Robert Spencer’s new book The Critical Qur’an is a one volume encyclopedia of the Qur’an. It is a superb reference book with a sound foundation, using multiple translations. It is detailed. All of the knotty problems are solved by direct scholarly references.

In The Critical Qur’an, Spencer clarifies the problems that cloud our understanding of the Qur’an, which lurches from one subject to the next. Ideas come out of nowhere with no context. Topics – like “hell” – repeat again and again and again.  The constant repetition is tiresome.

A little after noon on Friday, Sir David Amess, a 69-year-old British MP, entered Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex for a meeting with constituents, which he held regularly. Shortly after Amess walked into the church, a Muslim whom AFP described as “a British national with Somali heritage” approached the MP. According to a local councillor, John Lamb, “there were people waiting to see him, and one of them literally got a knife out and just began stabbing him.” Amess died of his wounds a few hours later. The Metropolitan Police announced Saturday “the early investigation has revealed a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism.” So Britain once again has a manifestation of the glories of multiculturalism and mass Muslim migration – not that any of the obvious lessons will be drawn.

According to the BBC, “Whitehall officials say the suspect was not on their database of ‘subjects of interest,’” which is simply an indication of the fact that there are so many jihadis in Britain, authorities are finding it impossible to keep track of them all. This is the result of Britain’s longstanding immigration policies, as well as an absolute unwillingness on the part of British officials to confront jihad recruitment and activity head-on, for fear of appearing “Islamophobic.”

Even after the murder of Amess, there is no indication of any change at the top in Britain. Instead, the usual platitudes were issued, and the usual promises made. Britain’s hopeless Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and Marxist-in-waiting, Keir Starmer, visited the site of Amess’ murder to leave flowers. Former Prime Minister Theresa May, who is responsible for so much of the chaos of modern Britain, said it was “a tragic day for our democracy” and called Amess “a decent man and respected parliamentarian, killed in his own community while carrying out his public duties.” She did not, of course, say anything about the person who killed him, or his motives.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the killing was “absolutely wrong and we cannot let that get in the way of our functioning democracy.”

Sure, Ms. Patel. So what are you going to do to stop the spread of the jihad ideology in Muslim communities? Why, absolutely nothing, of course. And less than nothing: the BBC stated that “detectives and the security service MI5 will be delving deeply into the life of the suspect to understand how he reached his mindset….They will be looking at whether this was an attack by a ‘lone actor’ or someone who is part of a network.”

Great. So at best, they may uncover yet another jihadist cell in Britain, and put its members away for a few years of dawah and Qur’an study in prison. At best. But will British authorities ask themselves, and Muslim communities, why there are so many networks of jihadis on the Sceptered Isle in the first place, and start challenging the mosques and scrutinizing what is taught in them? Sure, as soon as I am crowned king and move into Buckingham Palace.

It’s not clear why the Somali targeted Amess; the MP was not notably a critic of Islam. He visited mosques and showed a welcoming face to Muslim migrants. He was, however, a strong supporter of Israel and friend of Jews everywhere. The Times of Israel reported that Amess “sought various avenues in parliament to honor Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. In 1997, a statue of Wallenberg he had campaigned relentlessly for was unveiled in London by Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Israeli president Ezer Weizman. In January this year, he called the event ‘one of the proudest moments of my life,’ and urged the government to redouble efforts against antisemitism, during a speech to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day.”

Amess stated during that speech: “Although I myself am not a Jew but a Catholic, there is Jewish blood in each and every one of us. I would certainly have been proud to have been born a Jew, and I stand shoulder to shoulder with our local Jewish community.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid noted that Amess “always stood with the Jewish community and was a true friend of Israel.”

All that could nettle a Somali Muslim. But such things cannot and must not be discussed in modern, multicultural Britain. Lee Jordison, a man who works in the area of the murder, said: “Something like this doesn’t happen – not in all the years I’ve been round this way.” Get used to it, sir! This is the brave new multicultural Britain, that is, a more perfidious Albion than ever, selling out its own people and sacrificing them on the altar of diversity.

There is no recognition of time in the Qur’an. The chapters are laid out in order of their length, not in a time sequence.  It starts with the longest chapter and ends with the shortest. To add to the confusion, it uses many strange names and foreign terms. Basically, it is unintelligible, confusing, repetitive and filled with hate towards the Unbelievers.

The most problematic to most non-Muslim readers is that the Qur’an presents contradictory ideas. One verse will teach tolerance and the next will call for the death of the Unbelievers. Islamic ethics are contradictory or dualistic, with one set of rules for dealing with other Muslims and another set of rules for the Unbelievers.

So no one can understand the Qur’an by simply reading it. There must be auxiliary commentators, exegetes, in order to find meaning in the words of Allah. Robert Spencer guides us through the mire of this contradictory and perplexing work using all the tools of exemplary scholarship.

First, there are many translations of the Qur’an. Broadly speaking, all these translations fall into two categories – soft and harsh. Here is an example using Qur’an 4:34:

Men are in charge of women, because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend of their property. So good women are obedient, guarding in secret what Allah has guarded. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, give them a warning and banish them to separate beds, and beat them. Then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. Indeed,      Allah is always high, exalted, great.

If the Qur’an you use says “beat lightly,” then it is a soft translation. Spencer resolves the fallacious argument that what is needed to make the Qur’an understandable is a better translation.  The practical method he uses in his book gives the reader no less than twelve other translations of this verse in order to compare versions and see how they have been changed.

The main translation he provides is clear, free of the obfuscation that mars so many others.And the numerous footnotes in The Critical Qur’an function as the clarifying agents for the contradictory ideas.

The word “critical” in the title The Critical Qur’an is exceedingly important. The approach to knowledge in Western Civilization is analytical and rational, and uses the process of critical thought. There are no forbidden ideas in critical or analytic thinking. Critical thought is the approach which Robert Spencer uses to examine the details of Islam’s most holy book in order to find out the truth of its meaning.

Truth, however, has no meaning in authoritative knowledge. Truth is determined by the correct authority (Islamic doctrine) where there are only thoughts and actions that are “allowed” (halal) and those that are “forbidden” (haram).

Authoritarians forbid critical thought for the simple reason that it cannot co-exist with authoritative thinking. Muslims forbid critical thinking by threatening and inducing fear. Apologists for Islam forbid critical thinking by censorship on the basis that offending any minority is a social evil. The offending speech, or Islamophobia, is considered bigoted and must be suppressed.

Critical thinking exists by debate. Critical thinkers seek truth through the friction of debate in order to tease out the resolution of an idea. Authoritative knowledge forbids debate. Those who want to debate are demeaned and insulted or simply locked out of the venue. Both political correctness and Islam agree that only “allowed” opinions may be expressed and “forbidden” opinions are declared to be a moral evil.

Notice that these different points of view that cannot be reconciled. There is no possible resolution between the view of the West and Islam. The apologists of Islam try to bring about a bridge building compromise, but it is not logically possible.

According to Islam, the Qur’an is a book of the exact words of the only god of the universe, Allah. It is complete, perfect, eternal and universal.

The concepts of Islam are limited to Qur’an and Sunna of Mohammed. No logical conclusions can violate the Qur’an.

The Islamic civilization has an authoritarian intellectual basis in which no idea may contradict the Qur’an or Sunna of Mohammed. Period.

The Critical Qur’an is not just a well-researched scholarly book, but it is also a weapon in an ideological war, a civilizational war of ideas.  For 1,400 years, there has been physical war, of “blood and swords” between Islam and the Kafir world.  No one has fought harder or longer to save our civilization than Robert Spencer. He is not only a powerful intellectual thinker and writer but he is also a brilliant and courageous warrior.

I only wish this book had been written 25 years ago. It would have saved me from the time-consuming intellectual work of cutting through the thickets and underbrush of tedious research.

Muslim who defended murderers of Jews to speak at Tree of Life ‘anti-hate’ summit

In October, former President George W. Bush, Biden’s DHS Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, ADL boss Jonathan Greenblatt, and other notables will descend on the massive Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. The occasion isn’t a party convention, but the inaugural Eradicate Hate global summit inspired by the Tree of Life massacre in the area.

During the Tree of Life massacre, a white supremacist gunman opened fire on worshipers at the suburban synagogue in Squirrel Hill and killed 11 people. The shooter had told police, “All these Jews need to die”. The Eradicate Hate summit will commemorate that occasion by inviting a hater, Salam Al-Marayati of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), to speak.

Salam Al-Marayati has defended Hamas and Hezbollah. MPAC had called for removing them from the list of terrorist organizations. He responded to 9/11 by suggesting that Israel was behind the attacks. Just last year he came out with an op-ed accusing Jews of having “weaponized antisemitism to marginalize critics of Israel, especially American Muslims.”

In the 90s, Jewish groups protested the decision by Democrats to appoint him to a counterterrorism commission after his organization argued that the murder of Jews had been adopted by terrorists as one of the “violent reactions to express their despair and suffering”.

The Tree of Life gunman would have said the same thing.

Salam Al-Marayati is one of the summit’s “global advisers” and will be appearing on three different panels, including one on deradicalization. Even if MPAC is better at radicalization.

Flora Yehiel, a 24-year-old Jewish woman, was waiting at a Jerusalem bus stop when a Muslim terrorist rammed his car into the crowd killing her and wounding 23 others. After crashing the car, the terrorist shouted “Allahu Akbar”, got out and kept coming. A survivor at the scene shot him, but he still kept coming, until he finally died. Hamas claimed credit for the attack.

MPAC demanded the extradition of the man who took down the terrorist and called it a “provocative act”.

MPAC and its officials have a long history of supporting the murder of Jews.

At a rally co-sponsored by MPAC in 2000, an emcee encouraged the crowd to chant, “Khaybar, Khaybar oh Jews, the Army of Mohammed is coming for you!”

The slogan refers to the original Islamic ethnic cleansing of Jews and is a call to genocide.

Steven Emerson’s American Jihad describes another rally that same year where MPAC’s political advisor Mahdi Bray played a tambourine while the crowd chanted, “Al Aqsa is calling us, let’s all go into Jihad, and throw stones at the face of the Jews.”

After a Hamas suicide bombing killed 15 people at a pizza place in Jerusalem, including 7 children and Judith Shoshana Greenbaum, a pregnant woman from New Jersey, MPAC’s press release parroted Hamas propaganda calling the massacre of Jews, “the expected bitter result of the reckless policy of Israeli assassination.”

Hamas had claimed that the attack was a response to Israel taking out two of its commanders.

It’s hard to imagine anyone more inappropriate at the inaugural event of a movement that claims to want to eradicate hate, let alone one responding to a massacre of Jews, than MPAC’s boss.

Had the Tree of Life gunman been a Muslim instead of a Neo-Nazi, MPAC would have his back.

And while the Tree of Life gunman was a Neo-Nazi, MPAC and Al-Marayati have their own Nazi ties. MPAC had invited Wiliam Baker, the former leader of a Neo-Nazi party, to speak at its events when he switched to promoting Islamists and arguing that Israel should be destroyed and its Jewish population expelled. Al-Marayati even introduced Baker at an anti-Israel event.

Al-Marayati’s MPAC had also defended a Holocaust denier.

MPAC’s linked Minaret magazine had asserted that, “Jewish unlawfulness is tolerated because powerful brokers can dictate terms to Congress and the Administration.”

So why is a bigot whose organization’s people have incited and defended the murder of Jews, and who has ties to Neo-Nazis, appearing at a summit born in response to a massacre of Jews?

One answer is that Salam Al-Marayati is a longtime Democrat player with close ties in the Clinton, Obama, and Biden administrations. He counts Rep. Adam Schiff as a friend. Over the years the opposition of Jewish groups has weakened as they abandoned their pro-Israel positions. The ADL used to track and condemn MPAC and Al-Marayati’s antisemitism. Now the ADL’s new boss will be appearing at an event with him. There was outrage when J Street first invited Al-Marayati, now no one is even paying attention to his invite to a forum that will feature former President George W. Bush, a Biden cabinet member, and a variety of notable figures.

The second answer is that despite appropriating the Tree of Life synagogue massacre, the Eradicating Hate summit has little interest in addressing antisemitism. That’s not surprising in an era when Holocaust museums run George Floyd exhibits and Anne Frank plays are rewritten to focus on ICE and illegal aliens. The same political gravity that appropriates Jewish suffering to promote more trendy leftist causes was bound to erase Jews from a more recent massacre.

The summit emphasizes that its goal is to fight hate crimes by “highlighting the diversity of its victims”. And Jews, as the Left routinely insists, are too white and not nearly diverse enough.

Beyond Al-Marayati, summit speakers include Maya Berry, the executive director of the Arab American Institute (AAI) which, like MPAC, has claimed that Jews use antisemitism to silence criticism of Israel. That’s a theme of Berry’s work, along with opposing the IHRA definition of antisemitism, and arguing that Zionism is racism. AAI’s own founder had repeatedly defended terrorist groups and terrorist attacks against Jews.

Rounding out the trio is veteran anti-Israel activist Shirin Sinnar who retweeted a description of Hamas as the “Palestinian resistance”. The tweets went on to argue that Islamic terrorists attacking Israel should be considered civilians.

A savvy interviewer would ask her to define “innocent,” as it was Britain-based imam Abdul Makin who said: “Because non-Muslims are never innocent, they are guilty of denying Allah and his prophet.”

Does Shamima Begum believe this also?

Or will British authorities take her words at face value and let her back in the country? Given the level of their self-delusion, that is likely.

Shamima Begum has apologised for saying the Manchester Arena bombing was ‘justified’.

The 22-year-old east London schoolgirl, who fled her home in 2015 to join terror group Isis, was questioned on comments she made about the bombing on Good Morning Britain today (Wednesday).

In 2019, she said the attack that killed 22 people was ‘justified’ because of airstrikes that killed civilians in Syria.

Begum said she regretted her actions and asked the British people for forgiveness.

She said: “I do not believe that one evil justifies another evil. I don’t think that women and children should be killed for other people’s motives and for other people’s agendas.”

Begum said she did not know that women and children were hurt in Manchester.

“I did not know about the Manchester bombing when I was asked. I did not know that people were killed, I did not know that women and children were hurt because of it”, she said.

Speaking from Syria and wearing a Nike baseball cap and grey vest, Begum said it was ‘not justifiable to kill innocent people in the name of religion’.

She also apologised to anyone who has been affected by Isis and the terror group’s actions….

In an apology to the public, she said: “Of course I am completely sorry for anyone that has been affected by Isis.
“In no way do I agree with what they did, I don’t, I’m not trying to justify what they did, it’s not justifiable to kill innocent people in the name of religion.”…
She said: “I want to say that you are clearly struggling with extremism and terrorism in your country.
“And I want to help with that with giving my own experience from with these extremists and what they say and how they persuade people to do what they do and to come to places like Syria.
“I think I could very much help you in your fight against terrorism, because you clearly don’t know what you’re doing.”…
Well, it’s certainly true that Boris doesn’t know what he’s doing, but he still might not be wise to take on Shamima Begum as an advisor.
