Hi Elaine,

Some folks have the misguided notion that if something happens (good or bad) then it must be God's will for it to happen.

Not so.

There are many things going on in the world today that grieve God's heart and are contrary to His Will and His Kingdom.

God doesn't always get His way.

Because by giving created beings the freedom to choose, there is always the possibility that they will choose wrongly.

Mankind opens the door to evil whenever they close the door to God.

Evil is easy to open the door to but very hard to get rid of.

In fact, now that we've opened the door, we can't close it by ourselves.

The good news is that there is a way out of the mess we are in.

(God saw the mess before we made it, and He already planned the clean up.)

Jesus is both God's Way out, and God's Way in.

What is so interesting is that God is not out to rescue believers from this sinful earth in a Rapture lifeboat, leaving the world and its doomed passengers behind as though we were abandoning a sinking Titanic.

Love never fails.

God has a better plan!

Do you want to know what is is?

"As in Heaven, so in Earth!"

That is how Jesus taught us to pray in Luke 11.

Not that God would just take us to heaven and forget the earth.

Rather, that things "on earth" would be just as they are "in heaven."

Heaven is where Jesus has preeminence, God's presence is fully manifest, His Will is perfectly done, evil has no place, sin is forgotten, and God and man live together in perfect fellowship with Him and with one another.

"As in Heaven, so in Earth!"

Sounds impossible, doesn't it?

But this is exactly how Jesus taught us to pray.

What did you think it meant?

It's not about getting us into heaven, but getting heaven into us so it will be...

"As in Heaven, so in Earth!"

We will explore this in more detail during this week's Bible study - and look at some of the obstacles that God must overcome to get things the way He wants them, once and for all.

Will you join us?

Learning Contentment

by Chip Brogden
It is rather easy to be content
when things are going well.

So it is especially interesting to note that the happiest letter Paul ever wrote was penned while he was chained to a Roman solider, waiting for a possible sentence of death.

“Rejoice in the Lord always… and again I say, rejoice” (Phil. 4:4)! He says he has learned to be content.

All of us face challenging and difficult circumstances. So let us look closely at Paul’s experience and see if we can discover the source of his contentedness...

Hi Elaine,

When Martha was busy serving and started complaining about all the work she had to do, Jesus said that only "one thing is needed" and that Mary had chosen it (Luke 10).

Isn't that refreshing?

Martha was stressing out over "many things."

Even "many things" that are somehow connected with "much serving" can become a burden and a weight.

This is how religion operates.

It's how most ministries operate.

It's how many Christians live.

You can never do enough, and there is always more to be done.

We get busy, busy, busy for God and lose the simplicity of sitting at His feet, hearing His Word.

Frankly, I'm sick of the "many things" that rob my peace and steal my joy.

If you feel the same way, I invite you to explore this concept of "One Thing" with us at this week's online Bible study:

Identification With Christ
by Chip Brogden
Paul says something very peculiar in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

It should be obvious that Paul is talking about something other than a physical crucifixion and a physical death, burial, and resurrection. Although he says, “I was crucified with Christ” he does not mean that he was present with Christ in the flesh at the moment of crucifixion; instead, he intends to show us something much more profound.

We will soon discover that this experience of being crucified with Christ is not unique to the apostle Paul, but is true of every born-again child of God. Not only Paul, but all disciples of Jesus have been crucified with Christ.

How is this possible?

Hi Elaine,

In the Scriptures we see that Jesus gave His disciples "power and authority" to cast our demons and heal sicknesses.

What an awesome responsibility!

Most people covet that.

I daresay if they got it they would probably use it for good.

And for some that is the highest expression of spirituality - power and authority.

So you would think that with power and authority comes spiritual maturity, right?

In fact, most people assume anyone with power and authority must be spiritually mature.

But that isn't the case.

Spiritual gifts are not the same as spiritual fruit.

A person can be extraordinarily gifted and be rather immature.

Gifts are not the same as wisdom.

And you can even exercise gifts without love, even though it "profits nothing."

But at some point (just like the disciples of Jesus) your power and authority will be short-circuited by a baffling and puzzling situation that you can't deal with.

That's when you see that the real "evil" we have to overcome isn't just "out there" somewhere, but is revealed in our own attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and words.

Even while we're walking around with "power and authority" and claiming all kinds of spiritual-sounding stuff.

We can't cast out spiritual arrogance; we have to grow out of it.

Power and authority cannot compensate for a lack of humility.

Join us for this week's study to learn more...

When You Pray
by Chip Brogden
“Pray after this manner: ‘Our Father in heaven, may Your Name be hallowed, may Your Kingdom come, may Your Will be done: as in heaven, so in earth'” (Matthew 6:9,10).

Prayer does not begin on the earth, it begins in the heavens. It does not begin with man, it begins with the Father. It does not begin with man’s need, but with God’s will. Our praying is ineffectual because we pray as earthly men with an earthly perspective concerning earthly things. See how far and above this manner of praying is when compared to the hypocrite, praying in public to be seen of men! Prayer ought to bring us up into the heavenlies, not bring us down deeper into the earth. It ought to focus our vision on the Father, not on man, or the problems of man. Spiritual prayer begins in the Spirit; heavenly prayer begins in the heavenlies.

When we pray “after this manner” we are transported and elevated beyond flesh-and-blood, beyond the natural, beyond the earthly, beyond the seen-and-felt universe in which we live. We are at once brought into alignment with Someone larger than ourselves, Someone higher, Someone greater. This Someone has an agenda, and is working all things together in one accord towards this agenda. What is the agenda? It is the Will and the Kingdom. So what is the Will and the Kingdom? The Will is “all things in Christ” and the Kingdom is the fulfillment of that Will, when Christ has the preeminence. All of God’s movements are towards this End...
READ THIS ARTICLE https://www.chipbrogden.com/when-you-pray/

Reading Time: 16 minutes
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites… but when you pray, enter into your closet and pray in secret… and when you pray, do not use vain repetitions… after this manner therefore, pray…” (Matthew 6:5-9ff).
For too long we have practiced and preached prayer as a means towards our own ends. I am thinking of several popular teachings and books on the market today which make prayer out to be a ritual through which we can induce God to give us what we want.
This philosophy gives us the illusion of a manageable deity, a “god” who is under our control, having no choice but to respond to a prayer properly worded or recited. A person of average intelligence should be able to see that this is a ridiculous caricature of God – it is a misrepresentation and a deception. The widespread popularity and success of these teachings should make us at least a little suspicious as to the spirit which prompts men to perpetuate it. It cannot be the Holy Spirit.

Jesus takes it for granted that His disciples will pray. This is why four times in a row He says, “WHEN you pray” and not “IF you pray.” But from these brief excerpts of Scripture we learn that there are at least two classes of prayer. One is unacceptable to God, and the other is well-pleasing to Him. One is of hypocrites, the other is of a pure heart. One is done openly to be seen of men, the other is hidden to be seen of God alone. One is nothing more than vain repetition to accomplish my own ends, and the other accomplishes God’s purpose.

Now if we pray the prayer of the hypocrite we are wasting our time. God will not respond, He will not move, He will not listen to such praying. That is not to say that someone (something?) will not answer this self-centered prayer: but the answer, when and if it comes, will not come from the Father in heaven. Much praying is done in vain because the one praying has never gone to the Word to investigate the kind of prayer that is well-pleasing to God. Just as there is a worship that is “spirit-and-truth” and there is a worship which is fleshly and vain, so there is a “spirit-and-truth” sort of praying and a flesh-and-blood praying which is done in vanity.

So by the grace of God we would like to look to the Lord to teach us to pray. Let us ask Him to show us the sort of praying that is acceptable to Him.

Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

So if we look to Scripture to see "what manner of Man" He was then, we can see what manner of Man He is now.

And if we see Him then we have seen the Father also.

Wonderful truths. I hope you will join us.

Hi Elaine,

Jesus is "the Savior of the world" (Jn. 4:42; 1 Jn. 4:14).

This assumes the world needs saving!

Does it?

Yes.

Why?

If Scripture is true, the questions are:

1) What is Jesus saving us FROM?

2) What is Jesus saving us FOR?

I say "is saving" rather than "did save" because Scripture shows us that salvation is more than praying a prayer, it is growing in grace.

So I was saved, I am saved, and I will be saved!

Because Jesus did save us, is saving us, and will save us.

Yes, all three at once.

Past, present, future.

Yesterday, today, and forever.

To what purpose?

Of course, the kindergarten answer is: "He saved us from hell and for heaven."

That is what religion teaches, but it falls so far below the mark it is embarrassing.

And if that is the extent of our understanding of what Jesus means then we have surely missed the boat.

Scripture reveals a much greater mystery in Jesus than that - and the implications are universal and mind-blowing.

We'll discuss it in this during this week's online Bible study:

A Convenient Cult
by Chip Brogden
Today we have a myriad of worship choices, a multitude of golden calves located on every street, some sitting right next to each other, each one competing for people. What is the basis of their marketing message? Convenience!

God is calling on us to come up to Jerusalem and worship – that is, to worship Him in Spirit and Truth (cf. John 4). The Father seeks those true worshippers who do not think of geographical places of worship, but a Spirit-and-Truth place of worship: a spiritual place, a place of the heart. That is what it means for us to “go up to Jerusalem”. This Jerusalem is from above, it is from the heavens; we have to “go up” to it because it exists on a higher level, a greater dimension. It is a spiritual place. We read about it in the Book of Revelation, coming down from heaven, filled with the glory of God and the presence of the Lamb.

Many are responding to this call to go “up to Jerusalem” and out of Babylon, out of Churchianity, out of Organized Religion. As a result, all the Jeroboams of this world are in a state of consternation! How can we prevent this mass exodus of people from leaving our churches? Jeroboam’s concern is not for the people. His concern is not for the Lord, or for what the Lord requires. Jeroboam’s concern is only for self-preservation: the safeguarding of his leadership, the continuance of his kingdom, the prolongation of his own life.
The solution he came up with was quite resourceful...

Hi Elaine,

Jesus described John the Baptist as the greatest prophet of all.

But even the greatest prophets have moments of
I hope that's encouraging to you!

For John, that moment came when he was in prison - not for doing something wrong, but for speaking the truth.

When John was by the river Jordan, he boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.

But when John was in prison, he sent some people to ask Jesus, "Are you the One, or do we look for another?"

John's a little disappointed, disillusioned, depressed.

And that led to doubt and disbelief.

It's easy to get that way when Jesus seems to be doing miracles for everyone EXCEPT YOU.

That's a true test of faith.

Do we trust that Jesus is ENOUGH - even when He doesn't seem to deliver on His promises?

Or do we look for another?

Another person... another thing... another answer... another church... another group of friends... another teaching...

The way Jesus responds to John (and to others seeking Him) is instructive.

Join us for this week's online Bible study to see how it applies to you.

The Believer's Authority
by Chip Brogden
Scripture declares that God has given us tremendous spiritual authority in Christ. With this authority, we can confidently overcome sin, satan, and the world.

Don’t be condemned, but just let me speak the truth to you. If you’re lacking in an area, it’s not because sin is so powerful. It’s not because the devil is so powerful. It’s not because the world is so powerful. It’s only because you have failed to appreciate and recognize and walk in the authority that God has given you. That’s it! You just haven’t grown up to the point that you can walk in the assurance and the knowledge and the authority and the maturity that God has already provided for you.

So don’t blame God, don’t blame sin, don’t blame satan, don’t blame the world – and don’t blame yourself. Just go ahead and say, “OK. I recognize now that I have failed to grow up in these areas.” And ask the Lord to help you to grow, and as you do, your awareness of the truth will begin to transform you...

Hi Elaine,

When I talk about a "Christ-centered faith" what am I talking about?

By Christ-centered, I mean not self-centered or church-centered, but acknowledging Jesus as the centerpiece of everything God has done, is doing, and will do.

What do I mean by "faith?"

In this context, I mean Belief and Behavior consistent with Christ-centeredness.

I mean faith as an action verb - not just a way of believing or thinking, but a way of living.

For far too long, religion has focused on Belief - as if having the correct doctrinal statement or theology or teaching is sufficient.

It isn't!

Everyone has "beliefs" and beliefs are a dime a dozen.

(Beliefs often come disguised as opinions, evaluations, or points of view.)

Beliefs can be right or wrong, helpful or harmful, hopeful or hopeless, true or false.

And Beliefs are constantly changing, aren't they?

But Behavior is different!

Behavior tells the rest of the story.

Behavior reveals what a person truly believes.

Behavior is more reliable than Belief.

And Behavior is hard to fake and hard to change.

And that is what Jesus meant when He said, "The tree is known by its fruit."

The tree with all its leaves represents what we say we believe.

But the fruit reveals what the tree really is - the fruit is what it produces.

A good tree produces good fruit.

A bad tree (even if it looks good) produces bad fruit.

The fruit of a self-centered or church-centered faith is very evident.

So is the fruit of a Christ-centered faith.

Can you recognize the difference?

Some have to eat the fruit and get sick before they learn to stop eating it.

Some still haven't learned - they keep eating fruit from the same bad tree, thinking it will be "different" this time around.

But those who have tasted the good fruit don't go back to the bad fruit.

It's simple, really.

Hi Elaine,

What is it about Jesus that He would choose ordinary people to follow Him?

After all, He didn't choose priests, theologians, or scholars to be His disciples.

He chose four fishermen, a tax collector, a political revolutionary, a thief (who ended up betraying Him), and five more who are so generic that we only know them by name.

You have Thomas, forever remembered as "the one who doubted..."

You have Nathaniel, who almost rejected Jesus on the mistaken belief that "nothing good can come from Nazareth..."

You have Philip, freaking out over how to raise money to buy bread to feed 5,000 people...

You see my point.

I mean, it hardly sounds like the sort of disciples one would want.

And quite possibly that is the entire point.

But what did Jesus see in them?

And what does Jesus see in you and me?

Join us for the online Bible study this week as we ponder these things:

Reduced to Christ
by Chip Brogden
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
(John 3:30)

There are two Universal Spiritual Principles found in John 3:30 that express two very fundamental truths. First, that Christ must increase. This is a principle that most Christians can agree with. Are there any Christians who do not desire more of the Lord? Are there any believers who do not long for a greater expression and revelation of Christ – in their personal walk, as well as in the world around them? It is easy to align ourselves with this principle and pray in agreement with God’s Will – that Christ would be increased, and that the knowledge of Him would continue to grow and expand.

What is more difficult to affirm is the decrease of Self. Yet this principle is as powerful and as sure as the first. With more of Christ, there is less of me. With more of me, there is less of Him. And so, in order to cooperate with the first principle, we must overcome the “but” that stands between the two. “He must increase, but…” Something hinders. What gets it the way? What prevents the increase of Christ? It is me – or more accurately, the “I”, or the “Self” keeps getting in the way. And so, “I must decrease....”

Hi Elaine,

Luke reveals Jesus as the Son of Man (i.e., the Son of Adam).

Although Jesus was fully God in the flesh, to be fully human meant He had to suffer the same temptations that humans suffer.

Meaning, Jesus was not impervious to temptation.

His wilderness experience - 40 days and 40 nights of fasting, followed by being tempted by the devil - proved His humanity.

He was not magically sustained as a superhuman person.

He was hungry.

He was weak.

And when you are weak, you can be tempted.

Tempted with food, yes.

Tempted with doing something for yourself, yes.

Tempted with taking an easier way out, a less difficult way, than God's seemingly impossible way.

But unlike Adam and ever other human descendant of Adam, Jesus successfully resisted these temptations.

Only then did He announce His divine mission:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me... He has anointed Me..."

We'll take a look at those wilderness temptations and the subsequent revelation of power that Jesus revealed.

Because the path that Jesus walked is a path that we all will take (or have attempted).

And if we have failed and fallen short -which we all have - then we will at least know why, and how to get back on track again.

The Hidden Christ
by Chip Brogden
God has purposely hidden Christ and makes Him available to us only by revelation when we have humbled ourselves as children and forsaken our wisdom.

Jesus, the Christ of God, did not reveal Himself to the world at large, but to a handful of disciples. We ought to ask why He did not appear upon a mountain in blinding light, or descend in a cloud, but was born into the world as a baby in a stable.

A few shepherds worshipped Him the night He was born, Simeon and Anna blessed Him in the Temple at His dedication, and two years later some astrologers from the East worshipped Him. But no one else in all the world grasped the significance of this Child. It was hidden from 99.9% of the world...

Hi Elaine,

It may seem strange to study the birth of Jesus here in June...

But only if you never think about it apart from December.

To me, the birth of Jesus is something to celebrate every day.

This birth represents HOPE FOR ALL.

The message of Luke (as a Gentile writing for Gentiles) is that Jesus Christ (Anointed Savior) is not just Israel's Messiah, but is the Savior of All and "a light to the Gentiles."

True to this purpose, Luke reveals things in this week's chapter that are unique and only found in Luke's gospel.

We'll look at them in this week's Bible study

Join us as we explore the wonder and mystery of God becoming a Man.
