The pound has surged to its highest level since July 2016 after an exit poll showed Boris Johnson on course to win a big majority in the general election.

Shortly after 10pm, the pound rose about two per cent against the dollar to reach $1.3469 and was up 1.6 percent against the euro at €1.2054.

Both figures were the highest since the immediate aftermath of the referendum which triggered Brexit.

The expected election result will end the months of deadlock in the House of Commons and bring an end to the uncertainty over Brexit.

It will also put an end to Jeremy Corbyn's hopes of imposing higher taxes and nationalising industries.

The Conservatives have also sought to emphasise their economic track record since they came to office in 2010.

Sterling had a jittery polling day, with investors fearing a possible hung parliament amid claims that the race was narrowing.

The pound hit a low of €1.1755 and $1.3060 during the day, but it had bounced back by the time of the exit poll.

If the exit poll is proved correct, Mr Johnson is on course for the biggest Tory majority since Margaret Thatcher's third election victory in 1987.

Mr Corbyn's party is on course for a historic defeat, slumping to 191 seats and losing dozens of seats to the Conservatives.

The Labour leader will be under immense pressure to stand down after leading the party to what appears to be its worst result since the 1930s.

Official results will be counted over the coming hours but it would need a huge polling error to prevent a Tory majority.

Elected leader in 2015 with little support from his own MPs, Mr Corbyn has faced repeated plots to remove him since then.

He confounded those critics with an unexpectedly strong performance in the 2017 election, gaining seats and denying Theresa May a majority.

But since then his party has been engulfed in an anti-Semitism crisis and Mr Corbyn has been widely criticised for his handling of it.

During the campaign, he failed to apologise to Jewish people in a stormy interview with Andrew Neil.

In addition, Mr Corbyn's equivocal stance on Brexit has infuriated many Remainers who wanted him to support cancelling Brexit.

Under pressure from party activists, Mr Corbyn finally agreed to back a second referendum.

However, he drew fresh criticism for pledging to be 'neutral' during a second referendum campaign.

Opening the door to cancelling Brexit may also have cost Labour votes in some of its heartlands where it is set to lose seats.

The exit poll shows the Conservatives on course for a large majority, their largest since 1987 +5

Tory strategists believe key to victory is grabbing Labour heartlands including Workington and Grimsby

Boris Johnson is on track to staggering victory in the election battle tonight as Labour's 'red wall' of Brexit-backing strongholds collapses.

The hotly awaited exit poll shows voters handing the Tories 368 seats, with Labour languishing on 191 - the worst performance in modern history. The SNP are predicted to get 55 and the Lib Dems 13.

The bombshell numbers comes after a month of brutal political struggle, as Jeremy Corbyn tried to sell his hard-Left agenda to the UK public.

Amid reports of 'mega' turnout and unprecedented levels of tactical voting by Remainers, Tories had become increasingly nervous that victory could somehow slip from their grasp, despite a slew of polls during the campaign having given them a double-digit advantage.

But the fears turned out to be overblown, as the party's mantra of 'get Brexit done' seemingly swung previously staunch Labour supporters.

Mr Johnson was fighting for votes to the last minute tonight, tweeting to urge supporters to cast their ballots as he campaigned in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat.

Going into today, Mr Johnson's lead in the polls was narrowing and he hoped to secure a swathe of northern Labour seats to give the majority that eluded Theresa May in 2017 - when she won 318 seats to Labour's 262.

But Labour sources claimed its traditional vote was holding up.

One veteran Labour activist, who had previously been pessimistic about the party’s prospects said their vote appeared to be holding up better than feared in ‘red wall’ seats.

‘It doesn’t feel like there’s any real move towards Johnson or away from Corbyn,’ they said.

‘I think we could easily see almost exactly the same result as last time.’

A Tory defending a south east marginal said turnout seemed ‘very high’ so far and the result could be ‘closer’.

However, another Tory fighting to keep a seat in the north east said they believed turnout was ‘good’ among their own supporters.

Another Conservative source agreed that turnout looked ‘mega’.

But they added: ‘No way to know if it's really up or if people are just voting early because it's winter and they don't want to do it after work.’

Mr Johnson's hope of getting Brexit done was hanging in the balance tonight as voters turned out in their millions to take part in the most important election of a generation.

Constituencies across the country reported  the longest queues seen at polling stations for years today, sparking fears of a Remainer 'youthquake' that could derail attempts to leave the EU.

Thousands snaked around the block outside schools, village halls, churches, pubs and other community buildings in the wet and cold to exercise their democratic right at the UK's 50,000 polling stations from 7am.
What is the exit poll?
The exit poll provides the first real indication of winners and losers from the most important election in a generation.

The figures have been produced by eminent pollsters including Sir John Curtice, Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher.

They have spent the day asking tens of thousands of people which way they votes, as they left 144 ballot stations across the country.

Individuals fill in a mock ballot paper and drop it into a mock ballot box to encourage truthfulness.

The team then calculates a prediction for seats won by the parties - which is kept a closely guarded secret until the polls close at 10pm.

The last exit poll in 2017 was a bombshell as it predicted - correctly - that Theresa May was being stripped of her overall majority.
