. She also called on Israel to take further steps in cooperation with the U.S. and international partners to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and ensure its safe distribution. [I don't think she mentioned anything about the continued rape and torture of Israeli hostages being held captive in Gaza for over 150 days.]

Gantz also met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell at the Capitol, and with U.S. President Joe Biden's envoy to the Middle East Brett McGurk and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Today he’s expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and will then depart for London to meet with the British Foreign Secretary. Gantz said, "This is an important visit, and it's going well. I think I'm explaining Israeli interests, and how I see the U.S.’s interests in these contexts. I was received warmly." After heavy rains in February, the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) is less than one meter from full. The lake has risen by almost 1 meter over the past month and is currently 87.5 centimeters from its maximum level of 208.80 meters below sea level. All areas of northern and central Israel have already had well over their average annual rainfall.

An anti-tank missile was fired at the community of Margoliot, in the Galilee, this morning killing 1 foreign worker and wounded 9 others. The air force continues to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. One terrorist killed in the strikes is reportedly the grandson of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah.

There were intense air and ground operations in central and southern Gaza this weekend, including Khan Yunis and Rafah. Dozens of Hamas terrorists were eliminated. In an operation in western Khan Yunis, forces arrested 1,200 terrorists, including 85 who participated in the Oct. 7 massacre. Forces also destroyed over 20km of strategic tunnels under Khan Yunis.

IDF soldiers Killed in Gaza:

Sgt. Maj. (res.) Dennis Yekimov, 33, of the Bislamach Brigade's 17th Battalion, from Be’er Sheva.

Sgt. Dolev Malka, 19, of the Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion, from Shlomi.

Sgt. Afik Tery, 19, of the Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion, from Rehovot.

Sgt. Inon Yitzhak, 19, Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion, from Mitzpe Ramon.

Over a dozen soldiers from the same unit were wounded in the same incident, as a result of an explosion in a booby-trapped building in the Khan Yunis area.

The IDF reiterated its commitment to ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to appoint an independent committee to investigate the circumstances surrounded the deaths of dozens of civilians who tried to loot aid trucks in northern Gaza last week. On Saturday, the US air dropped 38,000 meals into Gaza.

Egyptian media reported that there has been significant progress in the negotiations for a truce and the release of hostages. Mediators are anxious to reach a deal before the start of Ramadan, on March 10, but they fear that Hamas leader Sinwar will purposely prevent a deal in order to further destabilize the region. Hamas is refusing to provide a list of living hostages and a finalized list of terrorists it wants released from Israeli prisons. Hamas claims it doesn't know the location of all of the hostages or which ones are still alive. For more, click here.
