While North Korea sought to upstage Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang with a flashy contingent of cheerleaders, nobody was going to steal the spotlight from First Daughter Ivanka Trump at the winter games. The U.S. president’s 36-year-old daughter was all smiles as she rooted for her country at the men’s Big Air snowboard competition, flashing a heart-sign gesture for Team USA that captured the mood of her nation at the event

Spectator and Diplomat
Trump was clearly enthralled by the snowboard competition, jumping to her feet on several occasions and allowing the drama of the event to reflect in her emotions. She stood out in the crowd in a bright red Spyder ski-suit with a blue scarf and patriotic USA headwear.

American Kyle Mack scored an Olympic silver medal at the men’s big air competition after an impressive display of mid-air acrobatics. Canadian Sebastien Toutant took home the gold medal, while the U.K.’s Billy Morgan came in third place.

The First Daughter’s appearance at the Winter Olympics was intended for more than just her role as an enthusiastic spectator, however. Trump will lead the U.S. delegation during closing ceremonies scheduled for Sunday, and she stated that she was in Pyeongchang not only to “reaffirm our bonds of friendship and partnership” with South Korea, but also “to reaffirm our commitment to our maximum-pressure campaign to ensure that the Korean Peninsula is denuclearized.”

Trump was echoing her father’s noticeably strong stance when it comes to the communist dictatorship on the Korean Peninsula. President Donald Trump’s use of strong language and even stronger sanctions have served as the only deterrent to a hostile, rising nuclear power that normally thumbs its nose at the international community, and some say his policies are responsible for recent diplomatic overtures between North and South Korea.

Ivanka Trump was joined in the stands by some of the smartest and most outspoken women in the world. To her right sat International Olympic Committee member and 1998 gold medalist Angela Ruggiero, and seated on the other side of Trump was South Korea’s first lady Kim Jung-sook.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also attended the competition with Trump, and the pair of leading conservative women exchanged comments throughout the athletic performances. Despite the recent Korean detente that allowed North Korean athletes to participate in partnership with their military rivals to the south during the winter games, Sanders promised that the Trump administration would not be “soft or weak” on Pyongyang in the future:

We’re going to continue a campaign of maximum pressure. The latest sanctions were the strongest that we have had on North Korea. Hopefully we’ll see a change on the part of the North Koreans to start to denuclearize the peninsula, that’s what our focus is.

I can tell you the president won’t make the mistakes the previous administration has and be soft or weak.

Leading the US delegation
During an earlier speech in Washington, the president claimed to have implemented “the heaviest sanctions ever imposed on a country” after imposing a restrictive shipping blockade on North Korea. President Trump promised to escalate the conflict if dictator Kim Jong-Un continues to accelerate his controversial long-range missile and nuclear tests.

During opening ceremonies, Vice President Mike Pence was inexplicably made to sit directly in front of Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong. The dictator’s sister has been referred to as “the Ivanka of North Korea” for the political influence she retains over the leader of her country.

While South Korean President Moon Jae-in has lauded “President Trump’s strong support for inter-Korean dialogue,” there are no current plans for Ivanka Trump to make any symbolic overtures to North Korea during the closing ceremonies. “As of now, there’s nothing planned,” Sanders told journalists.

Ivanka’s North Korean counterpart during closing ceremonies is Gen. Kim Yong Choi. The top North Korean military leader is widely suspected of leading a 2010 naval attack against South Korean that took the lives of 46 sailors.

The First Daughter was a fitting spokesperson for America on the international stage. She represents the best of America as an intelligent, articulate and patriotic young woman — an amazing representative for the finest athletes that her country has to offer.
