The generation of Americans, British, Australians, and other Allied forces who fought Germany, Italy, and Japan were a unique generation on many levels. They were the first generation to fight a fully mechanized war with massive numbers of air planes, tanks, and powerful artillery. What is interesting is that the World War II generation was very mechanically inclined as cars and trucks were a new phenomenon that they grew up with. Therefore, when it came time to fix and deal with logistics issues, these Westerners were at a major advantage. Logistics were one of the most important underrated aspects of the Allied victory.

But willingness to sacrifice, ability to adjust under fire, and willingness to change a plan that was not working were all critical elements that led to the Allied victory. These warriors faced machine guns, impossible odds at times, and yet persevered to defeat the enemy at enormous risk. The lucky ones that survived deserve every bit of respect that we can give them. Moreover, their bravery should be mandatory learning in every public school. There has never been a war that was more of a consensus than World War II. It was indeed the “Great War” – in every sense of the word.

The issue is not even the fact that the riots occurred. It is the fact that the rioters made it into the very seat of the Congress and Senate and brought the government to a standstill for a few hours. But moreover, it is the fact that so many people in America today, according to many reports, a majority of America, believe that the electoral system is filled with fraudulent activity.

Did something happen in the 2020 elections that did not occur beforehand? Perhaps. But more probably, what happened in 2020 happened in 2016 also. But in 2020, the system of “adjusting” election results was perfected to focus on the key counties in the key battleground states where adjustments were more easy to implement. This is the reason that so many of the left-wing news outlets insist mercilessly that there were absolutely no fraudulent practices. The stakes are too high. Even if a majority of the Republican legislators believe that we should accept the results of the 2020 election, that doesn’t mean that they necessarily believe that widespread fraud did not exist. Even if the fraud lawsuits that were brought were not legislated before January 20th, 2021, that does not mean that future proof will not bring to light fraudulent practices that pervaded the election process.

The Republican Party would be making a terrible mistake if it did not pursue major electoral reform in the coming years. Until 2022, they probably will not get very far. But in 2022, there are pretty good chances that Congress will flip. Historically, this has happened many times to incumbent Presidents who begin their term with Congress and the Senate on their side. If electoral reform is the #1 issue, angry Republicans will come out in the masses in order to save the Republic. The stakes are indeed high.

But that is not enough. It is also just as important that people have a clue of the history of the United States of America and the modern western world. If we don’t know what the challenges that the western world faced in the previous decades, and ideally, the previous century, we will be ill-prepared to face the inevitable challenges in the coming decades.

Every young child today, before finishing High School needs to know what the Cold War was. They need to know who John F. Kennedy and FDR were. They need to know why Harry S. Truman dropped 2 atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They need to know why there was a war in Vietnam and Korea, and why Richard Nixon was impeached. They need to know that in 1969, the United States landed on the moon, and that Elvis was not Russian, and that the Beatles were a music group. Yes, cultural history is also important because it impacts on our lives. Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were both Presidents for eight years, and all of the children of the United States need to know this.

Way too many things have become politicized today and many people see historical aspects as if they are either good or bad. But in truth, what matters is not so much our opinions on historical phenomenon. What matters more is to have a basic clue about the world we live in. World War II and the Holocaust were seminal events in the modern history of the world. If we truly would like to live in a world where anti-semitism can be reduced, the first step is for more and more of the younger generation to have a clue.

He did not shy away from controversy, and never seemed to take the easy path. His America First philosophy found many detractors, on the right and the left. But it also awakened an electorate that was barely involved until the 2016 election. The Republican Party after the Trump Presidency is significantly expanded in a way that may change the way the middle class vote – for many years to come.

The polarization of the two parties reached a high during the four years of the Trump Presidency. But it also proved to be a time of shifting allegiances within key elements of the electorate – especially the middle class. The economic prowess of the Trump years are unquestionably an historic achievement. So too, the peace agreements that the Trump administration brokered in the Middle East has already been recognized by leading Democrats as a fantastic achievement. But the handling of the unprecedented challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic will be debated for decades. His loose pronouncements on this heart-wrenching issue during an election year may have even cost his the election.

But perhaps the most lasting achievement of the Trump Presidency will be the beginning of the re-calibration of the relationship between the United States and China. Russia and Putin make a lot of noise. But the threat from China may continue to grow and grow in the coming decades. Nobody focused on this issue until Donald Trump brought it to the fore.

The Jewish calendar has many holidays. Some celebrate the survival of the Jewish people over various enemies, some are solemnly spiritual in nature, but others exist, too. One such festival, Tu B’Shvat (sometimes written Tu BiShvat), is perhaps the greatest proof of the Jewish people’s deep connection with the Holy Land.

What Is Tu B’Shvat?
Tu B’Shvat is a Jewish holiday heralding the blossoming of trees and the beginning of the coming cycle of fruit. The name actually derives directly from the Hebrew date of the holiday, which occurs on the fifteenth day of Sh’vat. “Tu” stands for the Hebrew letters Tet and Vav, which have numerical values of 9 and 6 respectively, which add up to 15. Hence Tu B’Shvat literally means the “fifteenth [day of the month] of Sh’vat.”
Where Does Tu B’Shvat Come From?
Tu B’Shvat’s roots can be traced all the way back to the Jewish Talmud. While Rosh Hashanah, the main Jewish new year festival, is familiar to many people, there are actually a number of new year dates in the Jewish tradition. The Talmud records a debate with various opinions, leading to the establishment of four new years:

The first of Nisan as the “new year for kings and festivals”;
The first of Elul as the “new year for the tithe of cattle”;
The first of Tishrei as the “new year for years,” including the calculation of the calendar and sabbatical years;
The fifteenth of Sh’vat as the “new year for trees”.
Many centuries ago, a variety of different taxation methods were employed. One of the most common was called tithing. Tithing required separating percentages of produce, and handing them over to the local authorities. And for farmed in ancient Israel, Tu B’Shvat marked the date when calculations of the forthcoming fruit crop would begin.

The Talmud records this date as being the point in time when trees in the Land of Israel are said to awaken from their winter hibernation and start the process of renewal, blooming and bearing new fruit. While the date can naturally only be approximate, the month of Sh’vat was selected because “most of the yearly rainfall has passed” (Babylonian Talmud, Rosh Hashana, 14a), causing the trees to renew and their fruit ripen.

So before it was ever considered a festival, Tu B’Shvat was actually a formal date which was primarily significant for its function in governance. Over the centuries, however, the day has been transformed into an opportunity to connect with the Land of Israel.

How Is It Celebrated?
Each year, Jews around the world celebrate the Tu B’Shvat festival, but celebrations are experienced most strongly in Israel.

It is customary to eat fruit, specifically produce from the Land of Israel known as the Shiv’at HaMinim, wheat, barley, grapes, dates, pomegranates, olives, and figs, collectively called “the seven species” that have a special significance in Judaism.

While nowadays Tu B’Shvat is generally restricted to its purely agricultural elements, Tu B’shvat once held an important bureaucratic function in the Land of Israel’s economy: It marked the date from which the age of trees was counted, which was of relevance when calculating tithes and taxes. It also served as a reference point to determine the maturation of a tree and its fruit, which is significant as Jewish law prohibits the consumption of fruit from a tree until its fourth year.

Jewish law states numerous commands and prohibitions regarding produce from the Land of Israel, and many of these are connected with Tu B’Shvat:

The prohibition against eating a tree’s fruits until it is fully three years old.
The requirement to allocate the fruits of a tree in its fourth year to the Jewish Temple (Leviticus 19:23-25).
The command to separate the first fruits from the fifth year of the tree’s life and onward, along with other annual crop tithes, to be donated to the needy and the Temple.
The command to observe the Sabbatical year, called Shmittah in Hebrew. During this time, produce grown in the seventh year cannot be consumed, sold, or used. Fruit from trees that begin to bud prior to Tu B’Shvat are reckoned as of the previous year, while trees which bloom after Tu B’Shvat are deemed as the first fruits of the new year.
Interestingly, because the Hebrew day begins at nightfall and lasts till nightfall the following sunset, the Hebrew date actually covers two days. In 2020, for example, Tu B’shvat starts in the evening of February 9, and ends 24 hours later, around sunset on the 10th of February. In 2021, the festival will take place over January 27 and 28, and in 2020 the festival will occur even earlier, over January 16 and 17. As the day begins with nightfall, the first meal of any Jewish day is supper, and many people work the Tu B’Shvat Seder into their dinner as the festival begins.

What Is The Seder?
Over the centuries, a meal known as the Tu B’Shvat Seder has been incorporated into the day. The Seder, based on multiple Jewish spiritual sources, calls for consuming an array of fruits, particularly ones of trees that are native to the Land of Israel. The Seder, compiled by the students of a famed sixteenth century Rabbi from Safed, celebrates our yearning to return to the Land of Israel. The Seder as instituted required eating ten specific fruits and drinking four cups of wine in a specific order while reciting the appropriate blessings. Contemporary Tu B’Shvat Seders tend to be less rigidly structured, however, but two things do stand out above all others: First, participants try to eat “new” fruits, meaning fruits that they have not consumed for at least one month, and second, the inclusion of the Shivat HaMinim – the seven fruits and grains that are associated with the Land of Israel.

In contemporary Israel, tree-planting is central to the Tu B’Shvat experience. The practice can be traced back to the time when the Jewish pioneers began to settle in the Land of Israel. For them, working the land became an ideal, and they began a process of afforestation in order to overcome the desolation of the land.

The planting of trees on Tu B’Shvat gradually became customary, and in 1908, the Jewish National Fund and the educational system officially adopted the custom. Since then, Tu B’Shvat has been known in Israel as a holiday for planting trees, on which schoolchildren and their teachers plant trees all over the country. The tree-planting ceremonies symbolize the renewed connection between the nation and its land.

By 1948, approximately 2% of Israel was covered by trees. Over the space of the seventy years thereafter, the percentage had grown to roughly 8.5%, making Israel the only country in the world with a net growth in trees over the course of the twentieth century.

So strong is the connection to Israel’s identity, that on February 14, 1949, Israel’s Constituent Assembly convened for the first time in the Jewish Agency building in central Jerusalem. The Hebrew calendar date that day was Tu Bishvat. Each year, the Knesset celebrates its establishment on the New Year of the Trees, and on that day, its members participate in tree-planting ceremonies around the country.

Outside of Israel, Tu B’Shvat generally remains a minor holiday, with no special prayers recited in synagogues and no connection to any particular historical event. Nevertheless, Jews around the world view the day as an opportunity to be grateful for the planet we live on, and specifically for the Land of Israel. Even if one is unable to relocate to Israel, we are all able to partake in this day, enjoy fruits and grains grown in Israeli soil, and celebrate the millennia-old connection the Jewish people have with the region.

While Jews have lived all over the globe, Jewish tradition has always centered around the Holy Land, and these rituals and their specifics serve to highlight the centrality of the Land of Israel to the Jewish people’s identity.

Expressing our profound gratitude to healthcare workers through the language of art.

As a professional classical violinist, I had a lot of time on my hands during the pandemic since concerts and gigs were canceled or postponed. I began practicing new pieces, like “Salut d’Amour”, a beautiful short song by the English composer Edward Elgar, written as an engagement present to his soon-to-be wife. It’s full of love and romance and lyricism.

One of my relatives is an ER doctor in NYC, and reading the news, I was thinking about what she must go through every day. I wanted to do something to show her support and care during this tremendously difficult time. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to play for her this beautiful piece of music by Elgar. Maybe she’d find solace and comfort in it, even if for a moment. But knowing that healthcare workers all over the country were defending us on the frontlines, reaching out to one doctor in New York didn’t feel like enough. So I took on the goal to organize violinists from every state in America to record “Salut d’Amour” and virtually play it together, as a way to show unity and gratitude for our healthcare workers.

I knew musicians from so many places, and the classical community is tight-knit, so I was sure I could find 50 violinists in all states within a week. With enough hubris to get me started, I began reaching out to friends from Florida, Michigan, Kentucky, California, as many as I could each day, and to my excitement, most said yes to the project right away. After 20-some states, I began asking for friends to recommend musicians, finding a violinist from the Milwaukee Symphony who studied at my university, a woman from the Hawaii Symphony who had studied with my same teacher back in Chicago, and more with surprising connections.

Eventually, it got down to places like New Hampshire and the Dakotas, and I was emailing symphony personnel managers and professors at various universities. Two weeks later, I had 50 violinists from every state in America practicing Elgar’s piece at their homes and starting to send in their recordings.

With God’s merciful hand guiding the process, a friend from North Carolina (violinist turned professional filmmaker) volunteered hours and hours of his time to edit the videos so that 50 tracks of violinists playing a song would sound perfectly in sync. In the end, violinists from as far away as the Arkansas Symphony and Boise Philharmonic expressed their joy at taking part in the project and making music while their concert halls lay shuttered and dark.

Fulfilling this project was a magical experience. It lifted the spirits of many musicians as we bonded together to create a gift of music that comes from our very essence. And it gave us the opportunity to express our profound gratitude to healthcare workers through the language of art that brings God’s light into the world.

The United States of America has had two dominant parties for more than a century. The idea of a third party comes up every now and then, and it usually indeed makes a great impact – but for a limited time. Ross Perot entered the race in 1992 and basically helped pave the way for Bill Clinton’s victory. Of course, the economic downturn right before the elections did not help George H. Bush either. But Bill Clinton also understood well that in order to get elected and stay popular, he would have to harness the radical side of the Democratic Party from becoming too influential. He also got the message in 1994 when the Republicans swept into control of Congress. If a Joe Biden and Kamala Harris led United States venture too far off the middle, 2022 may be a big year for the Republicans, whether or not Donald Trump plays a central role in the Republican Party.

On the Republican side, they cannot simply dismiss the fact that Donald Trump brought in hundreds of thousands of new supporters who he excited in an unprecedented fashion. These are valuable supporters, not only rioters who attacked the Capitol. But the middle usually is the key to winning elections. Whoever runs for the Republican leadership in 2024 will have to do battle with whomever Donald Trump supports, and perhaps with Trump himself. It will be an interesting few years…

If anybody tells you that there will never be peace in the Middle East, then tell them to watch this video. This is not as exceptional as one may think. There are actually hundreds of thousands of Arabs within the State of Israel who would agree with every word that the former Miss Iraq says. True, they are not a majority. But, in the Middle East, the unexpected often becomes a reality.

If anybody had said a mere 5 years ago that Israel would sign economic agreements and peace agreements with numerous Arab countries in the Middle East within one year, it would have been dismissed as a pipe dream. But in truth, there were several moderate Arab countries who care much more about prosperity than they do about the Arab-Israeli conflict. More importantly, they have a common enemy – radical Islam. When they had to choose between eradicating the radical Islamic threat in their country or fanning the flames of hatred towards Israel, they were much more inclined to fighting radical Islam. Once the economic incentives were brought into the picture via the leadership of the Trump administration, they buckled and signed agreements. This has created a positive snowball effect, and now other countries are following suit. Hopefully, the former Miss Iraq will continue to bring many others to follow in her footsteps too.

Now, she is recognized as an authority on nearly every international issue. She never has any trouble finding the way to bash Israel no matter what the issue is. Here she is hoping that the new rival of Benjamin Netanyahu will bash the Israeli policy of vaccinating it’s own citizens first and then vaccinating the Arabs of the Palestinian Authority. The tactic of silencing your interviewee is exactly the opposite of what a good interviewer ought to do. Amanpour is excellent at her craft. But she has an axe to grind whenever it comes to Israel, and is only looking for pro-“Palestinian” and anti-Netanyahu interviewees. This is the key when being attacked by the fake news outlets – don’t give in, but hit back with the facts.

Gideon Saar is one of the younger politicians in Israel vying to be the next Prime Minister of Israel. Although he has established himself as a foe of Prime Minister Netanyahu, they actually agree on many issues. Netanyahu is simply very skilled at keeping any potential up and coming leaders from gaining too much power against him within the Likud Party. So, instead of fighting from within, Saar and others have created their own new party in order to fight from the outside. Saar has served as the Minister of Education, and is considered a heavyweight among the younger generation of Likud Party leaders. Don’t be surprised if he ends up joining a Netanyahu-led government even though he expressly pledged to not do that when announcing his new political party.

Glenn Beck is not just a controversial TV show personality. He is also quite hilarious. This discussion of how Ben Shapiro can actually be considered someone that must be censored should scare anybody concerned with the status of free speech in the United States of today.

Let’s clarify a few things. Ben Shapiro, in a very public manner, did not support the election of Donald Trump in the election of 2016. He did not support Hillary Clinton either. He publicly claimed that he did not support either one, but the hoped that Donald Trump would surprise and bring more positive policies to the United States of America than did the Obama administrations. This was a rather gutsy and unpopular stance among his following. But he stuck with it. Within the first year of the Trump administration, he came out clearly saying that he does not associate or agree with much of the personality traits of Donald Trump. He was appalled at the insults that Donald Trump, candidate and President, hurled at others. But, he was extremely impressed with the policy positions of the Trump administration on Iran, immigration, and fiscal policy. That changed Shapiro’s mind and led him to support the reelection of Donald Trump.
But since he was a conservative and not a Never Trump supporter, Shapiro was too much for the Politico newspaper. It is truly a scary time in North America when people like Ben Shapiro, one of the most clear-headed and cool-headed conservatives is also being censored. If the United States has a future, this will boomerang and 2022 and 2024 will see a sweep of Conservatives back into Congress and the White House. If not, and the censorship continues, the United States has a bleak future.

Glenn Beck is not just a controversial TV show personality. He is also quite hilarious. This discussion of how Ben Shapiro can actually be considered someone that must be censored should scare anybody concerned with the status of free speech in the United States of today.

Let’s clarify a few things. Ben Shapiro, in a very public manner, did not support the election of Donald Trump in the election of 2016. He did not support Hillary Clinton either. He publicly claimed that he did not support either one, but the hoped that Donald Trump would surprise and bring more positive policies to the United States of America than did the Obama administrations. This was a rather gutsy and unpopular stance among his following. But he stuck with it. Within the first year of the Trump administration, he came out clearly saying that he does not associate or agree with much of the personality traits of Donald Trump. He was appalled at the insults that Donald Trump, candidate and President, hurled at others. But, he was extremely impressed with the policy positions of the Trump administration on Iran, immigration, and fiscal policy. That changed Shapiro’s mind and led him to support the reelection of Donald Trump.
But since he was a conservative and not a Never Trump supporter, Shapiro was too much for the Politico newspaper. It is truly a scary time in North America when people like Ben Shapiro, one of the most clear-headed and cool-headed conservatives is also being censored. If the United States has a future, this will boomerang and 2022 and 2024 will see a sweep of Conservatives back into Congress and the White House. If not, and the censorship continues, the United States has a bleak future.

Unfortunately, this clouds over some excellent policy decisions that he has made. In a normal situation, his accomplishments would place him as a clear front runner for reelection. But since he has been so controversial, there is now a uniquely divided electorate. There are at least 45% of the electorate that will definitely vote for Donald Trump and 45% that will not. That leaves a vicious fight for the 120% of the middle-of-the-roaders who will determine the election.

If the election is based on policy, Donald Trump should win handily. If it is based on style, both sides should lose. Donald Trump’s infantile name-calling should not allow him to even win a primary, let alone the Presidency. But, he has mastered the art of working the media to grab maximum attention at no charge. But, Joe Biden’s obvious lack of mental acuity should also be reason enough for him not making it on to the ballot. The state of the American political system has reached a low point. But, this will probably change by 2024 as a new leadership will take over in Congress and the Senate. The American public will probably crave a return to civility after so much rancor and discord in Washington. A unifying candidate will probably be the wining candidate. But, until then, things will be rather rocky.

One of the basic tenets of the design of the government of the United States of America is the separation of powers between the three seats of the United States Government, The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. They all have immense power, but each balances out the other’s abilities to become too powerful. But what if all of these branches are firmly in the hands of one side of the political divide? Will that necessarily lead to an unhinged leadership of the country?

Some may think that this is the situation that we are in today. But, a few things must be noted. First off, the Judicial branch is not slanted to the left today. At most, it is a centrist Supreme Court. But, more probably, it is a rightward leaning Court due to the three appointees of President Donald Trump. But more importantly, the Senate is split at 50-50, and the filibuster idea – for now – allows a large minority to not be stomped on mercilessly. Bipartisanship is not gone today. But will it be gone by 2022 or 2024? Will the Supreme Court be packed to 13 Supreme Court judges? Will Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. become States in order to insure that four more Democratic Senators tip the Senate for the next decade or two? If the Democratic majority tries these political ruses, they may succeed. Eric Swalwell has reached a new low. Trump is, according to him, similar to no less than Osama Bin Laden. What an absolute disgrace. According to Swalwell, President Trump just lead a full-scale insurrection against the Congress, right? What a load of misinformation. As we have documented here and here, too many fingers point in the direction of antifa-like activists who infiltrated the Trump rally. The other thing the establishment media is ignoring is the groundbreaking revelation of Rep. He is potentially compromised. Yet, the media, and Democrats are ignoring this revelation. The basic gist of this speech is that laws need to be enacted in order to enhance the lives of minorities and women due to systemic racism and sexism in the American culture. This is a controversial argument, but it should not be dismissed. Of course racism exists. It exists in all cultures. And yes, it exists among black people too against white people and other non-minorities. So, how should the racism that exists in the world be handled? This is not a simple problem. But the key is not government intervention in anything – except for education.

Racism can indeed be combated via education. But it is not simple to change the mindset of older people through government regulations. How should education changes be made? This is also not simple, but there are great minds who can figure this one out. Major League Baseball and most major sports only became integrated in the middle of the 20th century. This was not due to governmental regulations as much as due to a cultural change that was going on in America. Racism should be viewed as a scourge like drugs. Perhaps some of the leading women in America – including the former First Ladies should form a unified non-political group to combat racism. But the key is not governmental policies. The key is formal and especially informal education on the subject. That is something that some government money should be used for. Handouts are not the solution. They just ruin the playing field as opposed to flattening it.

Why were some police given orders to open the doors and let them into the building, as seen in this video? Most of the people walking through the halls of the Capitol were taking pictures and just plain sightseeing. Does the fact that a few idiots using violence mean an “insurrection” was taking place at the behest of the President? Too many questions exist to just blame President Trump and his supporters for what happened. Too many questions that the establishment media is not asking.

Anyone who used violence should be punished, regardless of their political affiliation. That was terribly wrong. But as President Trump himself said in his video yesterday “anyone who used violence is not a supporter of mine. We are the party of law and order”. To say that this incident was a “coup” is terribly wrong

And to equate the glass that a few crazy rioters broke in the Capitol to the massive Nazi State-sponsored burning of hundreds of synagogues and massive incarceration of thousands of Jews in concentration camps, is patently absurd. President Trump may indeed be a controversial President to his haters, but turning him into a Nazi, is as reasonable as saying that Barack Obama is the American equivalent of a Stalinist Soviet.

Let us all calm down and think twice before making historical analogies that are no more than gross exaggerations that are far removed from the truth.

Instead of focusing on the very real issues of gender, such as equal opportunities for women in the marketplace, these gender equivalence attitudes are focused on hyper-sensitivities that don’t actually make significant changes.

Will the Biden administration embrace these kinds of hyper-sensitivities? Probably. But the more reasonable people who are genuinely interested in moving progress for women forward ought to calm down a bit. Despite there being more things to move on, things are quite good already for women. But there is one issue that hyper-sensitivity for the respect of women is justified on – domestic violence. These issues are very real and unfortunately, swept under the rug way too often. These are not simple issues, nor are they easy to fix. This is where the focus ought to be on. Not on ending blessings with the word – Amen.
