Horrifying video of Libyan slave trade goes viral as Obama is blamed

Recently released video footage depicts an active slave trade in Libya and places into question former President Barack Obama’s intervention into the region.

The videos, originally released by CNN, depict young men and women being auctioned off as slaves for farm work. Critics are blaming the activities of both Obama and his then-secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, as having led to the current state of lawlessness.

Policy change
The George W. Bush administration negotiated an agreement in 2003 with then-Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi. In exchange for Libya giving up its weapons of mass destruction, the United States would make no effort to depose him.

That agreement, made in good faith, was thrown out the window by the Obama administration.

As the BBC reported back in May, “Libya has been beset by chaos since NATO-backed forces overthrew long-serving ruler Col. Muammar Gadhafi in October 2011.”

Last year, Obama insisted that the Libya intervention was “the right thing to do,” but admitted that failing to plan for the aftermath was the “worst mistake” of his presidency.

Long before he became president, Donald Trump was prophetic on this issue. In August of 2011 he tweeted:

No one listened to him.

Power Vacuum
Just as the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq left a vacuum that was filled by the Islamic State, the ouster of Gadhafi left a vacuum in Libya — one soon filled by chaos. Both vacuums were the creation of the Obama administration.

“As shocking as it seems, it’s indeed true. The reason [the slave trade] can happen is because there is really no rule of law across much of Libya,” Leonard Doyle of the International Organization of Migration told Al Jazeera.

CNN recorded footage of men being sold for $400 as farm laborers at a nighttime auction in Libya. This reporting sparked global outrage and international organizations are now making an effort to investigate the situation and provide transportation for stranded migrants.

Another result of the Libyan vacuum was the September 11, 2012 overthrow of the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including that of Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

What can be done
While liberals repeatedly demand reparations for slavery in America 150 years ago, it’s important to raise awareness that slavery exists today.

The slave markets in Libya are part of a worldwide pattern that enslaves an estimated 40 million people. Actress Tessa Thompson tweeted:


Fortune reported:

Supporting the International Organization for Migration, which is working in Libya, helps them protect migrants in the country. Donating to global anti-slavery organizations, like Free the Slaves, End Slavery Now, and the Polaris Project also helps those working to end slavery around the world.

People [who want] to help can also advocate for a thorough investigation in Libya by the United Nations, and call on U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley to push for strong and swift action to combat the issue.

But it’s important also to remember that it all began with the overthrow of a Libyan dictator, initiated by Obama and Clinton.

We can’t let something like that happen again.
