Reuters Slams Israel Over Plight of Gaza Christians, Ignores Hamas Persecution

A December 10 Reuters piece written by Nidal al-Mughrabi rightly draws attention to the plight of Christians in the Gaza Strip. Yet the writer comes down with a case of selective amnesia, neglecting to note the history of persecution of this tiny minority by Gaza’s rulers. Israel’s blockade of the Strip – imposed to repel incessant attempts by the Hamas terrorist group to attack the Jewish state – is assigned a disproportionate amount of the blame for the precarious state of the Palestinian enclave’s Christians.

Its Christian population has declined by two-thirds over the past 15 years, a wave of emigration fueled by economic struggles and a desire to escape fighting between militant groups and Israel.

The mass exodus is indeed the result of people wanting to get out of harm’s way. However, Reuters omits the primary cause of their misfortune: It is Hamas violence against the Christian residents of Gaza, not Israel’s ongoing battle against the terrorist organization.

Unreported: Hamas’ Abuse of Christians
The piece, Gaza jeweller struggles to sell Christmas gold, notes that Christian Palestinians:

…are feeling the economic sting of the health crisis and lockdowns. The pandemic has deepened economic hardship in Gaza, which is run by Islamist group Hamas and is under blockade by Israel. Egypt also imposes border restrictions, citing, as does Israel, security concerns.

What goes unmentioned is the systematic persecution by Hamas of its Christian residents.

Christian Population Plummets Following Israel’s Pullout From Gaza
There were approximately 5,000 Christians living in the Gaza Strip in 2005, the year Israel unilaterally dismantled 21 Israeli settlements, evacuated some 9,000 Jewish residents and pulled its army from inside the enclave. 

In 2007 Hamas violently took over the Gaza Strip, which it has ruled as the de facto Islamist authority ever since. For Hamas, Islam is not only a religion that guides its organizational aims, but also a source of law (sharia) to be imposed on all Gazans. Long before COVID-19 and the blockades, Hamas-affiliated groups like Swords of Righteousness and the Army of Islam were targeting Gazan Christians with forced conversions, discrimination in schools, attacks on businesses, and martyrdom. 

Today, there are only 1,000 Christians in Gaza.

No Blockade Around Bethlehem: The PA’s Oppression of Christians
Another strong indication that the blockade is a red herring is the situation of Christians in the city of Bethlehem, which is controlled by the Palestinian Authority. The media is whitewashing the true nature of Christian life under PA rule in the very place where one of the three great monotheistic religions began.

Christians in Bethlehem began to suffer greatly for their religious beliefs once the PA took control of the city in 1995. Life in Bethlehem has been increasingly marked by land theft with little to no legal recourse; harassment of Christian women; Christian businesses being forced to pay protection money; discrimination against Christians with regards to job opportunities; churches being looted and vandalized; and the forced conversions of Christians.

The result, similar to Gaza, was emigration en masse. In 1947, Christians comprised about 85% of the city’s population, and that figure has plunged to approximately 16%.

One recent study on the global persecution of Christians ranked the “Palestinian Territories” 49th out of 50. According to the report, “Islamic oppression” is fueling this tyranny against a religious minority. In addition, the study reveals that “Islamic extremist militants are also present in the West Bank, causing Christians to fear being attacked,” and that the persecution is particularly brutal for converts to Christianity.

Gaza’s Christians: ‘Tis the Season to Remember
The Reuters article opted to not add a couple of lines of relevant context about the alarming situation of Gaza’s tiny, vulnerable Christian population. 

With the holiday season upon us, it is worthwhile to remember the persecution of Palestinian Christians by Islamists, something that has little to do with Israel, the blockade or COVID-19.

Electronic Intifada’s Jihad Against Former WaPo Israel Correspondent

Critiquing Electronic Intifada (EI), whose raison d’etre, as the name denotes, is to wage digital war against Israel, might be viewed as futile. The site will continue to to be virulently anti-Zionist and, by default, simply mentioning it brings unwarranted attention to its existence.

Case in point: Ali Abunimah, one of EI’s co-founders, has described Zionism as “a dying project, in retreat,” and is a leading proponent of a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — essentially, a recipe for the destruction of the Jewish state’s inherent purpose and resulting character.

Generally, enough said.

However, an exception must be made in this case given HonestReporting’s core mission of not only criticizing journalists when they get the facts wrong, but also commending them when they get the story right or are unjustly attacked. This applies to EI’s slandering of well-respected former Jerusalem-based Washington Post correspondent Ruth Eglash, who recently left the newspaper to become Chief Communications Officer and Advisor to Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations and incoming Ambassador to the United States.

In a December 1 article, Washington Post reporter moves from covering Israel to working for it, author Michael F. Brown perfectly encapsulates Electronic Intifada’s insidiousness and outright opposition to Jewish self-determination.

To begin with, he immediately ventures into conspiratorial territory, implying that Eglash was a stooge planted by the Israeli government. In this respect, the first source referenced is Max Blumenthal, a vicious anti-Zionist who pals around with terrorists. A tweet by Blumenthal embedded in the piece suggests that, “Eglash and her husband were both professional Israeli propagandists when the Washington Post hired her….”

Proof? No pudding provided.

Thereafter, Michael F. Brown gets down to business.

His initial “evidence” of Eglash’s pro-Israel bent consists of her “like” of a tweet by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, Yair, which suggested that left-wing groups like Black Lives Matter pose a bigger threat to the Jewish state’s continued existence than hard-right neo-Nazis.

Whether one agrees with this or not, it is hardly an example of bias. Rather, it is a position in an ongoing, legitimate debate.

Next comes a slew of Eglash’s personal social media posts related mainly to the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against Israel, which Michael F. Brown claims “amplified” statements by Erdan that he simply does not agree with. This includes Erdan’s widely held belief that BDS is antisemitic and annihilationist in nature because its founder and some of its current leaders openly call for the eradication of the one and only Jewish state.

Most tellingly, though, Michael F. Brown fails to include even one example from Eglash’s years-long tenure writing at the Post that he construes as “pro-Israel.”

Not a sentence. Not a word.

This makes crystal clear that the Electronic Intifada article is nothing more than a hatchet job masquerading as ostensible concern over the ethics of a journalist moving into the public sector, as if such a transition is anyways uncommon.

Perhaps Michael F. Brown is unaware that recently deceased Saeb Erekat, the former secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, was for over a decade a chief editor at the Al Quds newspaper prior to his entry into politics.

But nothing to see there.

Additionally, if EI was, in fact, actually concerned about biased journalism, then its staff might at some point have written about former colleague Diaa Hadid. After leaving EI, she for two-odd years, starting in 2015, worked as a New York Times correspondent based in the eastern part of Jerusalem.

During her time at the “paper of record,” Hadid over and over again defamed Israel, leading to multiple corrections to her work.

Nobody on Earth is devoid of opinions, and perhaps a journalist’s most important responsibility is to ensure they do not bleed into his/her reporting.

Ironically, by not providing any examples of perceived bias in Eglash’s work, Michael F. Brown in a roundabout and obviously unintentional way effectively confirms that she lived up to this standard.

In doing so, Michael F. Brown also unwittingly reveals that he is the real propagandist.

Terrorists, just like murderers and war criminals, are defined by their acts of violence, no matter what they do before or after. The media would never describe Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein as a celebrity, so why should that be the way that a Palestinian terrorist is framed by the BBC?

The media have a responsibility to not blur the lines between terrorism and celebrity status.
