Donald Trump’s historic election upset was the work of God, Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Wednesday.
Trump’s press secretary ended any speculation about her faith when she told the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) that God has a purpose for everyone and the destiny God had in mind for Trump was for him to be president.
Sanders: God wanted Trump to win
Sanders, who is a Christian, touched on her faith, Trump’s evangelical base, and her conviction that God has a purpose for everyone in her conversation with David Brody and Jennifer Wishon. When asked by Brody for a “spiritual perspective” on Trump’s presidency, the famously strong-willed press secretary echoed the sentiment popular among Trump’s evangelical base that Trump’s victory was God’s will.
“I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times and I think that He wanted Donald Trump to become president,” Sanders said. “That’s why he’s here and I think that he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things that people of faith really care about.”
Trump is hardly an altar boy, and his detractors have mocked his evangelical supporters for standing behind a man who doesn’t seem to have much knowledge of the Bible. But Sanders pointed to Trump’s track record on appointing conservative judges to explain why many Christians have stood behind 45.
“There’s a reason evangelicals are sticking with the president, and that’s because he’s delivered on all the things he said he would do,” Sanders said.
Additionally, after Trump confirmed two conservative justices to the Supreme Court, many on the left fear that Roe v. Wade — a 1973 Supreme Court case that effectively legalized abortion — has never been in greater jeopardy.
Who are Dems to talk about morality?
But despite Trump’s push to nominate judges with Christian principles, America remains troubled. New York and now Virginia moved to pass extreme, late-term abortion laws earlier this month that Sanders said exposed the hypocrisy of Democrats who endorse butchery of the unborn while preaching about the “immorality” of border security.
“Honestly, it’s hard at this point to even take a lecture from Democrats on what’s moral and what isn’t. People who are willing to allow legislation to pass supporting late-term abortion,” Sanders lamented of Dems.
“But the idea that protecting the people of your country, which is the fundamental duty of being president of the United States, would in some way be immoral is a ridiculous charge,” the press secretary added. “I would think Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi may even regret making that comment because she’s seen how ridiculous that sounds and how the evidence is so contrary to that comment.”
Sanders also talked about the strength she derives from her faith in her talk with CBN.
“The goal is to be the best version of who God created us and who he called us to be,” Sanders said. “Some days I do that better than others, but the goal is always to be open about my faith.”
