To refresh your memory, we previously discussed three expressions of spiritual power in the New Testament, namely,

God's power TOWARD us;

God's power IN us; and

God's power THROUGH us.

This is a useful framework for better understanding how spiritual power works, but we still need to know what spiritual power IS (and what it is not).

When You Pray

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites… but when you pray, enter into your closet and pray in secret… and when you pray, do not use vain repetitions… after this manner therefore, pray…” (Matthew 6:5-9ff).

Jesus takes it for granted that His disciples will pray. This is why four times in a row He says, “WHEN you pray” and not “IF you pray.”

But from these brief excerpts of Scripture we learn that there are at least two classes of prayer. One is unacceptable to God, and the other is well-pleasing to Him. One is of hypocrites, the other is of a pure heart. One is done openly to be seen of men, the other is hidden to be seen of God alone. One is nothing more than vain repetition to accomplish my own ends, and the other accomplishes God’s purpose.

Now if we pray the prayer of the hypocrite we are wasting our time. God will not respond, He will not move, He will not listen to such praying. That is not to say that someone (something?) will not answer this self-centered prayer: but the answer, when and if it comes, will not come from the Father in heaven. Much praying is done in vain because the one praying has never gone to the Word to investigate the kind of prayer that is well-pleasing to God. Just as there is a worship that is “spirit-and-truth” and there is a worship which is fleshly and vain, so there is a “spirit-and-truth” sort of praying and a flesh-and-blood praying which is done in vanity

So by the grace of God we would like to look to the Lord to teach us to pray. Let us ask Him to show us the sort of praying that is acceptable to Him...

My concern is that we can have a lot of doctrine and theory and still have no POWER! For example...

We can have teachings on "death to Self" and "putting away sin," but not enough POWER to live a holy life!

We can have motivational speaking on discipleship, but not enough POWER to follow Jesus!

We can have theories on spiritual warfare, but not enough POWER to bring down, cast out, tread upon, and overcome the adversary!

If you, too, are troubled by that ever-widening chasm between what we say we believe and how we actually live, then it is time to look at some basic questions...

What is spiritual power?

Where does it come from?

Who has it?

Who does not?

How can we get it?

How can we get more of it?

How do we flow in it?

Of course (depending on your church background) the answers to these questions will vary between "no such thing as God's power for today" to "I can name and claim anything I want in the name of Jesus!"

Somewhere in the middle of these two extremes we have a very interesting revelation of spiritual power described in the Scriptures, where the "secrets" of spiritual power are revealed to all who ask, seek, and knock.

When I began looking into this for myself, I found some very surprising things that made be re-think all my assumptions... and I want to share with you some of what God has shared with me!

Back to the Cross

Religion seeks to reform a man; the Cross seeks to crucify him. Religion may fail to bring about the desired result, but the Cross never fails to achieve its end.



Mankind will pursue morality, virtue, spirituality, even perform religious works and good deeds, in order to avoid death on a Cross. Abraham "saw" Jesus' day and rejoiced.
Moses prophesied of Another Prophet Who would come.
David wrote detailed prophetic psalms pointing to the crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and reign Christ.
Daniel had visions and dreams of "the Son of Man" and His Kingdom.
All of these spoke of Jesus hundreds of years before "the Word became flesh and dwelled among us."
You and I are the custodians of this legacy.
You and I carry the vision forward.

4 Pillars of a Christ-Centered Faith

The belief and practice of the New Testament was based upon, and centered around, a relationship with a Person.

The focus was not on the systematic theology of a new religious group, nor was it the particular nuance of doctrine from a breakaway splinter group within Judaism. New Testament belief and practice was unique in that it was centered upon a Man Who lived, died, came back to life again, and would now rule in the hearts of men and women until He returned. You could say that in the New Testament universe, God clearly established that everything was to revolve around the SON.



If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? I believe the answer, as it pertains to the Ekklesia, is to go back to the One Foundation that cannot be destroyed: Christ Jesus the Lord. “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 3:11). This Foundation is strong and secure.



We must tear down the flimsy structures we have built and rebuild upon the firm foundation of Christ. I offer the following Four Pillars as a basis upon which the Ekklesia can re-establish itself in the current age and ensure the continuity of an authentic, Biblical, Christ-Centered Faith for this generation and for however many will follow...

Trust In My Life

Hello Elaine,
Last week we discussed "The Spirituality of Perfection."

It is a religious attitude that assumes everyone must be sinless, perfect, and pure before God can possibly use us - our Self TOTALLY dead, our flesh TOTALLY crucified, and whatever is left must be 100% spiritual at all times.

If we manage to live up our own impossible standards then we become judgmental of others who fall short (think: Pharisees; even Jesus wasn't good enough for them).

If we fail to live up to our own impossible standards then we become consumed with unnecessary guilt and shame.

An alternative to this impossible standard is what I call "The Spirituality of Imperfection."

This acknowledges that all of us have sinned and will sin; that none of us are beyond temptation; that none of us have achieved (or can achieve) sinless perfection.

Even Paul made no claims to having achieved perfection, only that he kept pressing on and pursuing Christ.

And so we observed that God’s purpose and will does not depend upon our never making mistakes, but on how we recover from them.

Peter denied the Lord three times, and all the disciples forsook Him!

But it is what they did AFTER they failed that turned the world upside down.

God accounts for these momentary lapses and loves us enough to stay with us even when we mess up.

That is more Scriptural (and realistic) than any impossible notion of "perfection."

Hello Elaine,

As I was driving to the landfill one Saturday morning, beating myself up over my lack of perfection, the Lord spoke to me very clearly that "Chip's righteousness" is like the filthy rags of that landfill.

"Our relationship is not based on your perfection, but Mine," He said. "I love you the same, whether you are good or bad, spiritual or selfish, in My Will or out of it. Your own assessments of yourself are not that accurate anyway."

That was eye-opening.

Being a perfectionist, it was a great blow to my pride to discover that I was far from perfect, that I would make mistakes despite my best intentions, and that I would not achieve "sinless perfection" in this lifetime.

But it was also a relief to discover that this is just the way God intends it.

Spiritual Maturity (not Spiritual Perfection) is God's Purpose for us in this present Age.

Rather than set up the impossible standard of sinlessness, we ought rather to think about how to get ourselves back on track as quickly as possible when the inevitable happens - without any drama or self-loathing.

The first step is realizing that our relationship is based on Unfailing Love rather than Sinless Perfection.

A great example of this is David's moral failure regarding Bathsheba
It is a sad and sorry story of adultery and murder that should have never happened.

But the lesson is in how David responded to being called out for his sins, compared to how Saul responded.

There are lessons there for us as well.

Such as:

"God's ability to forgive is greater than your ability to fail."

The Danger of Familiarity

“You gave me no water for My feet… No kiss of greeting… No oil for My head” (Luke 7:44-46ff).



The presence of Jesus was taken for granted! Was it just a case of forgetfulness on the part of His host, or was it something else? Something deeper?



Perhaps the Pharisee was becoming too familiar with Jesus – just a little bit too casual. From a distance Jesus was pretty amazing. Now that he had Jesus sitting there at his own table, in his own house, he saw that Jesus was a man. Maybe he came to believe that Jesus was someone not too unlike himself. It’s only Jesus, so there’s no need to get all excited. Let Him get His own water and wash His own feet.

That is the danger of familiarity...

Hello Elaine,
Sometimes it seems as if the promises of God aren't coming true.
Sometimes it seems as if the Word of God isn't certain.
Sometimes it seems as though God is slow to respond, or late to arrive.
In all of these situations our faith is tested

And this is what I consider the root of all temptation.
Every temptation, test, trial, and difficulty comes down to a simple decision.
Either we trust in the Greatness and Goodness of God, or we don't.
Either we believe that God is Who He says He is, or we don't.
Either we believe that God will do what He says He will do, or we don't
Faith is not believing God when God delivers, but when God delays.
Anybody can believe God after the answer, but to believe God while waiting for the answer is the true measure of faith.
And what if we don't get the answer we want, when we want it?
Then we can become angry, bitter, frustrated, sad, or upset.
Or, we can take the attitude of Job: "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him."
God wasn't the one out to get Job, but Job had no way of knowing that.
Even so, Job says I'm going to trust God no matter what; and nothing, not even death, will cause me keep me from trusting in Him.
You have so much more revelation, wisdom, and discernment than Job.
You, too, can trust God.
Even when the enemy (not God) comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
His power is perfected in our weakness.
His promises are "yes" and "amen" in Christ.
To David, a man after God's own heart, God is about to make the most daring promise of all.
And, even though it looked like the promise could not possibly be fulfilled, God did above and beyond what David asked or imagined.
