Twelve Tribes of Israel - Wikipedia
The Twelve Tribes of Israel (Hebrew: שִׁבְטֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל, romanized: Šīḇṭēy Yīsrāʾēl, lit. 'Tribes of Israel') are, according to Hebrew scriptures, the descendants of the biblical patriarch Jacob (also known as Israel), who collectively form the Israelite nation.

Abraham and Sarah were the first Jews, who, if they were real historical people, lived around 2,000 BCE, first in modern-day Iraq, and later in what is now Israel, which at the time was called Canaan. God promised them the land, and numerous descendants, in exchange for worshiping God.

They had a son, Isaac (Abraham also fathered Ishmael, whose descendants, in the story, became the Arabs).

Isaac had twin boys: Esau and Jacob. Jacob, the younger but more worthy son, managed to trick his brother out of the birthright he would normally be due as first-born. Esau went off to be the patriarch of the Edomites (known in Greek as the Idumeans), a local tribe that lived in modern-day Jordan until the much later revolt against the Romans.

Jacob was re-promised everything that had been promised to his grandparents, and got a new name: Israel.

Jacob/Israel had twelve sons (and at least one daughter): these are The Twelve Tribes of Israel:
Reuben Simeon Levi Judah Issachar Zebulun Dan Naphtali Gad Asher Joseph Benjamin
These sons, and Jacob, traveled down to Egypt, the story of which was made into an excellent musical starring Donny Osmond.......
Anyway, the Jews stayed long enough to be enslaved. After about 400 years of this, they left Egypt under the leadership of Moses and, later, Joshua, and resettled in Canaan in a loose confederation of tribes. Each tribe got its own area to live in:

You’ll note that the names on the map are a bit different: Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph, got a double-portion through HIS sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, so they each got their own territory. Meanwhile, the priestly tribe of Levi didn’t get land, but instead relied upon the tithes of the others for support. So you still end up with twelve tribes, but they’re twelve DIFFERENT tribes. This is important for later.

Around 1100 BCE, this confederation coalesced into the United Monarchy, first under King Saul (who was not a very good king), and then under David (who was an excellent king). David’s son, Solomon, also presided over this kingdom and built the First Temple in Jerusalem, and the Levites mostly relocated there to do their priestly thing.

Biblical History of the 12 Tribes of Israel
In a brief recap, Jacob (Israel) fathered 12 sons, who became the progenitors of the 12 Tribes of Israel. Moses led these Israelites out of Egypt, while Joshua led them in the conquest of Canaan. They divided Canaan between themselves and were divided for many years. As the Hebrew Bible narrates, the Israelites unified due to the threat of foreign invasion, selecting Saul from the Tribe of Benjamin to rule over them. Saul is a flawed king who is envious of the hero David, who replaces Saul's son after a civil war. David was a member of the House of Judah. David was succeeded by his son Solomon, who built a great temple to God in the city of Jerusalem that was funded with elevated taxes.
