The Chief Rabbi has urged the prime minister to let synagogues remain open during the latest lockdown, arguing there’s “no scientific rationale” for the decision.

Places of worship are due to be shut for a month from Thursday, except for private prayer. But in a marked change of tone from the lockdown earlier this year, a number of senior religious leaders, including Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, have said they “strongly disagree with the decision to suspend worship during this time”.


Writing to Boris Johnson and Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, the leaders of Orthodox Judaism, the Church of England and the Catholic church, along with Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Pentecostal representatives said, “scientific evidence shows that social solidarity and connectedness are key to people maintaining motivation to comply with COVID secure measures and to maintain good mental health.”

“There is no scientific rationale for suspension of Public Worship where it is compliant with the guidance that we have worked jointly with government to establish.”

The letter claimed that faith leaders had demonstrated places of worship can be “made safe from Covid transmission”, writing that there is “no scientific justification for the wholesale suspension of public worship.”

However Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis had previously said that it was “imperative” to close synagogues again, following Boris Johnson’s announcement on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, the Chief Rabbi explained that allowing synagogues to stay open for private prayer could tempt shul-goers to daven together, which would be a breach of coronavirus regulations and a “desecration of Hashem’s name”.

But the latest letter made the case for common worship benefiting the health and wellbeing of faith communities who care for others.

“Much has been made of the adverse impact on mental health of volunteer and paid carers during this pandemic. Common Worship is an important way of sustaining the wellbeing, and ability to serve, of people of faith who volunteer. The benefits of public worship are scientifically well attested”.

A number of United Synagogue rabbis had already decided to write to their local MPs, complaining about the government’s decision to close places of worship for organised services during the lockdown.

Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet of Mill Hill Synagogue, in his letter to Dr. Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon, said: “I am baffled that the government is insisting on limiting usage of places of worship once more. Having finally created a well-oiled-machine, to have to shut down again, doesn’t seem to conform to scientific evidence and will negatively impact the many members who benefit from this vital religious lifeline.”

The Federation of Synagogues, comprised of many member and affiliate synagogues and Jewish communities, has also written to Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, expressing their “concern” at the closing of places of worship for communal prayer.

The letter says: “It is our belief that our synagogues can continue to function as places of communal prayer without introducing any significant risk in transmission of the virus, by continuing to require congregants to wash their hands upon entering the premises, sit apart from each other and wear face masks.

Calling on the government to rethink their policy, the letter added: “We would like to impress upon the Government that for Orthodox Jews, communal prayer is indeed an essential activity.”

The Board of Deputies had previously asked the government for data on the spread of coronavirus to explain the decision to stop religious services in the new lockdown in England.

There have been 541 Jewish funerals carried out after contracting coronavirus, an increase of seven funerals from the previous week.

Senior Labour MPs on the left of the party have appealed for unity as they renewed their call for Jeremy Corbyn to be reinstated as a member.

Former shadow cabinet ministers Diane Abbott, John McDonnell and Richard Burgon made the plea after the ex-leader was suspended over his response to a damning anti-Semitism report.The Equality and Human Rights Commission found that the party broke equality law when Mr Corbyn was in charge, but he refused to fully accept the watchdog’s findings and said anti-Semitism had been “dramatically overstated for political reasons”.

Former shadow chancellor Mr McDonnell, addressing a virtual Stand With Corbyn rally organised by campaign group Momentum, appealed to members not to leave Labour or launch a “civil war”.

He said: “My appeal is for unity, for clarification that we are all on the same page when it comes to wanting to tackle anti-Semitism and the way that we do that is all of us, we stay in the party – this is our Labour Party.

“Secondly, we have lifted the suspension of Jeremy Corbyn. Thirdly, let’s agree across the whole party to launch a programme of anti-racist campaigning and tackling anti-Semitism wherever it rears its head.”

Ms Abbott, who served as shadow home secretary under Mr Corbyn, said it was “vital” that the former leader was reinstated and warned that his suspension would “not help us win the next election”.

And she said: “The priority right now for everyone in our party is to come together and successfully improve the way that Labour handles racism and anti-Semitism.”

Ex-shadow justice secretary Mr Burgon said infighting “serves no-one but the Tory government”, and former Cabinet Office minister Jon Trickett said he believed Mr Corbyn could be reinstated.

Their comments came after Len McCluskey, the boss of the Unite union, a major financial backer for Labour, warned the suspension was an “act of grave injustice” that could cause a split and doom the party to defeat.

But Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer insisted that there is “no reason for a civil war”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There is no reason for a civil war, there’s no reason to lean inwards, that is not what I want.

“I want to unite the party – that is the basis on which I ran my leadership campaign, I want to unite the party to stop the faction.”

Sir Keir said Mr Corbyn and his team “knew exactly” that he would warn that any suggestion the issue had been exaggerated could lead to expulsion.

“I’m deeply disappointed in that response from Jeremy Corbyn yesterday, not least because I spoke to him the night before the report to set out how I intended to deal with it,” Sir Keir said.

Mr Corbyn issued a statement to accuse the media and his political opponents of having overstated the scale of the problem and say “I do not accept all” of the EHRC findings.

The EHRC concluded the party was responsible for unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination and found evidence of “political interference” in the complaints process by Mr Corbyn’s office.

The former leader has said he will “strongly contest” the decision to suspend him pending an investigation, which also meant the Islington North MP had the Labour whip removed in Parliament.

Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family has said.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas, having been "unwell for some time", his son said.

His acting career spanned five decades and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.

Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

Jason Connery said his father "had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him" when he died overnight in Nassau. Much of Bond film Thunderball had been filmed there.

He said: "We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.

"A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."

His publicist Nancy Seltzer said: "There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended."

He leaves wife Micheline and sons Jason and Stephane.

Connery made the character of James Bond his own, blending ruthlessness with sardonic wit. Many critics didn't like it and some of the reviews were scathing. But the public did not agree.

The action scenes, sex and exotic locations were a winning formula.

In truth, his Bond is now a museum piece; the portrayal of women impossibly dated. The action scenes are still thrilling, but the sex too often bordered on the non-consensual.

Thankfully, its been a while since 007 slapped a woman on the backside and forced a kiss. But Connery's performance was of its time, enjoyed by millions of both sexes and gave the silver screen a 20th Century icon.

Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they were "devastated by the news" of his death.

They said: "He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words 'the name's Bond... James Bond'.

"He revolutionised the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him."

Sadiq Khan has warned the proposed expansion of the Congestion Charge would “split North London’s Jewish community in Hendon and Golders Green”.

The Mayor of London’s concerns come amid government proposals to extend a £15 charge to North and South Circular roads, in a bid to secure more funding for Transport for London (TFL).

The plans have led fears that synagogues such as Alyth in Golders Green could face a reduction in attendance.

North-west London Jewish communities also straddle the North Circular, separating Hendon to the north from Golders Green to the south. Extending the zone would impose a £15 payment on travelling between them.

Khan said it “would in essence split North London’s Jewish community in Hendon and Golders Green”, and would “have a devastating effect on London’s diverse communities, who are already suffering disproportionately as a result of coronavirus.”

“It is simply wrong to hit four million more people with additional costs at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet, and I have made clear to ministers that I will not agree to these draconian terms.”

“TfL’s financial issues are solely as a result of the pandemic. The Government must not punish Londoners for doing the right thing to tackle Covid-19, and should instead come back to the table with a revised plan which is right not only for our city but our country too.”

Leeds University has launched an investigation after a Palestinian terrorist  addressed students, advocating for “armed struggle” as a means of resistance.

Leila Khaled, who hijacked two international flights for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), spoke to students at a virtual event on Friday.

During the Zoom event, as part of the Apartheid Off Campus campaign, promoted by the University of Leeds Palestine Solidarity Group, Khaled told students that Palestinians are “not afraid of struggle”.
She added: “We have used all means of struggle and we are still determined to continue using all means of struggle including armed struggle.”

Following Khaled’s address, Adam Saeed, the student chair of the meeting, told attendees: “I think we can all be inspired by this”.

He said: “Everything that she said about international law is true, it doesn’t mean that anyone in this meeting endorses or encourages anyone to take arms, what it means is that under international law people are entitled to resist occupation in any means they see fit.”

The event had originally been denied permission by Leeds university itself, who said organisers had not followed protocol or provided sufficient notice, especially about Leila Khaled’s appearance. But Leeds Palestine Solidarity Group said they believed “Leila Khaled deserves a platform”.

A joint University of Leeds and Leeds University Union (LUU) statement said: “We were disappointed that the event organisers chose to proceed without our permission. We are investigating this matter further.”

Khaled’s first airline hijacking was in 1969, when a flight from Rome to Tel Aviv was forced to divert to Damascus. She had extensive plastic surgery to prevent anyone from recognising her when she carried out her second hijack the following year, on an El Al flight from Amsterdam to New York City.

The plane landed at Heathrow where she was arrested and held for 28 days, before being released by then prime minister, Edward Heath, in exchange for western hostages held by the PFLP.

Leeds Jewish Society and the Union of Jewish Students said they are “extremely disturbed and shocked” that the event took place.

“This event went ahead despite it being shut down by Zoom, on the basis that they would have been providing a platform for a terrorist,” they said.

Calling on the university and the students’ union to take action, they added: “This event also included academics and students at the University, all being complicit in sharing this platform. It is imperative that Jewish students are able to access academic spaces, both virtual and physical, free of hate and prejudice.”

Professor James Dickins, from the university’s Arabic department, who has previously signed a letter claiming the IHRA definition of antisemitism conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism, attended the event and gave a speech to students following Khaled’s address.


Board of Deputies Vice President Amanda Bowman has condemned the event, saying: “That a student event took place at Leeds with Leila Khaled is simply unacceptable. Jewish students and academics should have access to academic spaces free of hate, without platforms being shared with someone who advocates for ‘armed struggle’. It is right that the University is investigating this matter further.”

Holocaust survivor and British weightlifting hero Sir Ben Helfgott has been honoured with a Pride of Britain award for five decades of tireless work in passing on the lessons of the Nazi era and fighting for those who lived through the horrors.

Poland-born Sir Ben – whose parents and younger sister were killed in the Shoah – survived Buchenwald and was liberated from Theresienstadt before being brought to the UK aged just 15.


Remarkably, just eleven years later, Sir Ben – who turns 91 next month – captained the British weightlifting team at the 1956 Olympics, a feat he repeated four years later.

He is recognised alongside Marcus Rashford and other lesser known heroes at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, whose format has been revamped this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of the usual glittering dinner in central London, a host of celebrities have been surprising winners around the country over the last few weeks.

Sir Ben – who has held positions in almost every major Holocaust remembrance and education organisation – will be seen by a TV audience of millions next Sunday receiving the famous trophy from Stephen Fry, surrounded by his wife Arza, three sons and five of his grandchildren.

“You shouldn’t have to be Jewish or to have a relatives who perished in the Holocaust yourself to be stunned by characters like Ben Helfgott, though of course it does add an extra element of admiration and appreciation,” said the author and television presenter after making the presentation at the Holocaust memorial in Hyde Park earlier this month.

“His actions speak for all humanity however. His quiet determination to ensure that the unspeakable wickedness and evil of what happened has been inspirational. Against indifference, denial and doubt he has raised a literal and figurative memorial wall that honours the victims and helps push back against the possibility that such horrors might be allowed to happen again.”

It was so wonderful to see his large family standing there beaming with pride and of course I couldn’t help but think “if he hadn’t survived … none of them would be there.”

He would say he had survived because he was lucky, but it was also because he was strong. Literally strong – heavens, the man went on to become an Olympic weightlifter! It’s wonderful thing that Pride of Britain has recognised him.”

He added: “In this time of fear, distress, doubt and anxiety the quiet, unassuming strength of a man like Sir Ben Helfgott reminds us that the human spirit can – like grass through concrete – win through.”

In 1963, Sir Ben helped to set up the ’45 Aid Society to assist the more than 700 children who arrived with him in the UK after the War, leading the organisation for nearly half a century until 2016.

He has also made it his mission to ensure younger generations know about what happened in order that history isn’t repeated. He has served as president of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and was a member of David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission which recommended the creation of a national Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre in London.

Sir Ben said he was “honoured” to receive the “wholly unexpected award”, telling Jewish News: “I have spent much of my life ensuring the victims of the Holocaust are remembered, and the lessons of those times are taught. I hope this prestigious award will help to spread that important message a little further.”

Describing Sir Ben as “a hero”, Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock pointed out he was just six stone at the time of his liberation.

“Yet he went on not only to rebuild his life here in Britain, but to captain the British Olympic weightlifting team. Ben has dedicated his life to ensuring that the past is never forgotten, campaigning to ensure that Holocaust education and remembrance will always be a cornerstone of British society.”

“I have spent much of my life ensuring the victims of the Holocaust are remembered, and the lessons of those times are taught. I hope this prestigious award will help to spread that important message a little further.

Sir Ben Helfgott is simply remarkable – the epitome of determination, passion and drive; a visionary leader and a force for good. He is my hero and this Pride of Britain lifetime achievement award could not be more richly deserved.”

Jewish News presented Sir Ben – who was knighted last year – with a lifetime achievement award in 2012 and he has subsequently received such accolades from HET and Limmud FSU.

Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative Party parliamentarian in the U.K., recently delivered a strong condemnation of the “anti-capitalist” Black Lives Matter movement as well as critical race theory, both of which she argued have no place in the British educational curriculum.

“What we are against is the teaching of contested political ideas as if they are accepted fact,” she said during an impassioned speech on the floor of the House of Commons. “We don’t do this with communism, we don’t do this with socialism, we don’t do it with capitalism. And I want to speak about a dangerous trend in race relations that has come far too close to home to my life, and it’s the promotion of critical race theory.”


She went on to explain that the government must “stand unequivocally against critical race theory,” a far-left doctrine she described as “an ideology that sees my blackness as victimhood and their whiteness as oppression.”
In mid-September, President Donald Trump stepped in to prevent the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies from teaching staffers about critical race theory.

The UK’s Metro on Thursday published a sob story entitled “I stopped wearing my hijab because I was scared for my life,” all about “Islamophobia” in the Sceptered Isle. Sumaiya Ahmed, who poses, hijabless but demure, in a photo accompanying the article, complains: “You’d think growing up in a predominantly Asian area in London would mean not having to deal with racism and Islamophobia. But as a British-Bangladeshi Muslim, I can say racism in this city runs deep.”

Racism? What race is Islam again? What race is wearing the hijab? In any case, this article proceeds from the assumption that women who wear hijabs in the UK (and the US) are routinely subjected to discrimination and harassment, and that Britons (and Americans) consequently need this reminder that decent folk treat hijabis with respect. Hijabis should indeed be treated with respect, like everyone else, but it is false that they are routinely disrespected in this country.

In fact, many of the most celebrated of the cases claiming this turned out to have been faked by the victims themselves. In one such incident, an eleven-year-old girl in Toronto made international headlines with her claim that a man had followed her and cut her hijab with scissors. After an investigation, police concluded that the attack never happened. Likewise, Yasmin Seweid, a Muslim teen who claimed in December 2016 that Trump supporters on a New York subway tore off her hijab and no one in the packed subway car helped her. She, too, gained international media attention, and she, too, made up the whole thing. Shortly before that, a hijab-wearing Muslim student at San Diego State University also falsely claimed that she was assaulted by Trump supporters. In July 2017, a Muslim in Britain falsely claimed that a man had pulled off her hijab in a “race hate attack.” In November 2016, a University of Michigan Muslim student claimed she was “accosted by a white man who told her to remove her hijab or he would set her ablaze with a cigarette lighter.” She also fabricated the whole event. And there are many others of this kind.

The hijab symbolizes the subjugation of women in Islam. Women are required to wear the hijab according to Islamic law because it is their responsibility to remove temptation from men. If men are tempted anyway and they end up being sexually assaulted or raped, it’s their fault. Because the hijab is an important part of a woman’s responsibility under Sharia, many women have been brutalized and even killed for not wearing it. Aqsa Parvez’s Muslim father choked her to death with her hijab after she refused to wear it. Amina Muse Ali was a Christian woman in Somalia whom Muslims murdered because she wasn’t wearing a hijab. 40 women were murdered in Iraq in 2007 for not wearing the hijab. Alya Al-Safar’s Muslim cousin threatened to kill her and harm her family because she stopped wearing the hijab in Britain. Amira Osman Hamid faced whipping in Sudan for refusing to wear the hijab. An Egyptian girl, also named Amira, committed suicide after being brutalized by her family for refusing to wear the hijab. Muslim and non-Muslim teachers at the Islamic College of South Australia were told they had to wear the hijab or be fired. Women in Chechnya were police shot with paintballs because they weren’t wearing hijab. Other women in Chechnya were threatened by men with automatic rifles for not wearing hijab.

Elementary school teachers in Tunisia were threatened with death for not wearing hijab. Syrian schoolgirls were forbidden to go to school unless they wore hijab. Women in Gaza were forced by Hamas to wear hijab. Women in London were threatened with murder by Muslim thugs if they didn’t wear hijab. An anonymous young Muslim woman doffed her hijab outside her home and started living a double life in fear of her parents. Fifteen girls in Saudi Arabia were killed when the religious police wouldn’t let them leave their burning school building because they had taken off their hijabs in their all-female environment. A girl in Italy had her head shaved by her mother for not wearing hijab.

Other women and girls have been killed or threatened, or live in fear for daring not to wear the hijab.

Women in Iran continue to protest against the Islamic regime by daring to take off their hijabs, despite the fact that they face heavy prison sentences for doing so.

But where is the weepy article in the UK’s Metro about the many victims of hijab? Who is standing with them?

Actress Maureen Lipman will reportedly be made a dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. The 74-year-old Jewish actress will be recognised for services to charity and the arts following her 50-year career in TV and film, according to The Times.
Lipman, who was made a CBE in 1999, made one of her early big screen appearances in 1968 film Up The Junction, starring alongside Dennis Waterman and Suzy Kendall.
She played the title character’s mother in Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning 2002 drama The Pianist. Lipman is currently starring in Coronation Street as Evelyn Plummer.

The City of David is Israel’s most important archaeological site. The BBC is furious about it. Look at their absurd accusations and lies against Israel.
The City of David is Real – and Jewish
This is just absurd. Is the BBC supposed to cover the news and the truth, or are they supposed to push an agenda and spread lies about Israel? Well, it is obvious which path they have chosen. There is no journalism in what they shared. As the video points out, their entire story is anti-Israel propaganda. The City of David is a Jewish archaeological site that brings the Bible and Jewish history to life. There is hardcore, tangible evidence that this area has belonged to the Jewish nation for thousands of years.

But the BBC is acting as if the Jews stole it from the “Palestinians.” They are promoting the “Palestinian” narrative and all the lies that come along with it.

3,000 Years Old
The Jewish connection to the City of David is thousands of years old. But the BBC, of course, did not mention that. They also did not mention any of the truth of the legality of homes in that area.

What DID the BBC mention? That they are angry that an Israeli gave money to a JEWISH archaeology site. That the “Palestinians” claim they are being kicked out of their homes. Prime Minister Boris Johnson reflected on the “disproportionate losses” in the community during the pandemic, closures of synagogues and cancelled simchas – as he wished British Jews a happy new year.
Delivering his Rosh Hashanah message to the community, he said the sound of the shofar would “signal not just the arrival of a new year, but also the end of one that many would like to forget.”
In a year dominated by coronavirus, which has caused the deaths of more than 500 members of the community – and over 40,000 across the country, he said the virus “for reasons we still don’t fully understand, has hit Jews of Britain particularly hard.”

And the disproportionate losses you have suffered have been compounded by the necessary privations of lockdown.”

The BBC tried to “de-voice” the Rule Britannia hymn on the basis, apparently, of allusions to this countries slavery history. Of course, using Covid19 as an additional cover-story justification.

Slavery, YES indeed, but brother, didn’t the BBC get it wrong as to “WHICH” slavery….

In the 17th century the seas around Britain were ruled by North African Muslim Slavers. They stopped British ships and carried off the crews to be sold as slaves in Algiers and Tripoli.

The situation became so bad that fishermen from Devon and Cornwall wouldn’t put out to sea in case they were captured by North African Slave Traders.

Between 1609 and 1616, 466 British ships were captured by Slave Traders in the Bristol channel, English Channel, Irish Sea and North Atlantic, and the crews were sold into slavery.

In 1625 a raiding party landed at Mount’s Bay in Cornwall and 60 people who had taken refuge in a local church were dragged out, loaded up and taken off to Africa to be sold as slaves.

On 12 August 1625 the Mayor of Plymouth wrote to London for military help after 27 ships had been seized by North African Muslim Slave Traders in just 10 days. In 1645, 240 people were seized as slaves in Cornwall.

The situation only began to change after the end of the English Civil War when the Navy (future Royal Navy) started building up under Oliver Cromwell. By 1700, North African Slavers generally knew better than to bother the British Isles in the search for slaves because of the Royal Navy.

It was a triumph that Britain was finally able to control its own coastal waters. And it was in commemoration of this that in 1740, James Thompson wrote ‘Rule Britannia’. It is a hymn of thanksgiving rather than a proclamation of aggressive Nationalism.

Published today, ‘Left Out: The Inside Story of Labour Under Corbyn’ by Gabriel Pogrund and Patrick Maguire reveals the inside story of how Jeremy Corbyn led his party to one of the worst election defeats in British political history and into the abyss of antisemitism. In this exclusive extract, the authors describe how Corbyn was personally affected by accusations of being an anti-Jewish racist:

On 13 August 2018, Benjamin Netanyahu waded in to Labour’s antisemitism row. He tweeted: “The laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorists who perpetrated the Munich massacre and his comparison of Israel to the Nazis deserves unequivocal condemnation from everyone – left, right, and everything in between.” Corbyn responded: “What deserves unequivocal condemnation is the killing of over 160 Palestinian protesters in Gaza by Israeli forces since March, including dozens of children.”


But Labour was preparing to accept the IHRA definition in full. It had no choice but to do so. More archive footage emerged on 23 August, in which Corbyn described two British Jews who had heckled a speech by the Palestinian Authority’s envoy to the UK as “Zionists”, and said: ‘They clearly have two problems. One is that they don’t want to study history, and secondly, having lived in this country for a very long time, probably all their lives, don’t understand English irony.” To his critics, the speech was yet more evidence that Corbyn – and not just those he associated with – had a problem. He insisted that he had used the word Zionist “in the accurate political sense”.

Rabbi Lord Sacks did not agree. He described the remarks as the most offensive by a British politician since Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of Blood” speech. Corbyn’s office dismissed the comparison as “absurd and  offensive”. Corbyn took it  badly.

According to aides, he withdrew.

“He just couldn’t deal with it,” said one. “So he just behaved in a way that made him seem like he didn’t care, and he 100 percent cares – he just looked like he didn’t.’

To the Leader of the Opposition’s Office it appeared he had lost sight of his responsibilities as an existential funk set in.

“He couldn’t see he was the leader of a political party any more, he had a responsibility to reach out and represent people and to reassure people. It was just silence and mistakes.”

Corbyn was physically present but emotionally absent. His office longed for the return of    2017 Jeremy”. To see him struggle under the weight of the accusation that he, too, was capable of indulging racism was almost too much to bear. That there were no easy options did not help either.  Even if he and his office acted decisively, they were resigned to the fact that the attacks – from the press, his MPs and the Conservatives – would have continued.

Conspiracy theorist David Icke, who believes the world is run by giant shape-shifting reptiles, has addressed hundreds of anti-lockdown protesters in Trafalgar Square.

The former football commentator, who is banned from Australia for Holocaust denial, recently faced accusations of antisemitism from anti-racism and Jewish groups.


In May the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH)  unveiled a report  alleging Icke is spreading “dangerous misinformation” about Covid-19, including the claim that “Sabbatian Frankists” and the Rothschilds are behind, or helped plan, the outbreak.

He also believes Israel is using the pandemic to “test its technology”.

Also among those present at the “Unite for Freedom” rally on Saturday were the brother of the former Labour Party leader, Piers Corbyn.

Prior to the demonstration, in which protesters displayed anti-mask and anti-vaccination placards, police “strongly advised” people to avoid large gatherings for their own safety. “We are still in the middle of a global pandemic,” it said. “If you attend a gathering of more than 30 people, you may be committing an offence, which is punishable by a fine. We all need to continue to do our part to prevent the spread of the virus.”

Icke’s 1995 book, And the Truth Shall Set You Free, focused on a global conspiracy by “Rothschilds and Rockefellers” and contained a chapter questioning aspects of the Holocaust and criticising society for suppressing “alternative information to the official line of the Second World War.”

Imagine your grandfather had shared stories of how he fought with the resistance during WWII in Poland, France, Greece, what was then Czechoslovakia, and what was then Yugoslavia.

You are very proud of your grandfather for what he did in helping stop the Third Reich, the Nazis, from gaining control of all of Europe, even all of the world.

One summer, you plan a trip to Europe to visit the same places and towns in Poland, France, and Greece he had talked about .

And since you are in Europe, and since it has always been your dream to visit some day, you plan to stop off in Ireland as you had been reading all the great things promoted about Ireland.

You arrive in Europe and everywhere you look every where you visit in Poland, France, and Greece there are memorials honoring their war-dead and resistance fighters who fought bravely against the Nazis. Several locations even honor the American and English troops who helped free them.

You read about their battles and can even imagine your grandfather with them dodging bullets, buried in mud, freezing in the winter, seeing friends die around him, discovering dead bodies of adults and children who obviously were not soldiers and had been obviously tortured.

You arrive to Ireland, all filled with respect, humility, and honor for your grandfather, and believing Ireland must have been of some assistance as well.

It is a statue honoring Seán Russell — you had read earlier that in the summer of 1938 Seán become the IRA chief of staff and put into motion a bombing campaign of England and forged links with Nazi Germany intelligence.

Sure you knew not everyone would be against the Nazis – but a statue honoring a person who favored them?

No one is protesting its presence; in fact, everyone is honoring its presence.

Yet the locals would probably laugh at you if you questioned the presence of this statue – after all, they permitted it to be there, did they not?

And you also discover it is not just a local “thing” but just about all of Ireland honors Mr. Russell… as well as other IRA members that supported and sheltered the Nazis.

You suddenly feel you landed somewhere other than Ireland and cannot believe that Ireland would have had this level of contempt for the rest of Europe – and your grandfather – by mocking their efforts and dead of WWII by recently erecting this pathetic statue.

You have no conclusion to come to but that everything your grandfather, the resistance fighters, stood for in the form of Liberty is being entirely disrespected, even mocked.

Just 2 of nearly 200 wanted Nazis who found either safe passage or safety with the help of the Irish Government or connected authorities organisations.

Flanagan’s intervention ensured those children were gassed in the concentration camps.

Flanagan was re-elected the following year with an increased majority and later served in the 1970’s Government of Charles Haughey as Minister of Defence.

This piece of Irish filth was made Father of the Dail from 1977 to 1987, such was the Irish contempt for all those who suffered under the Nazis.

Not one Irish Parliamentarian interjected on behalf of those children…

Not one.

They never allowed the Allies use of Irish ports but did allow Nazis full diplomatic status and the ability to mix within Ireland’s political elite, openly gaining knowledge of Ireland’s strategy.

To ensure Irish bets were hedged in the event of a Nazi victory, details of Ireland’s few Jews were submitted at the Nazis Wannsee conference near Berlin in January 1942.

Undoubtedly, antisemitism has been a key component of Irish Nationalism since its origination in the early 20th century, through WW2 and more recently via support for Palestinian terrorists…

when such memorials are flaunted with so little respect
for those who sacrificed everything in order to achieve Europe’s freedom –
including the ungrateful Irish?

The current, proposed Irish legislation which would criminalize those within the Republic of Ireland from purchasing products originating from proscribed areas of Israel has exposed and created a potentially farcical situation.

This 1930’s National Socialist type legislation selectively aimed at the only Jewish State in the world, 70-years after the holocaust is a truly racist endeavour and according to legal experts may have other frightening consequences if enacted.

Professor Eugene Kontorovich, of the Northwestern University School of Law, elegantly explains how the proposed legislation may threaten the religious freedom of Ireland.

This bizarre possibility is an unintended consequence of the absurdity of the Irish Parliament’s grotesque antisemitism camouflaged as being consistent with their policy of supporting Palestinian human rights against the Israeli ”occupying oppressor.”

If this were truly the case then Russia, Syria, Iran, Jordan, Iraq, and Pakistan would similarly be subject to this legislation given their history of oppression and atrocities conducted against Palestinians.

Ignorance rules within Ireland’s Parliament as no Irish Parliamentarian has ever raised the atrocities committed by these Nations against the Palestinians.

Clearly the Irish Prime Minister is a worried man and so he should be which is why, quite incredibly, he found the time to travel to the USA during the most domestically important time of his political career given Ireland’s role with the Brexit negotiations.

Notwithstanding the possible consequences of sanctions being imposed on Ireland by the USA, should this legislation be passed, but opposition to this nauseating bill is gaining momentum not only within Europe but globally as challenges are taking the form of a counter boycott.

Literally thousands of ordinary consumers, so disgusted with the behaviour and open antisemitism of the lower house of the Irish Parliament, are checking labels on consumer products, foods, drinks and pharmaceuticals and if they are made, manufactured or produced in the Republic of Ireland they are going back on the shelves. The Facebook and Twitter networks are full of folk cancelling vacations and trips to the Emerald Isle and clearly pressure is mounting.

Naturally it is too early to calculate the effect on Ireland’s gross domestic product but clearly the opposition momentum is increasing and may be financially damaging as well as highly embarrassing for Ireland, which likes to portray itself as being a harmed rather than harmful nation – the historical victim rather than the abuser.

Given the role immigrants from Ireland played in the colonisation, land stealing, starvation, and genocide of the indigenous tribes of North America, the Irish must be pleased that they have avoided forensic analysis of this unpalatable part of their history.

Britain shamefully joins EU to denounce Israel’s plans to build near Jerusalem
Britain along with fourteen other European countries have again denounced Israel’s plans to advance construction plans in areas near Jerusalem, despite it being the capital of Israel and the Jewish people.

The countries and the EU expressed their “grave concerns regarding the advancement of settlement construction in Givat Hamatos and potentially in the E1 area” in a so-called démarche filed with Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

It was their second protest letter on the matter since May.

The countries claim that “Settlements are illegal under International Humanitarian Law” and that “any further settlement construction in this strategically sensitive area will have a devastating impact on a contiguous Palestinian State, as well as severely undermining the possibility of a negotiated two-state solution in line with internationally agreed parameters.”

Israel has legal authority over the entire land of Israel, including the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), thanks to international law and international treaties which are ratified and agreed upon by all of the nations involved in this.

Each one of these nations condemning Israel is a member of the United Nations and has agreed to adhere to the UN Charter. This includes Article 80, which specifically mentions Israel’s claim to the land of Israel including Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) as agreed upon in the San Remo Resolution and the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine which were adopted by the United Nations.

Let’s be very clear. International law is on the side of Israel.

Israel and the Jewish people own the land of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, and it is actually against the UN Charter and international law for these nations to be dictating the borders of another sovereign state.

Furthermore, the EU has funded real illegal building within the Palestinian territories and they continue to fund the Palestinian Authority which pays salaries to terrorists who attack Israel. Terrorism against Israel is illegal under international law.

It is time Britain and the EU got on the right side of this conflict and stood with the Jewish people against those who are trying to wipe them out.

Harry and Meghan will never resume official roles following the bombshell biography laying bare their rift with the Royal Family.

The couple have 'torpedoed' any chance of creating a new position with the help of the Queen and senior royals when their 'trial period' in the US ends, sources believe.

The book, which reveals their soured relationship with the monarchy in excruciating detail, is likely to scupper any hopes of renegotiating their royal duties when 'Megxit' is reviewed.

The revelations will also harm efforts to repair their rift with Harry's brother William and sister-in-law Kate, it is feared. 

A royal household source said: 'The door will always be open to them as much-loved members of the family. 

'But it's hard to see how they can now salvage the new role they wanted as 'hybrid' royals, running commercial careers alongside royal duties from the US.'

Another source told the Mail: 'The review period has not yet been discussed but it doesn't seem if there is any way of going back now. Some very private family matters have now been aired in public, seemingly with their blessing. That will be hurtful.'

One senior figure added: 'Given the state of the world this just seems so ill-timed. The Sussexes need to move on.'

Harry and Meghan have publicly denied giving an interview to the authors of Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, or of 'contributing' to the book. But their statement failed to address whether they had given permission for their closest friends, staff and associates from collaborating with it.

Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand say they have written the book with the 'participation of those closest to the couple' and boasted of having access to Harry and Meghan's personal and professional 'inner circle'. Insiders firmly believe that would only have happened with the couple's permission, tacit or otherwise.

Several specific incidents, including details of the sacking of Archie's night nurse and a private lunch Harry had with the Queen, which have featured in publicity for the book, would also have largely been known only to Harry and Meghan.

The book, serialised in the Times and Sunday Times, has detailed the increasingly bitter relationship between Harry and William, as well as the rollercoaster romance that saw the couple declare 'I love you' within three months. 

It claims:

Harry was so entranced by Meghan he convinced himself she was the woman who he would marry after only their second date.
Meghan used to tip off the paparazzi when working as an actress in Canada, despite her later going on to claim she didn't understand the 'tabloid culture'.
Meghan's friends claimed she endured prejudice from the royal household, with a senior staff member overheard telling a colleague: 'There's just something about her I just don't trust.'
Harry believed William was a 'snob' for urging him not to rush into his relationship with Meghan, worrying his brother was being 'blindsided by lust'. The brothers have barely spoken since.
Meghan was 'disappointed' that Kate did not welcome her into the family and found her frosty.
One senior royal referred to the ex-actress as 'Harry's showgirl'.
Harry felt 'unprotected' by his family and disparaged within palace walls for being 'too sensitive and outspoken'.

While the biography is short on new detail, it offers a fascinating take on events over the last two years that have rocked the Royal Family from Harry and Meghan's perspective. And their resentment is all too clear for the world to see.

Royal insiders believe the 'bitterness' and 'score settling' that characterise the book make a mockery of the Queen's warm words when she gave them her blessing to seek a new life in North America, but deliberately 'left the door ajar' by saying they would review arrangements in January next year. The couple have, of course, insisted on keeping on their Windsor home, Frogmore Cottage, as a UK base when their spend time here with their son, Archie, who hasn't returned since last November.

Two further sources said the biography – dubbed the 'gospel according to Harry and Meghan' – had made the couple look 'irrelevant', particularly coming out at the height of the global Covid crisis.

'The world has moved on as a result of the pandemic and the Royal Family have had to as well,' said one.

'This book has nothing new, frankly, friends have just presented events through a certain lens. People normally realise that actually it's a lot more nuanced and finely balanced than that.

'There are far more important things going on in the world, is the general view at the palace.'

The other source added: 'No one is angry. It was all to be expected. But it is hoped they have got whatever they want to get off their chests now, move on and be happy with their lives.

'People are just all too familiar with this and nobody wins. They seem to be fighting invisible enemies here, there and everywhere.'

Prince Harry was the first to say 'I love you' in his relationship with Meghan Markle, with friends revealing the couple were 'immediately obsessed' with each other, according to the latest extract of a bombshell biography.  

The couple felt a 'palpable attraction' after their first date at Dean Street Townhouse in Soho, London, with Harry reportedly left in a 'trance' and Meghan telling friends 'this could have legs'.

Harry had a beer, while Meghan drank a martini as they discussed their work, so engrossed with each other that their nibbles lay neglected.

On that first date, which lasted three hours, Harry talked about his charity work and many trips to Africa, finding a joint passion for wanting to 'make change for good' with Meghan, helping to form a bond between them. 

They didn't kiss on that first night, though sources said they were 'in their own little world' and made plans to meet again soon.  

That meeting was the very next night, at the same venue, according to the biography Finding Freedom, written by authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

The writers say they have spoken to more than 100 sources including 'close friends of Harry and Meghan's, royal aides and palace staff (past and present)', with all the information in the book having 'at least two sources.'

In the latest extract, they delved deep into the story of how Harry and Meghan became a couple, their first dates, her first visit to Kensington Palace and how Harry said 'I love you' just three months into their relationship, to which Meghan quickly responded with 'I love you, too'. 

The couple connected almost instantly, friends said, with their second date, also at Dean Street Townhouse in Soho, taking place the day after their first.  

They enjoyed a romantic dinner, with staff taking great pains to ensure their privacy, whisking them in through a staff entrance usually used to bring in fish discreetly. 

They chatted throughout the night, with Harry returning to Kensington Palace alone, though he admitted to friends afterwards that Meghan was 'ticking every box'.

They tried to hide their romance, though Meghan took to Instagram to share a post containing a photo of a Love Hearts candy with the inscription 'Kiss Me' and the caption 'Lovehearts in #London'. She also followed Prince Harry's private account. 

Just one night after date number two, Meghan was taken to Kensington Palace in a shroud of secrecy, where Harry tried to impress her with tales about his work and life, which he admitted was a 'little mad'. 

Just six weeks later, Harry told her that he wanted to take her on a trip, asking Meghan to fly to London. 

She flew in from Toronto, spent a night with Harry at Kensington Palace, before the couple flew to Johannesburg the next morning.  

From there, they flew on a private airplane to Maun International Airport before heading to Okavango Delta — a stunning 5,800 square mile wetland in Botswana's safari country. 

They stayed for most of the trip in one of the £1,529-a-night deluxe tents. 

A friend said: 'She came back smiling and just completely spellbound.'

They enjoyed the trip so much that they would have 'happily spent the entire summer there together', if not for there obligations back home. 

Meghan also opened up about the closeness she felt with Harry. 

'I've never felt that safe,' Meghan told her friend, 'that close to someone in such a short amount of time.'

After that, they regularly enjoyed clandestine meet-ups, Harry taking commercial flights to Toronto to see her.

The Botswana trip, technically only their third date, served as a 'speed-up' for their relationship, friends claimed. 

'By then,' a friend said, 'they were each already dancing around the idea that this just may be a for ever thing.'

Meghan was all in, heedless of warnings from confidants about the scrutiny that comes with being a royal spouse.  

It took just three months for Harry to say 'I love you', though Meghan was swift to reply.   

The couple kept a low profile in the early months, striving to keep their relationship out of the press. 

However, Harry was soon noticed in Meghan's neighbourhood, the biography claims, his visits becoming an open secret with royal minders sitting in black SUVs eating burritos.    

In October, while enjoying a trip to Toronto, Harry was informed by one of his aides that a tabloid was set to reveal his relationship with Meghan. 

The aide, and several others from the palace, urged Harry to come home, citing his minimal security and the fact that he would soon be besieged by photographers. 

But Harry refused to budge.     

The news came out the following day, with Meghan disappointed, according to the biography, though she was relieved not to have to keep lying to friends about her trips to London.  

Harry had warned Meghan that their relationship coming out was 'inevitable' and said he wanted to 'make the most of the time they had', though Meghan still admitted to being surprised by the instant attention. 

Within 24 hours, Meghan received 100 messages from people she hadn't spoken to in months or even years, all asking about the news.  

A short time later, a photographer from an LA-based photo agency scaled the fence into her back garden and waited for Meghan by her car, hoping to get a picture before she headed out to run errands. 

Meghan was terrified and called the police. 'This is how it's always going to be, isn't it?' she said to a friend. 

Social media also become a hell for Meghan, some posting racist messages branding her a 'n*****' or a 'mutt'.

The horrific messages left Harry furious, Meghan's experience serving as something of an introduction to racism for the prince. 

In fact, friends believe Meghan's experience with race and the biases Harry realised she had to deal with, led him to fallouts with his own circle of friends.

When questioned his new relationship, and whether she was 'suitable', it left him wondering if race or class played a part. 

He immediately cut ties with an old friend who disparaged Meghan and her Hollywood background. 

Willing to confront his close friends, the prince was happy to engage in an all-out war with the press.   

 When a tabloid published a set of unflattering photos showing Meghan's mother Doria Ragland on her way to the laundromat, pushing the narrative of a struggling woman in a rough part of LA, Meghan remained silent publicly, though she was in tears in truth. 

This pushed Harry into protecting her and he decided to make an official statement. 

However, the statement clashed with his father Prince Charles' tour in the Middle East, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall having just arrived in Bahrain to meet the country's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa. 

It was a critical moment that had been in the works for months and a statement from Kensington Palace condemning the press while confirming Harry's new girlfriend would all but eliminate coverage of Prince Charles's tour.

Despite this, the palace decided to go ahead with the statement, much of it drafted by Harry himself. 

His father only learnt of the statement 20 minutes before it was released and, unsurprisingly, it soon dominated the news cycle. 

Prince Charles and his team were left crushed and disappointed, though Charles also understood the intervention was a necessary one. 

However, the episode only served to prove that Harry felt the need to prioritise the woman he loved over duty to the royal family.

Prince Harry may have proposed to Meghan Markle three months before their official announcement, a bombshell biography detailing the Sussexes' dramatic departure from royal life has revealed.

According to Finding Freedom, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 'became secretly engaged in August 2017'.

That same month, the pair took a trip to Botswana where they are said to have celebrated both Meghan's 36th birthday and their first year as a couple.

During their engagement interview in November 2017, Prince Harry said he popped the question 'earlier this month' while the couple were 'roasting chicken' on a 'cosy night'.

In the biography, written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, a source says Prince William tried to 'make sure that Harry wasn't blindsided by lust' in his relationship with Meghan shortly before they got engaged that August. 

According to the book, which is being serialised by The Times and The Sunday Times, Harry took offence when William told him: 'Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.'

Harry is said to have considered the choice of the words 'this girl' to be condescending.

In their 2018 engagement interview, Harry recalled how he 'convinced' Meghan to fly out to Botswana to join him on a trip and said they spent a romantic five days camping out under the stars.

'It was I think about three, maybe four weeks [after their first date] that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana,' he said at the time.

'And we, we camped out with each other under the stars, we spent, she came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.'

The country has a special significance for Prince Harry, who first visited Botswana shortly after his mother Princess Diana's death, when he travelled there with his brother and father.

Harry fell in love with the country on that first trip and has since returned regularly, getting increasingly involved with wildlife conservation efforts in Botswana.  

When it came to finding the perfect engagement ring for Meghan, Harry even chose to source a diamond from Botswana - which he has previously referred to as his 'second home'. 

The stone was paired with two diamonds from a tiara that belonged to Princess Diana.  

Finding Freedom provides an intimately detailed and personalised version of the events leading up to the Sussexes' dramatic departure from royal life, with co-authors Scobie and Durand insisting 'all information in this book has at least two sources'.

Writing in The Telegraph, the Defence Secretary warns that "China too are developing offensive space weapons" after the UK and US accused Russia of testing a weapon-like projectile that could be used to target satellites.

Mr Wallace said the integrated defence review, which will report to Boris Johnson next year, will lead to the Ministry of Defence "pivoting away" from a focus on conventional warfare, with the department "reshaped to operate much more in the newest domains of space, cyber and sub-sea".

The Government will adopt "next generation defence" as it seeks to "outmanoeuvre our adversaries with a sharper technological edge and relentless focus on innovation", he pledged.

The intervention comes after MPs warned that a weapon said to have been fired from a Russian satellite earlier this month could "cripple" the UK's systems. Moscow dismissed the claims as "propaganda".

On Saturday, Will Whitehorn, the president of industry body UKspace, warned that launching missiles from satellites could spell "the end of space".

"If you actually fired at other satellites, space would quickly become a field of massive shrapnel and, as you can imagine, that would be the end of space," he told Radio 4's Today programme.

Mr Wallace wrote: "This week, we have been reminded of the threat Russia poses to our national security with the provocative test of a weapon-like projectile from a satellite threatening the peaceful use of space.

The UK will be living with coronavirus for many years to come and even a vaccine is unlikely to eliminate it for good, experts are warning.

Wellcome Trust director Prof Sir Jeremy Farrar told the House of Commons' Health Committee "things will not be done by Christmas".

He went on to say humanity would be living with the virus for "decades".

It comes after the prime minister said last week he hoped for a return to normality by Christmas.

Boris Johnson made the comments as he set out plans to further ease restrictions, including the opening of leisure centres and indoor swimming pools later this month and the prospect of mass gatherings being allowed from the autumn.

But experts giving evidence to the cross-party group of MPs said it was important to be realistic that the virus would still be here.

Sir Jeremy, a member of Sage, the government advisory body, said the world would be living with Covid-19 for "very many, many years to come".

"Things will not be done by Christmas. This infection is not going away, it's now a human endemic infection.

"Even, actually, if we have a vaccine or very good treatments, humanity will still be living with this virus for very many, many years.... decades to come."

He urged against complacency during the summer, saying the period was a "crucial phase" to prevent a second wave.

"If we have any sense of complacency of 'this is behind us', then we will undoubtedly have a second wave, and we could easily be in the same situation again."

He said it was important to further build up testing capacity as well as investing in treatments and vaccines.

Vaccine 'unlikely to have durable effect'
Prof Sir John Bell, of the University of Oxford, said he thought it was unlikely that Covid-19 would ever be eliminated despite the positive news announced on Monday that trials by his university had triggered an immune response - an important step in developing a vaccine.

"The reality is that this pathogen is here forever, it isn't going anywhere," he told MPs.

"Look at how much trouble they've had in eliminating, for example, polio, that eradication programme has been going on for 15 years and they're still not there.

"So this is going to come and go, and we're going to get winters where we get a lot of this virus back in action.

"The vaccine is unlikely to have a durable effect that'll last for a very long time, so we're going to have to have a continual cycle of vaccinations, and then more disease, and more vaccinations and more disease.

"So I think the idea that we're going to eliminate it across the population, that's just not realistic."

Chief adviser defends government record
The government's chief medical adviser was also quizzed by MPs.

Prof Chris Whitty was asked at length about the UK's record so far in tackling coronavirus.

He defended moves to end attempts at trying to contain the virus in March, while defending the actions of ministers accused of announcing lockdown too late.

Crucial evidence about the scale of the outbreak and modelling about how quickly it could spread was presented to ministers on 16 March.

But it was a full week later that a total lockdown was announced.

Prof Whitty said it was not a "huge delay" given the "enormity" of the decision.

He also pointed out that others steps were taken in the meantime, including the closing of schools.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has defended the government's record on testing - and his decision to set the target of providing 100,000 tests a day by the end of April.
The move has been criticised with some describing it as arbitrary.
But Mr Hancock told the Science and Technology Committee, which was sitting after the Health Committee, that it was important because of the need to "scale up" at an unprecedented speed.
"The point of the big, hairy, audacious goal is to say to the whole system, 'this is where we're going, you do your bit, let's get there'."

Knife crime in England and Wales reached a historic high in the year leading up to the end of March, as murders climb again in Sadiq Khan’s London.

Crimes committed with knives in Britain jumped 6 per cent over the previous year, with some 46,265 knife crimes being recorded in the year to March 2020 — when the British government locked down the nation in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

The figures are in fact likely higher in reality, however, as Greater Manchester Police did not contribute their statistics to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) report.

The surge in bloodshed was driven in large part by crime in London, which saw a 7 per cent increase in knife-related crimes, with the number of murders in the British capital increasing by 23 per cent in the year to April. Homicides committed with a knife or blade have also risen by 28 per cent since 2018, with 86 people being stabbed to death in London last year.

The ONS report also revealed that last year there were 619 offences committed with corrosive substances — such as acid. This was the first year that the data collection agency recorded figures for such crimes.


London Assembly Member David Kurten said in response to the surge in crime: “There must be an end to politically correct policing — more stop & search, more arrests of burglars and violent gang members, less hassling people for having the wrong opinions.”

Former Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney added: “All this while London’s dismal Mayor, Sadiq Khan, orders an urgent review into… ‘racist’ statues.”

The proportion of crimes actually being solved in England and Wales also fell to a record low, with just 7 per cent of criminal acts resulting in a court appearance for a suspect, down from 8 per cent last year and 16 per cent in 2014-15 when such records began to be compiled.

The Home Office report said that the fall represented some 33,460 fewer offences resulting in a criminal charge or court summons compared to the year prior. The number of sexual offences that resulted in charges fell from 5.2 per cent two years ago to just 3.2 per cent last year.

The number of rapes that ended in prosecution was just 1.4 per cent.
 
The national chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, John Apter, said: “It is a tragedy these crimes continue to spiral as my colleagues are stretched to their limits, but with fewer officers available to be out on patrol it comes as no surprise.”

“More than ever we need a visible presence and deterrent to violent crime. We need more officers available to deter and prevent these horrendous crimes and ease the burden on over-stretched colleagues,” Apter added.

The surge in knife crime comes as the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced last month that as a result of budget shortfalls due to the Chinese coronavirus and the ensuing lockdown, his office will look to cut some  £110 million from the budgets of the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), the fire brigade, and other essential services.
