Hillary Clinton’s soon-to-be-released memoir, What Happened, has been drawing considerable attention, particularly for released passages revealing unique insights into the presidential candidate’s personal life. Some observers view What Happened as a worthwhile analysis of the Clinton campaign’s failings, while others criticize the former Secretary of State for allegedly refusing to acknowledge the faults that contributed to her electoral loss.

As The Daily Caller notes, Clinton’s book describes her feelings toward her stormy marriage to former-President Bill Clinton. In one passage, Clinton admits to having considered divorce and writes, “It’s just a marriage on paper now.”

Clinton describes the emotional upheavals that struck her marriage when the press and Trump campaign brought up her husband’s sex scandals–including accusations that the former President sexually assaulted several women.

“I heard it again on the 2016 campaign … it’s just a marriage on paper now,” Clinton wrote. “There were times that I was deeply unsure about whether our marriage could or should survive,” the failed presidential hopeful recounts having considered divorce.

Nevertheless, Clinton claims to love her husband and to remain with him out of mutual affection. Despite “anger” and “resentment,” Clinton says she still finds her relationship with the adulterous former President fulfilling.

“But on those days, I asked myself the questions that mattered to me: Do I still love him? And can I still be in this marriage without becoming unrecognizable to myself–twisted by anger, resentment, or remoteness? The answers were always yes.”

Clinton concludes the thought with the assertion that there were “many, many more happy days than sad or angry ones.” These words seemingly contradict the beliefs of Clinton’s detractors, many of whom believe the former First Couple’s marriage to be one of convenience.

Bill Clinton’s most notable affair was with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, a relationship that led to President Clinton’s impeachment. Clinton avoided being removed from office for perjury, but the scandal left a lasting impression on his presidency.

The 2016 election brought renewed interest in the Bill Clinton’s alleged sexual misconduct, including accusations of rape. As Breitbart reports, nursing home administrator Juanita Broaddrick accused Clinton of raping her in 1978 when he was Arkansas Attorney General. As Fox News reports, Broaddrick, Hillary Clinton “personally threatened” her to keep silent about the alleged rape.

In a case covered by Daily Mail, Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee, claims that Bill Clinton exposed himself to her in a hotel room against her will. These allegations began to circulate more widely during election season after the public release of a video in which Donald Trump was recording making lewd comments about women with Access Hollywood correspondent Billy Bush.

CBS News has reported on a number of women who made sexual assault allegations against Trump soon after the release of the Access Hollywood tape. However, the accusers have all virtually disappeared since the election. This stands in stark contrast to Bill Clinton’s accusers, who maintain their allegations even decades later.

In another passage from What Happened, Clinton attributed her 2016 election loss in part to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The passage has spurred scorn from Left-leaning pundits. The interest surrounding these insights into the Clinton campaign may yield favorable sales of the former Secretary of State’s upcoming book, but it won’t satisfy Democrats who still lament over her failed election.
