The-God-Who-Sees

Scripture Focus: Genesis 16
“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ŒYou are the God who sees me, for she said, I have now seen the One who sees me‚” (Genesis 16:13).

Poor Hagar. She did nothing to deserve what she got. It wasn't her fault that Abraham's wife Sarai couldn't bear him a son. It wasn't her fault that Sarai chose to give her maid Hagar to Abraham to bear him a son as her surrogate. It wasn't her fault that she became pregnant as a result of fulfilling Sarai’s demands. And it certainly wasn't her fault that Sarai reacted in an angry jealousy that compelled her to kick Sarai out of her home.

An unsettling desperation settled in on poor Hagar. Pregnant, homeless, jobless, and all on her own, she collapsed next to a spring in the middle of the barren wilderness, presumably to die.

God met her there. He assured Hagar that He had heard her affliction. He offered to her the comfort that she so desperately needed.

Hagar responded in praise, calling God by a revealing name: “You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees.”

Do you ever face times of desperation? Do you ever want to collapse under the weight of it all? Count on this: God sees you too.

Insight: During those times it seems the hardest to see God, He sees you the clearest. You can depend on that.
