The mainstream media says that the protesters killed in Palestine on Monday were innocent civilians, but now the proverbial horse’s mouth has spoken to set the record straight.

Senior Hamas official Salah Albardawil admitted in an interview Wednesday that 50 of the 60 Palestinians shot dead at the border fence on Monday were members of his terrorist organization.

Hamas admits protesters were terrorists
Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Jonathan Conricus tweeted a clip of the Hamas leader speaking with Baladna TV, a private Palestinian channel broadcast on Facebook. The terror leader didn’t sugarcoat the facts, and even appeared to boast about the 50 dead operatives, calling them “martyrs.”

“In the last round of confrontations, if 62 people were martyred, 50 of them were Hamas,” he said.

He did not specify what role they played in Hamas. The remaining 10 or so killed were “from the people,” he said.

Hamas has ruled the Gaza strip since 2007. Its sworn vow is to destroy the state of Israel.

Israel had already said on Monday that 24 of the protesters were identified as terrorists. The state has long accused Gaza of putting women and children in front of its riots and using other deceitful methods to win sympathy from the international community. Israeli officials said that the remarks from Hamas vindicated what Israel said this week about the riots.

“It was clear to Israel and now it is clear to the whole world that there was no popular protest. This was an organized mob of terrorists organized by Hamas,” said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon. The Israeli army published a video on Tuesday that appears to depict Palestinians setting off explosives at the border. Israel says that it only shoots at Palestinians as a last resort.

In a follow-up statement, Albardawil accused Israel of killing Palestinians indiscriminately, whether civilian or Hamas. He said that Israel was “legitimizing the killing of Palestinians just because they are Palestinians or just because they are Hamas, even if they were unarmed and defending their dignity and rights.”

Senior Hamas official sets the record straight on who was killed in last Hamas-orchestrated riots: "50 of the 62 martyrs were Hamas". Take his word for it. This was no peaceful protest.

Border riots simmer
The admission by Hamas backs up what the United States said earlier this week in the aftermath of the shootings. America has defended Israel’s sovereignty, joining the Jewish state in blaming the deaths on Hamas terrorists hiding among protesters to incite violence against Israel.

Israel’s critics accuse the U.S.-backed state of persecuting unarmed, innocent protesters. Images of bloodied Palestinians and plumes of tear gas outraged the international community after Israel opened fire on rioters near the Gaza-Israel border on Monday, killing 60 and injuring hundreds.

The protests had been going on for about six weeks but got much worse on Monday after the United States moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Since then, Guatemala, Paraguay, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Honduras have set up or are considering establishing an embassy in Jerusalem.

The border protests started on March 30 with Palestinians agitating for the “right of return” for refugees to their ancestral homelands in areas now settled by Israel and to lift a blockade on people and goods moving into and out of the coastal strip. But Israel accuses Hamas of blending in with protesters to attack and break into Israel.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,500 wounded by bullets since the protests began, according to Palestinian health officials. One Israeli has been injured.

40,000 or so Palestinians gathered at the border on Monday. Many threw stones, flung burning tires and flew incendiary kites over to the Israeli side.

The protests reportedly calmed down on Tuesday after Egypt intervened. But Hamas chief in Gaza Yahya Sinwar said the protests will continue and that Egypt had affirmed the Palestinians’ right to assemble.
It looks like the mainstream media’s narrative about “peaceful protesters” was a dud after all.
