Victory

"The triumphant Christian does not fight for victory;
he celebrates a victory already won. The victorious
life is Christ's business, not yours" (Reginald
Wallis).

It is no coincidence that Nike, the world-famous
manufacturer of sports goods, chose that name to sell
its products. Nike, in Greek mythology, is the goddess
of victory, daughter of the Titan Pallas and the river
Styx. Nike fought with the god Zeus in his battle
against the Titans, and in Greek art is sometimes
represented as winged and carrying a wreath or palm of
victory. The Nike of Samothráki, or Winged Victory
(Louvre, Paris), is one of the finest pieces of
Hellenistic sculpture. What better name to give to
sports goods, signifying challenge and the pursuit of
victory.

We, too, can experience victory through faith in
Christ. Our victories over oppressors may not be like
those of the Old Testament saints, but more likely our
victories will be specific to the role God wants us to
play. Even though our body will deteriorate and die, we
will live forever because of Christ. In the promised
resurrection, even death will be defeated, and Christ's
victory will be made complete.

With Christ's help we can experience significant
victory over sin. "The person who has been born into
God's family does not make a practice of sinning
because now God's life is in him; so he can't keep on
sinning, for this new life has been born into him and
controls him--he has been born again" (1 John 3:9,
TLB).
