PUBLISHED: 14:12, 7 April 2017 | UPDATED: 19:50, 7 April 2017A terror suspect has been arrested and confessed to ramming a truck into shoppers in Stockholm, killing at least five people.

The man went on the run after fleeing the scene following a chaotic shootout.

He was detained in the north of the Swedish capital and admitted responsibility for the attack, security sources told Aftonbladet.

A spokesman for the police has confirmed the arrest of a man 'with some sort of involvement in the matter', the newspaper reported.

The hijacked vehicle crashed into a packed shopping centre and burst into flames.

Three men jumped out from the lorry and opened fire before trying to stab pedestrians, witnesses said.

Two men were tackled to the ground and arrested - but a third suspect went on the loose - immediately making him Europe's most wanted man.

Police have released CCTV of the man wearing a green jacket, white shoes and a grey hoodie.

Stockholm's Central Station was shut down. The tube network was also closed amid fears the suspect was hiding underground but has now been cleared to open, according to Stockholm's public transport authority.

Officers said the vehicle crashed into a group of people on the street outside a shopping centre in Klarabergsgatan after racing down six streets at about 3pm local time.

Hundreds of shoppers were seen fleeing for their lives after the articulated lorry rammed into the corner of the building.

Horrifying images of the aftermath show blood smeared on the roads and bodies covered by blankets. Dozens more have been injured, some critically.

Stockholm Police said they are questioning two people in relation to the attack, but say they are not currently suspected of criminal activity.

A police spokesman said: 'I can confirm that we have taken in two people for questioning, but that does not necessary means that they are suspects.

'We want to talk to everybody who knows anything about this and sometimes it's better to talk at the police station than the place of the event.'

Armed terrorists were then seen running into Stockholm's Central railway station and opening fire. Two people were also said to have been stabbed.

Police have shut the station down, which is the main hub for communal transport in the city.

Spendrups Brewery said the truck belonged to its company and was stolen.

The truck's driver, who has not been named, was hurt in the hijacking after trying to cling to the lorry.

He had climbed out of the cab while delivering its cargo of beer. At least one man, wearing a balaclava, took the chance to climb in and drove off, knocking the victim over as he tried to get back on board. He was injured, but not seriously.

The terror attack came weeks after the Westminster Bridge killer Khalid Masood used a car to murder five people before stabbing a policeman to death outside Parliament.

Last year, ISIS terrorists used trucks to kill dozens in Berlin and Nice.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said everything pointed to the incident being a terror attack.

BRITISH TOURIST WITNESSED THE ATTACK

A British journalist who was on holiday in Stockholm described seeing 'lifeless bodies' covered with towels after the suspected terror attack.

Harriet Rose-Gale, 26, from Marlborough, Wiltshire, was eating her lunch when a truck ploughed into pedestrians in the centre of the city.

She said: 'I walked up the road and we could just see a lorry, a truck, and what we could only assume was a lifeless body in front of it.

'It had a peach or orange towel covering it and there was another body with a white sheet in the middle of the road.

'There were armed police running past us and shouting in Swedish. I don't know what they were saying.'

Swedish police confirmed three have been killed and eight injured.

Witnesses described seeing a 'lone man' put a balaclava over his face before he drove the drunk into crowds of people.

All public transport in the city is on lock down with train services connecting Stockholm Central Station and the underground being stopped.

Ulf Andersson, who is in Stockholm, said the police are 'really scared' and urging locals to move from central parts of the busy city.

He said: 'The police are really, really scared. They are telling people to move from the central parts of the city and not to walk in groups.'

Nils Bengtsson had just come out of a shop when he heard a 'loud bang' and that the truck was heading directly towards him.

He said: 'I immediately realised that something was wrong and ran back inside.

'I started to think about what happened in Nice and realised that the same thing is happening here right in front of me.

'The truck was driving really fast and drove towards people in full force.

'I was about one hundred meters from where the truck crashed. The truck drove on the left side of the street.'

'I was really afraid about what I might see when I came out from the shop. But I wanted to help those who were injured so I left the shop and walked out and was met by chaos.

'There were injured people everywhere around the truck.'

He added: 'A policeman in plain clothes came to the scene and asked everyone to leave. He screamed that the truck might be carrying a bomb.

'I did not see the driver. There was no one leaving the truck and the policeman checked the vehicle.

'The person inside the truck must have got stuck if there was anyone in the car.'

Dan Horning lives on the busy 'main walking street' where the attack took place and said the death toll could be 'enormous' because it's always so busy.

He was not inside his home at the time but said the articulated lorry would have raced down 'about six blocks' before it 'hit a lot of people'.

Mr Horning said: 'My door was right where the terror attack started. Somebody drove a truck down my street in Stockholm - about six blocks - and hit a lot of people.

'It is a main walking street in the centre of Stockholm and was filled with people. We don't know the death toll yet, but it could be enormous.'
