The religious culture war comes to Israel - Left-Wing
This belief in moral discrimination and the importance of behavior is particular to Judaism. But the universalism that characterizes left-wing thinking negates Jewish particularism ...
Benjamin Netanyahu and King Charles turn out to have something in common.

(JNS) At the root of the convulsions over Israel’s new government lies the secular world’s hatred and terror of religion.

Put to one side, for now, the question of whether the hysterical predictions of extremism and the end of Israeli democracy are remotely likely to happen.

Park the fact that we don’t yet know how this new government will behave, and whether the pledge made by returning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will resist any extremist demands made by his religious allies is genuine or achievable.

Point your periscope instead at Britain, a country whose ability even now to punch culturally well above its weight tends to be ignored by people in both America and Israel.

Direct your gaze in particular at King Charles III, whose first Christmas message to the nation was broadcast last week.

While going out of his way in the address to affirm the depth of his Christian faith, he also name-checked Britain’s “churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and gurdwaras” as doing good works that expressed “loving our neighbor as ourself.” He further declared that “the power of light overcoming darkness is celebrated across the boundaries of faith and belief.”

This was a deliberate attempt to stamp himself as the head of a family of faiths and cultures. The King is personally very open to other forms of spirituality. His attraction to Islam is well known. He is also deeply sympathetic to Judaism.

He was very close to Britain’s late Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. Recently, he visited London’s JW3 Jewish community center, where he beamed as he danced with Holocaust survivors and others.

And he paid a moving personal tribute to Rabbi Abraham Levy, the former head of Britain’s Sephardi community, who died last week. “May his memory be a blessing” said the King, using the traditional Jewish words of respect for the deceased.

Crucially, however, he understands that Christianity underpins British national identity, which itself depends on continuity.

That doesn’t mean other faiths aren’t welcome in Britain. It means that, if a nation is to remain united, it needs to have a religious cultural umbrella under which all can shelter.

America’s own doctrine of the separation of church and state may make this hard for some Americans to understand. However, Americans fool themselves if they think secularism holds their nation together, because biblical values infuse America’s core culture and its constitution.

Indeed, classical liberalism—the basis of Western modernity—holds that all citizens must adhere to the overarching core of the culture, such as democracy, sexual equality and one law for all.

Under that cultural umbrella, they are free to practice their own faith or traditions provided they don’t contradict these core precepts.

Left-wing ideologues, however, claim that biblical precepts do contradict core Western values. This is the reverse of the truth. Today’s progressive ideologies derive from the revolt against the biblical values that underpin Western civilization.

Leftists claim that only if the Bible is junked can everyone be treated with equal respect. But “equal respect” was in fact invented by the Hebrew Bible and is absolutely central to Judaism.

The problem is that the left confuses “equal respect” with identical treatment and outcomes, which they call “non-discrimination.” But also central to Judaism is the notion of discrimination between acts that build communal bonds and those that destroy community and nation.

This belief in moral discrimination and the importance of behavior is particular to Judaism. But the universalism that characterizes left-wing thinking negates Jewish particularism.

Left-wing universalism therefore undermines the idea of the nation state and the corresponding rule of law rooted in popular assent, both of which Judaism pioneered.

The notion being trumpeted by opponents of Israel’s new government that sexual libertarianism is normative is also entirely false. Traditional norms of sexual identity and behavior are laid down as non-negotiable in Jewish religious law, and are in turn foundational to Christianity.

It’s perfectly possible to stick to these religious precepts while pursuing policies that are humane, compassionate and just towards individuals and minority groups. But for the left, only its own “identicality” dogma is humane and compassionate.

In Britain, this has led to the insistence that public officials with conservative religious beliefs act against their faith. So Christian registrars are forced to officiate at gay adoptions, or Orthodox Jewish schools which never teach about sexuality are pressured to teach about homosexuality. Christian bakers have been forced to fight in court for the right not to bake a cake to support same-sex marriage.

In Israel, the left claims the new government will deprive LGBTQ people of the right to general medical treatment (essential to a classically liberal society). Religious Zionists in the coalition claim this is untrue, and they merely want to defend the right of Orthodox Jews not to be forced to act against their religious beliefs (essential to a classically liberal society).

It remains to be seen which of these perspectives turns out to be correct—if indeed this issue is allowed to emerge at all. But the left’s claim that if Israel departs from left-wing shibboleths it will enter a dark and oppressive place is wide of the mark.

Far from creating a liberal, tolerant society, progressive ideologies are profoundly illiberal and coercive. Far from producing the brotherhood of mankind, left-wing universalism sets group against group in a battle for power over each other.

A constitutional monarchy, such as exists in Britain, promotes unity because it exists above politics and therefore above division. This was the great insight of King David, who unified the tribes of ancient Israel to form a coherent nation and whose limited monarchy was the inspiration and template for the British Crown.

King Charles’s patent desire to bring the British people together has transformed him from a figure widely disparaged and distrusted as cold and remote into a person viewed affectionately as the benign and genial grandfather of the nation.

The State of Israel, of course, doesn’t have a monarchy. Nor does America, which is being pulled apart over these cultural issues.

For all the unifying strength of the monarchy he represents, however, King Charles is actually in a lonely and perilous position. For the prevailing culture in Britain is actively undermining the religious continuity he realizes is essential.

No political party in Britain is prepared to face down and defeat the culture warriors writing women and conservatives out of the public sphere. No party is prepared to stop children being taught the lie that Britain and the West were born in the original sins of colonialism and oppression. No party is prepared to conserve and defend the classical liberal settlement underpinning freedom, tolerance and democracy. And no party is prepared to challenge radical, pagan environmentalism—to which the King, with his belief in the spiritual unity of all creation, is unfortunately also deeply attached.

In America, the parallel collapse of conservatives’ understanding of what was at risk and needed to be defended led to the implosion of the Republican Party and the rise to power in 2016 of Donald Trump as the only way to defeat the cultural predations of the left.

In Israel, the collapse of the moderate, religious Yamina Party meant that those who believe the combination of Jewish religious integrity with a modern economy, scientific advancement and the duties of citizenship is crucial to Israel’s identity and survival were left with no political representation.

They have been presented instead with a stark choice between religious zealots in one camp and left-wingers in the other screaming about the end of democracy while urging insurrection against an elected democratic government—and with Netanyahu holding the line against the extremism on either side.

Considering the way Netanyahu has been characterized as beyond the pale, this is indeed an irony. He and King Charles, it turns out, have something rather crucial in common.

The anointing oil to be used at King Charles’s Coronation has been sourced from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Harvested from two olive groves on the mount, the holy oil was consecrated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Friday.

It is based on the same ingredients as the oil used at the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, containing olive oil, fragrance rose and orange blossom and is based on a formula “which has been used for hundreds of years,” according to the palace. Charles’s grandmother Princess Alice of Battenberg is interred at the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalene at the Mount of Olives.

“From ancient kings through to the present day, monarchs have been anointed with oil from this sacred place,” Archbishop Justin Welby said. “As we prepare to anoint the king and the queen consort, I pray that they would be guided and strengthened by the Holy Spirit.”

Biblical roots of the Coronation

The act of anointing an English monarch with holy oil can be traced back to the 7th and 8th centuries. But its roots go back to Bible times.

The sourcing of the anointing oil from Jerusalem and other Biblical symbolism is another reminder of the Judeo-Christian roots of Britain’s Christian traditions. When the ancient kings of the different parts of England embraced Christianity, they looked to the Bible as a model build their kingdoms. By swearing covenantal promises to acknowledge Christ’s reign and God’s law, they hoped to enter into the same blessings as Israel. Notably, they didn’t look to the monarchies of other nations – they looked to Israel.

It’s hoped that the Coronation of King Charles will follow the same Biblical tradition as that witnessed at the Coronation of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.  On that occasion, following hundreds of years of tradition, Queen Elizabeth was anointed in a moment regarded so sacred that a canopy was placed over her to hide the anointing of holy oil from public viewing. The then Archbishop made the following proclamation over her, citing the words of King Solomon;

“Be thy hands anointed with holy oil.

“Be thy breast anointed with holy oil.

“Be thy head anointed with holy oil, as kings, priests, and prophets were anointed:

“And as Solomon was anointed king by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, so be thou anointed, blessed and consecrated Queen over the peoples, whom the Lord thy God hath given thee to rule and govern, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”

The traditions carried out at the Coronation ceremony are steeped in Biblical examples. For instance, 2 Kings 11:12-14 states, “And he brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the Testimony; they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”

After the anointing, the ceremony leads to the crowning and then a Benediction. At the Coronation Queen Elizabeth II, the Archbishop said a prayer beginning with the words “God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness”

In David’s Psalm describing the king, it is said that God “meets him with the blessings of goodness;
You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.” (Psalm 21:3). This demonstrates that a monarch’s authority and rule over a kingdom is in fact delegated to him by God who is Sovereign. A similar picture is depicted by the royal robe, representing righteousness, the orb, symbolising Christ’s sovereignty over the world, and the two scepters, one representing God’s justice and the other His mercy.
But another emblem of Biblical symbolism remains somewhat of a mystery. The Stone of Destiny or Stone of Scone, first used by King Edward I is placed underneath the oak coronation chair. It is kept in Scotland, but is brought to London especially for Coronation. This 16 inch wide sandstone is similar to one found near Bethel. There is a tradition that Jacob used the stone as a pillow when he had the dream of angels ascending and descending the staircase that reached into heaven. Jacob blessed and anointed the stone with oil. The mention of a pillar stone in the kingly anointings in 2 Chronicles 23 and 2 Kings 11 have raise speculation that it could be related.

Our hope and prayer that the Bible will remain very much central to King Charles’s Coronation and that the significance of his ‘Jerusalem anointing’ will lead him in turn to bless Israel during his reign.

Queen Elizabeth 11 made a fatal mistake.
They King Charles needs to get that Holy Stone of David back from Scotland.  Please listen to what history writes about the Stone of David and all that has gone wrong since it has been given to Scotland.  The Bible was written by God and expected to be understood and followed so I pray for England that they recover that Stone of David soon and turn things back around to being good for England, Europe and the rest of the world.

Queen Elizabeth II Made a Fatal Mistake
Perspective on the legacy of Britain’s longest-lasting monarch
BY GERALD FLURRY • OCTOBER 3

Queen Elizabeth ii’s funeral drew over 500 world leaders and attendees from 175 countries, and it garnered the largest live tv audience in history. How could the Queen attract such attention?

This lady set an amazing example in many ways. And she was perhaps the last personal reminder of the great British Empire, over which she presided for a time.

“By enshrining the identity of the nation above and beyond temporal politics, the constitutional monarch acts as a focus for unity often denied to countries that have instead elected presidents as their head of state,” wrote Melanie Philips, an outstanding journalist in Britain and in Israel. “Few also appreciate that the British monarchy is patterned on ancient Israel. It’s why the monarch is anointed; it’s why words uttered by ‘Zadok the Priest,’ taken from the first Book of Kings, have been sung at every English coronation since 973 c.e. Some British monarchs in the past have even purportedly traced their line back to King David.”

How about that—all the way back to King David? Few indeed recognize this, but you can prove it true! This is exactly what Herbert W. Armstrong taught from the Bible and explained in his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy.

2 Samuel 7:12-13 record God’s promise to King David: “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.” This throne will stand forever! Isaiah 9:7 and other verses corroborate this universe-shaking truth.

Whether you realize it or not, that throne represents the only hope we have in this world! Jesus Christ is about to return to claim that throne. Ruling from there He will bring this world peace, joy and happiness—in spite of man and man’s rebellion!

“The word that springs to mind from these affecting scenes is devotion: the late Queen’s devotion to the people and their devotion to her,” Phillips continued. “In largely secular, godless Britain, there is a strong element of the sacred in this relationship between the people and the crown.

“The monarch in Britain is consecrated to a higher king [that is, God]. At the coronation, which will take place next year, Charles will be anointed. The oath that he takes is not to the people but to God.” That is true! Will King Charles keep that oath to God?

Yes, God has been deeply involved in the British crown. And it truly does trace back to King David of ancient Israel! Here is an even more shocking truth. Queen Elizabeth sat on David’s throne for 65 years—but in her last five years, she did not sit on David’s throne! I will explain.

‘Worst Decision of Her Life’
One inspiring sign of the connection between Britain’s royal family and the throne of David is the stone over which British monarchs are crowned. It is called the stone of destiny. Its remarkable origin is described in Genesis 28:10-22, and I explain it in my free book The Key of David. This same stone appeared in coronations in ancient Israel (e.g. 2 Chronicles 23:11-13). If you study it, you will see that this stone was actually a symbol of the throne of David and of Jesus Christ, our Rock!

In 1996, Britain’s prime minister chose to send this stone back to Scotland, and Queen Elizabeth approved. That showed terrible faithlessness and disrespect for their history with God!

That stone is a symbol of Jesus Christ and the throne of David! And Christ is going to sit on that throne forever! Ponder that deeply, because God takes this unusually seriously.

In the Trumpet at the time, I wrote, “I believe this stone is the most precious physical thing on this Earth. I also believe that Queen Elizabeth just made the worst decision of her life! And the British government has made the biggest mistake in its history! … Their actions have scorned the omnipotent, living God. And there is going to be a terrifying penalty unless they repent” (August 1996; emphasis in the original).

Apparently that stone will be returned for King Charles’s coronation. But look at what has happened to that family since they sent the stone back to Scotland. They have been plagued by disastrous scandals for the whole world to see! That was a great trial for Queen Elizabeth.

Relinquishing that stone and disdaining God as she did proved to be a fatal mistake, spiritually, for Queen Elizabeth ii. Five years ago, God ended the crown’s connection with the throne of David. You can read about this in my September 2017 cover story, “The Fall of the British Royal Family.”

King Charles iii is a descendant of David. But he is not sitting on David’s throne as his mother was just five years ago.

Jeremiah’s Prophecy
The book of Jeremiah was written and preserved so we could have it in this end time (Jeremiah 30:1-9). “[I]n the latter days ye shall consider it,” verse 24 says—and “consider it” would be better translated “understand it thoroughly.” The latter days are this end time we are living in today. God said we would understand this thoroughly! Well, do we? Or do we have gaps in our knowledge, or little knowledge at all?

Jeremiah 22 has this prophecy for our day: “Thus saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word, And say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David …” (verses 1-2). God is instructing him how he must live if he is to sit on that throne.

“Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong …” (verse 3). Is that the way the Queen’s family has been living? Is that King Charles’s history?

“For if,” verse 4 begins—see, this is conditional, if you are to sit on David’s throne. “For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David ….” If you meet these conditions, then you will have a king sitting on the David’s throne. But, that did not happen. That is why the throne of David is no longer in Britain.

Of the word “sitting,” the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament says, “Literally, the text is ‘the place of sitting.’” This man can sit there if he meets the conditions. And God is talking to a king, not a queen.

Jeremiah’s prophecy continues, “And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons …. Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them” (verses 7, 9). Which “covenant” did they forsake? That is talking about the covenant God made with David regarding that throne! They were part of this covenant of David, and they forsook it!

Look how thoroughly the royal family has turned its back on the covenant of David. They have become enchanted with celebrity. They decided to remake the monarchy for the modern age. In my book The New Throne of David I quote the Spectator describing the “reality show” world of the modern royals, and concluding with the chilling question: “Was this the moment when it all started to go wrong?” They certainly have forsaken the covenant of David.

God has punished them and taken that throne away from them.

The Meaning of Marriage
Look back at Charles’s first marriage. The New York Times wrote this on July 2, 1981: “Lady Diana Spencer has decided that she will not promise at her wedding, four weeks from today, to obey Prince Charles. Queen Elizabeth ii, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and a long line of royal brides before them have included the word ‘obey’ in their wedding vows, as prescribed in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer dating from 1662. But Lady Diana has chosen to follow the new ritual of the Church of England, and she will promise in the ceremony at St. Paul’s cathedral only to ‘love him, comfort him, honor him, and keep him in sickness and health.’” But not “obey.”

Here is what one clergyman said about that: “Marriage is the kind of relationship where there should be two equal partners, and if there’s going to be a dominant partner, it won’t be settled by this oath. I think this is much more Christian.”

Does this man really know his Bible? Does he know what the God-ordained institution of marriage is all about?

Ephesians 5 has perhaps the Bible’s most important passage about marriage. It begins in verse 21: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Consider that first. People seem to think that if a woman is to obey her husband, he will be a tyrant who will abuse you all your life. That is not what this says at all. The Apostle Paul says you must submit yourselves one to another.

But then read verses 22-23: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife ….” Yes, the man is the head—so says your Bible. Is that Christian? That’s the only thing that is Christian! But few people accept that today. “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing” (verses 23-24).

Jesus Christ said we ought to live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4)—but it’s rare to hear anybody live by that scripture.

Paul continues, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it …. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself” (Ephesians 5:25, 28). That is no tyrant! This is the way God says the man must treat his wife—as his own body!

“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh” (verse 31).

Now, follow the astonishing statement Paul makes next. Apparently he has been discussing how to have a happy marriage, but that is not really his subject. His main subject is this: “This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband” (verses 32-33).

Paul is primarily talking about Jesus Christ’s marriage to His Church! The firstfruits who are obeying God today are preparing to marry Christ! Those called out before the Second Coming will marry Him and sit on that throne and help Christ rule the world and the universe forever! What a reward!

Practically speaking, we need to understand that marriage is a God-plane relationship. That is what Paul is telling us. It pictures a spectacular spiritual reality, and it must operate according to God’s law and God’s vision. It will never work any other way!

Did Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage work? I’m afraid it didn’t. And the whole world witnessed it. Why didn’t it work? These verses supply the answer. Other scriptures say the same thing (e.g. Titus 2:5; 1 Peter 3:1-6; Colossians 3:18).

Godly Family
Charles and Diana discarded God’s command for the wife to be subject to her husband. When Kate Middleton married Prince William, they followed that example. So too did Meghan Markle and Harry. Quite often there are a lot of serious problems in marriages like that.

Herbert W. Armstrong visited Prince Charles two times. When Charles married Diana, Mr. Armstrong said this in a public address: “I don’t know whether you noticed it or not, but the recent royal wedding in England—I was over there at the time—and in that wedding ceremony there was nothing that the wife had to obey the husband. That was all left out! Oh, it was going to be 50-50. Well, let’s watch and see whether it lasts or not. When you have 50-50, the wife is wearing the pants and is the boss. Someone has to be. Two can’t live together just 50-50. One has to be the leader over the other. But Isaiah 3:12 says the wife will end up being over the husband, and then the children would abuse the wife, because they don’t obey her. And you have a family that just falls apart in so many cases.”

Why won’t we listen to God? God is telling us how to bring our families together and put marriage on the God-plane! What a wonderful, beautiful blessing! What could be more important? That marriage typifies the Church’s marriage to Christ. And family is also a God-plane relationship. God wants you to do all you can to help your children and turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers (Malachi 4:6). When we follow God’s formula, it produces godly children. That family pictures the God Family, and all who will be born into that Family as they choose to obey God and live His way! What a wonderful, wonderful truth!

A New Throne of David
Britain’s royal family no longer represents the throne of David. God has established a new throne. When Jesus Christ returns very soon, that is the throne of David God the Father will give Him (Luke 1:32) and that He will rule from forever.

God establishing this new throne is an important transition to take place just before Christ returns.

God’s people are about to be born into the God Family. In a physical birth, the last part of active labor is referred to as “transition.” So God has a transition spiritually today. He has a new throne. We are in the pushing stage—the last stage in the birth of a miraculous child. What a beautiful picture!

The stone of destiny is a picture of Jesus Christ, sitting on David’s throne with His Bride at His side—those who have helped Him proclaim His truth during this period before His Second Coming. Together they are going to rule for a thousand years, and after that they will go on to rule all the universe under God the Father for eternity!

Things couldn't get any worse for Prince Harry, who sources say "is starting to see the big ugly picture" that is his marriage to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

In a new bombshell book, Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown, author Valentine Low paints the former Suits star as something of an egomaniac who forced Harry to go public with their romance before he was ever ready.

Their relationship is on thin ice.

According to the book, which is being serialised in The Times newspaper, "[Meghan] was saying, 'If you don't put out a statement confirming I'm your girlfriend, I'm going to break up with you.' Harry was in a panic. He was freaking out, saying, 'She's going to dump me.'"

It's a disturbing insight into the Sussexes' marriage, but sadly insiders say it's a normal occurrence between the two. Friends say this was the first of many times when Meghan, 41, would coerce Harry, 38, into doing something he didn't want but he's only now starting to recognise a pattern.

"He's already feeling shaky after being back in the family fold and seeing how much damage and hurt they've caused," says an insider, who notes Harry's anxiety is why he's desperately trying to "rework" his upcoming memoir – if his publishers allow it.

"The late Queen's funeral was a wake-up call for him and he's panicking that what he's written could be considered insensitive or far worse," explains the source, adding, "He's beginning to realise he's backed himself into a corner, and all these reminders about some of Meghan's behaviour are making him uncomfortable."

The Real Reason Why King Charles "Caused Argument" With Harry on Day of Queen's Death, Report Claims
The day of Queen Elizabeth's death was chaotic, to say the least. To the rest of the world, everything seemed to be happening so fast. After weeks of speculation surrounding her declining health, Kensington Palace released a somewhat cryptic statement surrounding her ill-health, and family members rushed to Scotland to say their final goodbyes. However, somewhere in the mix of things, there was confusion as to who exactly was invited to Balmoral with the family, with Harry and Meghan's team announcing that Meghan would be joining her husband in Scotland. Then, shortly after, another announcement was made that she would stay behind in London. Many people wondered what exactly happened on that day between Harry and his family. According to a new report, Charles did in fact cause an argument with his son that had some pretty severe repercussions.

King Charles will not attend climate summit on Truss advice

King Charles will not attend the climate change conference COP27, which is due to be held in Egypt next month, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

It was responding to a story in the Sunday Times which claimed Prime Minister Liz Truss had "ordered" the King not to attend.

The Palace said advice had been sought by the King and given by Ms Truss.

"With mutual friendship and respect there was agreement that the King would not attend," the Palace stated.

Before his accession to the throne last month, the King - then the Prince of Wales - had indicated he would attend the annual conference.

Royal correspondent Jonny Dymond said the BBC had put it to the Palace the King must be personally disappointed given his long decades of passionate environmental campaigning.

But the Palace responded that the idea the King was uncomfortable was not the case, and he was ever mindful of the sovereign's role to act on the government's advice.

Charles will not cool on climate action, say friends
Last November - as Prince Charles - the King travelled to Egypt with the then-government's blessing to urge the Egyptian administration on its efforts, meeting President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi during a planned visit.

In the past, the King has demonstrated his deep commitment to environmental issues and, as Prince of Wales, had a long history of campaigning to reduce the effects of climate change.

Only last year he made a speech at the COP26 opening ceremony in Glasgow, when the summit was hosted by the UK. The late Queen also gave a speech at the event, via video link.

Senior Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood said he hoped "common sense would prevail" and the King would be allowed to go Egypt.

He said in a tweet that King Charles was a "globally-respected voice" on the environment whose attendance would add "serious authority" to the British delegation.

At last year's COP26 conference, King Charles - or Prince Charles as he was then - was one of the star turns, delivering a passionate call for world leaders to adopt a "war-like footing" over climate change.

This year he'll have to keep his powder dry, after what's presented, on the surface at least, as a dispute-free agreement that he shouldn't go.

Although it's worth noting this is about not attending "in person", which might leave the door ajar for other virtual contributions.

There will inevitably be speculation that, below all the constitutional smoothing, this will have really disappointed the King. He has campaigned devotedly for decades, heart on sleeve, on such environmental issues.

And it could also raise the prospect of early tensions between a new King and a new PM.

But it's a case of different role, different rules, and the King has always known that as sovereign he would have to act within a different set of politically-neutral constraints.

Conservative Cabinet minister Simon Clarke said the decision for the King not to attend had been made "amicably, as far as I am aware".

"The suggestions this morning that he was ordered to stay away are simply not true," he told Times Radio. "It is the normal course of matters that this would be handled by the government rather than by the monarchy."

The Egyptian authorities say they hope to use their presidency of COP27 to urge the international community to act on pledges of support for developing countries to cope with the devastating impacts of climate change.

However, there has been criticism ahead of the summit. Human Rights Watch has said Egypt has severely curtailed the work of environmental groups. Officials in Cairo said the report was "misleading".

COP27, a United Nations event, is being held in the coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh from 8 to16 November.

Next week, King Charles will attend his first public engagements since the royal period of mourning came to an end, including a reception in Edinburgh for South Asian communities from across the UK and a visit to Dunfermline Abbey in Fife.
