UN Chief: No ‘Concrete Evidence’ of Kidnapping
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson angered Israelis by saying the UN has no evidence that the kidnapping of three Israeli boys had actually occurred.
Farhan Haq, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said on Tuesday that the United Nations has no “concrete evidence” that three missing Israeli youths – Eyal Yifrah, Naftali Frankel and Gilad Sha’ar – were kidnapped.
Haq’s statement was seemingly in response to a plea earlier that day from Israeli Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor for a meaningful course of action regarding this crisis as well as a letter drafted Monday by Member of Kensset Orly Levi-Abekasis demanding immediate assistance in rescuing the Israeli teens.
“The abduction constitutes a profound infringement of conventions and a blatant violation of the right of Israeli children to lead a peaceful, unthreatened life,” the letter to Ban Ki-moon stated. “These are not soldiers, nor were they engaged in battle – they are three young adolescents who should have been dividing their time between preparation for their final exams and their family circle.
“As the head of the United Nations, I sincerely hope you will act in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

On Saturday, Ban Ki-moon equated the abduction of innocent Jewish children to Israel’s air strikes in Hamas-run Gaza, from where hundreds of rockets have been fired continuously into southern Israel, aiming at civilians. The UN chief expressed “deep concern on the trend toward violence on the ground and attendant loss of life, including today of a child in Gaza as a result of a recent Israeli airstrike.”

Calling on the Security Council and the international community on Tuesday to “unequivocally condemn the kidnapping and ensure that the boys return home to their families,” Prosor said:
“I ask the international community: Where are you?”
Since Thursday evening, Israelis “have been holding their breath,” waiting for news about the kidnapped boys,” Prosor said, adding that the abduction took place 10 days after Fatah and Hamas had formed a unity government.
“All those who rushed to bless this marriage should look into the eyes of the heartbroken parents and take responsibility by condemning the kidnapping,” Prosor declared.
Israeli Envoy Slams Weak World Response to Abduction
He also hinted at the danger to the West in general that would result from neglecting to take the “only responsible course of action” against terror, which, he explained, means to “disarm Hamas, stop the smuggling and manufacturing of weapons and prevent rocket fire from Gaza into Israel.”

In an interview Wednesday morning with Israel Army Radio, Prosor lamented the “weak” world response to the abduction of innocent children who were on their way home from school, pointing to anti-Israel sentiment.
“Legitimate criticism [of Israeli policy] is fine and dandy, but we are not prepared to accept the delegitimization and dehumanization of the State of Israel,” Prosor stated.

Kidnapped Teens Assumed to be Alive
In a meeting with the families of three abducted teens, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said the assumption is that the boys are alive.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon met Wednesday with the parents of kidnapped boys Eyal Yifrah, Naftali Frankel and Gilad Sha’ar. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the police and the military, who are in constant contact with the families.
During the meeting, Ya’alon updated the families on the investigation and briefed them on the details of the operation to trace the boys and capture the kidnappers, which has been in action since last Friday.
Ya’alon to Families: ‘Much Patience is Required’
Ya’alon told the families: “We are meeting so I can update you on the latest developments. I wish first of all to strengthen you. You convey strength and steadfastness. During events such as this, one of the most important elements is your strong stance, which is admirable. We are in the midst of an operation aimed at reaching the kidnappers and rescuing the boys. The campaign is constantly evolving, day and night, and many activities are taking place in the field, and as long as we have no other proof, our assumption is that the boys are alive. Until now no one has taken responsibility, and no demands have been presented.”
Nothing Restricts Operation to Rescue the Boys
“The objective of the actions we are taking is to reach the kidnappers and the boys as quickly as possible,” Ya’alon said. “We are focusing massive intelligence and operational efforts, including meticulous searches of the area. Ahead of us, first and foremost you and I, lay long and hard hours of stress, doubt and uncertainty. We do not know how long this will last, and much patience is required.”

Relating to the extent of the operation, Ya’alon said: “There is nothing that restricts the operation. All intelligence and operational capabilities of the IDF, the Shabak and Israel Police have priority in favor of this operation. We will not rest until we lay our hands on the kidnappers and recover the boys.”
Ya’alon stated that the operation has now taken on a broader scope: “We have taken several actions in parallel also intended to hurt Hamas in Judea and Samaria. Tonight we arrested Hamas members discharged in the Shalit deal, with the clear message that not only are we working to free the boys, but also when there is a kidnapping we will put back in prison those who we have previously released.”

Time to Topple the Palestinian Authority

Instead of allowing the terrorists of Fatah and Hamas free rein in various parts of Judea and Samaria, let’s finally put an end to the experiment that was the Palestinian Authority and dismantle it.
For over two decades, ever since the signing of the Oslo Accords, Israel has had to endure one atrocity after another at the hands of Palestinian terrorists. Enough already! We were told that patience was in order, even as our ostensible peace partners sent young men strapped with explosive vests to blow up buses in rush hour and dispatched masked militants to fire rockets at Israeli towns and cities.
Just a few more concessions, it was said, and the Palestinians would forgo violence, finally stop likening Israel to the Nazis and cease calling for attacks in their official media. Well, I don’t know about you, but my patience ran out a long time ago.

The kidnapping of three Jewish teenagers by Palestinian terrorists last week is a wake-up call to Israeli society.
This bestial act is a painful reminder of a simple yet incontrovertible truth: our struggle with the Palestinians is not a battle over borders, it is a clash of civilizations. It is a contest between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and falsehood. It will not be solved by signing a piece of paper, holding a joint press conference, or even sharing a couple of beers.
So instead of continuing to pretend otherwise, let’s put an end to this tragedy once and for all. It is time to topple the Palestinian Authority and reassert full Israeli military control over all of Judea and Samaria.
The Palestinians have proven that they do not want peace, are not interested in it and prefer to keep the flames of hatred alive. Just look at how news of the kidnapping was received in the areas currently under its rule.
Throughout the territories, Palestinian men, women and children were photographed handing out sweets to celebrate that three young Israelis had been snatched. There were no voices of condemnation or criticism, no Palestinian marches or protests against such a vile act, and no calls from the Palestinian leadership to refrain from harming innocent Israeli children. It says a lot about Palestinian society that their reaction to the kidnappings was one of delight rather than disgust.
How much longer must we tolerate such barbarism? For the sake of our future, we cannot and must not allow a hostile terrorist entity to continue to take root and grow in Judea and Samaria. If the Fatah-Hamas unity government that now rules in Ramallah is allowed to endure, it will pose a direct threat to the heart of the country.
The very existence of the Palestinian Authority provides terrorists with a safe haven and a launching pad, a place where they can plot, train and perpetrate with virtual impunity.
Complete Israeli military control is simply the surest way to ensure that the Palestinian terrorist threat is contained.
Will there be a price to pay diplomatically? Absolutely. And will it be difficult to implement? For sure.
But if one has to choose between a bad solution and a worse one, then the choice to be made is obvious.
Don’t let the prattle in the media about other matters divert your attention from this, which is the underlying core issue. Indeed, on Sunday morning, one of Israel’s leading radio news shows devoted a large portion of its program to discussing the danger to Jews of hitchhiking in Judea and Samaria. Activists and experts spoke authoritatively about the need to improve public transportation, asserting that increasing its frequency and availability would prevent similar abductions from taking place in the future.
That may be true, but it misses the point entirely.
Let’s get one thing straight: the kidnapping of three Israeli teens is not a transportation problem, it is a terrorism problem.
And the only way to solve it is to tackle the terrorist threat.
Doing so means denying the terrorists the territory from which they continue to attack us. This has been a critical element in the US war on terror, and it should be part of ours as well.
In June 2011, the White House released its “National Strategy for Counterterrorism,” one of the “overarching goals” of which was to “eliminate safe havens.” Noting that terror organizations such as al-Qaida and others “rely on the physical sanctuary of ungoverned or poorly governed territories, where the absence of state control permits terrorists to travel, train, and engage in plotting,” the document stresses that it is important “to constrict the space available to terrorist networks.” And that is precisely what Israel needs to do now.
Instead of allowing the terrorists of Fatah and Hamas free rein in various parts of Judea and Samaria, let’s finally put an end to the experiment that was the Palestinian Authority and dismantle it.
Rather than appeasing the terrorists, it is time to oppose them. Reasserting full Israeli control over the territories may sound like a frightening prospect to some. But at this point, there is no other choice.

Israel’s Economy Minister Naftali Bennett warned the radical Islamic terror group Hamas on Tuesday that its members would find “a ticket to hell” should it continue to carry out acts of terror against Israel.
Hamas, who Israel says is responsible behind the recent kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers, has increased its violent rhetoric against Israel and recently called on its members to carry out terror attacks against Israelis and IDF soldiers in Judea and Samaria.

Israel has a death penalty on the books, but it to date has been reserved for Nazi war criminals and has only been applied to Adolf Eichmann, back in 1962. However, the law is written to include all genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, treason, and crimes against the Jewish People during wartime, and the current Arab-Israeli conflict can be considered a war. Thus, said Construction and Housing Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home), it should be applied to terrorists, too. Ariel opposes negotiating with Hamas for the release of the missing boys.

Arab MK Hanin Zoabi (United Arab List) told Radio Tel Aviv Tuesday morning that the kidnappers of the three abducted Israeli teens are “not terrorists.”
In her “humble opinion,” Zoabi said that the kidnappers had no choice but to abduct the three boys.

“We are not acting blindly and without guidance,” the official said. “The IDF is thoroughly familiar with Hamas’ infrastructure in Hebron. Those involved in the kidnappings were prisoners in Israeli institutions and were released,” which gave Israeli authorities insights and information on their terror activities.
So far, no authenticated source has taken responsibility for the kidnappings. Flyers that were circulated in Hevron on Friday claiming responsibility in the name of an unknown local terror group were thought not to be authentic.
.Earlier Sunday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu pegged Hamas as being behind the kidnappings of Eyal Yifrah, Gilad Sha’ar and Naftali Frenkel, the three teens who were apparently snatched or otherwise enticed to enter a vehicle as they were hitchhiking in Gush Etzion Thursday night. Hamas has denied the allegations.
Speaking to reporters, the IDF official said that soldiers had surrounded and closed off several villages in the Hevron area. There is currently a general closure in effect for the entire Hevron area. In addition, the IDF has set up roadblocks and is checking cars thoroughly.
“Hamas is facing a tough situation in Judea and Samaria,” the official said. “We were able to foil 30 kidnapping attempts in the past year and a half. Most of those planned kidnappings were aimed at soldiers. Unfortunately, this time our prevention efforts were not successful.”
UPDATE: A breaking news report has indicated that the vehicle that was apparently used for the abduction has been found. The cell phone of one the kidnapped teenagers has been recovered, as well as other personal items belonging to the boys.

The Israel Air Force successfully carried out a targeted strike in the northern Gaza Strip Wednesday against a Hamas-affiliated Salafist terrorist.
In a statement by the IDF, the airstrike was a targeted hit against a “global Jihad-affiliated terrorist,” carried out with the help of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service.
Palestinian Authority based media confirmed that one person was killed and two others injured as a result of the strike.

The United States condemned Wednesday’s rocket attack on Israel as “unprovoked aggression,” but said that despite the terror attack, it would continue to work with the new Palestinian government.
“We condemn all rocket fire from Gaza. It is unprovoked aggression against civilian targets and is totally unacceptable,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Early Wednesday morning, a Kassam rocket was fired from terrorists in the Gaza Strip. The rocket exploded in southern Israel, near a major highway. In response to the attack, the Israel Air Force carried out a targeted strike against a Hamas-affiliated Jihadist Wednesday night in Gaza.
Israel stated that it holds the Palestinian Authority responsible for the rocket attack, regardless of PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s condemnation. In a statement release by his office, Abbas said that Israel should continue to uphold its ceasefire with Hamas and that the Palestinian people should not give Israel an excuse to attack the Gaza Strip.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers of the US House of Representatives Middle East subcommittee are demanding from the secretary to explain why the US would continue dealing with the Palestinian Authority, knowing that the Hamas terror organization is now a part of the government.
The committee sent a letter to Kerry seeking clarity on what justifications the Obama administration is acting on in dealing with a designated terror organization.

In an unprecedented incident, the Palestinian Authority has arrested four anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) activists in Ramallah about two weeks ago.
The four, Zeid Shuaibi, Abdel Jawad Hamayel, Fadi Quran and Fajr Harb, were arrested on charges of “provoking riots and the breach of public tranquility.” The four demonstrated against an Indian dance group performing in Ramallah that performed in Tel Aviv as well. The protesters accused the Indian dancers of violating their campaign for boycotting Israel, claiming that their appearance in Tel Aviv was a form of “normalization” with Israel. The incident seriously embarrassed the Palestinian Authority leadership and resulted in a decision to prosecute the four BDS activists. The four appeared in court on May 28th to face the charges against them. However, the trial was postponed until July 14th because state witnesses, policemen, failed to appear in court.

Last Friday, Breaking the Silence supporters read out testimonies of soldiers about the IDF’s misdeeds. A long time ago, when the organization first became active, I was among those who came to its defense. Because when there are exceptions, they must be exposed. They must not be concealed.
I believed at the time, and others still believe, that the organization’s goal is to fix, improve and even strengthen the IDF. The problem is that something happened in the past decade.

IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz warned of the growing security challenges facing Israel at the annual Herzliya Conference.
Gantz argued that the Syrian civil war, which has now entered its fourth year, poses a serious threat to Israel. According to Israeli intelligence, Gantz revealed that Russia is arming the Syrian army under the control of President Bashar Assad.

According to Gantz, rule of law in Syria “is crashing like a house of cards. As long as Assad is there, we won’t see a meaningful solution because they [the rebels are fighting against him and not for the future.”
The chief of staff warned of two major dangers Israel faces from the Syrian conflict. The first is Assad’s strengthening relationship with radical Iran and Hezbollah. The second is the ever increasing, far reaching Global Jihad Islamist terror movement.

Israel’s Security Cabinet has unanimously agreed to reject the new Palestinian unity government sworn in on Monday in Ramallah. The new government, backed by the Hamas terrorist organization, has garnered support from the US and EU despite designating Hamas as a sponsor of terrorism.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s office, Israel will “not negotiate with a Palestinian government with backing from Hamas, a terrorist organization which calls for the destruction of Israel.”
The security cabinet has authorized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “impose additional sanctions on the Palestinian Authority,” adding to the diplomatic and economic sanctions already in place.

One day in 1997, while working as Deputy Communications Director for then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Michael Freund received a letter that caught his attention. He didn’t know it then but it would change the course of his life. It was sent by a small community in northeastern India called Bnei Menashe, who claimed they were descendants of one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel and who wished to return to Israel.
Freund volunteered to help them and soon discovered that there are “lost” Jews all around the world seeking to reconnect with their Jewish roots. He founded Israel Returns, an organization that searches for and assists the Lost Tribes of Israel and other “hidden Jews” seeking to return to Zion.

JERUSALEM – Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara hosted last night (Jun. 1) the fifth session of the Shmuel Ben-Artzi Tanach, (Bible) Study Circle at their official residence in Jerusalem. The Tanach Study Circle is named after the Prime Minister’s late father-in-law, who passed away last November, and was a Tanach teacher and researcher.
The Tanach Study Circle, held in cooperation with the Menachem Begin Heritage Center, was reinstated two years ago, renewing a tradition started by Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, and which was continued by its sixth, Menachem Begin. This evening’s meeting focused on the Book of Ruth, which will be read on Shavuot later this week.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “I have always thought and believed that the Tanach is the foundation of our existence here. Otherwise we would be somewhere else or nowhere at all. The influence of the written words has not lessened over the generations; on the contrary, their strength has only increased. Therefore, I think that we need – here in the Prime Minister’s Residence – to focus on the Tanach every few months.”

US Abandons Israel for Terrorists

The US had delivered a major blow to its Israeli ally after announcing that the US government would work with the new Palestinian unity government backed by the Hamas terrorist organization.
The new government, which was sworn in on Monday in Ramallah, will be watched “closely” by the US to ensure that the new government is upholding principles of non-violence. The US said that aid to the Palestinian Authority, in the amount of some $440 million, would not be cut.
Israel has rejected outright the Hamas-backed Palestinian government and has stated that it would not negotiate with the new leadership. Hamas, designated by Israel, the US and the EU as a terrorist organization, has vowed to destroy Israel and refuses to renounce the use of violence and terror.

The stance of the US is in direct conflict with that of Israel, increasing tensions between the two allies. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stated on Monday that Washington believes the PA President Mahmoud Abbas has “formed an interim technocratic government…that does not include members affiliated with Hamas.”
“With what we know now, we will work with the government,” Psaki stated. She added that the US “will continue to evaluate the composition and policies of the new government and if needed we’ll modify our approach.”
She warned that the Obama administration would be “watching carefully to make sure” that the unity government uphold preconditions to continue receiving aid. On Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Abbas in a phone call and “expressed concerns about Hamas’s role in any such government.”
The secretary of state called on Abbas and the new government to “commit to the principles of nonviolence, recognition of the state of Israel and acceptance of previous agreements with it.” Abbas has pledged to uphold the conditions despite Hamas’s refusal to ratify them.
Psaki refused to comment on the possibility of future peace talks, other than saying that “it is ultimately up to the parties…to make the difficult decisions about coming to the negotiating table.”
Hamas, a radical Islamist terror organization, would still be responsible for any rocket attacks emanating from the Gaza Strip, Psaki clarified. “We expect the PA to do everything in its power to prevent attacks from Gaza, but we understand that the Gaza Strip is under the control of Hamas.”
Upon the announcement of US support for the unity government, the EU’s top envoy to the US announced that it too was prepared to work with the new Palestinian leadership.
“We never said we would not,” Ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida said. “It’s a question of substance rather than the question of composition of the government.”
Vale de Almeida said the EU was insisting the new government recognize Israel’s right to exist and negotiate a peace agreement. “We are in favor of Palestinian recognition. We think it’s an important element in the process to bringing a long-term solution – but not at any price. It has to be based on respect for a certain number of values,” he stated.
The Israeli government has come out strongly against the new Palestinian government. Israeli officials criticized the US for backing a government backed by Hamas and said that the US should be urging Abbas to dissolve his agreement with the terror organization.
“We are deeply disappointed by the comments of the State Department regarding working with the Palestinian unity government. This Palestinian government is a government backed by Hamas, which is a terror organization committed to Israel’s destruction,” Israeli officials said.
“If the US administration wanted to advance peace, it should be calling on Abbas to end his pact with Hamas and return to peace talks with Israel,” they added. “Instead, it is enabling Abbas to believe that it is acceptable to form a government with a terrorist organization.”

Palestinian Unity Government Formed; Outgoing Hamas Leader Praises ‘Resistance’ Capabilities
Outgoing Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, in praising the new Palestinian unity government, boasted of the “advanced resistance” capabilities of the terror group. Monday was a “historic day for the Palestinian people,” outgoing Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh declared regarding the swearing in of a new unity government in Ramallah based on the reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.

Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by both Israel and the United States, as well as Great Britain, the European Union and Japan. Furthermore, Hamas has consistently called for the destruction of the Jewish State.
“Today, there is an army in the figure of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades,” Haniyeh stated in his farewell speech in Gaza City. “We are leaving the government, but the resistance is advanced.”
Until the very last minute, Hamas refused to join the coalition government on the grounds that it would not have a Ministry of Prisoner Affairs. Fatah finally compromised by agreeing to subsume the ministry under the responsibilities of the new prime minister, Rami Al-Hamdallah, and Hamas joined the government. In so doing, both parties hope for greater solidarity between the West Bank and Gaza.
Israeli Security Cabinet Shuns Palestinian Unity Government
In an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday night, Israel determined that it would suspend all peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority because of its affiliation with Hamas, and that it would reduce the funds it gives to the PA.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently exhorting international leaders to refrain from being quick to recognize the new Palestinian government. He professed to find it strange that European governments who decry the murders at the Brussels Jewish museum can speak “in friendly tones about a unity government with Hamas, a terror group that carries out and praises such crimes.”
Israel’s Security Cabinet on Monday evening unanimously decided:
1. To continue acting in accordance with its decision on April 24 not negotiate with a Palestinian government that relies on Hamas, a terrorist organization which calls for the destruction of Israel;
2. To act, including in the international arena, against the participation of terrorist organizations in elections;
3. To authorize the Prime Minister to impose additional sanctions on the Palestinian Authority;
4. To hold the Palestinian Authority responsible for all actions that harm the security of Israel which originate in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip; and
5. To form a team to consider ways of action given the new reality that has been created and ahead of diplomatic and security situations that will be created in the future.
Netanyahu: Fatah Leader ‘Says Yes to Terrorism’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed:
“Today, Abu Mazen [aka Mahmoud Abbas] said yes to terrorism and no to peace. This is the direct continuation of Abu Mazen’s policy of refusing peace. While Israel has carried out courageous and painful steps on behalf of the diplomatic process and continues to be committed to peace, Abu Mazen has refused to extend the negotiations, has rejected the American framework document, continues to incite against Israel, has unilaterally acceded to UN treaties and has now forged a pact with the Hamas terrorist organization.
“Abu Mazen has forged a pact with the Hamas organization, which is responsible for the murder of over 1,000 innocent Israelis and the firing of thousands of missiles at Israeli cities.
“Abu Mazen has forged a pact with Hamas, an organization which has been declared a terrorist organization in the US, Europe, Egypt and throughout the world, and which completely rejects the international community’s conditions. The international community needs to treat it accordingly.
“In recent days, the leaders of the Hamas terrorist organization have reiterated their commitment to the path of terrorism and to the elimination of the State of Israel.
“The agreement with Hamas makes Abu Mazen directly responsible for the terrorism emanating from Gaza.
“The State of Israel will not conduct diplomatic negotiations with a Palestinian government that relies on Hamas, a terrorist organization that calls for the destruction of Israel.”

Netanyahu: Fatah Leader ‘Says Yes to Terrorism’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed:
“Today, Abu Mazen [aka Mahmoud Abbas] said yes to terrorism and no to peace. This is the direct continuation of Abu Mazen’s policy of refusing peace. While Israel has carried out courageous and painful steps on behalf of the diplomatic process and continues to be committed to peace, Abu Mazen has refused to extend the negotiations, has rejected the American framework document, continues to incite against Israel, has unilaterally acceded to UN treaties and has now forged a pact with the Hamas terrorist organization.
“Abu Mazen has forged a pact with the Hamas organization, which is responsible for the murder of over 1,000 innocent Israelis and the firing of thousands of missiles at Israeli cities.
“Abu Mazen has forged a pact with Hamas, an organization which has been declared a terrorist organization in the US, Europe, Egypt and throughout the world, and which completely rejects the international community’s conditions. The international community needs to treat it accordingly.
“In recent days, the leaders of the Hamas terrorist organization have reiterated their commitment to the path of terrorism and to the elimination of the State of Israel.
“The agreement with Hamas makes Abu Mazen directly responsible for the terrorism emanating from Gaza.
“The State of Israel will not conduct diplomatic negotiations with a Palestinian government that relies on Hamas, a terrorist organization that calls for the destruction of Israel.”

Israel had denied three Palestinian leaders from Gaza travel visas to Ramallah. The three men, who are expected to be appointed ministers in the upcoming Fatah-Hamas unity government, asked to travel to the West Bank via Israeli territory to take part in a ceremony officially announcing the new government.
Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, head of COGAT, the IDF’s civil administration in the West Bank, is said to have personally denied the requests, Israel Radio reported.
On Saturday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas stated that the new Palestinian unity government would be announced on Monday. Abbas said that following some delay over who would lead the foreign ministry, leaders of the new government would be formally presented at the start of the week.
He also added that Israel informed the Palestinians that it would “boycott the government.” Israel has begun implementing punitive measures on the PA as a result of the unity agreement.
Abbas threatened Israel that he and his new government would “react to any Israeli action” that Israel may take against the new government, such as withholding some $100 million in monthly taxes and customs Israel collects on behalf of the PA.
“They are going to withhold our money,” Abbas said. “This is our money, not aid from Israel, and we will not stay silent. They want to punish us because we have agreed with Hamas on this government, which is part of our people.”
However, a Hamas spokesman said on Sunday that the two sides have yet to finalize the agreement. Sami Abu Zuhri said that new reports of launching the new government on this week were “unilateral” and that “there is still disagreement over some points that need to be addressed,” Ma’an News Agency reported.
In April, rivaling Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah announced a reconciliation agreement seeking to form a united front against Israel. Gaza-based Hamas, an Islamist terror organization, has vowed to destroy Israel and refuses to renounce violent.
Under the deal, brokered by political leaders from both sides, an “independent government” of technocrats would usher in a new area for Palestinians, as well as long delayed elections.
Upon announcement of the unity agreement, Israel formally cancelled all peace negotiations with the Palestinians, saying it would not negotiate with any government backed by Hamas. Israel has imposed various diplomatic and economic sanctions on the PA while the US has threatened to cut all aid.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of four people last week at the Jewish Museum in Brussels. 29-year-old French citizen Mehdi Nemmouche from the northern French town of Roubaix was captured Friday in Marseilles, apparently in possession of a Kalashnikov rifle and a handgun similar to those seen in the video footage of the shooting.
Nemmouche is being investigated for ties to terrorism and Syrian jihadists. He visted Syria last in 2013.
He is being detained on charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, according to AFP sources.
The motive for the attack is yet unclear, and may be anti-Semitic or nationalistic in nature. The identities of two of the victims, as well as Nemmouche’s history, have aroused suspicions of the latter.
Mira and Emmanuel Riva, two of the victims from Tel Aviv, had worked for the Israeli government in the past, though only in administrative and accounting positions. According to Deputy public prosecutor Ine Van Wymersch, that, as well as the speed and efficiency of the attack, raise the possibility of terrorist motivations.
The two other victims include a museum volunteer and an employee.
This attack is the first in over 30 years on Belgian soil, and is generating fears that violent anti-Semitism is making a comeback in Europe.
The museum has been closed for the investigation, but French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, and Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo visited the museum in Brussels on Tuesday, meeting with Jewish leaders and bowing their heads as a local rabbi recited a prayer, reports AFP.

Kerry Reportedly to Meet with Abbas in Jordan

Kerry is headed to Jordan this week to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
According to Jordanian newspaper Al-Arab Al-Yawm, which cited Israeli media, Kerry is to arrive in Amman on Wednesday to meet with Abbas and Jordanian officials. Discussions will supposedly center on the recently announced Palestinian unity government.
As of now, the US State Department has not confirmed the trip. Initial reports have not clarified whether Kerry would visit Israel while in the region.
Kerry’s visit would come as a surprise move in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. In May, Kerry announced that he had given up on the peace process and the fate of peace now lies in the hands of Israel and the Palestinians .
The last round of US brokered peace talks collapsed in April after a surprise reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah, the ruling party in the PLO. Ending many years of a bitter rivalry, the two groups united in attempts to force Israel to concede to Palestinian demands.
The new government, which Abbas has stated would be an “independent government” comprised of technocrats, is reported to be officially announced later this week. On Sunday, the IDF refused travel permits for three Hamas leaders who sought to travel via Israeli territory to Ramallah to take part in upcoming celebrations announcing the new government.
Israel suspended all peace talks with the PA upon announcement of the unity agreement, saying that it would not negotiate with any government backed by Hamas. The Gaza-based terrorist organization has vowed to wipe Israel off the map and has refused to renounce violence.
At the start of this week’s cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned world leaders that recognizing the new Palestinian government would lead to increased terrorist around the world.
Netanyahu called on “all responsible agents in the international community not to rush to recognize a Palestinian government that relies on Hamas.”
The US, which has designated Hamas a terrorist organization, has threatened the PA that should it unite with the radical Islamist terror organization, it would cut all aid in the form of $440 million annually.

Jews, Get Out of Europe
Jews need to give up on Europe. For good. To leave it and not go back to it (to live, at least) for a long time, if ever. If the Holocaust was not enough to convince some Jews that they are not wanted in Europe; if, seven decades later, the situation is one where a rabbi in one of the less antisemitic countries cannot walk the streets without being called “dirty Jew,” is it not time to conclude that one is in the wrong place?
Prayer Denied: The Temple Mount Travesty
Prayer on the Temple Mount is just one element of the wider movement to strip Judaism from Jerusalem. This undermines the foundation of both Judaism and Christianity. If there was no Temple on the 35-acre man-made plateau, all the archeological proof notwithstanding, where was it that the Jewish people brought offerings for centuries? Why did Jews yearn for millennia to return to this place, and why do we still weep and pour out our hearts to God at the remnants of the western retaining wall of the Temple Mount?
Will Pope Bring Blessings or Curses to the Catholic Church?
In a time of much needed peace and reconciliation, it would be wise for these denominational leaders to study thoroughly what is actually happening in the Middle East. Don’t lead your people astray and “deceive even the elect.” Study the miraculous history of the Jewish people and Israel as told in the Bible...Stand with the Lord and not the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Misplaced Outrage
Meanwhile, the irony is that while Israel is the sole nation in the Middle East where religious minorities are given total freedom...where right now there are IDF units in the Golan Heights giving sorely needed medical assistance to Syrian Muslims who are fighting both against the regime of Bashir Assad and in favor of it...where in every hospital Muslims, Christians and Jews receive the same sophisticated level of medical care; only Israel is considered the anathema of nations.

Personally, with the temporary exit of Kerry and Obama from the “peace talks” game, I think the chances for Israeli-Palestinian peace have just gone exponentially up. The trouble with the American/European approach is that it’s historically blind. Sure, all these players are smart and have read all the “right” books. But that’s the problem. Along with the Tzipi Livnis of this world and the J Street crowd, they’re all too smart by half.
Pope's Visit Coincides with Campaign Against Christian School
Palestinians often avoid any public discussion of tensions between Muslims and Christians due to the sensitive nature of the issue. The Palestinian Authority, for its part, went to great pains to show the Pope and the rest of the world that Muslims and Christians live in harmony and mutual respect...Of course the Palestinian Authority did not tell Pope Francis anything about the smear campaign that was being waged by Muslims against the Rosary Sisters’ School in east Jerusalem.

Pope Francis's Unfriendly Visit
The Golden Age of Catholic-Jewish relations seems to have come to an end during Francis’s visit to the Promised Land this week.
Anti-Israel incitement is ubiquitous in Europe and is appearing in ever-widening circles of the Western world as a whole.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman were right when they blamed the noxious anti-Israel incitement rampant in Europe for Saturday’s murderous shooting attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels and the assault and battery of two Jewish brothers outside their synagogue in a Paris suburb later that day.
Anti-Israel incitement is ubiquitous in Europe and is appearing in ever-widening circles of the Western world as a whole.
Until this week, the Catholic Church stayed out of the campaign to dehumanize Jews and malign the Jewish state.
Pope Benedict XVI was perceived as a friend of Israel, despite his childhood membership in the Hitler Youth. His opposition to Islam’s rejection of reason, eloquently expressed at his speech at the University of Regensburg in 2006, positioned him as a religious champion of reason, individual responsibility and law – Judaism’s primary contributions to humanity.
His predecessor Pope John Paul II was less willing to confront Islamic violence. But his opposition to Communism made him respect Israel as freedom’s outpost in the Middle East. John Paul’s visit to Israel in 2000 was in some ways an historic gesture of friendship to the Jewish people of Israel.
Both Benedict and John Paul II were outspoken champions of the Second Vatican Council and maintained doctrinal allegiance to the Church’s rejection of anti-Judaism, including the charge of deicide, and its denunciation of replacement theology.
Alas, the Golden Age of Catholic-Jewish relations seems to have come to an end during Francis’s visit to the Promised Land this week.
In one of his blander pronouncements during the papal visit, Netanyahu mentioned on Monday that Jesus spoke Hebrew. There was nothing incorrect about Netanyahu’s statement. Jesus was after all, an Israeli Jew.
But Francis couldn’t take the truth. So he indelicately interrupted his host, interjecting, “Aramaic.”
Netanyahu was probably flustered. True, at the time, educated Jews spoke and wrote in Aramaic. And Jesus was educated. But the language of the people was Hebrew. And Jesus preached to the people, in Hebrew.
Netanyahu responded, “He spoke Aramaic, but he knew Hebrew.”
Reuters’ write-up of the incident tried to explain away the pope’s rudeness and historical revisionism, asserting, “Modern-day discourse about Jesus is complicated and often political.” The report went on to delicately mention, “Palestinians sometimes describe Jesus as a Palestinian. Israelis object to that.”Israelis “object to that” because it is a lie.
The Palestinians – and their Islamic and Western supporters – de-Judaize Jesus and proclaim him Palestinian in order to libel the Jews and criminalize the Jewish state. It seems like it would be the job of the Bishop of Rome to set the record straight. But instead, Francis’s discourtesy indicated that at a minimum, he doesn’t think the fact of Jesus’s Judaism should be mentioned in polite company.
Francis’s behavior during his public meeting with Netanyahu could have been brushed off as much ado about nothing if it hadn’t occurred the day after his symbolic embrace of some of the worst anti-Jewish calumnies of our times, and his seeming adoption of replacement theology during his homily in Bethlehem.
Consider first Francis’s behavior at the security barrier.
Reasonable people disagree about the contribution the security fence makes to the security of Israelis. But no one can reasonably doubt that it was built to protect Israelis from Palestinian terrorist murderers. And Francis ought to know this. Francis’s decision to hold a photo-op at the security barrier was an act of extreme hostility against Israel and the Jewish people.
As the former Cardinal of Buenos Aires, Francis may have heard of the November 2002 massacre at Kibbutz Metzer. Metzer was founded by Argentine communists in the 1950s. Metzer is located 500 meters from the 1949 armistice lines which made it an obvious beneficiary of the security fence. But true to its radical roots, in 2002 members of the kibbutz waged a public campaign against the planned route of the security fence. They feared that it would, in the words of Metzer member Danny Dovrat, “ignite hostility and create problems” with the kibbutz’s Palestinian neighbors.

Had he actually cared about the cause of peace and non-violence he claims to champion, Francis might have averred from stopping at the barrier, recognizing that doing so would defile the memory of the Ohayons and of hundreds of other Israeli Jewish families who were destroyed by Palestinian bloodlust and anti-Semitic depravity.
Instead, Francis “spontaneously” got out of his popemobile, walked over to a section of the barrier, and reverentially touched it and kissed it as if it were the Wailing Wall.
The graffiti on the section of the barrier Francis stopped at reinforced his anti-Semitic position. One of the slogans called for the embrace of the BDS campaign.
Although the economic consequences of the campaign of economic warfare against Israel in the West have been negligible, BDS’s goal is not economic. The goal of the movement is to dehumanize Israelis and set apart for social ostracism anyone who refuses to embrace the anti-Jewish slanders that Jews have no right to self-determination and are morally inferior to every other religious, ethnic and national group in the world.
And that is nothing compared to the other slogan on the barrier. That one equated the Palestinians in Bethlehem to the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. In other words, it denied the Holocaust.
By standing there, kissing the barrier with its Holocaust denying slogan, Francis gave Vatican license to Holocaust denial.
And that was just the beginning.
Pope Francis met with Fatah chief Mahmoud Abbas at his presidential palace in Bethlehem. When Israel transferred control over Jesus’s birthplace to Abbas’s predecessor Yasser Arafat in 1996, Arafat seized the Greek Orthodox monastery next to the Church of the Nativity and turned it into his – and later Abbas’s – official residence.
Standing next to Abbas on seized church property, the pope called Abbas “a man of peace.”
Abbas returned the favor by calling for Israel to release all Palestinian terrorists from Israeli prisons. And the pope – who interrupted Netanyahu when he told an historic truth – said nothing.
At mass at the Church of the Nativity on Sunday, Pope Francis prayed with Latin Patriarch Fuoad Twal. In his sermon Twal accused Israelis of being the present-day version of Christ killers by referring to the Palestinians as walking “in the footsteps of the Divine Child,” and likening the Israelis to King Herod.
In his words, “We are not yet done with the present-day Herods, who fear peace more than war… and who are prepared to continue killing.”
Rather than condemn these remarks, Francis echoed them.
“Who are we, as we stand before the Child Jesus? Who are we, standing as we before today’s children?” the pope asked.
“Are we like Mary and Joseph, who welcomed Jesus and cared for him with the love of a father and mother? Or are we like Herod, who wanted to eliminate him?” During his visit Monday to Jerusalem, Francis embraced the Palestinian mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammed Hussein. Departing from his scripted remarks which called for the pope to refer to the mufti and his associates as “dear friends,” Francis called them his “dear brothers.”
Hussein has been condemned by the US and the EU for his calls for the annihilation of Jews in the name of Islam.
In 2012, Hussein said it was the destiny of Muslims to kill Jews, who he claims are subhuman beasts and “the enemies of Allah.” He has also praised suicide bombers and said their souls “tell us to follow in their path.”
Francis didn’t condemn him.
Francis stridently condemned the anti-Jewish attacks in Brussels and Paris. And during his ceremonial visits to Yad Vashem, the Wailing Wall and the terror victims memorial he said similarly appropriate things. But all of his statements ring hollow and false in light of his actions.
Israelis and Jews around the world need to be aware of what is happening. Francis is leading the Catholic Church in a distressingly anti-Jewish direction.

The Golden Age of Catholic-Jewish relations seems to have come to an end during Francis’s visit to the Promised Land this week.
Anti-Israel incitement is ubiquitous in Europe and is appearing in ever-widening circles of the Western world as a whole.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman were right when they blamed the noxious anti-Israel incitement rampant in Europe for Saturday’s murderous shooting attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels and the assault and battery of two Jewish brothers outside their synagogue in a Paris suburb later that day.
Anti-Israel incitement is ubiquitous in Europe and is appearing in ever-widening circles of the Western world as a whole.
Until this week, the Catholic Church stayed out of the campaign to dehumanize Jews and malign the Jewish state.
Pope Benedict XVI was perceived as a friend of Israel, despite his childhood membership in the Hitler Youth. His opposition to Islam’s rejection of reason, eloquently expressed at his speech at the University of Regensburg in 2006, positioned him as a religious champion of reason, individual responsibility and law – Judaism’s primary contributions to humanity.
His predecessor Pope John Paul II was less willing to confront Islamic violence. But his opposition to Communism made him respect Israel as freedom’s outpost in the Middle East. John Paul’s visit to Israel in 2000 was in some ways an historic gesture of friendship to the Jewish people of Israel.
Both Benedict and John Paul II were outspoken champions of the Second Vatican Council and maintained doctrinal allegiance to the Church’s rejection of anti-Judaism, including the charge of deicide, and its denunciation of replacement theology.
Alas, the Golden Age of Catholic-Jewish relations seems to have come to an end during Francis’s visit to the Promised Land this week.
In one of his blander pronouncements during the papal visit, Netanyahu mentioned on Monday that Jesus spoke Hebrew. There was nothing incorrect about Netanyahu’s statement. Jesus was after all, an Israeli Jew.
But Francis couldn’t take the truth. So he indelicately interrupted his host, interjecting, “Aramaic.”
Netanyahu was probably flustered. True, at the time, educated Jews spoke and wrote in Aramaic. And Jesus was educated. But the language of the people was Hebrew. And Jesus preached to the people, in Hebrew.
Netanyahu responded, “He spoke Aramaic, but he knew Hebrew.”
Reuters’ write-up of the incident tried to explain away the pope’s rudeness and historical revisionism, asserting, “Modern-day discourse about Jesus is complicated and often political.” The report went on to delicately mention, “Palestinians sometimes describe Jesus as a Palestinian. Israelis object to that.”Israelis “object to that” because it is a lie.
The Palestinians – and their Islamic and Western supporters – de-Judaize Jesus and proclaim him Palestinian in order to libel the Jews and criminalize the Jewish state. It seems like it would be the job of the Bishop of Rome to set the record straight. But instead, Francis’s discourtesy indicated that at a minimum, he doesn’t think the fact of Jesus’s Judaism should be mentioned in polite company.
Francis’s behavior during his public meeting with Netanyahu could have been brushed off as much ado about nothing if it hadn’t occurred the day after his symbolic embrace of some of the worst anti-Jewish calumnies of our times, and his seeming adoption of replacement theology during his homily in Bethlehem.
Consider first Francis’s behavior at the security barrier.
Reasonable people disagree about the contribution the security fence makes to the security of Israelis. But no one can reasonably doubt that it was built to protect Israelis from Palestinian terrorist murderers. And Francis ought to know this. Francis’s decision to hold a photo-op at the security barrier was an act of extreme hostility against Israel and the Jewish people.
As the former Cardinal of Buenos Aires, Francis may have heard of the November 2002 massacre at Kibbutz Metzer. Metzer was founded by Argentine communists in the 1950s. Metzer is located 500 meters from the 1949 armistice lines which made it an obvious beneficiary of the security fence. But true to its radical roots, in 2002 members of the kibbutz waged a public campaign against the planned route of the security fence. They feared that it would, in the words of Metzer member Danny Dovrat, “ignite hostility and create problems” with the kibbutz’s Palestinian neighbors.

Iranian Hackers Use Facebook to Spy on Israel and the U.S.
Iranian hackers created false social networking accounts and a fake news website to spy on the United States and Israel, among other nations. cyber-intelligence firm ISight Partners said on Thursday.
In what it terms an “unprecedented, three-year cyber espionage campaign,” Reuters reports that Iranian hackers created fake social networking and news sites in order to spy on Western countries, including Israel and the U.S., according to Dallas, Texas-based cyber-intelligence firm ISight Partners.

“ISight Partners, which uncovered the operation, said the hackers’ targets include a four-star US Navy admiral, US lawmakers and ambassadors, members of the US-Israeli lobby, and personnel from Britain, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan,” the report says.
“The firm declined to identify the victims and said it could not say what data had been stolen by the hackers, who were seeking credentials to access government and corporate networks, as well as infect machines with malicious software.”
Dubbed “Newscaster” by ISight, the operation created six personas appearing to work for a fake site called NewsOnAir.org, which used content from respected media sources, the article continues. Another eight personas claimed to be affiliated with defense contractors and organizations.
Beware: Iranian Hackers Find Victims through Friends and Colleagues
The Iranian hackers first established ties with victims’ friends, colleagues and other online connections, the EWN report explains.

“The hackers would initially send the targets content that was not malicious, such as links to news articles on NewsOnAir.org, in a bid to establish trust. Then they would send links that infected PCs with malicious software, or direct targets to web portals that ask for network log-in credentials, iSight said.”
“Facebook Inc. spokesman Jay Nancarrow said his company had discovered the hacking group while investigating suspicious friend requests and other activity on its website,” the report continues.
“LinkedIn spokesman Doug Madey said the site was investigating the report, though none of the 14 fake profiles uncovered by iSight were currently active.”
The operation had been ongoing for at least three years.
“If it’s been going on for so long, clearly they have had success,” iSight Executive Vice President Tiffany Jones told Reuters.
On his recent trip to Japan, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, discussing security and common threats, acknowledged that cyber security “is one area that transcends everything and affects everything.”

When addressing the Iranian nuclear program, Obama downplayed the use of force and emphasized America’s focus on international cooperation. He argued, “The odds of success are still long, and we reserve all options to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. But for the first time in a decade, we have a very real chance of achieving a breakthrough agreement – one that is more effective and durable than what would be achieved through the use of force.”
Hours after Obama’s speech ended, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who recently visited Israel and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stood firmly by Israel’s side. It was addressed to the Prime Minister. As often happens with private letters to politicians, it went unanswered. I decided to open it, and to my surprise it was a letter from a community in India that claimed it was Jewish, was part of the Ten Lost Tribes and wished to return home to Israel. I thought to myself, “if someone is crazy enough to want to join the Jewish people in the state of Israel from India, then why not help them, so I went to meet with the community.”

Israel’s medical marijuana community has grown significantly in the past seven years; whereas once a single doctor administered to 62 patients, now nine doctors serve the needs of over 9,000 patients across the country. This growth has led to an interesting question for religious patients: how will the upcoming sabbatical year affect the production of medical marijuana?
One IDF veteran approached Israel’s Chief Rabbinate with the following question: “I receive grass as a medication. The shmita year will begin in four months, and observant IDF disabled veterans have been asking themselves whether the grass should be grown differently, like fruits and vegetables.” M. is a religious soldier suffering from shell-shock.
According to the Torah, every seven years the land must be left fallow. Farmers are prohibited from planting, plowing or harvesting. Produce that grows on its own naturally is considered ownerless, and anyone is permitted to harvest for themselves what they and their family can use for a few days only.
Since the establishment of the modern state of Israel, many creative solutions have been found to allow society to function in our post-industrial age without transgressing these laws. Now a solution was needed for marijuana, too.
The Rabbinate determined that medical marijuana is completely permissible during the sabbatical, or shmita, year. Since it is used medicinally, and not as food, users should not be concerned.

Minister of Economy Naftali Bennet inaugurated today (May 27) two Riyan Employment Guidance Centers for the Bedouin population in Lakiya and Rahat in southern Israel.
The centers have been in operation since 2013 in accordance with the government decision No. 3708, a program to promote economic growth and development of the Bedouin population, and are two of nine such centers that will serve the Bedouin community in the Negev. The center in Rahat is the largest of 21 centers spread throughout the country, and serves about 60,000 residents of Rahat and its environs, which rates poorly on the socio-economic scale.

Minister of Economy Naftali Bennet inaugurated today (May 27) two Riyan Employment Guidance Centers for the Bedouin population in Lakiya and Rahat in southern Israel.
The centers have been in operation since 2013 in accordance with the government decision No. 3708, a program to promote economic growth and development of the Bedouin population, and are two of nine such centers that will serve the Bedouin community in the Negev. The center in Rahat is the largest of 21 centers spread throughout the country, and serves about 60,000 residents of Rahat and its environs, which rates poorly on the socio-economic scale.

A group of 80 Bnei Menashe, members of the lost tribe of Menashe, made aliyah (moving to Israel) this past week from India. They comprise the first wave out of a total of 250 immigrants that are slated to arrive over the coming month.
The immigrants, who hail from the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, were brought to Israel by the Israel Returns organization, which seeks to help members of Israel’s lost tribes and hidden Jews fulfill their dream and return to their ancestral homeland of Zion.
Israel Returns received permission from the Israeli government last October to bring 900 Bnei Menashe to the Jewish state by 2015 after a policy closing the doors of aliyah to Bnei Menashe was lifted. Earlier this year, Israel Returns facilitated the immigration of 160 Bnei Menashe who immigrated from the Indian state of Mizoram.

Israeli Police, Palestinian Rioters Clash on Temple Mount

As Israel celebrates 47 years since the liberation of Jerusalem from the Jordanians, Israeli police closed down the Temple Mount Wednesday morning after clashes with Palestinian and Arab rioters.
Four Palestinians and an Israeli policeman were reported injured in the clashes as police and Israeli security personnel are on high alert throughout the city of Jerusalem. Following a security assessment, the police shut down access to the Temple Mount, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld confirmed.
Police were forced to enter the compound after masked Palestinian rioters began throwing rocks and live fireworks at visitors entering via the Mughrabi gate. According to Ma’an News Agency, Israeli forces used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse rioters. Israel Radio quoted a Hamas news outlet as reporting that three of the injured were from Turkey.
Wednesday’s clashes are the second day in a row violence has broken out on the Temple Mount. On Tuesday, an Israeli policeman was injured when Palestinians attacked a group of Jews visiting the holy site.
The Muslim Waqf, which is in charge of the Temple Mount compound, accused Israeli nationalists of planning to march through the al-Aqsa compound as part of celebrations. The parade, which travels throughout Jerusalem, will end at the Western Wall.
Access to the Temple Mount has long been a point of contention between Israel and the Waqf. Jews are regularly banned from ascending to Judaism’s most holy site and are forbidden to pray on the site. Attacking Jews physically and verbally who visit the Temple Mount have become regular occurrences.
A controversial new bill in the Knesset regarding Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount is being put to a vote in the Knesset by members of the Likud and Labor party.
The latest round of violence by Palestinians on the Temple Mount comes days after a visit by Pope Francis, who spoke from the Temple Mount about preserving peace and rejecting violence.
The pope advocated for religious equality on the Mount, viewing it as a place for “all communities who look to Abraham.”
“May no one abuse the name of God through violence, may we work together for justice and peace,” Pope Francis implored.
