One of the women who cared for Anne Frank has sadly passed away.

Gena Turgel, who was a nurse at the concentration camp where Anne Frank died, passed away at the age of 95.

Her Legacy
Turgel was one of the many Jews that had been gathered up by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps.

In her case, she was taken in 1941 along with several of her family members.

Several of her siblings were shot and killed, and one brother went missing.

In 1944, she was forced to do a “death march” to Auschwitz-Birkenua.

Of the march, Turgel stated, “I had to go exactly as I was, the clothes I was standing in: dress, coat, boots, a thin pair of knickers, and stockings.”

She told a story of being made to march through the night, never knowing when it was going to end.

Turgel came close to being one of the many that were killed by the Nazis.

She was once marched into what she thought was a shower room, but nothing ever happened.

After being moved out of the room, she was told the room they were in actually dispensed poisonous gas, but the gas never came.

Taking Care of Anne Frank
During her time in the concentration camp, Turgel was assigned to work as a nurse in the hospital.

This is where she came to know Anne Frank.

In 1945, there was a massive outbreak of typhus.

It is estimated that more than 17,000 people lost their lives during this outbreak.

Anne Frank was one of the individuals who came down with the disease and at one point, came under the care of Turgel.

Do You Consider Turgel a Hero?
“I washed her face, gave her water to drink, and I can still see that face, her hair and how she looked, “Turgel recounted.

Turgel leaves behind three children (as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
